Colts and Brackett agree to five-year deal

The Indianapolis Colts and linebacker Gary Brackett have agreed to a five-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

As pointed out by Pro Football Talk, Brackett was the only free agent that the Colts were in danger of losing. Based on the current Collective Bargaining Agreement and their finish in the 2010 season, they won't be able to sign any unrestricted free agents since they won't be losing any first.

Vinnie Iyers of the Sporting News ranked Brackett as the third-best free agent available for this off-season behind Karlos Dansby and Julius Peppers.

Last year, Brackett had 99 tackles and one sack in 14 games. Over the past five seasons of his seven-year career, Brackett has averaged nearly 113 tackles per season.

ESPN reports Freeney has torn ligament

Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Meanwhile the Colts claim that Freeney has a low-ankle sprain -- not a torn ligament.

“He is under the care of our athletic training staff,” [Colts spokesman Craig] Kelley said. “Nothing we have seen changes our diagnosis that he is questionable. He has a third-degree, low basketball sprain.”

Freeney has been in South Florida since Friday to start treatments on his ankle and he has been using a hyperbaric chamber.

"Dwight is one of our best players, we know that," Colts quarterback Peyton Manning said from the Pro Bowl. "But all season long Coach Caldwell has talked about picking up the bayonet. Someone's got to step up. If Dwight were not to be able to go that would be tough, but somebody else will step up and we'll feel confident in whoever that is."

If Freeney can't play, that would likely mean a larger role for Raheem Brock.

I’m sure he’ll give it a go,’’ a source of Mike Chappell from the Indianapolis Star said of Freeney.

One of the keys for both teams in Super Bowl XLIV will be to apply pressure on the opposing quarterback as both Manning and Drew Brees of New Orleans are as deadly accurate as any quarterback in the league. With completion percentages of 70.6 and 68.8 percent, Brees and Manning finished first and second in the NFL, respectively.

Earlier in the week, Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said of Manning, “This guy’s got a great clock in his head. The big thing is that he throws the ball so early that we’re going to have to do a good job of finding ways to get to him and when we do get to him we’re going to have to make sure he gets a couple ‘remember me’ shots when we get there ...”

Brees and Manning have been sacked only 20 and 10 times this season, respectively.

Freeney led the Colts and finished third in the league in sacks this season with 13.5 while teammate Robert Mathis finished with 9.5 sacks this year.

Reggie Wayne about to check in at Revis Island

Colts receiver Reggie Wayne is looking forward to the "challenge" of facing Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, who finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting.

In the first matchup, the Colts pulled their starters in the third quarter and Wayne finished with three catches for 33 yards.

"It was an adventure on Revis Island, I guess," Wayne said, per the Indianapolis Star. "It was fun. One thing about Revis is he's going to challenge you. He's going to make you play your best. That's all you can ask for. I accept that challenge."

With no disrespect intended for Green Bay cornerback Charles Woodson, who won the Defensive Player of the Year award, I believe Revis is the league's best "shutdown corner" (even if New England's Randy Moss takes exception to that phrase).

Revis, who called Moss a "slouch," said: "You got to play 60 minutes if you are going to play against us. You can't sit here and play 45. It doesn't happen like that. You got to compete. That's is what it's about. When you're not competing - come on now. Let's compete. If they score five touchdowns on me, I'm going to give him his respect."

In addition to shutting down Moss (nine catches for 58 yards in two games), Revis shut down several other elite receivers this season.

Revis shut down Houston's Andre Johnson (four catches for 35 yards), Buffalo's Terrell Owens (six catches for 44 yards in two games), Carolina's Steve Smith (one catch for five yards) and Cincinnati's Chad Ochocinco (two catches for 28 yards in two games).

Wayne is one of my favorite receivers in the league. He's as talented of a receiver as there is in the league but he's not a trash-talker and perhaps doesn't get the credit he deserves because of his quiet demeanor.

This season, Wayne finished with 100 receptions for 1,264 yards and 10 touchdowns.

While Revis wasn't exclusively on San Diego's Vincent Jackson last week, he may not cover Wayne exclusively this week.

Earlier in the week, Revis said, "Yeah, my job is going to be tough once again. I'll be moving around on Reggie Wayne and (Pierre) Garcon, and probably a couple other receivers as well."

That said, as Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star points out, Revis covered Wayne on all 39 plays in their first matchup.

For the Colts to beat the Jets today, they will likely need for receivers not named Reggie to have solid games today as it's unlikely that Wayne gets much more than 50 yards against Revis.

Rex Ryan: "... just do-do-do-don't panic"

Perhaps he's a bit (or a lot) of a loud-mouth. But one thing's for sure: he's always entertaining.

And as Ohm Youngmisuk of the NY Daily News points out, it's his personality that keeps the team confident and prevents them from getting too tight.

"I always say this, 'Whatever you guys do, just do-do-do-don't panic,'" Ryan stammered (via the NY Daily News). "We are not going to panic. No, never. There might be some concerns. But I never feel like that. I mean, I'm excited."

"Oh, go have fun, let's go, play the position, have some fun," Ryan said (about what he told rookie QB Mark Sanchez). "Just because every kid in the world dreams to be in this spot, don't let it affect you."

And while Rex Ryan is brash and a trash-talker, the other rookie coach in tomorrow's game (Jim Caldwell) is the complete opposite.

He works with a lot of class,” Colts linebacker Clint Session said. “He doesn’t need to talk about it. He is about it. That’s what’s rubbed off on all his players. We go about it the same way.”

While the Colts are accustomed to post-season appearances and have a coach on the field at QB in Peyton Manning, they need a steady hand to run the show. For the Jets, on the other hand, they have limited to no playoff experience and a rookie quarterback, who will be expected to manage the game.

That said, Ryan and Caldwell may be polar opposites, but they are the same in that both of their styles are perfect for their respective teams.

Shaun Ellis to play with broken hand vs Colts

Despite breaking his hand on the first play of the Chargers game, Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis will play against the Colts in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday.

In fact, he continued to play on third downs against the Chargers after he had broken it. Mike Ellis played on first and second downs.

Ellis will have surgery after this week's game since he says that "the skin would burst back open" [if he had surgery this week] "so I have to suck it up, cast it up again and just go out there and play."

If the Jets beat the Colts, Ellis will be able to play in the Super Bowl with two weeks rest.

Ellis finished second on the team in sacks (six) in 2009.

Colts beat Brandon Marshall 28-16 for record 22nd straight win

The Indianapolis Colts have now won 22 consecutive games, which is an NFL record, including their 13th straight to start 2009 by beating the Broncos Brandon Marshall 28-16.

Marshall finished the day with a record of his own hauling in 21 receptions for 200 yards and two touchdowns. The previous mark of 20 receptions was set by Terrell Owens.

In the process of starting 13-0, the Colts have clinched home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

Coach Jim Caldwell has stated that the goal is not to finish undefeated, but the Colts final three opponents are the Jaguars, the Jets and Bills. They are likely to be favored in all of their remaining games even if Jim Sorgi is starting at quarterback.

Meanwhile, the Saints have matched the Colts with a 13-0 start and will face the Cowboys, the Buccaneers and the Panthers.

Fantasy Football: Week 14 WR Start'em

Here are four wide receivers that could have a big week in week 14:

Derrick Mason, Ravens (vs Lions): In need of a bounce-back game, Ravens QB Joe Flacco will get just what the doctor ordered: the Lions' pass defense. And Derrick Mason, his top target, should be thankful. Last week, Mason caught only two passes for 13 yards. In the previous two games, however, Mason caught 16 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. No team has allowed more passing yards (274.8 ypg) or more passing TDs (28) than the Lions this season.

Pierre Garcon, Colts (vs Broncos): While Reggie Wayne is being covered by Champ Bailey, Garcon could be the receiver getting the most looks on Sunday. In the past four weeks, Garcon has 20 receptions for 357 yards and two TDs. In all four games during that span, Garcon has posted double-digit fantasy points.

Chad Ochocinco, Bengals (vs Vikings): In the past three weeks, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. And Ochocinco, who had four straight games with 2-6 fantasy points, bounced back last week against Cleveland with nine receptions for 137 yards and one touchdown.

