Dolphins have first shot at Dansby

Free-agent linebacker Karlos Dansby is set to meet with the Miami Dolphins today. However, if the Dolphins can't sign Dansby, the Cardinals will still be in the mix, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com.

After being franchised by the Cardinals for two consecutive seasons, Dansby is the top free-agent linebacker available this off-season and isn't limiting the teams he's willing to visit.

If the Dolphins don't sign Dansby, there is a good chance that they will use their first-round pick (12th overall) on an inside linebacker, which could limit their ability to upgrade at other key positions of need (outside linebacker, nose tackle and wide receiver), per ThePhinsider.com.

One of the teams that appeared set to bid on the free-agent linebacker was the New York Giants, who had released Antonio Pierce. However, they are unlikely to enter the bidding due to the amount of money Dansby is seeking and likely to get.

In six career NFL seasons (all in Arizona), Dansby has 559 tackles, 25.5 sacks and ten interceptions.

Mike Nolan to interview for Dolphins job

The Denver Broncos will have a new defensive coordinator in 2010 as will the Miami Dolphins, who fired Paul Pasqualoni last week.

"I can't say anything other than [coach] Josh [McDaniels] and I mutually agreed to part ways," [Mike] Nolan said, per Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

Meanwhile ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted, "Broncos already are discussing former Patriots DC Dean Pees, who worked with Denver head coach Josh McDaniels in New England."

Pees was defensive coordinator in New England from 2006 to 2009.

According to Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald, Nolan is expected to interview with the Dolphins by no later than Wednesday.

The Broncos finished seventh in total defense (315 yards allowed per game).

But the Broncos allowed a stingy 11 points per game in their first six games while allowing a generous 25.8 points per game in their final ten contests.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 17

In picking NFL games against the spread (ATS), 2009 wasn't quite the year that 2008 was for me. After going 31-18-2 ATS in 2008, I'm only two games above .500 this year.

The challenge of picking winners in week 17 is determining the motivation and intention of the teams. That said, all of my picks involve teams that will follow the Herm Edwards rule, i.e., "you play to win the game" as opposed to trying to keep their players healthy heading into the post-season.

Here are my week 17 picks:

Ravens -10.5 (over Raiders): The Ravens face a must-win situation against the Raiders, who are still the league's most dysfunctional franchise despite some impressive wins this year (Steelers, Bengals, Eagles, etc.). With a renewed focus on the ground (109 rushes to 81 passes in the past three weeks), Ray Rice and the Ravens should be able to exploit the Raiders rush defense that has allowed the most rushing touchdowns in the NFL. The Ravens have beat bad teams handily this year and week 17 won't be any different as I predicted a 31-10 victory at FootBaltimore.com.

Vikings -7.5 (over Giants): The Giants will be without Brandon Jacobs, who's had a disappointing year. And Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News says of Ahmad Bradshaw, "I don’t expect him to play, but if he does I think you can expect just a few carries for him..." Meanwhile, the Vikings, who have lost three of their past four games, need to win to clinch a first-round bye and to establish some momentum heading into the playoffs, which should not be discounted.

Steelers -3 (over Dolphins): The Steelers have won two close games against good teams and are possibly building some momentum heading into a playoff run. While they need some help to make the playoffs, they need to take care of business first by beating the Dolphins in a 1 p.m. matchup. Hines Ward says he will play and Santonio Holmes is on an eight-game streak of 74+ receiving yards. With an inexperienced Dolphins secondary, the Steelers should be able to air it out. In addition, Ricky Williams is questionable with a shoulder injury.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 16

Every week, I make three picks against the spread (ATS) for that week's NFL games. Here are my three guaranteed (well, unless they lose) winners for week 16:

Texans +1.5 (over Dolphins): Good luck Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. They will need all the luck they can get in trying to stop Andre Johnson, who is averaging 194.5 yards per game over the past two weeks. Both teams are 7-7 and need to win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Texans strengths match up well with Miami. When the Dolphins have the ball, they will look to feature Ricky Williams. But the Texans have a solid run defense, which could force the 'Fins to pass the ball more than they would otherwise like.

Packers -14 (over Seahawks): This game is a match made in blowout heaven. On one hand, Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 293.5 yards per game and nine touchdowns in his past four games. On the other hand, the Seahawks have allowed the fourth-most passing yards per game (249.4) in the NFL. Moreover, the Packers have blown out many of their inferior opponents whereas the Seahawks have been beaten badly by the teams that should beat them. After last week's heart-breaking loss to Pittsburgh, look for the Packers to take out their revenge on their next opponent. Sorry Seattle.

Vikings -7 (over Bears): While a first-round bye for the Vikings seemed like a lock three weeks ago, they have lost two of their past three games and now only lead the Eagles, who host the Broncos this week, by one game for the #2 seed. The Bears have played better at home (4-3) than on the road (1-6) mainly because QB Jay Cutler has been horrible on the road. But the first time these two teams played, the Vikings pummeled the Bears by 26 points. Matt Forte will struggle to run the ball (what else is new?) and the Vikings will pressure Jay Cutler into costly mistakes (again, what else is new?).

The Weekly Blitz - Week 13

Every week, I pick three NFL games against the spread (ATS) and here are my week 13 picks:

Patriots -4.5 (over Dolphins): The Patriots are coming off a tough loss on a short week. And they are on the road against a division rival. The Saints held Tom Brady and the Patriots to no passing scores. But the Dolphins are coming off a disappointing loss as well against the Bills. Brady should bounce back against the league's 23rd-ranked pass defense. Meanwhile Laurence Maroney has scored a rushing TD (or two) in six consecutive games. The last time the Patriots lost two consecutive games was in November 2006.

Titans +6.5 (over Colts): I'm not necessarily calling for an outright upset here (although I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen). With the exception of a meaningless week 17 game last year, here are the point differentials in games Vince Young has started against the Colts: -1, +3, -2, +6. There's nothing wrong with winning close games, especially when you're 11-0, but the Colts have engineered come-from-behind victories in the fourth quarter in their past five games. With Chris Johnson running all over opponents (six straight games with 125+ yards), the Colts playing close games recently and the historical trend of close games in this series, give me the points.

Vikings -3.0 (over Cardinals): The Vikings are as complete as any team in football. With five weeks to go, they rank fifth in total offense and eighth in total defense. And despite all the will-he-or-won't-he-return drama, Brett Favre is a legitmate MVP contender. He's tied with Peyton Manning for second in TD passes (24) behind Drew Brees (27), but Favre has thrown only three interceptions. I expect Kurt Warner to return this week, but the Cardinals' pass offense is considerably less explosive with Matt Leinart under center.

Fantasy Football: Top 50 WRs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 wide receivers for week 13:

1. Randy Moss, Patriots (at Dolphins): In his first matchup against the Dolphins, who rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed (233 ypg), Moss had six receptions for 147 yards and one TD. On the season, Moss leads the NFL in receiving yards (992) and is only one behind the leaders in TD receptions (eight). After getting their ass whooped on prime-time TV, expect the Patriots, Tom Brady, Moss & Co. to come out swinging.

2. Andre Johnson, Texans (at Jaguars): Johnson is one of the league's most complete receivers and perhaps the most underrated. This week, Johnson gets a favorable matchup against the Jaguars, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to receivers this season. On the season, Johnson ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (945).

3. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals (vs Vikings): The Vikings have been without Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, for the past five games. On the season, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. My expectation is for QB Kurt Warner to return from his concussion as Fitzgerald had his worst game of the season with Matt Leinart as QB last week. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (nine) including four TDs in the last three games in which Warner has played.

4. Reggie Wayne, Colts (vs Titans): Wayne is second in receptions (79), second in receiving yards (987) and tied for first in touchdowns (nine) in the league. In addition to their improvements with Vince Young under center, the Titans have improved on the defensive side of the ball as they are healthier now. Only the Lions (27) have allowed more receiving touchdowns than the Titans (25) on the season. During their five-game winning streak, however, the Titans have allowed only the 18th-most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (at Cardinals): In three of his past six games, Rice has 136 receiving yards or more including a game with 201yards. With the exception of his game at Green Bay, Rice has had 89 yards or more in five of his past six. Favre and Rice have built chemistry quickly and they have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to receivers this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 40 RBs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 running backs for week 13:

1. Thomas Jones, Jets (at Bills): The first time that Jones faced the Bills this season, he rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and only the Raiders have allowed more rushing TDs than the Bills (16). Since the Jets want QB Mark Sanchez to air it out less and less (his attempts have gone from 35 to 30 to 21 to 17), Jones better bring his lunch-pail tonight.

2. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Colts): As well as Johnson has played in the past six weeks (125+ rushing yards every week), you can consider Johnson 1(a) -- not #2 -- in this week's rankings. During their five-game winning streak, Johnson has rushed for seven touchdowns. Although the Colts have a middle-of-the-pack run defense on the season, they've given up the 11th-most fantasy points to opposing RBs in the past three weeks.

3. DeAngelo Williams, Panthers (vs Buccaneers): DeAngelo has cooled off a bit with no touchdowns in the past three weeks and only one 100-yard game during that span. The first time that Williams faced the Buccaneers this season, he carried the ball 30 times for 152 yards and two scores. Expect more of the same against the league's third-worst rush defense.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (at Cardinals): The Cardinals were the league's top-ranked run defense earlier in the season, but they have dropped to 14th in the NFL against the run (108.6 ypg allowed). In four of the past five weeks, they have allowed an opposing running back to eclipse the century mark. Surprisingly, Peterson has only three 100-yard games on the season, but he is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (vs Texans): MJD has rushed for more rushing touchdowns (13) than any other running back. (Of course, none of those are as famous as the TD that he didn't score.) That said, Jones-Drew faces a Texans run defense that turned itself around after the first three weeks. In week 3, however, MJD rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Football: Top 25 QBs for Week 13

It's time to put up or shut up. If you haven't yet clinched a playoff berth in your fantasy league, it likely comes down to week 13 for you as most fantasy leagues start their playoffs in week 14.

