Singletary having hill built next to Niners practice fields

San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary is "old school." So, it's only appropriate that the Hall of Fame linebacker has ordered 2,500 tons of dirt to make a hill adjacent to the team's practice facility.

When asked what he calls his creation, Singletary gave the same one-word response that Clubber Lang gave when he was asked for his prediction in Rocky III. In other words, "pain."

As Singletary points out, many players like Singletary himself, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice ran hills and that running hills "builds something that's kind of a mystery" that you can't get "in the weight room" or "on the track."

The hill isn't ready to be run yet, but Singletary ran his team through a grueling two-day workout and conditioning program Friday and Saturday. Although Singletary was considering ending Friday's workout early, the team wouldn't have it.
"Vernon was the first one to say, 'No, we're going to finish this,' and everybody else chimed in,'' Singletary said. "I think that says a lot about our team."
Many questioned his methods after Singletary's first game as coach when he publicly chewed out Vernon Davis and mooned his team at halftime of the same game. However, the team is buying in (or just really scared).

I've predicted year after year that the athletically-freakish Vernon Davis will break out. And year after year I've been wrong. Well, at the risk of sounding foolish (in other words, business as usual here at The Daily Blitz), I'm predicting a breakout year for Vernon Davis in 2009. And this time, I really mean it.