Santonio Holmes, Steelers (vs Browns): Hines Ward's status for Thursday's game is "very questionable," according to coach Mike Tomlin. Assuming Ward doesn't play, Holmes will get more targets and he's been productive with Ward in the lineup. In the past five weeks, Holmes has had 6+ receptions and 74+ yards every week. Last week against Oakland, Holmes had his best game of the year (8-149-1).

The Weekly Blitz - Week 13

Every week, I pick three NFL games against the spread (ATS) and here are my week 13 picks:

Patriots -4.5 (over Dolphins): The Patriots are coming off a tough loss on a short week. And they are on the road against a division rival. The Saints held Tom Brady and the Patriots to no passing scores. But the Dolphins are coming off a disappointing loss as well against the Bills. Brady should bounce back against the league's 23rd-ranked pass defense. Meanwhile Laurence Maroney has scored a rushing TD (or two) in six consecutive games. The last time the Patriots lost two consecutive games was in November 2006.

Titans +6.5 (over Colts): I'm not necessarily calling for an outright upset here (although I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen). With the exception of a meaningless week 17 game last year, here are the point differentials in games Vince Young has started against the Colts: -1, +3, -2, +6. There's nothing wrong with winning close games, especially when you're 11-0, but the Colts have engineered come-from-behind victories in the fourth quarter in their past five games. With Chris Johnson running all over opponents (six straight games with 125+ yards), the Colts playing close games recently and the historical trend of close games in this series, give me the points.

Vikings -3.0 (over Cardinals): The Vikings are as complete as any team in football. With five weeks to go, they rank fifth in total offense and eighth in total defense. And despite all the will-he-or-won't-he-return drama, Brett Favre is a legitmate MVP contender. He's tied with Peyton Manning for second in TD passes (24) behind Drew Brees (27), but Favre has thrown only three interceptions. I expect Kurt Warner to return this week, but the Cardinals' pass offense is considerably less explosive with Matt Leinart under center.

Fantasy Football: Top 50 WRs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 wide receivers for week 13:

1. Randy Moss, Patriots (at Dolphins): In his first matchup against the Dolphins, who rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed (233 ypg), Moss had six receptions for 147 yards and one TD. On the season, Moss leads the NFL in receiving yards (992) and is only one behind the leaders in TD receptions (eight). After getting their ass whooped on prime-time TV, expect the Patriots, Tom Brady, Moss & Co. to come out swinging.

2. Andre Johnson, Texans (at Jaguars): Johnson is one of the league's most complete receivers and perhaps the most underrated. This week, Johnson gets a favorable matchup against the Jaguars, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to receivers this season. On the season, Johnson ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (945).

3. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals (vs Vikings): The Vikings have been without Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, for the past five games. On the season, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. My expectation is for QB Kurt Warner to return from his concussion as Fitzgerald had his worst game of the season with Matt Leinart as QB last week. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (nine) including four TDs in the last three games in which Warner has played.

4. Reggie Wayne, Colts (vs Titans): Wayne is second in receptions (79), second in receiving yards (987) and tied for first in touchdowns (nine) in the league. In addition to their improvements with Vince Young under center, the Titans have improved on the defensive side of the ball as they are healthier now. Only the Lions (27) have allowed more receiving touchdowns than the Titans (25) on the season. During their five-game winning streak, however, the Titans have allowed only the 18th-most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (at Cardinals): In three of his past six games, Rice has 136 receiving yards or more including a game with 201yards. With the exception of his game at Green Bay, Rice has had 89 yards or more in five of his past six. Favre and Rice have built chemistry quickly and they have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to receivers this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 40 RBs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 running backs for week 13:

1. Thomas Jones, Jets (at Bills): The first time that Jones faced the Bills this season, he rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and only the Raiders have allowed more rushing TDs than the Bills (16). Since the Jets want QB Mark Sanchez to air it out less and less (his attempts have gone from 35 to 30 to 21 to 17), Jones better bring his lunch-pail tonight.

2. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Colts): As well as Johnson has played in the past six weeks (125+ rushing yards every week), you can consider Johnson 1(a) -- not #2 -- in this week's rankings. During their five-game winning streak, Johnson has rushed for seven touchdowns. Although the Colts have a middle-of-the-pack run defense on the season, they've given up the 11th-most fantasy points to opposing RBs in the past three weeks.

3. DeAngelo Williams, Panthers (vs Buccaneers): DeAngelo has cooled off a bit with no touchdowns in the past three weeks and only one 100-yard game during that span. The first time that Williams faced the Buccaneers this season, he carried the ball 30 times for 152 yards and two scores. Expect more of the same against the league's third-worst rush defense.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (at Cardinals): The Cardinals were the league's top-ranked run defense earlier in the season, but they have dropped to 14th in the NFL against the run (108.6 ypg allowed). In four of the past five weeks, they have allowed an opposing running back to eclipse the century mark. Surprisingly, Peterson has only three 100-yard games on the season, but he is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (vs Texans): MJD has rushed for more rushing touchdowns (13) than any other running back. (Of course, none of those are as famous as the TD that he didn't score.) That said, Jones-Drew faces a Texans run defense that turned itself around after the first three weeks. In week 3, however, MJD rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Football: Top 25 QBs for Week 13

It's time to put up or shut up. If you haven't yet clinched a playoff berth in your fantasy league, it likely comes down to week 13 for you as most fantasy leagues start their playoffs in week 14.

And to paraphrase Bill Parcells, this is why you buy those cheat sheets, do those mock drafts, etc. -- to get into (and win in) the playoffs.

Here are my top 5 quarterbacks for week 13:

1. Peyton Manning, Colts (vs Titans): Manning is the only QB to average over 300 passing yards per game (310.5) and is second in passing touchdowns (24). While the Titans and their defense have been playing better lately, they have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns (25) this season.

2. Brett Favre, Vikings (at Cardinals): In his past four games, Favre has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, Arizona allows the fourth-most passing yards (258.3 ypg).

3. Drew Brees, Saints (at Redskins): Brees is coming off a five-TD performance against the Patriots in what was arguably the most important regular-season game in team history. Although this week's opponent (Washington) allows the fewest passing yards in the NFL (170.4 ypg), Brees and the Saints offense are firing on all cylinders right now.

4. Tom Brady, Patriots (at Dolphins): Brady failed to connect on a TD pass last week, but he had 332 passing yards against the Dolphins in their first match-up. With targets like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it's not likely that Brady goes TD-less in back-to-back games.

5. Philip Rivers, Chargers (at Chiefs): Rivers has posted three consecutive 100+ QB ratings and this week he faces the Browns, who have allowed the ninth-most passing yards (233.4 ypg) this season. In the past four games, Rivers has thrown eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Freeney out against Texans

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney won't play against the Houston Texans on Sunday, per Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star.

Freeney, who leads the Colts in sacks (9.5), hasn't practiced all week due to an abdominal injury.

The Texans have the league's third-ranked passing offense (295.8 yards per game) led by quarterback Matt Schaub.

With cornerback Kelvin Hayden still questionable, the Colts could again be without three quarters of their starting secondary. (Safety Bob Sanders and cornerback Marlin Jackson are on injured reserve and out for the season.)

In their first matchup, which the Colts won by three, Freeney had 1.5 sacks and Schaub passed for 311 yards.

Colts edge Pats in thriller

It's the easily the best modern-day rivalry in the NFL.

And tonight it didn't disappoint.

The Colts, who trailed by 17 points in the fourth quarter, scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to edge the Patriots 35-34 to remain unbeaten.

The Patriots and coach Bill Belichick set up the Colts in their final drive by going for it on fourth and two and coming up short on a pass to Kevin Faulk.

Had the Patriots held on to win, the Colts would have fallen to 8-1 with only a one-game lead over the Patriots, who would have held the tie-breaker, and the Bengals.

The Colts have now won 18 consecutive regular-season games -- nine wins to end 2008 and nine wins to begin 2009. They trail only the Patriots for the longest streak (21).

The Colts next four games are against Baltimore, Houston, Tennessee and Denver.

