Should the Jets' open QB competition be closed?

Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post thinks so. And so do I.

In his weekly Sunday at the Post column, Lombardi writes that Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez "must get three reps to Kellen Clemens’ one if he’s going to be ready for the opener."

Coach Rex Ryan and the Jets' front office and coaching staff can say that it's an open competition all they want, but there really is no reason to pretend that it's an open competition.

But, as the team's mini-camp closed last week, Ryan told Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News, "We probably won't know (the starter) until ...who knows? Whenever it becomes obvious to us, we'll make the decision. Obviously, you'd prefer it sooner than later, but I don't think that's going to happen."

And Sanchez, who was selected with the fifth overall pick in this year's NFL draft, finished the camp strong.

Linebacker Bart Scott is "excited" about what is a "glimpse to come" from Sanchez and safety Kerry Rhodes says of Sanchez, he's "dead on...pretty accurate...has a stronger arm than I thought."

"It was the most comfortable I've felt," said Sanchez. "I just let myself go. The stuff coach Ryan was talking about with my cadence and my voice inflection, I just let it out. I said, 'Hey, it's the last day of camp, just have fun, be yourself, play like you did in college.'"

If Ryan would "prefer it sooner than later," I'm not sure what he's waiting for.
