Lions release Travis Fisher

Per Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions have released cornerback Travis Fisher, who was "kind of surprised."

In the off-season, the Lions have added three new cornerbacks - Phillip Buchanon, Anthony Henry and Eric King.
They just told me that they were just releasing me to free some money up, but it’s not like they were paying me $4 million anyway,” said Fisher, who signed a three-year, $9-million deal with the Lions last year. “I think it’s kind of a bogus excuse, but it’s just a situation where I guess they wanted to go another way.”
Fisher, who signed a three-year, $9-million deal last year, had 37 tackles and no interceptions in 14 games last year.

Seahawks, Hill agree to six-year deal

After drafting Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, the Seattle Seahawks removed the franchise tag from linebacker Leroy Hill, which made him an unrestricted free agent.

However, the Seahawks said it was their intention to sign Hill to a long-term deal.

Per John Clayton of ESPN, the Seahawks and Hill agreed to a six-year deal worth $38 million ($15.5 million guaranteed).

The contract has an addendum that protects Hill's guaranteed money if he's suspended for an incident where he fell asleep behind the wheel and police found two bags of marijuana in his car.

Hill, who was the Seahawks' third-round pick in 2005, had 84 tackles and one sack in 12 games in 2008.

Jimmy Graham to play TE for Miami (FL)

Q: What do Duke guard Greg Paulus and Miami (FL) forward Jimmy Graham share in common?

A: Both players have used up their four years of college basketball eligibility and will play college football for one year.

However, unlike Paulus, Graham knows where he will play football (University of Miami) in 2009. Paulus is exploring all of his options, but expected to play for Syracuse, which is his home town.
''Randy Shannon sat me down, we had a little conversation, and I made a decision to come back to college,'' he said before UM's basketball banquet at BankUnited Center. "I'm really excited. Now I can't foul out. Now I can be as aggressive as I want to be. I'm excited to be hit for the first time. I know I'm giving up money I had on the table to be a pro basketball player [overseas].''
Graham, who is 6'8" and weighs 255 pounds, played one year of high school football. Could he be the next Antonio Gates?

Paterno wants another team for the Big Ten

The Big Ten Conference has eleven teams.

Joe Paterno wants to make it the Big 12, both literally and figuratively.
"Everybody else is playing playoffs on television," Paterno said. "You never see a Big Ten team mentioned. So I think that's a handicap.

"I've tried to talk to the Big Ten people about, 'Let's get a 12th team -- Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt -- we could have a little bit of a playoff.'"
At best, the Big Ten is the third (or possibly fourth) best conference in college football behind the SEC, Big 12 (and possibly Pac 10).

While adding a team like Syracuse won't make the conference much better, having a playoff/championship would be a step in the right direction.

Does Peppers to Niners make sense?

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the answer to that question is yes.

While Barrows doesn't know if the Niners are seriously considering such a move, he believes it would make sense.

Defensive end Julius Peppers, who was franchised by the Carolina Panthers, hasn't signed his franchise tender yet. When/if he does, he will earn a guaranteed salary of $16.683 million in 2009.

Peppers says he won't sign a long-term deal with Carolina since he would like to play in 3-4 scheme. The Panthers utilize a 4-3 scheme whereas the 49ers use a 3-4 scheme.

The Panthers and 49ers have already completed a trade within the past week. The 49ers sent their second- and fourth-round picks to Carolina in exchange for the Panthers' first-round pick next year. That trade leaves the Niners with two first-round picks in 2010 and the Panthers with none.

Carolina used that second-round pick to select Florida State's Everette Brown, a pass rusher that could eventually be Peppers' replacement in Carolina.

Per Barrows, the 49ers, who have the salary-cap space to sign Peppers to a long-term deal, could trade one of their two first-rounders and perhaps some other picks or players.

Peppers, who won't report to the Panthers' mini-camp, had 14 sacks in 2008, but he is 29 years old and wants out of Carolina. The 49ers finished tied for 16th in the league with 30 sacks as a team in 2008. Adding Peppers would significantly bolster their pass rush.

As Barrows says, the deal would make a lot of sense.

Patriots get TE Alex Smith for 2010 draft pick

The New England Patriots have acquired TE Alex Smith from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick next year.

The Buccaneers acquired Kellen Winslow Jr. from the Cleveland Browns and, in turn, made him the highest-paid tight end in the game. Jerramy Stevens is Winslow's backup.

Smith, who was the Buccaneers third-round pick in 2005, had 21 receptions for 250 yards and three touchdowns in 2008. He only had two receptions for 22 yards after week nine.

Smoot about to treat Barnes like a rookie?

In the fifth round of this year's NFL draft, the Washington Redskins drafted cornerback Kevin Barnes.

Who?

Or, at least, that's what fellow Redskins' cornerback Fred Smoot said in response to Barnes' comments.

Per David Elfin of the Washington Times, Barnes said that 30-year-old Smoot is "getting a little bit older."
"They come in like that until they go to three days of [minicamp] and [then] they humble," Smoot said. "It don't bother me. I'm going to take him through some things. I haven't seen the guy. I don't even know his name and I love football so that tells you [something]. I know who's going to get drafted where. I didn't know the kid."
The Redskins' three-day mini-camp opens tomorrow.

Drew Bennett works out for Falcons

Free agent wide receiver Drew Bennett worked out for the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Bennett worked out with the Atlanta Falcons per Steve Wyche of NFL.com.

The Falcons traded receiver Laurent Robinson to the St. Louis Rams this off-season. Bennett would help provide some depth to their receiving corps behind starters Roddy White and Michael Jenkins.

Bennett, who missed all of 2008 on injured reserve, had 33 receptions for 375 yards for the St. Louis Rams in 2007. In his career, Bennett has 307 receptions for 4412 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Shayne Graham signs franchise tender

Cincinnati Bengals kicker Shayne Graham has signed his franchise tender and will receive a guaranteed 2009 salary of $2.483 million, which is the average of the league's five highest-paid kickers.
We’re happy Shayne is signed in advance of our offseason camps,” head coach Marvin Lewis said, “and this does not preclude our continuing to talk to Shayne and his representatives about reaching a longer-term agreement.”
Teams and franchise players can negotiate longer-term contracts until July 15th. Otherwise, they'll have to wait until after the 2009 season.

Graham ranks fourth all-time in the NFL for field goal accuracy (85.6 percent).

Patrick Kerney has elbow surgery

Seattle Seahawks DE Patrick Kerney had surgery on his left elbow yesterday to remove bone chips according to Eric Williams of the Tacoma News-Tribune.

Having torn his left labrum for a second time in less than a year, Kerney missed the final nine games of the 2008 season after having season-ending shoulder surgery.

Although he won't participate in any off-season minicamps, Kerney is expected to be ready for training camp in July.

Kerney had five sacks in the seven games he played last year.

"The Tank" to get goal-line carries for Pittsburgh?

The Pittsburgh Steelers had Jerome "The Bus" Bettis. Now, they have Frank "The Tank" Summers.

Summers, who is 5'9" and weighs 242 pounds, was drafted in the fifth round of this year's draft and should receive his fair share of goal-line carries.
"I love scoring touchdowns and, when it's crunch time in a game and they're looking at a short-yardage situation, that's what I pride myself on. That's the best feeling in the world.

"I don't think I could fit any better than on any other team in the league. With Pittsburgh's physical play and my physical style, we go hand in hand."
Last year, Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore both had five rushing touchdowns. Rookie Rashard Mendenhall spent the majority of the year on IR.

Lions cut Michael Gaines

The Detroit Lions have parted ways with TE Michael Gaines.

Gaines, who signed a four-year contract worth $10 million last year, caught 23 passes for 260 yards and one touchdown in 2008.

The Lions drafted Brandon Pettigrew with the 20th overall pick and also selected Dan Gronkowski, who missed being "Mr. Irrelevant" by one pick. The Lions have two other tight ends (Casey Fitzsimmons and Will Heller) on the roster.

DeMarcus Ware: $94 million-dollar man?

The Dallas Cowboys continue to negotiate a long-term deal with DeMarcus Ware that will possibly make him the highest-paid linebacker in NFL history.

Ware says he's not "frustrated" about not having a new deal in place yet.

When a deal is reached, he expects it to fall in between the deal signed by James Harrison ($51.1 million) and Albert Haynesworth ($100 million).
“Harrison texted me right before he signed,” Ware said. “He (will be 31) years old and at the top part of his career right now. That was great that he signed. I’m almost six-years younger than he is. I have longer longevity.”

I feel like (this deal) is somewhere in between,” Ware said. “It’s not $51 (million) and it’s not $100 (million). Maybe it’s $94 (million).”
He's half-joking about the amount ($94 million), but he will certainly cash in. In his four seasons, Ware has improved his sack total each season (8.0 to 11.5 to 14.0 to 20.0).

Jaguars release OT Spencer and FB Cottrone

The Jacksonville Jaguars, who drafted offensive tackles with their first two picks in the NFL draft Saturday, released tackle Charles Spencer.

Virginia's Eugene Monroe was selected with the eighth overall pick and Arizona's Eben Britton was selected with the 39th overall pick. In addition to Monroe and Britton, the Jaguars added Tra Thomas via free agency this off-season.

The Jags signed Spencer last September after Richard Collier was shot.

In addition to Spencer, the Jaguars released FB Anthony Cottrone.

Indiana kicks Kellen Lewis off team

The Indiana Hoosiers have kicked wide receiver Kellen Lewis off the team for violating (unspecified) team rules.
"We are disappointed to have to make this decision," [Coach Bill] Lynch said in a prepared statement. "When you have expectations of those on your team that are not met, you need to do what is ultimately in the overall best interest of your program."

"Today's action underscores that no individual student-athlete, regardless of talent or popularity, is above the expectations of Indiana University," [Athletic Director Fred] Glass said in a statement.
Lewis, who made the switch from QB to WR this spring, holds the Indiana record in touchdown passes (48). Lewis was second-team All-Big Ten in 2007.

Larry Foote has asked to be released

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Larry Foote has asked to be released from the Steelers, who unsuccessfully attempted to trade him over draft weekend. He has one year left on his contract and is due a salary of $2,885,000 for 2009.

Foote, who is from Detroit, has said that he'd like to play for his hometown team if he were released.
"It's nothing personal," said Foote, who turns 29 on June 12. "James Farrior never slows down, and Timmons came in and I can't grow here any more. They turned me into a two-down linebacker last year. I was stuck in a role.

"I love the team, I love winning, but you can't keep being unhappy. It got to the point where they were not giving me a chance."
Although Foote started all 19 games (16 regular-season games and three post-season games) last year, he felt it was only a matter of time before Lawrence Timmons replaced him in the starting lineup as he did in the nickel package.

Foote had 86 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2008 while Timmons had 71 tackles and five sacks.

Colts re-sign Freddie Keiaho

Per Len Pasquerelli of the ESPN.com, the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed linebacker Freddie Keiaho. Although terms of the deal haven't been released, Keiaho's contract is believed to be a one-year deal.

Keiaho, who was drafted by the Colts in the third round in 2006, has started the past two seasons. He recorded over 100 tackles in both seasons.

The Colts plan to move Clint Session to weak-side linebacker, where Keiaho played. If Keiaho doesn't start, he will provide depth and flexibility.

Saints cut Hollis Thomas

The New Orleans Saints have released veteran defensive tackle Hollis Thomas per the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Earlier this week, the Saints released another defensive tackle (Brian Young).

Thomas, who was due a salary of $1.4 million this year, has seen his production decline in his three years in New Orleans and has battled weight and conditioning issues.
"Hollis Thomas had a significant presence for us both on the defensive line and in the locker room for a number of years," Saints Coach Sean Payton said in a statement. "He has been a big part of what we have accomplished here."
In 30 starts with the Saints, Thomas had 123 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

LSU's Les Miles to "tweet" on game days

Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles was upset with Charlie Villanueva tweeting (posting using the social-networking site Twitter.com) during halftime of Bucks' games.

LSU head football coach Les Miles has a different perspective than Skiles. Miles himself will tweet before, at halftime and after games on Saturdays this fall.
"Absolutely, it's for recruiting purposes," Miles says. "It allows us to communicate, to those people that subscribe, blasts of information. … It's also an opportunity for those prospects that subscribe to communicate to us."
The NCAA allows tweeting by coaches as long as they are not using it for direct communication with recruits.

Navy to appear in 2013 Armed Forces Bowl

A lot can change between now and 2013.

The Navy football team, which has no league affiliation and has earned six consecutive bowl appearances, has agreed to appear in the 2013 Armed Forces Bowl.

In the upcoming season, the Armed Forces Bowl (past results) will feature a matchup between teams from Conference USA and the Mountain West.

Also, Navy will appear in this year's Texas Bowl (past results) in Houston.

What if the team is awful in 2013? If Navy goes 2-10 in 2013, are they stuck with Navy?

Hard Knocks Cincinnati

HBO is following up the Dallas Cowboys Hard Knocks (training camp reality series) with a Cincinnati Bengals' version in 2009.

NFL training camps begin in late-July so the episodes should be begin appearing shortly after that.

With a Bengals' roster full of knuckleheads and malcontents, we get a glimpse into the real-life drama that head coach Marvin Lewis has to deal with on a daily basis.

If Chad Ocho Cinco wants out bad enough, who knows what he can/will do?

There's only one way for HBO to be able to top the 2009 series. Hard Knocks Oakland Raiders in 2010?

Drew Bennett visits Browns

Per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, free agent receiver Drew Bennett was scheduled for a workout with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday.

Bennett signed a free-agent deal with St. Louis in 2007. Before spending the 2008 season on injury reserve, he caught 33 passes in 2007 for 375 yards and three touchdowns.

His best season was with the Tennessee Titans in 2004. That year, he had 80 receptions for 1247 yards and 11 touchdowns. During the 2004 season, Bennett caught eight touchdowns in a three-game span.

If the Browns don't sign Bennett, there is some speculation that he could land in Tennessee.

Although the Titans drafted Kenny Britt in the first round and the Browns drafted Brian Robiskie in the second round, both teams could use help at wide receiver.

Greg Paulus to meet with Nebraska next?

Former Duke point guard Greg Paulus, who was the Gatorade (Football) Player of the Year in high school, had worked out with the Green Bay Packers and visited with the Michigan Wolverines several weeks ago.

More recently, it was speculated that he would use his one season of eligibility to join the Syracuse Orangemen.

However, Paulus is leaving no stone unturned.

Per Joe Schad of ESPN, Paulus, who is still expected to play football for Syracuse, doesn't want to have any regrets about not reviewing all of his options.

So, the next stop on the Greg Paulus tour is Lincoln to visit with the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Thursday.

AFL team offers contract to Michael Vick as "joke"

Reports were that the Albany Firebirds had offered imprisoned QB Michael Vick an arenafootball2 one-year contract for the league standard provided NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Vick. The league-standard contract pays $200 per game as well as a $50 bonus per win.

However, Firebirds team owner Walter Robb says it was a "joke" that he didn't know about.
"That's a joke," Robb said Tuesday evening. "Can you imagine him playing for $200 a week? I think (the offer) was a big mistake. I just found out about it 10 minutes ago."

"I certainly would not have approved it if I had known it was even being joked about," Robb said. "I'm a dog lover and I don't want anything to do with (Vick)."
Of course, Vick would never have played for $200 per game. Whether Robb "just found out about it" or not, it was a free way to generate buzz and publicity around a team that otherwise would receive very little of it.

Redskins' pick lies about why he was suspended

Washington Redskins fifth-round draft pick Cody Glenn came clean. Or, at least, half clean.

Nebraska suspended Glenn for three games last season. He told teams that he was suspended for selling tickets, but he has admitted he was suspended for something else.
"It's me being dumb, just trying to have people leave me alone," Glenn told the AP when asked today about why he gave the Washington media the story about the tickets. "It's something I said that I probably shouldn't have, looking at it now."
What is that something else? He didn't say, but that's likely to be the first question the Redskins (or other teams, if he gets released) will ask. The second question will be "why did you lie?"

An NFL source tells Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, "good luck whenever he gets waived."

Darren Sproles signed his franchise tender

Tuesday San Diego Chargers RB/KR Darren Sproles signed his franchise tender, which will pay him a guaranteed 2009 salary of $6.62 million.
"Darren wanted to go into the season knowing everything is cool," said his agent, Gary Wichard. "He wanted to be at minicamp. He's a Charger."
Sproles had 330 rushing yards and 342 receiving yards in 2008. He had seven touchdowns (one rushing, five receiving and one return).

Brett Favre officially released from Jets

Let the speculation begin as the Jets officially released QB Brett Favre from the reserve-retired list on Tuesday.

Before the Green Bay Packers traded future Hall-of-Fame quarterback to the New York Jets, Favre wanted to play for the Minnesota Vikings. You know, the team that was (and still is) a QB away from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Favre and his agent "Bus" Cook say that he didn't request to be released because he's considering making a comeback. In fact, he said the opposite.
"Nothing has changed," Favre said in a statement. "At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."
Considering his February 11th retirement from the Jets wasn't his first retirement, plenty won't believe Favre.

Favre, who ranks first all-time in passing yards (65127) and touchdowns (464), ranks first all-time in interceptions (310) and he led the NFL in interceptions (22) last season.

Sheldon Brown to show for mandatory camp Friday

Disgruntled Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown says that he'll attend the team's mandatory post-draft camp that begins on Friday. However, he still hopes that the Eagles will trade him.
"You never know," Brown said. "If somebody offers something they like, they might listen."

"I didn't become a villain all of a sudden," he said. "I'm a professional, and I've been in contact with Troy [Vincent]."
The Eagles have two voluntary sessions in June and it's not known whether Brown will show for either of those.

Brown is under contract until 2012 and the Eagles have stated that they have no intention of re-working his deal.

Ron Zook using Twitter to recruit

Illinois head football coach Ron Zook is one of the latest coaches to use Twitter.

According to Stu Durando of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, at least 18 D-I coaches have Twitter accounts including USC's Pete Carroll, Notre Dame's Charlie Weis and Georgia's Mark Richt.
"The whole reason obviously had to do with recruiting, period," he said. "I guess others have been able to follow us. It's amazing what (students) have now and how they communicate, and guys are able to see what we're doing.''

"It's more about our recruiting rules than the technology,'' NCAA spokeswoman Jennifer Kearns said. "As long as coaches aren't contacting student-athletes directly through Twitter or means other than e-mail or faxing, then it's permissible. ... If you're just posting something for the general public it doesn't violate recruiting rules.''
Currently, Rivals.com ranks Illinois' 2009 incoming class as the 35th best recruiting class in the country and the fifth best in the Big Ten.

Donte Whitner pleads not guilty

Facing charges of aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner pleaded not guilty today.

On April 11th, Whitner was arrested outside a Cleveland bar, in which he was celebrating the birthday of former Ohio State Buckeye teammate Ted Ginn Jr.

It's unclear why he tried to make his way towards a "near riot."

NFL draft in prime time in 2010?

The NFL draft could go to a new format in 2010.

This year, the NFL draft began at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday with the first round. The first and second rounds were drafted on Saturday.

In the past, the first day of the draft included the first three rounds and started at noon. Last year was the first year where the first day included only the first two rounds.

In 2010, the NFL might switch to a format where the first round would be in prime time on Thursday night. Friday night would be rounds two and three. Then the final four rounds would be drafted on Saturday.
"We're more confident now, with the timing of the first round, that it can fit a 3½-hour window," [NFL Commissioner Roger] Goodell said. "We think it can be very appealing from a fan's standpoint and an audience standpoint.

"We'll talk to our teams about it. We have to see what impact this would have on them. But I think it has potential."
What's better than two days of the NFL draft? Three days.

Does Lance Briggs shave under the influence?

Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs, who has been attending the Bears' off-season workouts, did not show up Monday.

Was he hiding something? Apparently so.

Briggs was photographed at an event this weekend where he was signing autographs, but his right arm was heavily bandaged.

Per the Chicago Sun-Times, Briggs cut his hand on a straight-edge razor.

Briggs was scheduled to report to the Bears' facility today to explain what happened and allow the team to examine his hand.

I'm certainly not a finely-tuned, multi-million-dollar professional athlete. But I've managed to make it through my 38 29 years sans shaving accidents. There has to be more to the story (and it's probably pretty interesting).

Steelers met with Ashley Lelie

The Pittsburgh Steelers met with wide receiver Ashley Lelie yesterday according to John Harris of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
"He had a great visit. The Steelers and I are going to continue to have open dialogue," [Lelie's agent Peter] Schaffer said. "I think there's some mutual interest, and we're going to keep discussing it."

"It was a very productive day for Ashley," Schaffer said. "The Steelers, I think, came away with the same opinion, and we're going to keep an open line of communication."
With Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes as starters, rookie receiver Mike Wallace, who the Steelers drafted in the third round, and last year's second-round pick Limas Sweed are expected to compete for the third receiver spot.

Nate Washington occupied that role in 2008, but he has signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent.

In the past two seasons, Lelie's production has dropped off a cliff. He has 21 receptions for 312 yards in 28 games.

Cardinals also release LaBoy and Hood

Not only did the Arizona Cardinals release Edgerrin James today, but they also released DE Travis LaBoy and CB Rod Hood.

LaBoy was due to receive a $2 million salary and Hood was due to receive a $3 million salary in 2009.

Hood started 14 games last season and LaBoy started 12 games. Hood had 40 tackles and one interception. LaBoy had 31 tackles and four sacks.

Cardinals release Edgerrin James

Per FoxSports.com, the Arizona Cardinals have released running back Edgerrin James today.

The move comes as no surprise. James has stated various times that he wanted out of Arizona and, on Saturday, the Cardinals drafted Ohio State RB Chris "Beanie" Wells when he fell to them at the 31st overall pick.

James, who is 11th all-time in rushing yards (12,121), was due a salary of $5 million in 2009.

In the middle of last season, James was benched in favor of rookie Tim Hightower. However, James led the team in rushing last season with 514 yards.

Dolphins cut QB John Beck

The Miami Dolphins have released QB John Beck according to the Miami Herald.

Beck was drafted by the one-and-done Cam Cameron administration in the second round of the 2007 draft class.

Before the NFL draft, it was expected that the 'Fins would let Beck go. When the Dolphins drafted West Virginia QB Pat White in the second round on Saturday and said he would compete at the QB position - and not at WR, the writing was on the wall.

The 2009 starter is Chad Pennington and White and Chad Henne, last year's second-round pick, will compete for the starting gig in 2010.

Beck is all class. It deserves to be mentioned that after being let go, he called to thank many Dolphins' employees per the Miami Herald.
''I've never had a player do that before,'' one employee said.
Only one-third of the 2007 draftees remain of the roster: WR Ted Ginn Jr., NT Paul Soliai and P Brandon Fields.