Fantasy Football: RB Duds for Week 9

With six teams on a bye in week 9, you won't have the services of Adrian Peterson (Minnesota), Steven Jackson (St. Louis) and Thomas Jones (NY Jets) for your fantasy team this week.

Here are some players who are scheduled to play that I think will under-perform relative to their fantasy rankings for week 9:

Matt Forte, Bears (consensus rank 14): Last year, Forte was one of the biggest surprises in fantasy football. This year, he's one of the biggest disappointments. Through seven games, he has 408 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He's had two good games: 121 yards and a score vs Detroit and 90 yards and two scores vs Cleveland. But anyone can run on Cleveland and Detroit, who have given up the third most and sixth most fantasy points to running backs, respectively. In fact, Forte followed up his first good performance (vs Detroit) with a 23-yard game (15 carries) against a Falcons run defense that currently ranks 23rd in the NFL. This week, Forte faces the team that had led the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed heading into last week. Although the Cardinals allowed the Panthers to run the ball against them last week, they still rank eighth in the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed (96.4 ypg). And if you're looking for Forte to compensate as a receiver, only the Buccaneers have allowed fewer receptions to RBs than the Cardinals have.

Joseph Addai, Colts (consensus rank 12): The positives for Addai? Two consecutive 20-carry games and he's scored five touchdowns in seven games. But Addai is averaging only 3.3 yards per carry on the season and he's never had more than 64 rushing yards in any game this season. Donald Brown, who was injured two weeks ago and didn't play last week, is questionable for Sunday's game and will be a game-time decision. If Brown returns, that will reduce several of Addai's carries. And in the past five weeks, the Texans have allowed the fewest fantasy points to running backs in the NFL.

Brian Westbrook, Eagles (consensus rank 13): Westbrook has been one of the best and most dangerous running backs in the NFL for several years. After sitting last week due to a concussion, Westbrook will be back in the starting lineup against the Cowboys. But let's take a look at Westbrook's numbers pre-concussion. He's averaging only 39.4 rushing yards per game (lowest since his rookie season) and 26 receiving yards per game (lowest since his second season). Westbrook has never received more than 13 carries in one game this season and there is only one game in which he has more than 20 receiving yards. While Westbrook has the potential to make a big play at any time, he's no longer a sure thing (when healthy) in fantasy football.

Colts' doctors working overtime

This hasn't been a good week on the medical front for the Indianapolis Colts.

The team has announced today that safety Bob Sanders will require season-ending surgery on a torn biceps. Last night, the team announced that cornerback Marlin Jackson will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.

In addition to losing half of their starting secondary for the remainder of the season, starting cornerback Kelvin Hayden will miss the next 3-4 weeks with a knee injury as well.

Earlier in the week, the Colts lost LB Tyjuan Hagler for the season with a biceps injury.

Aside from the losses on defense, receiver Anthony Gonzalez, who hasn't played since suffering a knee injury in week one, had arthroscopic surgery yesterday and will miss (at least) a few more weeks.

Even without Gonzalez, the Colts lead the NFL in passing offense (321.3 yards per game).

However, it will be much more challenging for the Colts on the defensive side of the ball over the next few weeks.

On the season, the Colts' pass defense ranks seventh in the NFL allowing 180.1 yards per game. They have allowed a league-low of three touchdown passes this year.

But they face the Houston Texans this week and New England Patriots next week.

Houston's Matt Schaub leads the NFL in passing yards (2,342) and is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (16). New England's Tom Brady ranks fifth in passing yards (2,032) and is tied for fourth in touchdowns (15).

Fantasy RB Studs - Week 7

Here are five running backs that I expect to have a big week:

DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, Panthers: Last week was like 2008 for this running back tandem. Each back had their breakout performance of the season and combined for 262 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 47 carries. What's different about this week? They face an even worse rushing defense. The Bills rank 32nd in the league against the run and have allowed four straight 100-yard rushers including 210 yards to Thomas Jones last week. No team allows more rushing yards per carry (5.3 yards) than the Bills. I expect to see a similar pass-to-run ratio as last week (17:48) with plenty of touches to go around for both to have a fantasy feast.

Marshawn Lynch, Bills: After missing the first three weeks due to a league-imposed suspension, Lynch could very well have his breakout performance of the season this week. Through three games, he's seen his number of carries increase from eight to 17 to 19. In each of the past two games, Lynch has been given four more carries per game than Fred Jackson. This week's opponent (Carolina) ranks 29th in the NFL against the run and is one of only two teams to give up 5+ yards per carry.

Ryan Grant, Packers: In the Packers' two blowout victories (vs St. Louis and Detroit), Grant received 26 and 24 carries, respectively. The Packers are favored by more than a touchdown over the Browns, who have the league's 30th-ranked run defense. Also, the only team to give up more rushing touchdowns than Cleveland (9) is Houston (10). Meanwhile, the Browns will be without D'Qwell Jackson, their leading tackler, for the remainder of the season.

Joseph Addai, Colts: Addai may not be racking up rushing yards, but he's racking up fantasy points. In fact, 36 running backs have more yards than Addai (210). But in the past two games alone, Addai has caught 17 passes for 103 yards. In five games this year, Addai has four touchdowns (three rushing and one receiving). This week, the Colts face the Rams, who have given up nine rushing touchdowns. The Rams rank 26th against the run and 27th against the pass.

309 more passing yards for Peyton

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has extended his streak of 300-yard passing games to five.

Manning faced the league's worst passing defense that was missing one of its best defenders -- Pro Bowl cornerback Cortland Finnegan.

In the process of passing for 309 yards, the Colts essentially eliminated the Titans from the playoffs tonight. No team has started the season 0-5, which is the Titans' record, and made the post-season.

The Colts have a bye week next week and then face the Rams in week 7. Arguably, the Rams are the league's worst team and have allowed 146 points, which is second-most in the NFL behind the Detroit Lions.

On the season, Manning has 1645 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions through five games.

Fourth 300-yard game to start season for Peyton

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has led the Colts to a perfect 4-0 start and they are one of two unbeaten teams in the AFC along with the Denver Broncos.

In those four games, Manning has thrown for 300+ yards every week. He's never eclipsed the 300-mark in four consecutive games -- until now.

During that span, Manning has thrown for a total of 1,336 yards and nine touchdowns including three today against the Seahawks. He now has 342 career touchdown passes, which ties Fran Tarkenton for third all-time.

"I have met Fran," Manning said, per Alex Marvez of Fox Sports. "He and my dad [Archie] are friends. He was a unique player. I also think he was the first sports hero to host Saturday Night Live, which gives him some cool points."

Next week, the Colts face the Titans, who were ranked fourth-to-last in passing defense (274.7 yards per game) heading into today's game against the Jaguars. David Garrard had 323 passing yards against the Titans today.

Will Peyton make it five straight 300-yard games?

Colts awaiting results of Freeney's MRI

The Colts are one of four AFC teams to start the season with a perfect 3-0 record despite battling several injuries so far this season.

In Sunday night's win over Arizona, the Colts were without four starters -- receiver Anthony Gonzalez, safety Bob Sanders, cornerback Kelvin Hayden and linebacker Gary Brackett. Now you can add All-Pro defensive end Dwight Freeney to the injured list.

Freeney, who left yesterday's game when he "felt something pop" in his quadricep, had an MRI today.

"The docs will report to us later this evening, so we'll know something then, but I don't think there will be anything definitive for quite a while," [Colts president Bill] Polian said (via the Associated Press) on his weekly radio show Monday night. "The positive side is that he basically said, 'I can walk, I can play.' The good news is I don't have any bad news."

While it appears likely that Freeney will miss Sunday's game against the Seahawks, it would be a devastating loss for the Colts' defense if Freeney misses an extended period of time.

Freeney, the Colts' first-round pick in 2002, has four sacks in three games this season.

Reggie Wayne to start 100th straight game tonight

Colts receiver Reggie Wayne will make his 100th consecutive start tonight when the Colts play the Cardinals.

"That's my job," Wayne said, per Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star. "That's what they pay me to do, be on the field and ready. I take pride in it. I think everybody in this locker room should take pride in playing the game, seeing how many they can play in a row."

