DeAngelo Williams agrees to five-year deal with Panthers

In what seemed much less likely several months ago and a virtual reality now, running back DeAngelo Williams said Monday night that he wanted to retire as a Panther.

Based on the deal to which he agreed today, that seems very likely.

As I tweeted (or retweeted NFL Network's Michael Lombardi) earlier today, Williams and the Panthers agreed on a five-year deal worth $43 million, which includes $21 million in guaranteed money.

Provided Williams plays out the full five years (a big if), he'll be 32 years old at the end of the deal.

With his return, Williams should continue to be the leader in touches amongst the team's talented backs, which also include Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson.

Williams, who rushed for 1,515 yards and scored 20 total touchdowns in 2008, missed ten games last year. In the six games he played, Williams and Stewart got 87 and 50 carries, respectively.

Both Jonathan Stewart, the team's first-round pick in 2008, and Mike Goodson under contract through 2012 and due to become free agents in 2013.

With inexperienced and/or untalented quarterbacks on the roster, the Panthers will likely remain a run-heavy team but the fantasy value for The Daily Show and Goodson take a huge hit with Williams' return.