Chase Daniel signs with Redskins

Undrafted Missouri QB Chase Daniel has signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins.
"Chris Meidt was the guy that worked me out at the combine, and he really liked me," Daniel said of the Redskins assistant coach. "I talked to [head] coach [Jim] Zorn a couple of times. I'm excited about the opportunity they presented."

"They have three quarterbacks, and any three can make the team," Daniel said, according to The Star. "I'm excited about what's going to happen."
The other Redskins' starting QB is (I guess until the next rumor - Cutler first, Sanchez second, who's next?) Jason Campbell. Todd Collins and Colt Brennan are backups.

In 2008, Daniel threw for 4335 yards (fourth in NCAA), 39 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. In his career, Daniel threw for 12515 yards, 101 touchdowns and 41 interceptions.

One more foot out the door for LJ?

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted running back Javarris Williams in the seventh round yesterday. Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star points out that drafting a power back similar to Larry Johnson may mean that LJ is one step closer to being released.

Williams, who played for Tennessee State, finished as the school's second all-time leading rusher (4,329 yards).

The Chiefs have already won a grievance against Johnson saying the Chiefs won't have to pay Johnson $3.75 million in guaranteed money in 2009 and 2010 if they release him. If they don't release him, he will earn $4.55 million in 2009.

In the past two seasons, LJ has played only 20 games due to injuries and suspensions.

Bengals cut Kenny Perry, Levi Jones likely to be next

Per Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Cincinnati Bengals have released RB Kenny Perry, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2004 out of Michigan.

The Bengals currently have running backs Cedric Benson and Kenny Watson on the roster from last year. And they drafted Bernard Scott out of Abilene Christian yesterday in the sixth round.

In his five seasons with the team since being drafted, Perry has played in only 35 games and missed all of the 2007 season.

Last year, Perry rushed for 269 yards on 104 carries (2.6 yards per carry). He scored two touchdowns and lost three of his five fumbles.

In addition to cutting Perry, the next victim is likely to be tackle Levi Jones.
“Prior to the owner’s meeting the team said he was going to be traded before or during the draft and if nothing happened there they would release him,” [Jones' agent Kenneth] Zuckerman said. “It wasn’t us asking this. Levi isn’t asking for this. This is all brought up by them.”
Jones, who started at left tackle for the past seven seasons, will be replaced by the Bengals' first-round pick (Andre Smith from Alabama).

Broncos giving up on former first-rounder?

Per Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com, the Denver Broncos were willing to trade their 2007 first-round pick Jarvis Moss.

The 6'6" defensive end that was taken with the 17th overall draft pick in 2007 was being shopped for a seventh-rounder yesterday.

Before being drafted, Moss was expected to help the team's pass rush. In 18 games over two seasons, however, he has only 3.5 sacks.

Did Jets give up too much for Shonn Greene?

Per Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News, the New York Jets gave up too much (their third-, fourth- and seventh-round picks) to move up 11 spots and make the first pick of the second day of the NFL draft.

The Jets used that pick to draft Iowa RB Shonn Greene, who won the Doak Walker award.

Cimini points out the negatives in Greene - not blazing fast (4.6 40 time), not a great receiver and not a physical runner despite frame (5-10 1/2, 227 pounds). He also writes that Thomas Jones, who led the AFC in rushing yet is unhappy with his contract, is not "sitting home, fretting" about the drafting of Greene.

Worst-case scenario, however, Greene provides the Jets with insurance if the Jones' situation gets ugly. That being said, I agree with Cimini that Jones will report for mandatory mini-camp (June).

And I agree with him that Jones will be a cap casualty next off-season before he's due a $3 million bonus if Greene turns out to be as good as the Jets believe he'll be.

Greg Ellis' job security takes a hit

Dallas Cowboys LB Greg Ellis will turn 34 years old this summer and is in the final year of his contract. Today the Cowboys drafted two pass-rushers, who could be lower-cost replacements for Ellis, who will count $6.25 million towards the salary cap.

In the fourth round, the Cowboys selected Oregon State's Victor Butler (110th overall) and Texas Tech's Brandon Williams (120th overall).

Per Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News, cutting Ellis would save the Cowboys $4.15 million against the salary cap. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says Ellis is on the roster "right now."
"...I know he had that same concern when Spencer came in. He had that same concern when he moved over (from defensive end to outside linebacker). And that's rightfully so. I think the world of Greg, but anything we do there one way or the other, I don't want him to read about it. I want to sit down and talk to him about it."
It sounds like Greg Ellis' days in Dallas are numbered. Gag order coming?

Dolphins won't trade Brown, White to play to QB?

Heading into the NFL draft, there was some speculation that Miami Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown was on the trading block.

In his best Josh McDaniels impression, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland tells the Miami Herald that he thinks the rumor started because he has replied to inquiries saying that ''everyone'' is available for the "right price."
"Before the draft, you have a lot of people calling. Somehow, those things take on a life of their own. ... We're not looking to trade Ronnie Brown,'' Ireland said. "You can write that.''
While they won't trade Brown, they'll likely use their second-round pick (West Virginia's Pat White) as his replacement for the Wildcat. When the Dolphins introduced the Wildcat formation in week three against the Patriots, Brown scored five touchdowns (four rushing and one passing).

Chad Pennington is the starter in 2009, but the Dolphins had previously stated that they want Chad Henne to start by 2010. With the drafting of White, Ireland says that White will battle Henne as the QB of the future.
"They're going to be competing for the position,'' Ireland said.
White is the third QB drafted in the second round in the past three years by the Dolphins. However, it's easy to identify which one is not like the other (out of White, Henne and John Beck).

Beck was drafted by previous regime led by Cam Cameron.

Although anyone can be traded for the right price, it may be that Beck will be traded for any price.

Tom Cable comments on Darrius Heyward-Bey

With their choice of any receiver in the draft including Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree, the Oakland Raiders selected Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey with the seventh overall pick.

Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee posted some Q&A with Raiders coach Tom Cable on the topic of the speedy receiver.

Cable says that the difference between the 41 touchdowns posted by Crabtree and the 13 posted by Heyward-Bey were due to systems. Crabtree played in a spread offense whereas Heyward-Bey played in a pro-style offense.

Cable says that if Heyward-Bey played in a spread offense, "he might have been over 50 touchdowns."
"He's the only guy that came out of a true pro-style system. Everyone else was in a spread system. So, his learning curve is much, much shorter than those other guys. Then you got that size, that speed and his ability to go get it. The thing that jumps out at you, this is the one guy at the combine who, at the 30-yard mark, actually changed gears. And there was a whole other warp speed, if you will."
Cable or Raiders owner Al Davis or even Heyward-Bey himself can spin it any way they want. However, this is a huge reach and he will be forever be linked to Michael Crabtree, who was drafted by the other team in the Bay area.

Patriots trade Ellis Hobbs to Eagles

The New England Patriots have traded cornerback Ellis Hobbs to the Philadelphia Eagles for two fifth-round picks. In turn, the Patriots have traded away those picks (the 137th and 141st picks overall).

In free agency, the Patriots signed cornerbacks Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden, who played for the Redskins and Lions, respectively, last season.

In the second round, the Patriots drafted UConn cornerback Darius Butler.

The Eagles have been dealing (or, technically, not dealing) with disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown, who has requested to be traded. The Eagles say they won't trade Brown, who is under contract until 2012.

Brown and Asante Samuel are the starting corners and Joselio Hanson is the nickelback. Hobbs provides the Eagles with some flexibility.

Hobbs is in the final year of his rookie contract and started all 16 games for the Patriots last season.

Seahawks remove franchise tag from Leroy Hill

The Seattle Seahawks will remove the franchise tag from linebacker Leroy Hill. Hill now becomes an unrestricted free agent.

By removing the franchise tag, the team has more flexibility under the cap. If Hill, who didn't report to the team's April mini-camp, had signed the franchise tender offer, he would have been guaranteed a salary of $8.3 million in 2008.

Per Eric Williams of The News Tribune, the Seahawks and Hill will continue to negotiate. The Seahawks reportedly offered Hill a six-year contract worth $36 million, which Hill turned down.

The Seahawks drafted Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry with the fourth overall pick yesterday.

April 25, 2009

Steelers, Ward agree to extension

Per John Clayton of ESPN, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Hines Ward have agreed to a four-year extension worth $22 million.

Instead of becoming a free agent after this season, Ward is now under contract until 2013 and will finish his career in Pittsburgh.

Ward, who's arguably the best blocking WR in the NFL, ranks 22nd all-time in receptions (800) and 34th all-time in receiving yards (9780).

He was MVP of Super Bowl XL.

Broncos trade up to 37 overall

The Denver Broncos have traded with Seattle for the Seahawks' second-round pick (37 overall).

The Broncos selected cornerback Alphonso Smith from Wake Forest.

The Seahawks will get a first-round pick from Denver in 2010.

And with the 32nd-overall pick...

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected Evander "Ziggy" Hood, DT from Missouri.

Some players still on the board after round one include Florida State's Everette Brown, USC's Rey Maualuga, Western Michigan's Louis Delmas, Arizona's Eben Britton, Ohio State's James Lauranaitis, Wake Forest's Alphonso Smith and Connecticut's Darius Butler.

Detroit is on the clock to start the second round. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 31st-overall pick...

The Arizona Cardinals have selected Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB from Ohio State.

Despite some durability concerns, Wells is a steal for the Cardinals at 31st. This likely means the end of Edgerrin James' era in Arizona.

Pittsburgh is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 30th-overall pick...

The Tennessee Titans have selected Kenny Britt, WR from Rutgers.

Britt is a big, physical receiver who runs good routes.

He is the fifth receiver off the board. The first four were Darrius Heyward-Bey (Oakland 7th), Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 10th), Jeremy Maclin (Philadelphia 19th) and Hakeem Nicks (New York Giants 29th).

Arizona is on the clock. Chris "Beanie" Wells from Ohio State would make a lot of sense. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 29th-overall pick...

The New York Giants have selected Hakeem Nicks, WR from North Carolina.

The Giants were looking for a big receiver to replace Plaxico Burress, who was released this off-season. Nicks is a big, physical receiver.

Tennessee is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 28th-overall pick...

The Buffalo Bills have selected Eric Wood, center from Louisville.

Wood is the second-rated center in the draft according to Scout.com.

The New York Giants are on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 27th-overall pick...

The Indianapolis Colts have selected Donald Brown, RB from Connecticut.

Brown led the NCAA in rushing in 2008 and he had a good combine workout (41.5" vertical jump).

Some players still on the board are USC's Rey Maualuga, Florida State's Everette Brown and Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells.

Buffalo is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

Nick Collins to (continue to) skip workouts

Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins hasn't been attending the Packers' off-season workouts, which began March 16th.

Per Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazzette, Collins still hasn't shown up for the workouts. His wife had a baby a couple of weeks ago, but Collins doesn't plan on reporting any time soon.

Collins is in the final year of his contract and he will earn $3.045 million this year. He is unhappy with the lack of discussions about a contract extension.

The Packers have a mandatory mini-camp from June 23-25. It's unclear whether or not the Pro Bowl safety will show for the mini-camp.

And with the 26th-overall pick...

The Green Bay Packers, who traded up with New England to pick at 26, have selected USC LB Clay Matthews.

Matthews is a good fit for the 3-4 scheme as an outside linebacker.

Indianapolis is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 25th-overall pick...

The Miami Dolphins have selected Vontae Davis, CB from Illinois.

Davis, who is the brother of San Francisco's Vernon Davis, has all the physical tools, but some question his character.

New England is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 24th-overall pick...

The Atlanta Falcons have selected Peria Jerry, DT from Mississippi.

Jerry is ranked as the second-best defensive tackle by Scout.com in the draft behind Boston College's B.J. Raji, who was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the ninth overall pick.

Miami is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 23rd-overall pick...

The Baltimore Ravens, who acquired in the 23rd overall pick from New England, have selected Michael Oher, OT from Mississippi.

Oher has an amazing story and the Ravens are getting a steal here at 23.

Atlanta is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 22nd-overall pick...

The Minnesota Vikings have selected Percy Harvin, WR from Florida.

Harvin is one of the most electrifying players in this year's draft, however, he is full of character concerns. Considering the Vikings wiped 78 players off their board due to character issues, I'm surprised the Vikes selected Harvin.

New England is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 21st-overall pick...

The Cleveland Browns have selected Alex Mack, center from California.

Mack was the 2008 winner of the Draddy Trophy, which is given to the player with best combination of academics, community service and on-field performance.

Minnesota is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 20th-overall pick...

The Detroit Lions have selected Brandon Pettigrew, TE from Oklahoma State.

I expected the Lions to draft an offensive tackle, such as Mississippi's Michael Oher. However, Pettigrew is the best tight end in the draft and a great blocker.

The Lions have the 33rd overall pick and there are some good tackles still on the board (Oher, Connecticut's William Beatty, Arizona's Eben Britton, etc.). My guess is they are thinking they could get one of those guys in the second round with the 33rd overall pick.

Cleveland is on the clock (unless they trade down for a fourth time today). See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 19th-overall pick...

The Philadelphia Eagles have selected WR Jeremy Maclin, WR from Missouri.

The Cleveland Browns have traded their first-round pick for a third time. The traded out of five to the Jets and out of 17th to the Bucs.

I'm surprised the Eagles didn't go after a bigger target at receiver or package their first-round pick in a bid for Anquan Boldin. However, I think Maclin is a good value from the perspective that he was selected 19th overall.

Detroit is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 18th-overall pick...

The Denver Broncos select Robert Ayers, DE from Tennessee.

I expected the Broncos to take two defensive players in the first round. Ayers was the fifth-ranked DE according to Scout.com.

Cleveland is on the clock (again). See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 17th-overall pick...

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have selected Josh Freeman, QB from Kansas State.

The Bucs now have three QBs named Josh on their roster - Freeman, McNown and Johnson. Freeman is raw (compared to the other first-round QBs selected), but he has big-time tools.

Denver is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

Cleveland traded down 2 spots

Cleveland traded the 17th overall pick, which they acquired from the Jets in a trade earlier, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had the 19th overall pick. The Browns also receive a sixth-round pick.

Are the Bucs going to draft Kansas State QB Josh Freeman?

Bucs coach Raheem Morris spent 2006 at Kansas State as defensive coordinator.

And with the 16th-overall pick...

The San Diego Chargers have selected Larry English, OLB from Northern Illinois.

Scouts.com ranks English as the fourth-best OLB in this year's draft behind Aaron Curry, who was taken fourth overall, Brian Cushing, who was taken 15th overall, and Clay Matthews, who's still on the board.

Cleveland is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 15th-overall pick...

The Houston Texans have selected Brian Cushing, LB from USC.

Cushing, who fills a big need for the Texans, is the first USC linebacker taken. Will Rey Maualuga be next to San Diego?

Houston is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 14th-overall pick...

The New Orleans Saints have selected Malcolm Jenkins, DB from Ohio State.

Jenkins would have certainly gone in the top ten if he posted a faster 40 time at the NFL combine. However, he has great size and ball skills.

Houston is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 13th-overall pick...

The Washington Redskins have selected Brian Orakpo, DE from Texas.

The Redskins got a bargain at 13 to go along with their huge free-agent acquisition, Albert Haynesworth. Orakpo fills the need created by Jason Taylor's release.

New Orleans is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 12th-overall pick...

The Denver Broncos have selected Knowshon Moreno, RB from Georgia.

I'm surprised the Broncos went offense, but Moreno is a versatile back. His question marks are durability and top-end speed.

Washington is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the 11th-overall pick...

The Buffalo Bills selected Aaron Maybin, DE from Penn State.

Maybin, who's small but explosive as a DE, didn't even enter last season as a starter for Penn State. But he wreaked a lot of havoc and the Bills need pass-rush help.

Denver is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the tenth-overall pick...

The San Francisco 49ers have selected Michael Crabtree, WR from Texas Tech.

Crabtree won the Fred Biletnikoff award the past two seasons, his only two in college, where he amassed monster numbers. In 2 seasons, Crabtree combined for 231 receptions, 3127 receiving yards and 41 TDs.

Buffalo is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the ninth-overall pick...

The Green Bay Packers have selected B.J. Raji, NT from Boston College.

Raji is huge nose tackle that can eat up space, which is necessary for a 3-4 defense. (The Packers are transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4.) The other three teams in the NFC North all had 1000-yard rushers (Adrian Peterson in Minnesota, Matt Forte in Chicago and Kevin Smith in Detroit) in 2008.

San Francisco is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the eighth-overall pick...

The Jacksonville Jaguars have selected Eugene Monroe, OT from Virginia.

Monroe is a polished tackle, who can play right away. However, he doesn't have as much upside as Baylor's Jason Smith, who was selected by St. Louis, and Alabama's Andre Smith, who was selected by Cincinnati.

Green Bay is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the seventh-overall pick...

The Oakland Raiders have selected Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR from Maryland.

Raiders' owner Al Davis loves speed. So, he selected the fastest WR in this year's draft. Heyward-Bey posted a 4.3 40 at the combine.

This is a very questionable pick bypassing Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree or even Missouri's Jeremy Macklin since he covets speed so much.

Jacksonville is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the sixth-overall pick...

The Cincinnati Bengals have selected Andre Smith, OT from Alabama.

Smith had some character issues (suspended for Bowl game, didn't work out - and disappeared - at the NFL combine, out of shape for his pro day workout, etc.), but he was as good as any tackle on tape.

He won the Outland Trophy last year given to the nation's best lineman.

Oakland is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

Terms of Jets-Browns trade

The terms of the Jets-Browns trade was just announced.

The Jets get the Browns' first-round pick (fifth overall), which they used to draft USC QB Mark Sanchez.

In return, the Browns get the Jets' first-round pick (17th overall), second-round pick (52nd overall) as well as DE Kenyon Coleman, QB Brett Ratliff and DB Abram Elam.

And with the fifth-overall pick...

The New York Jets, who traded with the Cleveland Browns, have selected Mark Sanchez, QB from USC.

With the exception of Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff, New Yorkers are ecstatic.

If only Sanchez accepted the invitation to be in New York for the draft with the other prospects...

Cincinnati is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

Trade between Browns and Jets

Reports are the New York Jets have traded with the Cleveland Browns, who are now on the clock.

The trade will (almost definitely) be for USC QB Mark Sanchez, who is being shown on TV on the phone.

Is he regretting not attending in New York now?

And with the fourth-overall pick...

The Seattle Seahawks select Aaron Curry, LB from Wake Forest.

The Mark-Sanchez-to-Seattle speculation was merely a smokescreen. I think Curry is the best player in the draft so I think the Seahawks get a bargain at number four overall.

Let the bidding war for USC QB Mark Sanchez begin.

Cleveland is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the third-overall pick...

The Kansas City Chiefs have selected Tyson Jackson, DE from LSU.

Jackson, who was slotted at 12 in my mock draft to Denver, is a player that moved up quickly in the past day or so.

The Chiefs may have reached, but he feels a need. Jackson is someone that has been compared to Richard Seymour, who was Chiefs GM Scott Pioli's first pick with the New England Patriots.

Seattle is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

And with the second-overall pick...

The St. Louis Rams have selected Jason Smith, OT from Baylor.

Smith has more upside than Virginia tackle Eugene Monroe and less character concerns than Alabama's Andre Smith.

The Rams released Orlando Pace in the off-season so tackle is a big need and Spagnuolo believes that teams are built from the inside out so Smith is not much of a surprise.

However, there were rumors that the New York Jets were looking to move up the second overall pick by trading their first-round picks this and next year. If the Jets and Rams worked out a trade, they presumably would have selected USC QB Mark Sanchez.

Kansas City is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

Steelers sign Keiwan Ratliff

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed cornerback Keiwan Ratliff to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The Steelers lost CB Bryant McFadden to the Arizona Cardinals via free agency and Ratliff becomes the first unrestricted free agent the Steelers have signed from another team this off-season.

With the loss of McFadden, the Steelers were expected to address the cornerback position early in the draft. By signing Ratliff, however, the Steelers have more flexibility.

Ratliff, who was drafted by the Bengals in second round in 2004, had 32 tackles and two interceptions in 13 games for the Colts last year.

Get Pats picks (early) via Twitter

The New England Patriots have indicated that they may "tweet" some of their draft picks via Twitter before they are announced at the NFL draft.
"We might even get a few draft picks out via Twitter before they are announced on TV, so any Patriots fans following the draft closely are encouraged to begin following RealPatriots on Twitter," Patriots Vice President of Media Relations Stacey James said in a statement.
In addition to the Patriots, the San Diego Chargers will be announcing their picks in real time via Twitter as well.

The NFL doesn't currently have a policy prohibiting it, but the league may develop one after the draft.
"After the draft, we will review how the teams are announcing their picks and determine whether we need to develop a policy," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Friday.
The Patriots have 11 picks in the 2009 NFL draft including four picks in the first (23 overall) and second (34, 47 and 58 overall) rounds.

Lions, Stafford agree to contract

The Detroit Lions did what they said they would do.

They have reached a deal with the player they will select with today's top overall draft pick. The Lions and Georgia QB Matthew Stafford have agreed to a six-year contract worth as much as $78 million with $41.7 million guaranteed.
"Obviously being the No. 1 pick would be a great honor and going to Detroit would be a lot of fun," Stafford said. "I'm excited about it."
The Lions' lack of success recently is no laughing matter (at least, to Lions' fans), especially after setting the record for most losses in a season with their imperfect season last year.

Per Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press, Lions coach Jim Schwartz and Stafford are two of a kind when it comes to sense of humor.
"He is a witty guy, and I feel like I kind of am myself, too," Stafford said. "I try to shoot it back at him as much as I possibly can and have some fun with it. Especially playing quarterback in this league, you've got to be able to react and make decisions quick. That's the last thing on my mind when I'm shooting something back at him, but it probably comes off in a positive light."
While Stafford faces a ton of pressure (comparisons to Bobby Layne (who went to the same high school as Stafford), last year's 0-16 season and the fans who preferred Aaron Curry or Jason Smith) in Detroit, he feels ready to handle it.

Plus, the last Lions' QB to make the Pro Bowl was Greg Landry in 1971. The three QBs the Lions have selected in the first round since Landry (Joey Harrington, Andre Ware and Chuck Long) have all been busts.
"And to the people who doubt me, I try to prove it on the field. That's the No. 1 thing, is try to win football games. That's what it's all about at quarterback. You can have all the stats you want, but it comes down to wins and losses."
The St. Louis Rams are on the clock...

Will Jets "take a player at 17"?