Wayne's streak of 99 straight starts is 55 more than the next closest receiver -- Buffalo's Lee Evans.

"I ain't been 100 percent since my rookie year when I came in on (owner Jim) Irsay's helicopter," Wayne said. "If I can go, I go. There's been hundreds of times when I'm still hurting from the week before, but that's part of it.

"You've got to be able to push through those nicks and pains. I really want to be out there. That's the only way I can make things happen. I feel like if I'm out there, my team can trust in me."

Wayne, who was the Colts' first-round pick in 2001, is currently fifth in the league in receiving yards (199) and tied for ninth in receptions (13) through two games.

In our consensus/average fantasy rankings, Wayne is #2 in our top 50 wide receivers for week 3.

2009 AFC South Prediction

Before tomorrow night's season opener between the Steelers and Titans, we will project the final standings and team records for all eight divisions as well as our post-season picks. Let's continue with the AFC South.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Prediction: 10-6 (Colts Schedule | Colts Forum)

The Colts enter the post-Tony Dungy era with a six-season streak of 12+ wins. However, new coach Jim Caldwell has been Peyton Manning's quarterbacks coach under Dungy since 2002. The Colts also lost the team's all-time receiver Marvin Harrison, who was released after not agreeing to a restructured contract. But they drafted RB Donald Brown (first round) and WR Austin Collie (fourth round) in this year's draft. With durability concerns for Joseph Addai, the incumbent starter at RB, the addition of Brown will either keep Addai fresh by reducing his workload or provide the Colts with protection should he miss a lot of time. Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark form one of the league's top WR-WR-TE trios. Two big concerns for the upcoming season are the offensive line's ability to protect Manning and the health of safety Bob Sanders, who has played more than six games in only two of his five seasons. Sanders' status for week one is still unclear.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .512 winning percentage in 2008 (13th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Miami, at Arizona, at Tennessee, at Baltimore, vs Tennessee

5 Fantasy Running Backs to target in your draft

As you already know, fantasy football leagues are not necessarily won by the genius who decides to select Adrian Peterson with the number one pick. Whether you have the third pick, the eighth pick or the tenth pick, everyone is getting top talent in the first round.

And if we take a quick look back to 2008, players such as Matt Forte, Deangelo Williams and Chris Johnson were drafted in the 10th round or later yet they put up first-round numbers.

While that may be the extreme, the key to winning your league is selecting players who are good values in relation to where they are drafted and to do so consistently throughout your draft.

So, here are some running backs to target from round 3 through the later rounds:

Kevin Smith, Lions – Last year was the year of the rookie RB. Three of them rushed for 1,000+ yards. One of the guys who flew under the radar and just fell shy of 1,000 yards was Kevin Smith of Detroit.

While Smith has a case of JonKitna-itis, predicting a Detroit Lions’ playoff berth in ’09, he just needs to do what he has done since November last year.

When given the chance in the second half, Smith produced and produced big. He rushed for 671 yards in the final 8 games. That is a 1,342-yard pace in an offense that had Dan “Safety Dance” Orlovsky running it.

Only 4 RBs had more than 1,342 yards in 2008.

With MegaTron -- that’s Calvin Johnson for those of you not well-versed in freakishly, athletic receiver nicknames -- entering his third season, a quarterback who's last name doesn't rhyme with jerkoff-ski and the addition of Brandon Pettigrew, the most-talented and best-blocking TE in the draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith continued his second-half pace into 2009, in which case Smith becomes the bargain of the third round of your draft.

Ryan Grant, Packers – Although he wasn’t 100% to start the season and didn’t crack 20 carries in the first five weeks of the year, Ryan Grant was one of only five backs to carry the ball 300+ times in 2008.

Despite some labeling him a “bust,” Grant finished strong and still rushed for 1203 yards. All four of the times he eclipsed the century mark came in the final ten games of the season.

With Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver in the passing game, opposing defenses need to be honest when trying to stop Grant and the Packers running attack.

Provided Grant stays healthy for the entire season, he should top his 2008 production of 1200+ yards.

Ray Rice, Ravens – If you read my blog post in early June -- ‘Four (Ravens’) Breakout Players for 2009’ -- over at FootBaltimore.com, putting Ray Rice on this list doesn’t surprise you.

In 2009, I expect the Ravens’ ground game to be the same as -- but different than -- it was in 2008. So, what does that mean?

Last year, the Ravens led the NFL in rushing attempts at 37 per game. I don’t expect that to change much. What will be different in 2009 is how the carries are allocated. Rice, who has been running (no pun intended) with the first team, should receive the most carries this year. Le’Ron McClain, last year’s leader with 232 carries, has moved to FB full-time to take over for the departed Lorenzo Neal.

While Willis McGahee had a strong camp, Rice has added both muscle and confidence in the off-season. And Coach John Harbaugh has been singing his praises saying that he has no doubt that Rice can be an “every-down back.”

Donald Brown, Colts – Brown, who was the nation’s leading rusher in college football and joins one of the most prolific offenses in the league. Brown carried the rock 28 times per game on average at UConn and rushed for 200+ yards three times and 150+ yards eight times.

With Joseph Addai already in Indy, Brown will be part of a platoon to start the season.

Worst-case scenario, Brown should get 10-12 carries per game and finish with around 700-800 yards.

Best-case scenario, (except from Addai’s perspective), it’s déjà vu all over again for Addai leading to huge upside for Brown.

Cedric Benson, Bengals – While I wouldn’t go for a boat ride with Bengals running back Cedric Benson, I’d certainly draft him after 30 or so running backs are off the board, which is what his Yahoo! ADP and ESPN rank would project.

Benson (and the Bengals for that matter) finished 2008 strong despite being the 32nd-ranked offense in the league last year. In the final three weeks of the season, Benson showed why the Bears drafted him fourth overall in 2005.

In those three games (all wins), Benson carried the ball 84 times for 355 yards and caught 5 passes for 107 yards. With Carson Palmer healthy (arm/shoulder, at least), Chad Ochocinco refocused and top rookie Andre Smith re-joining the offensive line (after his broken foot heals), there is no reason to believe that the Bengals will finish ranked last in offense again this year. And Benson should only benefit from those healthier, refocused and new components to the offense.

Some other RBs I like late in the draft: Felix Jones (Cowboys), Ahmad Bradshaw (Giants) and James Davis (Browns).

Collie has inside track for third receiver spot

Indianapolis Colts rookie receiver Austin Collie, the team's fourth-round pick out of BYU, has impressed the coaches with his production and work ethic, according to Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star.

Wilson points out that Collie and Pierre Garcon were expected to compete to be the team's third receiver behind Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez. However, Garcon has had a couple of drops in the Colts' two pre-season games.

"He has certainly shown the ability to be a clutch player and catch the ball in tough situations, and can run with it after the catch," [Colts coach Jim] Caldwell said. "He also has a real fine understanding of where he's supposed to be, and I think that's the really important thing, particularly when you're working on your timing with the quarterback."

"He's got an attitude where he's like a gym rat," Caldwell said. "He's in early and stays late. He has a bit of a perfectionist attitude about all of his work and preparation."

Collie leads the Colts with six receptions through two pre-season games. Last year, Collie had 106 catches for 1,538 yards and 15 touchdowns at BYU.

Colts sign Donald Brown

NCAA FOOTBALL: JAN 03ÊInternational Bowl - Buffalo v UConn

The Indianapolis Colts have signed Donald Brown, their first-round pick out of UConn, to a five-year contract, per Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star.

Brown was the second running back drafted behind Knowshon Moreno of Denver and one of three running backs selected in the first round.

"With rookies particularly, it's never good to have them miss any time because it's all valuable,'' team president Bill Polian said. "We're happy we got it done. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. But the last couple of years we've been able to get it done and that's a positive.''

As a junior running back at UConn last season, Brown led the nation in rushing yards (2,083). In 13 games last year, he rushed for over 200 yards three times and over 150 yards eight times.

While Joseph Addai may be the starter in Indy, Addai has struggled to stay healthy. Last year, Addai only had one game in which he rushed at least 20 times. In 12 games, Addai carried the ball only 155 times and rushed for 544 yards.

