Case closed -- D.A. to start for now

You were probably on the edge of your seat waiting to find out. Now you know.

Browns coach Eric Mangini, who said he would designate his starting QB on Wednesday, kept his word and has named Derek Anderson the week 4 starter against Cincinnati Bengals.

Last week, Brady Quinn started against Baltimore, but he was benched at halftime in favor of D.A.

The Browns are 0-3 and have been outscored 29-95 this season. Moreover, the Browns have scored only one offensive touchdown since November 17, 2008.

In other words, that's nine games with one offensive touchdown.

Quinn, the second of the Browns' two first-round picks in 2007, has thrown three interceptions and only one touchdown in 74 passes this season. He's been sacked 10 times. Only Aaron Rodgers has been sacked (12) more.

In the second half last week, Anderson threw three picks in only 19 passes.

Speaking of the switch, receiver Braylon Edwards talks about how the switch impacts himself.

"You know D.A., he's a guy who likes to throw the deep ball, likes to get the ball out," Edwards said. "I like to run deep routes, so it's natural he'd look for me in those situations."

Edwards conveniently left out what should have been the next sentence -- "And then I will proceed to drop those passes."

So, for now, Anderson is your starting QB in Cleveland. At least for week 4 the first half Sunday.

USC's Stafon Johnson has emergency surgery

After a weightlifting bar fell on his throat while bench pressing, USC senior running back Stafon Johnson needed emergency surgery.

"It hit him with a lot of force, and it hurt him," coach Pete Carroll said (per ESPN's Ted Miller). "No broken bones as far as I understand, but he's got some damage in there somewhere, and they're working it out, trying to figure out what it is. ... It is serious. He did get hurt, so we don't know exactly what it is, and they're not going to know until they go through the surgery."

Johnson has 157 rushing yards and a team-high five touchdowns on the season.

According to a spokesperson at California Hospital Medical Center (via the Los Angeles Times), Johnson's condition was described as "critical but stable."

Hopefully Johnson will have a full and speedy recovery.

Gore to miss three weeks (two games)

The San Francisco 49ers will be without running back Frank Gore for the next two games with a right ankle sprain and right foot sprain, per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Gore, who had 216 yards in week 2, left yesterday's game after carrying the ball only one time for four yards.

While Gore is out, rookie Glen Coffee will get the start. Coffee had 25 carries for 54 yards against the Vikings yesterday.

San Francisco's next two games are against the Rams and the Falcons. Then they have a bye in week 6.

Both the Rams and Falcons rank in the bottom 10 in the NFL in rushing defense allowing 148 and 136 rushing yards per game, respectively.

Per Barrows, the 49ers may move Kory Sheets from the practice squad to the active roster.

Colts awaiting results of Freeney's MRI

The Colts are one of four AFC teams to start the season with a perfect 3-0 record despite battling several injuries so far this season.

In Sunday night's win over Arizona, the Colts were without four starters -- receiver Anthony Gonzalez, safety Bob Sanders, cornerback Kelvin Hayden and linebacker Gary Brackett. Now you can add All-Pro defensive end Dwight Freeney to the injured list.

Freeney, who left yesterday's game when he "felt something pop" in his quadricep, had an MRI today.

"The docs will report to us later this evening, so we'll know something then, but I don't think there will be anything definitive for quite a while," [Colts president Bill] Polian said (via the Associated Press) on his weekly radio show Monday night. "The positive side is that he basically said, 'I can walk, I can play.' The good news is I don't have any bad news."

While it appears likely that Freeney will miss Sunday's game against the Seahawks, it would be a devastating loss for the Colts' defense if Freeney misses an extended period of time.

Freeney, the Colts' first-round pick in 2002, has four sacks in three games this season.

Pennington is done for the year

An interesting stat about Dolphins QB Chad Pennington will remain intact.

According to Omar Kelly and Dave Hyde of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Pennington, who had an MRI today, was diagnosed with a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder and he'll miss the remainder of the season.

Coach Tony Sparano wouldn't confirm the diagnosis.

"If, and again I don't know the details so I'd rather not go down that road; but the leadership thing can't be water off the duck's back, I think it's a major issue. [We would miss] I think experience of a guy of his caliber in the huddle like that," Sparano said (via the Sun-Sentinel). "We'll see what happens, we aren't sure."

The Dolphins are now 0-3 and only three teams have made the playoffs with an 0-3 start since 1990.

That being said, every year that Pennington has played 16 games, his team has made the playoffs. Assuming (safely) that Pennington doesn't play in week 4, his streak will remain alive even if the Dolphins miss the playoffs (very likely) in 2009.

However, will his career be over?

He's already had two shoulder surgeries before. Provided the diagnosis that the Sun-Sentinel is reporting is accurate, I think it's a safe bet that Pennington has played his last game in the NFL.

Chad Henne, who was drafted by the Dolphins in the second round last year, will take over a year earlier than scheduled. In yesterday's game, Henne completed 10 of 19 passes for 92 yards and one interception.

Clowney was inactive due to tweet about playing time

Plenty of NFL players have tweeted things that they probably wish they hadn't. Add Jets receiver David Clowney to that list.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that Clowney was inactive against the Titans due to a tweet he made about his (lack of) playing time.

"To me, this is about our team," said Ryan, per Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger. "No individual is bigger than our team. If I feel a guy isn't putting the team first, I'll put the guy down. That's just the way I feel. You're right, there's no reason David Clowney shouldn't be up every week.

"I wanted to see how he would respond. He did a great job. He worked his butt off (last week)."

After the Patriots' game (week 2), Clowney tweeted, "1 play in the 1st Half, 4 plays in the 2nd half,.... A bit disappointed about my playing time but very happy and satisfied about the win."

Clowney, who was the Packers' fifth-round pick in 2007, still hasn't caught a pass this season.

The Lions have a winning streak of 1

Before finishing with the NFL's first-ever 0-16 season in 2008, the Detroit Lions beat the Kansas City Chiefs on December 23, 2007. That win against the Chiefs ended a six-game losing streak.

So, in other words, the Lions had a 19-game losing streak entering today's game against the Washington Redskins. And they had only won one game in their previous 26 attempts.

But today the Lions gave the fans in the Motor City reason to celebrate as they have started a one-game winning streak by beating the Redskins 19-14.

And new head coach Jim Schwartz, who was the Titans defensive coordinator last year, got his first career win.

Rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford, who had thrown five interceptions in his first two games, did not throw any interceptions and second-year running back Kevin Smith rushed for over 100 yards.

However, Smith left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.

The Bears, Steelers and Packers are up next on the Lions' schedule before their week 7 bye.

Even if their winning streak is short-lived, the Lions currently have a better record than their coach's previous team (the Titans are 0-3).

Frank Gore left game, X-rays negative

49ers running back Frank Gore was carted to the locker room after suffering an ankle injury earlier in today's game against the Vikings.

Although the X-rays were negative, Gore's return is considered "doubtful."

Gore carried the ball only once for four yards.

With 8+ minutes remaining in the game, 49ers' back-up RB Glen Coffee has 20 carries for 55 yards and the Niners lead the Vikings 24-20.

Coffee, the team's third-round draft pick, led the pre-season in rushing with 249 yards. In his first two regular-season games, he rushed for 10 yards on 10 carries and no touchdowns.

Rams will be without Jason Smith vs Packers

The St. Louis Rams will be without rookie right tackle Jason Smith, the overall second pick in this year's NFL draft, per the Associated Press.

In Smith's place, the Rams will start Adam Goldberg.

The Packers will also be without offensive tackle Chad Clifton.

Wes Welker out for second week in a row

The Patriots, who have thrown the ball 100 times in two games, will be without receiver Wes Welker for a second game in a row.

Per Christopher Gasper of the Boston Globe, the Patriots will have only four active receivers -- Randy Moss, Joey Galloway, Julian Edelman and Sam Aiken.

In week 1, Welker had 12 receptions for 93 yards. Edelman had a big week (eight receptions, 98 yards) in Welker's absence last week.

Dwayne Bowe is out vs Eagles

The Eagles will be without several players today -- QB Donovan McNabb, RB Brian Westbrook, WR Kevin Curtis, etc. -- against the Chiefs.

Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe is inactive for today's game as well, according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star.

In addition to being without Bowe, receiver Quinten Lawrence is inactive.

Bowe has nine receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns in the first two games of the season.

Westbrook out, McCoy to start

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook won't play today against the Kansas City Chiefs, per ESPN's Sal Paolantonio. Instead, rookie LeSean McCoy will start in his place.

Westbrook, who was listed as questionable with an ankle injury on the team's injury report, will have two weeks for his injury to heal. The Eagles have a bye in week 4.

On the season, Westbrook has 116 rushing yards (on 26 carries) and McCoy, the Eagles' second-round draft pick, has 64 rushing yards (on 14 carries).

The Chiefs have allowed 132.5 rushing yards per game and three rushing touchdowns this season.

Reggie Wayne to start 100th straight game tonight

Colts receiver Reggie Wayne will make his 100th consecutive start tonight when the Colts play the Cardinals.

"That's my job," Wayne said, per Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star. "That's what they pay me to do, be on the field and ready. I take pride in it. I think everybody in this locker room should take pride in playing the game, seeing how many they can play in a row."

Wayne's streak of 99 straight starts is 55 more than the next closest receiver -- Buffalo's Lee Evans.

"I ain't been 100 percent since my rookie year when I came in on (owner Jim) Irsay's helicopter," Wayne said. "If I can go, I go. There's been hundreds of times when I'm still hurting from the week before, but that's part of it.

"You've got to be able to push through those nicks and pains. I really want to be out there. That's the only way I can make things happen. I feel like if I'm out there, my team can trust in me."

Wayne, who was the Colts' first-round pick in 2001, is currently fifth in the league in receiving yards (199) and tied for ninth in receptions (13) through two games.

In our consensus/average fantasy rankings, Wayne is #2 in our top 50 wide receivers for week 3.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 3

Every week, I pick three NFL games against the spread (ATS) for entertainment purposes only (of course). That being said, last week (1-2 ATS) wasn't as entertaining as week 1 (3-0 ATS), but my 2009 record of 4-2 (66.7%) is slightly better than my 2008 record of 31-18-2 (63.3%).

In any event, here are my week 3 picks:

Titans +3 (over Jets): While it's not surprising that one of the these two teams is undefeated (2-0) and the other is winless (0-2) heading into their week 3 matchup, most would have expected their roles to have been reversed. Instead, it's a rookie head coach and a rookie QB (this seems familiar) that is surprising folks and in first place while the top overall AFC seed in 2008 is winless. That being said, the Titans are better than an 0-2 team and desperate for a win. I expect the Titans to got off the schneid this week, but I'd gladly take a field goal as security.

Packers -6.5 (over Rams): The Rams are arguably the worst team in the NFL. The Packers are my pick to win the NFC North. After a disappointing home loss to the Bengals in which Chad Ochocinco did the Lambeau Leap, the Packers will take care of business against the lowly Rams. The Packers' biggest problem so far has been protecting Aaron Rodgers. And that will continue to be a problem -- against good defenses, i.e., not the Rams. The Rams are one of four teams to allow an average of 400+ yards per game of offense this season and have recorded only one sack in their two games.

Panthers +8.5 (over Cowboys): A desperate team with playoff aspirations in 2009. You could argue that description fits both teams. But an 0-3 start for the Panthers would be disastrous in a division with two 2-0 teams. While the Cowboys passing defense is awful, their passing offense has its flaws as well. Speaking of flaws, Tony Romo will succumb to the pressure of trying to do too much as several Cowboys' greats, such as Tony Dorsett and Troy Aikman, have criticized Romo in the media this week. The Cowboys may still win (and as a Cowboys' fan, I hope they do), but a touchdown plus is too much for them to spot the Panthers.

To view the picks of our other three "handicappers," click here for all of our week 3 picks.

Kenny Phillips out for year, maybe longer

The New York Giants lost safety Kenny Phillips for the season after placing him on injured reserve (IR) today, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

"I really feel for Kenny because he had worked so hard during the offseason to prepare himself for the '09 season," Giants GM Jerry Reese said, according to Vacchiano. "He had a great camp and was just beginning to come into his own and showed flashes of being one of the premier safeties in the NFL. We expect him to recover from this setback and come back stronger than ever. This league is about making adjustments and we will do that."

The Giants claimed Aaron Rouse off waivers from Green Bay, who drafted Rouse in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft.

