Jeff Garcia signs with Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders signed free-agent QB Jeff Garcia, who grew up in the Bay Area and as a Raiders' fan, to a one-year contract.
Signing Garcia, who made the Pro Bowl in 2007, is a good move for the Raiders even though he is 39 years old. I'm surprised more teams weren't interested in him, but he is a more than capable back-up if Russell gets hurt and/or plays poorly.
Garcia posted the ninth best QB rating (90.2) in 2008. He threw for 2712 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in 12 games in 2008.
"I feel like I still have the energy and enthusiasm to continue for another year or two, but I know I'm getting close ," Garcia said. "It's just one of those things where, the older I get, and the more my family is growing and all of those things, off the field, it starts to make me really think about, seriously, when that day is going to come. I know it's coming close, but I know that it's not quite ready to end after (the 2008) season."He will be a back-up and mentor to JaMarcus Russell, the top overall pick in 2007.
