The Weekly Blitz - Week 14

Each week I pick three NFL games against the spread (ATS). Here are my week 14 picks:

Chargers +3.5 (over Cowboys): With the obvious exception of the two unbeaten teams (Indianapolis and New Orleans), San Diego has the NFL's longest winning streak (7 games) in the NFL. The Chargers' offense is firing on all cylinders and is averaging 28.5 points per game (third-best in the NFL). During their seven-game winning streak, they have scored 30+ points five times and 20+ points in all seven games. And if you have to bet in a December game involving the Cowboys, which side would you want?

Falcons +10 (over Saints): I don't expect the Falcons to beat the Saints. However, as the Patriots did in their perfect regular-season two years ago, they played a lot of close games down the stretch. We are seeing that with the Saints lately. They needed overtime to beat the Redskins last week as four of their past six games have been decided by 10 points or less. Anything can happen in divisional matchups and giving double-digit points on the road is a little rich for my blood.

Eagles -1 (over Giants): The Giants got a much-needed victory over the Cowboys last week. With a 2-5 record in their past seven games, it would be premature to say that the Giants have turned things around. The Giants have allowed over 20 points in seven consecutive games and the Eagles get playmaker DeSean Jackson back this week. This season, the Giants are 1-6 ATS against opponents with a winning record.

Fantasy Football: Top 50 WRs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 wide receivers for week 13:

1. Randy Moss, Patriots (at Dolphins): In his first matchup against the Dolphins, who rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed (233 ypg), Moss had six receptions for 147 yards and one TD. On the season, Moss leads the NFL in receiving yards (992) and is only one behind the leaders in TD receptions (eight). After getting their ass whooped on prime-time TV, expect the Patriots, Tom Brady, Moss & Co. to come out swinging.

2. Andre Johnson, Texans (at Jaguars): Johnson is one of the league's most complete receivers and perhaps the most underrated. This week, Johnson gets a favorable matchup against the Jaguars, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to receivers this season. On the season, Johnson ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (945).

3. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals (vs Vikings): The Vikings have been without Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, for the past five games. On the season, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. My expectation is for QB Kurt Warner to return from his concussion as Fitzgerald had his worst game of the season with Matt Leinart as QB last week. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (nine) including four TDs in the last three games in which Warner has played.

4. Reggie Wayne, Colts (vs Titans): Wayne is second in receptions (79), second in receiving yards (987) and tied for first in touchdowns (nine) in the league. In addition to their improvements with Vince Young under center, the Titans have improved on the defensive side of the ball as they are healthier now. Only the Lions (27) have allowed more receiving touchdowns than the Titans (25) on the season. During their five-game winning streak, however, the Titans have allowed only the 18th-most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (at Cardinals): In three of his past six games, Rice has 136 receiving yards or more including a game with 201yards. With the exception of his game at Green Bay, Rice has had 89 yards or more in five of his past six. Favre and Rice have built chemistry quickly and they have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to receivers this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 40 RBs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 running backs for week 13:

1. Thomas Jones, Jets (at Bills): The first time that Jones faced the Bills this season, he rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and only the Raiders have allowed more rushing TDs than the Bills (16). Since the Jets want QB Mark Sanchez to air it out less and less (his attempts have gone from 35 to 30 to 21 to 17), Jones better bring his lunch-pail tonight.

2. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Colts): As well as Johnson has played in the past six weeks (125+ rushing yards every week), you can consider Johnson 1(a) -- not #2 -- in this week's rankings. During their five-game winning streak, Johnson has rushed for seven touchdowns. Although the Colts have a middle-of-the-pack run defense on the season, they've given up the 11th-most fantasy points to opposing RBs in the past three weeks.

3. DeAngelo Williams, Panthers (vs Buccaneers): DeAngelo has cooled off a bit with no touchdowns in the past three weeks and only one 100-yard game during that span. The first time that Williams faced the Buccaneers this season, he carried the ball 30 times for 152 yards and two scores. Expect more of the same against the league's third-worst rush defense.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (at Cardinals): The Cardinals were the league's top-ranked run defense earlier in the season, but they have dropped to 14th in the NFL against the run (108.6 ypg allowed). In four of the past five weeks, they have allowed an opposing running back to eclipse the century mark. Surprisingly, Peterson has only three 100-yard games on the season, but he is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (vs Texans): MJD has rushed for more rushing touchdowns (13) than any other running back. (Of course, none of those are as famous as the TD that he didn't score.) That said, Jones-Drew faces a Texans run defense that turned itself around after the first three weeks. In week 3, however, MJD rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Football: Top 25 QBs for Week 13

It's time to put up or shut up. If you haven't yet clinched a playoff berth in your fantasy league, it likely comes down to week 13 for you as most fantasy leagues start their playoffs in week 14.

And to paraphrase Bill Parcells, this is why you buy those cheat sheets, do those mock drafts, etc. -- to get into (and win in) the playoffs.

Here are my top 5 quarterbacks for week 13:

1. Peyton Manning, Colts (vs Titans): Manning is the only QB to average over 300 passing yards per game (310.5) and is second in passing touchdowns (24). While the Titans and their defense have been playing better lately, they have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns (25) this season.

2. Brett Favre, Vikings (at Cardinals): In his past four games, Favre has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, Arizona allows the fourth-most passing yards (258.3 ypg).

3. Drew Brees, Saints (at Redskins): Brees is coming off a five-TD performance against the Patriots in what was arguably the most important regular-season game in team history. Although this week's opponent (Washington) allows the fewest passing yards in the NFL (170.4 ypg), Brees and the Saints offense are firing on all cylinders right now.

4. Tom Brady, Patriots (at Dolphins): Brady failed to connect on a TD pass last week, but he had 332 passing yards against the Dolphins in their first match-up. With targets like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it's not likely that Brady goes TD-less in back-to-back games.

5. Philip Rivers, Chargers (at Chiefs): Rivers has posted three consecutive 100+ QB ratings and this week he faces the Browns, who have allowed the ninth-most passing yards (233.4 ypg) this season. In the past four games, Rivers has thrown eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Fantasy Football: RB Sit'em for Week 13

If you need a victory in week 13 to send you into your fantasy league's playoffs, here are three running backs that I don't expect to deliver:

Kevin Smith, Lions (vs Bengals): The good news for Kevin Smith fantasy owners is that he's been a factor in the Lions' passing game. Only four RBs have more receiving yards than Smith (367). The bad news is he's a "running" back and he (and the Lions) haven't run the ball effectively this season. Smith is averaging only 54.8 rushing yards per game and has only three rushing touchdowns this season. Meanwhile, the Bengals have allowed the third-fewest rushing yards (784) and is tied for the fewest rushing touchdowns (two) allowed this season. And in the past three weeks, no team has allowed fewer fantasy points to opposing running backs than the Bengals.

Brandon Jacobs, Giants (vs Cowboys): With colder weather and tougher opponents on the horizon, Jacobs was poised to come through for fantasy owners with a bigger workload and, in turn, greater fantasy production. Right? Apparently not. Jacobs still hasn't rushed for 100 yards in any game and he's averaging one touchdown per 58 rushing attempts this year. On the season, the Cowboys have allowed the seventh-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs and only the Packers and Bengals have allowed fewer rushing touchdowns than the Cowboys have.

Ryan Grant, Packers (vs Ravens): Compared with the other two running backs on this list, Grant is having the best season (890 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns). When facing defenses that rank in the top 10 of fewest fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs, here's Grant's production: CIN (10 points), MIN (10 points), MIN (5 points) and DAL (7 points). In those four games, he's averaged only 51.5 rushing yards per game. This week, Grant faces a Ravens' run defense that currently allows a league low 3.5 yards per carry. Another single-digit fantasy game is the most likely scenario for Grant.

Giants place Antonio Pierce on IR

Today the Giants have placed middle linebacker Antonio Pierce on injured reserve (IR) with a bulging disk in his neck.

It’s crazy because I feel great,” Pierce said on WFAN (via the NY Daily News), before the Giants’ decision was announced. “And that’s honest. The only reason I went and got MRI done anyway is just because the trainers wanted to have something on record as far as just making sure you’re OK, because when a player gets a burner or a stinger you just want to get a check up on it. That’s where I thought we were. That’s where the Giants thought we were.

“But obviously it turned out to be something different, something that still doesn’t bother me. But when the MRI says one thing and the doctors say ‘This is what happens if you do play,’ you’ve got to listen to them.”

As Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News points out, Pierce, 31, will earn $4.75 million in the final year of his contract in 2010. However, the Giants may release him and look for help in free agency.

Chase Blackburn has started while Pierce has been out for the past two games and it's likely that Jonathan Goff will see an increase in playing time.

Eli has a stress reaction in his foot

Things have gone from bad to worse for Eli Manning and the New York Giants.