Both C.C. Brown and Michael Johnson were the only other active safeties on the Giants' roster and Brown will take over Phillips' spot in the starting lineup.

Phillips, the Giants first-round pick in 2008, is leading the team in tackles (13) and sacks (2).

With patellofemoral arthritis, Phillips could end up having microfracture surgery and Bob Glauber of Newsday lists some operative approaches to treat his situation (via Sinai Hospital's website).

Per Dr. Michael Kaplan (via Glauber), "It doesn't bode well for a football player to have this. It’s very unusual, and he may have had a traumatic injury where he got smashed in the kneecap. If it's severe enough to require microfracture surgery, it's a worrisome circumstance. It's not an overnight get-well situation, and the results are somewhat less predictable than ligament or cartilage tears."

In addition to losing Phillips for the year (or more), the Giants have been without cornerbacks Aaron Ross and Kevin Dockery for the first two games this season with hamstring injuries.

September 23, 2009

The Wednesday Blitz

Steelers receiver Hines Ward said, "I’ll still hit [Keith Rivers]. I’ll just get fined. It’s either that or try to hurt somebody. So you either fine me or you want me to end someone’s career. I’d rather take a fine than end someone’s career, so I'm not going to change."

Patriots QB Tom Brady expects to be pressured by the Falcons' defense.

The Titans have signed punter Reggie Hodges and released cornerback Cary Williams.

Despite suffering an ankle sprain in last week's game, San Francisco's Frank Gore expects to be ready for Sunday's game against the Vikings.

Speaking of Cowboys RB Marion Barber, running backs coach Skip Peete said, "He says he feels good, but there are a lot of days I don't feel great and I tell everybody I feel good. So we'll see what happens.''

Cowboys LT Flozell Adams was fined $12,500 for two penalties that resulted from kicking Justin Tuck and Osi Umyeniora.

Tuck could miss one to two games with the injury he suffered when tripped by Adams.

Bucs coach Raheem Morris is optimistic that Antonio Bryant will play Sunday against the Giants.

Giants receiver Mario Manningham was limited at practice Wednesday.

John Niyo of the Detroit News speculates that rookie DeAndre Levy will start over Jordon Dizon to replace the injured Lions linebacker Ernie Sims.

The Colts have re-signed linebacker Jordan Senn.

Per Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times, the Buccaneers have signed safety Corey Lynch from the Bengals' practice squad and cornerback Marcus Hamilton, who was released by the Bears.

The Jaguars lost receiver Troy Williamson for the season and waived Nate Hughes.

Danny Amendola was signed Tuesday off Philadelphia's practice squad by the Rams, who released Derek Stanley.

Bills receiver Terrell Owens said: “I think that with anything I say, it has been kind of misconstrued or taken out of context. ..." Therefore, he is not speaking to the media after games.

With 10,000 tickets left to sell (unlikely to be sold), the Lions are likely to face a local blackout.

Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall said: "... We're 2-0, the fans are happy, the players are happy, coaches are happy. Everybody's happy. Every Denver Bronco, fan, are happy right now. And I'm the same."

Chester Pitts is out for the season

Texans guard Chester Pitts, who has started every game in the team's history, will miss the remainder of the season, per the Associated Press.

Today Pitts had microfracture surgery and he will be placed on Injured Reserve (IR). Kasey Studdard will start in Pitts' place.

Pitts, who was the team's second-round pick in 2002, has started 114 consecutive games, which is a franchise record.

Hardwick out at least eight weeks

The injury bug has hit the San Diego Chargers hard.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, center Nick Hardwick, who missed Sunday's game against Baltimore, is having surgery on his ankle today and he will miss at least eight weeks.

There is no word on whether the Chargers will place him on Injured Reserve (IR), which would end his season.

The Chargers placed nose tackle Jamal Williams on IR Sunday.

Scott Mruczkowski will continue to start for Hardwick and Mruczkowski's back-up is Dennis Norman, who was signed last week.

Bart Scott says Revis was "the better man" (over Moss) Sunday

Surprise, surprise. Jets linebacker Bart Scott has voiced his opinion on the performance Sunday by Patriots receiver Randy Moss and specifically on the coverage applied by teammate Darrelle Revis on Moss.

Moss, who had previously stated that Revis needed safety help over the top to shut down Moss, had four receptions for 24 yards.

"All week he was talking about bring a shutdown corner, but there really are no shutdown corners in the league because they have help most of the game," Moss said (via The Providence Journal) Sunday. "I probably could be a shutdown corner if I had (Pats' safety Brandon) Meriweather over the top for the whole game. You have to give credit where credit is due; I'm not taking anything away from their whole defense, they made plays and we didn't get things done."

Whether or not Revis is the best corner in the league is debatable, but he is definitely a "shutdown corner." And his play backs that up.

In week one against the Texans, Revis shut down Andre Johnson, who had four receptions for 35 yards.

Johnson and Moss are widely considered to be in the top four or so receivers in the league along with others like Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald and Detroit's Calvin Johnson.

Per Ian Rappaport of the Boston Herald, Scott said, “I hear the easy cop-out by Moss that anyone can play cornerback. Sometimes, you got to give the man his credit, that (Revis) was the better man that day. It doesn’t take away from the fact that Moss is a great receiver in this league. But (Revis) shut him down. Randy was coming across the middle real slow.”

Scott went on to say, “Tell [Moss] to man up and come across the middle like a man if he wants to be a complete receiver in this league.”

The Jets and Patriots play each other again on Sunday, November 22nd in Foxboro.

September 22, 2009

The Tuesday Blitz

Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell, who blocked a field goal attempt that was returned for a score, was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News asks, "What will the Cowboys do against the real Steve Smith?" The Cowboys face the Panthers on Monday and allowed Steve Smith from the Giants to catch 10 passes for 134 yards on Sunday.

The Ravens traded linebacker and special teams player Prescott Burgess to the Patriots for a conditional seventh-round pick.

Colts receiver Pierre Garcon's only catch Monday night was his first NFL touchdown in front of 43 family and friends in attendance.

Submit your entry in our week 3 Fantasy Football Survivor contest.

The Browns have released tight end Martin Rucker and defensive back Marquis Floyd. They claimed Greg Estandia off waivers and signed free-agent defensive back Anthony Madison.

Ex-Giants receiver Plaxico Burress began his jail sentence today.

The Chargers have signed defensive lineman Alfonso Boone to a one-year contract.

Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who has a broken rib, says that he is "absolutely hoping to play" on Sunday against the Bears.

Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who led the NFL in sacks in 2008, has now gone sackless in three consecutive NFL regular-season games.

Discuss the upcoming Tennessee Titans at New York Jets game in our NFL Gameday Forum.

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has shut down Houston's Andre Johnson and New England's Randy Moss in back-to-back games. Here's what teammate Jerricho Cotchery says about Revis: "Guys are trying to short-change him, saying he's getting help. Revis doesn't need help. I go against him every day. He's top notch. He's as good as it gets."

Bucs receiver Antonio Bryant says of his bone bruise, "I'm trying to put myself in a position where I don't have to be on and off it during the week. We'll definitely let it heal completely."

According to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News, Eagles coach Andy Reid is confident that running back Brian Westbrook can regain his old form.

The Bucs have placed Jermaine Phillips, who has a broken thumb, on injured reserve, which ends his season.

San Francisco running back Frank Gore, who had 207 rushing yards Sunday, was selected as the NFC offensive player of the week.

Matt Cassel to start Sunday in Philadelphia

The Kansas City Chiefs will start Matt Cassel at quarterback on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, per the Associated Press.

In last week's game against the Raiders, Cassel finished with a passer rating of only 66.3 and threw two interceptions and one touchdown. In the season opener against the Ravens, Brodie Croyle finished with a passer rating of 116.1, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

General manager Scott Pioli traded for and subsequently signed Cassel to a six-year contract extension, but Chiefs coach Todd Haley is more than willing to switch to Croyle (or another QB) if Cassel struggles against the Eagles' defense as well.

“You’ve got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win,” Haley said. “If that means another quarterback being in there other than Matt Cassel, then sign me up.”

Haley points out how well the Warner-for-Leinart switch worked out.

“When we made that change, there was a lot of negative feedback— 'What about the future?' There weren’t too many people saying much when we were in the Super Bowl last year,” Haley said.

In his first season as a starter since high school, Cassel threw for 3,693 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with the Patriots last year.

Heartbreaking loss to open a new era for the Cowboys

Despite turning the ball over four times and getting weak play from their cornerbacks, the Dallas Cowboys nearly won the inaugural game in their new stadium, which set a record for attendance (105,121) in a regular-season game.

I was one of the 105,000+ in attendance and it was certainly an amazing experience. Yet it was frustrating to watch Tony Romo and the secondary play so poorly.

"We can't win games if I do things like that," said Romo, per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.

Speaking of the pass he threw that led to a pick six, Romo said, "They changed defense right at the snap. We thought we had a good play there but the cornerback read it."

And here's what he had to say about his third interception down the field: "I threw the ball thinking no one was back there. Without finding him, you can't do that. It's very disappointing, very frustrating that I would make a decision like that ... It hurts right now and it'll hurt again tomorrow, but I will improve from it."

As you already know, Romo needs to make better decisions for the Cowboys to win. Their three-headed rushing attack (although Tashard Choice had no carries last night) continues to be as good as any in the NFL.

Marion Barber, who left the game with a quadriceps injury, had 124 yards on 18 carries and Felix Jones had 96 yards on seven carries.

Their run defense held the Giants, who have one of the NFL's best run offenses, to only 97 yards on 26 attempts.

Like on offense, however, it was the Cowboys' pass defense that did the team no favors.

Cornerbacks Terrence Newman said they "didn't hold up our end" and Orlando Scandrick said that he "probably had the worst tackling game and we had mental errors."

The Cowboys will face an desperate Carolina Panthers, who are 0-2, next Monday night. Although this was a heart-breaking loss for the Cowboys, what matters most is how they handle the adversity and whether or not they bounce back in seven days.

Jamal Williams done for year

The San Diego Chargers were already expecting to be without RB LaDainian Tomlinson, center Nick Hardwick and possibly guard Louis Vasquez for today's game against Baltimore.

They will also be without defensive tackle Jamal Williams for today's game and the rest of the season.

Williams, a three-time Pro Bowler, has been placed in injured reserve (IR) by the Chargers and is done for the year. DE Andre Coleman will fill his roster spot and Ogemdi Nwagbuo was Williams' back-up.

The Chargers will also be without defensive tackle Travis Johnson (groin) today.

L.T., Hardwick out against Ravens

When the San Diego Chargers host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, they will be without running back LaDainian Tomlinson and center Nick Hardwick, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Michael Bennett and Darren Sproles will split carries in L.T.'s place. Scott Mruczkowski will start in place of Hardwick.

In addition to both Tomlinson and Hardwick being out Sunday, the Chargers are likely to be without right guard Louis Vasquez, who is listed as questionable on the injury report. If Vasquez doesn't play, Brandyn Dombrowski will start.

"If [Tomlinson doesn't play], Michael Bennett can play," [Ravens coach John] Harbaugh said on Friday, according to Ken Murray of the Baltimore Sun. "Of course, [Darren] Sproles, everybody has been taking about him all week, but Michael Bennett can play. We've seen him before in the past, too. They've got a whole bevy of backs."

With the injuries to the Chargers' offensive line and the stinginess of the Ravens' run defense, neither Bennett nor Sproles is a good fantasy play.

The Ravens were third in the NFL against the run (81.4 yards per game) in 2008. In their first game this year, they held the Chiefs to only 29 rushing yards.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 2

Our opening week was similar to our 2008: a strong performance. In picking three games against the spread (ATS) last week, I was 3-0 ATS. As a group of four "handicappers," we were 8-4 ATS in week one.

As usual, our picks are for entertainment purposes only and, of course, being right is a whole lot more entertaining than being wrong.

Here are my week two picks:

Patriots -3.5 (over Jets): This game could easily be an embarrassment. However, it won't necessarily be embarrassing in the way that Jets' safety Kerry Rhodes expects. Rhodes said, "You go out from the first quarter on, from the first play on, and try to embarrass them. Not just go out there and try to win, try to embarrass them." Is it wise to provide bulletin-board material for the three-time champions (this decade) and a team that has beaten the Jets in the Meadowlands in eight consecutive games? Of course not. This game could get ugly (and fast).

