Shane Vereen placed on short-term IR, eligible to return in Week 11

Despite breaking a small bone in his wrist on the first play of the game Sunday, Patriots running back Shane Vereen was one of only two running backs to exceed 100 rushing yards in Week 1 along with Philadelphia's LeSean McCoy.

(Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor also rushed for more than 100 yards.)

Even though he played through the injury, it required surgery and Vereen was expected to miss a "few weeks."

Unfortunately for Vereen owners, a few has turned into at least eight as the Patriots placed him on injured reserve with the designation to return. Since he has to sit out eight games and the Patriots have their bye in Week 10, the soonest he's eligible to return is Week 11.

In my early Week 2 running back rankings, I have Stevan Ridley as my 18th-ranked running back.

If I added a Patriots running back from the waiver wire, I'd likely add Leon Washington, who could/should see third-down duties with Ridley getting touches on early downs.