Manning, who had been playing with plantar fasciitis, has developed a stress reaction in his right foot, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. And if the stress reaction could turn into a stress fracture, which would end his season.

In his past six games, Manning has struggled more often than he has not.

He posted solid back-to-back performances against San Diego and Atlanta. But in his other four games during that span, he has thrown only three touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Giants, who started 5-0, are now 6-5 and fighting for their playoff lives as their remaining schedule is challenging with their next three games against their division rivals.

From a fantasy perspective, Manning's opponents from week 13 to 16 (championship game in most leagues) are as follows (pass defense rankings in parenthesis): Dallas (19th), Philadelphia (9th), Washington (1st) and Carolina (5th).

Strahan gives Giants impromptu pep talk

As one of the two last teams to have their bye, the New York Giants moved up in the NFC East standings last week as both the Cowboys and Eagles lost.

This week, the Giants host the Atlanta Falcons, who will almost definitely be without running back Michael "The Burner" Turner.

After yesterday's practice, former Giant defensive end Michael Strahan delivered an impromptu pep talk, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

"He said just 'Trust in each other. Teamwork is in huge,'" said linebacker Danny Clark. "He said, 'That's why this team has been so successful for so long. This is a team.' And he knows something about that."

The bye week came at the perfect time for the Giants, who have lost their last four games.

With an extra week to prepare for the Falcons and the slight momentum change in week 10, I expect the Giants to right the ship in week 11 whether they had a pep talk from Strahan or not.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 9

Every week, I pick three games against the spread (ATS) and I am coming off my second 3-0 week in the past three weeks.

My record on the season is now 14-10, which is solid, but still worse than last season's record of 63.3% correct ATS, which I use as my personal benchmark.

That said, here are my week 9 picks:

Panthers +13 (over Saints): Call me crazy -- after all, I've certainly been called worse -- for picking the Panthers here. But we are seeing a re-emergence of the Panthers' rushing attack and Delhomme, well, hasn't screwed that up allowing the Panthers to win three of their past four. In the past four games, DeAngelo Williams (439 rushing yards) and Jonathan Stewart (261) have combined for 700 rushing yards for an average of 5.0 yards per carry and seven touchdowns. In this series, the road team is not only 13-1 against the spread (ATS) since 2001, but they are 11-4 straight up. While I don't expect the Panthers, who were the # 2 seed in the NFC last year, to pull off a huge upset, I expect them to keep it close -- or, at least, within 13 points.

Eagles -3 (over Cowboys): First, I am rooting to be wrong here (as a Cowboys' fan). But I am realistic. At the beginning of the season, I predicted the Eagles to win the NFC East and for the Cowboys to finish third. But the point spread indicates that these two teams are "even" as the home team generally receives three points for playing at home. Meanwhile, the Eagles pummeled the New York Football Giants last week and are firing on all cylinders. The Cowboys, specifically Tony Romo, have limited the mistakes, which has been key to their three-game winning streak. For the first time in his career, Romo has gone interception-less for three consecutive games. Of all the teams Romo has faced at least twice, the Eagles are the only team to force Romo into more interceptions (eight) than touchdowns thrown (seven). But the Eagles are 16-9 straight up and 16-7 ATS versus the Cowboys since 1996.

Chargers +4.5 (over Giants): Philip Rivers is a better quarterback than Eli Manning. Period. And the difference couldn't be any more apparent in the past four weeks. Although Rivers has faced defenses like Pittsburgh's, Denver's and Oakland's (who has Nnamdi Asomugha, arguably the league's top corner), Rivers hasn't had a passer rating lower than 93.6 in any of his past four games. During that span, Rivers has thrown for 261.3 yards per game, completed 60.5 percent of passes and thrown eight touchdowns and only one interception. Eli, on the other hand, has thrown for 204 ypg, completed 52.1% of passes and has thrown more INTs (6) than TDs (5). I expect the Chargers to take advantage of the Giants' depleted secondary. The Giants may end their three-game skid, but the Chargers will, at a minimum, keep this game close.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 7

Every week, I pick three games against the spread (ATS) and last week was a good week (3-0 ATS). That improves my 2009 record to 10-8 although it pales in comparison to last year's record (31-18-2 ATS).

I like the matchups this week more than I have in previous weeks and here are my week 7 picks:

Steelers -5 (over Vikings): The Steelers haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 24 straight games and their run defense ranks second in the NFL. The Vikings are tied for the NFL lead in sacks (21). Although both teams are known for their great defenses, this game features the leader in passing yards (Ben Roethlisberger), rushing yards (Adrian Peterson) and receiving yards (Hines Ward) through six weeks. The Vikings are tied for second in turnover differential (+8) and Brett Favre has only two interceptions. For a QB that has averaged 1.12 INT's/game throughout his illustrious yet lengthy career, however, a regression to the mean is long overdue. Take the Steelers and give the points.

Falcons +4 (over Cowboys): The rule of thumb is that home-field advantage equates to three points. Therefore, this spread implies that the Cowboys are better (albeit by one point, but better nonetheless) than the Falcons on a neutral field. Really? As a Cowboys' fan, I'd like to believe that. But I can't. The Cowboys are coming off a bye and have had an extra week to prepare, which makes it an uphill battle for the Falcons. That being said, the Cowboys, who have a -4 turnover differential, tend to shoot themselves in the foot. Atlanta's turnover differential is +5. Although defense isn't Atlanta's strength, they rank fourth in the NFL in scoring defense (15.4 ppg) and haven't given up more than 26 points in any game this season. If the Falcons don't win this game outright, they should at least keep this game close.

Giants -7 (over Cardinals): Not only are the Cardinals one-dimensional on offense (5th in passing, 31st in rushing), they are one-dimensional on defense as well. They lead the NFL in rushing defense (59.6 ypg) and have held Maurice Jones-Drew, Steve Slaton and Frank Gore to 66, 39 and 30 rushing yards, respectively. However, their pass defense has allowed 265.2 passing yards per game, which is worse than every team except Tennessee. On the other hand, the Giants are more balanced with the following rankings: rush offense (5), pass offense (12), run defense (18) and pass defense (1). After an embarrassing loss to New Orleans, the Giants will come out swinging after last week's "Big Queasy" performance. In the past three years, the Giants are 5-0 against the spread (ATS) in games versus NFC West opponents.

Fantasy Studs - Week 5 Running Backs

Heading into week five, here are some running backs that I expect to have a big week:

Rashard Mendenhall, Steelers: What a difference a week made! Mendenhall, who was relegated to special teams duties in week 3, was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week in week 4. With Willie Parker out against the Chargers last week, Mendenhall finished with 165 rushing yards and two scores on 29 carries. While it may interesting to see how coach Mike Tomlin splits carries between Mendenhall and Parker going forward, we won't find out this week as Parker has been ruled out for the game against Detroit. The Steelers should run all over the Lions this week and Mendenhall owners should expect to see the second-year back get a heavy dose of touches. The Lions are allowing 5.2 rushing yards per attempt and 121.3 yards per game (20th in NFL).

Jerome Harrison, Browns: With James Davis and Jamal Lewis out last week, Harrison had 29 carries against the Bengals and finished with 121 yards. Davis is out for the season and Lewis is questionable for week five against the Bills. The Bills have one of the league's worst rushing defenses allowing 150.5 yards per game. Only five teams have allowed more rushing yards per game. Also, the Bills have allowed seven rushing touchdowns, which ranks them 30th in the league.

Ahmad Bradshaw, Giants: Through four weeks, Bradshaw, who is back-up to Brandon Jacobs, is 13th in the NFL in rushing yards (265) and he's averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Both Jacobs and Bradshaw are likely to have a huge week against an Oakland Raiders rush defense that is allowing 146.3 yards per game, which is 26th in the league. The Giants are two-touchdown-plus favorites over the Raiders. If they establish an early lead, as expected, both backs should see plenty of carries. In addition, Eli Manning has plantar fasciitis. Although he's expected to play, it wouldn't surprise me if they try to protect him as much as possible and focus on the running game instead. Surprisingly, the Giants have only one rushing touchdown in 139 attempts this season. Only the Rams, Bills and Chiefs have less (i.e. zero). Their fortunes are about to change this week.

Knowshon Moreno, Broncos: Moreno, who was the first RB drafted this year, is off to a solid start and ranked 16th in the NFL in rushing (249 yards). Teammate Correll Buckhalter, who ranks 12th in the league in rushing, is out for the Patriots game. Moreno, who has averaged over 17 carries per game over his past three games, should expect to see an increase in workload with Buckhalter out. Although the Patriots have a solid run defense, Moreno's increased workload makes him a solid play this week.

Giants lose Boley for a month

The Giants host the Raiders this Sunday. What do they share in common?