Steelers -3 (over Bears): How much do I like the Steelers in this matchup? Nearly as much as I dislike the Bears. Last week, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler threw four interceptions against the Packers. Granted, some of the picks may have been the fault of the Bears receivers. But Cutler could have easily have had six picks in that game. The Steelers, who had the top-rated defense in 2008, will bring the pressure against Cutler and stymie the run. Not much on the ground and mistakes in the air for the Bears' offense equals a Steelers' win and cover.

Colts -3 (over Dolphins): In their last 16 home games, the Dolphins are only 3-13 against the spread (ATS). As a home underdog of 3 points or less, the Dolphins are 1-5 ATS in their last six matchups. Despite being without Anthony Gonzalez, the Colts still have Reggie Wayne, who had 162 receiving yards against Jacksonville last week, and Dallas Clark in the passing game as weapons for Peyton Manning. On the other hand, the Dolphins offense looked anemic against the Falcons last week and have now turned the ball over nine times in their past two games.

Check out all of our week two picks here.

Kerry Rhodes is out to "embarrass" Patriots

Jets safety Kerry Rhodes is an idiot. Confident. Brash. Unafraid. But stupid.

Here's what Rhodes said about his goal for the Jets' home opener against their division rivals:
You go out from the first quarter on, from the first play on, and try to embarrass them,” Rhodes said, per Gary Myers of the NY Daily News. “Not just go out there and try to win, try to embarrass them. Try to make them feel bad when they leave here. We don’t want to just beat them. We want to send a message to them, ‘We’re not backing down from you and we expect to win this game, and it’s not going to be luck, it’s not going to be a mistake.’ ”
The Jets played one game under Ryan and Sanchez and played well. And it's great to be confident.

But even trash-talking coach Rex Ryan didn't seem to be thrilled with Rhodes' comments, according to Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News.

"That's fine. I think they just want to win," Ryan told Cimini. "Our franchise has been embarrassed; eight straight losses at home (to the Patriots). I'm sure that's probably where that tone was coming from."

Of course, the Patriots are always motivated and Bill Belichick will always try to prepare them to win. And maybe Rhodes' comments or Ryan's comments or anyone's comments won't make the Pats play harder (than they would have without the comments).

But why chance it?

In our weekly picks against the spread (ATS), I was 3-0 last week and picked 63.3% of games correctly ATS last year. To me, this is the lock of the week.

If I were a betting man, I would take the Pats and give the 3.5 points. This game just might be an embarrassment.

Mike Martz is not a fan of Jay Cutler

Following in Tony Dungy's footsteps, Mike Martz had some less-than-flattering comments about Bears franchise QB Jay Cutler, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Earlier in the summer, Dungy questioned Cutler's "maturity level" and said that he'd be concerned with "some of the things that happened leading to [Cutler] leaving Denver."

"He just doesn't get it," Martz said [on NFL Network's new show The Head Coaches]. "He doesn't understand that he represents a great head coach and the rest of those players on that team ... somebody needs to talk to him."

"When I saw that postgame press conference last night, I thought he looked completely immature," Jim Mora Sr. said on The Head Coaches.

In Sunday night's game against the Packers, Cutler threw a career-high four interceptions. Although Cutler chalks up the picks to miscommunication, Smith said that Cutler "knows that some of those passes he can't throw, and he won't.''

Despite his big arm, throwing interceptions isn't a recent problem for Cutler. In 2008, he finished second in most interceptions thrown (18) behind Brett Favre.

As far as Cutler's maturity, leadership and intangibles, he demonstrated his lack of those qualities when he wouldn't return Pat Bowlen's phone calls before being traded out of Denver.

Panthers to sign Feeley, Delhomme to start Sunday

In his last two games, Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme, who was given a long-term extension in the off-season, has thrown nine interceptions and only one touchdown.

After Delhomme was benched on Sunday, back-up Josh McCown came in as Delhomme's replacement. However, McCown left the game with foot and knee injuries and he was placed on injured reserve (IR), which will end McCown's season.

The Panthers are about to sign A.J. Feeley, who was released by the Eagles. However, Panthers coach John Fox says that Delhomme remains the starter.

"It's like Tiger Woods doesn't win every tournament. [Roger] Federer doesn't win every tournament," Fox said. "There's a lot of people out there that practice and get paid, too."

I'm not sure I'd compare Delhomme to Tiger or Federer, but Fox doesn't really have any other option at this point. McCown is out for the year and Feeley will just start learning the Panthers' offense.

Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross apologized to Delhomme and said, “He was getting hit left and right. (If) we claim to be the standard of this team, as the offensive line, we've got to do better.”

The Panthers play the Falcons on Sunday.

Fortunately for the Panthers and Delhomme, the Falcons' secondary is one of the team's weaknesses. On the flip side, perhaps the Falcons are fortunate to play the Panthers, whose weakness is their quarterback play.

Eagles to start Kolb over Garcia?

It would make sense to allow Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who fractured a rib in the Carolina game, to recover and not allow him to play on Sunday against the Saints. However, McNabb wrote on his blog yesterday that he will "do my best to be ready" for Sunday.

That being said, it doesn't look likely that McNabb will start on Sunday as the Eagles signed veteran -- and former Eagles' -- quarterback Jeff Garcia yesterday.

"I am excited to come back to the organization, not excited to come back due to Donovan's injury," Garcia said in a conference call, per Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. "But I am looking forward to contributing any way I can, whether it's for a week or 2 weeks or the entire season."

As both McNabb and coach Andy Reid point out, the Eagles are fortunate to find a back-up that has been successful in this offense already.

"Adding Jeff Garcia to the roster is a great idea," McNabb wrote on his blog. "He knows our offense and how we do things around here. He's a great teammate and I look forward to working with him again."

"Jeff's going to come on board with us for 'who knows how long?' here," Reid said. "We're lucky that Jeff was available. Someone who knows the offense, has been very, very successful in the offense, and can come in and also be a positive influence for Kevin Kolb and everyone else in the locker room."

As Phil Sheriden of the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, Kevin Kolb's window of opportunity with the Eagles may be a game. Just one game.

"I'm in my third year now," Kolb said (via Sheriden) yesterday. "It's time to roll. No time better than now if I do have to step out there."

The Eagles drafted Kolb in the second round in 2006, but after this week the Eagles get Michael Vick back from league suspension and possibly McNabb back from his rib injury. That means, the Eagles could have four QBs on the roster and able to play for week 3 -- McNabb, Vick, Kolb and Garcia.

With the addition of Garcia, it would make more sense to allow McNabb the ability to recover in weeks 2 and 3 since the Eagles have their bye week in week 4. And then let a fully healthy McNabb take over in week 5.

Jerod Mayo left game with knee injury

Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, last year's AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, left last night's season opener in the first quarter with a knee injury and did not return.

In Mayo's absence, Gary Guyton and Adalius Thomas took over in the middle.

Everybody had to pick their game up when Jerod went out,’’ said Thomas. “We didn’t really know what was going on. Me and Gary went in there and just had to communicate with guys. Guys moving around everywhere. It was definitely an adjustment on the fly.’’

As one might expect, coach Bill Belichick did not offer any additional information on Mayo's status after the game, according to Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald.

However, Mayo told a teammate that “It’s nothing serious.” And considering he was able to "walk under his own power and without a limp" to the sidelines and then to the locker room, it doesn't appear to be too serious.

More information should be made available on Mayo's status today. The Patriots play the Jets in the Meadowlands on Sunday.

McNabb has broken rib; out against Saints?

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb has a broken rib and coach Andy Reid wouldn't rule out the possibility that McNabb could play next week against the Saints.

"He's sore right now. He's got a broken rib," Reid said, per the Associated Press. "We'll just see how he does over the next little bit."

That being said, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports tweeted (via Pro Football Talk) that McNabb won't play next week.

As ineffective as Kevin Kolb may be, it doesn't make sense to risk additional (worse) injury to McNabb. The Eagles play the Saints next week, the Chiefs the following week and then they have a bye in week 4.

If I were Reid, I'd sit McNabb through week 4 and bring him back after the bye.

Hakeem Nicks to have MRI, X-rays negative

Giants rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks, who suffered a foot injury in today's game, will undergo an MRI on his foot. But the X-rays that were taken today were negative, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

It’s just a test that I’m going through right now with these little knick-knack injuries,” Nicks said. “Once I get past these injuries I’ll be all right.”

“I’m not going to say I’m worried about it because it’s out of my hands at this point,” he said. “It already happened. I can’t get down on myself about it.”

According to Vacchiano, the trainers said the injury to Nicks, who was the Giants first-round pick, was to both the top and bottom of his foot. Hopefully, this injury isn't of the Lis Franc variety, which would sideline Nicks for an extended period.

Nicks had two receptions for 11 yards in his debut.

Adam Schefter tweets Tony Romo to have ankle examined

Per Adam Schefter (via his Twitter account), "Cowboys QB Tony Romo told Michael Smith that he hurt his right ankle in today's third quarter and will have it examined Monday. Hmm."

The Cowboys beat the Buccaneers today 34-21 and Romo played the entire game. He finished with 353 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Next week, the Cowboys open up their new stadium against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football. Yours truly will be making the road trip to Dallas next weekend.

Considering Romo continued to play through the injury, hopefully it's nothing serious. Stay tuned...

Smith on Panthers' offense: "We just sucked"

Panthers receiver Steve Smith summed up today's performance best: "Offensively, we just sucked. Let's be honest."

Quarterback Jake Delhomme, who threw five interceptions in the Panthers' playoff loss last year, threw four more interceptions in today's season opener before being benched for Josh McCown. Delhomme also lost a fumble.

McCown, who was acquired in a trade from Tampa, left the game with injuries, but third-string quarterback Matt Moore threw an interception as well. In addition to Delhomme's five turnovers and Moore's interception, running back Mike Goodson lost a fumble as well.

Today's seven turnovers tied a franchise record for most turnovers in a game.

Many expected Delhomme's future in Carolina to be over after last year's fiasco in the playoffs. Instead, they gave him a five-year extension with $20 million of guaranteed money.

Asked if he thought he should start next week against Atlanta, Delhomme replied, "I hope so. I'm not looking for the easy way out."

My guess is the Atlanta Falcons secondary is hoping so too.

Heart-breaking loss for the Bungles

In the first 59 minutes of the Bengals-Broncos game, there were no touchdowns scored. The Bengals scored a go-ahead touchdown with 0:41 left on the clock and it looked like the Bengals were going to go on to win.

With the score 7-6 and the ball on the Broncos own 13-yard line and 28 seconds on the clock, Broncos quarterback attempted a pass to Brandon Marshall that was deflected by Leon Hall and caught by Brandon Stokley, who took it 87 yards for the score after running along the goalline to burn additional time off the clock.

It was the wrong play, he caught it and he scored. The right play would be to knock it on the ground or pick it off,” Hall said, per Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Until that point, the Bengals played great defense. However, if their DBs didn't go to make a hit on Marshall after the tip, they would have had a shot to intercept the pass.

“We did some great things as a defense and we played solid. We have to clean up some of the small things that we slipped up on,” defensive tackle Domata Peko said.