In a platoon, Brown should get around ten carries per game and get in the ballpark of 700 rushing yards. However, if Addai can't stay healthy (again), Brown has huge upside in fantasy football leagues.

Four late-round impact rookies?

In his latest Sunday at the Post column for the National Football Post, Michael Lombardi noted four players who were drafted in the fourth round or later of this year's draft who might make immediate impacts for their teams.

The players are Oakland WR Louis Murphy (fourth round, 124th overall), Chicago CB D.J. Moore (fourth round, 119th overall), Indinapolis DT Terrance Taylor (fourth round, 136th overall) and Cincinnati P Kevin Huber (fifth round, 142nd overall).

Murphy expected to be drafted in the first or second round based on conversations with teams. Scout.com ranked him as the tenth best wide receiver, but he was the 18th WR selected in the draft.

Marvin Harrison wants to play in 2009

Free agent wide receiver Marvin Harrison doesn't intend to retire per Steve Wyche of NFL.com. However, sometimes it's not the player that makes that decision as Harrison is still a free agent.
“I played in 15 games last year and a playoff game, and I intend to play again this season,” [agent Tom] Condon said Harrison told him in a conversation Thursday afternoon.
Although Harrison played a full season last year, 2008 was his least productive season (60 receptions, 636 yards and five touchdowns) aside from his injury-shortened 2007 season. A knee injury limited Harrison to five games in 2007, however, Condon claims that the knee is not an issue.

Harrison ranks second all-time behind Jerry Rice in receptions (1102) and fourth all-time in receiving yards (14,580).

Although he was released because he wasn't willing to renegotiate the final year of his contract, I believe the best situation for Harrison would be to re-sign with the Colts.

Colts giving Ed Johnson "another opportunity"

The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed defensive tackle Ed Johnson, who was cut last September after being arrested for marijuana possession.
“We dismissed Ed last year because he knowingly violated a team rule in the area of personal conduct. ... Ed understands our team rules and our mandate that players represent themselves as professionals at all times. We feel the lessons Ed has learned will allow him to be what we demand from our players.”
Before Johnson was released, he started all 16 games in 2007. He had 41 tackles and one sack in 2007.

April 29, 2009

Colts re-sign Freddie Keiaho

Per Len Pasquerelli of the ESPN.com, the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed linebacker Freddie Keiaho. Although terms of the deal haven't been released, Keiaho's contract is believed to be a one-year deal.

Keiaho, who was drafted by the Colts in the third round in 2006, has started the past two seasons. He recorded over 100 tackles in both seasons.

The Colts plan to move Clint Session to weak-side linebacker, where Keiaho played. If Keiaho doesn't start, he will provide depth and flexibility.

April 25, 2009

And with the 27th-overall pick...

The Indianapolis Colts have selected Donald Brown, RB from Connecticut.

Brown led the NCAA in rushing in 2008 and he had a good combine workout (41.5" vertical jump).

Some players still on the board are USC's Rey Maualuga, Florida State's Everette Brown and Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells.

Buffalo is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

Colts rework Wayne's deal, sign Barnes

The Indianapolis Colts have freed up some cap space by restructuring the deal for wide receiver Reggie Wayne.

The Colts reduced the amount Wayne will count towards the cap from $7.44 million to $6.96 million by turning a portion of his base salary into a bonus that will be prorated over the final three years of his contract.

In addition to restructuring Wayne's contract, the Colts signed guard Brandon Barnes to a two-year contract.

The Colts are roughly $7 million under the salary cap.

April 21, 2009

Colts re-sign Matt Giordano

The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed safety Matt Giordano.

After being drafted in the fourth round in 2005, Giordano has spent the past four years in Indianapolis but he became an unrestricted free agent in the off-season.

Giordano had 23 tackles in 2008.

March 21, 2009

Colts sign Adam Seward

The Indianapolis Colts have signed linebacker Adam Seward to a one-year contract.
"Adam's looking forward to the opportunity,'' Mike Hoffman, his agent, said Friday evening. "He's a good match for the Colts.''
Seward, the Panthers' fifth-round pick in 2005, has appeared in 40 games in his four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He has a total of 44 tackles in his career.

February 26, 2009

Colts keep Jeff Saturday from becoming UFA

The Indianapolis Colts have signed center Jeff Saturday to a 3-year deal. The financial terms of the contract haven't yet been disclosed.

Saturday, who has played for the Colts for the past 9 seasons, has earned 3 trips to the Pro Bowl. During his tenure with the Colts, they have allowed a league low in sacks (178). They also tied a franchise record for fewest sacks allowed (14) last year.

When it seemed likely that Saturday wouldn't return to Indy, there was speculation that the Steelers were going to be the first team that Ralph Cindrich, Saturday's agent, would have called.
“He’s happy to play guard. He started in the league at guard. He told me, ‘I’ll play anywhere,’ “ Cindrich told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I talked to Jeff after the Super Bowl, and he said if you can get me there, that would be beautiful. This is a Rooney-type of guy if ever there was one.”
If the Colts weren't able to reach a deal with Saturday, he would have become an unrestricted free agent Friday at 12:01 a.m.

Colts agree to let Marvin Harrison go

Colts WR Marvin Harrison asked to be released. And the Colts have granted him his request.

The Colts offered Harrison, who had the largest salary-cap number for WRs, a reduced contract. But Harrison didn't accept it.
"Basically, we were not able to come to any kind of agreement, it was not contentious and the Colts have agreed to release him," [Harrison's agent Tom] Condon said.
If the Colts didn't release him, Harrison would have counted $13.4 million towards the cap. Without Harrison, he will count $7.4 million towards the cap (based on pro-rated bonuses that have already been paid).

Harrison ranks #2 on the all-time receptions list and #4 on the all-time receiving yards list. However, Harrison certainly won't earn the $9 million salary that he was due elsewhere considering his diminished production over the past couple of seasons.

Harrison not expected to accept pay cut

Indianapolis Colts WR Marvin Harrison, who is in the final year of his contract, is scheduled to count $13.4 million against the salary cap. No other WR has a higher cap number than Harrison.

Colts head coach Jim Caldwell and Colts President say that Harrison is still the same Marvin Harrison he's always been. However, Harrison has only 80 catches for 883 yards and 6 TDs in the past 2 seasons (20 games).
"I saw a guy who's as quick as he's been,'' Caldwell said. "(He's) still a guy with the outstanding hands that he's always shown, still with the same ability to create some space for himself and get open. What we did not see (was) any diminishing in terms of his skills and ability.''
The Colts are expected to offer Harrison new terms to his contract, but the reports are that Harrison is not likely to accept a reduction in pay.

If Harrison isn't willing to renegotiate a new deal, the Colts should cut him. But it's always a difficult situation when a team has to cut a player who has spent his entire career with one team and has had an all-time great career.

Harrison, who was the Colts first-round pick in 1996, is second all-time in receptions (1102) and fourth all-time in receiving yards (14,580).

February 22, 2009

Jeff Saturday will become a free agent

According to the Indianapolis Star, the Indianapolis Colts will allow center Jeff Saturday to enter free agency, which begins Friday.

Saturday has played for the Colts for the past 9 seasons and has earned 3 trips to Hawaii (Pro Bowl). In those 9 seasons, he has missed only 6 games due to injury including 4 this season.

Last season, the Colts tied a franchise low with 14 sacks allowed. Only the Broncos and Titans (12 allowed) and the Saints (13 allowed) fared better.

However, during the 9 years that Saturday has been in Indy, the Colts have allowed the league's fewest sacks (178) during that span.

Marvin Harrison done in Indy?

When Marvin Harrison retires, there is no doubt that he will be a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Per Adam Shefter of NFL Network, it's a "when" - not an "if" - the Indianapolis Colts are going to release the future Hall of Famer.

Harrison is due a $12 million salary, which is the highest of NFL wide receivers, in 2009. Against the cap, Harrison would count for $13.4 million.

When the Colts cut Harrison, he will count $6.4 million towards the cap as "dead money." But it would save the team $7 million.

The Colts signed CB Kelvin Hayden to a 5-year deal tonight and may assign the franchise tag to C Jeff Saturday. The deadline to franchise players is Thursday at 4 p.m.