Both teams have a player who went under the knife today to repair a torn meniscus and will miss up to a month. For the Raiders, that player is second-year running back Darren McFadden.

Per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News, Giants weak-side linebacker Michael Boley had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee this morning and he will miss four weeks.

This was Boley's second surgery in the past four months. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip in June.

Given a four-week timetable, Boley could return as soon as November 8th against the Chargers. As Vacchiano points out, however, Boley will more likely return after the team's bye on November 15th and play against the Falcons on November 22nd.

Eli Manning suffers injury to heel, not Achilles

Giants QB Eli Manning suffered an injury to his heel on a non-contact play during the Chiefs' game.

"Any time you feel that kind of a little pull or strain, especially down there, you get nervous, you don't know if it's an Achilles or something,'' Manning said (via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post). "It wasn't that. I kind of knew after a second it wasn't that. I could stand up, I could still walk around and put some pressure on it. I was more relieved after that.''

Manning has started 75 regular-season games and 82 games straight including post-season games.

"We're going to have to see tomorrow,'' Manning said. "I think it's just a bruised heel, I don’t know exactly what it is. I can walk around, I can move around but there is some discomfort. I don't think it's awful, I've been injured worse before. See how it feels throughout the week. A lot will be when you wake up in the morning, the first step how it feels.''

In today's game, Manning completed 20 of 34 passes for 292 yards, three touchdowns and one interception as the Giants improved to a 4-0 start. Next week, the Giants play the Raiders.

Texans spank Raiders, it's the Giants turn next

Someone forgot to tell the Texans defense that they suck against the run.

They entered today's game against the Raiders as the league's worst rushing defense by all accounts. Through three games, they allowed 205 rushing yards per game, 6.2 rushing yards per attempt and gave up eight rushing touchdowns.

Certainly a defense that is as friendly as the Texans' defense had been would mean the Raiders' rushers would be able to capitalize. Right?

Wrong.

The Raiders know fully how much they suck.

Darren McFadden, who only has two career games with 50+ rushing yards, was held to -3 yards (that's not a misprint -- he had MINUS 3 yards) on six carries. Michael Bush, the team's back-up rusher, had 10 yards on three carries. The team's leader was Justin Fargas, who had 24 yards on 10 carries.

As a team, the Raiders had only 45 rushing yards, 20 of which came from receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

As usual, the Raiders passing offense wasn't much better. JaMarcus Russell completed only 12 of 33 passes for 128 yards. That being said, he did set his season-high in passer rating (48.5) in a game.

Life won't get any easier for the Raiders' offense next week as they face a team (NY Giants) that is actually good defensively.

Fantasy Studs - Week 4 Running Backs

Heading into week four, here are some running backs that I expect to have a big week:

Brandon Jacobs/Ahmad Bradshaw, Giants: I expected Ahmad Bradshaw to have a strong year. With the departure of Derrick Ward (via free agency to Tampa), Bradshaw was elevated into Ward's role as Jacobs' primary back-up. However, I didn't expect him to lead the team in rushing as he does through three games.

On 35 carries, Bradshaw has 201 rushing yards for a 5.7 average. Jacobs, on the other hand, is averaging only 3.4 yards per carry (58 attempts for 196 yards). Last year, Jacobs got into the endzone 15 times in 219 carries and 13 games. That was a TD-per-14.6-carries pace last year. This year, he's scored once in his 58 attempts.

Last week against the Bucs, the duo had their best game of the season -- 196 rushing yards between the two of them on 40 carries. Against the Chiefs today, it could be deja vu all over again as the Giants should establish an early lead and be playing from ahead all day today. I expect both backs to get a heavy does of carries and Jacobs to have his breakout game of the season.

Cedric Benson, Bengals: The Browns defense has allowed 184.3 rushing yards per game (30th in NFL) and eight rushing touchdowns (tied for worst in league) through three games. Benson, on the other hand, has picked up where he left off in 2008. In the final three games of 2008, Benson rushed for 355 yards including a whopping 171 against the Browns in week 16.

In the first three games this year, Benson has had 76+ rushing yards in every game including last week against the Steelers, is third in the NFL in rushing (293 yards) and averaging just under 100 yards per game (97.7). It doesn't get any easier than this.

Glen Coffee, 49ers: Coffee will start in place of the injured Frank Gore, who will miss at least the next three weeks. Although Coffee's averaging only 1.8 yards per carry, he faces a less intimidating run defense in week 4 (St. Louis) than he did in week 3 (Minnesota). Coach Mike Singletary and offensive coordinator employ a run-first offense and Coffee should expect a heavy dose of carries in week 4.

Darren McFadden, Raiders: One of the most electrifying players in college football, McFadden has been disappointing in this young NFL career. He's had only two games with over 50 yards rushing in his career. Although he tops the Raiders' depth chart this season, McFadden is averaging only 3.6 yards per carry. Thirty other running backs have outrushed McFadden, who has 148 yards, so far this season.

If McFadden is going to have a big week, this is the week. The Texans are last in the league in rushing defense (205 yards per game and eight touchdowns). They are allowing 6.2 yards per carry.

Kenny Phillips out for year, maybe longer

The New York Giants lost safety Kenny Phillips for the season after placing him on injured reserve (IR) today, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

"I really feel for Kenny because he had worked so hard during the offseason to prepare himself for the '09 season," Giants GM Jerry Reese said, according to Vacchiano. "He had a great camp and was just beginning to come into his own and showed flashes of being one of the premier safeties in the NFL. We expect him to recover from this setback and come back stronger than ever. This league is about making adjustments and we will do that."

The Giants claimed Aaron Rouse off waivers from Green Bay, who drafted Rouse in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft.

Both C.C. Brown and Michael Johnson were the only other active safeties on the Giants' roster and Brown will take over Phillips' spot in the starting lineup.

Phillips, the Giants first-round pick in 2008, is leading the team in tackles (13) and sacks (2).

With patellofemoral arthritis, Phillips could end up having microfracture surgery and Bob Glauber of Newsday lists some operative approaches to treat his situation (via Sinai Hospital's website).

Per Dr. Michael Kaplan (via Glauber), "It doesn't bode well for a football player to have this. It’s very unusual, and he may have had a traumatic injury where he got smashed in the kneecap. If it's severe enough to require microfracture surgery, it's a worrisome circumstance. It's not an overnight get-well situation, and the results are somewhat less predictable than ligament or cartilage tears."

In addition to losing Phillips for the year (or more), the Giants have been without cornerbacks Aaron Ross and Kevin Dockery for the first two games this season with hamstring injuries.

Hakeem Nicks to have MRI, X-rays negative

Giants rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks, who suffered a foot injury in today's game, will undergo an MRI on his foot. But the X-rays that were taken today were negative, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

It’s just a test that I’m going through right now with these little knick-knack injuries,” Nicks said. “Once I get past these injuries I’ll be all right.”

“I’m not going to say I’m worried about it because it’s out of my hands at this point,” he said. “It already happened. I can’t get down on myself about it.”

According to Vacchiano, the trainers said the injury to Nicks, who was the Giants first-round pick, was to both the top and bottom of his foot. Hopefully, this injury isn't of the Lis Franc variety, which would sideline Nicks for an extended period.

Nicks had two receptions for 11 yards in his debut.

2009 NFC East Prediction

Here are my predictions for the NFC East in 2009:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Prediction: 10-6 (Eagles Schedule | Eagles Forum)

The NFC East is the strongest division from top to bottom. Although the signing of Michael Vick may have dominated the headlines, the team made other off-season moves. They traded for left tackle Jason Peters and signed him to a long-term contract. They also drafted LeSean McCoy as Brian Westbrook's future replacement and receiver Jeremy Maclin, who will give Donovan McNabb another playmaker. However, the team still lacks a true No. 1 receiver, but minus the T.O. days, the Eagles may have their best receiving corps in the McNabb era. Then again, that isn't saying much. In such a physical and talented division, the question will be how their defense reacts to the losses of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson (who passed away), LB Stewart Bradley (season-ending injury) and safety Brian Dawkins (who was released).

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .535 winning percentage in 2008 (9th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Carolina, vs NY Giants, at San Diego, at Atlanta, at NY Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 27 (9.0 per season)

Links to all 32 NFL team final roster cuts

At 6 p.m. ET tonight, NFL teams were required to make their final cuts to reduce their roster from 75 players to 53 players.

Here are links to lists of cuts (or to the final 53-man roster) for all 32 NFL teams:

AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
AFC South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
AFC West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers

NFC East: Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins
NFC North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
NFC South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
NFC West: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams

I will add links to the Colts' and Jaguars' cuts and/or 53-man rosters once I find links to them. [Links updated above]

Are the Jets interested in Sinorice Moss?

