Report: Panthers are trying to trade WR Steve Smith

Last month, Panthers receiver Steve Smith was disappointed by how he found out that he may not be part of the team's plans in 2014.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are trying to trade Smith:

As Rapoport notes, it is unlikely that the Panthers will find a willing trade partner given his cap number ($7 million) and age (turns 35 in May). In turn, that means the Panthers are likely to cut Smith at some point after 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Smith is the all-time leader in franchise history in receptions (836), receiving yards (12,197) and receiving touchdowns (67).

Coming off a disappointing season (64/745/4), Smith still led the team's wideouts in receiving although tight end Greg Olsen led the team in receiving with a line of 73/816/6.

The team's only other receivers to exceed 100 receiving yards last year — Brandon LaFell (627) and Ted Ginn (556) — will both become unrestricted free agents tomorrow.
