Tashard Choice would like opportunity to play more

In some ways, it's an embarrassment of riches.

Not many football teams have a third-string running back that can be an effective starter in the NFL.

I love being in Dallas, but I just know I should be playing more,” [Cowboys running back Tashard] Choice said Sunday, per Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News. “When we lose and I don't get much of a chance, I'm sick.”

That said, the Cowboys have stated that their plan is to retain the services of all three of their running backs including Choice, who has a career average of 5.3 yards per carry.

On Monday, Choice said to Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com, "I only get to actually run the football when the other two guys get hurt, and I don't want the other two guys to get hurt. I want them to play well and be on top of their games."

It wouldn't surprise me to see an even split of carries between the team's other two running backs - Marion Barber III and Felix Jones - in 2010. Or even to see Jones be the featured guy over Barber.

Choice only had more than four carries in three regular-season games in 2009. On the season, Choice had a total of 64 carries for 349 yards and three touchdowns.

With the punishment that backs take and Choice's ability to produce, however, it would make sense for the Cowboys to give Choice a greater share of the workload to keep all three of their backs healthy.

Wade Phillips to coach the Cowboys in 2010

Another round of cupcakes for everybody...

According to sources of ESPN's Ed Werder, the Dallas Cowboys, who hold a 2010 option on coach Wade Phillips, will bring back Phillips to coach the team next season. What's uncertain, however, is whether owner Jerry Jones will extend Phillips' contract a year (or more) beyond 2010.

Before yesterday's 34-3 beatdown at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings, the Cowboys were arguably the hottest team in football after putting together an impressive four-game winning streak including their first playoff victory since 1996.

While yesterday's loss to the Vikings was disappointing for the Cowboys and their fans, the team overachieved based on most pre-season expectations. Most (including me) expected Dallas to finish third in the division.

"His record speaks for itself," quarterback Tony Romo said (via ESPN). "He's done a great job, kept the team together through a lot of tough times this year. He's done a fantastic job as coach of the Cowboys."

Phillips got the first playoff victory of his career last week and as defensive coordinator as well as head coach, he did a great job running the team's defense. The Cowboys finished the season ranked second in defensive scoring (15.6 points allowed per game), ninth in total defense (315.9 yards allowed per game) and seventh in sacks (42).

And during their four-game winning streak, the Cowboys allowed a total of only 24 points including back-to-back shutouts after holding the league's highest scoring offense (then-unbeaten New Orleans) to only 17 points.

Maybe Jerry Jones is right and the Cowboys have a young team that is comparable to the 1991 team that finished 11-5, won one playoff game to end a long drought and then got beat down before going on to win three of four Super Bowls from 1992 to 1995.

But if you ask ESPN's Jim Reeves, he believes that the inability of a Phillips-led squad to coach the team to a Super Bowl, then the Cowboys are about a waste a huge opportunity.

With the contract option, I believe the solution is pretty straightforward for the Cowboys.

If the Cowboys bring back Phillips for 2010 and take a wait-and-see approach about the future beyond the upcoming season, I believe they are making the right choice. If they lock themselves into a longer-term deal with -- and settle for -- Phillips, then they are not.

With a playoff win, a strong finish, a maturing quarterback and a very good young defense, Phillips deserves an opportunity to build on his and the team's 2009 momentum.

That said, expectations for 2010 will be high(er) and if those expectations aren't met, then it would make sense to not bring Phillips back at that point.

NFC playoff seeding set

While the NFC playoff seedings are now set, the final AFC playoff teams and seeding will be decided by the Jets-Bengals game tonight.

Here are the NFC seeds:

1. New Orleans: Although the Saints entered the weekend with the top seed already clinched, they enter the playoffs with a three-game losing streak after today's loss to the Panthers.

2. Minnesota: The Vikings bounced back in a big way with an old-fashioned beatdown of the New Jersey Giants by the score of 44-7.

3. Dallas: After back-to-back shutouts of the Redskins last week and the Eagles today, the Cowboys clinched the NFC East title and the #3 seed. They will host the Eagles again next week.

4. Arizona: The Cardinals won the NFC West and will face the Packers again next week. This week, the Packers crushed the Cardinals 33-7.

5. Green Bay: Tough to beat a playoff two weeks in a row. But that's what the Packers will try to do.

6. Philadelphia: If Minnesota had lost and Philadelphia had won today, the Eagles would have been the #2 seed. Instead it's two rematches of today's games in the wildcard round.

Fantasy Football: Week 17 QB rankings

While most fantasy football leagues conduct their championship game in week 16, some leagues still hold their title game in week 17. That creates the extra challenge of trying to forecast playing time in addition to evaluating matchups.

That said, here are our top five fantasy quarterbacks for week 17:

1. Matt Schaub, Texans (vs Patriots): While they don't control their own destiny like the Jets and Ravens, the Texans need to win to make the playoffs. That means, Schaub will play the entire game. On the season, Schaub has been remarkably consistent with only two single-digit fantasy games and only three games with less than 250 passing yards. Over the past five weeks, the Patriots have allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.

2. Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers (at Dolphins): Big Ben is two games off his franchise-record passing performance (503 yards). Over the past five weeks, the Dolphins have allowed the third-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. As the Steelers face a similar scenario as the Texans, you should expect Roethlisberger to play the entire game and light up an inexperienced Dolphins' secondary.

3. Brett Favre, Vikings (vs Giants): The Giants secondary has been banged up all season and over the past five weeks, they have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. The Vikings have lost three of their past four games and Favre has posted single-digit fantasy points in two of his past three games. Although the Vikings lost to the Bears last week, Favre played well -- 321 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs. With the potential of losing their first-round bye with another defeat, expect Favre and the Vikings to come out swinging -- and gun-slinging.

4. Tony Romo, Cowboys (vs Eagles): In his past five games, Romo has finished with 13+ fantasy points every week. During that span, he has thrown nine touchdowns and only one interception. The mood surrounding the Cowboys is different than last year when they faced the Eagles in a do-or-die game in week 17 last year. The Cowboys didn't respond well last year. Now Romo and the Cowboys have a chance for redemption (and possibly even a first-round bye).

5. Donovan McNabb, Eagles (at Cowboys): With the exception of the two games McNabb missed due to injury, McNabb has posted double-digit fantasy points every week except one. Who held him to under 10 points? This week's opponent. That said, it will be difficult to hold McNabb and their pass-first-and-ask-questions-later offense to less than 10 fantasy points for a second time in a row. McNabb has thrown for 300+ yards in each of the past two weeks and a win Sunday could potentially mean a first-round bye for the Eagles.

DeMarcus Ware status unclear for Saturday

Cowboys All-World linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who left Sunday's game on a stretcher, may play Saturday against the Saints according to coach Wade Phillips, per CBSSports.com.

"He's actually a lot better today," coach Wade Phillips said Monday. "He's really in a day-to-day situation as far as where he's going to be, as far as being able to play. He took quite a hit but has really bounced back strong. That's encouraging for him and us."

However, last night ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that Ware "won't play vs N.O."

In either case, this is the Cowboys' most important game of the season.

If they win out (including against the Eagles in week 17), they will win the NFC East. At a minimum, they need to have the same record as the Eagles over the next two games to control their own destiny when they face the Eagles (again).

Meanwhile, the Saints look to extend their winning streak to 14 games and this should be the team's biggest test to go 16-0. After the Cowboys, the Sainst play the Bucs and Panthers.

On the season, Ware has nine sacks and 51 tackles.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 14

Each week I pick three NFL games against the spread (ATS). Here are my week 14 picks:

Chargers +3.5 (over Cowboys): With the obvious exception of the two unbeaten teams (Indianapolis and New Orleans), San Diego has the NFL's longest winning streak (7 games) in the NFL. The Chargers' offense is firing on all cylinders and is averaging 28.5 points per game (third-best in the NFL). During their seven-game winning streak, they have scored 30+ points five times and 20+ points in all seven games. And if you have to bet in a December game involving the Cowboys, which side would you want?

Falcons +10 (over Saints): I don't expect the Falcons to beat the Saints. However, as the Patriots did in their perfect regular-season two years ago, they played a lot of close games down the stretch. We are seeing that with the Saints lately. They needed overtime to beat the Redskins last week as four of their past six games have been decided by 10 points or less. Anything can happen in divisional matchups and giving double-digit points on the road is a little rich for my blood.

Eagles -1 (over Giants): The Giants got a much-needed victory over the Cowboys last week. With a 2-5 record in their past seven games, it would be premature to say that the Giants have turned things around. The Giants have allowed over 20 points in seven consecutive games and the Eagles get playmaker DeSean Jackson back this week. This season, the Giants are 1-6 ATS against opponents with a winning record.

Fantasy Football: Top 50 WRs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 wide receivers for week 13:

1. Randy Moss, Patriots (at Dolphins): In his first matchup against the Dolphins, who rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed (233 ypg), Moss had six receptions for 147 yards and one TD. On the season, Moss leads the NFL in receiving yards (992) and is only one behind the leaders in TD receptions (eight). After getting their ass whooped on prime-time TV, expect the Patriots, Tom Brady, Moss & Co. to come out swinging.

2. Andre Johnson, Texans (at Jaguars): Johnson is one of the league's most complete receivers and perhaps the most underrated. This week, Johnson gets a favorable matchup against the Jaguars, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to receivers this season. On the season, Johnson ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (945).

3. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals (vs Vikings): The Vikings have been without Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, for the past five games. On the season, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. My expectation is for QB Kurt Warner to return from his concussion as Fitzgerald had his worst game of the season with Matt Leinart as QB last week. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (nine) including four TDs in the last three games in which Warner has played.

4. Reggie Wayne, Colts (vs Titans): Wayne is second in receptions (79), second in receiving yards (987) and tied for first in touchdowns (nine) in the league. In addition to their improvements with Vince Young under center, the Titans have improved on the defensive side of the ball as they are healthier now. Only the Lions (27) have allowed more receiving touchdowns than the Titans (25) on the season. During their five-game winning streak, however, the Titans have allowed only the 18th-most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (at Cardinals): In three of his past six games, Rice has 136 receiving yards or more including a game with 201yards. With the exception of his game at Green Bay, Rice has had 89 yards or more in five of his past six. Favre and Rice have built chemistry quickly and they have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to receivers this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 40 RBs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 running backs for week 13:

1. Thomas Jones, Jets (at Bills): The first time that Jones faced the Bills this season, he rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and only the Raiders have allowed more rushing TDs than the Bills (16). Since the Jets want QB Mark Sanchez to air it out less and less (his attempts have gone from 35 to 30 to 21 to 17), Jones better bring his lunch-pail tonight.

2. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Colts): As well as Johnson has played in the past six weeks (125+ rushing yards every week), you can consider Johnson 1(a) -- not #2 -- in this week's rankings. During their five-game winning streak, Johnson has rushed for seven touchdowns. Although the Colts have a middle-of-the-pack run defense on the season, they've given up the 11th-most fantasy points to opposing RBs in the past three weeks.

3. DeAngelo Williams, Panthers (vs Buccaneers): DeAngelo has cooled off a bit with no touchdowns in the past three weeks and only one 100-yard game during that span. The first time that Williams faced the Buccaneers this season, he carried the ball 30 times for 152 yards and two scores. Expect more of the same against the league's third-worst rush defense.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (at Cardinals): The Cardinals were the league's top-ranked run defense earlier in the season, but they have dropped to 14th in the NFL against the run (108.6 ypg allowed). In four of the past five weeks, they have allowed an opposing running back to eclipse the century mark. Surprisingly, Peterson has only three 100-yard games on the season, but he is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (vs Texans): MJD has rushed for more rushing touchdowns (13) than any other running back. (Of course, none of those are as famous as the TD that he didn't score.) That said, Jones-Drew faces a Texans run defense that turned itself around after the first three weeks. In week 3, however, MJD rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Football: Top 25 QBs for Week 13

It's time to put up or shut up. If you haven't yet clinched a playoff berth in your fantasy league, it likely comes down to week 13 for you as most fantasy leagues start their playoffs in week 14.

And to paraphrase Bill Parcells, this is why you buy those cheat sheets, do those mock drafts, etc. -- to get into (and win in) the playoffs.

Here are my top 5 quarterbacks for week 13:

1. Peyton Manning, Colts (vs Titans): Manning is the only QB to average over 300 passing yards per game (310.5) and is second in passing touchdowns (24). While the Titans and their defense have been playing better lately, they have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns (25) this season.

2. Brett Favre, Vikings (at Cardinals): In his past four games, Favre has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, Arizona allows the fourth-most passing yards (258.3 ypg).

3. Drew Brees, Saints (at Redskins): Brees is coming off a five-TD performance against the Patriots in what was arguably the most important regular-season game in team history. Although this week's opponent (Washington) allows the fewest passing yards in the NFL (170.4 ypg), Brees and the Saints offense are firing on all cylinders right now.

4. Tom Brady, Patriots (at Dolphins): Brady failed to connect on a TD pass last week, but he had 332 passing yards against the Dolphins in their first match-up. With targets like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it's not likely that Brady goes TD-less in back-to-back games.

5. Philip Rivers, Chargers (at Chiefs): Rivers has posted three consecutive 100+ QB ratings and this week he faces the Browns, who have allowed the ninth-most passing yards (233.4 ypg) this season. In the past four games, Rivers has thrown eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Fantasy Football - RB Studs for Week 12

Here are three running backs that I expect to have a big week in week 12:

Marion Barber, Cowboys: You could argue that the Cowboys have the most talented trio of running backs in the league. Yet they haven't exploited their ability of their backs as much as I think they could (or should) have this season. Last weekend, the Cowboys gave Marion "The Barbarian" his first 20-carry workload of the season. Although he didn't reach paydirt, MBIII rushed for 99 yards and had his best game since week 2. This week, Barber faces the Raiders, who have given more rushing touchdowns (16) than any other team this season. Only the Bills and Browns have allowed more fantasy points than the Raiders this season. On a short week, the Cowboys and Barber should be able to wear down the Raiders defensive front and get their offense back on track.

Ricky Williams, Dolphins: With Ronnie Brown out for the season, Williams had a three-TD performance (two rushing and one receiving) in his first start of the season last week in prime time against the Carolina Panthers. In the past two games, Williams has received 20+ carries and 100+ yards in both games and this week should be no different. The Bills, who have one of the league's best pass defenses, struggle against the run. In fact, no team has allowed opposing running backs to score more fantasy points on the season.

Jason Snelling, Falcons: Provided that Michael "The Burner" Turner is out for another week, Snelling should be in for a big day against the Buccaneers. With Turner suffering a high-ankle sprain two games ago, Snelling has scored three touchdowns and has put up 35 fantasy points in the past two weeks. This week, he faces the Buccaneers, who are allowing a league-worst 168.9 rushing yards per game. Turner did practice yesterday, but it is unusual for players to only miss one game with this type of injury. If Turner can go, that would diminish Snelling's fantasy value significantly so make sure to check the actives/inactives for the game.

Jason Witten could miss Thursday's game

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will be a game-time decision for the Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Oakland Raiders due to his sprained foot, according to the Associated Press.

"As far as I know, it's a situation where if he's not well enough, he could hurt it more," [Cowboys coach Wade] Phillips said. "That's a big concern."

Witten, who has only missed one game in his career, is having an off-year compared to his production of the past two seasons (177 receptions for 2097 yards and 11 touchdowns).

Through 10 games, he has 54 receptions for 481 yards and only one touchdown.

As ESPN's Matthew Berry points out, Oakland hasn't allowed a receiving TD to tight ends this season so Witten may be in for another long day even if he plays.

November 22, 2009

Ladell Betts has knee injury

The Redskins were already without starting running back Clinton Portis, who has missed the past two games with a concussion.

Now they have lost back-up Ladell Betts to a knee injury for at least the rest of this game. There is no word on the extent of his injury.

Betts had four carries for five yards before being injured.

Rock Cartwright has 129 combined yards (63 rushing and 66 receiving) as the Redskins lead 6-0 after three quarters against the Cowboys.

November 21, 2009

Fantasy Football: Week 11 RB Duds

Here are three running backs that I would sit on my bench for week 11:

Marion Barber, Cowboys: The last time that Barber had over 53 rushing yards was in week 2 against the New York Giants. And MBIII has reached paydirt only once in his past five games. Meanwhile Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones wants to see more of Felix Jones as JJ said, "I certainly understand balance, but I'd sure like to see [Felix Jones] with the ball more." I would expect Barber to get more than five carries like he did last week. Since the Redskins have allowed the fourth-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs this season, however, Barber's production may be limited even if he were to receive a full workload.

Marshawn Lynch, Bills: After serving his three-game suspension, Lynch has played six games and hasn't reached 70 rushing yards in any of them. And he has only one rushing touchdown this season. On the season, Lynch is averaging 42.3 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per carry. In the past two games, Lynch has had only nine carries in each game. Until Lynch shows that he's worthy of a starting spot on your fantasy team, he should remain on your bench.

Laurence Maroney, Patriots: In the past four games, Maroney has rushed for a touchdown every week. Considering his best performance in the first five weeks of the season was a 32-yard game with no touchdowns, Maroney has been a nice surprise for fantasy owners lately. But last week Maroney only received one more carry than Kevin Faulk and Maroney had a critical fumble inside the 5-yard line. Meanwhile Sammy Morris is a game-time decision so Maroney could receive a couple less carries should Morris play. Over the past five weeks, only five teams have allowed fewer fantasy points to opposing running backs than the Jets have.

See my RB studs for week 11.

Westbrook out for tonight's game, per Adam Schefter

According to sources of ESPN's Adam Schefter, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook won't play in tonight's game against the Cowboys.

Westbrook sat out last week after suffering a concussion during the game against the Redskins on October 26th.

Both the Cowboys and Eagles are tied for first in the NFC East with 5-2 records. The Giants, who are a half-game behind the leaders at 5-3, are playing the San Diego Chargers this afternoon.

Rookie LeSean McCoy, who was the Eagles' second-round draft pick, will get another start and he leads the Eagles in rushing with 294 yards.

But in the past four games, McCoy has yard-per-carry averages of 2.3, 2.6, 2.6 and 7.5. However, if you remove the 66-yard run he had last week against the Giants, he had 10 carries for 16 yards (or a 1.6 YPC).

The Weekly Blitz - Week 9

Every week, I pick three games against the spread (ATS) and I am coming off my second 3-0 week in the past three weeks.

My record on the season is now 14-10, which is solid, but still worse than last season's record of 63.3% correct ATS, which I use as my personal benchmark.

That said, here are my week 9 picks:

Panthers +13 (over Saints): Call me crazy -- after all, I've certainly been called worse -- for picking the Panthers here. But we are seeing a re-emergence of the Panthers' rushing attack and Delhomme, well, hasn't screwed that up allowing the Panthers to win three of their past four. In the past four games, DeAngelo Williams (439 rushing yards) and Jonathan Stewart (261) have combined for 700 rushing yards for an average of 5.0 yards per carry and seven touchdowns. In this series, the road team is not only 13-1 against the spread (ATS) since 2001, but they are 11-4 straight up. While I don't expect the Panthers, who were the # 2 seed in the NFC last year, to pull off a huge upset, I expect them to keep it close -- or, at least, within 13 points.

Eagles -3 (over Cowboys): First, I am rooting to be wrong here (as a Cowboys' fan). But I am realistic. At the beginning of the season, I predicted the Eagles to win the NFC East and for the Cowboys to finish third. But the point spread indicates that these two teams are "even" as the home team generally receives three points for playing at home. Meanwhile, the Eagles pummeled the New York Football Giants last week and are firing on all cylinders. The Cowboys, specifically Tony Romo, have limited the mistakes, which has been key to their three-game winning streak. For the first time in his career, Romo has gone interception-less for three consecutive games. Of all the teams Romo has faced at least twice, the Eagles are the only team to force Romo into more interceptions (eight) than touchdowns thrown (seven). But the Eagles are 16-9 straight up and 16-7 ATS versus the Cowboys since 1996.

Chargers +4.5 (over Giants): Philip Rivers is a better quarterback than Eli Manning. Period. And the difference couldn't be any more apparent in the past four weeks. Although Rivers has faced defenses like Pittsburgh's, Denver's and Oakland's (who has Nnamdi Asomugha, arguably the league's top corner), Rivers hasn't had a passer rating lower than 93.6 in any of his past four games. During that span, Rivers has thrown for 261.3 yards per game, completed 60.5 percent of passes and thrown eight touchdowns and only one interception. Eli, on the other hand, has thrown for 204 ypg, completed 52.1% of passes and has thrown more INTs (6) than TDs (5). I expect the Chargers to take advantage of the Giants' depleted secondary. The Giants may end their three-game skid, but the Chargers will, at a minimum, keep this game close.