As trade talks surrounding the New York Jets builds and the NFL draft approaches (33 hours away), Brian Costello of the New York Post expects it to be difficult for Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum to do what he says he's going to do.
"Right now, we're really comfortable with where we are at 17," Tannenbaum said last week. "If opportunities came along that we thought made sense for the organization, we'll take a long look at it, but right now we fully anticipate taking a player at 17."
In the past, Tannenbaum has orchestrated draft-day moves that landed the Jets Darrelle Revis, Dustin Keller, etc.

The Jets have the 17th overall pick and six total draft picks.

If USC QB Mark Sanchez isn't selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the fourth pick or the Cleveland Browns with the fifth pick as some project, a bidding war between the Jets, Broncos and Redskins could ensue to trade up and draft Sanchez.

The Jets have said (publicly) they are comfortable with their QBs and Kellen Clemens appears to be in the lead in the QB battle. But the Jets' biggest weakness is their lack of experience at QB.

The Redskins aggressively pursued Jay Cutler, who was traded to the Bears, but Jim Zorn has said the 'Skins are committed to Jason Campbell and the team reportedly cleared the air with Campbell after the attempt to acquire Cutler. That being said, they are believed to be very interested in Sanchez.

Too bad Sanchez won't be in New York for the drama.

Giants targeting Heyward-Bey?

It's much easier to find teams willing to trade down than there are teams who desire to move up in the NFL draft this year.

One of the teams that may be looking to move up is the New York Giants.

Per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News, Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, who posted a 4.3 40 time at the NFL scouting combine, is the Giants' target.

Based on the NFL draft-pick value chart, the Giants, who have the 29th overall pick and 10 total picks in the draft, could move up to 14th if they offer their first-rounder in addition to the picks they were offering the Cleveland Browns for Braylon Edwards. Reports were they offered the Browns the second- and fifth-round picks they had acquired from the Saints for Jeremy Shockey.

The talks between the Browns and Giants regarding Braylon Edwards are reportedly "dead" although Paul Schwartz of the New York Post argues that trade talks were never as serious as reported.

Not only is Heyward-Bey fast, he is a big target (6'2" and 210 pounds) the Giants covet after releasing Plaxico Burress. As a junior, Heyward-Bey had 45 receptions for 694 yards and five TDs last year.

Ex-Steeler John Banaszak hospitalized

Per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, John Banaszak, who played DE for the Pittsburgh Steelers and is currently an assistant coach at Robert Morris, was hospitalized after becoming ill while working out.
"It was touch-and-go earlier, but we're hoping for the best," [Robert Morris sports information director Jim] Duzyk said. "Nothing has been ruled out. Knowing coach Banaszak, he'll keep fighting it."
Reports that Banaszak suffered aneurysms weren't confirmed, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Banaszak played for the Steelers from 1975 to 1981. He started in two of the three Super Bowls (XIII & XIV) he won as a Steeler.

Titans talk to Cards about Boldin

With the receivers currently on their roster, the Tennessee Titans would likely start Justin Gage and Nate Washington, who was signed in the off-season, at WR.

However, per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, the Titans have talked to the Arizona Cardinals about wide receiver Anquan Boldin. That being said, no offer is imminent and, if the Cardinals are seeking a first- and third-round pick as speculated, time is running out for the Titans (and other teams).
"It's safe to say we're always trying to get the team better, so we'll continue to monitor various situations,'' Reinfeldt said, declining to discuss Boldin specifically. "But there's a numbers of players that are discussed at this point and time. That's kind of the way it works.''

"I would hope you would not operate in a desperation mode or a panic mode, that you had to have this one player,'' Reinfeldt said. "Consistency is the key and I guess we would always operate that way. I think in the long run that is the safest way to do it, the best way to do it.''
The Titans have the 30th pick in the first round and will likely select a CB or WR in the first round. Some of the receivers that should/could be available when the Titans pick include Florida's Percy Harvin, whose physical ability is equally matched by his character concerns, UNC's Hakeem Nicks, Rutgers' Kenny Britt and Ohio State's Brian Robiskie.

Miles Austin signs tender

Dallas Cowboys receiver (and restricted free agent) Miles Austin signed his one-year tender that will guarantee him a 2009 salary of $1.545 million.

Austin also was being courted by the New York Jets, with whom he had a visited earlier in the month. If the Jets had made an offer to Austin, the Cowboys would have had the ability to match the offer. Otherwise, the Jets would have had to send their second-round pick (52 overall) to the Cowboys as compensation.

The team was negotiating a long-term deal with Austin, but they didn't agree on the value of the deal.
"On your second contract, you get paid off what you've done, not what you might do," Stephen Jones said.
Austin, who has big-play potential, had 13 receptions for 278 yards and three touchdowns.

H.S. AD to present Randall McDaniel at HoF induction

Randall McDaniel will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August and he recently flew out to Arizona to ask his mentor to present him for his induction.

His mentor is O.K. Fulton, who was his "high school athletic director."
"He had some tears, my wife had some tears, and I might have had a tear, too," McDaniel said of Fulton's reaction and acceptance.

"He knows more about me than I do," McDaniel said. "He believed in me because of the person, not because I was an athlete. He always believed in education first. He has been an educator for 50 years. He would tell you that playing sports is fine, but that it's only for a short period of your life, so you should get your education."
McDaniel listened to Fulton. And now McDaniel, a 12-time Pro Bowler, is an elementary school teacher stressing the importance of education to children in kindergarten through fourth grade.

Browns to pass on Michael Crabtree?

Apparently the feelings between the Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree and the Cleveland Browns aren't mutual after all.
"I loved Cleveland and would love to play there," Crabtree said in an e-mail. "It's a team with great history and great fans who love football."
Per Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns were turned off the the me-first attitude of Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree. Perhaps enough to take Crabtree off their draft board.

In an interview with USA Today, Crabtree said (essentially) "I'm all that and a bag of chips."
"I am a complete football player. If anybody wonders about me, I'm a complete football player. I can say it twice. You can't do no better," says Crabtree.
In 2 seasons, Crabtree has 231 receptions, 3127 receiving yards and 41 TDs and he has won the Fred Biletnikoff award, which is given to the nation's top receiver, both years.

The Browns have scheduled last-minute workouts with Hakeem Nicks of North Carolina, Kenny Britt of Rutgers and Mohamed Massaquoi of Georgia.

Ike Taylor restructures contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers have restructured cornerback Ike Taylor's contract for a second year in a row. Taylor's agent Joel Segal told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that it was a "minor restructure."
"We were very, very tight, and we actually couldn't add Charlie [Batch] without deleting somebody ," [Steelers' director of football operations Kevin] Colbert said. "With the uncertainty of the (collective bargaining agreement), it's harder to manipulate not only new contracts but some of the stuff you used to do to create (salary cap) room as far as guaranteeing and turning it into a signing bonus."
The Steelers released RB Gary Russell to make room to sign Charlie Batch.

Taylor, who has two years remaining on his contract, had 65 tackles and one interception in 2008.

Colts rework Wayne's deal, sign Barnes

The Indianapolis Colts have freed up some cap space by restructuring the deal for wide receiver Reggie Wayne.

The Colts reduced the amount Wayne will count towards the cap from $7.44 million to $6.96 million by turning a portion of his base salary into a bonus that will be prorated over the final three years of his contract.

In addition to restructuring Wayne's contract, the Colts signed guard Brandon Barnes to a two-year contract.

The Colts are roughly $7 million under the salary cap.

Panthers give Delhomme an extension

The Carolina Panthers have given QB Jake Delhomme a five-year contract extension worth $42.5 million ($20 million of which is guaranteed). Delhomme, who is 34 years old, is now under contract until 2014.

The deal saves the Panthers money this year. Delhomme would have counted $10 million towards the salary cap in what was the last year of his deal before the extension.

After Delhomme's six-turnover performance (five interceptions and one lost fumble) in the Panthers' only playoff game last season, there was speculation about that game being his last in a Panthers' uniform.
"We all know last year was a good year that ended terribly," Delhomme said. "Nobody was more disappointed than I was for not putting my team in a position to win. That's something I've always tried to pride myself on. ... Why it happened I don't know. But it did and certainly things weren't good for a while."
Counting playoff and regular-season games over the past six years, the Panthers are 54-33 when Delhomme starts and 6-10 when he doesn't.

In 2008, Delhomme passed for 3288 yards, 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Tony Gonzalez traded to Falcons

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded TE Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta for the Falcons' second-round pick in 2010.

Last year, the leading receiver at the TE position for the Falcons was Justin Peelle, who had 15 receptions for 159 yards on the season.

With the acquisition of Gonzo, the Falcons will shift their focus completely to the defensive side of the ball when the pick in the first round.
The tight end position was in consideration,” [Falcons GM Thomas] Dimitroff said. “It’s very important for us to continue to focus on the defensive side of the ball.”
The Falcons have last year's Offensive Rookie of the Year in Matt Ryan at QB, the NFL second-leading rusher (1699 yards) in 2008 in Michael Turner at RB and the NFL's fourth-leading receiver (1382 yards) in 2008 in Roddy White at WR.

Now, they have one of the NFL's all-time greatest tight ends.

Gonzalez is the all-time leader for tight ends in receptions (916), receiving yards (10940) and receiving touchdowns (76). In 2008, he had 96 receptions for 1058 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Lions have deal for Curry in place, Stafford next?

The Detroit Lions have stated that it's their desire and intention to have a contract in place with whomever they select number one overall before Saturday's NFL draft begins at 4 p.m.

The three players believed to be in the mix to be their pick are Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, Baylor OT Jason Smith and Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry. Per Tom Kowalski of MLive.com, a deal is in place with Curry although it is believed that Stafford will be the pick.

Fellow QB prospect, USC's Mark Sanchez, who several (not me) believe will go fourth overall to Seattle, says the Lions are "really in love with" Stafford and that "Stafford has locked that one down."

There have been intense negotiations over the past two days between Stafford and the Lions. However, the Lions have denied reports that surfaced suggesting that a deal in place between the big-armed QB and the Lions.

A factor that makes the negotiations more interesting is that agent Tom Condon represents both Stafford and Smith.

It is believed the Lions' offer to Stafford is their best offer. So, if Condon and Stafford don't agree to the Lions offer before the draft, the Lions will go with Curry.

Percy Harvin flunks drug test

University of Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin had already seen his draft stock drop due to questions about his character.

On a survey of high-level NFL team executives released a few weeks ago by Pro Football Weekly, Harvin topped the list of potential first-round picks with character issues. In other words, he ranked as the riskiest of all in that group.

Per FoxSports.com, Harvin flunked his drug test he had taken at the NFL scouting combine in February. Both Harvin and North Carolina receiver Brandon Tate have tested positive for marijuana.

Harvin was projected as a first-round pick while Tate was projected as a first- or second-round pick.

With the combine being the most important "job interview" of their lives, Harvin and Tate are idiots for putting themselves in a position to fail a drug test that they know is going to be administered. They deserve to have their draft stocks plummet.

Ryan Del Rosal impressing scouts

Is that AAA? Or a tackle?

Ryan Del Rosal, an offensive tackle from Dixie State in Utah, is getting noticed by NFL scouts.

Del Rosal is 6'5" and 311 pounds and he has impressed with his athletic ability. He benched 225 pounds 35 times and ran a sub-5.0 40.

One of his training methods? Pulling a "5,000-pound Chevy Tahoe down the street with a harness attached to his back."

Interestingly enough, his father is in the "towing business." But my guess is he tows vehicles with the help of a truck -- not a harness strapped to his back.

Deacon Jones upset his number's not retired

One of three defensive ends named to the NFL 75th Anniversary Team, Deacon Jones thinks it's "asinine" that his number hasn't been retired by the Rams.
"I came as close to perfection," the former "Secretary of Defense" says, "as you can possibly get."

Of his signature move, Jones says, "The headslap was not my invention, but Rembrandt, of course, did not invent painting."
Jones was named to eight Pro Bowls, won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1967 and 1968 and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.

Considering the Rams have retired the numbers of five other players, I agree 100% with Deacon. Perhaps, he should use his signature "headslap" to knock some sense into the Rams' front office.

Bengals (again) not trading Ocho Cinco

Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis says that disgruntled wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco won't get traded.

After the Bengals stood pat last off-season and turned down an deal for two first-round picks, there is no reason to not believe Lewis.
"I don't know why people continue with the speculation of moving Chad," Lewis said. "Many times we've reiterated, I don't know if we're keeping count on this, Chad's not getting moved. ... I don't know if any team that goes through a draft doesn't draft a wideout. I'm sure there will be at least 32 receivers picked in this draft by 32 teams. Chances are we probably take a wideout at some point in the draft."

"You're going to carry a glut of those guys and if we can get a guy that could help us and give us some upside, I think that would be helpful," Lewis said. "It would not (impact The Ocho). I don't think we're going to pick a guy that's going to be better than Chad. I haven't seen that guy yet."
The Bengals currently have Laveranues Coles, Chris Henry, Andre Caldwell, Jerome Simpson and Chad Ocho Cinco on the roster at wideout.

Ocho Cinco, who injured his shoulder last pre-season and was unhappy all season, had his worst year since his rookie campaign. He finished the season with 53 receptions and 540 yards.

Buckeye fined $350 for DUI

Back on July 26th, Ohio State defensive tackle Doug Worthington was pulled over for speeding and DUI. He pleaded guilty to the charge in January.

Yesterday Worthington was handed down a fine of $350 for the DUI and had his 180-day jail term suspended except for three days for a three-day alcohol-intervention class, which he has already completed.

Last year, Worthington had 34 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks.

Greg Paulus to visit Syracuse

Duke basketball point guard Greg Paulus, former Gatorade Player of the Year in football, has already worked out for the Green Bay Packers and received an offer to compete for the starting QB spot at the University of Michigan.

After visiting with the Packers and Wolverines, the next stop on the Greg Paulus tour is Syracuse.

Paulus is from Syracuse where he was a four-year all-state selection as quarterback at Christian Brothers Academy. He finished his high-school career with 11,763 passing yards and 152 touchdowns.

Syracuse has a new head coach in Doug Marrone, who was the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints for the past three seasons. The Saints led the NFL in offense (410.7 yards per game) in 2008.

Colts re-sign Matt Giordano

The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed safety Matt Giordano.

After being drafted in the fourth round in 2005, Giordano has spent the past four years in Indianapolis but he became an unrestricted free agent in the off-season.

Giordano had 23 tackles in 2008.

Leon Hall has limited ability to drive

Other than going to and from work (with the Cincinnati Bengals) or medical appointments, cornerback Leon Hall won't be allowed to drive.

Hall was arrested for DUI earlier in the month. He had a blood alcohol concentration of .149, which is nearly double the state of Ohio's legal limit of .08.
“He stated that his wife had told him that he needed to get home because she was having a baby,” Trooper N.J. Pabin wrote. “Mr. Hall admitted that he had been drinking.”
The case for Hall will be continued on May 11th.

A new and improved Vince Young in 2009?

Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young, who won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 and lost the starting job last year, says that 2009 will be different.

Young participated in the third annual Celebrity Basketball Game at Tennessee State yesterday. Afterwards, he told Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean that he's going to avoid the "hoopla" (no pun intended) in 2009.
I am just going to keep my mouth closed, man. All I am doing this year is shutting up, just shutting up and working,” Young said. “I am going to smile and shut up and continue being Vince Young, a happy smiling guy. I am not going to get into the hoopla any more because of the fact I can’t win any more, I see.

“I am just going to shut my mouth and play my role and if they need me then I will be available as a weapon.”
Titans coach Jeff Fisher still refers to Young as the team's "franchise QB." However, after re-signing QB Kerry Collins for another two years, Young won't be doing much other than holding a clipboard for the franchise.

Eagles may pursue Anquan Boldin

The Philadelphia Eagles have used the draft to address their need for a starting left tackle by trading away one of their first-round picks (28th overall) to the Buffalo Bills. In addition, the Eagles sent a fourth-round pick and a pick next year for Jason Peters.

Unhappy with his contract situation in Buffalo, Peters was given a contract extension that makes his next six seasons worth $60 million.

With one first-rounder remaining for Saturday's draft, Eagles president Joe Banner hasn't ruled out using that pick to acquire a receiver such as Arizona Cardinal Anquan Boldin.

The Cards have indicated they will entertain trade offers for Boldin, but it is believed they are looking for at least a first- and third-round pick.
"There are teams that start the year with only one first-round draft pick and they've traded them," Banner said. "If we made another trade with a first-round draft pick, we'd just be in the same position as them. I think we'll do whatever we evaluate to be the best move with any of the available players. . . . Some of the evaluation is about the quality of what we have at certain positions."
If the Eagles don't pursue Boldin or another big-time receiver in the trade market, they'll likely draft a top running back with the 21st pick.

Thigpen "not ok" with demotion to second string

Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen, who started 11 games in 2008, hopes to get a chance to start in 2009. However, the Chiefs traded for Matt Cassel, who was franchised by the Patriots and will earn $14 million this season.

During this weekend's mini-camp, Cassel ran the first-team offense and Thigpen led the second-team offense.
It’s life,” Thigpen said Sunday. “Everything happens for a reason. You may not see the reason right now, but I know there’s a reason that they brought a guy in like Matt.

“I’m behind him, and all I’m doing is pushing him, making him better. Hopefully me doing that is going to make this team better.”
Last year, Thigpen threw for 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Barring an injury or sophomoric slump beyond imagination, Thigpen's sole responsibility in 2009 will be maintaining the clipboard.

Jaguars sign Torry Holt to three-year deal

Per Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union, Torry Holt and the Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed on a three-year contract worth $13 million.

Holt will receive base salaries of $4 million this year, which is the only guaranteed money of the contract, $4 million in 2010 and $5 million in 2011. If he meets certain incentives, the value of contract could reach $20 million.

The signing was expected for the 32-year-old receiver, who also visited with the Tennessee Titans.

Holt is one of the all-time great receivers (11th all-time on receptions list). He had 64 receptions for 796 yards in 2008 and will be the Jaguars number one receiver in 2009.

Sheldon Brown feels disrespected by Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown is pulling a Lito Sheppard, who was traded to the New York Jets this off-season.

Unhappy with his contract, which has four years remaining, Brown has asked the Eagles for a trade. However, the Eagles aren't going to renegotiate his contract, which Brown calls "a total lack of respect," nor trade him.
"Sheldon's comments under the circumstances actually serve to devalue him in a trade if we were willing to consider it; which we are not."
Brown, drafted in the second-round by the Eagles in 2002, has 380 career tackles, seven sacks and 14 interceptions.

At 30 years old and under contract until 2012, the Eagles have no reason to re-work his deal.

Demetrius Byrd hospitalized after car accident

Ex-LSU wide receiver Demetrius Byrd was hospitalized after a car accident in his hometown of Miami after his tire blew out and his car struck a utility pole.
"I just spoke with Demetrius' mother and she said that he has mostly bumps and bruises," Byrd's junior college coach, Tim Hatten of Pearl River Community College, told ESPN's Joe Schad. "She said his injuries are not life threatening and should not be football threatening."

"This tragic accident puts in perspective just how fragile life can be," said LSU head coach Les Miles. "Demetrius is an outstanding young man with a bright future ahead of him. He was a joy to coach and he brought a great smile and a wonderful attitude to our football team. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as we hope for a speedy recovery."
Byrd was rated as 22nd-best WR in this year's draft and as a "talented receiver with a great upside." Last year, Byrd finished with 37 receptions, 513 yards and four touchdowns.

Although Byrd's still in the hospital, per his agent David Dunn, "... we are optimistic that he will make a full recovery."

It's great news that Byrd will make a full recovery, but horrible timing for the prospect. He was projected to be a mid-round selection. Now it's likely that he'll go undrafted.

Hines Ward won't be a hold-out this year

Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward is entering the final season of his contract.

Although Ward held out and missed two weeks of training camp in 2005, he says that he won't let that happen again.

Today was the first voluntary practice of the spring and the team will have a mandatory, three-day mini-camp beginning on May 1.
"The contract, we're just going to play and whatever happens happens,'' Ward said.

"I want to be a Steeler . . . I don't want to put on another uniform. I'm late in the game now to worry about it. You look at all the previous players who went on and played for other places. I learned a lot from Jerome [Bettis], what he did. I want to go down in Steelers history to be one of the better wideouts to wear the black and gold."
Ward, the best blocking WR in football, led the Steelers in receiving with 81 receptions, 1043 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 2008.

"Doc" Blanchard has passed away

Felix "Doc" Blanchard, the first underclassman to win the Heisman Trophy, has passed away at 84 years old.

Blanchard, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1945 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959, helped lead Army to a record of 27-0-1 from 1944-1946. Army won back-to-back championships in 1944 and 1945.

He was dubbed "Mr. Inside" while his teammate Glenn Davis was dubbed "Mr. Outside" by a columnist from the New York Sun.

Blanchard scored 38 touchdowns in 28 career games and also played linebacker and was the team's kicker.

Jerry Reese content with Giants receivers?

Per Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News, New York Giants GM Jerry Reese is comfortable with the current group of receivers on the team.

As Vacchiano points out, most of the Giants' receivers are young and have been reasonably high draft picks.

The Giants took Sinorice Moss in the second round in 2006, Steve Smith in the second round in 2007 and Mario Manningham in the third round last year. Domenik Hixon, who was a waiver-wire addition from Denver in 2007, was drafted in the fourth round by Denver in 2006.

All four of those receivers are 25 years old or younger.
"It's not like we have no one at receiver," said an incredulous Reese. "We have some players that we like at wide receiver. We have good receivers on this team."

"I think people are panicked a little bit about the receiver (position)," Reese said. "I don't think we're panicked about it. We have good players that we can win football games with. We have pro football receivers on our team right now. We're going to try to improve it, but sometimes if you can't do that, you go with what you have. You win with the hand that you are dealt and don't look back."
Last year, Hixon led the team in receiving yards (596) and Steve Smith led the team in receptions (57). If the Giants draft a receiver instead of making a trade for a big-time receiver such as Braylon Edwards, Smith and Hixon would likely be the starters. Moss and Manningham would likely compete as the third receiver.

Should G-Men pursue Boldin or Braylon?

With two big-name receivers available via trade, Gary Myers of the Daily News takes a look at who might be the better replacement for Plaxico Burress, who was released this off-season.

