Broncos name Kyle Orton starting QB
In 2008, the area of concern for the Denver Broncos was not their passing game. With the addition of Josh McDaniels, former Patriots offensive coordinator, as new Broncos head coach, it seemed as though the passing game would remain strong.
The question was (still) about the defense.
With Cutler gone to Chicago and the potential issue involving receiver Brandon Marshall, a strong passing game is no longer a given.
At yesterday's first mandatory mini-camp practice, receiver Brandon Marshall showed only to speak to team owner Pat Bowlen. As expected, Marshall was a no-show today as well, per Mike Klis of the Denver Post.
Today, Kyle Orton, who the Broncos received along with two first-round picks in exchange for Cutler, was named the Broncos staring quarterback.
Most expected that Orton would win the starting gig although all reports indicated that Chris Simms was playing well.
The timing of the announcement doesn't seem to be a coincidence (although it certainly could be), but more so an attempt to take focus off the loss of the cry baby ex-QB and the drama du jour with "Baby T.O."
For the record, I think the Broncos made the right decision with Cutler, who has the franchise QB arm but not the franchise QB mentality.
That being said, McDaniels has two years tops if the plan doesn't pay off by 2010.
