Sean Payton picks Jets as non-playoff team to make playoffs

NFL: NOV 24 Packers at Saints

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is filling in for SI's Peter King and wrote this morning's Monday Morning Quarterback column.

In it, Payton talks about the optimism each team and its fan base feels as they enter into a new season as training camps are set to open within the next ten days or so. Moreover, he reminds us of the annual ritual of four to six non-playoff teams making the playoffs the following season.

So, which non-playoff team does Payton think has the best chance to make the playoffs in 2009?

The New York Jets.

Payton writes, "If I had to choose one non-playoff team from last season that has a chance to make it into the 2009 postseason it would be the New York Jets. I think Rex Ryan will do a great job of creating a culture that lends itself to winning. I also love Mark Sanchez as a young quarterback prospect. We will find out soon enough."

I will begin my daily team-by-team assessments starting August 3rd, but it seems as though he missed a more obvious choice within the Jets' division. He even writes that Brady "is 100 percent healthy and ready to go."