And to paraphrase Bill Parcells, this is why you buy those cheat sheets, do those mock drafts, etc. -- to get into (and win in) the playoffs.

Here are my top 5 quarterbacks for week 13:

1. Peyton Manning, Colts (vs Titans): Manning is the only QB to average over 300 passing yards per game (310.5) and is second in passing touchdowns (24). While the Titans and their defense have been playing better lately, they have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns (25) this season.

2. Brett Favre, Vikings (at Cardinals): In his past four games, Favre has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, Arizona allows the fourth-most passing yards (258.3 ypg).

3. Drew Brees, Saints (at Redskins): Brees is coming off a five-TD performance against the Patriots in what was arguably the most important regular-season game in team history. Although this week's opponent (Washington) allows the fewest passing yards in the NFL (170.4 ypg), Brees and the Saints offense are firing on all cylinders right now.

4. Tom Brady, Patriots (at Dolphins): Brady failed to connect on a TD pass last week, but he had 332 passing yards against the Dolphins in their first match-up. With targets like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it's not likely that Brady goes TD-less in back-to-back games.

5. Philip Rivers, Chargers (at Chiefs): Rivers has posted three consecutive 100+ QB ratings and this week he faces the Browns, who have allowed the ninth-most passing yards (233.4 ypg) this season. In the past four games, Rivers has thrown eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Fantasy Football - RB Studs for Week 12

Here are three running backs that I expect to have a big week in week 12:

Marion Barber, Cowboys: You could argue that the Cowboys have the most talented trio of running backs in the league. Yet they haven't exploited their ability of their backs as much as I think they could (or should) have this season. Last weekend, the Cowboys gave Marion "The Barbarian" his first 20-carry workload of the season. Although he didn't reach paydirt, MBIII rushed for 99 yards and had his best game since week 2. This week, Barber faces the Raiders, who have given more rushing touchdowns (16) than any other team this season. Only the Bills and Browns have allowed more fantasy points than the Raiders this season. On a short week, the Cowboys and Barber should be able to wear down the Raiders defensive front and get their offense back on track.

Ricky Williams, Dolphins: With Ronnie Brown out for the season, Williams had a three-TD performance (two rushing and one receiving) in his first start of the season last week in prime time against the Carolina Panthers. In the past two games, Williams has received 20+ carries and 100+ yards in both games and this week should be no different. The Bills, who have one of the league's best pass defenses, struggle against the run. In fact, no team has allowed opposing running backs to score more fantasy points on the season.

Jason Snelling, Falcons: Provided that Michael "The Burner" Turner is out for another week, Snelling should be in for a big day against the Buccaneers. With Turner suffering a high-ankle sprain two games ago, Snelling has scored three touchdowns and has put up 35 fantasy points in the past two weeks. This week, he faces the Buccaneers, who are allowing a league-worst 168.9 rushing yards per game. Turner did practice yesterday, but it is unusual for players to only miss one game with this type of injury. If Turner can go, that would diminish Snelling's fantasy value significantly so make sure to check the actives/inactives for the game.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 12

Last week was my worst week of the season in picking games against the spread (ATS) as I had my first O-for of the season. My goose egg dropped my 2009 cumulative record to 18-15 ATS.

With no help from me, collectively, we (our four "handicappers") went 7-5 in week 11 to improve to 72-59-1 (55%) versus the spread on the season.

Reader beware but here are my week 12 picks:

Dolphins -3 (over Bills): What the Dolphins do well the Bills do poorly. Despite having one of the league's best pass defenses, the Bills rank 31st in the NFL in rushing yards allowed (165.9 ypg) and rushing touchdowns (15). Even without Ronnie Brown, the Dolphins have an explosive running game as evidenced by Ricky Williams' three-TD (two rushing, one receiving) performance in prime-time against the Panthers last week. Winners of five of their past seven, Miami has gotten itself back on track and into the playoff picture while the Bills are conducting seven-hour interviews with potential coaching replacements.

Seahawks -3 (over Rams): The Seahawks are bad. The Rams are bad. But in this case, "bad" does not equal "bad." Granted the Rams are playing better lately, but if you remember, the Seahawks beat the Rams 28-0 in their first matchup in week 1. The Rams' offense is one-dimensional with Steven Jackson and the Rams will be without QB Marc Bulger this week and perhaps the rest of the season. Facing eight-men fronts, it really is amazing that Jackson is second in the NFL in rushing yards. But the Seahawks have a much more balanced team than the Rams and should be able to put this one away early.

Patriots +1.5 (over Saints): The Saints face their biggest challenge to their unbeaten streak when they host the Patriots on Monday Night Football. The Saints have scored 24 points or more every game this season, but they have allowed five of their past six opponents to score 20+ points and they haven't yet faced an offense nearly as explosive as the Patriots' offense. Tom Brady has thrown for 300+ yards in five consecutive games. During that five-game span, the Patriots have held four of their opponents to 17 points or less. The lone exception was Indianapolis, who scored 21 of their 35 points in the fourth quarter. With two high-powered offenses, I'm taking the defense that has been more consistent lately.

Ronnie Brown placed on IR

The Miami Dolphins have placed running back Ronnie Brown on injured reserve (IR), which ends his season.

For the second time in the past three years, Brown will play less than ten games in a season.

When Brown played only seven games in 2007, he was playing as well as any running back in the league. In his final five games of that season, Brown had 850 combined rushing and receiving yards during that span.

After a down (but full) year in 2008, Brown was playing well in 2009 before suffering a season-ending injury to his right foot last week.

On the season, Brown had 648 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in nine games.

Last week, Ricky Williams rushed 20 times for 102 yards and he will be expected to carry the load for the Dolphins. Lex Hilliard will move into the back-up role.

This week, the Dolphins play the Carolina Panthers, who have allowed the 25th-most rushing yards in the NFL.

Ginn Jr. returns two kickoffs for 100-yard scores

The Miami Dolphins swept their season series with the New York Jets with a lot of help from a player who recently found his way into the coach's doghouse.

Ted Ginn Jr., who was benched as a receiver and didn't catch a pass, returned two kickoffs in the third quarter for 100-yard scores. (Technically, the second return was 101 yards.)

Ginn Jr. becomes the first player to return two kickoffs for scores in the same quarter since Green Bay's Travis Williams did so against the Browns in 1967.

Before today's game, Ginn Jr., who was drafted by the Dolphins with the ninth-overall pick in 2007, never had a kickoff return in the NFL for more than 52 yards.

Not counting today's touchdowns, his only other return touchdown was a punt return he had during his rookie season.

Joey Porter out vs Bills

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter is inactive due to a hamstring injury for this afternoon's game against the Buffalo Bills, per David Neal of the Miami Herald.

Charlie Anderson will start in Porter's place.

The Dolphins are one of three division winners from 2008 that have started the season with an 0-3 record. The Titans, who are trailing the Jaguars 30-9 in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers, who have a week 4 bye, are the other two winless division winners through three weeks.

Pennington is done for the year

An interesting stat about Dolphins QB Chad Pennington will remain intact.

According to Omar Kelly and Dave Hyde of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Pennington, who had an MRI today, was diagnosed with a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder and he'll miss the remainder of the season.

Coach Tony Sparano wouldn't confirm the diagnosis.

"If, and again I don't know the details so I'd rather not go down that road; but the leadership thing can't be water off the duck's back, I think it's a major issue. [We would miss] I think experience of a guy of his caliber in the huddle like that," Sparano said (via the Sun-Sentinel). "We'll see what happens, we aren't sure."

The Dolphins are now 0-3 and only three teams have made the playoffs with an 0-3 start since 1990.

That being said, every year that Pennington has played 16 games, his team has made the playoffs. Assuming (safely) that Pennington doesn't play in week 4, his streak will remain alive even if the Dolphins miss the playoffs (very likely) in 2009.

However, will his career be over?

He's already had two shoulder surgeries before. Provided the diagnosis that the Sun-Sentinel is reporting is accurate, I think it's a safe bet that Pennington has played his last game in the NFL.

Chad Henne, who was drafted by the Dolphins in the second round last year, will take over a year earlier than scheduled. In yesterday's game, Henne completed 10 of 19 passes for 92 yards and one interception.

2009 AFC East Prediction

Over the next two days, we will project the final standings and team records for all eight divisions as well as our post-season picks. We'll begin with the AFC East.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Prediction: 12-4 (Patriots Schedule | Patriots Forum)

The Patriots missed the playoffs last year as many predicted after the Pats had lost Tom Brady to a season-ending knee injury in the first half of the first game of the season. Yet the Patriots barely missed the post-season with an 11-5 record (the same record as the division-winning Miami Dolphins) even if that is five fewer wins than they had with Brady at the helm in 2007. Although they had a scare in the third pre-season game when Washington's Albert Haynesworth landed on his shoulder, Brady looked like his 2007 self when he hit Randy Moss on two touchdown passes in the first half. In 2008, the Patriots finished fourth in the NFL in rushing TDs (21) and sixth in rushing yards (2278). They finished ranked eighth in the NFL in scoring defense (19.3 ppg) and tenth in total defense (309.0) last year. Although they've traded Richard Seymour to Oakland over Labor Day weekend, it's hard to imagine that the balanced, well-coached Patriots team will win fewer games than they did in 2008 now that they have a healthy Tom Brady.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .590 winning percentage in 2008 (3rd)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (7): vs Atlanta, vs Baltimore, vs Tennessee, vs Miami, at Indianapolis, at Miami, vs Carolina

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 39 (13.0 per season)

Sparano takes team to see GI Joe

Even I could have handled the Dolphins' practice today.

After a walkthrough of 25 plays, coach Tony Sparano decided to cancel the practice and take the team to the movies to see G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, according to Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

"The reason I like doing those kinds of things is I like to make sure the guys, first of all, get a chance to know that I have a heart somewhere under there," Sparano said, "and second of all that you appreciate what those guys have done. This group has worked really hard."

Last year, Sparano took the team to see The Express, which was about Ernie Davis of Syracuse.

The reason Sparano chose G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra?