The Giants began talking to the Cleveland Browns about Braylon Edwards at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. More recently, the Arizona Cardinals have stated that Anquan Boldin is available for trade if the offer is right.
"Anquan Boldin is a tremendous football player and he's got great hands," one coach said. "He's powerful and a great runner after the catch. Braylon is a more down-the-field guy who can make plays running go routes and deep posts. Anquan is explosive and faster and more powerful than you think. He can make the first guy miss. For the system the Giants run, Edwards will probably fit them more than Anquan. Looking at the routes Plaxico ran, that fits Edwards' style."
Boldin, who has two years remaining on his existing contract, earned his third Pro Bowl trip in 2008. Edwards is entering the final year of his deal.

In 2008, Boldin caught 89 passes for 1038 yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games. Edwards caught 55 passes for 873 yards and three touchdowns. Edwards saw a huge drop-off in production from his breakout year (1289 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns) in 2007.

The main question surrounding Boldin is whether he can be a true number one without someone like Larry Fitzgerald on the other side. The questions surrounding Edwards are his hands (he led the league in drops in 2008) and his desire for the limelight.

If the Giants don't land either Braylon Edwards or Anquan Boldin before next weekend's draft, the Giants could draft a receiver in the first round (pick 29). Some of the receivers that may be available when the Giants pick include Rutgers' Kenny Britt, Maryland's Darrius Heyward-Bey, UNC's Hakeem Nicks and Florida's Percy Harvin.

The 17 most intriguing weekly matchups?

Earlier in the week, the NFL released its 2009 NFL schedule. (Click here to view full schedule.)

After taking a closer look at the schedule, we have selected the best and/or most intriguing matchup of each week. Of course, there is a lot of subjectivity involved, but here goes:

Week 1 - Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots: This was the toughest week to pick only one game. With Terrell Owens beginning a new chapter of his career, is he missing piece that gets the Bills into the playoffs? With Tom Brady returning after a week one season-ending injury in 2008, do they dominate again like they did with him in 2007?

The defending-champion Steelers take on the Titans (remember the towel-stomping incident?) to kick off the season on Thursday, September 10th. Also, Jay Cutler makes his Bears' debut against the Packers in what I view as the league's best rivalry.

Week 2 - New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys: This is the beginning of a new era for the Cowboys as they play their first game in their new billion-dollar stadium. Talent-wise, both teams rank near the top of the NFC. However, locker-room issues have challenged the Cowboys. The Cowboys have parted ways with several players with off-the-field issues (Pacman Jones, Terrell Owens and Tank Johnson). Will the Cowboys experience addition by subtraction in 2009?

Week 3 - Indianapolis Colts at Arizona Cardinals: Since I expect this to be one of the highest-scoring games of the year, it'll likely end up being a 9-6 game. Since 1997, only two Super Bowl losers have made the playoffs the following year. Will the Cards avoid the curse? This will be the Cardinals first game of the year against an opponent that made the post-season in 2008.

Week 4 - San Diego Chargers at Pittsburgh Steelers: With the return of Shawne "Lights Out" Merriman, the Chargers defense should be much improved over last season when they allowed 349.9 yards per game (eighth worst in NFL). Both teams are legitimate Super Bowl contenders and they played each other close (11-10) in 2008.

Week 5 - New England Patriots at Denver Broncos: New Broncos coach Josh McDaniels faces his mentor Bill Belichick. There were rumors that the Patriots leaked the news that Jay Cutler and the Broncos were in the initial trade rumors that sent Matt Cassel to Kansas City.

Week 6 - Baltimore Ravens at Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings, who struggled early last year (1-3), and the Ravens have similar styles - strong defenses (both in top six in fewest yards allowed in 2008) and running games (both in top five in rushing yards in 2008) with less-than-mediocre passing attacks (both in bottom seven in passing yards in 2008).

Week 7 - Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants: This match-up between the last two NFC representatives in the Super Bowl could get a lot more interesting if the Giants replace Plaxico Burress, who was released this off-season, with Anquan Boldin, for whom the Cardinals say they will now entertain offers.

Week 8 - Houston Texans at Buffalo Bills: There are some games between better teams this week. However, the Texans have won eight games the past two seasons and the Bills have won seven games the past three seasons. This is the midway point of the season and it just might be when one of these two teams finally breaks through the mediocrity. If not, Andre Johnson and Terrell Owens should provide some excitement.

Week 9 - San Diego Chargers at New York Giants: This will be the first time that Phillip Rivers and Eli Manning, who were involved in a draft-day trade, face off against each other. The Giants played the Chargers in 2005, but Drew Brees was the Chargers' QB. Another player involved in that trade (via the draft pick used to select him) was Shawne Merriman, who will be back and healthy in 2009.

Week 10 - New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts: Since 2003, the Colts and Patriots have played each other. For the third year in a row, the Patriots will head to Indy. (From 2004-2006, the Colts hit the road for this match-up.) With Tom Brady back (Pats' fans can knock on wood), what's not to love about a Tom Brady-Peyton Manning showdown in prime time?

Week 11 - Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys: This will be the first-game ever between the 'Skins and Cowboys in the new Texas Stadium. The beat-down that occurred on the streets of DC on tax day best sums up the feelings of animosity in this rivalry.

Week 12 - Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens: This is the first of their two match-ups in 2008. Baltimore visits Pittsburgh in week 16. These two bitter rivals met in last year's AFC Championship game and their two matchups in the last third of the season will help determine the winner of the division. This is smash-mouth football at its best.

Week 13 - Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts: In each of the past three seasons, the Colts and Titans have split their in-season series games. This will be the second of their 2009 match-ups and this game could have playoff consequences.

Week 14 - Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears: Franchise QBs are made to win big games. Although Jay Cutler is 17-20 with the Broncos, many of those 20 can be attributed to the Broncos' defense. I expect a three-way battle between these two teams and the Vikings for the NFC North title. So, in the league's best rivalry, does Cutler help the Bears make their final playoff push?

Week 15 - Dallas Cowboys at New Orleans Saints: This is the only Saturday Night Football match-up of the year. The Cowboys have had well-publicized struggles post-November. Since winning the NFC South in 2006, the Saints have missed the playoffs two years in a row despite their talent. This game is likely to be crucial to each team's playoff aspirations.

Week 16 - Denver Broncos at Philadelphia Eagles: Broncos safety Brian Dawkins returns to the team where he was the heart and soul. Philly fans took it hard when the Eagles let him walk via free agency including one fired seasonal Eagles' employee, who will be Dawkins' special guest.

Week 17 - Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys: Last year, the Cowboys were embarrassed by the Eagles in the season finale in a game where the winner would earn a playoff berth. Could this be deja vu all over again?

Of course, the most intriguing games of the season take place after week 17.

Is Ronnie Brown on the trading block?

Michael Lombardi of National Football Post has heard (and he emphasized the word heard) that the Miami Dolphins might be willing to deal RB Ronnie Brown.

As Lombardi points out, Brown only had three games rushing for 100+ yards in 2008 despite rushing for 916 yards on the season.

However, Brown had only 214 carries, which is an average of only 13-14 carries per game. Of all rushers that had more than 916 yards, only one (Derrick Ward of the Giants) had fewer rushing attempts (182).

Brown, the Dolphins first-round pick in 2005 (#2 overall), had 10 rushing touchdowns in 2008.

Before getting injured in week seven in 2007, Brown was averaging a combined 141.6 yards per game (86 rushing and 55.6 receiving) and had four straight weeks of rushing for 100+ yards. He was leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage before the injury.

In any event, as we have seen with Jay Cutler, Anquan Boldin (now available for trade), etc., virtually every player can be traded for the right offer. If Brown's the next, don't be surprised.

Kenny Britt to visit with Browns

The Cleveland Browns haven't scored an offensive touchdown since week 11 (November 17) of the 2008 NFL season.

Since the season ended, they traded away TE Kellen Winslow Jr to the Buccaneers and will likely lose Donte Stallworth, who faces DUI manslaughter charges. In addition, there is a strong possibility that they will trade WR Braylon Edwards with the Giants being the likely destination.

If they enter the 2009 season without Edwards, Stallworth and Winslow, their receiving leader among returning players will be back-up TE Steve Heiden (23 receptions for 249 yards).

The Browns, who hold the fifth overall pick in this year's draft, may draft Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree, the top-rated WR in this year's draft. However, many expect that the Browns add a pass-rusher such as Brian Orakpo of Texas.

Per Steve Wyche of NFL.com, the Browns will visit with a receiver who may or may not be available when they make their second-round pick (number 36 overall). Cleveland will host Rutgers' Kenny Britt on Friday, which is the day before the draft.

Britt (6'3" and 218 pound) finished his three-year career at Rutgers as the Big East conference's all-time leader in receiving yards (3043) and fourth all-time in receptions (178).

Strahan gives Boldin advice

Former New York Giants DE Michael Strahan, who appeared yesterday at Phoenix International Speedway for the Nascar race, gave disgruntled Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin some unsolicited advice.

The advice? Shut up.
"I know he's not happy here but complaining about it in the press really doesn't help you," Strahan said.

Besides, Strahan said, "Playing in Arizona's not so bad. He could be with T.O. (Terrell Owens) in Buffalo. It's colder up there."
Boldin, who has completed two years of his four-year contract, has been unhappy about not getting a contract extension.

Recently, the Cardinals have indicated publicly that they will listen to offers for Boldin. The asking price is believed to be a first- and third-round pick.

Jags and Torry Holt close to a deal?

Free-agent WR Torry Holt is in the final stages of negotiating a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars according to Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union. However, Wright says that a deal is not imminent.

This off-season, the Jaguars released Matt Jones and didn't re-sign Reggie Williams. Both former first-rounders have been busts in the literal sense spending time in jail this off-season.

Holt, who was released by the Rams this off-season, has earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl in his ten-year NFL career, but he's been slowed (literally) by knee issues in recent years. Holt turns 33 in June.

Last year, Holt caught 64 balls for 796 yards and three touchdowns. Before last season, Holt had eight consecutive 1000-yard seasons.

Madden won't re-join Raiders

After John Madden retired from broadcasting, speculation grew that he would re-join the Oakland Raiders organization as a consultant.

As David White of the San Francisco Chronicle points out, Raiders' owner Al Davis said last year that "he would hire a local person with a recognizable profile to help with the personnel department in the near future."

Madden has ruled out a possible return as a consultant to the Raiders due to the time commitment he feels is necessary.
"No," Madden said on his daily appearance on KCBS radio Friday. "I have too much respect for the game and for Al to think that I can do anything. The way the game is today, that's a 20-hour a day job. You can't go in part-time or just stick your toe in the water to be a part of a pro football team. You either do it or you don't."

"That foot in the bucket, half in, half out, I've seen people try that and it doesn't work," Madden said. "So there's no way that I could do anything."
As Raiders coach, Madden compiled a record of 103-32-7, which is an NFL record for winning percentage for coaches with at least 100 wins.

Clemens leading Ratliff in Jets' QB competition

Per Rich Cimini of the Daily News, the early winner of the New York Jets QB competition is Kellen Clemens. Through the first two days of the team's voluntary mini-camp, Clemens has outplayed Brett Ratliff.

According to Cimini, Clemens threw no interceptions in drills after 63 pass attempts unlike Ratliff, who threw three interceptions.
On Clemens: "I thought he looked outstanding," Ryan said. "He did decent the first day, but I really like how he took charge of the offense and really brought that unit out. They had a lot of spark. He made good decisions and showed poise."

On Ratliff: "He made some great throws - he has a talented arm - but he still made a couple of mistakes in there," Ryan said. "I'm sure that will go back and forth as we look at these guys. But I thought, clearly, Clemens had an outstanding day."
Clemens, the Jets' second-round pick in 2006, has thrown 256 career passes over three seasons and has a QB rating of 59.3. He has thrown only five career touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Ratliff, who was undrafted out of Utah, has yet to throw a regular-season pass. However, he looked impressive last pre-season (for whatever that's worth) and generated some buzz. He finished the pre-season completing 68% of his passes (32 for 47) for 499 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

Third-string QB (based on current depth chart) Erik Ainge is not participating in the team's workouts, but both Clemens and Ratliff seem to be enjoying the competition.
"I think if you're in a competition like this every snap you're trying to show whoever is evaluating you, from your teammates all the way up to the general manager, that you've worked hard and you deserve an opportunity to go out there and play on Sunday," Clemens said.

"Competition is a fun thing," Ratliff said. "There is always going to be competition. It makes players better."
The Jets may consider drafting a QB (USC's Mark Sanchez - if still on the board - or Kansas State's Josh Freeman) when they make their first-round pick in next weekend's NFL draft.

Mark Sanchez to workout for Broncos

Stranger things have happened.

However, it's all but guaranteed that Georgia QB Matthew Stafford will be long gone when the Denver Broncos make their first pick.

And USC QB Mark Sanchez will most likely be selected somewhere in the top ten. In fact, I have the San Francisco 49ers selecting Sanchez with the tenth overall pick in my mock draft.

With the 12th and 18th picks in this year's draft, the Broncos might have a shot to take Sanchez at 12 if he falls on draft day. Or the Broncos, who are equipped with five picks in the top 82 picks, could trade up if they deem that Sanchez is their guy.

Per Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos will host Sanchez for a private workout on Tuesday.

Per Mike Mayock of NFL Network, Sanchez is the best of the likely first-round quarterbacks (Stafford, Sanchez and Kansas State's Josh Freeman).
"Sanchez is most accurate of the three," Mayock said. "He might not have as much arm strength. He might not be quite as exciting. But at the end of the day, if I've got a top-10 pick and my job is on the line at the quarterback position, I'm taking Sanchez."
Whether or not they draft Sanchez, the Broncos will likely draft a QB somewhere since they currently have only two QBs on the roster - Orton and Chris Simms.
"You don't want to go into training camp with only two quarterbacks, certainly, but it's doable if that's what the situation is," Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said. "But you would love to have a third quarterback that could be competitive."
Having coached Tom Brady, a former sixth-round pick, and Matt Cassel, a former seventh-round pick, in New England, McDaniels may not feel the need to draft their QB of the future in the first round. Plus, the reason the Broncos took the trade proposal from the Bears over that from the Redskins had to do with McDaniels preference of Kyle Orton over Jason Campbell.

Philly judge hates the Cowboys

Per John Gonzalez of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Judge Patrick Dugan used his passion for football and hatred of the Dallas Cowboys in his campaign.

On fliers for his campaign, one of his accomplishments listed includes "HATES the Dallas Cowboys."
"I've hated the Dallas Cowboys my entire life. When the Eagles beat the Cowboys in 1981 for the NFC championship, I was there. I was there with 15 buddies at the top of the Vet. It was like we won the Super Bowl."
As a reminder to Dugan, the Philadelphia Eagles have never won a Super Bowl. However, his hated Cowboys have five rings. (Complete Super Bowl results history)

Bengals claim Gary Russell off waivers

Running back Gary Russell, who was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, will remain in the AFC North.

The Cincinnati Bengals claimed Russell off waivers yesterday.

Russell had 28 carries for 77 yards and three touchdowns in the regular season. He added two more touchdowns in the post-season.

He's expected to be the primary back-up to Cedric Benson next year.

Bills sign Dominic Rhodes

Per NFL.com, the Buffalo Bills have signed RB Dominic Rhodes to a two-year contract.

The NFL suspended Marshawn Lynch, the team's leading rusher the past two seasons, for the first three games of the 2009 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

In addition to Lynch's suspension, back-up Fred Jackson is unhappy with his contract and hasn't showed up for the voluntary off-season workout program.

Rhodes, who provides the Bills with flexibility, finished with 538 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 2008. He also had 45 receptions for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

Jason Peters to Eagles for draft picks

Yesterday offensive tackle prospect Jason Smith of Baylor, who transitioned from TE to OT in 2006, visited with the Philadelphia Eagles.

And the Eagles starting left tackle for 2009 (and beyond) will be a player named Jason that was a converted TE...however, his last name isn't Smith.

The Buffalo Bills have traded Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters to the Eagles for three draft picks. The Bills will receive one of the Eagles' two first-round picks (28th overall) and their fourth-round pick in 2009 as well as an undisclosed pick in 2010.
Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “He is a powerful and athletic tackle and I have admired his play over the last few years on film. I have always believed that success in the National Football League is derived from the strong play of the offensive and defensive lines. This offseason we have added two young, top-flight offensive linemen in Jason and Stacy Andrews.”
The Eagles had been identified as the most logical trading partner for Peters since the Eagles lost Tra Thomas via free agency and they had the most overall draft picks (12) this year as well as two first-rounders.

Per the Buffalo News, right tackle Langston Walker will transition to left tackle and the Bills will try to use the 28th pick (acquired from Philly) to draft a right tackle such as Phil Loadholt of Oklahoma.

Per ESPN, Peters gets a four-year extension that will pay him $60 million over the next six seasons. Last year, Peters, who was unhappy with his existing contract, held out until two days before the season started and was fined a total of $600,000.

While Peters certainly won't be a holdout in 2009, will he live up to the size of his contract?

LJ to participate at Chiefs' mini-camp

Kansas City Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has been participating in the team's off-season workout program. Now, he will participate in the team's three-day voluntary mini-camp that begins today (Friday).

Johnson, who previously expressed his desire to leave KC, must realize that he has little value to other teams. As we've seen with the LaDainian Tomlinson situation in San Diego, teams don't like to pay a lot for running backs, especially ones that are fast approaching 30 years old.

LJ turns 30 on November 19th. However, he won't be able to celebrate it in a KC club past 9 p.m. since he's on probation for the next two years following a pair of nightclub incidents.

Before Johnson lost a grievance hearing against the team, it was speculated that the Chiefs would release Johnson if they had won. Since they still haven't released him, his agent (Peter Schaffer) believes the Chiefs are interested in keeping him.
"If it was a foregone conclusion that the Chiefs would cut Larry I don't think he'd be going to the minicamp," Schaffer said. "We're planning on moving on. That's why Larry is with the team."
Whether or not the Chiefs release Johnson this off-season, there is no chance that he remains with the team until his contract expires (2012).

Barring a miraculous turnaround a la Miami or Atlanta last year, there won't be much excitement in Kansas City. So if LJ stays in KC, I'm setting the over/under for LJ-Todd Haley sideline confrontations to make ESPN's SportsCenter at 5 1/2.

Michigan to allow Paulus to compete for starting QB gig

Rich Rodriguez and the Michigan Wolverines will allow Duke point guard Greg Paulus to compete for the job of starting QB. Paulus attended the last practice of the spring on Tuesday.

Paulus was the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a senior QB for Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. However, he hasn't played competitive football for the past four years that he's spent at Duke.

Preferring to play QB, Paulus was given the opportunity to try out as a slot receiver for Duke football.
"The quarterback position is like being the point guard," Paulus said. "You get the ball every possession and every play. That's exciting to me."
Steven Threet, who started the majority of Michigan games last year, transferred out. Paulus would compete with Nick Sheridan, who broke his leg this spring, and freshmen Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson.

Lions sign Ronald Curry

Per the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions signed wide receiver Ronald Curry and fullback Terrelle Smith.

Spending much of last season in the Raiders' dog house, Curry finished the season with only 19 receptions and 181 yards in 13 games.

In fact, before the Broncos' game last year, Curry found out he was starting by a reporter and responded "that's news to me."

His production declined considerably from 2006 and 2007 when he had 727 and 717 receiving yards, respectively.

Smith spent the past two seasons in Arizona.

Baylor's Jason Smith visits with Eagles

Per Chris Steuber of Scout.com, Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith visited today with the Philadelphia Eagles, who hold the 21st and 28th overall picks in this year's draft.

General manager Tom Heckert expects the Eagles to know who will replace Tra Thomas at left tackle by this year's draft.

Thomas signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent this off-season.

If the Eagles want to draft Smith, who is a consensus top-five pick, they will need to move up in the draft. I expect Smith to go to the St. Louis Rams with the second overall pick in my mock draft.

Not only do the Eagles have two first-rounders, but they have the most picks (12) in this year's draft. The teams at the top of the draft (Detroit, St. Louis and Kansas City) are interested in trading down in the draft.

If the Eagles don't trade up to select a tackle (or trade for Bills disgruntled tackle Jason Peters), they will move either Todd Herremans or Shawn Andrews from guard to tackle

49ers give extensions to Haralson and Nedney

Per the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers have signed OLB Parys Haralson and kicker Joe Nedney to contract extensions.

Haralson, the 49ers' fifth-round pick in 2006, was signed to a four-year contract extension that will keep in San Francisco until 2013. Nedney was signed through the 2011 season.
It’s outstanding," Singletary said of Haralson's contract extension. "Parys is only going to get better. He is the ultimate ‘blue-collar’ guy. He’ll give you all he has day in and day out. You give me 10 others just like Parys and we could win championships. I am very happy for him.”
Leading the Niners with eight sacks, Haralson was second in the NFC (and fifth in the NFL) in sacks among linebackers in 2008. His eight sacks were the most by a 49er since Andre Carter had 12.5 sacks in 2002.

John Madden retires

At 73, John Madden is retiring from broadcasting. Madden says his health isn't an issue, but he would like to spend more time with his family.

Former Bengals WR and NBC studio analyst Chris Collingsworth will replace Madden in the booth.

The last game Madden called was Super Bowl XLIII.
“The last game I did was the Super Bowl, which was pretty good,” Madden said. “But, again, that wasn’t planned. I didn’t say, ’I want to go out on a high note.”’
Madden, who led the Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory in 1979, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.

Saints sign Anthony Waters

The New Orleans Saints have signed free-agent linebacker Anthony Waters.

Waters, who was drafted in the third round by the Chargers in 2007, has played in seven games in the two seasons he spent in San Diego.

He has made three tackles on defense as well as three stops and a fumble recovery on special teams.

Eagles may try to trade up for a tackle

Per Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Eagles general manager Tom Heckert expects that the Eagles to know who their starting left tackle will be after the NFL draft (April 25-26).

The Eagles, who have two first-round picks (21st and 28th overall), might trade up in the draft to select a left tackle.

While they likely won't be able to trade into the top 5 to select Jason Smith of Baylor or Eugene Monroe of Virginia, they may be able to trade into the top 10 if they target Alabama's Andre Smith.

Heckert says that the controversy surrounding Andre Smith's situation at the NFL combine, where he decided at the last minute to not work out and then disappeared, has been overblown.
"You just have to look into [the problems]," Heckert said. "We've kind of made the combine such a media spectacle, which is fine, but what happened [in Indianapolis] really wasn't that big of a deal. The kid is a good kid. It was just something that happened and it snowballed. If the guy is a good player, he's still going to be a good player."
Speculation has linked the Eagles as a trade partner for Bills' tackle Jason Peters. However, Heckert says the Eagles haven't had any talks with Peters' agent.

If the Eagles don't trade up in the draft or trade for Peters, they would likely move either Todd Herremans or Shawn Andrews from guard to left tackle.