The Jets have made their cuts to get down to their 53-man roster, which Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News lists here.

On the list are three receivers: Britt Davis and Marcus Henry were waived and Aundrae Allison was placed on Injured Reserve (IR).

Although the Giants kept receiver Sinorice Moss on the roster along with six other receivers, there are rumors that the Giants may be looking to trade a receiver. As Cimini points out, the Jets, who were interested in Moss out of college, might have some interest in making a play for Moss.

Moss, who was the Giants' second-round pick in 2006, was frustrated when he was hardly played against the Jets in week three. In their final pre-season game, Moss had two receptions for two scores.

In ten games last year, Moss had 12 receptions for 153 yards and two scores.

Giants cut David Tyree

The New York Giants have released the player that arguably made the greatest play in team and NFL history.

Per Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Giants have released wide receiver David Tyree.

"He's obviously disappointed, but we're confident someone else will see the value he brings on special teams and as a wide receiver," Michael Clouser, Tyree's agent, told Garafolo. " We'll see how things go here in the next few days."

Tyree, the Giants' sixth-round pick in 2003, spent all of last year on injured reserve. In 2007, he had only four receptions for 35 yards over 12 games.

Giants lose Jay Alford for the season

Giants defensive tackle and long snapper Jay Alford had season-ending surgery today and the Giants will place him on Injured Reserve tomorrow, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

I think Jay at first was down, because he really had a good spring and fall,” [Giants coach Tom] Coughlin said. “It’s a shame, a young guy that worked his tail off like that, to have his season taken away. At the same point it’s a learning experience. I’m hoping his morale comes back up, if you will. The challenge, obviously, as it is to all players that have to go through this, is in the rehab. I’m sure, based on the way he dedicated himself last winter, he’ll be very, very serious about his rehab work.”

Alford, the Giants third-round pick in 2007, tore his MCL and partially tore his ACL when the Giants played the Bears in a pre-season game on August 22nd.

Last year, Alford had 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

5 Fantasy Running Backs to target in your draft

As you already know, fantasy football leagues are not necessarily won by the genius who decides to select Adrian Peterson with the number one pick. Whether you have the third pick, the eighth pick or the tenth pick, everyone is getting top talent in the first round.

And if we take a quick look back to 2008, players such as Matt Forte, Deangelo Williams and Chris Johnson were drafted in the 10th round or later yet they put up first-round numbers.

While that may be the extreme, the key to winning your league is selecting players who are good values in relation to where they are drafted and to do so consistently throughout your draft.

So, here are some running backs to target from round 3 through the later rounds:

Kevin Smith, Lions – Last year was the year of the rookie RB. Three of them rushed for 1,000+ yards. One of the guys who flew under the radar and just fell shy of 1,000 yards was Kevin Smith of Detroit.

While Smith has a case of JonKitna-itis, predicting a Detroit Lions’ playoff berth in ’09, he just needs to do what he has done since November last year.

When given the chance in the second half, Smith produced and produced big. He rushed for 671 yards in the final 8 games. That is a 1,342-yard pace in an offense that had Dan “Safety Dance” Orlovsky running it.

Only 4 RBs had more than 1,342 yards in 2008.

With MegaTron -- that’s Calvin Johnson for those of you not well-versed in freakishly, athletic receiver nicknames -- entering his third season, a quarterback who's last name doesn't rhyme with jerkoff-ski and the addition of Brandon Pettigrew, the most-talented and best-blocking TE in the draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith continued his second-half pace into 2009, in which case Smith becomes the bargain of the third round of your draft.

Ryan Grant, Packers – Although he wasn’t 100% to start the season and didn’t crack 20 carries in the first five weeks of the year, Ryan Grant was one of only five backs to carry the ball 300+ times in 2008.

Despite some labeling him a “bust,” Grant finished strong and still rushed for 1203 yards. All four of the times he eclipsed the century mark came in the final ten games of the season.

With Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver in the passing game, opposing defenses need to be honest when trying to stop Grant and the Packers running attack.

Provided Grant stays healthy for the entire season, he should top his 2008 production of 1200+ yards.

Ray Rice, Ravens – If you read my blog post in early June -- ‘Four (Ravens’) Breakout Players for 2009’ -- over at FootBaltimore.com, putting Ray Rice on this list doesn’t surprise you.

In 2009, I expect the Ravens’ ground game to be the same as -- but different than -- it was in 2008. So, what does that mean?

Last year, the Ravens led the NFL in rushing attempts at 37 per game. I don’t expect that to change much. What will be different in 2009 is how the carries are allocated. Rice, who has been running (no pun intended) with the first team, should receive the most carries this year. Le’Ron McClain, last year’s leader with 232 carries, has moved to FB full-time to take over for the departed Lorenzo Neal.

While Willis McGahee had a strong camp, Rice has added both muscle and confidence in the off-season. And Coach John Harbaugh has been singing his praises saying that he has no doubt that Rice can be an “every-down back.”

Donald Brown, Colts – Brown, who was the nation’s leading rusher in college football and joins one of the most prolific offenses in the league. Brown carried the rock 28 times per game on average at UConn and rushed for 200+ yards three times and 150+ yards eight times.

With Joseph Addai already in Indy, Brown will be part of a platoon to start the season.

Worst-case scenario, Brown should get 10-12 carries per game and finish with around 700-800 yards.

Best-case scenario, (except from Addai’s perspective), it’s déjà vu all over again for Addai leading to huge upside for Brown.

Cedric Benson, Bengals – While I wouldn’t go for a boat ride with Bengals running back Cedric Benson, I’d certainly draft him after 30 or so running backs are off the board, which is what his Yahoo! ADP and ESPN rank would project.

Benson (and the Bengals for that matter) finished 2008 strong despite being the 32nd-ranked offense in the league last year. In the final three weeks of the season, Benson showed why the Bears drafted him fourth overall in 2005.

In those three games (all wins), Benson carried the ball 84 times for 355 yards and caught 5 passes for 107 yards. With Carson Palmer healthy (arm/shoulder, at least), Chad Ochocinco refocused and top rookie Andre Smith re-joining the offensive line (after his broken foot heals), there is no reason to believe that the Bengals will finish ranked last in offense again this year. And Benson should only benefit from those healthier, refocused and new components to the offense.

Some other RBs I like late in the draft: Felix Jones (Cowboys), Ahmad Bradshaw (Giants) and James Davis (Browns).

Osi skips practice without telling Coughlin

Giants defensive end Osi Umyeniora, who was at the team's facility today, left without talking to coach Tom Coughlin and he didn't practice today, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

Osi was here this morning earlier and there must have been something of a personal nature, left,” Coughlin said. “I haven’t personally talked to him. He did respond to Jerry, evidently by text. That’s all I have. I haven’t seen him so I can’t tell you. I can’t indicate to you what the reason was or anything, because I don’t know.”

The text to Reese was to inform him that Umyeniora was o.k., but he didn't provide a reason why he left, according to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger.

Per Vacchiano, it's not believed that Umyeniora left due to injury or contract concerns.

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger writes that Umyeniora was upset with new defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan for criticizing him for a mistake in Saturday's game.

Umyeniora, the Giants' second-round pick in 2003, missed the entire 2008 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury last August.

Stay tuned...

Hakeem Nicks has big night against Jets

In last night's pre-season game against the Jets, Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks, the team's first-round pick, put up big numbers against the Jets' third-team DBs.

Regardless of the level of competition, Nicks caught six passes for 144 yards and two scores (22 and 71 yards, respectively), which is impressive.

Mario Manningham was the team's only other receiver to have more than two catches for 25 yards last night. Manningham caught four passes for 41 yards.

Whether or not Nicks is named a starter, he's focused only on what he can control saying that he "can't control the depth chart. All I can do is keep on competing and we'll go from there."

"He made some plays," [coach] Tom Coughlin said. "He created opportunities for us to see him and his contributions and how we might be able to utilize him."

The team's most glaring weakness is receiver.

And, as Dan Graziano of FanHouse points out, if Nicks has a strong performance in the team's final pre-season game, he may help put an end to rumors about any interest the Giants may have in Broncos' disgruntled -- and suspended -- receiver Brandon Marshall.

Burress gets prison consultant

New York Giants Plaxico Burress Accidentally Shot Himself in the Leg

Facing sentencing on gun charges one month from today, ex-Giants receiver Plaxico Burress has hired a prison coach, according to the New York Post.

"We are consulting with an expert in the field who will address and advise us, Mr. Burress and his family, on what to expect while incarcerated, and how to use his period of confinement as productively as possible," attorney Benjamin Brafman said.

While Burress accepted a plea deal for a two-year jail term, he could get out of prison after 20 months (May 2011).