Westbrook will play against the Cowboys

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, who suffered a concussion two games ago, has been cleared to play -- and will (barring any setbacks) -- against the Dallas Cowboys in their Sunday Night Football matchup this week.

This will be the first time they face each other this season. Their second matchup, in Dallas, will be played on January 3rd in week 17. (Eagles schedule | Cowboys schedule)

The Eagles and Cowboys are tied for first in the NFC East at 5-2 and hold a half-game lead over the Giants, who are 5-3 and on a three-game losing streak.

Westbrook, who sat out last week, says he's ready to "play with reckless abandon" on Sunday.

"I just look at it as a fluke thing," said Westbrook, per Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. "It was weird, because going into that game, I felt pretty good . . . It's frustrating, but at the same time, I guess the bright side of it, if anything is, it wasn't my knee, wasn't my ankle. I'm concerned about the long-term effects of it, but when you go out there and play football, you have to . . . play worry-free football. You have to go out there and try to play with reckless abandon."

On the season, Westbrook, who has played five games, is second on the team in rushing with 197 yards to rookie LeSean McCoy, who has 294 yards. Although Westbrook is averaging nearly five yards per carry, he's only getting, on average, eight carries per game.

"Veteran players want to keep their jobs, especially when they get a little older, and some of them can be very sensitive about that," [coach Andy] Reid said. "Brian has enough confidence in himself and knows that LeSean is willing to work and willing to listen and be coachable, so Brian shares with him some of his experiences and helps him out. That, from a coaching standpoint, that's invaluable."

The Cowboys rank 13th in the league in rushing yards allowed (105.0 per game) and have allowed only three rushing touchdowns. Only three teams (Vikings, Steelers and Patriots) have allowed fewer rushing TDs.

In fantasy points allowed to running backs, the Cowboys have allowed the 18th most at 18.0 per game.

Cowboys sign Ware to six-year extension

DeMarcus Ware will be a Dallas Cowboy until 2015.

Or, as Cowboys owner Jerry Jones puts it: "This is a Cowboy, for all practical purposes, for the rest of his days."

Ware and the Cowboys agreed to a six-year contract extension worth $78 million, of which $40 million is guaranteed.

"He's got all the things it takes and he utilizes them and he works hard at it," [Coach Wade] Phillips said. "He's only going to get better. I don't know if he's going to get more sacks than ever, but I mean he's just going to get better, because he works so hard at what he does."

Last year, Ware led the league in sacks with 20. For his career, Ware has 57.5 sacks in 70 games.

After struggling a bit early in the season, Ware has four sacks in the past two games despite having a stress fracture in his foot.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 7

Every week, I pick three games against the spread (ATS) and last week was a good week (3-0 ATS). That improves my 2009 record to 10-8 although it pales in comparison to last year's record (31-18-2 ATS).

I like the matchups this week more than I have in previous weeks and here are my week 7 picks:

Steelers -5 (over Vikings): The Steelers haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 24 straight games and their run defense ranks second in the NFL. The Vikings are tied for the NFL lead in sacks (21). Although both teams are known for their great defenses, this game features the leader in passing yards (Ben Roethlisberger), rushing yards (Adrian Peterson) and receiving yards (Hines Ward) through six weeks. The Vikings are tied for second in turnover differential (+8) and Brett Favre has only two interceptions. For a QB that has averaged 1.12 INT's/game throughout his illustrious yet lengthy career, however, a regression to the mean is long overdue. Take the Steelers and give the points.

Falcons +4 (over Cowboys): The rule of thumb is that home-field advantage equates to three points. Therefore, this spread implies that the Cowboys are better (albeit by one point, but better nonetheless) than the Falcons on a neutral field. Really? As a Cowboys' fan, I'd like to believe that. But I can't. The Cowboys are coming off a bye and have had an extra week to prepare, which makes it an uphill battle for the Falcons. That being said, the Cowboys, who have a -4 turnover differential, tend to shoot themselves in the foot. Atlanta's turnover differential is +5. Although defense isn't Atlanta's strength, they rank fourth in the NFL in scoring defense (15.4 ppg) and haven't given up more than 26 points in any game this season. If the Falcons don't win this game outright, they should at least keep this game close.

Giants -7 (over Cardinals): Not only are the Cardinals one-dimensional on offense (5th in passing, 31st in rushing), they are one-dimensional on defense as well. They lead the NFL in rushing defense (59.6 ypg) and have held Maurice Jones-Drew, Steve Slaton and Frank Gore to 66, 39 and 30 rushing yards, respectively. However, their pass defense has allowed 265.2 passing yards per game, which is worse than every team except Tennessee. On the other hand, the Giants are more balanced with the following rankings: rush offense (5), pass offense (12), run defense (18) and pass defense (1). After an embarrassing loss to New Orleans, the Giants will come out swinging after last week's "Big Queasy" performance. In the past three years, the Giants are 5-0 against the spread (ATS) in games versus NFC West opponents.

Miles Austin has record day

In our Fantasy Football Weekly podcast earlier this morning, I mentioned that Cowboys receiver Miles Austin would be a good waiver-wire pickup as Roy Williams did not travel to Kansas City. But, in no way, did I foresee the type of day Austin was about to have.

In his first career start, Austin caught the game-winning touchdown in overtime against the Chiefs for his tenth reception of the day.

And in the process he finished with 250 receiving yards, which eclipses the previous Cowboys franchise record of 246 yards set in 1966 by Hall of Famer "Bullet" Bob Hayes.

In his previous four games this season, Austin had only five receptions for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Sensabaugh breaks thumb

Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh, who broke his thumb in today's game, expects to only miss one game, per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.

After Sensabaugh broke his thumb, Pat Watkins replaced him and finished with six tackles.

"I should be OK," said Sensabaugh. "I think I'll miss maybe one game and the bye week will help."

Before their bye, the Cowboys play the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday. Then their next game is against the Atlanta Falcons on October 25th.

Ben Hamilton is out for Broncos

The Denver Broncos will be without LG Ben Hamilton against the Dallas Cowboys this afternoon, per Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post.

Hamilton, who has an injured hammy, will be replaced by Russ Hochstein in the starting lineup.

RT Ryan Harris, who missed one day of practice this week after injuring his shoulder in last week's game, is active today.

The Broncos are fourth in the NFL in rushing with an average of 158.7 yards per game and 4.7 yards per carry.

Heartbreaking loss to open a new era for the Cowboys

Despite turning the ball over four times and getting weak play from their cornerbacks, the Dallas Cowboys nearly won the inaugural game in their new stadium, which set a record for attendance (105,121) in a regular-season game.

I was one of the 105,000+ in attendance and it was certainly an amazing experience. Yet it was frustrating to watch Tony Romo and the secondary play so poorly.

"We can't win games if I do things like that," said Romo, per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.

Speaking of the pass he threw that led to a pick six, Romo said, "They changed defense right at the snap. We thought we had a good play there but the cornerback read it."

And here's what he had to say about his third interception down the field: "I threw the ball thinking no one was back there. Without finding him, you can't do that. It's very disappointing, very frustrating that I would make a decision like that ... It hurts right now and it'll hurt again tomorrow, but I will improve from it."

As you already know, Romo needs to make better decisions for the Cowboys to win. Their three-headed rushing attack (although Tashard Choice had no carries last night) continues to be as good as any in the NFL.

Marion Barber, who left the game with a quadriceps injury, had 124 yards on 18 carries and Felix Jones had 96 yards on seven carries.

Their run defense held the Giants, who have one of the NFL's best run offenses, to only 97 yards on 26 attempts.

Like on offense, however, it was the Cowboys' pass defense that did the team no favors.

Cornerbacks Terrence Newman said they "didn't hold up our end" and Orlando Scandrick said that he "probably had the worst tackling game and we had mental errors."

The Cowboys will face an desperate Carolina Panthers, who are 0-2, next Monday night. Although this was a heart-breaking loss for the Cowboys, what matters most is how they handle the adversity and whether or not they bounce back in seven days.

Adam Schefter tweets Tony Romo to have ankle examined

Per Adam Schefter (via his Twitter account), "Cowboys QB Tony Romo told Michael Smith that he hurt his right ankle in today's third quarter and will have it examined Monday. Hmm."

The Cowboys beat the Buccaneers today 34-21 and Romo played the entire game. He finished with 353 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Next week, the Cowboys open up their new stadium against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football. Yours truly will be making the road trip to Dallas next weekend.

Considering Romo continued to play through the injury, hopefully it's nothing serious. Stay tuned...

2009 NFC East Prediction

Here are my predictions for the NFC East in 2009:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Prediction: 10-6 (Eagles Schedule | Eagles Forum)

The NFC East is the strongest division from top to bottom. Although the signing of Michael Vick may have dominated the headlines, the team made other off-season moves. They traded for left tackle Jason Peters and signed him to a long-term contract. They also drafted LeSean McCoy as Brian Westbrook's future replacement and receiver Jeremy Maclin, who will give Donovan McNabb another playmaker. However, the team still lacks a true No. 1 receiver, but minus the T.O. days, the Eagles may have their best receiving corps in the McNabb era. Then again, that isn't saying much. In such a physical and talented division, the question will be how their defense reacts to the losses of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson (who passed away), LB Stewart Bradley (season-ending injury) and safety Brian Dawkins (who was released).

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .535 winning percentage in 2008 (9th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Carolina, vs NY Giants, at San Diego, at Atlanta, at NY Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 27 (9.0 per season)

Wade Phillips is 'sonofbum' on Twitter

Of all NFL head coaches to be the first to sign up for a Twitter account, would you have expected it to be Cowboys coach Wade Phillips?

Me neither.

But, according to Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News, Phillips has signed up for a Twitter account under the ID of 'sonofbum.' As of yesterday, he had 1200 followers.

"I just tried it out to see what it was," said Phillips, the first NFL head coach with a confirmed Twitter account. "They said it wasn't hard to get on there, so I did it."

So, what's next? Browns coach Eric Mangini signing up under 'CoachWithoutAQB' or Vikings coach Brad Childress signing up under 'FavresBitch.'

5 Fantasy Running Backs to target in your draft

As you already know, fantasy football leagues are not necessarily won by the genius who decides to select Adrian Peterson with the number one pick. Whether you have the third pick, the eighth pick or the tenth pick, everyone is getting top talent in the first round.