Cowboys fan knocks out Cowboys hater in D.C.

Who says the Dallas Cowboys have no heart?

It's not true. While it may not necessarily apply to their players, it definitely applies to their fans.

In D.C., someone snatched a Cowboys' flag off a car and threw it down on the ground. The Cowboys' fan then took matters in his own hands.
One witness said she saw a "big tall man walk up to this guy and hit him across the head." Then, she said, the tall man "got back in his car and drove off."

"He was out cold for a good five minutes or so," the witness said.
Cowboys flag for your vehicle: $24.99 from NFLShop.com

Seeing a (presumably) Redskins fan get what he deserves: priceless.

Anquan Boldin available for trade?

Let the bidding war begin.

The Arizona Cardinals have stated today that WR Anquan Boldin is available for trade. Although they would prefer to work out a long-term contact extension, the Cardinals are willing to consider offers.
“Before the draft, you know there is going to talk about Anquan and his situation and a trade,” [coach Ken] Whisenhunt said. “Since not a whole lot has changed with his contractual situation, we know that will come back up.

“It would be foolish from our standpoint not to listen to those opportunities and see what actually exists. But I want to make the point … our goal is to re-sign him to a long-term deal. That hasn’t changed.”
With two years remaining on his four-year contract, the Cardinals don't have to do anything if the offer isn't right. And despite being unhappy about his contract, Boldin has been professional on and off the field.

There are several teams that could use a wide receiver, such as the Giants, Browns, Niners, etc.

And apparently Whisenhunt was paying attention to the McJayGate drama in Denver.
“Our biggest fear is that if it gets out, ‘They are discussing a trade with this team.’ We just want to acknowledge there have been teams that have called and we will listen as one of our options.”
Boldin, the Cardinals' second-round pick in 2003, earned his third trip to the Pro Bowl in 2008. In 12 games, he finished with 89 receptions for 1038 yarsd and 11 touchdowns.

Thomas Jones won't be at Jets' mini-camp

The New York Jets voluntary mini-camp starts tomorrow at Florham Park.

One player that won't be at the three-day session is RB Thomas Jones. Jones hasn't been attending the voluntary workout program either.

Jones, who led the AFC in rushing last year, is unhappy with his contract.

I've seen some mock drafts that have the Jets taking a running back with their first-round pick. Considering Jones is 31 years old, I would expect the Jets to address the running back position at some point in the draft whether or not it's in the first round.

The Jets have a mandatory mini-camp in June. Jones won't be fined for missing the voluntary session, but he would be fined if he skips the mandatory session in June.

Lions claim Will Franklin off waivers

The Detroit Lions actually won something.

They beat out four other teams (Rams, Eagles, Colts and Raiders) in claiming WR Will Franklin off waivers. Franklin was released by the Chiefs Monday.

(Calvin) Johnson and (Bryant) Johnson are the starters in Detroit at WR, but the move adds depth for the Lions' receiving corps.

Franklin, a Chiefs' fourth-round pick in 2008, had seven receptions for 83 yards last year.

Greg Paulus offered tryout as Duke WR

Duke basketball point guard Greg Paulus worked out with the Green Bay Packers last week and he watched a University of Michigan practice yesterday. Since he has one year of eligibility remaining and Michigan doesn't have a clear-cut starter at QB, Michigan may provide Paulus an opportunity to play.

Duke football coach David Cutliffe says "no way" that Paulus, whose brother is a back-up QB for UNC, could come try out for QB. Instead, he'd be willing to let him try out as a slot receiver.
"He's a quarterback at heart, but there was no way he was going to be able to compete and play quarterback for us," Cutcliffe said. "I think that was the deciding factor. Prior to our last six practices, I was going to try to get him out, give him a chance to work at slot receiver. He's a fierce competitor, a great young man. He's been a tremendous basketball player."
Paulus was the nation's Gatorade Player of the Year in high school football and four-time N.Y. All-State QB.

Detroit Lions QB Drew Henson, who left Michigan after his junior year to play baseball for the Yankees, is the first to come to mind when I think about Paulus' situation even though Henson left football in college - not after high school like Paulus.

Had Henson not left Michigan and played his senior season, he might have been the #1 overall draft pick. Instead, he's been a journeyman back-up that has played for the Cowboys, Vikings and Lions since 2004.

April is NFL Special Teams month, sort-of

Last night in Reno, Buffalo Bills assistant Bobby April won his second NFL Special Teams Coach of the Year award as selected by his peers.

The Bills averaged 15.5 yards per punt return and they scored three special teams touchdowns in 2008.

April won the award in 2004 as well.

Is an Eagles' seat worth six felony charges?

Five teenagers broke into Lincoln Financial Field, where the Philadelphia Eagles play, and tried to steal a seat. Security cameras spotted them at 3 a.m. this morning.

They are being charged with six felony crimes including burglary and criminal trespass as well as one misdemeanor.

Perhaps they are just hoping to follow in the footsteps of their NFL heroes, who get arrested at a rate alarming enough that Pro Football Talk set up an NFL police blotter.

Jones-Drew and Jags agree on contract extension

The Jacksonville Jaguars and RB Maurice Jones-Drew have agreed to a four-year contract extension.

Jones-Drew, who has split time and carries with Fred Taylor, is third in touchdowns (40) behind San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson and Philadelphia's Brian Westbrook over the past three seasons.

The Jaguars released Fred Taylor this off-season and Jones-Drew will be expected to carry the load. Before reaching agreement on the extension, Jones-Drew was due to earn $535,000 in 2009.

Per ESPN, Jones-Drew now becomes the third-highest paid RB in the NFL behind only Jackson and Johnson.

Greg Paulus watches a Michigan practice

Not only did ex-Duke point guard Greg Paulus have a workout with the Green Bay Packers last week, but Paulus is considering transferring to Michigan since he has one year of college football eligibility remaining.

Per FoxSports.com, Paulus watched Michigan's practice on Tuesday. Michigan doesn't have a clear-cut starting QB so a school without an established starter would make the most sense if he uses his only year of college football eligibility.

Although Paulus chose basketball over football out of high school, he was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2004 and a four-time All-State selection in New York as a quarterback.

In his high school career, Paulus threw for 11,763 yards and 152 touchdowns.

He has also been contacted by a half-dozen other NFL teams as well as other schools according to FoxSports.com.

Daren Stone suspended for four games

Former Ravens safety Daren Stone, who signed with the team in the middle of last season, has been suspended for four games by the NFL for unknown reasons per Foxsports.com.

Stone, who was drafted by the Falcons in the sixth round in 2007, is currently a free agent (and likely to remain that way).

In addition to playing for the Falcons and Ravens, he was signed (and released a week later) by the Dallas Cowboys last October.

Travis Henry signed plea deal

Ex-Broncos RB Travis Henry has signed a plea deal with prosecutors that means he will face one cocaine charge instead of three. All three charges each carry a minimum jail sentence of 10 years in prison.

In addition to the jail sentence, Henry faces a $4 million fine and five years of supervised release.

An informant described Henry as "the money guy."

However, with nine children to support (all by different mothers), Henry has said that he is broke.

Despite his troubles, Henry can serve as the perfect role model. However, the trick is to think what would Travis do in this situation ... and then do the opposite.

Leach suspends McKinner Dixon indefinitely

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is "sick and tired" of Tech junior DE McKinner Dixon, who has been suspended indefinitely due to academic issues per the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

This problem isn't new for Dixon, who flunked out of school after his freshman season. He attended Cisco Junior College in his sophomore season.
"We've got 130 people out there," Leach said. "I'm getting sick and tired of wasting time on a handful of people who can't do what they're told. It's like the 95-5 [idea]: You spend 95 percent of your time on 5 percent of your players. Baloney. I'm not doing that."
Dixon was second on the team in sacks (9) in 2008 behind Brandon Williams, who had 13 sacks and left the program early for the NFL draft.

April 14, 2009

Charlie Batch back with Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers will re-sign QB Charlie Batch to back-up Ben Roethlisberger. Batch will earn a base salary of $745,000.

Byron Leftwich, who served as Roethlisberger's back-up after Batch got hurt last year, signed a two-year contract with the Bucs.

Batch served as primary back-up in 2007 when he completed 17 of 36 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions.

The other QB in the roster is Dennis Dixon, who was drafted in the fifth round last year.

Jets won't make offer to Miles Austin

When Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released Terrell Owens, he said that the development of Miles Austin was a key factor in his decision.

Austin, who is a restricted free agent, visited with the New York Jets last week. Although he left New Jersey without an offer, it was reported that the Jets were interested in making an offer to Austin.

However, the Jets have decided to not extend an offer to Austin per Rich Cimini of the Daily News.

If the Jets made an offer to Austin, the Cowboys would have had seven days to match the offer sheet. If they didn't, they would have received the Jets' second-round pick as compensation for the loss.

If/when Austin signs his tender offer with the Cowboys, he will earn a guaranteed salary of $1.545 million for 2009.

Is Stafford to Detroit a "done deal"?

Per Pro Football Talk, Georgia junior QB Matthew Stafford is telling his former Georgia teammates that he will be the Lions selection as the first overall pick in this year's draft.

In fact, Stafford is calling it a "done deal."

Coming off an 0-16 season, it would be difficult to sell the turnaround story to Lions fans if they entered the 2009 season with Daunte Culpepper, Drew Stanton and Drew Henson as their QBs as Gary Myers of the Daily News points out.

With Stafford, who attended the same high school as Bobby Layne did, and receiver Calvin Johnson, the Lions will be armed (no pun intended) with big-play potential for the next decade.

Falcons interested in Tony Gonzalez?

The top tight end for the Atlanta Falcons, who surprised many by earning a playoff berth, averaged less than one reception per game in 2008.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who finished with a dismal 2-14 record, have the NFL's all-time leader in receptions among tight ends and he averaged six receptions per game in 2008.

Per Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post, the Falcons are "seriously considering" offering their second-round pick (number 55 overall) to the Chiefs for Tony Gonzalez, who has expressed his lack of interest in being part of a rebuilding effort.

Gonzalez, the Chiefs' first-round pick in 1997, has 916 receptions, 10,940 receiving yards and 76 touchdowns in his career. However, the Chiefs are 0-3 in playoff appearances during that span.

Dockery signs his tender

New York Giants cornerback Kevin Dockery signed his one-year tender that will pay him a guaranteed salary of $1.54 million in 2009.

Dockery had 36 tackles and one interception in 2008 as a back-up to Corey Webster and Aaron Ross.

He was undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2006.

MSU RB Winston sentenced to 180 days in jail

Michigan State RB Glenn Winston was sentenced to 180 days in jail for his role in fight with A.J. Sturges, a Michigan State hockey player. He will begin serving his sentence on Friday.

Sturges suffered severe head injuries from the fight.

In addition to Winston, Michigan State receiver Mitchell White was sentenced to 30 days in jail for his involvement.

Winston was suspended indefinitely last month by coach Mark Dantonio.

Whitner is formally charged after arrest

Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner was celebrating the birthday of Ted Ginn Jr, his high school and Ohio State teammate who now plays for the Miami Dolphins, at the House of Blues in Cleveland this weekend.

Early Saturday morning, Whitner was arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after trying to join a "near riot." Today, he was formally charged.

His court date is set for April 28th.
"Whitner began swinging his arms in a violent manner and, when restrained by officers, he broke free and took a fighting stance," the Cleveland Police statement read. "An officer then deployed his Taser on Whitner, debilitating him enough that officers were able to place him in handcuffs."
Although Whitner plans to sue, he apologized through a statement by his agent.
"It's not how I wish to conduct myself, and I apologize to all those involved," he said in a statement released through agent Neil Cornrich.
Last month, Whitner's Bills' teammate Marshawn Lynch, who has been arrested twice in the past two off-seasons, was suspended for three games this season by NFL commissioner.

Whether or not Whitner gets suspended, the Bills have been making the news for all the wrong reasons this off-season.

Andre Smith fires agent

NFL draft prospect Andre Smith, junior left tackle from Alabama, has fired his agent (Alvin Keels) and he will replace him with Ian Greengross according to Ian Rapaport of The Birmingham News.

Per Rapaport, Smith can't officially retain the services of Greengross until the five-day waiting period ends on Thursday.

Smith had a shot at being selected with the number one overall pick before several poor choices. After having some dealings with an agent, Smith was suspended for the Sugar Bowl.

At the NFL combine, Smith decided at the last minute to not work out since he wasn't ready. Then, to the surprise of many teams, Smith pulled a disappearing act.

As it stands, I expect the Cincinnati Bengals to take Smith in my mock draft, which will be released soon. That likely means he'll be playing anywhere but Cincy.

Legend Harry Kalas passes away

Legendary broadcaster Harry Kalas died today after passing out in the broadcast booth before the Phillies-Nationals game began.

Kalas was voice-over narrator for NFL Films since 1975 and he joined the Phillies broadcast team in 1971.
"His substance was his style," NFL Films President Steve Sabol said of Kalas, with whom he co-hosted This is the NFL in the 1980s. "There was no shtick, just a steady blend of crisp articulation and resonance.

"In many ways, Harry is the narrator of our memories. His voice lives on not only on film, but inside the heads of everyone who has watched and listened to NFL Films."
Kalas was inducted into the broadcaster's wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
"Major League Baseball has lost one of the great voices of our generation," MLB commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Baseball announcers have a special bond with their audience, and Harry represented the best of baseball not only to the fans of the Phillies, but to fans everywhere."
His signature call was his "outta here" homerun call, but his memory will live on. May he rest in peace.

Steelers, Harrison agree to six-year, $51.175 deal

If the rule is the Pittsburgh Steelers don't re-sign thirty-something players to big contracts, linebacker James Harrison is the exception to the rule.

The Steelers and Harrison have agreed to a six-year contract that is worth $51.175 million with $20 million guaranteed.
"James is very pleased," said Bill Parise, Harrison's agent. "He had made it very clear to me that he would like to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. I think he's a little relieved that that's going to be taken care of."
Last year, Harrison, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, set the team sack record last year with 16 and returned an interception 100 yards in Super Bowl XLIII.

Will Michigan State use the option next year?

Michigan State could use the option in 2009. At least, if you go by what Spartans coach Mark Dantonio says.
"We got the option," Dantonio said as he ran to the practice field after meeting with reporters. "We'll just leave it at that."
However, last year's tailback Javon Ringer doesn't expect for the option to be a big part of their offense.
"What?" Ringer said when initially asked. He then said: "I know he's opening the playbook. They are probably going to do all types of stuff."
Dantonio says that there is still a QB competition between Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol to replace Brian Hoyer and none of the running backs have separated themselves in the competition to replace Ringer.

Is no news good news on Brandon Marshall?

If you were to ask Mike Klis of the Denver Post that question, his answer would be yes.

Klis argues that if NFL commissioner Roger Goodell were going to suspend Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall for an extended period of time, he would do so before the NFL draft. Last month, Goodell suspended Buffalo Bills RB Marshawn Lynch for three games.

His argument is that the Broncos would respond to a lengthy suspension for Marshall by drafting a receiver on the first day (first two rounds) on the NFL draft. Therefore, it would only be fair for Goodell to hand down such a suspension prior to draft day.

Marshall, the Broncos' fourth-round pick in 2006, was arrested on March 1st in Atlanta, but the charges were dropped the next day.

After being suspended for week one, Marshall finished 2008 with 104 receptions for 1265 yards and six touchdowns.

Charlie Weis considered calling it quits

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis admitted to briefly thinking about walking away from Notre Dame.

After the Syracuse loss, Weis kept Charlie Jr. home from school for three days.
"We talked about all that as a family, and we felt that we didn't want to leave that way," Weis said. "That would have been the easy way out. That's not why we came here."
Notre Dame has never lost more games in a two-year span as it has under Weis during the past two seasons. Last year, the Fighting Irish finished 7-6. In 2007, they finished 3-9.

The Irish ended last season on a positive note by blowing out the Hawaii Warriors 49-21 in the Hawaii Bowl. Then Weis pulled off a recruiting coup when linebacker Manti Te'o, a top recruit from Hawaii that was also being recruited by USC, chose Notre Dame.

However, if the momentum that is building doesn't carry over and translate into wins (and lots of them) in 2009, Weis will be "quitting" by the end of the season.

Steelers have high hopes for Limas Sweed

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed, selected in the second round last year, expects to make a big jump from 2008 to 2009.

Of course, with only six receptions last year and a big drop in the AFC Championship game, Sweed has set the bar low.

Entering his senior season, however, Sweed was a pre-season All-American who suffered a wrist injury that ended his season early. And the adjustment for rookie receivers can be one of the most difficult to make out of college.
"I think that's a big thing," Sweed said, repeating a refrain often heard by rookie receivers. "When I was out there thinking so much I couldn't get from point A to point B as fast as I can when I'm not thinking. It's just thinking too much."
I thought the Steelers had two steals on the first day of the 2008 NFL draft by selecting RB Rashard Mendenhall with the 23rd overall pick and Sweed in the second round. It's too early to judge whether I was right or wrong, but the good news is there is no where to go but up for both of those players.

Percy Harvin - first-rounder or not?

Based on character concerns, Pro Football Weekly ranked their list of riskiest first-round prospects in this year's NFL draft. The player sitting at the top of that list is Florida's talented wide receiver Percy Harvin.

Harvin has been linked to a low Wonderlick score, marijuana usage and a lack of "coachability." All are rumors until confirmed, however, perception is often reality.
"He's as talented as anyone in the draft this year," said Gil Brandt, the longtime general manager of Tom Landry's Dallas Cowboys and now a draft analyst for NFL.com. "But he has those off-field problems, and that's going to knock him down a little bit."
Brandt points out that some times an agent of another player at your position could leak information about another player's character.
"If you move up from the 12th spot to the ninth spot, there might be $3 million involved," Brandt said. "How did someone find out about Harvin? Did Kenny Britt's agent do this? Did (Darius) Heyward-Bay's? You just don't know."
I guess everything is fair in love, war and the NFL draft.

Big changes coming to Browns' offense?

Per Michael Lombardi of National Football Post, the Cleveland Browns are engaged in talks with teams on trades for QB Brady Quinn and WR Braylon Edwards.

According to Lombardi, two teams are interested in Quinn and there is currently an offer of a first-round pick for Quinn on the table. However, the Browns may be looking for more.

Browns coach Eric Mangini has said that there will be an open competition between Quinn and Derek Anderson.

Lombardi also says that the Browns have a first-round offer for Edwards and believes he will be traded before the start of the season. In addition, the Browns are interested in Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree, who has been compared to Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald.

Gibril Wilson thinks secondary can be league's best

Miami Dolphins free safety Gibril Wilson, signed in the off-season, was interviewed on WQAM radio by Kim Bokamper on his "Dolphins Tonight" show.

Wilson feels the sky is the limit for the secondary.
"I think we're going to be a very tight-knit group," Wilson said, "and I think we can be the best secondary in the league if we all just put our heads together and put the talent together and make it happen."
The Dolphins lost cornerback Andre Goodman via free agency to Denver. Eric Allen, who played with Arizona, will replace Goodman. The other starters will be Wilson, strong safety Yeremiah Bell and left cornerback Will Allen.

No matter how closely they "put their heads together," they Dolphins have as much chance of being the "best secondary in the league" as I have of being the next American Idol.

However, I do expect the Dolphins to draft a cornerback in my mock draft, which will be released within the next day or two.

Bucs to sign Leftwich to two-year deal

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and free-agent QB Byron Leftwich have agreed to a two-year deal according to ESPN.

Last year, Leftwich played well in a back-up to Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. In five games of action, he had a QB rating of 104.3 and threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns.

The other three QBs on the Buccaneers' roster are Josh McCown, Josh Johnson and Brian Griese.

The question is will the Bucs add a third Josh in two weeks at the NFL draft. Before this move, I expected the Bucs to draft Kansas State QB Josh Freeman.

Quintin Demps won't try to be Brian Dawkins

When the Philadelphia Eagles allowed safety Brian Dawkins to leave via free agency, the move angered many Eagles' fans. Even one Eagles' employee lost his job after demonstrating his frustration through a Facebook post.

As you can imagine, Dawkins' replacement Quintin Demps expects the fans and locals to take some of their frustrations out on him. However, he intends to not take it personally and instead focus on what is within his control.
"I know I'm going to hear it," Quintin Demps said after a recent workout at the NovaCare Complex. "I'm already hearing it. Everybody wants to know how I'm going to handle replacing Dawk. But I don't look at it that way. Dawk was Dawk, and he was a great player. I'm me, and I'm just going to go out there and play the way I'm capable of. I can't worry about the rest of it."
While Demps isn't shooting to be Dawkins, coach Andy Reid says that's something that Demps should "shoot for."
"Quintin Demps is not Brian Dawkins, but he was able to see what Brian Dawkins did and how he went about his business," Reid said. "I think it's a great goal for Quintin Demps to shoot for. He should try to be as good as Brian was. To say he's there now, that's not fair because you're talking about one of the all-time greats."
Despite the pressure to succeed one of the most beloved players in Eagles' history, Demps is confident in his abilities.
"People are going to see a different player than they've ever seen before," he said. "They're going to see somebody with a lot of swagger, with a lot of intensity.

"This is what I've prepared all my life for. There's no pressure on me. I'm a football player, and I have a lot of confidence in my ability."
Demps, the Eagles' fourth-round pick last year, became more involved the Eagles defense on Thanksgiving, which was the first time the Eagles played the Cardinals.

In the last five games of the year, he had 12 of his 16 tackles and he had nine tackles in the Eagles' two playoff games.

Al Wilson to be inducted into local Hall of Fame

Former Denver Broncos linebacker Al Wilson is going to be inducted into the Jackson-Madison County (TN) Sports Hall of Fame this Thursday night.
"My mother called and told me, and I was very excited. I'm just an average Joe from Jackson, and I just don't think it has hit me yet."
Wilson was a first-team All-American at the University of Tennessee in the 1998-1999 season, which is the year they beat Florida State for the national championship.

His former college coach at Tennessee (Phil Fullmer) will introduce him. Wilson says the interest in him that Fulmer showed was the "convincing factor" in selecting Tennessee over the over colleges he was considering.
"He was the convincing factor for me," Wilson said. "The first day coaches could visit recruits, Coach Fulmer was picking me up and taking me to school. He was interested.

"And it's an honor to have the greatest (football) coach in UT's history as the guest speaker," Wilson said. "To have him in Jackson to speak, I'm speechless."
In his NFL career, Wilson, the Broncos' first-round pick in 1999, is a five-time Pro Bowler, but he was salary-cap casualty of the Broncos in April 2007. He officially retired on September 10, 2008.

