Chargers' Jeromey Clary receives most performance-based pay
The top earner in the NFL's performance-based pay system in 2008 was Jeromey Clary, who received $405,859 in additional compensation.
The performance-based pay system, which was negotiated into the collective bargaining agreement, determines additional compensation based on comparison of salary and playing time. In total, $105 million was awarded to NFL players in additional performance-based pay.
Clary, the Chargers' sixth-round pick in 2006, started all 16 games in 2008 for the Chargers.
After Clary, the next four highest recipients of performance-based pay were Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein ($348,134), Washington Redskins safety Chris Horton ($342,197), New Orleans Saints guard Carl Nicks ($335,033) and Cleveland Browns cornerback Brandon McDonald ($329,803).
In 2009, the performance-based pay is expected to increase by 5% to $3.5 million per team. In 2007, the league paid out $99 million and Willie Colon was the highest earner with $309,534 received.
