Giants, Browns talked about Edwards

Trade rumors had circulated involving the Giants DE Mathias Kiawanuka and the Browns WR Braylon Edwards.

Per the Newark Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo, Scout.com's The Giant Insider has reported that the Browns and Giants had a series of offers and counter-offers involving Edwards. However, Kiawanuka wasn't involved in the trade discussions.

The report says that the Giants originally offered their 2009 draft picks acquired from the Saints (second- and fifth-rounders) when they traded Jeremy Shockey last year. After the Browns said no, they countered with Giants' WR Steve Smith. The Giants said no and countered with either Mario Manningham or Domenik Hixon, which the Browns turned down.

Per the report, trade talks have slowed, but Garafolo points out that they could heat up again depending on what happens with Plaxico Burress. If Burress faces jail time and/or league suspensions, the talks could intensify as the Giants enter the Plan B phase.

Edwards, the Browns first-round pick in 2005, is in the final year of his contract. Last year, Edwards had a huge drop-off in production from 2007 including leading the league with 16-22 dropped passes.

In 2008, Edwards had 55 receptions for 873 yards and three touchdowns. The prior year, he broke out with 80 catches for 1289 yards and 16 TDs.