Ocho Cinco to remain a Bengal for 2009?

Ever since Chad Ocho Cinco, the Bengals' receiver formerly known as Chad Johnson, didn't show up for the Bengals' off-season workout program, speculation about his future with the team has run rampant.

After all, he had previously stated that he would attend everything.

A false report on Bleacher Report had him in Oakland and then ESPN's Michael Smith talked about the possibility of Ocho Cinco landing in Philly.

The Cincinnati Enquirer believes that since Ocho Cinco and his agent (Drew Rosenhaus) aren't publicly expressing their interest in being anywhere other than Cincy like they did last year that he'll likely remain in Cincinnati in 2009.

Per the Enquirer, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis issued a challenge to Ocho Cinco at the owner's meetings last month:
"In order to get back to being the Chad Johnson that everybody feared, he was a guy who worked very, very hard at his craft. And if you don't do that, it falls away very quickly and people forget about you."
Playing with a torn labrum in his shoulder, Ocho Cinco had his worst season in 2009. He had 53 receptions for 540 yards and four touchdowns. Last season ended his streak of six consecutive 1000-yard receiving seasons.

Chiefs sign Zach Thomas

Per Adam Teicher of The Kansas City Star, the Chiefs have signed linebacker Zach Thomas. The terms of the deal weren't mentioned, but he is likely to have signed for the league minimum.

The Chiefs have been awful for the past two years. There are two ways to change the culture of losing - a youth movement and/or adding veteran leadership.

Last year, the Chiefs had 12 overall draft picks and had a solid draft.

Although Thomas is closer to 40 than to 30, he brings veteran leadership to a team that has a lot of whiners - Larry Johnson, Brian Waters, etc.

He is likely to start this year as one of the ILB positions. Mike Vrabel, who came to KC as part of the Matt Cassel deal, and Derrick Johnson are also expected to start.

The Chiefs, who hold the third overall pick in this year's draft, will likely select Aaron Curry of Wake Forest, who many believe is the safest pick in this year's draft.

Dustin Keller to bulk up; big season in 2009?

Speaking to Eric Allen of newyorkjets.com, New York Jets TE Dustin Keller discusses Chris Baker, his blocking and the Jets' QBs.

Keller says that Baker was a good mentor and, even though the Jets and Patriots are rivals, he expects Baker to fit in well with his new team. He's currently throwing with both Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff twice per week and they are "both looking really good" now.

In an attempt to become a better blocker, Keller is looking to add a little weight. He currently weighs 245 pounds, but wants to get up to 250 to “become more of a full-time guy.”
“I became more comfortable with the offense as the year progressed,” Keller said. “I worked on blocking with Coach Devlin on hand placement and footwork and things should get better from here on out.”
Keller had a four-game stretch in November (week 10-13) where he caught 27 passes for 313 yards. After that run, he seemed to land in Mangini's doghouse for some reason and his production fizzled down the stretch.

With Laverneus Coles in Cincinnati and a year under his belt in (offensive coordinator) Brian Schottenheimer's offense, I believe Keller will have a monster sophomore season in 2009.

In 2009, I project a season of 75 receptions, 900 yards and 7 touchdowns for Keller.

Raiders to workout Heyward-Bey

The Oakland Raiders hold the seventh overall pick in this year's NFL draft. And Raiders' owner Al Davis loves himself receivers with speed.

So, does that mean that the Raiders will take Maryland's Darrius Heyward-Bey, who ran the fastest 40 time at the NFL combine (4.30), with the number seven pick?

Per Ken Murray of The Baltimore Sun, the Raiders worked out Heyward-Bey today at the University of Maryland.

Unless the Raiders trade down, I don't expect them to select Heyward-Bey in the first round even if NFL Network's Mike Mayock does. I expect the Raiders to take Missouri WR Jeremy Maclin.

More details on Donte Whitner's arrest

There are more details about the arrest of Bills safety Donte Whitner, who was arrested in Cleveland on charges of aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest early this morning.

Per the Buffalo News, Whitner was subdued by taser by off-duty officers as Whitner attempted to join the fracas of a "near riot" that was taking place outside of Cleveland's House of Blues.
"Officers attempting to control the scene denied Whitner access to the area at which time he attempted to force his way past the officers in an aggressive manner," Cleveland police said in a statement.
A birthday party for former Buckeye teammate Ted Ginn Jr. was going on in the club, but it's not known whether Whitner was there to celebrate with Ginn.

Aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest carry maximum penalties of 180 days and 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine and a $750 fine, respectively.

Vikings remove 78 guys from draft board

The Minnesota Vikings have knocked 78 guys off their draft board due to character and/or injury concerns.

After a thorough background check, a player can get the "red dot," which will lead to their removal from the Vikings' draft list. Once a player is marked with a "red dot," it cannot be removed.
"You don't want to bring a guy in that the coaches don't want," [Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick] Spielman said. "That's where you kind of get into some scenarios that, 'OK, why don't we want this guy in? Does he fit our offense? Is it the type of character guy [we want]?' ... Everybody gets to weigh in their opinions, and we decide what's best for the organization."
The Vikings, who have the 22nd overall pick, could target an offensive tackle, wide receiver or cornerback with their first pick.

The NFL allows for visits with 30 players from non-area schools and the Vikings have met with 28 players thus far.

Per the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, some of the players include: receivers Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland), Percy Harvin (Florida) and Hakeem Nicks (North Carolina); quarterback Josh Freeman (Kansas State); tackle Eben Britton (Arizona); and defensive backs D.J. Moore (Vanderbilt) and Alphonso Smith (Wake Forest).

Apparently, Spielman (or another high-ranking Vikings official) did not participate as one of the five high-ranking league executives in Pro Football Weekly's survey of riskiness based on character concerns of first-round prospects. Harvin, who visited with the Vikings, ranked as the riskiest prospect.

Colorado's Ballenger to leave school

Colorado Buffaloes sophomore QB Matt Ballenger will leave the program after dropping to third on the QB depth chart this spring.

Ballenger will play football and/or basketball at another school.

Junior QB Cody Hawkins, son of coach Dan Hawkins, started last year and passed for 1892 yards. Sophomore Tyler Hansen is the only other QB on the roster now.

In high school, Ballenger was on a two-time state championship team in Idaho.

Donte Whitner arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct

Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner was arrested early this morning outside of House of Blues in Cleveland for aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting police.

Whitner, the Bills' first-round pick in 2006, was born in Cleveland and played for Ohio State.

Perhaps some smart-alec reminded him of his guarantee that the Bills would make the playoffs last year.

Leon Hall pleads not guilty to DUI charges

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Leon Hall was arrested Sunday on DUI charges where his blood alcohol concentration was nearly double the state's legal limit of .08.

Hall's attorney Ed Perry entered a not guilty plea for Hall. By entering a plea of not guilty, Hall can try to persuade the judge to reduce the sentence.

According to KYPost.com, the cruiser cam showed that Hall claimed to be rushing home because his wife was having a baby.

USC WR Patrick Turner to visit Titans, Cowboys

Per Ed Thompson of Scout.com, USC wide receiver Patrick Turner will visit with a pair of NFL teams next week. He is scheduled to visit with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday and with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday and Friday.

Turner is a big receiver (6'5" and 223 pounds) that has good hands. However, he is not very fast (4.70 40 time).

In his three seasons with SoCal, Turner recorded 138 receptions for 1752 yards and 17 touchdowns. Last season, Turner had a career-high 10 touchdowns.

Scout.com ranks Turner as the 20th best WR in this year's class and he won't be drafted until the later rounds.

Bucs' Donald Penn signs tender

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers restricted free agent tackle Donald Penn has signed his first-round tender with the Bucs. Penn will earn a guaranteed salary of $2.8 million in 2009.

If another team made an offer to Penn, which was not matched by the Bucs, the Bucs would have received first- and third-round picks as compensation. That limited Penn's ability to negotiate a deal with other teams.

However, both the Bucs and Penn's agent will continue to work on a long-term deal. Penn has started 26 games at left tackle for the Bucs.

Penn missed the voluntary mini-camp last week, but the team is using a new offense and blocking scheme under new offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski.

No NFL Network for Comcast subscribers soon

If you currently watch the NFL Network and Comcast provides you with your cable tv access, enjoy it while it lasts.

Per the Boston Globe, Comcast will no longer offer the network to its subscribers beginning next month.

Currently, NFL Network is part of Comcast's sports tier package, which carries an additional monthly charge of $7.95. However, the NFL Network wants to be part of the basic cable lineup to reach a wider audience.

When the Patriots were playing for regular-season perfection in 2007, their final game (a Saturday night primetime game scheduled to be aired only on NFL Network) caused a bit of an uproar. The game was eventually simulcasted on CBS and NBC as well.

Comcast says that the NFL Network is one of the most costly channels and doesn't want to raise overall prices (if included in its basic service), which would impact non-NFL Network viewers. However, NFL Network president and CEO Steve Bornstein essentially says that's bull shit.
"Comcast discriminates against networks like NFL Network because we are independent. Do you know why you get the Golf Channel and Versus on a basic level of cable service? Both are owned by Comcast. Do you wonder why the . . . MLB Network is offered to fans without an extra monthly fee? Once again, Comcast has an ownership interest."
Comcast has two million subscribers to its sports tier package out its roughly 40 million subscribers. My guess is that number is about to decline.

Are Bills leaning towards trading Jason Peters?

Per Allen Wilson of Buffalo News, the Buffalo Bills may be leaning towards trading Jason Peters instead of signing him to a contract extension.

Although Peters is under contract for two more seasons and the two sides are talking about an extension, they differ greatly on what the numbers of an extension should look like.

Peters is seeking a monster contract that pays him roughly $11.5 million per season. Although Peters is undoubtedly talented, many question his commitment.

Last year, Peters held out all the way until two days before training camp started. The Bills certainly don't want a repeat of last year.

According to Wilson, the Bills' most likely trade partner would be the Philadelphia Eagles, who have two first-round picks and the most of any team in the draft (12 overall picks). They also have plenty of space under the salary cap and lost Tra Thomas to the Jaguars via free agency.

The other possible trade partners cited by Wilson are Arizona, Green Bay, Detroit, Oakland, St. Louis, Seattle and Cincinnati, all of whom have a need at offensive tackle.

Maclin to visit Browns next week

Missouri receiver/returner Jeremy Maclin is going to visit the Cleveland Browns next week.

Maclin is generally rated as the second-best receiver in this year's draft class behind Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree, the two-time Biletnikoff Award winner.

Most project Maclin to not make it past the Raiders, who have the seventh overall pick, as Raiders' owner Al Davis covets speed. Crabtree was the most profilic WR at collegiate level over the past two seasons, but Maclin is faster (40 times of 4.48 at NFL Combine and 4.40 at his pro day).

At the NFL combine, the Browns and Giants had cursory talks involving Browns' receiver Braylon Edwards, who had a breakout year in 2007 and led the league in drops in 2008.

I expect the Browns to go with defense with their first-round pick (number five overall). However, if they draft a receiver, Crabtree, who is a bigger, more physical receiver, would make sense for an AFC North team that plays in cold weather.

But if the Browns draft Maclin (or Crabtree), Fox Sports points out that it could spell the end for Edwards in Cleveland.

NFL to expand number of prospects in house for draft

The NFL will increase the number of prospects invited to the NFL draft on April 25-26.

Normally, the NFL invites six prospects. This year, they will invite at least ten.

USC QB Mark Sanchez was invited to New York, but he has opted to spend draft day in California with his family.

Those who have accepted or are expected to attend are: USC LB Brian Cushing, Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, Kansas State QB Josh Freeman, Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry, Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree, Virginia OT Eugene Monroe, Mississippi OT Michael Oher, Texas DE Brian Orakpo and Baylor OT Jason Smith.

An official announcement of attendees will be made on Monday.

Next 2 Iron Bowls on Thanksgiving weekend

The Iron Bowl, which pits the Auburn Tigers against cross-state rival Alabama Crimson Tide, will be played on Friday of the last SEC regular-season weekend for the next two years.

So, that means that the Iron Bowl will be played the Friday after Thanksgiving for the next two years.
2009: November 27th - at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn
2010: November 26th - at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa
CBS, who has the contract to broadcast nationally-televised SEC games, will broadcast the game both years.

Steelers, Harrison close to new deal

Per Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Steelers and linebacker James Harrison are close to a new deal.

Harrison would have earned $1.2 million in 2009. However, the value of the new deal is believed to be worth around $45 million.

Last year, Harrison, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, set the team sack record last year with 16. He has made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons.

Still no progress on deal with Jason Peters

Could the Buffalo Bills reach an agreement on an extension with left tackle Jason Peters, who held out until two days before the start of last season? Could the Bills trade Peters before the start of the season? Could the Bills and Peters have a recurrence of last year's holdout?

Per Tim Graham of ESPN, the answer that question (any of them) is yes. Or, in other words, the Bills aren't any closer to signing (or trading) Peters.

Out of college, Peters was an undrafted tight end out of Arkansas. However, he's developed into one of the league's top tackles and would like to be paid as such even though he has two years remaining on his contract.

Peters, who's due to make $4 million in 2009, will earn less than the average salary of Bills' right tackle Langston Walker, who's contract averages $5 million per season.

Peters is seeking an eight-figure salary.

Last year, Peters incurred $600,000 in fines for missing mandatory practices so fines aren't a big deterrent for the big fella.

The most likely trade partner would be the Philadelphia Eagles, who have two first-round picks and lost left tackle Tra Thomas to Jacksonville via free agency.

The Bills are believed to be looking for a first- and third-round pick as trade compensation. However, an AFC GM wonders if he'll live up to the contract once a team (Bills, Eagles or otherwise) shows Peters the money.
"Once you give him the money, I'm not so sure he plays up to it," the GM said.
Until something is done, don't expect to see Peters around One Bills Drive any time soon.

Kedric Golston signs tender

Washington Redskins restricted free agent Kedric Golston has signed his tender offer and will earn a guaranteed salary of $1.54 million in 2009.

Golston, the Redskins sixth-round pick in 2006, started all 13 games he played last year and a total of 25 games in his three-year career.

In 2008, Golston had 28 tackles and two sacks.

David Garrard slims down in off-season

Mike Golic, ex-Eagle and current ESPN radio host and NutriSystem spokesman, and Jared from Subway have nothing on Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard, the Jaguars fourth-round pick in 2002.

Garrard has lost approximately 20 pounds this off-season and says he hasn't been this light since his junior year in high school.

While Garrard expects to be quicker on his feet, Jags' coach Jack Del Rio expects the impact of his commitment and dedication to carry over to the younger Jags' players as an example for them to follow.
"I just think it'll make me a little bit swifter, a little quicker, [so I'm] able to get out of the pocket a little easier and not get chased down by nose tackles," Garrard said.

"[Del Rio] said, 'This is going to help you out more than just being faster. You're going to be a better leader through it. You're going to have more confidence through it. You're going to be a better ballplayer because this just shows how hard you've worked to get where you are now, and it's just going to spread to the other guys,'" Garrard explained.
Last year, Garrard rushed for 322 yards (his career-best and second-best among NFL QBs), but he was also sacked 42 times in 2008. In 2007, he was sacked 21 times.

While Garrard is not likely to rush more, being lighter will help him on bootlegs, which the team uses often, and to help cut down on sacks.

Mora running Seahawks hard

New Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora is running an up-tempo practice. Mora, who runs a steep mountain many mornings, is running all over the practice field and expects his assistants to do the same while coaching their players.

Seahawks DE Patrick Kearney, who played under Mora in Atlanta, knew it was coming and warned his teammates.
“Be in great shape,” he’s said [to his teammates] with a chuckle while he’s been rehabilitating from shoulder surgery. “Be ready to run.”
Unlike Holmgren, who yelled when players messed up, Mora is an "attacking, pressure guy" all the time. But he says his intention is not to "kill" his players.
“The objective is not to come out here and kill them,” he said of this extra minicamp the league grants to teams with new head coaches. “Really, it’s to introduce to them what we want to do, how we want to do things, and hopefully what we want to be as a football team.

“I’m looking for tempo, speed, a level of execution. I think we have to start to establish our standards for those things. ... There’s a long way to go before we actually play a game. There’s a lot of messages that these guys are receiving.”
The Seahawks finished 4-12 in Mike Holmgren's last season as head coach. If they aren't more successful under Mora, they will at least be in better shape.

If Jets make offer to Austin, should Cowboys match?

The New York Jets are interested in Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin, who is a restricted free agent.

If the Jets make an offer to Austin, the Cowboys will have seven days to match the Jets' offer or the Jets will have to provide second-round compensation (overall pick 52) in this year's draft.

If Austin signs his tender with the Cowboys, he will earn $1.545 million guaranteed in 2009.

One of the factors in Jerry Jones' decision to part ways with Terrell Owens, who signed a one-year deal with Buffalo, is the development of Austin.

Per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys need to match almost any offer that the Jets make to Austin since he knows the system and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and QB Tony Romo know Austin.

Austin, an undrafted big (6'3") receiver, has shown glimpses of his ability to make plays throughout the season even though he only had 13 receptions for 278 yards in 12 games in 2008.

Gruden was offered Oregon offensive coordinator job

In February, Jon Gruden, who was fired after the season as Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, told the Orlando Sentinel that he wanted to learn more about spread offenses for possible use in the NFL.
"...I want to go to Oregon. I want my son to go to Oregon football camp, and I want to learn what the Oregon Ducks are doing on offense. ... I want to go in there and try to be a guest coach."
Instead when Oregon Ducks new head coach Chip Kelly visited with Gruden, Kelly offered Gruden the offensive coordinator position, which Gruden declined.
“He told me he wanted to learn the system,” Kelly said, “but that he just wanted to take a year off from coaching and spend time with his family. I was taking a shot. He’s a great coach and teacher. He’s still getting a paycheck from Tampa, so he can afford to take some time off.”
Oregon has named Mike Bellotti, who stepped down as head coach last month, as their temporary QBs coach. Bellotti will become Oregon's athletic director on July 1st.

Buckeyes to use 1-2 punch to replace Beanie Wells

The Ohio State Buckeyes won't replace departing RB Chris "Beanie" Wells, who gave up his senior season to declare himself eligible for the 2009 NFL draft, with just one RB.

Instead, they will likely use a two-headed running attack with Dan Herron and Brandon Saine.
"The thought I've had is that this may be the most comfortable situation — to really use two backs, like the pros are," Buckeyes running backs coach Dick Tressel said Thursday.
Herron, who often gets "you run hard for your size," is 5'10" and 198 pounds while Saine, the team's fastest player (when healthy), is 6'1" and 217 pounds.

The only two scholarship backs on the team for spring practice are Herron and Saine.
"With Beanie, it was, 'Let's line up in the I (formation) and feed me the ball for a while,'" [Head coach] Jim Tressel said. "Maybe our future might be less diverse than it was a year ago."
In the 2009 incoming class, the Buckeyes will have tailback Jaamal Berry (four stars by Rivals.com) join the backfield. In addition, fullbacks Carlos Hyde (four stars) and Adam Homan (three stars) are part of the incoming class.

Should Detroit inquire about Roscoe Parrish?

The Buffalo Bills are shopping receiver and return man Roscoe Parrish.

Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly thinks the Detroit Lions make the most sense as a suitor. Although the Lions have many holes to fill, the addition of Parrish would upgrade a few needs (third WR and punt/kick returner) with one roster spot.

Edholm believes that the Lions, who have five of the top 82 picks, would be able to acquire Parrish for the first pick of the sixth round (174 overall). That would leave the Lions with no picks in between No. 82 to No. 192.

Considering the number of needs the Lions have, I agree with Edholm that in cases were the Lions can upgrade in multiple spots with one player, it makes sense.

In 13 games, Parrish had 24 receptions for 232 yards and one touchdown in 2008. He led the NFL in punt return average (15.3 yards per return).

Bills add Seth McKinney to offensive line

The Buffalo Bills have signed Seth McKinney, who has spent the past two seasons in Cleveland.

Before playing for the Browns, McKinney spent five seasons with the Dolphins after being selected in the third round by Miami in the 2002 NFL draft.

McKinney, who has played center and guard, is expected to compete with Kirk Chambers to replace Derrick Dockery, who was signed by the Redskins after being released by the Bills.

Per Giants' owner, Plaxico ignored Giants

New Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler, who was traded by the Broncos, reached out to WR Plaxico Burress, who was released by the Giants, to gauge his interest in Da Bears.

One of the things that Cutler and Burress shared in common was that they ignored their team and, not surprisingly, neither team's owner liked it.
“[G.M.] Jerry Reese had attempted to contact him on a number of occasions and was not able to get a hold of him which, to be honest with you, irritated me quite a bit,” [Giants co-owner John] Mara said [yesterday on Sirius radio].

“[T]he case was postponed again so we felt like that would continue to leave us in limbo,” Mara said. “We were attempting to settle one of the two grievances out there with him, one of which was decided in his favor just the other day, and we were not having much success in those settlement discussions and we just felt like enough was enough and it’s time to just move on.”
Burress faces possible jail time pending his case, which was adjourned until mid-June, for gun possession charges and a possible suspension under the league's personal conduct policy. In other words, whether Burress ignored the team or not, it was likely that the Giants would have parted ways with the troubled receiver.

Leon Washington, Jets talking extension

New York Jets RB/KR Leon Washington, who was named first-team All-Pro this year, has one year remaining on his contract.

Per Rich Cimini of the Daily News, Washington is "hopeful" that the current contract negotiations between him and the Jets will result in an extension in the $4-million-per-year range.
Things are going,” Washington said. “The main thing that we have and they have is we both want to get something done. The Jets have been expressive of wanting to get something done. The Jets have done the right thing traditionally with Jerricho (Cotchery), Kerry Rhodes, with guys who have played well for this organization and have done the right thing.”
Unlike backfield mate Thomas Jones, who's unhappy with his contract, Washington is participating in the team's off-season workout program.

Leon Hall arrested for DUI

Apparently, the situation of Donte' Stallworth, receiver for the cross-state rival Browns, didn't teach Bengals cornerback Leon Hall anything. Stallworth, who is being charged with DUI manslaughter, hit and killed Mario Reyes while under the influence.

The Cincinnati Bengals, who have established a reputation for their players to get in trouble with the law, haven't had an arrest for nearly a year.

That is, until Sunday morning when Hall was arrested on DUI charges. Per Ohio police, Hall had a blood alcohol concentration of .149 (.08 is the Ohio legal limit).

He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Hall, who was the Bengals' first-round pick in 2007, was third on the team in tackles (75) and first in interceptions (3) in 2008.

3-game suspension coming for Lynch?