2009 NFC West Prediction

Here are my picks for the NFC West in 2009:

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
Prediction: 8-8 (Seahawks Schedule | Seahawks Forum)

The Seahawks have Matt Hasselbeck back and healthy, they added a T.J. Houshmandzadeh as their No. 1 receiver and they have recently signed Edgerrin James to join Julius Jones in their backfield. While their running game is still suspect (at best), the Seahawks should be able to move the ball in the air. Injuries are a concern. Left tackle Walter Jones will miss (at least) the season opener and cornerback Marcus Trufant will begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and therefore miss the first six games. The Seahawks allowed a league-worst 259.3 passing yards per game last year. But the Seahawks have the most talented group of linebackers -- rookie Aaron Curry, Lofa Tatupu and Leroy Hill -- in the division.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .457 winning percentage in 2008 (24th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Indianapolis, vs Arizona, at Arizona, at Minnesota, vs Tennessee

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 23 (7.7 per season)

ARIZONA CARDINALS
Prediction: 7-9 (Cardinals Schedule | Cardinals Forum)

The Cardinals have one of the league's most explosive offenses, however, QB Kurt Warner is 38 years old and coming off hip surgery. Their running game should improve as rookie Chris "Beanie" Wells is an upgrade over Edgerrin James, who was released and signed by Seattle. I'm not sold on any team in this division to do any post-season damage, but the hangover for Super Bowl losers has been well-documented. Even worse may be the so-called "Madden curse," where the players on cover of the game get injured. Both WR Larry Fitzgerald and Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who was hurt in the NFL opener Thursday, were on the cover.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .441 winning percentage in 2008 (27th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Indianapolis, at NY Giants, vs Carolina, at Tennessee, vs Minnesota

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 22 (7.3 per season)

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Prediction: 7-9 (49ers Schedule | 49ers Forum)

The 49ers have bought into Mike Singletary's system and philosophy. In fact, remember his well-publicized rant where he said "I'd rather play with 10 people and just get penalized..."? Well, that 11th player (TE Vernon Davis) was named one of the captains of the Niners. While new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye will bring a run-first, run-second philosophy to the offense and that should benefit Frank Gore and Glen Coffee, the Niners still lack playmakers on the outside. They drafted Michael Crabtree to address that area of need, but Crabtree continues to hold out. I wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers win this division, but I still think they are a year away.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .443 winning percentage in 2008 (26th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): at Arizona, at Minnesota, vs Atlanta, at Indianapolis, vs Tennessee, vs Arizona, at Philadelphia

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 19 (6.3 per season)

ST. LOUIS RAMS
Prediction: 4-12 (Rams Schedule | Rams Forum)

The key to the Rams' offensive success lies in the health of running back Steven Jackson. In 2006, Jackson had a combined 2,324 rushing/receiving yards, a combined 16 touchdowns and 90 receptions. But in the past two seasons, Jackson has missed a quarter of each season. With one of the league's weakest receiving corps, Jackson will be the focal point of the offense. Their defense ranked 31st in scoring (29.1 points per game) and 28th in total defense (371.9 yards per game) in 2008. However, new coach Steve Spagnuolo could be the right coach to turn around such a bad defense. Problem is it won't happen this year.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .465 winning percentage in 2008 (22nd)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Minnesota, vs Indianapolis, vs Arizona, at Tennessee, at Arizona

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 13 (4.3 per season)

2009 NFC South Prediction

Here are my picks for the NFC South in 2009:

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Prediction: 10-6 (Saints Schedule | Saints Forum)

The Saints have the league's most explosive offense. Last year, Drew Brees barely missed breaking Dan Marino's single-season passing yards record and became the second quarterback to pass for over 5,000 yards in league history. Brees posted those numbers with his best receiver missing six games of the season, but Marques Colston finished the season strong (31 receptions for 438 yards and four TDs in final five games). They will miss Pierre Thomas in week one, but their week one opponent is Detroit at home. A bigger concern will be Jamaal Brown missing the first six games after having hip surgery. And, of course, Reggie Bush, who has missed 10 games in the past two seasons, is always an injury concern. Last year, their defense ranked 23rd in total defense (339.5 yards per game) and were tied for 26th in scoring defense (24.6 points per game) with Houston. Their defense should improve as they drafted Malcolm Jenkins with their first overall pick, signed safety Darren Sharper in the off-season and named Gregg Williams as their new defensive coordinator.

CAROLINA PANTHERS
Prediction: 9-7 (Panthers Schedule | Panthers Forum)

Last year, the dynamic duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart rushed for a combined 2,351 yards and 28 touchdowns. Stewart, who missed all of the pre-season with an Achilles injury, is ready to go for today's season opener against the Eagles. Steve Smith is an elite NFL receiver, which makes it difficult for opposing defenses to take away the run and the pass. (Of course, Jake Delhomme can sometimes help those defenses.) On defense, the Panthers have a reluctant Julius Peppers back for another year. Peppers, who will earn over $1 million per game as their designated franchise player, had 14.5 sacks last year. The biggest challenge to the defense will be the loss of tackle Maake Kemoeatu, who's out for the year.

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): vs Philadelphia, at Atlanta, at Arizona, vs Atlanta, vs Miami, vs Minnesota, at NY Giants

ATLANTA FALCONS
Prediction: 8-8 (Falcons Schedule | Falcons Forum)

First-year coach Mike Smith, last year's NFL Coach of the Year, and rookie quarterback Matt Ryan, last year's NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, turned this team in disarray into a playoff team in 2008. In the off-season, they added the NFL's all-time leader in receptions at the tight end position in Tony Gonzalez to make the team's offense even more explosive. The Falcons are like the Saints in that they will score a ton of points, but will struggle to stop their opponents. Last year, the Falcons ranked 24th in total defense (347.9 yards per game).

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .588 winning percentage in 2008 (4th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Miami, vs Carolina, at Carolina, at NY Giants, vs Philadelphia

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 22 (7.3 per season)

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Prediction: 5-11 (Bucs Schedule | Bucs Forum)

The Buccaneers are clearly the worst team in this division. They fired their offensive coordinator less than two weeks before the start of the season and will rely on Byron Leftwich to lead the offense until rookie Josh Freeman takes over (either later this year or next year). They still have a solid secondary (important in this division) and defense in general, but they will struggle to put up points.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .580 winning percentage in 2008 (5th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): vs NY Giants, at Philadelphia, vs Carolina, at Miami, at Atlanta, at Carolina, vs Atlanta

2009 NFC North Prediction

Here are my predictions for the NFC North in 2009:

GREEN BAY PACKERS
Prediction: 10-6 (Packers Schedule | Packers Forum)

While the Vikings have the best rushing game and run defense in the NFC North, I think the Packers are the most balanced team in the division. They also have the division's best quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, who played remarkably well in what was the equivalent to his rookie season. The Packers also have talented weapons on offense -- RB Ryan Grant, WR Greg Jennings and WR Donald Driver. Grant wasn't 100 percent to start last season, but he finished strong rushing for over 1,200 yards. He's healthy heading into 2009. The defense should be aggressive under Dom Capers, but they may struggle a bit early in the year as they transition to a 3-4 scheme.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .428 winning percentage in 2008 (30th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Minnesota, vs Minnesota, vs Baltimore, at Pittsburgh, at Arizona

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 27 (9.0 per season)

MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Prediction: 10-6 (Vikings Schedule | Vikings Forum)

With all of the will-he-or-won't-he-unretire drama surrounding Brett Favre this off-season, he eventually signed with the Vikings and was even named one of five co-captains. Provided he stays healthy (a big if), he gives the Vikings better QB play than they would have received from Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson. Adrian Peterson, who is the league's best RB, should benefit from a few less eight-man fronts with the addition of Favre and rookie playmaker Percy Harvin. The defense gets a boost in the first quarter of the season as well. Instead of beginning the season serving four-game suspensions, the Vikings will have both Pat and Kevin Williams for the entire season. But I'm not sold that Favre can stay healthy for the full year and I'm curious to see how either Jackson or Rosenfels performs when/if needed as injury replacements.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .420 winning percentage in 2008 (31st)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Baltimore, at Pittsburgh, at Arizona, at Carolina, vs NY Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 24 (8.0 per season)

CHICAGO BEARS
Prediction: 8-8 (Bears Schedule | Bears Forum)

While the Bears got their man in Jay Cutler, the pressure will be on for him to win. And it's something that he didn't do in Denver (17-20) although that wasn't completely his fault as their defense was awful, too. In Chicago, he will lack the offensive weapons that he had in Denver, but he is reunited with Earl Bennett, his old college teammate. Greg Olsen is one of the league's better tight ends and he should have a great year. Second-year running back Matt Forte was the Bears' workhorse in 2008 and the Bears lost Kevin Jones, his back-up, for this season. Now, they will need Garrett Wolfe and Adrian Peterson to fill the void in order to spell Forte and make sure he doesn't get overworked. The Bears' defense isn't the same defense it was earlier in the decade. Last year, they ranked 21st in total defense (334.7 yards per game) in the NFL.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .414 winning percentage in 2008 (32nd)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): vs Pittsburgh, at Atlanta, vs Arizona, vs Philadelphia, at Minnesota, at Baltimore, vs Minnesota

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 29 (9.7 per season)

DETROIT LIONS
Prediction: 4-12 (Lions Schedule | Lions Forum)

A rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback. Last year, that was a recipe for success (Atlanta and Baltimore). However, don't expect that to happen again. The league's first-ever 0-16 team should be considerably better in 2009, but, of course, it would be impossible for them to be worse. For the future, the team has a strong QB-RB-WR-TE combination with Matthew Stafford (rookie), Kevin Smith (second year), Calvin Johnson (third year) and Brandon Pettigrew (rookie). While Stafford will likely struggle at times as a rookie quarterback, he has all of the tools and intelligence to be a franchise quarterback in the future. The defense is still bad, but their linebacking group with Ernie Sims and newcomers Julian Peterson and Larry Foote is the strength of the defense. And rookie safety Louis Delmas should provide some highlight-reel hits.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .467 winning percentage in 2008 (21st)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Minnesota, vs Pittsburgh, at Minnesota, at Baltimore, vs Arizona

2009 NFC East Prediction

Here are my predictions for the NFC East in 2009:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Prediction: 10-6 (Eagles Schedule | Eagles Forum)

The NFC East is the strongest division from top to bottom. Although the signing of Michael Vick may have dominated the headlines, the team made other off-season moves. They traded for left tackle Jason Peters and signed him to a long-term contract. They also drafted LeSean McCoy as Brian Westbrook's future replacement and receiver Jeremy Maclin, who will give Donovan McNabb another playmaker. However, the team still lacks a true No. 1 receiver, but minus the T.O. days, the Eagles may have their best receiving corps in the McNabb era. Then again, that isn't saying much. In such a physical and talented division, the question will be how their defense reacts to the losses of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson (who passed away), LB Stewart Bradley (season-ending injury) and safety Brian Dawkins (who was released).

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .535 winning percentage in 2008 (9th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Carolina, vs NY Giants, at San Diego, at Atlanta, at NY Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 27 (9.0 per season)

NEW YORK GIANTS
Prediction: 10-6 (Giants Schedule | Giants Forum)

The Giants signed Eli Manning to a contract extension making their franchise quarterback the highest-paid player in the league. While he may not deserve the amount of the contract or put up gaudy passing statistics, he has done what a franchise QB is expected to do -- win football games. The Giants drafted receivers Hakeem Nicks (first round) and Ramses Barden (third round) in this year's draft and they are hoping that Steve Smith, Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon can step up this year. Manning has struggled without Plaxico Burress and one (or the group) of their receivers will need to take a more prominent role in the offense. The strengths of the team (offensive line, defensive line, running game) will allow the Giants to push the Eagles for the division title.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .527 winning percentage in 2008 (10th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): vs Arizona, at Philadelphia, vs San Diego, vs Atlanta, vs Philadelphia, vs Carolina, at Minnesota

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 30 (10.0 per season)

DALLAS COWBOYS
Prediction: 9-7 (Cowboys Schedule | Cowboys Forum)

Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones had always said that chemistry is overrated. However, the 'Boys made several off-season, addition-by-subtraction moves that should improve the team's chemistry. Specifically, Terrell Owens, Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson are no longer on the roster. Wade Phillips, who's unlikely to return as head coach in 2010, will take over defensive coordinator responsibilities. The defense should be solid again in 2009. The biggest questions are (1) can Roy Williams step up as a true No. 1 receiver with T.O. in Buffalo and (2) can Tony Romo lead the team in December and January. In order to truly make the offense "Romo-friendly," the Cowboys need to run, run, run with their three-headed rushing attack of Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. If they rely on their rushing game (and use the passing game as a chance of pace) and defense, they might be able to win more than the seven games predicted by Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .516 winning percentage in 2008 (T11th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): vs NY Giants, vs Carolina, vs Atlanta, at Philadelphia, at NY Giants, vs San Diego, vs Philadelphia

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 31 (10.3 per season)

WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Prediction: 7-9 (Redskins Schedule | Redskins Forum)

The Redskins are the worst team in the NFL's toughest division. In several other divisions, they would be good enough to finish second. They added the $100-million man in Albert Haynesworth to a defense that was solid before him. The biggest question mark is how QB Jason Campbell responds to the off-season rumors that circulated about Washington going after other QBs. They were involved in the Jay Cutler trade sweepstakes with Denver and then reportedly tried to move up in the first round of the draft to get a chance to take Mark Sanchez.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .492 winning percentage in 2008 (16th)

2009 AFC West Prediction

Here are my predictions for the AFC West:

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
Prediction: 11-5 (Chargers Schedule | Chargers Forum)