I'm not sure what is more distrubing: that Burress is hiring a prison consultant or that the profession exists in the first place.

That being said, Burress could have avoided the need for a prison coach had he hired a consutlant to tell him not to carry a loaded hangun into a New York City nightclub. Or to tell him not to hide his gun in his sweat pants.

Plaxico to spend two years in jail

Ex-Giants receiver Plaxico Burress will spend two years in jail, but he could get out in 20 months on good behavior, per Gary Myers of NY Daily News.

He will be sentenced on September 22nd and is expected to begin his jail term on the same day. Therefore, a 20-month sentence would get him out of prison in May 2011.

"I think he will get another chance. Our league is filled with second chances," one general manager told Myers Thursday. "It will be one of those opportunities where he will have to go prove he has something left. The odds will certainly be against him."

Meanwhile, league commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Burress, who can't sign with a team until completion of his jail sentence. Once released from prison, he will be reinstated.

"He was part of the family," [Giants co-owner John] Mara said, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News. "And I know a lot of our players are hurting right now because he was a friend to them. I hope it's a wake-up call to some of them. I hope they all learned a lesson that if you make a bad choice it can cost you a career and cost you having to go to prison."

Even before Burress shot himself in the leg, he was often disciplined (fined and even suspended) by the Giants. Plaxico had a history of making poor choices.

Now he has 20 months (at least) to think about them.

Plaxico facing (at least) eight-game suspension?

Plaxico Burress Indicted by Grand Jury on Multiple Charges

Former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who faces a minimum jail sentence of 3 1/2 years on gun charges, will be suspended for at least half of the season, according to a source of Gary Myers of the NY Daily News.

As Myers points out, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell isn't forced to make a decision on Burress, who is currently a "free agent" (and I use that term loosely). So, until a team expresses interest in signing Plaxico, the commissioner isn't likely to make a decision about his future.

But if a team is interested, Goodell could suspend Burress for the entire year.

And if Burress is suspended for all of 2009 and then faces jail time, which seems to be a certainty, he will likely have played his last NFL game.

Despite all the tweeting agent Drew Rosenhaus previously did about all the interested teams, there doesn't seem to be much/any interest in Burress, who is 32 years old, and that's not likely to change.

In his career, Burress caught 505 passes for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007.

Giants to make Eli Manning highest-paid player

DIRECTVs 3rd Annual Celebrity Beach Bowl - Inside

The New York Giants and their franchise QB Eli Manning, the MVP of Super Bowl XLII, have agreed to a seven-year contract that will make Manning the league's highest-paid player, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

Over the seven years, Manning will receive $106.9 million for a record-setting average of $15.27 million per season. The contract reportedly has $35 million of guaranteed money.

Manning, who was the top overall draft pick in the 2004 NFL draft, had one year remaining on his existing contract so the new deal is a six-year extension over the $9.4 million he was due to earn this season.

Although Manning made his first trip to the Pro Bowl last year and won the Super Bowl MVP the prior year, does he deserve to be the highest-paid player in the league? Or even his family?

Giants General Manager Jerry Reese does.

Sure he does,” Reese said today, according to Vacchiano. “He’s a franchise quarterback. He’s come in, he takes a lot of flak from you guys and he just keeps going. He does what we ask him to do on the field. He does what we ask him to do off the field. He’s a good football player.”

Statistically, Manning had his best year in 2008. He had a QB rating of 86.4, completed over 60 percent of his passes and threw 21 touchdowns while only throwing ten interceptions.

And Manning has been a winner getting the Giants to the post-season in four of his five seasons including the 2007 championship season.

However, without the weapons (no pun intended), he's just an average quarterback. Without Plaxico Burress in the final six games counting playoffs, Manning threw three touchdowns and five interceptions.

This type of contract should be given only to a special quarterback. Not one that is only good -- not great.

Plaxico indicted, Pierce not indicted

Former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress leaves court in NY

Ex-Giants receiver Plaxico Burress was indicted today on gun charges, which carry a minimum of sentence of 3 1/2 years.

Burress, who shot himself in the leg at Latin Quarter nightclub last November, faces two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment, per the NY Daily News.

Giants captain Antonio Pierce, who was with Burress that night and helped conceal the weapon, was not indicted.

"Antonio is gratified that the grand jury determined that the evidence did not support an indictment," Michael Bachner, Pierce's attorney, wrote to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger in an e-mail. "Once the grand jurors were able to hear Antonio, see him and understand the workings of his mind on that extraordinary evening, they concluded, as they should have, that the acted as any reasonable person would have."

The possibility of an indictment for Pierce threatened to create a significant distraction for the Giants, who opened training camp in Albany today. At a minimum, the Giants would have been barraged with questions from the media on the topic.

Now they can keep 100 percent of their focus on football.

As for the 31-year-old Burress, however, he will certainly face jail time in what should be an open-and-shut case even if he doesn't serve the full minimum of 3 1/2 years. And NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will almost certainly suspend Burress indefinitely even if the trial doesn't begin until after the season.

As Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News points out, this is very likely the end to the football career of Plaxico Burress.

Jacobs says he's "not of a fan of Tony Romo"

Don't count New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs among the many (albeit diminishing number of) Tony Romo fans.

Jacobs, who appeared on ESPN Radio 1050 in New York, said of the Cowboys quarterback (via Pro Football Talk):

"I don't think he's that good a passer, to be honest with you," Jacobs said.

"I'm not a fan of Tony Romo, no. Keep him in the pocket, he's not that good. . . . His luck will be gone sooner or later. If you were to keep Tony Romo in the pocket he's not that effective."

First off, I'm a Cowboys fan who's not a big Tony Romo fan. But ESPN posted the numbers on SportsCenter showing Romo's splits of passing from the pocket versus out of the pocket.

While I should have jotted them down when I saw them, his numbers are noticeably better when he's passing from the pocket than when he's passing outside the pocket.

That being said, if the Cowboys and Jerry Jones want to have a "Romo-friendly" offense in 2009, they should pound the ball with Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice.

Now that the trio of "Earth, Wind & Fire" have been broken up (Derrick Ward signed with the Bucs), the Cowboys arguably have the league's best trio of running backs.

NFL suspends Michael Boley for one game

The NFL has suspended Giants linebacker Michael Boley for one game without pay for violating the league's Personal Conduct Policy, per Ralph Vacchiano of NY Daily News.

Last year, Boley was arrested and charged with one count of domestic battery, which is a misdemeanor, after he shoving his wife Chantelle into the wall and kitchen cabinets.

Although the incident happened last May, the case didn't conclude in the legal system until November. Therefore, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell didn't begin reviewing the case until December.

Boley, who had a career-high 110 tackles two seasons ago, underwent surgery last week to repair a torn labrum in his hip and he's expected to need 8-10 weeks to recover.

Now Boley's status for the season opener is no longer in doubt.

Indefinite suspensions to come for Burress and Vick?

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports!, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is going to come down hard on ex-Giants receiver Plaxico Burress and ex-Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.

Per three sources, Cole writes, "Goodell is leaning toward indefinitely suspending" both players.

Vick, who was released from jail for dog-fighting conspiracy charges, will complete home confinement on July 20th while Burress faces a jail term for gun charges that carries a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years.

“[Vick] is not just walking out one day and playing again,” the source close to Vick said. “I don’t know if he understands that yet, but that’s what it looks like right now if you really pay attention. … Yeah, he served his time, but he has to prove himself. When the commissioner talks about wanting to see remorse, he’s not kidding.”

In the case (literally) of Burress, Goodell is frustrated by how slow the process is moving. Plaxico's case was adjourned (again) until September 23rd even though it seems as though it should be an open-and-closed case.

While Plaxico's agent Drew Rosenhaus keeps tweeting when new teams are "interested in Plaxico," I haven't heard a tweet when the teams that were rumored to be interested aren't any more.

For example, Bucs GM Mark Dominik has "no interest" in Plaxico, per Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times. In addition to the Bucs, the Jets and Bears were the initial three teams reported to be interested in Burress.

“The commissioner would rather have the prosecutors take some action before he does anything, but he’s prepared to do something regardless if he has to,” the league source told Yahoo! Sports.

Burress deserves an indefinite suspension. While Burress may have only (physically) hurt himself with the gunshot, he could have very easily shot someone else. After all, he didn't shoot himself on purpose.

Does Eli deserve to be the highest-paid player?

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is in the final year of his rookie contract.

And, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News, Manning's agents, who are in negotiations with the Giants, seek a deal that would "make him the highest-paid player" in the league. Both sides are far apart in their discussions, according to Vacchiano.

Vacchiano writes that, "most league sources think he’ll get an average of around $15 million per year (seven or eight years, $110-120 million with $40 million-plus in guarantees), which would make him right now the NFL’s highest-paid player (based on the average value)."