Per Michael Smith of ESPN.com, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is going to suspend Buffalo Bills RB Marshawn Lynch for three games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Goodell and Lynch met on March 17th.

Lynch has had back-to-back 1000-yard seasons in his first two years in the league, but he has been in trouble with the law in both off-seasons.

Last year, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident. This year, he was arrested on a gun charges that were eventually reduced to a misdemeanor, to which he pleaded guilty.

Although he is expected to appeal the decision per Smith, the suspension would cost him roughly $112,000. His base salary for 2009 is $635,000.

Jason Taylor talking to Dolphins

Per Tim Graham of ESPN, free agent defensive end Jason Taylor admits that he has had some early talks with the Miami Dolphins, where he spent 11 of his 12 seasons.
"We talked," Taylor said. "I'm not going to get into what we talked about and the details of it, but they know how I feel and what I'd like to do. I know how they feel and what they'd like to do, what they're looking for. But we talked, and I'll leave it at that."
Taylor, who was the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, says that he was the Dolphins "biggest fan" last year.
"I'll always be a Dolphin," Taylor said. "There was no bigger fan last year than me. I'm leaving the field from Redskins games and running to see what the Dolphins are doing and checking my phone throughout the day. Those guys on that team will tell you: I was in contact the whole time."
The Redskins, who acquired Taylor last year, released him this off-season as he was unwilling to participate in 75 percent of the team's off-season workout program.

He left $8.5 million on the table in Washington. However, he says that he won't play for the league minimum either.

Re-signing Taylor would be a good PR move by the Dolphins, but his best days are behind him as a 34-year-old player.

Pace wants Bears to go after Holt

Last week, the Chicago Bears signed tackle Orlando Pace, who had spent his entire career with the St. Louis Rams. Now the new Bear wants his new team to bring in one of his former Ram teammates.

To illustrate the Bears' glaring weakness at receiver, new Bears QB Jay Cutler called Plaxico Burress, the same one facing the possibility of prison and/or league suspension on gun charges, to gauge his level of interest in joining the Bears.

However, Pace would like help to come from Torry Holt.
"I spoke to Torry," Pace said. "It's funny he just probably at my house a few days before I even came here. I think he's just out searching. I'm probably recruiting him in Chicago here. And hopefully it works out."
Bears coach Lovie Smith, who was defensive coordinator for the Rams before joining the Bears, didn't rule out the possibility.
"I do have a relationship with Torry Holt," Smith said. "He's a great player, great guy. He's available right now. Torry's in the (free agency) pool like a lot of other receivers. We evaluate everybody that's available, and Torry's one of them."
Holt would help upgrade the Bears' receiving corps. But with or without Holt, the Bears would still have one of the weakest receiving corps in the league.

Kiffin kicks Morley off team

Tennessee Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin has dismissed free safety Demetrice Morley from the team.
"Demetrice won't be part of our team anymore," Kiffin told reporters. "Like we have said from the beginning, this isn't easy. It's very demanding for guys to stay here and go through everything we do, to hold to our standards on and off the field, to be part of our culture. Demetrice could not do that and we wish him the best of luck."
Morley, who also missed the entire 2007 season, started nine games last season and becomes the second player to leave the school in the past week.

Last week, junior running back Lennon Creer quit the team.

Deuce McAllister filed for bankruptcy protection

The New Orleans Saints cut RB Deuce McAllister in the middle of February.

After having arthroscopic knee surgery in the off-season (and reconstructive surgery in 2007), McAllister is rehabbing at Duke University and hopes to find a new employer before the start of training camp.

However, the road has become a little bumpier.

McAllister, who owns two Nissan dealerships in Jackson (MS), filed for bankruptcy protection in March. Nissan says that McAllister owes $7 million to them. Today Nissan took possession of about 20 Nissans that were on McAllister's lot.
"Nissan financing has every right to protect the vehicles," McAllister said. "What they choose to do with them is their business. There's obviously a lot more to the story, but we'll see how this shakes out."

"I'm having to focus a little more time on this than I particularly want to," McAllister said of his dealership. "At some point, I have to step away from this and concentrate on football."
McAllister is the Saints' all-time leader in rushing yards (6096) and rushing touchdowns (49).

Elway calls it quits

Of course, Hall of Fame QB John Elway retired years ago. 1998 to be exact.

Now, John's son Jack is calling it quits too.

Jack Elway was a redshirt freshman quarterback at Arizona State competing with four other quarterbacks for the starting gig created by the departure of Rudy Carpenter.
"He's just tired of football and wants to do something else with his life," ASU coach Dennis Erickson said Monday. "He made a decision, and we all understand it. He would have played here eventually."
Elway, who was all-Colorado at Cherry Creek High School, did not participate at ASU's scrimmage on Saturday.
"You definitely have to know a lot more," Jack told The [Denver] Post at the start of preseason drills. "Mentally, there's a lot more studying, a lot more." Plus, the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder said, "there's a lot bigger people here and you have to get used to the speed of the game. It's different trying to pick it up. But it's coming."
I can't imagine the pressure to follow in his legendary father's footsteps. Although Elway is quitting football, he will stay in school.

Marcus Stroud gets 2-year extension

The Buffalo Bills and defensive tackle Marcus Stroud agreed to a two-year extension.

Stroud had two years remaining on his contract and will now be under contract with the Bills until 2012. The total value of the four years now remaining on his contract is $29 million ($12 million guaranteed).
"This has turned out to be a really positive thing for Marcus," [Stroud's agent Drew] Rosenhaus said. "It's been a blessing. He's one of leaders of the team. And even with the two years left on his contract, he was rewarded with a contract that's consistent with the best defensive tackles in the league."
In his first season with the Bills, Stroud finished with 45 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2008.

Stroud, selected by the Jaguars in the first round in 2001, made the Pro Bowl three times (2003-2005) with the Jags.

Jones-Drew not in JAX for start of workouts

The Jacksonville Jaguars started their off-season (voluntary) workout program yesterday. The team's highest profile (and most under-paid) player was a no-show.

At the end of the season, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio talked about his expectations for the Jaguars' conditioning program.
"Everybody who wants to be a Jaguar will be in Jacksonville working out with the team," Del Rio said in a Dec. 30 news conference.
Unless a new deal is reached, Jones-Drew, who is not at the team's workouts, will earn the league minimum of $535,000 in 2009.

In late-February, the Jaguars offered Jones-Drew a deal in the $8-million-per-season range. Although the two sides we're close in the guaranteed portion of the contract ($20 million), they weren't close on the amount of the total offer.
"This is the team, and if you're not here, you're against us," [Jags strength and conditioning coach Luke] Richesson said when asked about the importance of attending the club's program. "That's how it's got to be viewed. If you're on this team, you need to be here training."
In that case, Jones-Drew is "against us."

Bengals sign Tank Johnson

With several teams changing to a character-first philosophy, the Cincinnati Bengals are up to their old tricks.

The Bengals have signed free-agent Tank Johnson to a deal believed to be for the league minimum.
"Tank had a good meeting with the Bengals last Thursday and is excited to play for Marvin Lewis, (defensive coordinator) Mike Zimmer and (defensive line coach) Jay Hayes," Johnson's agent, Jerrold Colton, said this afternoon.
Johnson, who was suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for eight games in 2007 for a gun violation, played 24 games over the past two seasons with the Cowboys. He has struggled in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme. However, the Bengals use a 4-3 defense.

He also played in a 4-3 defense with the Bears, who drafted him in the second-round in 2004.

The Bengals finished 12th in the NFL in total yards (325.5) allowed per game. However, they ranked only 21st in rushing defense (120.1 ypg).

Chiefs win grievance against Larry Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs won their grievance hearing against RB Larry Johnson. By winning, the Chiefs won't have to pay Johnson $3.75 million in guaranteed money in 2009 and 2010.
“We disagree with that portion of the ruling,’’ said Richard Berthelesen, the general counsel for the NFL Players Association. “But we have not yet decided as to what we’re going to do by way of appeal.’’
Johnson has 30 days to file an appeal.

However, the arbitrator also ruled that Johnson may keep one quarter of the 2008 portion of his signing bonus ($521,000).

Johnson received two years of probation for two separate nightclub incidents. During the season, he was suspended by the NFL for a game for his actions.

With a new GM (Scott Pioli) and head coach (Todd Haley) in control, Johnson, who has said that he wants out of KC, will likely be released now that the Chiefs won't have to pay him if they cut him.

If LJ plays for the Chiefs in 2009, however, he will receive his salary of $4.55 million.

Bucs sign Winslow to 6-year extension

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed TE Kellen Winslow Jr. to a six-year extension that is worth $36.1 million and includes $20.1 million in guaranteed money.

The deal, which is the largest ever for a tight end, could reach $42.1 million if Winslow achieves the incentives built into the contract.

Winslow, the Browns first-round pick in 2004, has had trouble staying healthy during his five-year career. In five seasons, he has played 44 games.

In his two full seasons (2006 and 2007), Winslow put up a combined 171 receptions for 1981 yards and eight touchdowns.

Whether or not he's worth this much money depends on whether the Bucs get the '06-'07 Winslow or not.

Ravens re-sign Rolle

A month ago, Baltimore Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle asked to be released and said that he didn't "want to play in Baltimore anymore because I feel I'm not wanted."

A month later, Rolle had a change of heart as the Ravens re-signed Rolle to a four-year contract.
"What we experienced with Samari two weeks ago ... when he came in and sat down and talked with us and expressed some things to us, and we were able to express some things back to him ... it broke a lot of barriers," Newsome said.
The Ravens have also signed cornerbacks Dominique Foxworth and Chris Carr this off-season.

Robinson, Ryans not at Texans voluntary workouts

The Houston Texans began their off-season workout program today without LB DeMeco Ryans and CB Dunta Robinson. Both players are unhappy with their contract situations.

Robinson, who is upset about being franchised, hasn't yet signed his tender for $9.957 million. Ryans is under contract and will earn $1.39 million this year.

The team has several voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) that run from mid-May to early-June.

However, they have their mandatory mini-camp from June 15th to 17th.

If Ryans doesn't show for the mandatory mini-camp, he will be fined. If Robinson doesn't sign his tender (or work out a long-term deal with the team) before then, he wouldn't be fined since technically he wouldn't be under contract.
“Obviously, I wish both players were going to be here, but I understand their situations,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “We need them to win, and at some point, we’ll have them back. And I expect both of them to play to the Pro Bowl level they’re capable of.”
Ryans led the team in tackles (112) in 2008. In 11 games, Robinson had 38 tackles and two interceptions.

Plaxico Burress won $1 million

Plaxico Burress has finally received some good news.

The former Giant won his arbitration case against his former team, who withheld the final $1 million portion of his signing bonus. The Giants argued that Plaxico's behavior and how his contract was structured warranted that the remainder of the bonus be forfeited.

However, per NFLPA General Counsel Richard Berthelsen, via the New York Daily News, Special Master (arbitrator) Stephen Burbank used a specific clause within the Collective Bargaining Agreement in his decision.
"...money could be forfeited 'if a player willfully takes action that has the effect of substantially undermining his ability to fully participate and contribute in either preseason training camp or the regular season.'"
However, the Special Master deemed that Burress didn't "willfully" take action to undermine his ability to participate.
"If I refuse to go to training camp because I want a new contract, there's a a causal connection between my actions and preventing the team from having my services," Berthelsen said. "But if I go out and get in a car that needs new brakes and I get hurt in an accident, am I intending to deprive the team of my services?

"The Special Master said 'No.'"
Berthelsen's analogy explains Plaxico's F-bomb-loaded encounter with police recently where he drove like "he was going to kill somebody."

Matt Hasselbeck to practice tomorrow

Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck, who missed nine games in 2008 with a bulging disk, will participate in practice tomorrow when the team begins their voluntary mini-camp.

It will be the first mini-camp under new head coach Jim Mora.

In the seven games that Hasselbeck played in 2008, he finished with a QB rating of 57.8, the lowest of his career. He threw for 173.7 yards per game, which was his lowest average since his first season in Seattle (2001). Hasselbeck threw twice as many interceptions (10) as he threw touchdowns (5).

Several mock drafts have the Seahawks, who select fourth overall in this year's draft, taking USC QB Mark Sanchez.

Karlos Dansby fires his agent

Per Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Cardinals ILB Karlos Dansby has fired his agent Kirk Wood, who has represented Dansby since he left Auburn.

Somers speculates that Dansby will switch to Eugene Parker, the agent for teammate Adrian Wilson.

Dansby, who was designated with the franchise tag the past two seasons, is seeking a long-term deal and talks between Wood and Cardinals GM Rod Graves were progressing well. In fact, per Somers' sources, a deal could have been completed this week.

It is strange timing to fire an agent this close to reaching a deal.

Dansby led the Cardinals in tackles (119) in 2008. He also had four sacks and two interceptions.

Jeff Garcia signs with Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders signed free-agent QB Jeff Garcia, who grew up in the Bay Area and as a Raiders' fan, to a one-year contract.
"I feel like I still have the energy and enthusiasm to continue for another year or two, but I know I'm getting close ," Garcia said. "It's just one of those things where, the older I get, and the more my family is growing and all of those things, off the field, it starts to make me really think about, seriously, when that day is going to come. I know it's coming close, but I know that it's not quite ready to end after (the 2008) season."
He will be a back-up and mentor to JaMarcus Russell, the top overall pick in 2007.

Signing Garcia, who made the Pro Bowl in 2007, is a good move for the Raiders even though he is 39 years old. I'm surprised more teams weren't interested in him, but he is a more than capable back-up if Russell gets hurt and/or plays poorly.

Garcia posted the ninth best QB rating (90.2) in 2008. He threw for 2712 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in 12 games in 2008.

Reggie Bush thinks he's now "the man"

New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush was in Fort Worth for the Nascar race at Texas Speedway today.

When asked about the team's move to release Deuce McAllister, their all-time leading rusher, Bush took it as his cue that they are looking for him to step up: "they're looking for me to be the guy back there."

Bush finished third on the Saints in rushing (404 yards) last year behind Pierre Thomas (625) and McAllister (418).

With or without McAllister, Bush isn't likely to become the team's workhorse. At the most, I would expect the Saints to split carries between Thomas and Bush.

Ocho Cinco could miss out on $250k bonus

Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Ocho Cinco, who previously said he'd be at all off-season workouts, has been a no-show for the first week of the team's voluntary off-season workout program.

Per James Walker of ESPN.com, Ocho Cinco's absence may cost him $250,000 by not reaching a contract incentive he would receive for attending the workout program.

Despite a rumor that originated on Bleacher Report, it was confirmed by Joe Reedy of The Cincinnati Enquirer that Ocho Cinco is not being traded to Oakland.

Ocho Cinco isn't worth the drama. The Bengals have to be kicking themselves for not accepting the rumored trade proposal involving two first-rounders from Washington last year. But the Bengals should give him a one-way ticket out of Cincinnati and put the distractions he creates behind them.

Rams' Atogwe goes about it the right way

Many NFL players dislike being designated with the franchise tag, which pays the player the average of the top 5 salaries for their position.

Per Bill Coats of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rams safety Oshiomogho "O.J." Atogwe is not one of them.

Technically, Atogwe won't be under contract until he signs his tender offer, which would pay him a guaranteed salary of $6.34 million for 2009.

Normally players who haven't signed their tender don't show for off-season activities. Especially not for voluntary activities. However, Atogwe is different.
"I think it's a blessing I get another chance to come out here and play," Atogwe said Friday. "To be thought of as one of the top five at my position is an honor. So, I relish the designation."

"I feel like I'm obligated to be here for my teammates and for my coaches," Atogwe explained. "If I'm going to be a part of this team, I'm going to be a part of this team from the beginning to the end."
The Rams would still like to negotiate a long-term deal with Atogwe. It's refreshing to see a player who gets it and appreciates how lucky he is. Atogwe, the Rams third-round pick in 2005, has 13 interceptions over the past two seasons.

Dunta Robinson, who was franchised by the Texans, can learn something from Mr. Atogwe.

Ephraim Salaam to visit Lions

Per Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, Houston guard Chester Pitts says that his former teammate Ephraim Salaam will visit the Detroit Lions. Pitts was interviewed by Marvez on Sirius NFL Radio yesterday.

Salaam is an 11-year veteran and has started 129 games in his career. However, last season he backed up rookie Duane Brown in Houston.

According to Pitts, Salaam has some reservations about visiting with the Lions since they are considering drafting an offensive tackle with the first overall pick. If they do, Salaam would be a back-up for the Lions as well.

Should Chris Johnson choose Nashville over Orlando?

Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson is not participating in the team's voluntary off-season workout program. Instead, Johnson has decided to stay in Orlando and work out on his own.

David Climer of The Tennessean argues that Johnson "dropped the ball" since he "should be" in Tennessee.

Climer says that even though Titans coach Jeff Fisher says he's o.k. with Johnson working out separately, Climer doesn't buy it.

Of course, most coaches want their players to participate in the "voluntary" workouts. And there isn't much they can do about players' attendance with the exception of putting incentives in player contracts for participation in off-season workouts.

Johnson, who called the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting "bogus," had 1488 combined rushing and receiving yards and scored 10 touchdowns in his rookie campaign.

Burress used F bombs when pulled over

Plaxico Burress, who was recently released by the New York Giants, should be on his best behavior while his attorney Benjamin Brafmin attempts to negotiate a plea deal with the NYC D.A.'s office. Having his case adjourned to mid-June, Burress is facing a gun-possession charge that carries a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years and a maximum sentence of 15 years.

However, it's Plaxico's lack of good judgment that often gets him in trouble with either the law, the NFL or his team (when he's on one).

Per James Fanelli of the New York Post, Burress had a profanity-laden run-in with an officer in Florida after a traffic stop. The officer said that he pulled over Burress, because he was driving like "he was going to kill somebody."
"F- - - you! You're going to be in a lot of trouble. I know the sheriff personally," the receiver raged at Broward County Deputy Sheriff Donald Harris during the March 18 traffic stop, police said.
Not only did Burress make the threat to the deputy sherriff, he apparently lied about having the connection as the sheriff says that he "never met" Burress.

On March 1st, Burress was pulled over as well and received four motor-vehicle violations then.

Burress is unlikely to avoid jail time and/or a league suspension. Although I'm not sure how this affects his potential plea deal, I wouldn't be surprised if it leads to less leniency by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell when determining the duration of his future suspension.

Garcia in black and silver in 2009?

Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Oakland Raiders are interested in free-agent QB Jeff Garcia although it is not known if an offer has been made.

There has been little interest in the 39-year-old QB this off-season. However, Oakland would seem to be one of the last places I would expect Garcia to end up.

Garcia believes he should be a starter somewhere. And he would be an upgrade over the current starting quarterback in some places with Oakland possibly being one of those situations.

It is unlikely, however, that Raiders owner Al Davis believes that Garcia would have the opportunity to win the starting job away from the incumbent JaMarcus Russell, the first overall pick in 2007.

Perhaps Garcia is coming to the reality that the less-than-lukewarm interest he's received this off-season means he should go wherever he's wanted whether that means he starts or doesn't.

To me, the situation that would make the most sense would be Minnesota. The Vikings are a QB away from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender considering their running game and defense. However, the Vikings seem to be content with Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson.

Last year, Garcia had a QB rating of 90.2 and threw for 2712 yards in 12 games with the Bucs. He threw twice as many touchdowns (12) as he threw interceptions (6).

Byron Leftwich talking to Redskins about contract

Free-agent QB Byron Leftwich, who was the back-up in Pittsburgh last year, met with the Washington Redskins on Friday.

Per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the two sides are in contract talks.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin would like to re-sign both free-agent back-up QBs from 2008 - Leftwich and Charlie Batch.

Leftwich threw passes in five separate games and finished with a QB rating of 104.3 in 2008. He threw for 303 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Redskins were actively pursuing Jay Cutler, who Denver traded to the Chicago Bears.

It's no secret that Leftwich wants the opportunity to become a starting QB again. If the 'Skins sign him, he may get his opportunity via an open QB competition this summer.

Cato June to join Houston Texans

The Houston Texans and linebacker Cato June have agreed to terms on a one-year contract. June's contract is worth $1.5 million but could reach $2 million.

In addition to June, the Texans agreed to terms with MLB Buster Davis. June is expected to compete with Xavier Adibi for the starting job as the weak-side linebacker.

June played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the past two seasons before being released.

In his last season with the Colts (2006), June recorded 142 tackles, one sack and had three interceptions. In 2007 and 2008 with the Bucs, June had 141 tackles, no sacks and two interceptions in the two seasons.

Rams sign Kyle Boller as Bulger's back-up

The St. Louis Rams have agreed to terms with QB Kyle Boller, who spent 2008 on Injured Reserve with the Baltimore Ravens.
"We are happy to add Kyle to our roster," said Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo. "We feel that he will be a valuable addition to our team."
The Rams were negotiating with Gus Frerotte, who was released by the Minnesota Vikings in February. However, talks with Frerotte broke down.

In either case, Frerotte or Boller would have served as back-up to Marc Bulger. However, Boller is ten years younger than Frerotte.

For his career, Boller, the Ravens' first-round pick in 2003, has completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 7846 yards. He has thrown 45 touchdowns and 44 interceptions.

Kellen Winslow's father-in-law found

Enrique Guzman, Kellen Winslow's father-in-law, was missing since Wednesday. He was found around 9 a.m. this morning at the Calexico border crossing.
"It is our understanding that Mr. Guzman was returning to the United States from Mexico early this morning. While at the border crossing, he was displaying symptoms of confusion," Martinez said in a statement. "A computer check by United States Customs officials revealed that Mr. Guzman [and his vehicle] were listed as missing."
Fortunately, Guzman was found and is safe and sound. However, it sounds like it's time to take the keys away.

Dawkins to give Leone Eagles-Broncos tickets

Fired Philadelphia Eagles part-time employee (and passionate fan) Dan Leone will be at Lincoln Field when the Denver Broncos come to Philadelphia to play the Eagles. However, Leone won't be working the game.

Instead, Broncos newly-signed safety Brian Dawkins will provide Leone with tickets to the game.

When the Eagles didn't re-sign Dawkins, Leone showed his frustration through his status on his Facebook page. He wrote: "Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver ... Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"

That Facebook post, which he deleted and admitted was a mistake, cost Leone his job.
"I thought it'd be a good gesture,'' Dawkins said, according to the Daily News. "Had I not ... signed with Denver, that guy would still have his job."
In a league where so many players don't seem to get it, Dawkins consistently shows he does. Classy move.