There isn't a division in football that is more lopsided than this division. I'm certainly not going out on a limb when I say that the Chargers are going to easily run away with the AFC West this year. Last year, nagging injuries slowed LaDainian Tomlinson, who still rushed for over 1,100 yards in a down season. This pre-season, LT played as much as he had in all of his previous pre-seasons combined. That should help get him into a groove sooner than he normally does and I expect a motivated Tomlinson, who restructured his contract to avoid getting cut, to have a bounce-back year. On the defensive side of the ball, they get back LB Shawne "Lights Out" Merriman, who missed the entire 2008 season. The Chargers could have the division clinched by week 12.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .484 winning percentage in 2008 (T17th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): vs Baltimore, vs Miami, at Pittsburgh, at NY Giants, vs Philadelphia, at Tennessee

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 34 (11.3 per season)

OAKLAND RAIDERS
Prediction: 6-10 (Raiders Schedule | Raiders Forum)

For six straight seasons, the Raiders have lost 11 games or more. But they enter 2009 with a two-game winning streak and they should be better than they have been over the last half decade. Coach Tom Cable is working towards instilling a toughness -- (insert jaw-breaking joke here) -- into the Raiders' organization. While Al Davis is still making questionable moves, e.g., drafting Darrius Heyward-Bey with the seventh-overall pick, I expect the Raiders to be the second-best team in the AFC West in 2009. Most recently, they added defensive lineman Richard Seymour after sending their first-round pick to New England and that will help in the immediate term.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .480 winning percentage in 2008 (T19th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): vs San Diego, at NY Giants, vs Philadelphia, at San Diego, at Pittsburgh, vs Baltimore

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 11 (3.7 per season)

DENVER BRONCOS
Prediction: 5-11 (Broncos Schedule | Broncos Forum)

The Broncos had the most tumultous off-season in this division by firing its long-time coach and by trading away its franchise quarterback to the Chicago Bears. And then there's the cry-baby receiver who was suspended until a week ago for conduct detrimental to the team. But Brandon Marshall is still on the team (despite his trade requests) and has a reason (his desire for a lucrative contract next off-season) to be motivated and not be a distraction. Eddie Royal is one of the league's better No. 2 receivers, the Broncos' offensive line is one of the best in the NFL and they drafted RB Knowshon Moreno in the first round. Moreno was the team's first running back drafted in the first round since Steven Sewell in 1985. But they downgraded at quarterback and their defense, which is transitioning from a 4-3 to 3-4 defense under defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, is still a weakness. The Broncos schedule starts off relatively easy (Cincinnati, Cleveland and Oakland), but then gets very tough over the next 10 games.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .480 winning percentage in 2008 (T19th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): at San Diego, at Baltimore, vs San Diego, vs NY Giants, at Indianapolis, at Philadelphia

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 24 (8.0 per season)

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
Prediction: 4-12 (Chiefs Schedule | Chiefs Forum)

The Chiefs have a new general manager and a new head coach in Scott Pioli and Todd Haley, respectively. Pioli was the VP of Player Personnel for the Patriots before joining the Chiefs and he was named the NFL Excecutive of the Year multiple times by various sources. And ESPN named him the Personnel Man of the Decade. But the Chiefs enter 2009 with a little bit of controversy as well. They started a mini-trend and fired their offensive coordinator two weeks ago. (The Bucs and Bills followed suit.) Receiver Dwayne Bowe is talented -- and a bit lazy which had him on the team's second team -- but the team's offense lost All-World TE Tony Gonzalez, which means Bowe will get more attention from opposing defenses. In general, the team lacks playmakers to take some pressure off Bowe. I believe that Pioli and Haley will ultimately assemble a team that looks more like the Patriots than this team currently does. It just won't happen this year.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .484 winning percentage in 2008 (T17th)

Polamalu has MCL sprain, out 3-6 weeks, per Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans kicked off the NFL season with an overtime thriller. In the first (and only) series of overtime, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger led the Steelers on a five-play scoring drive that was capped by a 33-yard field goal from Jeff Reed.

However, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who was all other the field in the first half, suffered an MCL sprain and he will miss 3-6 weeks, per coach Mike Tomlin (via James Walker of ESPN).

The Steelers have six games between now and their bye week, as follows: at Chicago, at Cincinnati, vs San Diego, at Detroit, vs Cleveland and vs Minnesota.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 1

Last year, I picked 63.3% of games correctly against the spread (ATS). And our group of five handicappers collectively picked 57% of games ATS correctly. None of us finished below 50%. Of course, picks are for entertainment purposes only and they will remain free despite our success.

That being said, last year no longer matters as the 2009 season begins in less than 24 hours.

We will continue to use last year's format of picking three best games every week. Here are my three picks for the week 1 slate of NFL games:

Vikings -4 (over Browns): Was Christmas changed to September 13th and nobody told me? The oddsmakers have given us a gift with this line. Although we finally know that the Browns will start Brady Quinn (over Derek Anderson) at quarterback, does it really matter? The Browns offense hasn't scored a touchdown since November 17th and they start the 2009 season facing one of the league's best defenses. Despite having Shawn Rogers on the defensive line, the Browns rush defense allowed 151.9 rushing yards per game (5th-worst) last year. The Vikings finished 2008 with the 5th-best rushing offense (145.8 yards per game) and the league's most stout rushing defense (76.9 yards per game).

Packers -3 1/2 (over Bears): In my opinion, the Packers are the best team in the NFC North although the Bears (and Vikings) are close behind. Compared to the Bears, the Packers have a much more balanced offense with Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Ryan Grant. Last year, the Packers ranked fifth in the NFL in scoring offense (26.2 points per game) and eighth in total offense (351.1 yards per game) despite Rodgers being a first-year starter and a slow start by Grant. This year, Grant enters 2009 healthy and Rodgers enters the season with a year as starter under his belt and without the Brett Favre circus in Green Bay (at least this week).

Ravens -13 (over Chiefs): While I generally steer clear of double-digit spreads, the Ravens are clearly 13 points better than the Chiefs. In fact, they may be 20 points better. The Chiefs struggle stopping what the Ravens love to do: running the football. Last year, the Ravens led the NFL in rushing attempts with 37 per game. The Ravens ranked fourth in rushing yards while the Chiefs ranked third worst in rushing defense. But the Chiefs stop the pass nearly as poorly as they stop the run and Joe Flacco has looked very sharp in the pre-season. In a way, this is almost like extending the pre-season an extra week for the Ravens.

2009 AFC South Prediction

Before tomorrow night's season opener between the Steelers and Titans, we will project the final standings and team records for all eight divisions as well as our post-season picks. Let's continue with the AFC South.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Prediction: 10-6 (Colts Schedule | Colts Forum)

The Colts enter the post-Tony Dungy era with a six-season streak of 12+ wins. However, new coach Jim Caldwell has been Peyton Manning's quarterbacks coach under Dungy since 2002. The Colts also lost the team's all-time receiver Marvin Harrison, who was released after not agreeing to a restructured contract. But they drafted RB Donald Brown (first round) and WR Austin Collie (fourth round) in this year's draft. With durability concerns for Joseph Addai, the incumbent starter at RB, the addition of Brown will either keep Addai fresh by reducing his workload or provide the Colts with protection should he miss a lot of time. Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark form one of the league's top WR-WR-TE trios. Two big concerns for the upcoming season are the offensive line's ability to protect Manning and the health of safety Bob Sanders, who has played more than six games in only two of his five seasons. Sanders' status for week one is still unclear.

TENNESSEE TITANS
Prediction: 10-6 (Titans Schedule | Titans Forum)

While the Colts begin the Jim Caldwell era, Titans coach Jeff Fisher is the longest-tenured coach with one team. He has been the coach of the Oilers/Titans since 1994. In the off-season, the Titans lost defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who signed a $100 million contract with Washington, via free agency. Yet our good friends over at Xtreme Titans argue that the defensive line will be just fine under defensive line coach Jim Washburn. The offense has lacked firepower at the receiver position, but the Titans added Nate Washington via free agency and drafted Rutgers rookie Kenny Britt in the first round.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .508 winning percentage in 2008 (14th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): at Pittsburgh, vs Indianapolis, vs Arizona, at Indianapolis, vs Miami, vs San Diego

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 31 (10.3 per season)

HOUSTON TEXANS
Prediction: 9-7 (Texans Schedule | Texans Forum)

The Texans have never had a winning season. That is, until 2009. The Texans nearly had a winning season in 2009, but Sage Rosenfels happened. With five minutes to go and a 27-10 lead over the Colts, the Texans (specifically Sage Rosenfels) allowed the Colts to come back and win the game. Rosenfels is now in Minnesota, but the Texans have brought in some other less-than-capable back-ups in Dan Orlovsky and Rex Grossman. Provided Matt Schaub can stay healthy in 2009, the Texans will have a high-powered offense with Steve Slaton, Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels. And defensive end Mario Williams continues to prove Charlie Casserle correct for drafting him over Reggie Bush and Vince Young with the first overall pick in 2006.

Prediction: 6-10 (Jaguars Schedule | Jaguars Forum)

The Jaguars were decimated with injuries on the offensive line in 2008. In the off-season, they signed Tra Thomas and drafted Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton with their first two draft picks. Their offensive line should be one of the team strengths this year. And Maurice Jones-Drew will take over as the full-time back now that Fred Taylor was released (and signed by New England). Even in a back-up, platoon role, MJD scored a combined 40 rushing and receiving touchdowns in his three NFL seasons. That ranks second in the NFL behind only LaDainian Tomlinson. However, the Jaguars still lack a big-time receiver. With three strong competitors in the division, it will be too difficult for the Jags to finish with a winning record.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .516 winning percentage in 2008 (T11th)

2009 AFC North Prediction

Before Thursday's season opener, we will project the final standings and team records for all eight divisions as well as our post-season picks. Let's continue with the AFC North.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Prediction: 11-5 (Steelers Schedule | Steelers Forum)

The defending Super Bowl champions had the league's top-rated scoring defense (13.9 points per game) and total defense (237.2 yards per game) in 2008. And the defense will be one of the best again in 2009. On offense, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is one of the toughest and most clutch QBs in the NFL. Yet the Steelers' poor offensive line play and Big Ben's propensity to try to keep the play alive made him the second-most sacked quarterback in the league last year for the second season in a row. He was the fourth-most sacked QB in 2006. While I consider the Ravens to be the Steelers' equals, the Steelers have a more favorable schedule in 2009 in an ironic twist of the NFL's scheduling policy to create parity. All AFC North teams play six games against division rivals and eight games against AFC West and NFC North teams this year. The other two games are based on division finish last year. The division winners the Steelers face are Miami and Tennessee. The Ravens, on the other hand, face the Patriots and Colts, who both finished second last year. I'd rather face the Dolphins and Titans over the Patriots and Colts.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .434 winning percentage in 2008 (29th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Tennessee, vs San Diego, vs Minnesota, at Baltimore, vs Baltimore, at Miami

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 30 (10.0 per season)

BALTIMORE RAVENS
Prediction:10-6 (Ravens Schedule | Ravens Forum)

Coach John Harbaugh, QB Joe Flacco and (now first-team) RB Ray Rice are entering their sophomore seasons with the Ravens. The Ravens led the NFL in rushing attempts with 37 carries per game in 2008 and that shouldn't change in 2009. However, the allocation of carries will definitely change. Rice -- not Le'Ron McClain -- will lead this team in attempts. But the team lacks a big-time playmaker in the receiving corps to make Flacco an elite quarterback in 2009. That being said, Flacco has looked comfortable in the offense and sharp during the pre-season and he has the big arm, poise and moxy to take the next step forward in his development. As noted above, the Ravens face the Patriots and Colts, who both finished second last year, while the Steelers face the Dolphins and Titans, who both won their divisions. As close as these two teams are in talent and philosophy, that scheduling difference (less favorable for the Ravens) will be the deciding factor in who wins (and doesn't win) the division in 2009.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .438 winning percentage in 2008 (28th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at San Diego, at Minnesota, vs Indianapolis, vs Pittsburgh, at Pittsburgh

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 29 (9.7 per season)

CINCINNATI BENGALS
Prediction: 7-9 (Bengals Schedule | Bengals Forum)