And if we take a quick look back to 2008, players such as Matt Forte, Deangelo Williams and Chris Johnson were drafted in the 10th round or later yet they put up first-round numbers.

While that may be the extreme, the key to winning your league is selecting players who are good values in relation to where they are drafted and to do so consistently throughout your draft.

So, here are some running backs to target from round 3 through the later rounds:

Kevin Smith, Lions – Last year was the year of the rookie RB. Three of them rushed for 1,000+ yards. One of the guys who flew under the radar and just fell shy of 1,000 yards was Kevin Smith of Detroit.

While Smith has a case of JonKitna-itis, predicting a Detroit Lions’ playoff berth in ’09, he just needs to do what he has done since November last year.

When given the chance in the second half, Smith produced and produced big. He rushed for 671 yards in the final 8 games. That is a 1,342-yard pace in an offense that had Dan “Safety Dance” Orlovsky running it.

Only 4 RBs had more than 1,342 yards in 2008.

With MegaTron -- that’s Calvin Johnson for those of you not well-versed in freakishly, athletic receiver nicknames -- entering his third season, a quarterback who's last name doesn't rhyme with jerkoff-ski and the addition of Brandon Pettigrew, the most-talented and best-blocking TE in the draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith continued his second-half pace into 2009, in which case Smith becomes the bargain of the third round of your draft.

Ryan Grant, Packers – Although he wasn’t 100% to start the season and didn’t crack 20 carries in the first five weeks of the year, Ryan Grant was one of only five backs to carry the ball 300+ times in 2008.

Despite some labeling him a “bust,” Grant finished strong and still rushed for 1203 yards. All four of the times he eclipsed the century mark came in the final ten games of the season.

With Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver in the passing game, opposing defenses need to be honest when trying to stop Grant and the Packers running attack.

Provided Grant stays healthy for the entire season, he should top his 2008 production of 1200+ yards.

Ray Rice, Ravens – If you read my blog post in early June -- ‘Four (Ravens’) Breakout Players for 2009’ -- over at FootBaltimore.com, putting Ray Rice on this list doesn’t surprise you.

In 2009, I expect the Ravens’ ground game to be the same as -- but different than -- it was in 2008. So, what does that mean?

Last year, the Ravens led the NFL in rushing attempts at 37 per game. I don’t expect that to change much. What will be different in 2009 is how the carries are allocated. Rice, who has been running (no pun intended) with the first team, should receive the most carries this year. Le’Ron McClain, last year’s leader with 232 carries, has moved to FB full-time to take over for the departed Lorenzo Neal.

While Willis McGahee had a strong camp, Rice has added both muscle and confidence in the off-season. And Coach John Harbaugh has been singing his praises saying that he has no doubt that Rice can be an “every-down back.”

Donald Brown, Colts – Brown, who was the nation’s leading rusher in college football and joins one of the most prolific offenses in the league. Brown carried the rock 28 times per game on average at UConn and rushed for 200+ yards three times and 150+ yards eight times.

With Joseph Addai already in Indy, Brown will be part of a platoon to start the season.

Worst-case scenario, Brown should get 10-12 carries per game and finish with around 700-800 yards.

Best-case scenario, (except from Addai’s perspective), it’s déjà vu all over again for Addai leading to huge upside for Brown.

Cedric Benson, Bengals – While I wouldn’t go for a boat ride with Bengals running back Cedric Benson, I’d certainly draft him after 30 or so running backs are off the board, which is what his Yahoo! ADP and ESPN rank would project.

Benson (and the Bengals for that matter) finished 2008 strong despite being the 32nd-ranked offense in the league last year. In the final three weeks of the season, Benson showed why the Bears drafted him fourth overall in 2005.

In those three games (all wins), Benson carried the ball 84 times for 355 yards and caught 5 passes for 107 yards. With Carson Palmer healthy (arm/shoulder, at least), Chad Ochocinco refocused and top rookie Andre Smith re-joining the offensive line (after his broken foot heals), there is no reason to believe that the Bengals will finish ranked last in offense again this year. And Benson should only benefit from those healthier, refocused and new components to the offense.

Some other RBs I like late in the draft: Felix Jones (Cowboys), Ahmad Bradshaw (Giants) and James Davis (Browns).

Roy Williams has shoulder sprain

Cowboys receiver Roy Williams suffered a shoulder injury that, at first, was feared to be a broken collarbone after a collision with cornerback Orlando Scandrick during Thursday night's practice, according to a source of Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com.

Per Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News, however, X-rays revealed that Williams has a sprained shoulder -- not a broken collarbone, which would have taken six to eight weeks to heal.

The Cowboys are expected to provide an update of Williams' timetable on Friday, according to McMahon.

Williams and quarterback Tony Romo have had different views on their timing and chemistry established this off-season and in camp.

Earlier in the week, Williams said of their chemistry, “He threw a ball that was on time and right at the landmark where it was supposed to be. I think that's the second or third time that's ever happened where I was in the right spot, and the ball was in the right spot, and it just clicked and looked real pretty on film. We want to get to that 100 percent of the time. So far, we've only had three or four of those.”

Last year, Williams joined the Cowboys via a trade with Detroit when Tony Romo suffered an injury and missed three games.

In ten games with Dallas in 2008, Williams had 19 receptions for 198 yards.

No more racing DBs for Buehler

While it's not necessarily an important skill for a placekicker to possess, the Cowboys rookie David Buehler is perhaps the fastest kicker in the NFL.

In fact, Buehler, who ran a 4.56 forty at the NFL scouting combine, raced fellow rookie DeAngelo Smith, who will primarily play safety, in a 50-yard dash after practice. And Buehler won. Easily.

"A lot of people were telling him it's all downside," said Buehler, per Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News. "If you win, you know, you're supposed to beat a white kicker. It is what it is. I'm just being honest. A lot of players were telling him it's a lose-lose situation, but I just kept getting in his ear and talking. He just got frustrated and wanted to do it."

However, coach Wade Phillips wasn't too amused.

"He's not going to do that again," Phillips said today when asked about Buehler's racing prowess. "It's not very smart to do those types of things. He knows it, and he's not going to do it again."

Irvin to compete on Dancing with the Stars

MMA: Art of War III September 1, 2007

Several former and current NFL players have competed on Dancing with the Stars. And most of them have done very well.

The league's next representative in the contest will be former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin.

The next season is scheduled to begin on September 21st and Irvin will compete against 15 other stars.

Previous NFL contestants were Jerry Rice (season 2 runner-up), Emmitt Smith (season 3 winner), Jason Taylor (season 6 runner-up), Warren Sapp (season 7 runner-up) and Lawrence Taylor (season 8 - left after week 7).

Roy Williams day-to-day with sprained wrist

NFL: New York Giants vs Dallas Cowboys DEC 14

Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams skipped today's afternoon practice to get X-rays and an MRI on his left wrist after hurting it in this morning's practice. However, the X-rays were negative and Williams is day-to-day.

Going after a deep ball this morning, Williams used his left hand to brace himself for a fall when he got tangled up with cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

"That's part of training camp," [Cowboys quarterback] Tony Romo said. "Little nicks here and there. It's nice when it's only a few days and you can come back. He's worked his butt off. If anything, it'll just help him have fresh legs."

Williams has a lot to prove this season after the Cowboys gave Terrell Owens the boot this off-season. While the injury doesn't seem to be anything major, it reduces the amount of time Romo and Williams have to work on their timing as they get ready for the season.

After being acquired for draft picks from Detroit last season, Williams had only 19 receptions in ten games with the Cowboys. He had a career year in 2006 when he had 82 receptions for 1310 yards and seven touchdowns.

T.O. hopes to show other side with reality show

VH1s Premiere Party For The T.O. Show

Buffalo Bills receiver Terrell Owens, who was released by the Cowboys this off-season, hopes that the world sees a different side of T.O. when his new reality series begins airing tomorrow on VH-1.

"Terrell you'll see pretty much on this show," Owens said. "It's pretty much to the 'T' of how I am. I mean, it's reality."

Jesse Ignjatovic, who's the producer of the show, was surprised by how much T.O. let the production crew film.

"What did surprise me is the depth that he was willing to go to in the show emotionally and also reflecting on his own life and shortcomings and things he wants to do to make him a better man," Ignjatovic said. "He really shows some sides of himself and really exposes his emotions in ways that I never thought possible."

T.O. definitely is a me-first player, which is typical of many receivers. But in many ways, T.O. is unfairly criticized in the media.

With the ESPYs to be aired tonight on ESPN, I remember the story from last year's ESPYs about T.O., which didn't seem to get a lot of press (or my memory is shot, or both).

If you don't remember, T.O. came to the rescue of ESPN reporter Sam Alipour and as Alipour wrote, "So, T.O. was nice, huh?" says the medic who took [Alipour's] blood pressure inside the ambulance. "Boy, you think you know somebody, but the media doesn't tell you the whole story. You never know how they really are."

Despite being a nice guy (some times) off the field, T.O.'s me-first attitude (often) makes him a cancer in the locker room.

In Dallas, Owens felt secure with a long-term contract, an owner that enabled him and weak leaders who seemed reluctant to confront him. For those reasons, I still feel cutting T.O. was the right move for the Cowboys' organization as his me-over-the-team attitude divided (or created a bigger division) in the locker room.

On the other hand, I still think the Bills made a good move in getting a very talented albeit aging receiver who will be very motivated to quiet the critics and to land a subsequent contract.

Wade Phillips running a tight ship?

Dallas Cowboys Training Camp

Maybe Coach Cupcake really has changed.

It's a universal belief around NFL circles that Wade Phillips won't be brought back as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2010.

That being said, Phillips is creating a little bit of a buzz with the way he's running the team's defense. In addition to being head coach, Phillips replaced Brian Stewart, who was fired after last season, as defensive coordinator.

Cowboys linebacker Bradie James said the other day that he likes what he's seeing from the new-and-improved Wade Phillips, who promised to be tougher in 2009.

I was skeptical as was James. Then again, who wasn't?

But earlier in the week, James said during his appearance on ESPN Radio 103.3: "Wade is different. Wade is really different, man. ... I've learned so much in the last couple of weeks, just dealing with him during minicamps and OTAs. ... I think I've gained a whole new appreciation for him and the scheme, because there's no middleman now. ... You go straight to the horse's mouth, and he makes the change right here on the field and it stays that way. There's no uncertainty."

