Niners ask honeymooning Smith to take pay cut
The San Francisco 49ers have asked that QB Alex Smith, who was the #1 overall pick in 2005, to take a pay cut. The team is in contact with Smith's agent Tom Condon while Smith is on his honeymoon.
He is currently scheduled to earn $9.625 million this season and count $12.3 million against the salary cap.
In essence, the options for Smith are that he (a) take a pay cut and remain with the 49ers or (b) don't take a pay cut, and get cut.
Smith has a career QB rating of 63.5 in 32 games (he missed all of last year). He has thrown 19 career TDs and 31 career INTs.

"For us to ask him to restructure, that's kind of a shot," general manager Scot McCloughan said of Smith. "He is under contract for two more years and for us to ask him to take a paycut ... it's kind of a blow to the ego."Shawn Hill, who started 10 games in 2008, is the team's starter, but coach Mike Singletary and McCloughan have said there will be an open competition at QB.
