As I did with
every AFC team, we will take a look at all teams playoff aspirations for the NFC.
Here are the current NFC standings:
1. New York Giants (11-1)
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3)
3. Minnesota Vikings (7-5)
4. Arizona Cardinals (7-5)
5. Carolina Panthers (9-3)
6. Atlanta Falcons (8-4)
NFC East:
New York Giants (11-1): The Super Bowl champs are clearly (and unfortunately as a Cowboys fan) the team to beat in the NFC/NFL even without Plax. The Giants schedule is tough (PHI, at DAL, CAR, at MIN), but I can't see the Bucs/Panthers making up a 2-game deficit.
Dallas Cowboys (8-4): Entering the season, the Cowboys were the consensus pick in the NFC to reach the Super Bowl. Now with a month to go and perhaps the league's most challenging schedule (at PIT, NYG, BAL, at PHI), they would be on the outside looking in as the 7th team even though they share the same record with the Falcons.
Washington Redskins (7-5): The Redskins have stumbled lately losing 4 of their last 5. With the NFC South likely to have (at least) 1 team make playoffs, the 'Skins are fighting an uphill battle. If the 'Skins can beat the Ravens this week, they finish with a relatively easy final 3 games (at CIN, PHI, at SF).
Philadelphia Eagles (6-5-1): After bouncing back against the Cardinals on Thanksgiving, the Eagles need to bounce back against division rivals. They are 0-3 vs NFC East on season, but get 3 more shots in remaining 4 weeks.
NFC North:
Minnesota Vikings (7-5): After crushing the Bears at the Metrodome, the Vikings have a 1-game lead over the Bears and a 2-game lead over the Packers. The Vikings, who have the league's 2nd-best rushing defense, suffered a huge blow when
the NFL suspended Kevin and Pat Williams. But now a
judge has blocked the suspensions for now. And their schedule gets tough after playing the Lions this weekend.
Chicago Bears (6-6): For the Bears to make the post-season, they will most likely need to win the division as they are 2 games out of the wildcard. They play 3 of their final 4 games at home (JAX, NO, GB, at HOU).
Green Bay Packers (5-7): The Packers and Bears would have been the benefactors of a suspension to the Vikings Kevin and Pat Williams. They will need lots of help, but they get to play the Bears head-to-head and they won their 1st matchup. They host Houston this weekend and then face the Jags and Bears on the road to finish up what could be a historic matchup against the Lions at home.
Detroit Lions (0-12): Eliminated.
NFC South:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3): The Bucs grip on the #2 seed and a first-round bye is razor thin. The Bucs are tied with the Panthers and play each other in Carolina on MNF. The home team is 22-2 this season in the NFC South. In the final 3 weeks, they go on the road to Atlanta and then host the Chargers and Raiders.
Carolina Panthers (9-3): If the trend persists, the Panthers will beat the Bucs Sunday. The home team in the NFC South is 22-2 and the Panthers are 6-0. But the Panthers have a tougher remaining schedule than the Bucs. They host the Broncos in week 15 and then play the Giants and Saints on the road.
Atlanta Falcons (8-4): Considering issues with Mike Vick, Bobby Petrino and the Falcons in 2007, their season has impressed me more than any other team's. As it stands, they hold the tie-breaker over the Cowboys for the 6th seed. Their remaining schedule (at NO, TB, at MIN, STL) is easier than the Cowboys.
New Orleans Saints (6-6): 2 games out of wildcard and 3 games out of a division lead nearly impossible to overcome. However, they play both the Falcons and Panthers at home. They also play the Bears and Lions on the road.
NFC West:
Arizona Cardinals (7-5): The Cardinals have beaten the 49ers in both of their matchups. If the Cardinals, who are 14-point favorites, beat the Rams this weekend, they will win the division. Or if the 49ers, who are 4-point underdogs, lose to the Jets this weekend, the Cards will win the division. Then they will battle it out with the NFC North winner for the #3 seed.
San Francisco 49ers (4-8): see Arizona Cardinals. Considering the likelihood of a Cardinals victory or a 49ers loss this weekend, the 49ers season (from a playoff perspective) likely ends this weekend.
Seattle Seahawks (2-10): Eliminated.
St. Louis Rams (2-10): Eliminated.