"This thing here, I just figured there'd be a lot of things blowing up and people doing all those things, so I thought it was pretty good," Sparano said. "And it had a nice-looking woman in it, too, for 'em."

Good thinking coach. If it weren't for the movies, where else would professional football players in Miami see a "nice-looking woman"?

Davone Bess impersonated on Twitter

Dolphins receiver Davone Bess was being impersonated on Twitter under the name "Lambo_Weezy," which currently shows a Twitter page that doesn't exist. However, on Monday night, Lambo_Weezy had 1200 followers, per Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post.

Lambo_Weezy challenged Titans RB Chris Johnson to a foot race and Johnson accepted. Johnson, who ran a 4.24 forty at the NFL Combine, accepted the challenge from "Bess," who ran a 4.8 forty.

"Relatively speaking, I don't know what the damage is, but no one wants to be impersonated," [Bess' agent Kenny] Zuckerman said. "It's not identify theft in the true sense, with someone using their credit or opening up accounts in his name, but it definitely can be troublesome to someone who is famous."

NFL teams should set up a page on their team websites that lists all players and their Twitter account user names, if they have one. Or if they don't. They can do the same with other social-networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Tumblr, etc.

Then, it's easy for the media or whomever to verify when a player is making real claims, statements, etc. And when they are not.

Ronnie Brown feels like he's "more explosive"

Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown, who made his first Pro Bowl last year, has even bigger expectations for himself in 2009, per David Neal of the Miami Herald.

Those expectations come from Brown losing some weight this off-season and feeling like he's "more explosive.''

As far as Pro Bowls are concerned, he says "that I want to go back every year. Obviously, I've got to build on what I did.'' The next Pro Bowl - and Super Bowl - will be played in Miami.

''As far as shape goes, he's outstanding right now,'' said Dolphins coach Tony Sparano. "That sounds like a company line, but I mean it. In the weight room the guy is super right now. He weighs 230 pounds, he's running better, he is stronger, so all of those things from a progress standpoint I see as positives.''

''He knows our system right now, understands what we expect from him, that is a positive too,'' Sparano said. "I would expect that without hesitations, without any of those things right now from a physical standpoint, and without any of those limitations, that he takes the next step in having a super year.''

Perhaps, it'll lead to a "super" start to the season for Brown for a change.

In Brown's four seasons, he has struggled in the first two weeks of the year. And then had a big week three.
Game 1: 4 games, 54 carries, 142 rushing yards (2.63 avg), 2 rushing touchdowns
Game 2: 4 games, 49 carries, 163 rushing yards (3.33 avg), 0 rushing touchdowns
Game 3: 4 games, 89 carries, 447 rushing yards (5.02 avg), 7 rushing touchdowns

Vontae Davis - not a noisy driver?

Contrary to a report in The Daily Illini, the University of Illinois student paper, the Miami Dolphins dispute that Vontae Davis was arrested on June 9th, per Brian Biggane of the Palm Beach Post.

The Daily Illini reported that Davis was arrested for "unnecessary vehicular noise" and "driving without a valid license."

However, according to a team spokesman, Davis was in Miami that morning for a team practice.

"It would have been almost physically impossible for him to have been in Champaign that day," [Dolphins spokesman Harvey] Greene said.

Davis, who was the team's first-round pick, was linked to "character concerns" prior to the NFL draft. He said he hasn't been in Champaign (IL) since February. However, he had his wallet stolen before leaving school and he reported the theft.

Was someone else using his stolen/lost driver's license?

"That's the only thing I can think of," said Davis. "But that shouldn't be able to work if the police know that person doesn't look like me."

Most importantly, it sure is comforting to know that the Champaign police are ridding their streets of "noisy" drivers.

Adalius Thomas not "pouring gas" on Rex comments

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has been involved in a well-publicized verbal spat with Dolphins LB Channing Crowder.

Before that, he said he wasn't in New York to "kiss Bill Belichick's rings."

Earlier in the week, Belichick responded with a simple, "I have a lot of respect for Rex. We’ve always had great battles with the Jets, so I’m sure that will continue. It’s a good rivalry."

While Crowder may get into it with Ryan, Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas, who played for Ryan in Baltimore, won't.

"It’s funny," Thomas said. "It’s something that you normally don’t see in the media in June so it’s something you (reporters) really jump all over and really go from New York to Miami and then come here with it and expect me to pour gas on it. No," he said with a laugh, "no thank you."

So, if you're keeping track at home, Ryan has now made brash comments about the Patriots and the Dolphins.

It has to be only a matter of time before the Bills are included - and, even better, if it's directed at Terrell Owens.

Rex Ryan tells Crowder to "send his father" after him

The war of words between Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder and New York Jets coach Rex Ryan continues...

Last week, Crowder congratulated Ryan on being "the OTA Super Bowl winner."

Ryan responded yesterday by saying preparation leads to championships.

"I don't know this Channing Crowder, but all I know is he's all [tatted] up," he said. "He's right about one thing: I'm a first-year head coach. But I've been around the game my entire life. I'm no different than I've ever been. It's just that more people are listening. I think he's wrong. I think you do win in June. I think you win with your preparation."

Ryan then added, with a smile, "If I was younger, I'd handle him myself."

Not surprisingly, Crowder had a response to Ryan's comments.

''He says he'd take care of me if he was younger?'' Crowder told the Miami Herald last night. "I'd have beat the hell out of that big old joker. Or if he really wants to get retro, my daddy or my uncle could have handled him. Don't get big. Win with preparation? Start watching some tape and learn who your rival is. Come on now.''

Today, Ryan responded to Crowder telling him to send his father after him.

"Let's see if he can top this one," Ryan said (laughing). "I've walked over tougher guys going to a fight." Later, he added, "He can send himself and his father after me."

Speaking of fathers, Buddy Ryan, father of Rex Ryan, says that the Jets could be in the Super Bowl if their offensive and defensive lines stay healthy.

Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum! It's go time. I expect to see Buddy try to lift a TV over his head or something.

Dolphins want more consistency from Jason Allen

As Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald points out, Jason Allen and the Miami Dolphins share something in common. Their inconsistency.

Allen, who the Dolphins drafted in the first round as a safety in 2006, has been asked to move from safety to cornerback to safety, et cetera.

''Well, honestly, with Jason unfortunately he's been bouncing around a little bit positionally,'' Sparano admitted last week. "When we came here, he was safety and then we looked at him as a safety. We moved him to corner. You know how the whole thing went down. So right now it's just, again, he's a guy that from a consistency standpoint that really needs to become consistent out there at what he does well.''

He heads into the 2009 season as a cornerback, but he spent all of the 2008 off-season preparing as though he would be safety.

In his own defense, Allen argues that it's not so easy to move back and forth between the secondary positions with different mindsets, different drills to prepare and different skills necessary to be successful.

''You guys look at it as it's easy, he can just go back and forth,'' Allen said. "But it doesn't work like that. When you train all offseason to play safety and don't train as a corner, it's hard. Corners do different drills; they have to be quick on their feet. Safeties don't do that. That's about being in the middle of the field and working on your drops and making sure you can support the run.''

However, he's not making excuses.

''I want to be a starter,'' Allen said. "I have to come out and prepare myself as a starter. I know I'm capable of doing things. I think at times last year I showed I could do it. I just have to be more consistent.''

It will be an uphill battle for (Jason) Allen.

The spot opposite Will Allen that was vacated by Andre Goodman, who signed with Denver this off-season, is likely to be won by free-agent signee Eric Green or one of the two rookie cornerbacks the Dolphins drafted in the first two rounds - Vontae Davis and Sean Smith - this year.

Will Ginn be a No. 1 WR in 2009?

Not since Chris Chambers had 1,118 yards in 2005 has a Miami Dolphins receiver had a 1,000-yard season. In that same season, however, Chambers led the NFL in dropped passes.

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano says that there's a No. 1 receiver on this squad, but he's not sure exactly who it is yet.

''I would say that, yeah, I would say I feel that way, sure,'' Sparano said last week. "Who that guy is, I am not quite sure of yet. I think there are a couple of contenders out there that I am curious to watch when we get through this whole thing.''

Salguero argues that player has to be Ted Ginn Jr., who was the team's first-round pick in 2007.

He goes on to write that Greg Camarillo is coming off a knee injury while Davone Bess doesn't have elite speed (or size). Plus, Patrick Turner and Brian Hartline are both rookies. So, in other words, if it's not Ginn, then who could it be?

Ginn improved from 2007 by recording 56 receptions for 790 yards and two touchdowns in 2008. However, he was inconsistent.

He had two or fewer receptions in six of his 16 games played. He had five games with fewer than 20 receiving yards and only had four games with 60 or more receiving yards.

This year, Ginn will likely post overall numbers that are higher than his 2008 totals. The question is will there be greater consistency in the level of his performance throughout all 16 games.

Ronnie Brown: one of league's best?

Per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown believes he is among the league's elite runners.

''I definitely do,'' Brown said Thursday after the Dolphins finished their latest organized team activities session. "You got to have confidence on this level and, you know, if I didn't, I wouldn't want to be playing this game. So, obviously, when their names are brought up I want my name to be in that same group.''

After reconstructive knee surgery in October 2007, Brown returned after only seven months. The normal recovery time is 10-12 months.

Playing the first 16-game season of his career, Brown averaged 57.3 rushing yards per game, which was the lowest average of his four-year career. He finished the season with 916 yards and 10 touchdowns (five of which came in week 3 against the Patriots).

This year, the tentativeness that Brown had last year is gone.

''As far as [being in] shape goes, he's outstanding right now,'' coach Tony Sparano said. "I just watched the film [of Thursday's practice] a little while ago and he makes this catch on the sideline and extends for the ball and ends up hyperextending both legs to do this, and there's no sign of any of those hesitations, any of the things we went through a year ago."

Brown, who the Dolphins drafted second overall, was part of an excellent running back class in 2005. Other RBs drafted in 2005 include Frank Gore (49ers), Marion Barber (Cowboys), Brandon Jacobs (Giants) and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams (Bucs).