The Bengals finished 2008 strong with wins in their final three games of the regular season against (even) weak(er) competition. That being said, wins don't come cheaply in the NFL. In addition to that positive momentum, the Bengals have a healthy (minus ankle) Carson Palmer back at quarterback and a refocused Chad Ochocinco. They get Keith Rivers, their first-round pick in 2008, back from a broken jaw and they drafted Rey Maualuga, who many projected as mid-first-round pick, in the second round this year to lead their receiving corps. The defense, which ranked 12th in the league last year, could be better this year and the offense, which ranked last in the league, will certainly be better provided their skill players stay healthy. The problem is they play in the same division as the Steelers and Ravens.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .465 winning percentage in 2008 (22nd)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): vs Pittsburgh, at Baltimore, vs Baltimore, at Pittsburgh, at Minnesota, at San Diego

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 19 (6.3 per season)

CLEVELAND BROWNS
Prediction: 4-12 (Browns Schedule | Browns Forum)

Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson? Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn? While coach Eric Mangini says he knows who will be the team's starting QB, he won't tip his hand and share the information with the public. However, what we do know is that the Browns suck. Their offense hasn't scored a touchdown since November 17th. And their offense has lost Kellen Winslow, who was traded to Tampa Bay, and Jamal Lewis is on the decline. Braylon Edwards broke out in 2007 and then broke down in 2008 while leading the league in drops. James Davis is a nice sleeper pick in fantasy football and Joshua Cribbs is an underrated do-it-all, but he is frustrated by his lack of a new contract. Any way you slice it, it's going to be a disappointing season (again) in Cleveland.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .449 winning percentage in 2008 (25th)

2009 AFC East Prediction

Over the next two days, we will project the final standings and team records for all eight divisions as well as our post-season picks. We'll begin with the AFC East.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Prediction: 12-4 (Patriots Schedule | Patriots Forum)

The Patriots missed the playoffs last year as many predicted after the Pats had lost Tom Brady to a season-ending knee injury in the first half of the first game of the season. Yet the Patriots barely missed the post-season with an 11-5 record (the same record as the division-winning Miami Dolphins) even if that is five fewer wins than they had with Brady at the helm in 2007. Although they had a scare in the third pre-season game when Washington's Albert Haynesworth landed on his shoulder, Brady looked like his 2007 self when he hit Randy Moss on two touchdown passes in the first half. In 2008, the Patriots finished fourth in the NFL in rushing TDs (21) and sixth in rushing yards (2278). They finished ranked eighth in the NFL in scoring defense (19.3 ppg) and tenth in total defense (309.0) last year. Although they've traded Richard Seymour to Oakland over Labor Day weekend, it's hard to imagine that the balanced, well-coached Patriots team will win fewer games than they did in 2008 now that they have a healthy Tom Brady.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .590 winning percentage in 2008 (3rd)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): vs Atlanta, vs Baltimore, vs Tennessee, vs Miami, at Indianapolis, at Miami, vs Carolina

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 39 (13.0 per season)

BUFFALO BILLS
Prediction: 8-8 (Bills Schedule | Bills Forum)

Last pre-season, Bills safety Donte Whitner made a pre-season guarantee that the Bills would make the playoffs. After a 5-1 start to the 2008 season, however, the Bills lost seven of their next eight games. During their first six games, QB Trent Edwards threw five touchdowns and only two interceptions. In the next four games (all losses), Edwards threw three touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Bills, who enter the 2009 season in the most disarray of any team in the division, need a consistent Trent Edwards to make a playoff push. Running back Marshawn Lynch is suspended for the first three games of the season, they fired Turk Schonert, their offensive coordinator, last week and head coach Dick Jauron is on the hot seat. Plus they added the explosive (on and off the field) receiver Terrell Owens in the off-season. If the Bills are fighting for a playoff spot down the stretch, keep in mind that the Bills finish the season with three tough opponents -- Patriots (home), Falcons (road) and Colts (home).

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .570 winning percentage in 2008 (6th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Miami, at Carolina, at Tennessee, vs Miami, at Atlanta, vs Indianapolis

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 21 (7.0 per season)

MIAMI DOLPHINS
Prediction: 7-9 (Dolphins Schedule | Dolphins Forum)

Bill Parcells, Dolphins VP of Football Operations, and first-year head coach Tony Sparano inherited a team that finished 1-15 the year before they took over. In an amazing turnaround, they managed to win the division in 2008. While doing the unexpected, the Dolphins led the NFL in turnover differential (+17) last year and were remarkably healthy. The Dolphins may even be better in 2009, but I don't expect all the breaks to go in their favor in 2009. They have the league's toughest schedule (as measured by their opponents' winning percentage last year) and start their season in Atlanta, against Indianapolis and in San Diego. They are likely to be the underdogs in all three of those games. Then four of their next five games are division foes. The non-division opponent during that span is New Orleans, who expect to win the NFC South in 2009.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .594 winning percentage in 2008 (1st)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): at Atlanta, vs Indianapolis, at San Diego, at Carolina, at Tennessee, vs Pittsburgh

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 18 (6.0 per season)

NEW YORK JETS
Prediction: 6-10 (Jets Schedule | Jets Forum)

I like new coach Rex Ryan's swagger. And, whether you like him or not, his press conferences are entertaining. After all, what other coach would say that he won't "kiss the rings" of another coach or that he "walked over tougher guys" than his new rival's middle linebacker? And the teammates of first-round rookie QB Mark Sanchez say he has the "it" factor and natural leadership. But have you looked at the start to the Jets schedule? In their first five games, they go on the road to play the Texans, Saints and Dolphins and they play the Patriots and Titans at home. The Jets' defense will be solid, but it's unrealistic for a rookie quarterback on a team with a weak receiving corps to score a lot of points. Then again, Ryan went to the AFC Championship game with a strong defensive team that had a rookie quarterback and weak receiving corps as the Ravens defensive coordinator last year.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .568 winning percentage in 2008 (7th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Tennessee, at Miami, vs Carolina, vs Atlanta, at Indianapolis

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 23 (7.7 per season)

We will predict the AFC North next.

The Monday Blitz

Giants GM Jerry Reese thinks this year's Giants team is better than the 2007 Super Bowl winners and the 2008 12-win teams.

The Eagles have re-signed receiver Danny Amendola to their practice squad.

The Steelers have signed defensive back Tuff Harris, who was cut by the Tennessee Titans, to their practice squad.

Speaking of Dolphins nose tackle Paul Soliai, coach Tony Sparano said: "His weight loss is critical to how he is playing right now."

The Seahawks have added RB Devin Moore and have added Mike Hass to their practice squad.

Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin didn't practice today due to a sore hamstring.

The Falcons have released safety Jamaal Fudge.

Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce was excused from today's practice due to personal reasons.

Titans RB LenDale White says of the Steelers' terrible towel: "If it happens to be there, I'm going to stomp all over that (pause), man. If there's a towel in the stands, I will stomp on it. I don't care who gets mad. ... If they throw a towel at me, I'm going to kick it and stomp all over it. If they don't want their towel stomped on, keep it out my face."

Bengals rookie Rey Maualuga will start at linebacker against the Broncos.

FYI: You can follow us on Twitter @EDSFootball and on Facebook's Networked Blogs.

Browns coach Eric Mangini says he has picked the starting QB, but he's going to keep it a secret.

Packers back-up QB Matt Flynn says he'll be ready for Sunday's game, if needed.

Broncos rookie tight end Richard Quinn was arrested Monday on charges related to domestic violence.

Browns receiver/special teams player Josh Cribbs said of his status for Sunday: "I can't tell you what I'm going to do. I really can't tell you. I can tell you hopefully I'll be out there. I want to be out there. I anticipate being out there, and that's about it."

Cable on Seymour deal: "There are some issues still"

Per David White of the San Francisco Chronicle, Raiders coach Tom Cable says the deal that will send the Raiders' 2011 first-round pick to New England for defensive lineman Richard Seymour hasn't been finalized yet.

"We have attempted to make a deal," Cable said. "There are some issues still between him and the Patriots that are being worked out. Hoping that that will get resolved as quickly as possible. We know that the player wants to be here but we have really no control over those issues. So that's really all I'm going to talk about it for now."

According to White, Cable wouldn't specify what needs to be resolved. However, Patriots spokesman Stacey James is unaware of any issues around the deal, per the Associated Press.

It seems as though it's business as usual in Oakland.

The Raiders open the season on Monday, September 14th against the San Diego Chargers in the second of two opening-week Monday Night games. Seymour's former (current) team will host the Bills in the first Monday Night game.

Marshall back at practice, can he stay focused?

As the season opener against the Bengals approaches this Sunday, it appears unlikely that Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall will get his wish and be traded out of Denver.

And with his team-imposed suspension is over, Marshall returned to the practice field yesterday.

Marshall, who will earn $2.2 million in the final year of his contract, wants a new deal.

However, his production on the field (back-to-back 100-reception seasons) has been overshadowed by his character issues and transgressions off the field. So, in other words, he's not getting an extension or new deal from the Broncos any time soon.

Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post believes that if Marshall wants a lucrative contract when he becomes a free agent after the season ends, he'll need to put aside his unhappiness for the next 17 weeks and not be a disruptive force.

But that's easier to do when the team is winning.

Therefore, a fast start for the Broncos is critical. Fortunately, the Broncos start the season against three (relatively speaking) easier opponents: Cincinnati, Cleveland and Oakland.

If the Broncos lose two games during that span, it could get really ugly for the team as their next eight opponents are all teams with eight-plus wins in 2008.

So, let's say the Broncos are 3-8 (or 4-7) after 11 games and frustrations are high for all parties, the Marshall-McDaniels-Denver situation could really hit rock bottom. At that point, McDaniels and the Broncos wouldn't have much to lose (except for more games) by suspending Marshall again for conduct detrimental to the team if he allows himself to lose focus.

Even if Marshall does the right things over the first half of the season, his margin of error or McDaniels' level of tolerance might become smaller in the second half of the season.

Cadillac Williams tops Bucs' depth chart

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers added a 1,000-yard rusher in the off-season. Yet he's not their starter to enter the season.

Instead, according to the Bucs' updated depth chart (via Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times), the running back to enter the season as their starter had only 233 yards in six games played last year.

The Bucs' depth chart at running back is as follows: (1) Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, (2) Derrick Ward and (3) Earnest Graham.

According to Holder, coach Raheem Morris says that the Bucs will continue to employ the "2-2-1" strategy they used in the third pre-season game when the season starts. So, in other words, Williams will be the running back for the first two series, then Ward for the next two series and Graham for the fifth series. And then they will repeat the rotation.

Although Williams has played only ten games in the past two seasons, but he ran strong in his only pre-season game.

Provided that all three backs stay healthy, it looks like all three will be mediocre (at best) fantasy options considering none of the three backs should get much more than 40 percent of the team's carries under their 2-2-1 platoon. And Graham, who will get the fewest carries, will likely get the goalline touches.

The Sunday Blitz

Per Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles left tackle Jason Peters is eager to prove the world that the Eagles were right to give up three draft picks for -- and give a monster contract extension to -- Peters.

The Panthers have claimed RB Tyrell Sutton off waivers from Green Bay and DT Ra'Shon Harris from Pittsburgh to fill out their 53-man roster.

The Steelers signed rookie running back Isaac Redman, after he cleared waivers, to their eight-man practice squad, per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette.

The Lions have claimed cornerback Marcus McCauley, who was waived by the Vikings yesterday.

The Cowboys claimed Marvin White, who was waived by Cincinnati, and Cleveland claimed DeAngelo Smith, who was waived by Dallas.

Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson ended his holdout and signed his one-year franchise tender.

The Bengals' practice squad is complete.

The Colts signed safety Aaron Francisco, who was cut by the Cardinals, to a one-year, $620,000 contract.

San Francisco signed seven players -- Kory Sheets, J.J. Finley, Alex Boone, Dominique Zeigler, Dobson Collins, Brit Miller, and Khalif Mitchell -- to its practice squad.

The Titans re-signed seven players they cut to their practice squad.

The Colts announced today that they claimed rookie linebacker Cody Glenn off waivers from the Washington Redskins, and in turn, waived safety Matt Giordano.

Mike Lupica of the NY Daily News latest column: "Giants coach Tom Coughlin is the man all other New York coaches want to be."

Coach Raheem Morris confirms that rookie QB Josh Freeman is now number two on the Bucs' depth chart.

The Lions claimed return man Yamon Figurs, who was waived by the Ravens.

The Dolphins claimed tight end Davone Drew off waivers from the Ravens and waived tight end David Thomas.

The Patriots have signed guard Kendall Simmons, who was released by the Steelers.

The Bucs have claimed defensive end Maurice Evans off waivers from the Giants and cornerback William Middleton off waivers from the Falcons today.

