Pats release QB Kevin O'Connell

According to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe, the Patriots have waived back-up quarterback Kevin O'Connell.

The Patriots now have three quarterbacks on the roster -- Tom Brady, Andrew Walter and rookie Brian Hoyer.

O'Connell, the Patriots' third-round pick in 2008, was expected to back up Brady.

It's possible that the Chiefs could claim O'Connell off of waivers and if they do (as pointed out by Pro Football Talk), the Chiefs would have all three non-injured QBs from last year's Patriots' roster -- Matt Cassel, Kevin O'Connell and Matt Gutierrez.

In Friday's pre-season game, O'Connell completed almost as many passes to Redskins' defenders (two) as he did to Patriots' receivers (three) in his ten pass attempts.
