Brett Favre leaves Vikings hanging

NFL: DEC 28 Dolphins at Jets

A Brett Favre return seemed inevitable. Instead, he's going to remain retired, per Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Now the Vikings will need to put their faith in the winner of the Tarvaris Jackson-Sage Rosenfels QB battle to lead them to the Super Bowl.

Unless, of course, Favre changes his mind again. I don't think we can ever rule that out.

Meanwhile, this "doesn't change anything" for Vikings head coach Brad Childress.

"I just think it was a rare opportunity to explore a Hall of Fame quarterback who had background in the NFC and in this division," Childress said. "He knows our system inside out ... This doesn't change anything about how I feel about our football team."

First, I don't believe Childress. But if he were telling the truth, does the team share the same opinion stated by the coach?

Many of the players recruited Favre and Jackson and Rosenfels know this.

The best-case scenario seems to be a locker room that is a little tense and awkward at first and then fades. However, we all know how fragile the ego of a quarterback is. (See Cutler, Jay)

Players must report for camp on Thursday and practices begin on Friday. It wouldn't shock me if this were a bargaining ploy by Favre and his agent Bus Cook simply to increase the value of a contract (or the guaranteed portion of it).

When you swing for the fences like the Vikings have, you need to hit the ball out of the park. Instead, they whiffed.

And now Favre has screwed a second NFC North team.
