Jansen released by 'Skins, agrees to deal with Lions

The Washington Redskins have released tackle Jon Jansen, who was the Redskins' second-round pick in 1999.

"It hurts," Jansen said. "If I had been here three, four, five years, it might not have been so emotional, but I've been here for a decade and made so many friends. I thought I would have the opportunity to compete during training camp, but I wasn't in their plans."

It didn't take long for Jansen to find a new home, which also happens to be his old home.

Per Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions and Jansen have agreed to a one-year deal for the league veteran minimum salary ($845,000).

Jansen played high school football in Clawson (MI) and college football at the University of Michigan.

“It’s going to be hard not being a Redskin anymore, because I’ve done that longer than I’ve done anything in my life,” said Jansen. “But on the other hand, I’m excited for a new beginning.”

Since 2004 when he missed the season with a torn Achilles, Jansen has struggled to stay healthy battling various injuries. Last year, he was benched in favor of Stephen Heyer, but he finished the season as the starting right tackle.

Jansen will likely compete with Gosder Cherilus to start at right tackle, according to Cotsonika. If he doesn't start, he is an improvement to the team's depth on the offensive line.

“I want to come in and compete as hard as I can,” Jansen said. “If I end up getting some playing time, that’s great. If I can support the offensive line in whatever role, that’s great. But again, I’m a competitor. I want to come in and compete as hard as I can.”