Harrison has 1102 career receptions (trailing only Jerry Rice and 1 ahead of Cris Carter) and 14580 career receiving yards (4th all-time behind Rice, Isaac Bruce and Tim Brown). He also has 128 receiving TDs, which ranks 9th all-time.

Colts sign CB Hayden to 5-year deal

The Indianapolis Colts, who were prepared to franchise CB Kelvin Hayden if necessary, have agreed to a 5-year contract worth $43 million with Hayden. The deal includes $22 million in guaranteed money.
"Needless to say, Kelvin is very happy,'' Fletcher Smith, Hayden's agent, said Wednesday night. "The (contract) just made a lot of sense for us.''
Hayden has had 3 interceptions in each of the past 2 seasons and has started 26 games during that span.

Hayden counts $6-$7 million towards the cap in 2009.

Prosecutor does know who Darrell Reid is

Sunday night, Indianapolis Colts DT Darrell Reid was arrested for disorderly conduct and trespassing in the parking lot of an Indianapolis club. Reid resisted requests to leave by using the "do-you-know-who-I-am?" card.

The Marion County prosecutor's office has decided to not press charges against Reid.
"We asked police to do more research," [spokesman Mario Massillamany] said, "and we determined that the location of the incident was on public property, not private."
I guess the prosecutor does know who Darrell Reid is even if security doesn't.

February 08, 2009

Colts DT Darrell Reid: "Do you know who I am?"

After refusing to leave the parking lot at Oxygen Lounge in Indianapolis, Colts DT Darrell Reid was arrested for disorderly conduct and trespassing.

This is his second arrest in 11 months as he was arrested for marijuana possession charges in NJ last March.

Reid tried to pull the "do-you-know-who-I-am?" card when security, who was an off-duty officer, asked Reid to leave the parking lot because the club was full to capacity.
"I don't have to because I am a football player with the Indianapolis Colts."

The officer responded: "I don't care who you are. I am a police officer."
Reid had 30 tackles and 2 sacks in 2008.

Colts hire Larry Coyer as defensive coordinator

The Indianapolis Colts have hired Larry Coyer as defensive coordinator to replace Ron Meeks, who was forced out and is now the defensive coordinator in Carolina.
"Larry's a real good fundamental football coach," said Dennis Green, who coached with Coyer at the University of Iowa during the 1970s... "He's tough, hard-nosed but really understanding dealing with the players, and he has a good feel for what a player can and can't do."
Coyer, who has been an assistant with the Bucs the past 2 years, was defensive coordinator in Denver from 2003-2006.

With the exception of free agent Kelvin Hayden, 10 of 11 defensive starters will return in 2009.

Colts Ron Meeks "resigns"

So much for continuity.

Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks "resigned" yesterday after speculation Monday that he was going to be fired by new head coach Jim Caldwell.

According to PFT, Polian had to talk Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore out of retiring, but special teams coach Russ Pernell was fired by Caldwell last week.

There is no word whether the Colts will utilize a different defensive scheme, but their current roster is configured with guys (smaller and faster) that are suited for the "Tampa 2."

In 2008, the Colts ranked 7th in defensive scoring (18.6 ppg), 11th in defensive yards allowed (310.9 ypg), but ranked 24th in the league against the run (122.9 ypg).

Jim Caldwell shows off sense of humor

Whether it's "Playoffs?...Don't talk about playoffs...," "the Bears are who we thought they were..." or "you play to...win...the...game...", you know them.

I don't need to tell you that it was Jim Mora, Dennis Green and Herm Edwards, respectively, for you to know who said them.

In his first press conference, Caldwell displayed his sense of humor. He said to the media that "his goal" was to "make certain that my first press conference isn't immortalized as one of those beer commercials."

Tony Dungy retires

Today Tony Dungy announced he will step down as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Dungy has coached for 28 years including 13 seasons as head coach (7 with Colts, 6 with Bucs).

Dungy has mentioned that his priorities were his faith, his family and then football. Now he will have the opportunity to spend more time with his family and be more involved with the community.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a losing season in each of the 13 seasons (1983-1995) before Tony Dungy was hired as coach. In Dungy's 13-year head coaching career, his only losing season as a head coach was his first season (6-10 in 1996 with Tampa).

Dungy-coached teams have earned playoff berths in 10 straight seasons, which is an NFL record since 1970 (AFL/NFL merger). He also has won 12+ wins in each of the past 6 seasons, another NFL record.

With a career record of 139-69 (.668), Dungy ranks 7th all-time in winning percentage. Dungy retires as the all-time winningest coach in Colts history.
"We just felt this was the right time," Dungy said. "Don't shed any tears for me. I got to live a dream most people don't get to live."
Dungy, who was fired from the Bucs for his perceived inability to win the big game, is the only black head coach to win a Super Bowl. (See list of all Super Bowl winners.)

Colts QB Coach Jim Caldwell will succeed Dungy as head coach.
"He is ready, he's more than ready," Dungy said. "He's going to do a great job."
Dungy has a history of leaving franchises better off than when he arrived. That will be a tough feat for Caldwell to accomplish.

No criminal charges against Marvin Harrison (for now)

For now, there won't be any criminal charges against Marvin Harrison from the shooting that took place in Philadelphia on April 29th. Harrison's gun, however, has been confirmed as the gun used in the shooting.
“We have nine or so versions of what happened. … Obviously, we haven’t heard the truth. We’ve heard pieces of the truth,” District Attorney Lynne Abraham said at a news conference.
The AG has said that criminal charges could be brought against Harrison depending on what happens in the civil case.

Dwight Dixon, the shooting victim, is suing Harrison saying Harrison “intentionally and outrageously shot” him and that he has “serious and permanent injuries." Dixon is seeking more than $50,000 in both compensatory damages and punitive damages.

Marvin Harrison is 4th all-time in receiving yards (14,580) and 2nd among active players. Isaac Bruce is 2nd on the list at 14,944 yards. This season Harrison had 60 receptions for 636 yards and 5 TDs.

Bolts beat Colts in OT

Despite having a detached tendon, LaDainian Tomlinson started last night against the Colts. He carried the ball 5 times for 25 yards and a score, but came out in the second quarter for good.
"From the first run, it was evident that I just didn't have the burst," said Tomlinson... "I couldn't put my foot on the ground and get through the hole the way I wanted to. I went as long as I could. After the TD run, it was at the point where I felt like I was making it worse."
Darren Sproles may be small in stature (5'6", 181 lbs), but he came up big last night. Sproles finished with 328 all-purpose yards: 105 rushing, 45 receiving and 178 on returns. That is the third-highest total ever in a playoff game.

The Chargers will play in Tennessee if the Dolphins beat the Ravens or play in Pittsburgh if the Ravens win.

Tony Dungy's annual ritual coming soon

Every year, Indianapolis Colts' head coach Tony Dungy weighs the pro's/con's of returning to the NFL to coach another season. It's something Dungy has done for the past several years and it first became public during the 2006 post-season run to the Super Bowl.

The Colts enter the playoffs as a wildcard and with the longest winning streak in the NFL (9 games). Once the season ends, Dungy will deliberate about whether he will return or not for the 2009 season.

When Peyton Manning won the league's MVP award, he called this season his "most rewarding" and said that he thought many players and coaches shared his view. Here's Dungy's view:
"I've really enjoyed the season," said Dungy, who acknowledged having three-time league MVP Peyton Manning at quarterback and a team with 12-win talent makes leaving difficult. "It was really a unique challenge to be 3-4 and then see our team really come together the way that it has to make the playoffs.''
The Indianapolis Colts have won 12+ games in 6 straight seasons.

Owner Jim Isray and the Colts certainly want Dungy to keep coaching. But they have Dungy's successor in house (QB Coach Jim Caldwell) so the Colts wouldn't be scrambling to find a replacement if Dungy were to leave.

If Dungy stops coaching, it will be the NFL's loss and the community's gain as Dungy will devote more time to charitable endeavors.

Peyton Manning wins MVP award

Peyton Manning is now a 3-time NFL MVP. He was named league MVP today and joins Brett Favre as the only 3-time MVP. Manning was co-MVP with Steve McNair in 2003 and MVP in 2004.