Isaiah Stanback, who was cut by the Cowboys on Saturday, was signed to the Patriots' practice squad.

The Saints added QB Chase Daniel, who was cut by the Redskins yesterday, to their practice squad.

After cutting QB Brian Brohm yesterday, the Packers signed him to their practice squad today.

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew doesn't let stardom interfere with his focus and unassuming demeanor.

The Vikings have re-signed QB John David Booty (to their practice squad).

Over at Sixers Court, I posted my fantasy preview for Andre Iguodala. Over the next couple of weeks, I will fantasy previews for all Sixers' players.

Merriman arrested for choking Tila Tequila

Chargers linebacker Shawne "Lights Out" Merriman was arrested early this morning for allegedly choking his girlfriend Tila Tequila, per Craig Gustafson of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Tequila, who had an MTV reality show "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila," signed a citizen's arrest warrant claiming battery and false imprisonment.

While legal concerns certainly outweigh football concerns, Merriman, who missed all of last year with a knee injury, is in a contract year. And, obviously, this incident puts his status for the season in jeopardy.

But as Pro Football Talk points out, Merriman is a first offender so he may not face team and/or league discipline until after this runs its course through the legal system.

That being said, the Chargers were the clear-cut favorites to win the AFC West this year. But if their best players shoot themselves in the foot (not literally, like Plaxico Burress), who knows?

Maybe the Raiders (who added Richard Seymour today) could sneak up on the Chargers -- and then sucker punch them in the jaw.

Patriots trade Seymour to Raiders for first-rounder

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Patriots have traded defensive lineman Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders for a first-round pick in 2011.

The five-time Pro Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion will turn 30 years old in one month.

Seymour, the Patriots' first-round pick in 2001, is under contract through the 2010 season.

Unfortunately for Seymour, he goes from what's arguably the best-run franchise to what's arguably the worst-run franchise.

Bucs trade McCown to Jags for undisclosed pick

Earlier in the week, reports were that Raheem Morris and the Bucs' coaching staff were considering keeping four quarterbacks on their roster.

Instead, they traded Josh McCown to the Jacksonville Jaguars for an undisclosed draft pick in 2010. The other three quarterbacks are starter Byron Leftwich, first-round rookie Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson.

"I've been around the business long enough to know how it works,'' McCown said, per Roy Cummings of The Tampa Tribune. "When you have a first-round pick waiting in the wings, you want to get him on the field. I understand that and that's fine.

"I really don't have any problems with it. I mean, I've known (Coach) Raheem (Morris) and (General Manager) Mark (Dominik) for a long time, and they were nothing but fair with me.

"They gave me a chance to win the starter's job, really gave me my first opportunity to compete for a starting position in six years in this league and for that I'm thankful.''

McCown will back-up David Garrard in Jacksonville. The team's other quarterback is Todd Bouman.

Bradford has shoulder sprain, BYU upsets OU

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, according to Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News.

Bradford, who is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is scheduled for an MRI Monday, at which point the degree of his sprain will be determined.

The third-ranked Sooners were 22-point favorites over BYU, but the Cougars upset the Sooners 14-13.

"We just beat the No. 3 team in the country," said [BYU] quarterback Max Hall, per Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune. "It's just unbelievable. It's a special moment I will never forget. None of us will."

This was BYU's first win over a ranked opponent in 13 attempts, according to Drew.

Oklahoma plays Idaho State next Saturday and Tulsa on September 19th. Then they don't play again until October 3rd when they play Miami (FL).

In Bradford's absence in the second half, freshman QB Landry Jones completed six of 12 passes for 51 yards.

Raiders cut Jeff Garcia, where next?

Among the cuts made to reduce their roster to 53 players, the Oakland Raiders have released quarterback Jeff Garcia, who was signed in the off-season to back-up JaMarcus Russell.

In a conference call, Raiders coach Tom Cable was asked why the team cut Garcia.

Here's what Cable said (via Paul Gutierrez of the Sacramento Bee): "I think first and foremost, we are committed to JaMarcus Russell as our starter. I think that when you look at the preseason, and practices in camp, and the games, that we played, all four of the games, three of the four which Bruce and Charlie played, and they probably were the most productive in terms of scoring points and moving the football team. I think that the fact that whether or not he's comfortable in his role as a backup, it is what it is. JaMarcus is our guy and those other two guys did a great job in terms of performing on game night."

Garcia was brought in to mentor and push Russell, the top overall draft pick in 2007, but Garcia wanted to compete for the starting job. But there was no way that the Raiders (and specifically Al Davis) would have allowed to Garcia to win the starting job.

One place that comes to mind as a potential landing spot for Garcia is New England, who only have two quarterbacks -- Tom Brady and undrafted rookie Brian Hoyle -- on their roster.

Links to all 32 NFL team final roster cuts

At 6 p.m. ET tonight, NFL teams were required to make their final cuts to reduce their roster from 75 players to 53 players.

Here are links to lists of cuts (or to the final 53-man roster) for all 32 NFL teams:

AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
AFC South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
AFC West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers

NFC East: Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins
NFC North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
NFC South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
NFC West: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams

I will add links to the Colts' and Jaguars' cuts and/or 53-man rosters once I find links to them. [Links updated above]

Colt Brennan to IR, Chase Daniel cut

The Washington Redskins have placed Colt Brennan on injured reserve (IR), which will end his season, with an assortment of injuries (hamstring, hip and knee), per Jason Reid of the Washington Post.

With Brennan on IR, it appeared that rookie quarterback Chase Daniel would be the team's third quarterback behind starter Jason Campbell and Todd Collins.

Instead the Redskins cut Chase Daniel, who threw for 12,515 during his four-year college career at Missouri.

Brennan, the team's third of three sixth-round picks last year, struggled in the pre-season's first three games throwing three interceptions in those games. He was 10 of 14 with no picks in the fourth pre-season game.

Bills cut Dominic Rhodes

In a surprising move, the Buffalo Bills have cut running back Dominic Rhodes, according to the Associated Press.

Marshawn Lynch, last year's starting running back, will begin the 2009 season serving a three-game suspension. Although Fred Jackson will start will Lynch is out, Rhodes was expected to be Jackson's back-up.

Without Rhodes on the roster and with Lynch suspended, the Bills have only Jackson and Xavier Omon on their roster as experienced running backs eligible to play against the Patriots on September 14th.

Rhodes, who was due to make $750,000 this year, had 538 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns in 2008 for the Colts. He also caught 45 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

Are the Jets interested in Sinorice Moss?

The Jets have made their cuts to get down to their 53-man roster, which Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News lists here.

On the list are three receivers: Britt Davis and Marcus Henry were waived and Aundrae Allison was placed on Injured Reserve (IR).

Although the Giants kept receiver Sinorice Moss on the roster along with six other receivers, there are rumors that the Giants may be looking to trade a receiver. As Cimini points out, the Jets, who were interested in Moss out of college, might have some interest in making a play for Moss.

Moss, who was the Giants' second-round pick in 2006, was frustrated when he was hardly played against the Jets in week three. In their final pre-season game, Moss had two receptions for two scores.

In ten games last year, Moss had 12 receptions for 153 yards and two scores.

Bears to stick with RBs on roster despite losing Jones for season

With the Bears losing running back Kevin Jones for the season with a torn ligament in his ankle, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the Bears will stick with the running backs currently on their roster instead of pursuing another back.

So, that means that both Garrett Wolfe and Adrian Peterson will need to step up.

Jones was expected to back up starter Matt Forte and to take on an expanded role from what he had last year.

"We were anxious to give him a lot of carries and see where he was,'' offensive coordinator Ron Turner said. "I feel bad for him. He's had a good training camp and I know he was looking forward to getting a chance to make some plays and was excited about playing. You hate to see it.''

Last year, Forte participated in 84 percent of the team's offensive snaps, which was the highest percentage for any back in the league.

"It's tough,'' Forte said. "A.P. has been playing, this is his eighth year, he knows what he's doing too. We've got Garrett too. We don't have any issues with that. We're real confident with both of them getting in the game.''

Last year, Jones had 34 carries for 109 yards, Peterson had 20 carries for 100 yards and Wolfe had 15 carries for 69 yards.

Giants cut David Tyree

The New York Giants have released the player that arguably made the greatest play in team and NFL history.

Per Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Giants have released wide receiver David Tyree.

"He's obviously disappointed, but we're confident someone else will see the value he brings on special teams and as a wide receiver," Michael Clouser, Tyree's agent, told Garafolo. " We'll see how things go here in the next few days."

Tyree, the Giants' sixth-round pick in 2003, spent all of last year on injured reserve. In 2007, he had only four receptions for 35 yards over 12 games.

Kevin Kolb is #2 on depth chart (for now)

Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb will begin the season as the team's second quarterback behind starter Donovan McNabb, per Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News.

However, coach Andy Reid said that "it depends on how we work the roster on game day."

Earlier in the week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reduced the length of Michael Vick's suspension to two regular-season games.

As Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, it would make sense to make Vick the team's second quarterback and Kolb the team's third quarterback after Vick serves out his suspension.

The NFL allows teams to dress a third/emergency quarterback as a 46th player. However, if the third quarterback enters the game, the first two quarterbacks are no longer allowed to play (at any position).

So, if the week three QB depth chart read McNabb, Kolb and Vick, the Eagles wouldn't be allowed to play McNabb or Kolb if Vick took a snap from center.

"I haven't talked to Andy at all about it. I would hope that their plan was to have me as the No. 2 guy, if something was to happen to 'five.' But again, whatever's best for the team . . . I want to be out there, and I want to have a chance to play if something was to happen," Kolb said.

There is a good chance that last year's emergency quarterback A.J. Feeley will be cut today. As teams reduce their rosters to 53 (from 75), the deadline to make those cuts is this afternoon.

Saints TE Billy Miller lost for year?

Saints tight end Billy Miller will have surgery for a torn Achilles tendon as soon as Monday, which should sideline him for the season, according to the Associated Press.

Miller suffered the injury in the Saints final game of the pre-season against the Miami Dolphins.

"I think it's an opportunity to get completely healthy," Miller said. "I was battling a knee and now I've got this. I'll take care of what needs to be taken care of and come back to help this team win back-to-back Super Bowls."

"The reason you get so emotional is because you see how much he means to the team with all the guys that go up to him and are feeling for him," [QB Drew] Brees said. "Your heart goes out to him. You almost say 'You wish it was me and not him.' If there's one guy that did not deserve that to happen to, that was him. I'm very confident Billy Miller is going to come back and play football again and he's going to play for the Saints."

Miller, who is 32 years old, had 45 receptions for 579 yards and one touchdown last season.

Calvin Pace to train with Randy Couture

While serving his four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, Jets linebacker Calvin Pace plans to train MMA with Randy Couture, according to Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News.

The purpose of the training is to get in fighting shape without doing any actual fighting. Pace compares the physical aspect and conditioning of MMA to being the closest thing to football.

"The reason why I'm doing MMA is it's probably the closest thing you can find to football as far as conditioning, cardiovascular and the physical aspect," Pace said. "I'm not going to be fighting and I'm not going to be getting hit. I'm just going to be training my behind off."

Pace is eligible to return to the Jets after they play the Saints on October 4th. He will miss games against four solid opponents -- Houston, New England, Tennessee and New Orleans. His first game will be against Miami on Monday, October 12th. (See full Jets' schedule)

The Jets will need to count on Vernon Gholston, last year's first-round pick, to step up during Pace's absence. But Gholston followed up a disappointing 2008 with a disappointing 2009 pre-season.

No rotation for Parker and Mendenhall?

Super Bowl XLIII

Who am I to question the coach of the defending Super Bowl champions?

But with running backs taking the pounding the way they do, doesn't it make sense for the Steelers to split carries between Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall?

Not according to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

"Willie Parker's our runner," Tomlin said (via Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review). "Rashard's done a nice job and he's going to get an opportunity to get his touches, but more important than anything else, Willie Parker is our runner."

According to The Sporting News, via Yahoo!, Mendenhall said: "With the game today and how it's played, you need more than one running back. There's a lot of two-, three-back systems. The nature of the game, how physical it is, and how violent it is, to have a couple guys that can be fresh and produce, that helps the offense."

Both Parker and Mendenhall, the Steelers' first-round pick last year, missed significant time last year. Parker played in 11 games and Mendenhall fractured his shoulder after four games.