Brown says he hopes to be as good as or even better than the league's best: Adrian Peterson, LaDainian Tomlinson, etc. However, he may only be the fourth-best back in his draft class.

''My goal in this league is to be the best I can be and at the same time to be amongst the elite guys that do what I do,'' Brown said. "Adrian Peterson does a tremendous job. LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Turner, all those guys do a great job. My goal is to go out and compete and be the best I can be and be as good or better than them.''

Entering a contract year, Brown will land a huge contract if he has as big of a year as he and Sparano expect of him. The question remains can he stay healthy. If so, will he continue to have big years if he lands that big contract.

Dolphins sign Will Allen to extension

Per Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald, Dolphins cornerback Will Allen signed a two-year extension with the 'Phins.

Allen, who was in the final year of his contract, will earn $16.2 million over the next three years with $10 million of it guaranteed. (In addition, Drew Rosenhaus, Allen's agent, got Allen and his friends a discount on lunch at the Dolphins' cafeteria.)

"It's a no-brainer,'' Rosenhaus said. "We're happy to sign him to the extension. It was a real pleasure working with Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland over the past few weeks to get it done, too.''

While Allen starts at right cornerback, the Dolphins will need to fill the vacancy created on the left side by Andre Goodman's departure to Denver.

The Dolphins drafted corners in the first two rounds of this year's draft when they selected Vontae Davis (Illinois) in the first round and Sean Smith (Utah) in the second round. They also signed free agent Eric Green from Arizona.

Allen, the Giants' first-round pick in 2001, had 50 tackles, three interceptions and one sack in 2008.

Randy Starks busted for aggravated battery

Miami Dolphins defensive end Randy Starks was arrested in South Beach early this morning, according to the Miami Herald.

The moron was driving a four-person "freightliner" through bumper-to-bumper traffic with 12 others in the vehicle including a woman on his lap.

When an officer noticed that there were 13 people in the truck and tried to stop Starks, Starks kept driving, hit the officer in the chest with the vehicle and eventually pinned the officer against a car in the other lane.

Therefore, Starks was charged with aggravated battery and held on $10,000 bond.

Starks, who was a third-round pick by the Titans in 2004, had 29 tackles, three sacks and one interception in 2008 with the Dolphins. He started in four games and played in all 16 games last year.

If a football career doesn't work out for Starks, there is always a career in the circus since he already has the clowns-piling-into-a-car trick in his repertoire.

Time is now for Ted Ginn Jr.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron got his one-year tenure off to a poor start by having to explain why he selected receiver Ted Ginn Jr. with the ninth overall pick in 2007.

Two years later, Ginn Jr. knows that now is the time that for him "to really show what he was drafted here to do," as Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said last month.

As Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald points out, the Dolphins passed on receivers, such as Hakeem Nicks and Kenny Britt, to take cornerback Vontae Davis.

Plus, they didn't pursue any of the free-agent receivers, such as T.J. Houshmandzadeh or Terrell Owens a.k.a. "The Player," or trade for someone like Anquan Boldin, who expressed interest in returning to his home state to play for the Dolphins.
''They didn't need to get someone else,'' Ginn said. "We already have a good receiver corps.''
The two things that coach Tony Sparano would like to see from Ginn are using his ''ability to make people miss and take it the distance'' after the catch and grown in "his knowledge of the coverage.''

In his second NFL season, Ginn had 56 catches for 790 yards in 2008.

Brennan Marion continues to overcome obstacles

Miami Dolphins undrafted wide receiver Brennan Marion, who grew up in a drug-infested housing project in Pittsburgh, has a history of overcoming obstacles.

Per Carlos Frias of the Palm Beach Post, Marion was nearly homeless after transferring from Foothill College to De Anza College in California.

Marion and his former high school teammate Chuck Thompson, who went to Foothill and then De Anza with Marion, would sometimes sleep "on the bathroom floor, the locker room, the bus or the press box" while surviving on "Gatorade, electrolyte pills and the guy at 7-11 would give us free bags of chips and cookies."
"I'd rather be homeless than go back to Pittsburgh," Marion said after his second full practice with the Dolphins.
At De Anza, he led junior college players in receiving with 1,196 yards and 16 touchdowns on 60 receptions.

From De Anza, he transferred to Tulsa, where he had 39 receptions for 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2007. His 31.9 yards per reception broke a 30-year-old NCAA record.

In 2008, he averaged 25.9 yards per catch when he caught 43 passes for 1,112 yards and eight touchdowns. However, in December he tore his ACL and simply called it "bad timing."
"I haven't played a down. Haven't caught a pass. Haven't scored a touchdown. So I haven't accomplished any of my goals," Marion said. "I have a goal, and I have tunnel vision on that goal."
The other receivers currently on the Dolphins roster include Chris Williams, Ernest Wilford, Todd Lowber, Brian Hartline, Ted Ginn Jr., Patrick Turner, Brandon London, Greg Camarillo, Anthony Armstrong and Davone Bess.

It's hard to not root for Marion in a Rudy-like way.

Ricky Williams, 2 more years to retirement?

Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams is going to retire. After two more seasons, that is.
''When you get older,'' he said, "you appreciate humdrum. I will be 32 on Thursday. Life was almost more fun when it was in flux. But there's more stability now, and it's easier. There's always temptations, but they're fleeting thoughts. I have a better idea what I want to do with my life now. To me, that's a better life. I'm in a good place.''
After retirement, Williams plans to finish the credits (60) he needs for a pre-med degree and focus on a career in osteopathic medicine.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Ricky Williams, D.O. (osteopaths use D.O. instead of M.D.) prescribes a patient marijuana for medicinal purposes. Could he (or the patient) possibly keep a straight face?

In the meantime, Williams says he has never been this happy playing football.
''This is the happiest I've been playing football in a while,'' he said. `` Ronnie Brown has a lot to do with it. . . . So does Bill [ Parcells]. Bill and I are happy to be with each other -- he likes the way I work, that I'm a student of the game. He likes my story. I found a place where I fit, a place I feel proud to call home.''
Last season, Williams rushed for 659 yards and four touchdowns and caught 29 passes for 219 yards and one touchdown.

Jason Taylor to "earn" his way on Dolphins' roster?

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins have made it clear where Jason Taylor stands.

Not only was Taylor, who re-signed with the Dolphins last week, told that he would be a "situational" player, who plays 20 to 25 snaps per game, but he was told that he's not guaranteed a roster spot if he doesn't outperform other (younger) players.

Taylor, who was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, had an injury-shortened season with the Washington Redskins last year. In 13 games, Taylor had 29 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks with Washington.

After being released from the 'Skins due to his lack of commitment to their off-season program, Taylor will participate in the Dolphins' off-season program.

Taylor holds the Dolphins' records for sacks in a season (18 1/2 in 2002) and a career (117). He is also fourth all-time in games played (172) in the franchise behind Dan Marino (242), Bob Kuechenberg (196) and Nat Moore (183).

Dolphins hire Michael Dee as CEO

The Miami Dolphins have hired Michael Dee as chief executive officer of the team and Dolphin Stadium.

For the past five years, Dee has been chief operating officer of the Boston Red Sox. Before joining the Red Sox, Dee spent eight years with the San Diego Padres.
"I'm thrilled to be able to add someone of Mike's background and expertise to our organization," Ross said. "His accomplishments with the Red Sox greatly expanded their business footprint and amplified the team's standing as one of the premier franchises in professional sports."
Dee has said it's their "goal is to fill Dolphin Stadium game in and game out" and make Dolphins' games the "best that the NFL has to offer" from the fan's perspective.

Is Vontae Davis misunderstood?

Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis had some question marks heading into the NFL draft.

Primarily, the concerns surrounded "character issues" and that he might turn out like his older brother Vernon. In other words, he might be a physical freak of nature that doesn't live up to his potential on the football field.

Per David J. Neal of the Miami Herald, many close to Davis, who was raised by his grandmother Adaline, think Davis is misunderstood.
''He didn't have a lot of life outside of football and study hall,'' [former Illinois assistant coach and current New Mexico head coach Mike] Locksley said. "If you see him, he probably has his Bible with him. He's a strong, spiritual kid.''
And if you don't believe Locksley, just ask Jimmy Vontae himself.
''Everybody who knows Vontae knows that I am a great person, a great player,'' he said, "and Bill Parcells speaks louder than words, and for him to draft me, he knows what type of person I am.''
If Vontae lives up to his potential and the "character issues" don't present themselves in Miami like he and his supporters say they won't, the Dolphins would have one of the steals of the first round.

Dolphins cut QB John Beck

The Miami Dolphins have released QB John Beck according to the Miami Herald.

Beck was drafted by the one-and-done Cam Cameron administration in the second round of the 2007 draft class.

Before the NFL draft, it was expected that the 'Fins would let Beck go. When the Dolphins drafted West Virginia QB Pat White in the second round on Saturday and said he would compete at the QB position - and not at WR, the writing was on the wall.

The 2009 starter is Chad Pennington and White and Chad Henne, last year's second-round pick, will compete for the starting gig in 2010.

Beck is all class. It deserves to be mentioned that after being let go, he called to thank many Dolphins' employees per the Miami Herald.
''I've never had a player do that before,'' one employee said.
Only one-third of the 2007 draftees remain of the roster: WR Ted Ginn Jr., NT Paul Soliai and P Brandon Fields.

Dolphins won't trade Brown, White to play to QB?

Heading into the NFL draft, there was some speculation that Miami Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown was on the trading block.

In his best Josh McDaniels impression, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland tells the Miami Herald that he thinks the rumor started because he has replied to inquiries saying that ''everyone'' is available for the "right price."
"Before the draft, you have a lot of people calling. Somehow, those things take on a life of their own. ... We're not looking to trade Ronnie Brown,'' Ireland said. "You can write that.''
While they won't trade Brown, they'll likely use their second-round pick (West Virginia's Pat White) as his replacement for the Wildcat. When the Dolphins introduced the Wildcat formation in week three against the Patriots, Brown scored five touchdowns (four rushing and one passing).

