Does Junior Seau = Brett Favre?
Junior Seau is almost, sort-of, kind-of like Brett Favre.
Favre, who recently put a down payment on a condo near the Vikings practice facility, is all but officially coming out of retirement (again). Favre nauseatingly dominated the headlines in the summer of 2008.
However, Favre is not the only player who might come out of multiple retirements this season.
Per SportsRadioInterviews.com, Junior Seau responded to a question about his official retirement status on San Diego's XX 1090 radio by saying, “I’ll definitely look at it at the end of October or November. Let’s put it that way.”
If you remember, Seau came out of his first retirement, which he called his "graduation," by signing with the Patriots only four days after his August 16th (2006) "graduation" from the San Diego Chargers.
When signing with the Patriots in 2006, Seau said, "When a championship team calls, you've definitely got to answer the call and definitely look into it. That's what I did."
Last year, Seau re-signed with the Patriots on December 5th to replace Adalius Thomas, who was placed on injured reserve.
If the Patriots happen to need him again this year, Seau might come out of retirement again.
“...I think we’re always going to hold on to that opportunity as long as we can. And it’s not like we’re hurting anyone. What I’m doing is basically just surfing and enjoying life with the kids and carrying on as if I am retired. But if they happen to need me towards the end of the season like they did last year then I’ll definitely look at it.”
So we may see both Brett Favre and Junior Seau on the football field at some point during the 2009 season (separately, unless they meet in the Super Bowl).
The difference is their motives.
If/when Favre comes back, it would be to stick it to a former team. If Seau comes back, it would be to help a former team.