This morning, Michael Lombardi wrote in his Sunday at the Post column, "As defensive coordinator, he hasn’t gone easy on the Cowboys’ offense in camp this offseason, sending all sorts of blitzes and seemingly challenging the offense to respond."

Amen.

Even after their high-profile departures (Terrell Owens, Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, etc.) this off-season, the Cowboys are still loaded with talent.

Maybe, just maybe, the competition in practice, camp, etc. will get their competitive juices flowing and we'll finally see them play with some heart.

Jacobs says he's "not of a fan of Tony Romo"

Don't count New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs among the many (albeit diminishing number of) Tony Romo fans.

Jacobs, who appeared on ESPN Radio 1050 in New York, said of the Cowboys quarterback (via Pro Football Talk):

"I don't think he's that good a passer, to be honest with you," Jacobs said.

"I'm not a fan of Tony Romo, no. Keep him in the pocket, he's not that good. . . . His luck will be gone sooner or later. If you were to keep Tony Romo in the pocket he's not that effective."

First off, I'm a Cowboys fan who's not a big Tony Romo fan. But ESPN posted the numbers on SportsCenter showing Romo's splits of passing from the pocket versus out of the pocket.

While I should have jotted them down when I saw them, his numbers are noticeably better when he's passing from the pocket than when he's passing outside the pocket.

That being said, if the Cowboys and Jerry Jones want to have a "Romo-friendly" offense in 2009, they should pound the ball with Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice.

Now that the trio of "Earth, Wind & Fire" have been broken up (Derrick Ward signed with the Bucs), the Cowboys arguably have the league's best trio of running backs.

Greg Ellis says DeMarcus Ware hid so Ellis could play

Ex-Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, who often whined about something when in Dallas, claimed on Michael Irvin's radio show that his Cowboys teammate DeMarcus Ware would try to "hide" to force the coaches to play Ellis, Per Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News.

"It's a disgrace when DeMarcus Ware comes off the field just so I can get in the game and when the coaches tell him to come on the field, he tries to hide so I can play," Ellis said during an appearance on ESPN 103.3's Michael Irvin Show. "And you're telling me we're trying to win the Super Bowl?"

"He would say, 'G, come on.' And I would tell him, 'No, DeMarcus, go ahead, man. You're coming up on your contract year. Don't mess that stuff up. Go ahead and do you, and we're just going to do what the coaches, or whoever the powers that be, what they want to do.'"

As McMahon points out, Ware, who led the NFL in sacks (20) last season, missed hardly any snaps with the exception of late in the Thanksgiving Day game in which he hurt his knee.

Ware, who was one of two first-round picks by Dallas in 2005, is entering the final year on his rookie contract, but the Cowboys and Ware's camp are in negotiations on an extension that will likely make Ware on the of highest-paid players in the league.

Ellis was frustrated by his diminishing role on the team before he was released earlier this off-season. And, apparently he still is bothered by it.

As far as teams "trying to win the Super Bowl," Ellis was signed by the Oakland Raiders, one of the few teams in the league that are more dysfunctional than the Cowboys.

Mike Jenkins is the starter (in his own mind)

Mike Jenkins was named the starting right cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys. Earlier in the week, Jenkins posted on his blog that the job was his. Well, sort-of ... meaning Jenkins believes the job is his.

However, the Cowboys haven't officially designated Jenkins the starting right cornerback.

In a follow-up post on his blog, Jenkins says his statement was due more to confidence, according to Todd Davis of the Dallas Morning News. Jenkins writes:
I’m coming into camp with a chip on my shoulder and I think the job will be mine because of the confidence I have in myself and not because of anything else! Everyone is trying to make this a big issue when this is just a needle in a haystack. The big picture is to win our games no matter who the starter is and make the playoffs.
Jenkins, who was drafted in the first-round in 2008 by the Cowboys, is competing with Orlando Scandrick, who was drafted in the fifth round in 2008, for the starting cornerback vacancy created by Anthony Henry's departure.

June 30, 2009

Mike Jenkins to start at RCB?

The Dallas Morning News has reported that Mike Jenkins is calling the starting right cornerback job his. He did so on his blog:
It’s my job to lose, but there’s a guy behind me with nothing to lose. If he makes a mistake, it’s not going to cause him to lose his job. If I make a mistake, the coaches are going to take a long, hard look at me in that position.

That’s the nature of being a starter in the NFL. You have to keep proving you’re good enough, that you deserve it. Some guys, like Terence Newman, Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuels, they’re solidified. But until you get to that level you have to come out and prove yourself every day.
With Jenkins starting at right corner and Terence Newman starting a left corner, Orlando Scandrick will be the slot corner.

Both Jenkins and Scandrick were drafted last year in the first and fifth rounds, respectively.

Greg Ellis is heading to the Black Hole

Ex-Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, who has been unhappy during the past few off-seasons, and the Oakland Raiders have agreed to a multi-year deal, per Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The Cowboys released Ellis earlier this month and Hill believes that Ellis will move back to defensive end.

Ellis, who was drafted in the first round in 1998, played defensive end in college and for the majority of his NFL career. Ellis transitioned from DE to LB in 2006.

The deal is believed to be for three years although financial terms aren't known. Ellis will turn 34 years old in August.

If he was really as miserable as he seemed in Dallas off-seasons, just imagine how he'll feel in Oakland.

Jerry Jones denies Pacman rumors

This morning, rumors surfaced that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was considering bringing back troubled cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones.

Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, who caught up with Jerry Jones at the George Strait concert Saturday night, wrote that Jerry said that "it is something he is considering" although "nothing is imminent or even in the works."

However, Jerry says "I have no plans to bring Adam back," per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.

"He would love to have another opportunity with the Cowboys," Jones' agent, Worrick Robinson said. "When he left he was hoping that there would be that possibility. I think he was a productive player when he was on the field and the gradings showed that. But when he was released it was certainly disappointing but he knows it's a business."

Despite Jerry Jones downplaying the importance of team chemistry in the past couple of years, the Cowboys have made several moves this off-season to do just that. T.O., Tank Johnson and Pacman are gone.

But bringing back Pacman would have wiped out the gains they have made.

T.O. "could care less" about Romo calling him "he" ...

... And neither could we.

When asked about former teammate and Cowboys QB Tony Romo only referring to Bills WR Terrell Owens with nothing more personal than "he," T.O. said he "could care less."

"Dude, I could care less," Owens said with a laugh following the Buffalo Bills voluntary minicamp practice Wednesday. "I mean, he doesn't mention my name, that's fine. What about it?"

"Bill Parcells didn't call me by my name either, so what's the difference?" he said, referring to the Cowboys former coach who would refer to Owens only as "The player."

Obviously, the reporter was trying to bait Owens into saying something controversial. However, who the f--- cares?

Romo's in Dallas, T.O.'s in Buffalo (albeit not by choice). Move on.

In related news, Romo ran to CVS to buy a Kit-Kat bar. Stop the presses.

May 25, 2009

Can Roy Williams be more consistent than T.O.?

According to Ed Thompson of Scout.com, via FoxSports.com, that is the question to ask.

In the past two seasons, Terrell Owens has put up, in aggregate, big numbers for the Dallas Cowboys.

Owens had a combined 2,407 receiving yards over the past two seasons, but he was inconsistent. Despite his up-and-down performance, T.O. put up really big numbers on those up performances.

Specifically, Owens had 40 yards or more in only half of his games in 2008. Granted, Cowboys QB Tony Romo missed three games last year and Brad Johnson was pitiful as his replacement. However, the trend wasn't much different in 2007, when Romo played in all 16 Cowboys' games.

In 2007, Owens put up 65 percent of his receiving yards from his six best performances. In the other nine games, he averaged only 53 yards per game.

However, looking at his pre-Dallas production, Williams may not be any more consistent than T.O.

In 2007, Williams had less than receiving 50 yards in six of his 12 games. In fact, one quarter of his production came in a 204-yard game against the Eagles in week three.

Cowboys considering trading or cutting Ellis

Per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News, the future of Greg Ellis with the Dallas Cowboys is uncertain. The team is considering the possibility of either trading him or releasing him.

Ellis, who worked with the team's first-team defense on Tuesday at the team's OTA workout, did not attend the team's workout on Thursday.

If they trade him, the move would free up more than $5 million in salary-cap space for the Cowboys. If they cut him, the move would free up $4.15 million in salary-cap space.
"He's looking forward to being a Dallas Cowboy," Ellis' agent, James Williams, said. "Now, if that's going to happen, we don't know. That's not in our control."
Ellis had eight sacks in 2008 in a decreasing role with the Cowboys. Anthony Spencer, the team's first-round pick in 2007, is expected to start opposite DeMarcus Ware at outside linebacker.

Cowboys' Joe DeCamillis released from hospital

Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis, who suffered a broken back during the Cowboys' practice facility collapse, was released from the hospital today.

As his father-in-law Dan Reeves pointed out, DeCamillis is lucky to not be paralyzed after the accident.
"I want to take this opportunity to express my family's overwhelming gratitude to every person that we have come in contact with at Parkland Hospital," DeCamillis said in a statement released by the club on Monday. "The care, professionalism, and support that I received were way beyond outstanding. My family and I look at the outcome of my surgery as both a miracle and a blessing, and we will forever be grateful to every single Parkland employee and emergency medical representative who played a part."
No timetable has been set for his return, however, doctors have indicated that he could do some "light desk-type work" within the next couple of weeks.
"He should be able to go back to light desk-type work in a couple of weeks," Dr. David Barnett, the chief of neurosurgery at Baylor Medical Center, told WFAA-TV in Dallas last Tuesday. "He won't be able to drive for a while, should be out and about walking in a week or two, should be able to go back to work within a month to six weeks."
This is good news for DeCamillis, but unfortunately scout Rich Behm will be permanently paralyzed from the waist down resulting from the collapse of the practice facility.

May 06, 2009

Cowboys' Folk had hip surgery

Per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Cowboys kicker Nick Folk had hip surgery yesterday and he should be ready for training camp.

Folk is expected to resume light kicking in eight weeks.
"They said the worst that could happen is that I'd be 100 percent by the beginning of training camp, so training camp might be just me getting my legs under me," Folk said. "It just kind of sucks that it has to happen now, but we've got time to get it ready."
Folk, who made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season (2007), has made 46 of 53 field goals in his two seasons.

The Cowboys drafted USC kicker David Buehler in the fifth round of this year's draft.

