Bucs GM doesn't want Freeman to start right away
There were three quarterbacks drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft: Matthew Stafford (Detroit), Mark Sanchez (NY Jets) and Josh Freeman (Tampa Bay).
Of those three, the least likely to be under center on September 13th to start the season is Freeman. That is, if GM Mark Dominik gets his way, according to Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times.
He'd prefer to let Freeman, who was the least NFL-ready out of the big three, to "sit back and learn."
"I still think he's a 21-year-old quarterback who came out as a true junior,'' Dominik said of Freeman. "You'd like for him to grow and mature into his role and not be forced into it.''
Freeman still isn't under contract, but Dominik expects that the two sides will be able to work out a deal before training camp, which starts on July 31st.
