Kevin Smith says Lions will make the playoffs in 2009
Although the 2008 Detroit Lions were the first 0-16 team in NFL history, Lions RB Kevin Smith had a solid rookie season.
Smith rushed for 976 yards and eight touchdowns and had 39 receptions for 286 receiving yards. In the final eight games of the season, Smith rushed for 671 yards.
The Lions have one of the league's most talented receivers (insert your favorite Matt Millen joke here) in Calvin Johnson.
Plus, with the first overall pick, they selected their future franchise QB in Matthew Stafford. And they also selected Brandon Pettigrew, the most complete tight end in this year's draft, with their other first-round pick.
But Smith has done what some ill-advised idiots have done in the past.
In fact, his own (ex) teammate Jon Kitna made a couple of guarantees. Last year, Kitna made his second guarantee in as many seasons although he softened the wording the second time around.
You never hear teams like the Patriots, Colts or Steelers (minus one idiot safety) make guarantees. At least, not playoff guarantees.

“I won’t make a prediction about how many games we’re going to win,” Smith wrote recently at smith34.com, “but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season.”Last year, Donte Whitner also made a guarantee that the Bills would make the playoffs. We both know how that worked out.
“Last year we didn’t play a lot of football,” he wrote. “We gave games away as soon as we went to practice. This year everybody wants to win, we have new players and new coaches and a new attitude.”