Dallas Cowboys practice facility collapsed

During a thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon, the Dallas Cowboys practice facility collapsed as the team was running day two of their three-day rookie mini-camp.

The Dallas Morning News posted pictures here of the facility.

One of the twelve injured was special teams coach Joe DeCamillas, who is the son-in-law of Dan Reeves.
"It's just lucky and fortunate and a miracle really he's not paralyzed," Reeves told Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.
Of the players injured, Cowboys kicker David Buehler, drafted in the fifth round, required three stitches on his knee and has a concussion.
"My initial thought was, how many people are dead in this? I thought I was the lucky one. Guys were in shock," Buehler said, "and very thankful."
Not unexpectedly, Sunday's practice has been canceled.

DeMarcus Ware: $94 million-dollar man?

The Dallas Cowboys continue to negotiate a long-term deal with DeMarcus Ware that will possibly make him the highest-paid linebacker in NFL history.

Ware says he's not "frustrated" about not having a new deal in place yet.

When a deal is reached, he expects it to fall in between the deal signed by James Harrison ($51.1 million) and Albert Haynesworth ($100 million).
“Harrison texted me right before he signed,” Ware said. “He (will be 31) years old and at the top part of his career right now. That was great that he signed. I’m almost six-years younger than he is. I have longer longevity.”

I feel like (this deal) is somewhere in between,” Ware said. “It’s not $51 (million) and it’s not $100 (million). Maybe it’s $94 (million).”
He's half-joking about the amount ($94 million), but he will certainly cash in. In his four seasons, Ware has improved his sack total each season (8.0 to 11.5 to 14.0 to 20.0).

Greg Ellis' job security takes a hit

Dallas Cowboys LB Greg Ellis will turn 34 years old this summer and is in the final year of his contract. Today the Cowboys drafted two pass-rushers, who could be lower-cost replacements for Ellis, who will count $6.25 million towards the salary cap.

In the fourth round, the Cowboys selected Oregon State's Victor Butler (110th overall) and Texas Tech's Brandon Williams (120th overall).

Per Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News, cutting Ellis would save the Cowboys $4.15 million against the salary cap. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says Ellis is on the roster "right now."
"...I know he had that same concern when Spencer came in. He had that same concern when he moved over (from defensive end to outside linebacker). And that's rightfully so. I think the world of Greg, but anything we do there one way or the other, I don't want him to read about it. I want to sit down and talk to him about it."
It sounds like Greg Ellis' days in Dallas are numbered. Gag order coming?

Miles Austin signs tender

Dallas Cowboys receiver (and restricted free agent) Miles Austin signed his one-year tender that will guarantee him a 2009 salary of $1.545 million.

Austin also was being courted by the New York Jets, with whom he had a visited earlier in the month. If the Jets had made an offer to Austin, the Cowboys would have had the ability to match the offer. Otherwise, the Jets would have had to send their second-round pick (52 overall) to the Cowboys as compensation.

The team was negotiating a long-term deal with Austin, but they didn't agree on the value of the deal.
"On your second contract, you get paid off what you've done, not what you might do," Stephen Jones said.
Austin, who has big-play potential, had 13 receptions for 278 yards and three touchdowns.

Philly judge hates the Cowboys

Per John Gonzalez of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Judge Patrick Dugan used his passion for football and hatred of the Dallas Cowboys in his campaign.

On fliers for his campaign, one of his accomplishments listed includes "HATES the Dallas Cowboys."
"I've hated the Dallas Cowboys my entire life. When the Eagles beat the Cowboys in 1981 for the NFC championship, I was there. I was there with 15 buddies at the top of the Vet. It was like we won the Super Bowl."
As a reminder to Dugan, the Philadelphia Eagles have never won a Super Bowl. However, his hated Cowboys have five rings. (Complete Super Bowl results history)

Cowboys fan knocks out Cowboys hater in D.C.

Who says the Dallas Cowboys have no heart?

It's not true. While it may not necessarily apply to their players, it definitely applies to their fans.

In D.C., someone snatched a Cowboys' flag off a car and threw it down on the ground. The Cowboys' fan then took matters in his own hands.
One witness said she saw a "big tall man walk up to this guy and hit him across the head." Then, she said, the tall man "got back in his car and drove off."

"He was out cold for a good five minutes or so," the witness said.

Seeing a (presumably) Redskins fan get what he deserves: priceless.

Jets won't make offer to Miles Austin

When Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released Terrell Owens, he said that the development of Miles Austin was a key factor in his decision.

Austin, who is a restricted free agent, visited with the New York Jets last week. Although he left New Jersey without an offer, it was reported that the Jets were interested in making an offer to Austin.

However, the Jets have decided to not extend an offer to Austin per Rich Cimini of the Daily News.

If the Jets made an offer to Austin, the Cowboys would have had seven days to match the offer sheet. If they didn't, they would have received the Jets' second-round pick as compensation for the loss.

If/when Austin signs his tender offer with the Cowboys, he will earn a guaranteed salary of $1.545 million for 2009.

USC WR Patrick Turner to visit Titans, Cowboys

Per Ed Thompson of Scout.com, USC wide receiver Patrick Turner will visit with a pair of NFL teams next week. He is scheduled to visit with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday and with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday and Friday.

Turner is a big receiver (6'5" and 223 pounds) that has good hands. However, he is not very fast (4.70 40 time).

In his three seasons with SoCal, Turner recorded 138 receptions for 1752 yards and 17 touchdowns. Last season, Turner had a career-high 10 touchdowns.

Scout.com ranks Turner as the 20th best WR in this year's class and he won't be drafted until the later rounds.

April 10, 2009

If Jets make offer to Austin, should Cowboys match?

The New York Jets are interested in Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin, who is a restricted free agent.

If the Jets make an offer to Austin, the Cowboys will have seven days to match the Jets' offer or the Jets will have to provide second-round compensation (overall pick 52) in this year's draft.

If Austin signs his tender with the Cowboys, he will earn $1.545 million guaranteed in 2009.

One of the factors in Jerry Jones' decision to part ways with Terrell Owens, who signed a one-year deal with Buffalo, is the development of Austin.

Per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys need to match almost any offer that the Jets make to Austin since he knows the system and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and QB Tony Romo know Austin.

Austin, an undrafted big (6'3") receiver, has shown glimpses of his ability to make plays throughout the season even though he only had 13 receptions for 278 yards in 12 games in 2008.

Witten talks about T.O. and Romo

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten spoke to Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram at a charity event for the March of Dimes.
"I think more than anything being 9-7 is unacceptable with this team," Witten said. "When you talk about change, you want to find a way to get more wins."
Hill asked Witten about T.O.
"...Terrell was a great player. I think I was a better player because of him and what he brought to the team. His track record speaks for itself. He has been good wherever he has been. He is going to help Buffalo a lot."
While T.O.'s presence led to single coverage for Witten and the other receivers, Witten has to be thrilled to not have to deal with Owens' paranoia and whining.

He was also asked if T.O.'s departure makes Romo and the locker room environment better.
"...Everybody has got good chemistry when you win. For all of us it's something we have to evaluate and understand. I don't want to look at it and say we are a better locker room. We got a lot of good football players. I do think that. We got to go show it. We got to stop talking about it."
Chemistry isn't critical when you're winning. But when you face adversity, you need to be able to rely on your teammates. The Cowboys couldn't count on each other when their annual December collapse began last year.

Witten's 2008 numbers, 81 receptions for 952 yards and four touchdowns, were off his 2007 career highs. During a span of four weeks from week 8 to 12, Witten had only four receptions in four games. He broke his rib against the Buccaneers in week 8.

T.O. "blindsided" by Cowboys' release

There was plenty of debate on whether the Dallas Cowboys should have released Terrell Owens, who leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns (38) over the past three seasons. So much so that Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones issued a "gag order" for his coaching staff including Jones' puppet head coach Wade Phillips.

The debate boiled down to: did T.O.'s production on the football field outweigh his antics in the locker room? Ultimately, the answer to that question, as determined by Jones, was no.

Owens, who signed a one-year contract with Buffalo, shared his thoughts on the subject with Rogers Sportsnet.
"You hear all the speculation, and you talk to the owner of the team, and he reassures you, you're not going anywhere and then, out of left-field … you get blindsided."

"I know whole-heartedly he [Jerry Jones] wanted me there," Owens said. "There were some people I know who got in his ear that pressured him to make that decision. For that, it's sad. You let two or three people conspire to get me out of the situation."
Jones, however, did not have any comments about T.O.'s conspiracy theory.
"I don't have anything to say, but we have a great relationship," Jones said. "I'm sorry we didn't get this year in on the contract, but I don't have any pointed comment to what he said that there were people within the organization that didn't want him here. I read the substance of [the comments]. Bottom line is I don't really have any comments."
Last June, Jones made a huge mistake by giving T.O. a contract extension. With the perceived security of being under contract for another four years, it was easy for Owens to revert to his divisive ways that led to his departure in San Francisco and Philadelphia.

While I believe T.O. would have continued to be a "locker room cancer" in Dallas had he not been released, Buffalo is getting a bargain. Owens, who will earn $6.5 million with the Bills, has no choice but to perform at his best while toeing the company line. If he doesn't, he'll be shooting himself in the foot for his next deal.

Zach Thomas' wife mistreated by same officer as Moats

The story of Ryan Moats' delay at the hospital of his dying mother-in-law by Dallas PD officer Robert Powell is well-documented.

Powell has since issued an apology to the Moats' family. But it appears as though Powell's abuse of authority in the Moats' situation is not an isolated incident.

Maritza Thomas, wife of Cowboys free-agent LB Zach Thomas, had a run-in with Powell last year. She was charged with traffic violations (illegal U-turn, running a red light, improper address on a driver's license, etc.), handcuffed and spent three hours in a Dallas County jail.
"This in no way compares to what happened to Ryan Moats and his family," said Zach Thomas, who played for the Cowboys last season and is now a free agent. "But we wanted to tell our story, not knowing how many others have been affected by Officer Powell. We know the vast majority of the Dallas police force are good and professional people, but this guy just seems excessive."
I'm not a police officer nor an attorney, but to spend time in jail for those kind of traffic violations makes no sense to me. It doesn't make any sense to Brody Shanklin, Thomas' attorney, either.
"This situation never should've happened," said Maritza Thomas' attorney, Brody Shanklin. "Unless extraordinary circumstances exist, no person should be arrested for a Class C citation. In this case, it was an example of Officer Powell being overzealous and exerting his authority in a manner that he never should have."
However, Judge C. Victor Lander says that Texas law allows an arrest to be made for any Class C misdemeanor traffic violation except speeding and having an open container. However, that those instances are "relatively rare" unless the person stopped has unpaid parking tickets.