Chad Pennington is the starter in 2009, but the Dolphins had previously stated that they want Chad Henne to start by 2010. With the drafting of White, Ireland says that White will battle Henne as the QB of the future.
"They're going to be competing for the position,'' Ireland said.
White is the third QB drafted in the second round in the past three years by the Dolphins. However, it's easy to identify which one is not like the other (out of White, Henne and John Beck).

Beck was drafted by previous regime led by Cam Cameron.

Although anyone can be traded for the right price, it may be that Beck will be traded for any price.

April 25, 2009

And with the 25th-overall pick...

The Miami Dolphins have selected Vontae Davis, CB from Illinois.

Davis, who is the brother of San Francisco's Vernon Davis, has all the physical tools, but some question his character.

New England is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

April 19, 2009

Is Ronnie Brown on the trading block?

Michael Lombardi of National Football Post has heard (and he emphasized the word heard) that the Miami Dolphins might be willing to deal RB Ronnie Brown.

As Lombardi points out, Brown only had three games rushing for 100+ yards in 2008 despite rushing for 916 yards on the season.

However, Brown had only 214 carries, which is an average of only 13-14 carries per game. Of all rushers that had more than 916 yards, only one (Derrick Ward of the Giants) had fewer rushing attempts (182).

Brown, the Dolphins first-round pick in 2005 (#2 overall), had 10 rushing touchdowns in 2008.

Before getting injured in week seven in 2007, Brown was averaging a combined 141.6 yards per game (86 rushing and 55.6 receiving) and had four straight weeks of rushing for 100+ yards. He was leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage before the injury.

In any event, as we have seen with Jay Cutler, Anquan Boldin (now available for trade), etc., virtually every player can be traded for the right offer. If Brown's the next, don't be surprised.

Gibril Wilson thinks secondary can be league's best

Miami Dolphins free safety Gibril Wilson, signed in the off-season, was interviewed on WQAM radio by Kim Bokamper on his "Dolphins Tonight" show.

Wilson feels the sky is the limit for the secondary.
"I think we're going to be a very tight-knit group," Wilson said, "and I think we can be the best secondary in the league if we all just put our heads together and put the talent together and make it happen."
The Dolphins lost cornerback Andre Goodman via free agency to Denver. Eric Allen, who played with Arizona, will replace Goodman. The other starters will be Wilson, strong safety Yeremiah Bell and left cornerback Will Allen.

No matter how closely they "put their heads together," they Dolphins have as much chance of being the "best secondary in the league" as I have of being the next American Idol.

However, I do expect the Dolphins to draft a cornerback in my mock draft, which will be released within the next day or two.

More details on Donte Whitner's arrest

There are more details about the arrest of Bills safety Donte Whitner, who was arrested in Cleveland on charges of aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest early this morning.

Per the Buffalo News, Whitner was subdued by taser by off-duty officers as Whitner attempted to join the fracas of a "near riot" that was taking place outside of Cleveland's House of Blues.
"Officers attempting to control the scene denied Whitner access to the area at which time he attempted to force his way past the officers in an aggressive manner," Cleveland police said in a statement.
A birthday party for former Buckeye teammate Ted Ginn Jr. was going on in the club, but it's not known whether Whitner was there to celebrate with Ginn.

Aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest carry maximum penalties of 180 days and 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine and a $750 fine, respectively.

Jason Taylor talking to Dolphins

Per Tim Graham of ESPN, free agent defensive end Jason Taylor admits that he has had some early talks with the Miami Dolphins, where he spent 11 of his 12 seasons.
"We talked," Taylor said. "I'm not going to get into what we talked about and the details of it, but they know how I feel and what I'd like to do. I know how they feel and what they'd like to do, what they're looking for. But we talked, and I'll leave it at that."
Taylor, who was the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, says that he was the Dolphins "biggest fan" last year.
"I'll always be a Dolphin," Taylor said. "There was no bigger fan last year than me. I'm leaving the field from Redskins games and running to see what the Dolphins are doing and checking my phone throughout the day. Those guys on that team will tell you: I was in contact the whole time."
The Redskins, who acquired Taylor last year, released him this off-season as he was unwilling to participate in 75 percent of the team's off-season workout program.

He left $8.5 million on the table in Washington. However, he says that he won't play for the league minimum either.

Re-signing Taylor would be a good PR move by the Dolphins, but his best days are behind him as a 34-year-old player.

Channing Crowder speaks for Jason Taylor

Miami Dolphins LB Channing Crowder says that Jason Taylor wants to play for Miami (again).
"I went fishing with J.T. two weeks ago; he wants to be a Dolphin," Crowder said.
The Redskins, who traded for him last off-season, released Taylor this off-season citing his unwillingness to commit to the off-season workout program. Taylor preferred to stay in Miami to be with his family.
"I would love to have J.T. back," Crowder said. "It would add a whole new dimension to a defense that, in spurts, looked really good last year. He's one of my closest friends. He kind of brought me up in the league when I was a young guy, so I love him to death."
The Dolphins received the Redskins second-round pick this year and their sixth-round pick next year as compensation for Taylor last year.

Taylor, who was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, has 120.5 career sacks in 12-year career.

Boldin "would love to" play in Florida

Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin, who has two years remaining on his four-year contract, was a guest on ESPN's 760 AM in Miami.

Boldin is unsure whether he'll be back in Arizona in 2009.
Honestly, I don’t know,” Boldin said. “It’s at a point right now where there’s not any discussion between myself and the team.”
When speaking to 560-AM in Miami last September, Boldin's agent Drew Rosenhaus called it a "shame" that his client was wearing a Cardinals jersey in the Arizona-Miami game instead of a Dolphins jersey.

Today, Boldin was asked about his thoughts on playing in Florida.
“As far as playing in my home state, I would love to,” Boldin said. “I’m a Florida guy and always will be a Florida guy at heart. If it happens, I’ll definitely be grateful.”
Boldin is from Pahokee, FL and went to Florida State.

Parcells and Sparano work out Hakeem Nicks

Per Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post, Miami Dolphins VP Bill Parcells and coach Tony Sparano headed north to Chapel Hill, NC for a private workout with some Tar Heels' players including WR Hakeem Nicks. It is uncommon for Parcells to take a road trip for private workouts.

As Keyshawn Johnson recently pointed out, Parcells prefers bigger receivers unlike Ted Ginn Jr., who is currently the top receiver on the team's depth chart. Nicks is a big receiver (6'0 3/4", 216 pounds) that would fit the mold of what Parcells likes in a receiver.

Nicks had the best game of his career in his last collegiate game, the Meineke Car Care Bowl - 217 receiving yards and 3 TDs.

However, Nicks may not be available when the Dolphins pick at 25 at next month's NFL draft. Some mock drafts have Nicks going to the Jets at 17 or the Bears at 18.

Even if Nicks is still on the board at 25, Johnson doesn't believe that the 'Fins will use their first-round pick on a receiver. There is a good chance the Dolphins will address other areas, such as CB and OLB, in the first round.

As Keyshawn pointed out, the Dolphins are likely to target Cal Poly WR Ramses Barden, an even bigger receiver who is projected as a third-rounder.

March 23, 2009

Keyshawn Johnson on Fins WRs

Keyshawn Johnson thinks that Miami Dolphins' WR Ted Ginn Jr. "had a good year, but he's a guy that is not your elite receiver. He's a good No. 2." Ginn, who was taken ninth in 2007 by the Dolphins, is the only receiver taken in the first round by the Fins in the past 11 years.
"The problem you have with him is he can run like a deer and he can play like a deer - scared."
It's exactly earth-shattered news that Keyshawn is willing to share his opinion on a topic, any topic, and that he doesn't think Ginn is an "elite receiver."

Johnson says he knows what kind of WR Bill Parcells likes. Someone like, well, him. In other words, a receiver that is big, strong and can line up inside or outside.

He went on to say that Parcells believes WRs are "a dime a dozen" so he won't draft one in the first round. The Dolphins have the 25th pick in this year's draft.

Instead, he thinks Parcells will target someone like Cal Poly's Ramses Barden.
"I like his size. He attacks the football," Johnson said. "He doesn't look like he's fast, but he gets down the field because he has a long stride. I think he'd fit good with Ted Ginn."
Barden, who's 6'6" and weighs 227 pounds, is projected as a third-round pick. He improved on his Combine performance in the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day Friday when he ran 4.51 and 4.55.

Samson Satele to Oakland for draft pick

The Miami Dolphins have traded center Samson Steele to the Oakland Raiders for an undisclosed draft pick. Earlier in the month, the Dolphins signed former Raiders center Jake Grove to a five-year contract worth nearly $30 million.

Satele had struggled against some of the bigger nose tackles in the AFC East, such as the Jets' Kris Jenkins and the Patriots' Vince Wilfork. The hope is that Grove, who is an inch taller but roughly the same weight as Satele, will be better able to handle larger nose tackles.

Since being drafted in the second round in 2007, Satele started all 32 games with the Dolphins. The other centers currently on the Raiders' roster are John Wade and Chris Morris.

Laverneus Coles made a huge mistake

WR Laverneus Coles asked out of the final year of his contract with the New York Jets and guaranteed $6 million salary so he could pursue a long-term deal. The Jets obliged.

Although the Buffalo Bills had Coles in for a visit, nobody else seems interested including the Miami Dolphins.

There are plenty of reasons why the Dolphins could be interested. Unlike with his last QB, Coles and Dolphins QB Chad Pennington have a close relationship. Bill Parcells knows Coles very well having drafted him in New York. The Dolphins aren't talented at WR and could use more weapons.

If Parcells doesn't want Coles, what does he know? At least, that is the question that will be in the minds of the 30 teams other than the Dolphins or Jets.

Last year, Coles had 70 receptions for 850 yards and 7 TDs.

Dolphins release Vonnie Holliday

Today the Miami Dolphins released DE Vonnie Holliday, which will save the Dolphins $3.25 million in salary-cap room.
"We thought we were in a negotiating process,'' Holliday said. "But at the 11th hour it turned out it wasn't necessarily a negotiating process. It was more like they decided to go a different route.