Manning says he's not concerned whether he's the highest-paid player or not. Instead, he's focusing on the job at hand.

"I'll leave it to my agent and the Giants," Manning said. "They'll figure out all the details. My job is to prepare, get this team ready and let everything else play itself out."

In general, Manning doesn't seem to get caught up in the superficial stuff. And (a part of) an agent's job is to maximize the size of a contract for the client.

But there is no way that Eli deserves to be the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Yeah, he led the Giants to a Super Bowl victory. In fact, his escape from a sack was nearly as remarkable as David Tyree's catch in their Super Bowl victory.

And Manning had his best statistical season of his career setting career marks in QB Rating (86.4), completion percentage (60.3%) and TD:INT ratio (21:10).

Yet he struggled down the stretch without the services of the gun-toting Plaxing Burress.

In the final four games of the regular season, Manning finished with a QB Rating of 69.8, completion percentage of 54.6 percent and 153.5 passing yards per game (career average is 200+ yards per game) with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Last year's numbers in the Giants' only post-season game were even worse - 15/29, 0 TD, 2 INT, 40.7 QB Rating.

There is no doubt that Manning is a franchise QB. But, on the hand, he is not the franchise QB (of all franchise QBs).

Plaxico's day in court

As expected, the court case of ex-Giants receiver Plaxico Burress was adjourned to September (23rd).

Bob Glauber of Newsday tweeted, "Burress was late to his hearing ... Surprise surprise ... Brafman said confusion on schedule and tunnel traffic ... Tom Coughlin is laughing."

Glauber also wrote that "Plax attorney Ben Brafman believes Burress will be eligible to play in 2009" since "Brafman believes NFL commish Roger Goodell will not punish Burress until some resolution of case."

It was a busy legal day for Plex.

In addition to his case being adjourned, Burress and the Giants reached a settlement for an undisclosed amount over Plaxico's grievance on the four weeks of lost salary for his end-of-season suspension as well as the fine of one week's pay he incurred, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

So, if Brafman is right and Plex won't be suspended until there is a "resolution" of the case, what's next for Burress?

The three teams reported to be interested in Plaxico were (are) the Jets, Bears and Bucs.

"Now that the legal process is on hold, we are hoping to have a deal in place with a team for Plex before training camps start," [agent Drew] Rosenhaus tweeted.

In fact, Rosenhaus also tweeted, "A new team called me today to express interest in Plex. I expected the interest level in Plex to heat up after today's development and it has."

Perhaps, new teams are interested. Or, perhaps Rosenhaus is bluffing to create a sense of urgency for the other three teams.

Yet Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger writes that he's "hearing that the Jets feel that their collective group of wide receivers are good enough to get the job done."

Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News echoes Hutchinson's sentiment, writing "the Jets...no longer are as interested as they once were."

So, the game of chicken between NFL front offices and Drew Rosenhaus begins...

Plaxico Burress case adjourned until September?

Free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress will have his court case adjourned until September, per Gary Myers of the NY Daily News.

"As far as I'm concerned, if he wants to play this year, he's able to play," [Plaxico's attorney Benjamin] Brafman said. "We will be in and out of the court of Monday morning by 9:15."

However, it may not be up to Brafman and/or Burress. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will likely suspend Burress if he's not spending the 2009 season in jail.

Three teams (Jets, Bucs and Bears) have expressed interest in Burress.

Brandon Jacobs to be boxing promoter

New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, who was an amateur boxer as a youth, is getting into the business side of boxing, per Tim Smith of the NY Daily News.

"I've been wanting to get into the business after I was done playing," Jacobs said. "If I didn't fight, I wanted to get into the promotion business, but I hear from people that's a lot of headaches. So I wanted to do something that was more personable with the fighters."

"I'd love to play in the Super Bowl and then I'd love to fight for a (boxing) title the next day," Jacobs said.

Jacobs was introduced to Pat Lynch, who managed Arturo Gatti, and Lynch and Jacobs are working on a deal to co-promote Steven Martinez, who is a three-time Golden Gloves champion.

"I went out to lunch with Brandon the other day and he's just a great guy," Lynch said. "He said he wanted to get into the boxing business after football. But he's decided that he wants to get his feet wet now. That's great."

Perhaps, if the deal to co-promote Martinez falls through, Jacobs can promote a fight between Rex Ryan and Channing Crowder.

Mini-tweet battle brewing in the Meadowlands

As Ethan Skolnick of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel points out, New York Jets safety Kerry Rhodes has tweeted his prediction for the upcoming season.

"we will b the best defense in the league this year!!! i feel for the offenses we are gonna face"

However, linebacker Antonio Pierce, who also calls the Meadowlands home but for the Giants, responded to Rhodes' tweet in an non-strategic use of 140 characters...

"Also if you hear anyone say we are the best this or that. They are crazy we havent played a game nor do we know who will be on the final ros"

Now if we could only get a fake Ben Roethlisberger tweeting how they are going to light these defenses up...

Chris Canty is "excited" to be a Giant

New York Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty, who can play both end and tackle, is excited about the opportunity to play for a "tremendous" team, defense and defensive line. To borrow a phrase from T.O.'s former publicist, Canty has 42 million reasons to be "excited."

Early in free agency, the Giants signed Canty to a six-year, $42 million contract with $17.25 million guaranteed. The Cowboys never made a serious offer to retain his services.

Even though Canty brings versatility to the defensive line, he has added weight (315-320 pound range) and will be mostly used as tackle in the Giants' 4-3 defense.

"It feels good," Canty said in a telephone interview with Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I put on my jersey, and it’s the same 99. Different jersey, a little different football team, different team atmosphere, but it’s very exciting, and I’m happy to be a part of it."

"Obviously, there’s an opportunity to be part of a tremendous team, a tremendous defense and particularly the defensive line," Canty said. " ... When you have those kind of guys on your front, you give yourself an opportunity to be successful. They really can’t key in on one particular player. So that was something that was definitely attractive for me."

"I’m just excited to be a part of the Giants. It’s a football team that really wanted me to come up here and be a part of it."

Canty, who was one of the Cowboys' two fourth-round picks in 2005, has started 50 of his 64 career games and has 148 career tackles to go with 10 career sacks. The other fourth-rounder was Marion Barber. The Cowboys also drafted DeMarcus Ware (first round) and Jay Ratliff (seventh round) that year.

Ramses Barden, "natural-born athlete"?

New York Giants rookie receiver Ramses Barden is a "natural-born athlete" according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.
"The day he was born, when the doctor handed him to the nurse, they put him on his stomach and he was yelling and yelling. He didn't like that a little bit," Al Barden said last week from his home in Altadena, Calif. "The next thing I know, he was on his back. I looked at the nurse, she looked at me and I said, 'Did he just do what I think he did?' She said, 'I think so because I didn't do it.' "He turned over by himself. This happened."
As a big target (6-foot-6 and 229 pounds) like Plaxico Burress, the difference is you don't have to worry "where Ramses was the night before a game," as his college coach Rich Ellerson said.

Barden's father Al wanted him to be a basketball player and Ramses started on an AAU team that included Lakers' Jordan Farmar, the Celtics' Gabe Pruitt, the Pistons' Amir Johnson and UCLA's Josh Shipp.

In fact, Barden was allowed to play football, because his father thought it would toughen him up for basketball.

Instead, Barden went on to become one of only three I-AA players to catch 50+ touchdowns in a college career.
"At Cal Poly we were a bunch of nerds. But we were going to be nerds who kicked your butt and corrected your homework," said Ellerson, who left the school in December to become the head coach at Army. "We were trying to be something different and special. He bought into that, he embraced that, he's the manifestation of it."
I pesonally believe that the Giants got one of the steals of the draft in Barden. And, being a Cowboys' fan, that really disappoints me.

Brandon Jacobs: Not a GM in real life, but plays one...

Apparently, the New York Giants don't need general manager Jerry Reese.

Per Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs says the team does not need either of the two big-name receivers on the trading block - Cleveland's Braylon Edwards and Arizona's Anquan Boldin.
"I don't want him," Jacobs said [of Edwards] yesterday on ESPN 1050 Radio. "There are great players in the league that I don't want. I just think the chemistry between the teammates that I have now is great. We don't need to add a new veteran to the whole group."

"I'm good with where we are," Jacobs said. "I'm glad that we didn't go forward and get [Edwards] or Boldin. Those guys are great guys [but] I'm not interested in that idea."
The Giants addressed their need at receiver by drafting North Carolina's Hakeem Nicks in the first round and Cal Poly's Ramses Barden in the third round. Both players, who looked impressive at yesterday's first team practice, are big targets.

Last year, Steve Smith led the team in receptions (57) and Domenik Hixon led the team in receiving yards (596).

April 25, 2009

And with the 29th-overall pick...

