Is Vontae Davis misunderstood?

Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis had some question marks heading into the NFL draft.

Primarily, the concerns surrounded "character issues" and that he might turn out like his older brother Vernon. In other words, he might be a physical freak of nature that doesn't live up to his potential on the football field.

Per David J. Neal of the Miami Herald, many close to Davis, who was raised by his grandmother Adaline, think Davis is misunderstood.
''He didn't have a lot of life outside of football and study hall,'' [former Illinois assistant coach and current New Mexico head coach Mike] Locksley said. "If you see him, he probably has his Bible with him. He's a strong, spiritual kid.''
And if you don't believe Locksley, just ask Jimmy Vontae himself.
''Everybody who knows Vontae knows that I am a great person, a great player,'' he said, "and Bill Parcells speaks louder than words, and for him to draft me, he knows what type of person I am.''
If Vontae lives up to his potential and the "character issues" don't present themselves in Miami like he and his supporters say they won't, the Dolphins would have one of the steals of the first round.