Cowboys shopped Bobby Carpenter

Per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Cowboys have shopped ILB Bobby Carpenter.

However, Archer points out that the Cowboys are less likely to trade Carpenter, the franchise's first-round pick in 2006, since they lost free agent Kevin Burnett to the San Diego Chargers last month.

In the off-season, the Cowboys signed Keith Brooking, who will start with Bradie James. Without Burnett, Carpenter would be the team's top back-up ILB.

Carpenter is scheduled to earn a base salary of $885,000 in 2009, but a playing-time incentive bonus of $1.895 million in his contract could make it difficult to trade Carpenter.

Carpenter has been a huge disappointment. The Cowboys should cut their losses (whether by trade or releasing the player) and find a replacement in this year's draft. It shouldn't be too difficult to find someone to be as (un)productive as "Barbie", who has been credited with only seven tackles in the past two seasons.

Zimmer says Williams has "good workout"

Two weeks ago, the Dallas Cowboys released safety Roy Williams. Yesterday, he worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals and Mike Zimmer, his former defensive coordinator.
"It was a good workout. I wanted to evaluate him from when I remembered him," Zimmer said. "He's still got some quickness."
Williams earned four Pro Bowl appearances in Zimmer's 4-3 defensive scheme, where he was allowed to play closer to the line of scrimmage. Williams made the Pro Bowl in 2007 after Zimmer switched to a 3-4 defense. Under the 3-4 scheme utilized by Wade Phillips, Williams has often gotten burned in coverage.

After breaking his forearm, Williams only played three games in 2008. In his career, he has 512 tackles in 98 games, 6.5 sacks and 19 interceptions.

March 10, 2009

Does Sensabaugh signing make sense?

The Dallas Cowboys signed safety Gerald Sensabaugh to a one-year deal. With the exception of free safety Ken Hamlin, the Cowboys had little depth and experience at the safety position.

On the field, signing Sensabaugh makes sense. He started 13 games (10 at SS, 3 at FS) for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008. Sensabaugh had 70 tackles and 4 interceptions last year.

But the Cowboys have begun an effort to clean up their locker room by parting ways with Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson and Terrell Owens. This signing bucks that trend.

Sensabaugh has been busted in each of the past 3 off-seasons. I suppose the good news for Cowboys' fans is that he has already been arrested this off-season. If past performance is any indication, that means he will stay out of jail until the 2010 off-season. In other words, after his one-year contract has expired.

As a 5th-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2005 NFL draft, Sensabaugh has played for Cowboys secondary coach Dave Campo and special teams coach Joe DeCamillis in Jacksonville.

March 07, 2009

Cowboys sign Igor Olshansky

The Dallas Cowboys lost Chris Canty to (and replaced him through) free agency. The Cowboys have signed Igor Olshansky to a 4-year, $18 million contract with $8 million guaranteed.

He has played for Wade Phillips, who the Chargers defensive coordinator in Olshansky's first 3 seasons in the league (2004-2006).

Olshansky, drafted by the Chargers in the 2nd round of the 2004 NFL draft, has 11 career sacks in his 5 seasons.

March 05, 2009

Cowboys release safety Roy Williams

In addition to releasing Terrell Owens, the Cowboys let go of safety Roy Williams.
"Roy has been a wonderful representative of this organization since coming to Dallas," said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. "Unfortunately, we have reached a crossroad with his time here in Dallas, and the difficult decision was made to allow him to explore other opportunities in the NFL."
The move was long expected due to Williams' difficulty in pass coverage. In fact, Williams demanded that the Cowboys either trade or release him "today" (on Tuesday).

Although he said it was taken out of context, CB Terence Newman once criticized Williams' coverage skills.
"The funny thing is, coming into his rookie year, I think Roy had five picks and showed he could cover," Newman said. "He's the same guy, I just think sometimes he gets a deer-in-the-headlights type of reaction to some plays. Not everybody's going to have a perfect season. He had a bad season last year, as far as coverage."
Since being drafted by the Cowboys with the 8th overall pick in 2002, Williams has 512 tackles, 56 passes defensed, 19 interceptions and 6 1/2 sacks.

The Cowboys part ways Terrell Owens

The Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with Terrell Owens, the diva WR and locker-room cancer.

From a salary-cap perspective, cutting T.O. is actually more expensive ($9.675 million) than if he played in Big D ($8.995 million) in 2009.

As you may have already known (if you're one of the 5 readers of The Daily Blitz), you know that I have supported the move to cut Owens.

Owens, the 49ers 3rd-round pick in 1996, was undoubtedly productive on the field. In his 3 years in Dallas, Owens had 3 1,000-yard seasons and scored 38 receiving TDs. Although he certainly dropped his share of balls, no NFL WR caught as many TD passes during T.O.'s tenure in Dallas.

Despite his on-field productivity, he was equally counter-productive in the locker room. T.O. was a disruptive and dividing force in the locker room.

As a Cowboys fan, I care much less about where he will go than I do about where he won't be (Dallas) in 2009. But if you want to see a full list of places that have officially rejected of the notion of T.O. playing in their city, check out PFT's The Anti-T.O. List.

Cowboys trade for Kitna, sign Brooking

When Tony Romo got hurt and missed 3 games last year, the Cowboys were lucky to go 1-2 in his absence. In fact, their one win during that span was the team's worst offensive output (172 total offensive yards) in a Cowboys' victory.

Brad Johnson, who started those 3 games, was let go this week. So the Cowboys have traded for Jon Kitna, who will back up Tony Romo. In return, the Lions get CB Anthony Henry, who started all 16 games last year.

I'm not sure why Jerry Jones made this move. The Lions were going to release Kitna, who was due a $1 million roster bonus next week. It's an upgrade over the departed Johnson, but who isn't? JJ could have waited a week while not giving up a decent corner.

Henry will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Mike Jenkins or Orlando Scandrick.

Separately, the Cowboys signed free-agent LB Keith Brooking, who has played his entire high school, collegiate and NFL career in Atlanta. Brooking has had a working relationship with Wade Phillips, who was Falcons defensive coordinator in 2002-2003.

Brooking agreed to a 3-year deal worth $6 million, of which $2.5 million is guaranteed.

LBs Zach Thomas and Kevin Burnett are both free agents.

At the end of the 2006 season, Jon Kitna called out the Cowboys' defense (specifically Terence Newman and Bradie James) on a Seattle radio show before the Cowboys' playoff game against the Seahawks. This was James' reaction:
"Y'all can ask me about Jon Kitna every day from here on out the rest of my life and I will get fired up," James said then. "He talked like we weren't ever going to play them again."
The plot thickens for Hard Knocks Dos...

2nd-round tenders for 4 Cowboys RFAs

The Dallas Cowboys have placed 2nd-round tenders on 4 of their restricted free agents: WRs Miles Austin and Sam Hurd, OL Cory Procter and DE Stephen Bowen.

The Cowboys will pay all 4 players a 2009 salary of $1.545 million unless another team signs them. If another team signs any of the players, they would have to compensate the Cowboys with a 2nd-round pick.

TE Tony Curtis will become an unrestricted free agent.

Brad Johnson out, Rex Grossman in?

The Dallas Cowboys have released QB Brad Johnson. Johnson was scheduled to earn a $2 million salary and was due a $500,000 roster bonus.

When starter Tony Romo was hurt, Johnson looked awful as his replacement. The Cowboys were 1-2, but the win against the Bucs had more to do with the Cowboys defense winning the game in spite of Johnson's performance.

The Cowboys had only 172 yards, the franchise's lowest total ever in a win, in that game including 122 yards passing by Johnson.

The Chicago Bears aren't going to re-sign QB Rex Grossman, who has said that the Cowboys would be the ideal place to be a "back up."
"They've got all the talent at running back, tight end, wide receiver, offensive line, coordinator. They've got everything in place that you'd want. Good weather, new stadium. I'm sure they are going to cover it if it is windy or cold. So that would be the ideal situation to back up. There may be a few others, I'm not sure, but that would be intriguing if I'm in a situation where I have to back up."
Brooks Bollinger, who was moved to 2nd on the depth chart last season, is scheduled to become a free agent.

ESPN won't bring back Emmitt Smith

Emmitt Smith is/was great at a lot of things.

He's the NFL's all-time leading rusher (see top 15) and will certainly be a first-ballot Hall of Famer next year when he becomes eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

And a couple of years ago, Smith won ABC's Dancing with the Stars with partner Cheryl Burke.

However, he wasn't great at everything. Especially not as an analyst for ESPN, who has decided to not bring back Emmitt next season.
"We thank Emmitt for his contributions to ESPN and work ethic the past two years. We wish him all the best," ESPN spokesman Bill Hoffheimer said.
For a man used to being featured on the "highlights," here are some of his broadcasting "lowlights" from Walter Football's "The Emmitt Smith Anthology" with his commentary:
"If it slip in Week 1, it slip in Week 8." (Commentary: I don't know what slip in Week 1, but clearly the same thing happened in Week 8. Let's just hope that when it slip in Week 15, the verb is actually conjugated.)

"The Jets can only be disrespected by every team in the league" (Commentary: What the hell does that mean? Seriously?)

"The way you perform make them feel about you different." (Commentary: I think Emmitt's brain gathers the words he wants to use and rearranges them randomly.)

"When you are the single or the lone ranger, so to speak." (Commentary: The Single Ranger? Sounds like some porn movie. And who says, "When you are the lone ranger, so to speak?" Who speaks that way, exactly?)

"You cannot change the stripes of a leopard." (Commentary: Now, Emmitt, repeat after me. A cow says moooo...)

"That can be a swing their way eventually. I just hate to be the team that they winned it against." (Commentary: Let's see... butcher the English language, add an article where you don't need one and make up a word called "winned." Just another day in the life of Emmitt.)
As a life-long Cowboys fan, it's good to see Emmitt leave the studio. There are other ex-NFL players who are broadcasters and bad at it, but Emmitt took it to a whole new level.

Jerry Jones to be only voice from Big D

Cowboys idiot owner Jerry Jones, who lately has been making Raiders owner Al Davis look sharp, has issued a gag order for all Dallas Cowboys coaches.