The New York Giants have selected Hakeem Nicks, WR from North Carolina.

The Giants were looking for a big receiver to replace Plaxico Burress, who was released this off-season. Nicks is a big, physical receiver.

Giants targeting Heyward-Bey?

It's much easier to find teams willing to trade down than there are teams who desire to move up in the NFL draft this year.

One of the teams that may be looking to move up is the New York Giants.

Per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News, Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, who posted a 4.3 40 time at the NFL scouting combine, is the Giants' target.

Based on the NFL draft-pick value chart, the Giants, who have the 29th overall pick and 10 total picks in the draft, could move up to 14th if they offer their first-rounder in addition to the picks they were offering the Cleveland Browns for Braylon Edwards. Reports were they offered the Browns the second- and fifth-round picks they had acquired from the Saints for Jeremy Shockey.

The talks between the Browns and Giants regarding Braylon Edwards are reportedly "dead" although Paul Schwartz of the New York Post argues that trade talks were never as serious as reported.

Not only is Heyward-Bey fast, he is a big target (6'2" and 210 pounds) the Giants covet after releasing Plaxico Burress. As a junior, Heyward-Bey had 45 receptions for 694 yards and five TDs last year.

April 19, 2009

Jerry Reese content with Giants receivers?

Per Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News, New York Giants GM Jerry Reese is comfortable with the current group of receivers on the team.

As Vacchiano points out, most of the Giants' receivers are young and have been reasonably high draft picks.

The Giants took Sinorice Moss in the second round in 2006, Steve Smith in the second round in 2007 and Mario Manningham in the third round last year. Domenik Hixon, who was a waiver-wire addition from Denver in 2007, was drafted in the fourth round by Denver in 2006.

All four of those receivers are 25 years old or younger.
"It's not like we have no one at receiver," said an incredulous Reese. "We have some players that we like at wide receiver. We have good receivers on this team."

"I think people are panicked a little bit about the receiver (position)," Reese said. "I don't think we're panicked about it. We have good players that we can win football games with. We have pro football receivers on our team right now. We're going to try to improve it, but sometimes if you can't do that, you go with what you have. You win with the hand that you are dealt and don't look back."
Last year, Hixon led the team in receiving yards (596) and Steve Smith led the team in receptions (57). If the Giants draft a receiver instead of making a trade for a big-time receiver such as Braylon Edwards, Smith and Hixon would likely be the starters. Moss and Manningham would likely compete as the third receiver.

Should G-Men pursue Boldin or Braylon?

With two big-name receivers available via trade, Gary Myers of the Daily News takes a look at who might be the better replacement for Plaxico Burress, who was released this off-season.

The Giants began talking to the Cleveland Browns about Braylon Edwards at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. More recently, the Arizona Cardinals have stated that Anquan Boldin is available for trade if the offer is right.
"Anquan Boldin is a tremendous football player and he's got great hands," one coach said. "He's powerful and a great runner after the catch. Braylon is a more down-the-field guy who can make plays running go routes and deep posts. Anquan is explosive and faster and more powerful than you think. He can make the first guy miss. For the system the Giants run, Edwards will probably fit them more than Anquan. Looking at the routes Plaxico ran, that fits Edwards' style."
Boldin, who has two years remaining on his existing contract, earned his third Pro Bowl trip in 2008. Edwards is entering the final year of his deal.

In 2008, Boldin caught 89 passes for 1038 yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games. Edwards caught 55 passes for 873 yards and three touchdowns. Edwards saw a huge drop-off in production from his breakout year (1289 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns) in 2007.

The main question surrounding Boldin is whether he can be a true number one without someone like Larry Fitzgerald on the other side. The questions surrounding Edwards are his hands (he led the league in drops in 2008) and his desire for the limelight.

If the Giants don't land either Braylon Edwards or Anquan Boldin before next weekend's draft, the Giants could draft a receiver in the first round (pick 29). Some of the receivers that may be available when the Giants pick include Rutgers' Kenny Britt, Maryland's Darrius Heyward-Bey, UNC's Hakeem Nicks and Florida's Percy Harvin.

Dockery signs his tender

New York Giants cornerback Kevin Dockery signed his one-year tender that will pay him a guaranteed salary of $1.54 million in 2009.

Dockery had 36 tackles and one interception in 2008 as a back-up to Corey Webster and Aaron Ross.

He was undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2006.

Per Giants' owner, Plaxico ignored Giants

New Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler, who was traded by the Broncos, reached out to WR Plaxico Burress, who was released by the Giants, to gauge his interest in Da Bears.

One of the things that Cutler and Burress shared in common was that they ignored their team and, not surprisingly, neither team's owner liked it.
“[G.M.] Jerry Reese had attempted to contact him on a number of occasions and was not able to get a hold of him which, to be honest with you, irritated me quite a bit,” [Giants co-owner John] Mara said [yesterday on Sirius radio].

“[T]he case was postponed again so we felt like that would continue to leave us in limbo,” Mara said. “We were attempting to settle one of the two grievances out there with him, one of which was decided in his favor just the other day, and we were not having much success in those settlement discussions and we just felt like enough was enough and it’s time to just move on.”
Burress faces possible jail time pending his case, which was adjourned until mid-June, for gun possession charges and a possible suspension under the league's personal conduct policy. In other words, whether Burress ignored the team or not, it was likely that the Giants would have parted ways with the troubled receiver.

April 06, 2009

Plaxico Burress won $1 million

Plaxico Burress has finally received some good news.

The former Giant won his arbitration case against his former team, who withheld the final $1 million portion of his signing bonus. The Giants argued that Plaxico's behavior and how his contract was structured warranted that the remainder of the bonus be forfeited.

However, per NFLPA General Counsel Richard Berthelsen, via the New York Daily News, Special Master (arbitrator) Stephen Burbank used a specific clause within the Collective Bargaining Agreement in his decision.
"...money could be forfeited 'if a player willfully takes action that has the effect of substantially undermining his ability to fully participate and contribute in either preseason training camp or the regular season.'"
However, the Special Master deemed that Burress didn't "willfully" take action to undermine his ability to participate.
"If I refuse to go to training camp because I want a new contract, there's a a causal connection between my actions and preventing the team from having my services," Berthelsen said. "But if I go out and get in a car that needs new brakes and I get hurt in an accident, am I intending to deprive the team of my services?

"The Special Master said 'No.'"
Berthelsen's analogy explains Plaxico's F-bomb-loaded encounter with police recently where he drove like "he was going to kill somebody."

April 05, 2009

Burress used F bombs when pulled over

Plaxico Burress, who was recently released by the New York Giants, should be on his best behavior while his attorney Benjamin Brafmin attempts to negotiate a plea deal with the NYC D.A.'s office. Having his case adjourned to mid-June, Burress is facing a gun-possession charge that carries a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years and a maximum sentence of 15 years.

However, it's Plaxico's lack of good judgment that often gets him in trouble with either the law, the NFL or his team (when he's on one).

Per James Fanelli of the New York Post, Burress had a profanity-laden run-in with an officer in Florida after a traffic stop. The officer said that he pulled over Burress, because he was driving like "he was going to kill somebody."
"F- - - you! You're going to be in a lot of trouble. I know the sheriff personally," the receiver raged at Broward County Deputy Sheriff Donald Harris during the March 18 traffic stop, police said.
Not only did Burress make the threat to the deputy sherriff, he apparently lied about having the connection as the sheriff says that he "never met" Burress.

On March 1st, Burress was pulled over as well and received four motor-vehicle violations then.

Burress is unlikely to avoid jail time and/or a league suspension. Although I'm not sure how this affects his potential plea deal, I wouldn't be surprised if it leads to less leniency by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell when determining the duration of his future suspension.

Winslow says Edwards would love to be a Giant

Yesterday the New York Giants released wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who faces a possible jail sentence on gun possession charges and a league suspension under the personal conduct policy.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Kellen Winslow Jr., who was traded by the Browns this off-season, says that his former teammate Braylon Edwards would like to play for the NY Giants.
“For some reason I don’t (think he’ll play for the Browns in 2009),” Winslow said. “I know Braylon would love to go to New York. The Giants would fit him to the ‘T’ and he would have so much fun up there. I know he loves Cleveland but New York would be a great fit for him.”
The Giants and Browns had discussions at the NFL scouting combine (February) about Edwards. Giants were believed to have offered their second- and fifth-round picks acquired in the Jeremy Shockey trade last year to the Browns in addition to their choice of Mario Manningham or Domenik Hixon when the talks died down.

Edwards, who Winslow calls a "city guy," had a disappointing season in 2008 after having a break-out year in 2007.

In 2007, Edwards had 80 receptions for 1289 yards and 16 touchdowns. In 2008, he had 55 receptions for 873 yards and 3 touchdowns.