After the Colts started 3-4, Manning played his best football during their 9-game winning streak throwing 17 TDs and only 3 INTs during that span.

Considering the obstacles and challenges the Colts have had to overcome, Manning says that he feels this is more of a "team award" and that this season has been the "most rewarding."
"It's been the most rewarding regular season that I've been a part of in my 11 years, and I have to believe a lot of the other players and even coaches might feel the same way."
Manning received 32 votes. Chad Pennington, who was named Comeback Player of the Year, and Michael Turner both finished second with 4 votes each.

The others receiving votes were James Harrison (3), Adrian Peterson (3), Phillip Rivers (2), Chris Johnson (1) and Kurt Warner (1).

I'm surprised that DeAngelo Williams didn't receive any votes. Williams finished 3rd in rushing yards (1515) and 1st in rushing TDs (18) for a team with a first-round bye. And in the final 9 games of the season, Williams rushed for 1101 yards and 16 TDs. In that span, he had 6.5 yards/carry and averaged 122.3 ypg. He went over the 100-yard mark in 7 of his final 9 games.

Playoff seeds - matchups

255 NFL regular-season games have been played. 1 to go. And that game between the Hatfields and McCoys will determine the AFC West champion. In essence, it's a play-in or playoff game.

AFC Match-ups (Seed):

First-round byes: Tennessee Titans (1) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2)

(6) Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins (3)
(5) Indianapolis Colts at winner of San Diego Chargers/Denver Broncos (4)

NFC Match-ups (Seed):

First-round byes: New York Giants (1) and Carolina Panthers (2)

(6) Philadelphia Eagles at Minnesota Vikings (3)
(5) Atlanta Falcons at Arizona Cardinals (4)

Peyton Manning - 9th 4000-yard passing season

Peyton Manning broke a record. His own record. Manning has now thrown for 4,000+ yards for the 9th time in his career. Dan Marino is 2nd on the list with 6.

Dan Marino, however, is 1st on the list of 5,000-yard seasons with 1. And is the only one on that list (at least, for now). Drew Brees entered today's game against the Panthers needing just 317 passing yards to become the 2nd player to throw for 5,000 yards in a season. He needs 401 yards to tie Dan Marino's single-season passing mark.

Peyton Manning has been replaced by Jim Sorgi in today's game against the Titans and won't play again until next week at either San Deigo or Denver. But in today's game he was 7-7 for 95 yards and 1 TD.

Since the November 2nd game against the Patriots, Manning has completed 72% of his passes for 2248 yards. He has thrown 17 TDs to only 3 INTs in November and December as well. Will he win his 3rd MVP?

Week 17 playoff scenarios

I can't recall an NFL season in recent memory with so many important matchups to decide entry into the post-season party like we have had last week and this week. Then again, I can't remember what I did 2 hours ago.

In any event, let's take a look at the current playoff picture. For simplicity sake, we ignore the possibility of a second tie this season.

Teams fall into 4 categories - playoff bound/seed locked, playoff bound/seed TBD, on playoff bubble and eliminated.

AFC Teams:

Playoff bound/seed locked:
Tennessee Titans (1), Pittsburgh Steelers (2), Indianapolis Colts (5)

Playoff bound/seed TBD:
none

On playoff bubble:
Miami Dolphins: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Jets. A Dolphins' loss eliminates them from the playoffs.

New England Patriots: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Bills and Jets win over Dolphins. Bill Belichick stopped short of saying he'd root for the Jets, but that's what he will be doing. If the Dolphins and Pats win, the Pats will get the 6 seed with a Ravens' loss.

New York Jets: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Dolphins and Pats' loss to Buffalo. Loss to Dolphins eliminates Jets' hopes. If the Jets and Pats win, the Jets will get the 6 seed if the Ravens lose.

Baltimore Ravens: Clinch 6 seed with a win over Jaguars or a Patriots loss to Buffalo and a Jets loss to Dolphins.

Denver Broncos: Win AFC West and clinch 4 seed with win over Chargers. Loss eliminates Broncos.

San Diego Chargers: same as Denver Broncos.

Eliminated:
Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders

AFC Playoff Picture

With 2 weeks to go, the AFC and NFC playoff races are interesting. We will take a team-by-team look at both conferences starting with the AFC. Here are current playoff seedings:
1. Tennessee Titans (12-2)
2. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3)
3. New York Jets (9-5)
4. Denver Broncos (8-6)
5. Indianapolis Colts (10-4)
6. Baltimore Ravens (9-5)
AFC East:

New York Jets (9-5): The Jets win the division if they win out (at Seattle and vs Miami). Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

Miami Dolphins (9-5): The Dolphins win the division if they win out (at Kansas City and at NY Jets). Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

New England Patriots (9-5): The Patriots win the division if they win out (vs Arizona and at Buffalo) and the Dolphins and Jets both lose at least 1 game. Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

Buffalo Bills (6-8): Eliminated.

A look at the AFC playoff picture

With a month remaining on the NFL schedule, it's do-or-die time for several AFC teams. For others, this month will be an opportunity to jockey for playoff positioning.

Here are the current AFC standings:
1. Tennessee Titans (11-1)
2. Pittsbugh Steelers (9-3)
3. New York Jets (8-4)
4. Denver Broncos (7-5)
5. Indianapolis Colts (8-4)
6. Baltimore Ravens (8-4)
Let's take a look at every AFC team by division. Team records are in parenthesis.

AFC East:

New York Jets (8-4): The Jets would have the 3 seed if the season ended today, but play in the tightest division and just lost to the team that would be the 4 seed. The Jets have an easy (relative to Steelers, Dolphins and Pats) remaining schedule with road games in San Francisco and Seattle and home games against Buffalo and Miami.

New England Patriots (7-5): The Patriots have suffered season-ending injuries to Adalius Thomas, Rodney Harrison, Laurence Maroney and, of course, Tom Brady. Matt Cassel has filled in admirably and has essentially written himself a huge lottery ticket as he enters free agency in the off-season. The Pats play 3 of their remaining 4 on the road. If they make the playoffs, it's most likely as the #6 seed.

Miami Dolphins (7-5): The 'Fins trail the Colts and Ravens by 1 game and are tied with the Patriots in the playoff race. What a turnaround for a team that finished 1-15, has a first-year coach (Tony Sparano) and lost their best player (Jason Taylor). Like the Pats, they finish up with 3 of 4 road games.

Buffalo Bills (6-6): Despite their strong 5-1 start, the Bills will need a miracle to make Donte Whitner's playoff guarantee come true. However, history hasn't been kind to this franchise when it comes to miracles.

Colts' Bob Sanders to miss Browns game

Colts Safety Bob Sanders will not play in the Cleveland Browns game. This will be the third game in a row Sanders will have missed. It will also be the 8th game of the season that Sanders will have missed.

Sanders is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. However, he has had trouble staying healthy. In his 5 NFL seasons, he has played more than 6 games only twice.

The Colts are 3-1 in games Sanders has played and 4-3 in games he has missed this season.

Bob Sanders out for Chargers game

Colts safety Bob Sanders, reigning Defensive Player of the Year, will miss his 2nd game in a row and his 7th game on the season.

The Colts are on a 3-game winning streak and enter tonight's game against the Chargers with a 6-4 record.

Last week, without Sanders in the lineup, the Texans ran for 177 yards and Steve Slaton had 156 yards on 11 carries.

Ben Roethlisberger's status unknown for Sunday?

As Ben Roethlisberger's replacement last night, Byron Leftwich filled in admirably. Leftwich completed 7/10 for 129 yards and threw a TD and no INTs.
"He made a lot of friends in there," coach Mike Tomlin said.

"He's an experienced player. He's not new to this," running back Willie Parker said. "Nobody was surprised by how well he came out and played. Ben went down and Byron seamlessly came in and did what he had to do."
Roethlisberger had an MRI on his reinjured shoulder today, but his status is still unknown for Sunday's game vs the Colts.

On the season, Roethlisberger has a 79.6 QB Rating and has thrown 10 TDs to 8 INTs.