"There was a deal on the table and I assume that deal would still be on the table and we would try and negotiate, but there was no negotiation. I'm not bitter at anybody. It's a business. I'm a 12-year guy. I thought my deal was pretty cap-friendly if you will."
Holliday, who's a 12-year veteran, would like to play a couple more years as long as it's for a contender.
"More than anything I want a chance to compete for a ring,'' Holliday said. "I've done very well for myself financially, fortunately…I want a chance to give up some of that for a chance to compete.''
Holliday had 46 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2008. Do the 'Fins contact Jason Taylor, who was released by the Redskins today?

Dolphins spend nearly $50 million on 2 safeties

The Miami Dolphins reached a 5-year deal with safety Gibril Wilson, who was cut by the Oakland Raiders on February 20th. Wilson will earn up to $27.5 million, of which $8 million is guaranteed.

The Dolphins also re-signed safety Jeremiah Bell to a 4-year contract worth $20 million. $10 million of the contract is guaranteed.

Last year, Wilson played strong safety with Oakland. But he will move to free safety, which is where he played when he was with the Giants. Bell will stay at strong safety.

After these moves, the Dolphins are estimated to be $12 million under the salary cap.

Channing Crowder expects to be free agent

The free agency period in the NFL begins at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, February 27th. Miami Dolphins LB Channing Crowder expects to become a free agent.
"They did have the whole season to re-sign me, and they really didn't want to talk about anything, so maybe they didn't like me as a player or whatever it was," Crowder said. "If they want to get into a bidding battle with somebody, that means they really didn't want me anyway.

"I want to play football next year, and I'm confident I can play in the NFL, so I'll play football next year and hopefully it's with the Dolphins. But if it's with somebody else, I know I can play football. They had the first crack at it and they dropped the ball, so we'll see what other teams do. It's their loss."
Crowder, selected in the 3rd round by the Dolphins in 2005, had a career high of 114 tackles and has played his entire 4-year career with the Dolphins.

Dolphins sign Vernon Carey to 6-year deal

Miami Dolphins RT Vernon Carey, who was set to become a free agent on February 27th, signed a 6-year contract with the Dolphins yesterday. Carey can earn up to $42 million and $15 million is guaranteed.
"He brought veteran leadership to that group, an outstanding leader," [Dolphins coach Tony] Sparano said.
LT Jake Long, last year's #1 overall pick, has 4 more years on his 5-year, $57.5 million contract.

Carey, drafted in the first-round of the 2004 draft by the Dolphins, has started the past 59 games.

Is Barbi headed to South Beach?

Bill Parcells is known for bringing in his guys.

He did it with QB Chad Pennington, who was his QB when the two were with the Jets. He did it with Tony Sparano, who was his offensive line coach in Dallas.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald suggests that the next Parcells' guy might be Barbi Bobbi Carpenter, who was drafted in the first-round of the 2006 draft when Parcells was still in Dallas. Carpenter's father, Rob, was a FB with on the Parcells' Giants teams.

If Dallas and Miami work out a deal for Carpenter, who has been labeled a bust, the Cowboys would likely get a 6th- or 7th-round pick in return.

If anyone's going to get something out of Carpenter, it would be Parcells. And the Cowboys would probably get more out of a late-round draft pick than they get out of this former first-rounder.

In 3 seasons, Carpenter has 50 career tackles and 1.5 career sacks.

Time limit of walk-away clause removed from Parcells' contract

Bill Parcells, the Executive VP of Football Operations for the Miami Dolphins, had a clause that allowed him to walk away from the 'Fins and be paid in full within 30 days of a change in team ownership.

Before Stephen Ross, who owns 95% of the team now, took majority ownership of the team from Wayne Huizenga, who owns 5%, Huizenga removed the 30-day window from the contract.

Parcells can leave at any point in time over the remaining 3 years left on his contract and be paid in full. However, Parcells has confirmed that he will stick around for 2009.

Bill Parcells "saw himself" in Rex Ryan

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who replaced Eric Mangini, interviewed for the Miami Dolphins head coaching vacancy last year.

What did Parcells see in Ryan?
"I saw myself," Parcells told The Post yesterday. "That's what I was. I could see it."
So, naturally Parcells' advice to Ryan is "just to be himself."
"He didn't talk about whether he's gonna get two cars or one car, or am I gonna do a TV show?" Parcells said. "He didn't give a bleep about that. "Can I get players and are we gonna be able to win?' I just liked him because I just sensed what he represented and what he wanted to accomplish."
Certainly, the Jets hope that Ryan, who's brother Rob is Eric Mangini's DC in Cleveland, doesn't have a first year like Parcells had (3-12-1).

Bill Parcells: "What does it look like I'm doing?"

At the end of the regular season, speculation began about Bill Parcells' future in Miami as his contract allows him to walk away (and be paid in full on the remaining value of contract) within 30 days of Stephen Ross officially becoming majority owner.

That 30-day clock began yesterday when Ross increased his stake in the franchise to 95%. Wayne Huizenga will retain 5% ownership in the team. Forbes values the franchise at $1 billion.

And Ross says that Parcells will stay, which is what Huizenga was saying a few weeks ago..
"Parcells is in charge," Ross said in a conference call. "He's staying, and I think we're very fortunate to have someone like Bill Parcells, who I think people have come to recognize as probably the best football mind in America."
I'm not sure that Parcells is the "best football mind in America," but the Dolphins' 10-win turnaround that Parcells orchestrated is nothing less than amazing.

Parcells, who's attending the Senior Bowl week, gives the impression that he's staying but in his typical, quotable fashion.
"What does it look like I'm doing?" he said. "What do your eyes tell you?"

"It's not about money," Parcells said. "I've got more than I can spend."
It can be tempting as an owner of a professional sports team to tamper and meddle, but Ross looks like he will do exactly what Huizenga did - let the football minds run the operations.
"When I read the paper, the first section I go to is the sports section," Ross said. "Since I wasn't going to make it as a player, it was a dream to become an owner."
Surprisingly, only the winless Detroit Lions saw a bigger drop in attendance year-over-year than the Miami Dolphins, who saw attendance drop by 9.3%. But continuing to win football games will change that.

Cameron Wake goes from CFL to NFL

Cameron Wake, who had 39 sacks in the past 2 seasons for the B.C. Lions of the CFL, signed a 4-year contract with the Miami Dolphins.

According to his agent, Wake received interest from 17 teams and offers from 8 teams.

Wake was undrafted out of Penn State and signed by the Giants as a rookie free agent.

For 2 consecutive seasons, Wake has won the CFL's Outstanding Defensive Player award. Brent Johnson, also of the B.C. Lions, won the award in 2006.

Huizenga believes Parcells will stay in Miami

Bill Parcells, who signed a 4-year, $16 million contract with the Dolphins last year, has a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave if owner Wayne Huizenga sold a controlling stake in the team. The clause states that he would be paid in full for time remaining on contract if he notified ownership within 30 days of a sale.

Huizenga, who has sold 45% of team and agreed to sell another 50% of team to Stephen M. Ross, has said that the deal could close as soon as a Tuesday after the season ends.

So will Parcells walk and collect a cool $12 million? Or will he continue the process that has started incredibly well but remains incomplete?
"I talked to Bill a couple days ago and he said, 'Hey, I like it here.' So that's all I can say," Huizenga said today.
With the early success and being surrounded by his guys, Parcells has the foundation in place.

It would make sense that Ross continues with the hands-off approach of Huizenga and allow the football guys (Parcells & Co.) to make the football decisions. It also makes sense for him to extend the clause (or do something) to entice Parcells to not just take the money and run.

Falcons' Mike Smith wins NFL Coach of the Year Award

Every year in the NFL, there seems to be a team that catches us by complete surprise. This year, there were two teams.

Two different situations. Two amazing turnaround stories. Two rookie head coaches with new starting QBs on their teams.

In fact, the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins were the longest of long shots to win the Super Bowl as set by pre-season odds. But both teams went on to finish 11-5 and clinch playoff berths.

Today Falcons' coach Mike Smith was named AP Coach of the Year. (See past winners.) Smith edged out Tony Sparano by only 1 vote.
“I’m honored individually, but more so for our coaching staff and our players,” Smith said. “It’s something that our guys have worked very hard to finish the season the way we did and very fortunate that we were able to play in the second season as well.”

“The thing that we tried to establish is that we were going to be very systematic in the way that we’ve done things,” Smith said. “We had a plan and we laid that plan out from the very beginning and how we were going to do business.”
Although they shared being a rookie head coach in common, Smith and Sparano shared a vision of creating teams with discipline, accountability and toughness. Despite their elimination from the playoffs this weekend, both men have changed their franchise's culture of losing.

(Uncharasteristic) mistakes costly for Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins led the NFL in TO differential (+17) in the regular season. Also, they were tied with the NY Giants for fewest giveaways (13) on the season.

Looking out of character, the Dolphins had nearly half as many turnovers (5) today as they committed all season. Pennington threw 4 interceptions and Patrick Cobbs lost a fumble.

Ed Reed intercepted 2 of Pennington's passes and returned one for a TD.

After their 27-9 win today, the Ravens will play the Tennessee Titans next week in Nashville. That means the San Diego Chargers, who beat the Colts last night, will travel to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers.

Chad Pennington wins Comeback Player of the Year

For a second time in three seasons, Chad Pennington has won the AP Comeback Player of the Year Award. Greg Ellis of the Cowboys won it last year in between Pennington. (See past winners)

This season, Pennington threw for a career-high 3653 yards and 19 TDs. More importantly, Pennington threw only 7 INTs for the Dolphins, who led the NFL in turnover differential (+17).
"He was our savior," [teammate Joey] Porter said. "He changed this whole team. He's not the one that's going to brag about it. He's just an old, humble country boy. So I'm going to brag for him."
Pennington had 19 votes while Kerry Collins (Titans) and Jake Delhomme (Panthers) received 6 each. They are followed by Kurt Warner (4), Anquan Boldin (4), Antonio Bryant (4), Joey Porter (3), Ronnie Brown (1), Phillip Rivers (1), Ryan Clark (1) and Willie Anderson (1).