To me, a 60-40 split would make sense and perhaps keep both running backs healthy and/or fresh for the full season and playoffs. Since they won't start out in a "rotation," I would expect Mendenhall to earn a larger share of the carries as the season progresses regardless of what Tomlin says today.

Carriker to have shoulder surgery

Rams defensive tackle Adam Carriker has a "significant shoulder injury," which will require surgery, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"It is a significant shoulder injury," [Rams coach Steve] Spagnuolo said. "We're still in the process of determining which way to go, how long it's going to be, and navigate through that. So we won't really have a final decision on Adam until (today)."

Per Thomas, this injury isn't to the same shoulder on which Carriker had surgery for a torn labrum in 2007.

As Thomas points out, there are five defensive tackles competing for what will likely be four roster spots. The others are Clifton Ryan, Gary Gibson, Hollis Thomas and rookie Darell Scott. Final cuts are required by 6 p.m. today.

Carriker, who was the team's first-round pick (13th overall) in 2007, had 23 tackles in 15 games last year.

[Update: Carriker is going to be placed on Injured Reserve, which will end his season.]

Giants lose Jay Alford for the season

Giants defensive tackle and long snapper Jay Alford had season-ending surgery today and the Giants will place him on Injured Reserve tomorrow, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

I think Jay at first was down, because he really had a good spring and fall,” [Giants coach Tom] Coughlin said. “It’s a shame, a young guy that worked his tail off like that, to have his season taken away. At the same point it’s a learning experience. I’m hoping his morale comes back up, if you will. The challenge, obviously, as it is to all players that have to go through this, is in the rehab. I’m sure, based on the way he dedicated himself last winter, he’ll be very, very serious about his rehab work.”

Alford, the Giants third-round pick in 2007, tore his MCL and partially tore his ACL when the Giants played the Bears in a pre-season game on August 22nd.

Last year, Alford had 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Bills fire Turk Schonert

This week, the Chiefs and Bucs have dismissed their offensive coordinators -- Chan Gailey and Jeff Jagodzinski, respectively. Today, the Buffalo Bills followed suit.

The Bills have fired Turk Schonert, who had been the Bills' offensive coordinator since last year, and have replaced him with Alex Van Pelt, who was the quarterbacks coach, according to the Associated Press.

"It was just the lack of productivity and the direction we were moving. I just didn't feel like it was going certainly where I envisioned it," Jauron said at a news conference. "Hopefully, it'll provide a jolt, hopefully a jolt forward."

Last year, the Bills ranked 8th-worst in the league in total offense (305.1 yards per game). In the off-season, the Bills added receiver Terrell Owens to provide some firepower to their lackluster offense.

While Schonert won't get the opportunity to coach (and clash with) Terrell Owens in a regular-season game, T.O. jokingly accepted responsibility for the firing via his Twitter account.

"So let me apologize now 4 somehow, sumway, i got the OC fired!" Owens tweeted earlier today. "I felt like i wsn't getting enuff balls n preseason!"

Who's next? What had seemed to be the exception to the rule at the beginning of the week has become the norm.

Jones-Drew to have MRI Friday

The Jaguars have made running back Maurice Jones-Drew the centerpiece of their offense in 2009 (and beyond). However, the MJD (as a starter) era will begin with him banged up.

Last night, Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot tackled him low and MJD left the game. While X-rays were negative, he's scheduled for an MRI today.

">He had a 'UFC shot' to the shin or lower leg and it's bruised," Del Rio said. "Maurice was a little frustrated by the hit and he wanted to get his hands on the guy, I can tell you that."

Although Jones-Drew was the back-up to Fred Taylor, he has more than 4,000 combined (rushing and receiving) yards and 40 touchdowns in his first three NFL seasons.

Wade Phillips is 'sonofbum' on Twitter

Of all NFL head coaches to be the first to sign up for a Twitter account, would you have expected it to be Cowboys coach Wade Phillips?

Me neither.

But, according to Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News, Phillips has signed up for a Twitter account under the ID of 'sonofbum.' As of yesterday, he had 1200 followers.

"I just tried it out to see what it was," said Phillips, the first NFL head coach with a confirmed Twitter account. "They said it wasn't hard to get on there, so I did it."

So, what's next? Browns coach Eric Mangini signing up under 'CoachWithoutAQB' or Vikings coach Brad Childress signing up under 'FavresBitch.'

5 Fantasy Running Backs to target in your draft

As you already know, fantasy football leagues are not necessarily won by the genius who decides to select Adrian Peterson with the number one pick. Whether you have the third pick, the eighth pick or the tenth pick, everyone is getting top talent in the first round.

And if we take a quick look back to 2008, players such as Matt Forte, Deangelo Williams and Chris Johnson were drafted in the 10th round or later yet they put up first-round numbers.

While that may be the extreme, the key to winning your league is selecting players who are good values in relation to where they are drafted and to do so consistently throughout your draft.

So, here are some running backs to target from round 3 through the later rounds:

Kevin Smith, Lions – Last year was the year of the rookie RB. Three of them rushed for 1,000+ yards. One of the guys who flew under the radar and just fell shy of 1,000 yards was Kevin Smith of Detroit.

While Smith has a case of JonKitna-itis, predicting a Detroit Lions’ playoff berth in ’09, he just needs to do what he has done since November last year.

When given the chance in the second half, Smith produced and produced big. He rushed for 671 yards in the final 8 games. That is a 1,342-yard pace in an offense that had Dan “Safety Dance” Orlovsky running it.

Only 4 RBs had more than 1,342 yards in 2008.

With MegaTron -- that’s Calvin Johnson for those of you not well-versed in freakishly, athletic receiver nicknames -- entering his third season, a quarterback who's last name doesn't rhyme with jerkoff-ski and the addition of Brandon Pettigrew, the most-talented and best-blocking TE in the draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith continued his second-half pace into 2009, in which case Smith becomes the bargain of the third round of your draft.

Ryan Grant, Packers – Although he wasn’t 100% to start the season and didn’t crack 20 carries in the first five weeks of the year, Ryan Grant was one of only five backs to carry the ball 300+ times in 2008.

Despite some labeling him a “bust,” Grant finished strong and still rushed for 1203 yards. All four of the times he eclipsed the century mark came in the final ten games of the season.

With Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver in the passing game, opposing defenses need to be honest when trying to stop Grant and the Packers running attack.

Provided Grant stays healthy for the entire season, he should top his 2008 production of 1200+ yards.

Ray Rice, Ravens – If you read my blog post in early June -- ‘Four (Ravens’) Breakout Players for 2009’ -- over at FootBaltimore.com, putting Ray Rice on this list doesn’t surprise you.

In 2009, I expect the Ravens’ ground game to be the same as -- but different than -- it was in 2008. So, what does that mean?

Last year, the Ravens led the NFL in rushing attempts at 37 per game. I don’t expect that to change much. What will be different in 2009 is how the carries are allocated. Rice, who has been running (no pun intended) with the first team, should receive the most carries this year. Le’Ron McClain, last year’s leader with 232 carries, has moved to FB full-time to take over for the departed Lorenzo Neal.

While Willis McGahee had a strong camp, Rice has added both muscle and confidence in the off-season. And Coach John Harbaugh has been singing his praises saying that he has no doubt that Rice can be an “every-down back.”

Donald Brown, Colts – Brown, who was the nation’s leading rusher in college football and joins one of the most prolific offenses in the league. Brown carried the rock 28 times per game on average at UConn and rushed for 200+ yards three times and 150+ yards eight times.

With Joseph Addai already in Indy, Brown will be part of a platoon to start the season.

Worst-case scenario, Brown should get 10-12 carries per game and finish with around 700-800 yards.

Best-case scenario, (except from Addai’s perspective), it’s déjà vu all over again for Addai leading to huge upside for Brown.

Cedric Benson, Bengals – While I wouldn’t go for a boat ride with Bengals running back Cedric Benson, I’d certainly draft him after 30 or so running backs are off the board, which is what his Yahoo! ADP and ESPN rank would project.

Benson (and the Bengals for that matter) finished 2008 strong despite being the 32nd-ranked offense in the league last year. In the final three weeks of the season, Benson showed why the Bears drafted him fourth overall in 2005.

In those three games (all wins), Benson carried the ball 84 times for 355 yards and caught 5 passes for 107 yards. With Carson Palmer healthy (arm/shoulder, at least), Chad Ochocinco refocused and top rookie Andre Smith re-joining the offensive line (after his broken foot heals), there is no reason to believe that the Bengals will finish ranked last in offense again this year. And Benson should only benefit from those healthier, refocused and new components to the offense.

Some other RBs I like late in the draft: Felix Jones (Cowboys), Ahmad Bradshaw (Giants) and James Davis (Browns).

Jags out, Olson in to run Bucs' offense

The NFL regular season hasn't started yet and two offensive coordinators have already been dismissed.

Earlier in the week, the Chiefs stripped the coordinator duties from Chan Gailey and today the Bucs did the same with Jeff Jagodzinski, per Roy Cummings of The Tampa Tribune.

"We're at the point now where we need to be more precise, more detailed," [Bucs coach Raheem] Morris said. "We need to have more direction to where we're going to go and we just don't have it right now. That's about as detailed as I can get on it."

Taking over for Jags will be Greg Olson, who was the team's quarterbacks coach. Jagodzinski was offered Olson's position, but he declined.

"I am certainly disappointed but I wish nothing but the best for Raheem Morris and the entire Buccaneer organization," Jagodzinski said. "I was given the chance to remain on staff as the quarterbacks coach, but felt that the timing for such a move was not in the best interest for either side. I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me. Again, I wish nothing but the best for this organization."

With only ten days remaining before the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, the move comes as a surprise. However, the Bucs were concerned with Jagodzinski's limited play-calling skills, according to Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times.

Before joining the Bucs' coaching staff in January, Jagodzinski was fired from Boston College, where he spent the past two seasons as head coach. He interviewed for the Jets' head coaching vacancy, which was eventually filled by Rex Ryan.

While I suppose correcting for a mistake now is better than waiting four months to correct a mistake, but this wasn't his first stint as an NFL offensive coordinator.

Jagodzinski was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay in 2007 and their offense ranked ninth in total yards (341.1 yards per game) and were tied for 22nd in scoring (18.8 points per game).

Marshall-to-Jets unlikely

This morning, Bob Glauber of Newsday wrote that the Jets were interested in suspended (by the team) Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall. But Glauber says now writes that "a trade appears highly unlikely."

And Broncos coach Josh McDaniels says the team hasn't been in contact with any other team in regards to a possible trade for Marshall.

"There is no discussions whatsoever taking place between Denver Broncos and any team in the National Football League regarding Brandon Marshall," McDaniels said. "We're looking forward to having Brandon back on the 6th of September and starting our (season-opening) preparation with him."

Yet, according to sources of ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Broncos wanted linebacker David Harris in any deal. The Jets aren't willing to part with Harris, who led the team in tackles in 2007.

Marshall, who is due to earn $2.2 million in the final year of his contract, is seeking a new contract -- either with Denver or elsewhere. Although he has recorded back-to-back 100-reception seasons, his off-the-field issues make the Broncos unlikely to sign him to an extension.

If Denver hadn't traded Jay Cutler, who pouted his way from Denver to Chicago, it might make sense to trade Marshall if they could get the first-round and fourth-round pick they are believed to seek in return.

Yet if they cave in to another of the team's cry babies, the exception to the rule becomes a disturbing trend for other disgruntled players to follow.

The Broncos have the leverage in the scenario (as they did in the Cutler situation).

If Marshall wants a lucrative contract after this season, it would be in his best interest to return from the team-imposed suspension and toe the company line. He needs to reverse the perception that his character issues off the field don't outweigh his production on the field (to be precise, the game field considering his practice field antics).

Everything else that he does to be considered "conduct detrimental to the team" in 2009 will cost him in six months when he becomes a free agent.

Foot fracture to sideline Andre Smith

After holding out for 30 days, Bengals first-round Andre Smith signed with the team over the weekend. However, he's already going to miss some time due to injury.

Per John Clayton of ESPN, Smith has a small fracture in his foot and he will miss the season opener (September 13th), at least. But it's not known much additional time, if any, Smith will miss.

"Andre suffered a small fracture in his left foot during a non-contact drill," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "Our medical staff tells me the injury will not require surgery. It's too soon to closely predict how long it will be before he can return to practice, but it looks like he's going to miss a few weeks."

Anthony Collins, who was starting at right tackle during Smith's holdout, will stay at right tackle.