Purdue's Justin Siller dismissed for '09-'10 academic year

Purdue sophomore quarterback Justin Siller has been dismissed by the university and won't be eligible to return until the 2010-2011 academic year.
"It's a disappointing conclusion and, as a football team, we feel for Justin and his family," head coach Danny Hope said in a prepared statement. "Justin made a mistake -- a bad decision -- and deserved to be punished. Our hope was that he would not be punished to the extent he has been. Now it is our responsibility to accept the decision and move forward. Justin is a fine young man, and we wish him nothing but the best."
Hope wouldn't specify what Siller did to receive a full-year dismissal from the university.

Siller, who started three games in 2008, was expected to compete with senior Joey Elliott as starting QB.

Elliott, who has 300 career passing yards, will now be the team's starter and the primary back-up to Elliott will be redshirt freshman Caleb TerBush.

Kellen Winslow's father-in-law missing

Enrique Guzman, father-in-law of Bucs' TE Kellen Winslow Jr., has been missing since Wednesday.

Guzman suffers from Alzheimer's disease and was last seen at a gas station in Anaheim, CA.

Click here to see a picture of Guzman and for police contact information.

Todd Marinovich literally a bust

Todd Marinovich is a "bust" in the true sense of the word.

While quarterback at USC, Marinovich was arrested on drug charges for the first time in 1991. Nearly two decades later, Marinovich was arrested again on charges related to drugs.

Friday he was arrested for failing to show up a drug rehabilitation progress review.

Marinovich, who was the Raiders first-round pick in 1991, has been arrested nine prior times.

Not only does Marinovich have more career interceptions (9) than he has touchdowns (8), but he has more arrests too.

Winslow says Edwards would love to be a Giant

Yesterday the New York Giants released wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who faces a possible jail sentence on gun possession charges and a league suspension under the personal conduct policy.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Kellen Winslow Jr., who was traded by the Browns this off-season, says that his former teammate Braylon Edwards would like to play for the NY Giants.
“For some reason I don’t (think he’ll play for the Browns in 2009),” Winslow said. “I know Braylon would love to go to New York. The Giants would fit him to the ‘T’ and he would have so much fun up there. I know he loves Cleveland but New York would be a great fit for him.”
The Giants and Browns had discussions at the NFL scouting combine (February) about Edwards. Giants were believed to have offered their second- and fifth-round picks acquired in the Jeremy Shockey trade last year to the Browns in addition to their choice of Mario Manningham or Domenik Hixon when the talks died down.

Edwards, who Winslow calls a "city guy," had a disappointing season in 2008 after having a break-out year in 2007.

In 2007, Edwards had 80 receptions for 1289 yards and 16 touchdowns. In 2008, he had 55 receptions for 873 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Vick's bankruptcy plan is rejected

The judge in the Michael Vick bankruptcy case rejected Vick's proposal, but he is giving Vick one more opportunity to put together a viable plan.
“I am going to give you one more chance to come up with a workable reorganization plan, but that is your last chance,” [Judge Frank] Santoro told Vick. “I think it would be important for you to make the best of it.”
Santoro ordered a hearing for Vick's bankruptcy plan on April 28th.

Vick, who is currently working for $.12/hour as a janitor in prison on the 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift, says that prison has allowed him to reflect on his life and the decisions he has made and he vows to be different.
“I committed a heinous act,” Vick said. “It was very irresponsible. I didn’t do all the right things at that point in my life. What I did was wrong. When you know better, you are supposed to do better.”

“I can’t live life like the old Mike Vick,” he said. “I was very immature. I was naïve to a lot of things.”
Vick is scheduled to be released to home confinement on May 21st.

Could Browns still trade Quinn to Denver?

Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer "can't believe" that the Browns haven't already traded QB Brady Quinn, who the Browns took 22nd overall in 2007, to the Denver Broncos for the 18th overall pick in the NFL draft.

The Broncos acquired the 18th overall pick from the Bears along with the Bears' third-round pick in 2009, first-round pick in 2010 and Kyle Orton. The Broncos sent Jay Cutler and their fifth-round pick to Chicago.

Quinn, who started three games in 2008, broke his index finger in his second start. He played much better in the first game (23-35, 239 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs and 104.3 QB rating) than he did in the other two games with a broken finger.

Browns coach Eric Mangini has said that there will be a quarterback competition between Quinn and Derek Anderson during training camp.

However, Grossi argues that if the Browns can't decide on a starter now that they likely won't be able to decide on a starter after camp. He goes on to call this a potential "best bailout of their quarterback quandary."

Fortunately for the Browns, Grossi's not their general manager.

Rodney Harrison to decide by 6/1

Safety Rodney Harrison hasn't decided whether he's going to retire or pursue a career as an NFL analyst on television.
“I know there’s teams that have interest,” he said, “but I haven’t visited with anyone. As I said, I haven’t decided what I’m going to do, that’s the truth. I’ll see what I want to do in the next couple of months. By June 1, I will have made my decision, definitely.”
In the post-season, Harrison did analysis for NFL Network and NBC Sports.

Harrison played for 15 years including the last six with the Patriots. However, he's only played 31 games in the past four seasons.

In his career, Harrison has 1242 tackles, 30.5 sacks and 34 interceptions.

Adalius Thomas upset about possible longer season

The NFL season currently consists of 16 regular-season games and four pre-season games. At the NFL owner's meetings last week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that he would like to increase the number of regular-season games and decrease the number of pre-season games.

One NFL player is expressing his opposition to the idea Goodell will likely propose at next month's spring meetings.

New England Patriots LB Adalius Thomas says that NFL players deserve more money if the length of the regular season expands.
"You're telling me that Tom Brady is going to play a regular-season game that would have been a preseason game for $1,200," said Thomas. "You got four preseason games that you're paying people, and you got a set salary from somebody that would make their normal salary. If you made $5 million that year, you're almost making a $1 million a month based off the football season, so instead of getting paid your regular check you're going to get paid [$1,225], and you're telling me I'm getting paid. ...

"You're telling me you're going to add a week, but you'll pay me like preseason; you're going to just stretch the payments over 18 weeks," said Thomas. "No, we're not doing that. You can mark me down on the injured list for two weeks. You can put that in your books. You've done lost your mind."
Of all sports, I believe NFL players are the least overpaid. Their bodies take an enormous toll and they have a relatively low proportion of guaranteed pay compared to other sports.

But with today's unemployment report showing 13 million out of work, it's hard to feel sympathy for the plight of Thomas and other players having their "$1 million a month" diluted by one or two extra games.

Titans to add QB Ramsey

Per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, the Titans have agreed to terms with QB Patrick Ramsey today.

According to Wyatt, Ramsey, a first-round pick by the Redskins in 2002, is expected to compete with Vince Young, a first-round pick by the Titans in 2006, to back up Kerry Collins.

Chris Simms, who was a back-up for the Titans last year, left via free agency and signed with the Broncos. With Jay Cutler being traded to the Bears for Kyle Orton and draft picks, Simms will compete with Orton for an opportunity to start in Denver.

For the past two seasons, Ramsey was a back-up in Denver and appeared in only three games. Over his career, however, Ramsey has started 24 games for the Redskins and Jets.

Young's expected "competition" with Ramsey for back-up is just another reminder of how far Young has fallen since winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in his rookie season.

Cadillac encouraged by rehab progress

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Carnell "Cadillac" Williams has gone through ups and downs in his four-year career. To be precise, he started up and has since been down.

The back that rushed for nearly 1200 yards in his rookie campaign (2005) is rehabbing his second major knee injury, which occurred on December 28th.

Unlike the first time, he's doing things (i.e., running and limited cutting) three months after this injury that he wasn't doing until "seven, eight months" after the first injury in 2007.
"It's a lot different," he added. "(Last) time, at three months, I was basically still on crutches."
Williams is running already largely due to the level of severity of this injury (detached patellar tendon) versus the first injury (ruptured patellar tendon).

Williams has hopes of heading into training camp completely healthy. The Bucs also have Earnest Graham and Derrick Ward, who was signed in the off-season. It will be interested to see how the mix of carries will be split if all are healthy.

Giants release Plaxico Burress

The New York Giants released troubled wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

Burress, who shot himself in the leg at a nightclub last year, faces a prison term and/or a league suspension. On March 31st, Burress had his request for an adjournment granted, which postpones his case to mid-June.

His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, is attempting to reach an agreement on a plea deal. Brafman, who hasn't spoken to Burress since his release today, e-mailed Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.
"I think the Giants made a huge mistake, speaking as both his lawyer and a Giants fan," Brafman wrote via e-mail.
The Giants had become frustrated with Burress even before he shot himself. Burress was suspended for the Giants' week 5 game against the Seahawks and he was fined $45,000 for his actions in week 7.

With Burress' legal and league issues, the likelihood that Burress would have seen the field in 2009 was small.

As far as possible replacements, the Giants have had some preliminary discussions with the Browns about Braylon Edwards.

Or the Giants could inquire about the Cardinals' disgruntled receiver Anquan Boldin, who is represented by Drew Rosenhaus. However, Rosenhaus, who also represents Burress, pissed off the Giants when he e-mailed other teams in January saying Burress was available for a trade.

The top free agent WR available is Torry Holt and there will be several solid wide receivers available when the Giants pick with the 29th overall pick.

Channing Crowder speaks for Jason Taylor

Miami Dolphins LB Channing Crowder says that Jason Taylor wants to play for Miami (again).
"I went fishing with J.T. two weeks ago; he wants to be a Dolphin," Crowder said.
The Redskins, who traded for him last off-season, released Taylor this off-season citing his unwillingness to commit to the off-season workout program. Taylor preferred to stay in Miami to be with his family.
"I would love to have J.T. back," Crowder said. "It would add a whole new dimension to a defense that, in spurts, looked really good last year. He's one of my closest friends. He kind of brought me up in the league when I was a young guy, so I love him to death."
The Dolphins received the Redskins second-round pick this year and their sixth-round pick next year as compensation for Taylor last year.

Taylor, who was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, has 120.5 career sacks in 12-year career.

Boldin "would love to" play in Florida

Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin, who has two years remaining on his four-year contract, was a guest on ESPN's 760 AM in Miami.

Boldin is unsure whether he'll be back in Arizona in 2009.
Honestly, I don’t know,” Boldin said. “It’s at a point right now where there’s not any discussion between myself and the team.”
When speaking to 560-AM in Miami last September, Boldin's agent Drew Rosenhaus called it a "shame" that his client was wearing a Cardinals jersey in the Arizona-Miami game instead of a Dolphins jersey.

Today, Boldin was asked about his thoughts on playing in Florida.
“As far as playing in my home state, I would love to,” Boldin said. “I’m a Florida guy and always will be a Florida guy at heart. If it happens, I’ll definitely be grateful.”
Boldin is from Pahokee, FL and went to Florida State.

Chike Okeafor will be back with Cardinals

Per Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, the rumors and speculation surrounding the possibility of a release of or pay cut for Cardinals LB Chike Okeafor are just that. Rumors.

Okeafor, who is in the final year of his contract, will earn $4.5 million for the Cardinals in 2009.

Three of the top four Cardinals' OLBs are over 30 years old. Okeafor, who is the starter on the strong side, is 33 and Travis Laboy, who starts on the weak side, is 28. Their back-ups, Clark Haggans and Bertrand Berry, are 32 and 34 years old, respectively.

Somers expects the Cardinals to draft an outside linebacker in one of the first three rounds of this year's draft.

Bears to sign Orlando Pace?

Per Michael Smith of ESPN, the Bears and left tackle Orlando Pace have agreed to terms on a contract. Terms have not been disclosed.

The Bears will likely start Pace at left tackle and move Chris Williams, the Bears' first-round pick in 2008, to right tackle.

Pace is a seven-time Pro Bowler, but he has struggled with injuries the past couple of years.

Titans ask NFL to look into tampering by 'Skins

By submitting newspaper and radio audio files to the NFL, the Tennessee Titans are asking that the NFL look into tampering by the Washington Redskins, who signed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth about 5 hours into free agency.

However, the $100 million man says he doesn't think that the Redskins tampered.
"All I know is the Redskins called my agent at 11:04 p.m. Nashville time and they started negotiating then,'' Haynesworth said last month. "They weren't anywhere close in the first couple of hours and then they got serious. Chad worked the deal then and it worked out.''
The NFL doesn't have any official comment on the matter.
"There are issues of tampering that come up from time to time and if we need to take some action then of course we announce that," [NFL Senior VP Greg] Aiello said. "Until then we don't comment on it.''
Whether the Redskins tampered or not, there was no way that the Titans were going to be able to come close to the money that was being thrown at Haynesworth, who was the Titans first-round pick in 2002.

But considering how much the Redskins gave up to get Haynesworth, the real question is was he worth the cost.

Vick to work construction for $10 per hour

Imprisoned and suspended Falcons QB Michael Vick has a construction job lined up with W.M. Jordan Co., a Newport News (VA) based construction company.
"I believe all of us make mistakes, and once you've fulfilled your commitment and paid the price, you should be given a second chance," [W.M. Jordan's John Robert] Lawson said in a telephone interview. "He's not a bad person. He made some bad choices."
The former number one overall draft pick (2001) will work 40 hours per week and earn $10 per hour. Lawson and Vick have known each other for the past 10 years due to some charity work.
"You will hear from Mr. Vick his future intentions, how he's going to change the way he lives his life," his lawyer, Michael Blumenthal, told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank J. Santoro.
Vick is expected to get out of prison next month and spend the remaining two months of his sentence under home confinement.

The bankruptcy plan calls for Vick to retain the first $750,000 he earns each year over the next five years. Creditors would receive a percentage over that on a sliding scale.

His agent Joel Segal, who has met several times with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, testified that he expects Vick to play in the NFL for the 2009 season.
I expect him to play in the National Football League,” Segal said.
Otherwise, he's going to have to work a lot of overtime at his construction job for creditors see a dime of Vick's money.

B.J. Raji fails drug test

Since last season, Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji has seen his draft stock soar. Raji had a strong 2008 campaign, strong week of practice at Senior Bowl and good workouts at the NFL combine and his pro day.

Raji, who was projected as a top 10 pick, may now see his draft stock drop. Per Sports Illustrated, Raji failed a drug test taken at the NFL combine in February.
"Brian Murphy, Chief Operating Officer of Athletes First, which represents Raji, told SI.com: 'We will not comment on rumors from unnamed sources. I do know that B.J. has been one of the hardest workers and nicest individuals that we at Athletes First represent. There is no doubt that he will be an invaluable addition to an NFL team both on the field as a player and in the community as a role model.'"
Raji had also tested positive for marijuana when he was at BC before the 2008 season and missed the 2007 season due to academic reasons.

In 2008, Raji had 42 tackles (16 for a loss) and eight sacks.

Stallworth surrenders to face DUI manslaughter charges

Cleveland Browns WR Donte' Stallworth surrendered today in Miami on charges of DUI manslaughter. He was later released on $200,000 bond.

Stallworth, who had a blood-alcohol level of .126, struck Mario Reyes, who later died, in Miami Beach on March 14th. The legal limit in the state of Florida is .08.
In a brief statement outside jail, Stallworth said: "I just want to first extend my condolences to the Reyes family. My prayers are with them." Stallworth also said he has "full confidence and faith" in the legal system.
The arraignment date for Stallworth to enter his plea is April 23rd.

If convicted, the minimum and maximum sentences for DUI manslaughter are four and fifteen years, respectively.

Broncos give Bears 5th-round pick in addition to Cutler

In the trade that sent QB Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton and three draft picks (two first-rounders and one third-rounder), the Broncos will also send a fifth-round pick in 2009 to Chicago as well.

The Broncos acquired the fifth-round pick from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Keary Colbert last year.

In Denver, Cutler, who threw for 4526 yards last year, had Brandon Marshall and Eddie "Casino" Royal as targets. In Chicago, he won't have many weapons in the passing game. However, the Bears have an established running game (a.k.a. a QB's best friend) with rookie Matt Forte, who rushed for 1238 yards (7th in NFL) last year.

Jay Cutler to Bears for Orton, picks

Cutler will be playing for his childhood favorite team.

Per Jay Glazer at Fox Sports, the Denver Broncos have traded Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton and first-round draft picks this year and next year. The Broncos will also get a third-round pick in 2010.

The Broncos will now have the 12th overall draft pick and the 18th pick (from Chicago) in this year's draft.

Hip surgery for Brandon Marshall

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall had hip surgery yesterday that was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon. Philippon has also performed hip surgery on Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner.

Per Mike Klis of the Denver Post, Marshall is expected back by training camp, which begins in late-July.

The Broncos are in the process of working on a trade for quarterback Jay Cutler, who finished third in the NFL in passing yards in 2008. Also, Marshall is possibly facing an NFL suspension stemming from a March disorderly conduct arrest even though the charge was dropped.

With the possibility of a suspension looming and the likelihood of a new QB in the Mile High city, Marshall is unlikely to duplicate his performance of the past two seasons where he recorded 100+ receptions for 1200+ yards each year.

As a 25-year-old that has a Wikipedia page with a section chronicling his "Legal Trouble," the odds are fairly high that he'll get arrested again this year.

Bears working to sign Orlando Pace

The Chicago Bears are working to sign seven-time Pro Bowl Orlando Pace, who was released by the Rams this off-season in a cost-cutting move.

Per Vaughn McClure of The Chicago Tribune, the Bears would start Pace at left tackle and move Chris Williams, the Bears' first-round pick last year, to right tackle.

This off-season, the Bears also signed Kevin Shaffer, who started for the Cleveland Browns last year.

Before signing Shaffer, the Bears used Frank Omiyale, who was signed from the Carolina Panthers, at right tackle during team workouts. However, if the Bears sign Pace, Omiyale would move back to guard, which is where he played last year with the Panthers.

Nick Cole signs tender by Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles guard Nick Cole, who was undrafted in 2006, signed his one-year tender as a restricted free agent and will earn $1.545 million in 2009.

Due to injuries on the Eagles' offensive line, Cole started the last five regular-season games and all three post-season games for the Eagles in 2008.

He's expected to either enter as a starter in 2009 or be the top reserve on the Eagles' O-line.

The undrafted Hank Baskett, who joined the Eagles in 2006 as well, was also offered a one-year tender with the Eagles. Although he hasn't signed the tender yet, he is expected to do so.

Witten talks about T.O. and Romo

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten spoke to Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram at a charity event for the March of Dimes.
"I think more than anything being 9-7 is unacceptable with this team," Witten said. "When you talk about change, you want to find a way to get more wins."
Hill asked Witten about T.O.
"...Terrell was a great player. I think I was a better player because of him and what he brought to the team. His track record speaks for itself. He has been good wherever he has been. He is going to help Buffalo a lot."
While T.O.'s presence led to single coverage for Witten and the other receivers, Witten has to be thrilled to not have to deal with Owens' paranoia and whining.

He was also asked if T.O.'s departure makes Romo and the locker room environment better.
"...Everybody has got good chemistry when you win. For all of us it's something we have to evaluate and understand. I don't want to look at it and say we are a better locker room. We got a lot of good football players. I do think that. We got to go show it. We got to stop talking about it."
Chemistry isn't critical when you're winning. But when you face adversity, you need to be able to rely on your teammates. The Cowboys couldn't count on each other when their annual December collapse began last year.

Witten's 2008 numbers, 81 receptions for 952 yards and four touchdowns, were off his 2007 career highs. During a span of four weeks from week 8 to 12, Witten had only four receptions in four games. He broke his rib against the Buccaneers in week 8.

Broncos "have phone records"

Last night, Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen stated that his attempts and those of coach Josh McDaniels over the past 10 days to contact QB Jay Cutler were unsuccessful. Therefore, Bowlen said enough is enough and has decided to start the process to trade Cutler.

Per NFL.com, Cutler's camp rejects Bowlen's claim.

But Pat Bowlen has the ultimate rebuttal to Cutler and crew: “We have the phone records.”

There will be heavy demand for Cutler due to his physical ability. However, buyer beware. Do you really want the leader of your team to be a liar and cry baby?

Sweet sixteen for Isaac Bruce

Isaac Bruce, who led the San Francisco 49ers in receiving last year, will return for his 16th season in the NFL.

49ers coach Mike Singletary had asked Bruce to let the team know his status by April 1st. Bruce will earn a salary of $1.475 million and count $2 million towards the Niners' salary cap.

Bruce ranks fifth all-time in receptions (1,003) and second all-time in receiving yards (14,944). Bruce, who was drafted in the second round by the Rams in 1994, spent his entire career as part of the Greatest Show on Turf until last year.

His partner-in-crime in St. Louis, Torry Holt, has been released by the Rams.

In the off-season, the 49ers signed Brandon Jones from the Titans. Other potential starters at WR include Josh Morgan, Jason Hill, Arnaz Battle and Dominique Zeigler.

Donte' Stallworth charged with DUI manslaughter

Cleveland Browns WR Donte' Stallworth has been charged with one count of DUI manslaughter, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.

Per the Miami-Dade County state attorney's office, via the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Stallworth's blood-alcohol level was .126, which is above the state legal limit of .08.

The charge stems back to an accident where Stallworth hit and killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes in Miami Beach on March 14th.

NFL players like the Chiefs David Macklin, the Chargers Jamal Williams and Vincent Jackson and Stallworth are some of those that have been charged with DUI in 2009. And it's not a new phenomenon.

The minimum sentence for DUI manslaughter is four years. However, if he receives a much shorter sentence like the Rams Leonard Little did in 1998, this won't be enough of a deterrent for Stallworth and other NFL players to avoid repeating his mistake. In fact, Little was arrested for DUI only six years after killing Susan Gutweiler.

Titans sign DeMarcus Faggins

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with cornerback DeMarcus Faggins, who has spent his seven-year career in Houston. Faggins was also considering the Miami Dolphins.
"We think it's a good fit for him to come in as the third corner and challenge for significant playing time there,'' agent Robb Nelson said. "It was a tough decision ... Tennessee was the better fit.''
Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper are the starting corners for the Titans.

However, they lost two corners this off-season. Eric King left for the Lions and Chris Carr signed with the Ravens.

Faggins started five games in 2008 for the Texans. He had 28 tackles and no interceptions in 2008.

Dansby to meet with Cards later in week

According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Cardinals general manager Rod Graves is going to meet with LB Karlos Dansby later this week in order to negotiate a long-term contract.

The Cardinals designated Dansby as their franchise player, which means he'll earn $9.7 million in 2009. Dansby was franchised in 2008 as well.

Dansby, who was the Cards' second-round pick in 2004, led the team in tackles (119), had four sacks and two interceptions in 2008.

Reaching a long-term deal with Dansby is (and should be) a priority for the Cardinals. The team and Dansby can negotiate a longer-term deal until July 15th.