Pennington led the Dolphins to a 10-win improvement over last season and will host the Baltimore Ravens Saturday in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

One and done for Bill Parcells?

ESPN has reported that there is a clause in Bill Parcells contract that would allow him to opt out of his contract if Dolphins' owner Wayne Huizenga sells the team. Huizenga sold 95% of the team to Stephen Ross earlier in the year.
"He's the greatest and I would hope he doesn't leave," Ross said, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "He's in a great situation, I hope, for him."
In order to opt out, Parcells would need to notify Ross within 30 days of when Ross officially becomes majority owner. If Parcells opts out, he would receive $9 million and become a free agent.

This season Parcells took a 1-15 team that traded away their best player (Jason Taylor) and led them to a 10-win turnaround and division championship in one season.

Although a knock on Parcells is that he leaves jobs prematurely, he does leave teams better off than when he arrived. And, of course, Parcells could still possibly stick around this time.

(6) Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins (3)
(5) Indianapolis Colts at winner of San Diego Chargers/Denver Broncos (4)

Week 17 playoff scenarios

I can't recall an NFL season in recent memory with so many important matchups to decide entry into the post-season party like we have had last week and this week. Then again, I can't remember what I did 2 hours ago.

In any event, let's take a look at the current playoff picture. For simplicity sake, we ignore the possibility of a second tie this season.

Teams fall into 4 categories - playoff bound/seed locked, playoff bound/seed TBD, on playoff bubble and eliminated.

AFC Teams:

Playoff bound/seed locked:
Tennessee Titans (1), Pittsburgh Steelers (2), Indianapolis Colts (5)

Playoff bound/seed TBD:
none

On playoff bubble:
Miami Dolphins: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Jets. A Dolphins' loss eliminates them from the playoffs.

New England Patriots: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Bills and Jets win over Dolphins. Bill Belichick stopped short of saying he'd root for the Jets, but that's what he will be doing. If the Dolphins and Pats win, the Pats will get the 6 seed with a Ravens' loss.

New York Jets: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Dolphins and Pats' loss to Buffalo. Loss to Dolphins eliminates Jets' hopes. If the Jets and Pats win, the Jets will get the 6 seed if the Ravens lose.

Baltimore Ravens: Clinch 6 seed with a win over Jaguars or a Patriots loss to Buffalo and a Jets loss to Dolphins.

Denver Broncos: Win AFC West and clinch 4 seed with win over Chargers. Loss eliminates Broncos.

San Diego Chargers: same as Denver Broncos.

Eliminated:
Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders

AFC Playoff Picture

With 2 weeks to go, the AFC and NFC playoff races are interesting. We will take a team-by-team look at both conferences starting with the AFC. Here are current playoff seedings:
1. Tennessee Titans (12-2)
2. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3)
3. New York Jets (9-5)
4. Denver Broncos (8-6)
5. Indianapolis Colts (10-4)
6. Baltimore Ravens (9-5)
AFC East:

New York Jets (9-5): The Jets win the division if they win out (at Seattle and vs Miami). Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

Miami Dolphins (9-5): The Dolphins win the division if they win out (at Kansas City and at NY Jets). Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

New England Patriots (9-5): The Patriots win the division if they win out (vs Arizona and at Buffalo) and the Dolphins and Jets both lose at least 1 game. Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

Buffalo Bills (6-8): Eliminated.

Joey Porter: "Plaxico is like a brother to me."

Joey Porter loves to talk about anything and everything. Porter has an opinion on the whole Plaxico Burress situation and he shared his opinion with ESPN.
"Plaxico is like a brother to me. I take it real personal how he's being treated," Porter said. "Everybody has their mistakes, but that's exactly what they are ... Until you've been in that situation, when you've been robbed at gunpoint or you've had a gun waved in your face or had your house broken into before or been carjacked, you really don't know what it's like."

"For a person to carry a gun, I mean, you're not carrying a gun to show that 'I'm tough.' It's safety, it's nothing but safety," Porter said.
Bull shit Peezy! You don't go to a Manhattan club decked out in gold and diamonds when it's "nothing but safety."

And yes, "everybody has their mistakes." But to shoot a gun in a club is not the kind-of mistake I've ever made. Plaxico is very lucky that nobody (other than him) got hurt. Imagine if the gun was pointed at a different angle? In a crowded club?
"The real issue to me, is when the players feel they're unsafe, they shouldn't be there," Goodell said. "So get out, don't be there. If you feel the need to have a firearm to be someplace, you're in the wrong place."
I couldn't agree with Goodell any more.

A look at the AFC playoff picture

With a month remaining on the NFL schedule, it's do-or-die time for several AFC teams. For others, this month will be an opportunity to jockey for playoff positioning.

Here are the current AFC standings:
1. Tennessee Titans (11-1)
2. Pittsbugh Steelers (9-3)
3. New York Jets (8-4)
4. Denver Broncos (7-5)
5. Indianapolis Colts (8-4)
6. Baltimore Ravens (8-4)
Let's take a look at every AFC team by division. Team records are in parenthesis.

AFC East:

New York Jets (8-4): The Jets would have the 3 seed if the season ended today, but play in the tightest division and just lost to the team that would be the 4 seed. The Jets have an easy (relative to Steelers, Dolphins and Pats) remaining schedule with road games in San Francisco and Seattle and home games against Buffalo and Miami.

New England Patriots (7-5): The Patriots have suffered season-ending injuries to Adalius Thomas, Rodney Harrison, Laurence Maroney and, of course, Tom Brady. Matt Cassel has filled in admirably and has essentially written himself a huge lottery ticket as he enters free agency in the off-season. The Pats play 3 of their remaining 4 on the road. If they make the playoffs, it's most likely as the #6 seed.

Miami Dolphins (7-5): The 'Fins trail the Colts and Ravens by 1 game and are tied with the Patriots in the playoff race. What a turnaround for a team that finished 1-15, has a first-year coach (Tony Sparano) and lost their best player (Jason Taylor). Like the Pats, they finish up with 3 of 4 road games.

Buffalo Bills (6-6): Despite their strong 5-1 start, the Bills will need a miracle to make Donte Whitner's playoff guarantee come true. However, history hasn't been kind to this franchise when it comes to miracles.

Greg Camarillo out for season

Aside from losing the Patriots 48-28, the Dolphins suffered another big loss losing WR Greg Camarillo for the remainder of the season.
“You don’t want to lose a player like that,” Sparano said. “He’s been really productive for us. To me, the guy’s been exactly what you’re looking for on your football team. I’m disappointed for him. I know how important it is for him.”
Camarillo was leading the team in both receptions (55) and receiving yards (613). He's also been the team's most consistent receiver - he has 2+ catches in every game and only fewer than 4 catches twice.

Matt Light and Channing Crowder fight to be reviewed by NFL

Although I use the term loosely, the "fight" yesterday between Matt Light and Channing Crowder is going to be reviewed by the NFL. The fight happened on a Patriots field-goal. It was enough to get both players ejected from the game and may lead to additional discipline.
"I had no idea what was going on," Gostkowski said. "I was just worried about them falling on my leg. I didn't want to get hurt from something like that."
I understand that tempers flare and adrenaline is flowing during the heat of battle. But you got to maintain your composure.
"These guys are competitors," Sparano said. "At the same time, there's a right and a wrong way to do things. We have a standard here right now that we're trying to put in place. And for 10 solid games we've done that. Yesterday, we kind of got off the path a little bit for about eight minutes and that's not good enough. It has to be addressed."
The Patriots are now 1 game behind the Jets and the Dolphins are tied with the Bills and 2 games back.

Joey Porter vs Patriots Round 2

Both the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins trail the New York Jets by 1 game in the tight AFC East race and have a one game lead over the Buffalo Bills. This weekend, the Dolphins will host the Patriots.
"My message to the players is that if you walk through the door on Wednesday and your heart's not racing a million miles an hour, then you don't have a pulse," Sparano said, according to AP. "This is why we do what we do. We put ourselves in position to have a big game at home at the end of November. That's where we are. That being said, I don't think too much has to be said this week."
Maybe so Tony, but Joey Porter will do some talking. Here's what he said today:
"We don't like them," Porter said, according to The Associated Press. "They don't like us."

"They let us know how they feel about us," Porter said, according to AP. "Then they start punting over our heads -- like, you want the whole 100-yard field? You don't do that."
Porter did some talking in week 3 (let me clarify since he talks every week...he did some talking to the Pats) and the Dolphins won 31-13.

Straight A's on mid-year review for rookie head coaches

Both the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins have first-year head coaches in John Harbaugh and Jim Zorn. While they are doing better than I expected, I expected the other two first-year head coaches to really struggle and need a lot of time to turnaround their organizations.

I was wrong. Tony Sparano, head coach of the Miami Dolphins, is 4-4 and Mike Smith, head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, is 5-3 heading into week 10.

Tony Sparano was brought to Miami from the Dallas Cowboys by Bill Parcells. And you can argue that the Tuna is the "coach," but Sparano has the respect of the Dolphins players. The Dolphins are 4-4 and a game out of first in the ultra-tight AFC East race. If they didn't give up a touchdown with 3 seconds to go in the Texans game, they would be in a 4-way tie for first.

In this copycat league, other teams are copying the Dolphins and employing some form of the "Wildcat" offense that the Dolphins successfully used to shock the Pats. The way that Sparano's presence is felt is where it is not. The Dallas Cowboys offensive line, led by several Pro-Bowlers and Sparano last year, look awful in 2008 without Sparano to keep them focused.

Mike Smith inherited a mess. Last year's coach, Bobby Petrino quit 13 games into the season like a coward. Mike Vick was sent to prison for his involvement in the dog-fighting scandal. Although the Falcons had more wins (4) than the Dolphins (1) did in 2007, you could argue that the Falcons were a worse team.