It's not uncommon for a head coach to be the voice of the team like Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, etc. have. But for an owner to tell a head coach that he can't talk to the media is ridiculous.

Arriving at his hotel in Indy for this weekend's NFL Scouting Combine, Phillips on Thursday wouldn't talk to the media.
“Can’t,” he said. “Against the rules.”
When singing the praises of coaches, we talk about the coach putting his players in position to succeed. Whether or not Phillips has done that is open to debate. However, a successful owner should do the same thing. Put their coaches in a position to succeed.

Instead, everything that Jones does undermines Phillips' authority and his ability to keep the team under control. The 2009 Cowboys may play in a new stadium, but it seems like it's still going to be the same old shit crap.

Cowboys are 1 of 4 teams on Peppers' list

The Carolina Panthers won't be able to sign Pro Bowl DE Julius Peppers to a long-term deal. And he has unequivocally stated that he wants out of Carolina.

So if the Panthers franchise Peppers, which would be likely if they work out a long-term deal with tackle Jordan Gross, Peppers will request a trade.

Today we know a little more about where he would like to go. He said there are 4 teams for whom he'd be willing to play.

The only team he specifically named is the Dallas Cowboys. Reportedly, the other 3 are one AFC team and 2 NFC South rivals.

As Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News points out, it would be difficult for the Cowboys to work out a deal without a first-round pick (traded to Detroit for WR Roy Williams) to trade and the Cowboys' intention to make DeMarcus Ware one of the league's highest-paid defensive players.

Wade Phillips to be Cowboys defensive coordinator (too)

The Dallas Cowboys' defense was solid in 2009. They ranked 1st in sacks (59), 8th in total defense (294.3 ypg) and tied for 19th in scoring defense (22.8 ppg).

In the middle of last season, head coach Wade Phillips took over play-calling responsibilities from defensive coordinator Brian Stewart, who was fired this off-season.

The team had 20 sacks with Stewart calling the plays in their first 7 games and 39 sacks in their final 9 games.

Today, Jerry Jones announced that the team won't hire a defensive coordinator and Phillips will assume those responsibilities. Phillips is one of the best (as a DC) in the league.

But the Cowboys still need a take-charge leader that can control their dysfunctional locker room.

Jones beats around bush about T.O.

First off, Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones is an idiot. Being successful in business doesn't automatically make you qualified to run a football team. To market it, perhaps. To make football decisions, no.

In the Jerry Jones era, the Cowboys have been successful when they had either Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells on the payroll. Even shortly after those guys left, the team felt the residual effects of what they had built. Both have something Jones does not - a great football mind.

That being said, today Jones talked in circles about his divisive diva WR, a.k.a. "The Player", Terrell Owens. But does his not really saying anything say it all?
"You and I both know that the one [player] you're asking about all the time, if I gave you the answer that you want to hear, then you would have already had it," Jones said. "So the fact you don't have it ought to tell you something."
If you ask the Dallas Morning News' Tim Colishaw, it does. And I agree with him.

So, T.O. is going to be back in Big D. As Colishaw points out, should you really expect Jones to take a $9.6 million salary-cap hit to part ways with his best WR?

No. But Jones is responsible for the mess the team is in. He gave T.O. a 3-year contract extension last off-season. If he hadn't, T.O.'s contract would have been up and a decision could have been made with only football considerations.

And Jones has helped to sap the organization of strong leadership to keep the trouble-making WR in check. Perhaps Parcells' refusal to call the "Player" or "#81" by name wasn't the solution to dealing with T.O., but Phillips softer, gentler approach isn't the best way to handle the ultra-sensitive, emotionally-explosive diva either.

No naming deal for new Cowboys stadium?

Considering the economic environment, it's not surprising that the Dallas Cowboys may not sell naming rights in time to open up their new $1.1 billion facility in Arlington.
"Chances are, there are offers, but they are coming in well below what the Cowboys want," said naming rights consultant Terry Burton, who is not involved with the negotiations.
A few years back, the Mets and Nets worked out 20-year, $400 million naming right deals with Citigroup and Barclays Capital.

But those deals were negotiated in better economic times, in the world's largest media market and both companies were major financiers for those projects.
"The new construction has given a whole different angle to naming rights," [E.J.] Narcise [who negotiated $310 million Reliant Stadium deal] said. "It's no longer just an advertising vehicle. It's a business-to-business opportunity. And so those bars [in New York], I believe, have been artificially raised to that level. And quite frankly, it's given a quite skewed value of naming rights."
Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones and team spokesman Brett Daniels aren't discussing progress in negotiations.

Is Barbi headed to South Beach?

Bill Parcells is known for bringing in his guys.

He did it with QB Chad Pennington, who was his QB when the two were with the Jets. He did it with Tony Sparano, who was his offensive line coach in Dallas.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald suggests that the next Parcells' guy might be Barbi Bobbi Carpenter, who was drafted in the first-round of the 2006 draft when Parcells was still in Dallas. Carpenter's father, Rob, was a FB with on the Parcells' Giants teams.

If Dallas and Miami work out a deal for Carpenter, who has been labeled a bust, the Cowboys would likely get a 6th- or 7th-round pick in return.

If anyone's going to get something out of Carpenter, it would be Parcells. And the Cowboys would probably get more out of a late-round draft pick than they get out of this former first-rounder.

In 3 seasons, Carpenter has 50 career tackles and 1.5 career sacks.

Stephen Jones doesn't deny T.O. rumors

Clarence Hill from the Star-Telegram saw Dallas Cowboys VP Stephen Jones, son of owner Jerry, at the Mavs-Bulls game Saturday night. In Hill's attempt to ask Jones about Terrell Owens' future in Dallas, Jones replied "no comment."

Since reports indicate that Jones is trying to persuade his father to part ways with the polarizing, outspoken WR, Hill says that the "no comment" comment means that it must be true.

The Cowboys have plenty of problems from Tony Romo (too many mistakes and lack of leadership and focus) to Jason Garrett (predictable play-calling) to Wade Phillips (too nice to control circus atmosphere) to, most of all, Jerry Jones (too big of an ego to let real football people run football ops).

Before the Giants-Cowboys game on December 14th, I argued that the Cowboys should move on without Owens. So unless the Cowboys can add a real leader, such as Ray Lewis, the Cowboys should get rid of Owens, who is too much of a divisive force the locker room.

Dan Reeves won't join Cowboys

In what seemed like a done deal between the Dallas Cowboys and Dan Reeves, Reeves left Valley Ranch yesterday.
"...There were some things in there I couldn't see being in there, and they were important to him. He made a lot of concessions, but this was something that was important to him, and I just didn't feel like I could live with it. So it didn't make sense for us to go forward."
As Pro Football Talk (PFT) points out, Jones and Reeves have a difference in opinions on the sticking point that led Reeves to leave Dallas.
"We may not be on the same page regarding the type of commitment that we're talking about here," Jerry Jones said.

"I fully intended and told them that I would work," Reeves said. "It was a full-time job. A full-time job to me means that you work as long as it takes to get the job done."

"Though the parting is being peddled as amicable, we think that a deal didn’t get accomplished here because, at a fundamental level, Reeves simply didn’t trust Jones," according to PFT.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that he's in full control - always has been and always will.
"Not one time with any head coach in 23 years does anyone have an authority to hire a football player, fire a football player, draft a football player, hire a coach, an assistant coach," Jerry said. "In 20 years, not one coach has ever had it. I've always had it. I want to make that clear."
That statement by Jones is the exact and simple reason behind the Cowboys problems. While he may be an astute businessman, Jones is running this franchise into the ground.

Although his ego prevents him from doing what is necessary, Jones needs to step aside and let real football guys run the show.

Terry Glenn arrested last month

Terry Glenn was arrested at an Extended Stay Deluxe Hotel in Irving on January 25th and charged with public intoxication and possession of marijuana under two ounces.
"I guess he was going up and down the halls," [Irving Police spokesman David] Tull said.
Glenn also had traffic warrants outstanding in Roanoke for speeding, expired registration and two warrants for failure to appear.

Glenn didn't play in 2008 was missed the entire 2007 regular season with a right knee injury. He played in the divisional round playoff game against the Giants.

Glenn has 593 career receptions for 8823 receiving yards and 44 TDs. He never had a 100-reception season although Glenn had four 1000-yard seasons.

Lucille Hester, not the sister of Bob Hayes?

When Dallas Cowboys WR Bob Hayes was finally selected as a member to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a letter that Hayes wrote to be read at the announcement ceremony was read by Lucille Hester, Hayes' sister.

But is she really Hayes' sister?
“We’ve been trying to tell anyone who will listen that Lucille Hester might have been Bob’s friend, but that she didn’t really become a close friend until Bob was on his death bed,’’ says Ted McIntosh, who says he was Hayes’ business manager and best friend since college and is the godfather to Hayes' only son. “She’s inventing stories. She’s a fraud. The family has tried to tell anyone who will listen. But nobody will listen.’’

“I was married to Bob for 11 years,’’ Janice Hayes-Mohl of Dallas. “I’ve met Lucille. Bob never introduced her as his ‘sister.’ He always said he was his ‘play-sister,’ like it was something from childhood. It is certain news to me and to Bob’s real (siblings) that Lucille (was) suddenly their new sister.''
And when Hayes passed away, this was the obituary in the New York Times on September 20, 2002:
He is survived by a son, Bob Jr. of Dallas; four daughters, Glenda Moore and Dr. Westine Lodge of Jacksonville, Veronica Jenkins of Somerville, N.J., and Adrienne Thomas of Dallas; his mother, Mary Robinson; a brother, Ernest; a sister, Lena Johnson, all of Jacksonville, and eight grandchildren.
No mention of a sister named Lucille.

The report on scout.com goes on to say that Bob Hayes Jr is "painfully shy," but Janice Hayes-Mohl says it should be Bob Jr. on the stage (if he wants to be) when his father is inducted.
“We’ve got to do something before Aug. 8,’’ says Bob’s ex-wife, Janice Hayes-Mohl. “I think Bob Jr. should probably be on that stage, if he wants to be, if he’s up to it, to accept his father’s (Hall of Fame) jacket. As it’s going, I bet Lucille thinks she’s going to wear that jacket around.’’
The report shows two photos - a Bob Hayes' autographed picture and the letter supposably written by Hayes. The signatures are very dissimilar.

With Hayes' best friend and ex-wife saying she's not family and no mention in Hayes' obituary, it seems McIntosh is right. Hester is an imposter.
