Mike Furrey says Culpepper will be named Lions starter
Former Detroit Lions WR Mike Furrey, who was one of six Lions to be cut on February 9th, says that the team's starting QB in 2009 will be Daunte Culpepper.
The Lions have the #1 overall draft pick and many expect them to use it to draft QB Matthew Stafford out of Georgia. However, Stafford is leaving Georgia after his junior season and has to show that he can take a little something off his fastball and be accurate with his throws.
"I've spoken to a couple of my friends who are backups there and I know [the Lions] are going to name Daunte Culpepper as the starter," Furrey said during a Sunday morning appearance on Sirius NFL Radio.Furrey also says that the team has asked Dan Orlovsky to be the back-up QB. However, Furrey says Orlovsky, who is scheduled to become a free agent on February 27th, will likely end up somewhere else.
"Danny is looking and ready to go someplace else," Furrey said. "He's done well enough to deserve a chance to start or at least compete for a starting spot somewhere. I know they've asked him to come back and be the backup."Currently, the other QBs on the roster are Jon Kitna, Drew Stanton and Drew Henson.