Fast forward a season and Smith has a rookie QB (Matt Ryan) playing like a poised veteran and Michael "The Burner" Turner, a first-time, every-week starter at RB. Ryan has only thrown 5 INTs in 8 games. Turner is averaging almost 100 yards rushing per game. Roddy White has picked up where he left off last year. In the past 6 games, he's had at least 5 receptions every week and 4 100-yard receiving games.

Here are the current standings through week 10:

-- Jim Zorn, Washington Redskins (6-3, 2nd place in the NFC East)
-- John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens (5-3, 2nd place in the AFC North)
-- Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons (5-3, 3rd place in the NFC South)
-- Tony Sparano, Miami Dolphins (4-4, 4th place in the AFC East)

Joey Porter still talking

Love him or hate him, Joey Porter keeps things interesting. Porter is never short on words and opinions. He said this (and I agree) about Matt Jones:
"If I knew the answers, I'd still have 20 more thousand dollars," said Porter, who was fined $20,000 last month for criticizing referee Ed Hochuli after a loss to Houston. "But I'm still trying to figure out how a guy gets caught with cocaine in his car and still plays the game and nothing happens.

"He got caught with cocaine and Matt Jones is still playing football. How does he get away with that? And then you fine people $20,000 for making comments to the media about the refs. The guy got caught with cocaine."
Granted Matt Jones was suspended 3 games by the NFL. However, he's appealed the suspension and is still playing.

And he responded to Brandon Marshall's comments about Porter being "soft" and having "popcorn muscles":
"Nope. I know Orville Redenbacher. I know popcorn," he said. "But I'm not worried about that. That game is over. I'm looking at Seattle. For him to still be on that, I did get in his head, obviously. He's wasting time. They have a game tomorrow. I'm worried about me. I left Denver three days ago."
Marshall should focus on the game at hand. They are on the road in a prime-time matchup against the Browns tomorrow night.

Joey Porter, Brandon Marshall still jawing

Joey Porter, never accused of needing to come out of his shell, was critical of Broncos WR Brandon Marshall after the Dolphins beat the Broncos 26-17.
“He’s one of those soft receivers, where he has to have the ball all the time. If he don’t get it, he’s going to mope and cry. He did it to himself,” Porter suggested.
Brandon Marshall is also someone who likes to talk. And here's what he had to say about Joey Porter, who leads the NFL in sacks.
“Yeah, Joey Porter’s one of them guys, when you got guys who talk a lot of trash, just want to talk about people or put people down, they have their own insecurities,” Marshall said. “And his insecurities I don’t know. But he’s definitely one of those guys who all those muscles are popcorn muscles. He’s soft.”

“You know, we hear stories floating around the league all the time about him as far (as being) in nightclubs dancing with his shirt off like a girl or in the playground getting beat up back in California,” Marshall said. “He’s one of those guys that no matter how big he is, he can still get knocked on his butt and he’s soft. He’s soft at heart and you can tell by the way he talks.
It doesn't really matter what people say off the field. It matters what happens on the field.

When honesty is not the best policy?

After all of the times that Ricky Williams has violated the NFL's substance abuse policy, I'm really surprised by some recent remarks that Williams has made.
Williams told The Miami Herald for Tuesday's editions that when players were given Friday off, "Automatically your mind, which is so constrained since training camp began ... says, 'I'm free, what can I do?' So there was definitely an urge," he said.

"I'd be lying if I said I'm never going to do it again after I'm done," he said. "I don't know. I don't spend much time thinking about it."
What good will come out of admitting any of this? Nothing.

Although he's not requesting it, I'm going to provide Ricky some free advice. Shut up. Don't talk.

Joey Porter says Cassel "shouldn't be that hard"

Porter doesn't learn from his own mistakes. Remember last year after starting 0-3, Porter said this "...Write it how you want to write it: we will win on Sunday.''

How did that work out? Raiders 35, Dolphins 17
"I just know he's not a Tom Brady," Porter said. "So if it's not Tom Brady, it shouldn't be that hard." (insert your own joke here)

Yet Porter said "It'll be good to go out there and get our first victory."

"You treat him like you treat a backup," Porter said. "How do you prepare for a backup? He don't get that many snaps, right? So you throw the kitchen sink at him. That's what we're going to do."

"He's a guy we'll prepare for, but that was his first start since high school," Porter said. "So you can take all the reps you want to. This is a totally different game, a totally different league. He's only had one start in the NFL. Take that for what it's worth. He won it, but if you compare him to Brady, there's no comparison.
Yes Joey, Cassel has only started 1 game in his career and won 1 game. The Dolphins have played 18 games since Porter has been in Miami and won 1 game.

AFC East Preview

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Prediction: 12-4 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: While the Patriots can't improve upon (and won't repeat) last year's 16-0 performance, Belichick & Co. are certainly more concerned with improving upon their 0-1 performance in the Super Bowl. Tom Brady and Randy Moss will have strong years in 2008 again, but I expect both to retreat from the record-setting levels they attained last year. The Giants showed the rest of this copy-cat league the blueprint for success against the Patriots: rush the passer. Last year, Tom Brady threw the 2nd most passes in the NFL behind Drew Brees. This season I expect the Patriots to establish a stronger running attack. Their offense will still put up points, but their biggest question mark is their secondary? The Jets and Bills will be better in 2008 and the Dolphins will be...well, the Dolphins, but the AFC East is still clearly the Patriots division.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Patriots could win 100 games in the decade by week 10 (their 9th game of season). They have the most victories this decade with 91.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 99-157 (.387)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (4): at San Diego, at Indianapolis, vs Pittsburgh, at Seattle

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 38 wins (12.7 per season)

NEW YORK JETS
Prediction: 9-7 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: The Jets did a lot in the off-season to improve their team, most notably add the NFL's all-time passing leader and last year's MVP runner-up Brett Favre. However, before the last-minute trade, the Jets improved themselves by adding projected starters All-Pro Alan Faneca and Damien Woody to the offensive line as well as Calvin Pace to LB corps. In the NFL Draft, the Jets added 2 athletic freaks with their first 2 picks: Vernon Gholston from Ohio State and Dustin Keller from Purdue. I expect the additions to the O-Line and the iconic QB will allow Thomas Jones to reverse his downward trend: 2005 (1335 yards, 4.3 ypc, 9 TDs) to 2006 (1210 yards, 4.1 ypc, 6 TDs) to 2007 (1119 yards, 3.6 ypc, 1 TD).

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Jets have alternated between 4 and 10 wins during the past 4 seasons. After winning 4 games last year, they are due for 10 wins this year, right?

Strength of Schedule: 2007 Opponents were 117-139 (.457)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs New England, at San Diego, at New England, at Tennessee, at Seattle

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 18 wins (6 per season)

BUFFALO BILLS
Prediction: 8-8 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: Donte Whitner has put the pressure on the Buffalo Bills with his guarantee: “Do I expect us to make the playoffs? I’m guaranteeing it.” Although the Bills have the potential to be even better, 8-8 is where I expect them to finish. Leodis McKelvin gives them a playmaker on special teams and in the defensive backfield. James Hardy is a big target that should take off pressure on Lee Evans and be very productive in the redzone. Marshawn Lynch is arguably one of the 10 best RBs in the NFL. At the time we went to press (always wanted to say that), however, Jason Peters, the Bills' Pro Bowl Left Tackle, still hasn't reported and his appearance is not imminent. In the deep AFC, the Bills will just fall short of making the post-season in 2008. But the good news is they are headed in the right direction...and I don't mean Toronto.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Bills haven't had a 100-reception WR since 2002 when Eric Mould caught 100 passes.

Strength of schedule: 2007 opponents were 115-141 (.449)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): vs Seattle, at Jacksonville, vs San Diego, at New England, vs New England

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 19 wins (6.3 per season)

MIAMI DOLPHINS
Prediction: 4-12 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: I have confidence that The Tuna will turn around the mess he inherited in Miami. He helped turn around the Cowboys organization by assembling a team that many consider to have the most talent in the NFL. On the other hand, the Dolphins (i.e., Parcells) traded away their best player (Jason Taylor) for two draft picks (2nd-rounder in 2009 and 6th-rounder in 2010). On offense, their starting QB will be Chad Pennington, who was waived by the Jets. Their RBs will be Ronnie Brown (injury question mark) and Ricky Williams (all-around question mark) although many believe Williams will have a big comeback year (haven't we heard that before?). Their best WR is Ted Ginn Jr., arguably the worst selection based on value in the 2007 NFL Draft, but he should provide more production in his sophomore season. Their O-Line will be better with #1 overall pick Jake Long, but the Dolphins are (at least) a year away before playoff possibilities can be discussed.

Interesting Stat/Fact: Although the 'Fins won only 1 game in 2007, they lost 3 points in 6 different games.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 119-137 (.465)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (4): at New England, vs San Diego, vs Seattle, vs New England

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 16 wins (5.3 per season)

Undefeated to Winless?

I was driving home from my "day job" yesterday when John Seibel from ESPN Radio's The Sports Bash predicted that on the silver anniversary of the last team to go undefeated that the '07 Fins would do the opposite - go winless.

Will it happen?  No way.  Are they the worst team in the NFL?  Don't think so.  Are the Fins any good? Not really. But they will win at least 1 game (my guess is about 5).

But it got me thinking. In this day and age of relative parity, could a team go winless? Or, for that matter, undefeated?

Unlike the MLB, there isn't as much separating a 12-4 team from a 4-12 team as one would think.   But isn't that what makes this league great?  A couple of off-season moves and a weaker schedule the following season allows a team to make a dramatic turn-around like the Saints did last year winning 7 more games than they did in '05.

If you look at last year's results, the worst team in the AFC North was Cleveland (4-12).  But 2 of the 4 teams they beat were playoff teams: Jets & Chiefs.  The Texans, worst in the AFC South (6-10), beat the Super Bowl Champs in week 16 and swept the series with JAX.  Not-to-mention the NFC South's worst-to-first trend the past several years.

There have been 7 teams in NFL history to go 1-15, but 15 games is the NFL record for most losses in a season.  In theory, for a team to go winless, they would have to be the worst team in modern-day football.  With the parity in the league, that's not gonna happen any time soon.