Colts lose Marlon Jackson for season

Just when things were looking up (at least on the injury front) for the Colts, they lose a key player for the rest of the season.

Marlon Jackson tore his ACL and meniscus cartilage yesterday in practice.
"He did significant damage to the knee, and I'm not exactly sure, but it's probably going to involve some surgery," Dungy said before practice. "I think he might get a second opinion, but right now, he's probably going to be out for a while."

"We obviously feel bad for Marlin, but we have to continue on," Dungy said. "We'll know in a few days exactly what's going on and what's going to be required. For right now, we know he's going to be out for a while and more than likely will go on injured reserve."
The Colts re-signed Keiwan Ratliff, who has played four games this year and has 4 tackles on the season.

Colassal Collapse in Houston

Hurricane Ike delayed the Houston Texans' home opener by nearly a month. At today's game, I saw a fan with a sign that read "Hurricane Ike can take our roof. But it can't take our Texans soul."

With 5 minutes to go, the Texans had a 27-10 lead. Although Peyton Manning and the Colts then scored a TD to cut the lead to 27-17, the game seemed over when the Colts did not recover an attempt at an onside kick. In fact, no team has ever come from behind in the final 5 minutes while trailing by 17 points.

Then Sage Rosenfels attempted his Superman impersonation and tried to leap a tall building defensive players by a single bound.
“We were just trying to run the ball,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “We had a nice boot there. We told him (Rosenfels) if he didn’t have anything, just run it and we’ll punt it. They’ll be out of timeouts, and we’ll make them work. He made a great effort [read: he really screwed it up], but the ball came out.”

“I’m in shock,” middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans said. “I still can’t believe what happened. It’s unbelievable.”
In the greater scheme of things, the people of Houston had the opportunity to forget about the destruction of a hurricane. And be entertained tortured by a game that people will talk about for years to come.

Bob Sanders out up to 6 weeks?

The Indianapolis Colts suffered a huge blow losing reigning Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders for 4-6 weeks. Interestingly enough, he has struggled to stay healthy in even-numbered years in the past. He played 6 games in 2004, his rookie season, and 4 games in 2006.
"I feel like I'm prepared," [Sanders' replacement Melvin] Bullitt said. "It's always hard to replace a player like Bob, who was the defensive player of the year and, in my opinion, is the best safety in the league."
In the Colts Super Bowl winning season, Sanders played only 4 regular season games. The Colts finished 32nd in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game. In fact, they allowed more rushing ypg (173.0) than they allowed passing ypg (159.3).

Then, Sanders returned for the post-season and the Colts' run defense improved dramatically:
vs KC: 17 attempts for 44 yards
vs BAL: 20 attempts for 83 yards
vs NE: 24 attempts for 93 yards
vs CHI: 19 attempts for 111 yards
If you're a glass half-full kind-of person, you can take solace in the fact that Sanders will be back in 4-6 weeks. Consisdering the Patriots lost Tom Brady and the Chargers lost Shawne Merriman for the season, I still view the Colts as the team to beat in the AFC. However, they haven't looked like that so far. Their offense should look better with Jeff Saturday.

If Sanders misses 6 weeks, he would miss the following games:
vs Jacksonville
bye
at Houston
vs Baltimore
at Green Bay
at Tennessee
If he misses exactly 4 weeks, he will return in time for the Green Bay and Tennessee games, which will be big games for the Colts. If he misses extended time, however, the Colts schedule continues with 3 difficult games in 4 weeks:
vs New England
at Pittsburgh
vs Houston
at San Diego
The Colts have battled many injuries in the off-season, pre-season and early in the regular season. But this is the Colts' biggest loss.

AFC South Preview

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Prediction: 12-4 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: The Colts have had to deal (are dealing) with injuries to several key players: Peyton Manning, Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney, Jeff Saturday, etc. Peyton Manning is like a coach on the field and helps orchestrate perhaps the greatest offense of this decade. The Greatest Show on Turf was better at its peak, but their success hasn't lasted as long. But the most important player on this team is Bob Sanders. The under-sized, playmaking safety is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and without a healthy Sanders, I would expect the Jags to pass the Colts. If it weren't for the difference Sanders made to this defense after returning in 2006, Peyton and the Colts would have never won the Super Bowl that year.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Colts have the longest current streak of 10-win seasons in the NFL at 6 years.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 152-104 (.594)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (8): vs Jacksonville, at Green Bay, at Tennessee, vs New England, at Pittsburgh, at San Diego, at Jacksonville, vs Tennessee

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 38 wins (12.7 per season)

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Prediction: 11-5 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: As good as the Jaguars have been recently, they unfortunately play in arguably the toughest division in football. Every year, I think this could be the year that the Jags overtake the perennial AFC South winner Indianapolis Colts. The Jaguars play a smash-mouth style of football and can grind it out with the best of them. They may not be exciting unless, of course, you find winning football games exciting. My biggest concern for the Jaguars are the issues they have had off the field from Fred Taylor getting arrested in Miami and Matt Jones getting arrested for cocaine possession amongst many other issues. Some have referred to the Jags as the "Bengals of the South" because of the number of arrests they have had over the past couple of years. My other big concern is the production out of their wideouts. Reggie Williams and Jerry Porter have been hurt while Troy Williamson still couldn't catch a cold. Matt Jones, their best WR in the pre-season, faces an October court date. The Jags are a 1a to the Colts, but I think it's going to be more of the same for the Jags and a wildcard berth.

Interesting Stat/Fact: Of the Top 10 teams in victories over the last 3 years, the Jaguars are the only team to not win their division at least once in the past 3 years.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 143-113 (.559)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): at Tennessee, at Indianapolis, vs Pittsburgh, vs Tennessee, vs Green Bay, vs Indianapolis

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 31 wins (10.3 per season)

TENNESSEE TITANS
Prediction: 9-7 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: The Colts have the current Defensive Player of the Year (Bob Sanders). However, the Titans may have the league's defensive MVP, if such an award existed. Whether or not Albert Haynesworth is the best defensive player in the league is questionable, but I believe he's the most valuable to his team. And if you think the Jaguars are boring, you're not going to find the Titans much more exciting. Vince Young can make plays with his legs and rookie RB Chris Johnson is electric, but the Titans will win games by winning it in the trenches. I think this is a make-or-break season for Young, who threw nearly twice as many INTs than TDs in his sophomore season. Young will need to protect the ball better if the Titans are going to make it back to the post-season with their style of football. There's a saying about that the 3 most important things in business are "location, location, location." That applies to football too. The Titans are disadavantaged by playing in the same division as the Colts and the Jags (2 of the NFL's top 5 teams in my opinion). The Titans have a shot at the 6th wildcard spot, but I think they lose out on the tie-breaker.

Interesting Stat/Fact: In 2007, 5 of the 6 AFC playoff teams scored 100+ points more than their opponents. The Titans scored 4 more (301 PF, 297 PA). Very efficient.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 139-117 (.543)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): vs Jacksonville, vs Indianapolis, vs Green Bay, at Jacksvonille, vs Pittsburgh, at Indianapolis

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 22 wins (7.3 per season)

HOUSTON TEXANS
Prediction: 7-9 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: The Houston Texans drafted Mario Williams with the 1st overall pick in 2006. Everyone scoffed. How could you not take the electric Reggie Bush or Houston-native Vince Young? After 2 seasons, the Texans are the ones who are laughing last. Plus they hit the jackpot with their 2nd round pick that year, DeMeco Ryans, who won Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Texans had their first non-losing season last year and are heading in the right direction. However, they're in the AFC South (see Tennessee Titans). If Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson stay healthy, the passing game will be solid (see stat about Andre Johnson below). Their front seven on defense is solid, but the question marks for the Texans are will they be able run the ball consistently and how will their secondary play. The Texans are still at least a year away, but they are building their team around a solid core of young talent.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Texans were 6-3 last year in the 9 games Andre Johnson played. They were 2-5 in games he did not.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 140-116 (.547)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (8): at Pittsburgh, at Tennessee, at Jacksonville, vs Indianapolis, at Indianapolis, vs Jacksonville, at Green Bay, vs Tennessee

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 16 (5.3 per season)
