The Sunday Blitz

49ers receiver Isaac Bruce is returning for his 16th for one reason and one reason only. "Play in the playoffs again and win a Super Bowl," Bruce said Saturday after a minicamp practice. OK, that's two reasons, but you get the point.

The Niners extended the contract of long snapper Brian Jennings, who says "my job is to be boring, my job is to go unnoticed," he said. "My personality is to have fun."

Packers lilnebacker Nick Barnett is going to be the "mack." That is, he'll be the weak-side ILB in Dom Capers' 3-4 scheme and he likes "the challenge of learning a new defense, because I think it keeps you more focused.”

Former Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg will be inducted into the Montana Sports Hall of Fame.

Colts' DE Dwight Freeney, who played his high school football about 30 minutes from Eat, Drink & Sleep Football "headquarters" (i.e., my apartment), wants just "one red-zone play." Team president Bill Polian responded "I've got two words for that: Lis Franc," which is technically one word...but who's counting?

Freeney's teammate Joseph Addai admitted that he had knee surgery. "Got it cleaned out,'' he said. "It's feeling good right now.''

Former Cowboys and Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson says "Wayne Huizenga and I are always talking about QTL,'' he says. "Quality Time Left.''

The Colts intend to be the next team to place an ad on their practice jersey. I know the Colts would turn it down, but what if the offer to advertise came from the Titans, Texans or Jags?

Of the dehydration incident in Vegas, Saints TE Jeremy Shockey says: "If you're halfway intelligent you can read what everybody wrote. You know what they say, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. That's in the past. I'm looking forward to the future."

Eagles TE Brent Celek has two role models, who play for NFC East foes - Cowboys TE Jason Witten and Redskins TE Chris Cooley.

Colts owner Jim Isray says Tom Moore and Howard Muud, who retired because of the NFL's pension program, are "coming back as consultants and they're going to be involved big time. Jim Caldwell will determine what that will be.''

Dolphins QB Chad Pennington won't call it "competition" with Chad Henne. "[Practice is] preparation and evaluation. We have to be prepared to play and be ready as players. Coaches have to evaluate and see who they want to play. Competition happens on Sunday.''

49er Patrick Willis is not worried about a contract extension and is excited about the defense's prospects for 2009 - "not only top 10 — top five, if not No. 1,” he said. Actually, Patrick, #1 is taken...Kerry Rhodes called dibbs.