April 03, 2009

Giants release Plaxico Burress

The New York Giants released troubled wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

Burress, who shot himself in the leg at a nightclub last year, faces a prison term and/or a league suspension. On March 31st, Burress had his request for an adjournment granted, which postpones his case to mid-June.

His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, is attempting to reach an agreement on a plea deal. Brafman, who hasn't spoken to Burress since his release today, e-mailed Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.
"I think the Giants made a huge mistake, speaking as both his lawyer and a Giants fan," Brafman wrote via e-mail.
The Giants had become frustrated with Burress even before he shot himself. Burress was suspended for the Giants' week 5 game against the Seahawks and he was fined $45,000 for his actions in week 7.

With Burress' legal and league issues, the likelihood that Burress would have seen the field in 2009 was small.

As far as possible replacements, the Giants have had some preliminary discussions with the Browns about Braylon Edwards.

Or the Giants could inquire about the Cardinals' disgruntled receiver Anquan Boldin, who is represented by Drew Rosenhaus. However, Rosenhaus, who also represents Burress, pissed off the Giants when he e-mailed other teams in January saying Burress was available for a trade.

The top free agent WR available is Torry Holt and there will be several solid wide receivers available when the Giants pick with the 29th overall pick.

March 31, 2009

Plaxico case adjourned until June

As expected, the case for Plaxico Burress has been adjourned per the request of Burress and his attorney Benjamin Brafman. The case will be postponed until June 15th as Burress and Brafman seek to negotiate a plea deal.
"There's been a lot reported in recent days, a lot's been said that I don't think is necessarily accurate," Brafman said. "As we speak there is no agreement of any kind. We're trying our best to see if there is a way to resolve the case."
Burress is looking for a plea deal that doesn't include any jail time. However, Assistant District Attorney John Wolfstaetter would be open to a plea deal that included jail time.

Brafman spoke about the uncertainty of Plaxico's football future.
"I think that is a decision for him, his manager, and the New York Giants," the lawyer said. "I assume a lot will depend on how, when and if this case is resolved."
The Giants have a mandatory mini-camp that begins on June 16th, the day after Burress' court hearing.

March 30, 2009

Still no plea deal for Plaxico

New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress has a scheduled court date tomorrow.

Per Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News, Plaxico's attorney Benjamin Brafman says that "tomorrow will involve an adjournment only."

Does the adjournment mean that a plea deal is close?
"It is merely an adjournment. Do not read into it beyond that," Brafman e-mailed Vacchiano.
The minimum sentence for second-degree weapons possession charges is 3 1/2 years. While Plaxico is seeking a plea deal that won't require any jail time, most plea deals reached on these charges result in jail time.

Plaxico wants to play in 2009. Even if he only serves a minimal sentence, he will likely be suspended for a minimum of four games by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell under the personal conduct policy.

In the 10 games he played last year, Burress finished with 35 receptions and 454 receiving yards.

March 26, 2009

Plaxico's attorney trying to work out plea

New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress has a pre-trial hearing set for Tuesday morning in Manhattan criminal court.

In November, Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg at Latin Quarter, a Manhattan nightclub. Burress is facing two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a loaded and unlicensed weapon. If found guilty, the minimum sentence is 3 1/2 years.

At the time, NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg said that Burress should be prosecuted "to the fullest extent of the law."
"Our children are getting killed with guns in the streets. Our police officers are getting killed with guns in the hands of criminals, and because of that, we got the State Legislature to pass a law that if you carry a loaded handgun, you get automatically 3½ years in the slammer," Bloomberg told reporters. "I don't think that anybody should be exempt from that, and I think it would be an outrage if we didn't prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, particularly people who live in the public domain, make their living because of their visibility. They are the role models for our kids."
Per ESPN.com, Burress' attorney, Benjamin Brafman, is trying to work out a plea agreement.
"People should reserve judgment on Mr. Burress until all the facts are in this case are in," Brafman said at the time.
If Brafman gets the charges reduced to third-degree possession, Plaxico would avoid the minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years. According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, roughly 80 percent of people convicted of third-degree possession spend time in jail.

If Burress doesn't serve any time (or serves much less than 3 1/2 years), it reinforces the public's opinion that there are two sets of rules in society.

Osi Umyeniora will be ready for training camp

New York Giants finished sixth in the NFL in sacks (42) last year without DE Osi Umyeniora after leading the league in sacks (53) with him in 2007. Umyeniora had 13 sacks in 2007.

After tearing the lateral meniscus in his left knee last pre-season, Umenyiora says that he is 99 percent and that he will be ready for training camp in July.

He also said that he was between 80-85 percent at the end of last season. He would have considered playing if he hadn't been placed on injured reserve.
"I haven't been in a situation like that my whole life," Umenyiora said. "To see the way it unfolded and the pain and rehabilitation process, how grueling and how hard it was, I think that added an extra motivation (for this season)."
In addition to getting Umenyiora back in 2009, the Giants have added Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard to the defensive line in the off-season.

Giants, Browns talked about Edwards

Trade rumors had circulated involving the Giants DE Mathias Kiawanuka and the Browns WR Braylon Edwards.

Per the Newark Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo, Scout.com's The Giant Insider has reported that the Browns and Giants had a series of offers and counter-offers involving Edwards. However, Kiawanuka wasn't involved in the trade discussions.

The report says that the Giants originally offered their 2009 draft picks acquired from the Saints (second- and fifth-rounders) when they traded Jeremy Shockey last year. After the Browns said no, they countered with Giants' WR Steve Smith. The Giants said no and countered with either Mario Manningham or Domenik Hixon, which the Browns turned down.

Per the report, trade talks have slowed, but Garafolo points out that they could heat up again depending on what happens with Plaxico Burress. If Burress faces jail time and/or league suspensions, the talks could intensify as the Giants enter the Plan B phase.

Edwards, the Browns first-round pick in 2005, is in the final year of his contract. Last year, Edwards had a huge drop-off in production from 2007 including leading the league with 16-22 dropped passes.

In 2008, Edwards had 55 receptions for 873 yards and three touchdowns. The prior year, he broke out with 80 catches for 1289 yards and 16 TDs.

Giants want Plaxico back

Giants WR Plaxico Burress faces bigger challenges than getting back on the field at Giants Stadium. Specifically, he would serve a sentence of 3 1/2 years in prison if convicted of an illegal weapons charge. While in a club with a gun in his sweat pants, the idiot accidentally shot himself in the leg.

However, if Plax is able to withhand his legal challenge, the Giants say Burress is welcome back.
"Right now, he is still a Giant, and if things work out and he's on board with what we want coming back, we'd love to have him back," Giants GM Jerry Reese said Tuesday.
Even if Burress isn't convicted, he could (and likely will) face a suspension from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell under the league's Personal Conduct Policy. A guilty conviction isn't mandatory to warrant a suspension under the league's policy.

My guess is Goodell isn't a fan of its marquee players shooting up a club, even if it is by "accident" and if the only person getting shot is the player himself.

Whether or not Burress is back, the Giants will likely add another WR through the NFL draft. But Reese is confident in the 4 youngsters on the roster - Dominik Hixon, Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss and Mario Manningham.
"Who knows who is going to step out of the shadows and be the guy?" Reese said. "Again, we'll try to continue to upgrade that spot, but we have good players at that position right now. We can go into the fall with these guys, but we are definitely going to try to continue to upgrade that position."
Last year, Burress had 35 receptions for 35 receptions for 454 yards and 4 TDs in 10 games.

Derrick Ward signs with Bucs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent RB Derrick Ward to a 4-year contract that is worth $17 million. Ward will earn a 2009 guaranteed salary of $6 million.

Prior to meeting with the Bucs today, Ward visited with the Bengals, Eagles and Broncos. And it didn't seem out of the question that Ward might have returned to the Giants.

Primarily serving in a back-up role to Brandon Jacobs, Ward averaged 5.6 yards/carry last season and rushed for 1025 yards. Although Ward will turn 29 before the season starts, he only has 342 carries in his career.

Ward and Earnest Graham should split the load next year. Graham played only 10 games last year after injuring his ankle in the Minnesota game. Graham carried the ball 132 times for 563 yards and 4 TDs.

This is a good move for the Bucs, who are flush with cash having entered free agency with $61 million in cap space. Over the weekend, they re-signed WR Michael Clayton and traded for Kellen Winslow Jr.

Giants, Canty agree to terms

The New York Giants have signed Chris Canty to a 6-year, $42 million contract. Canty played DE in the 3-4 scheme for the Cowboys, but will play both DT and DE for the Giants.

In addition, the Giants have signed DT Rocky Bernard, who played for the Seahawks since 2002.
“Chris is an athletic, big man who can play anywhere in our front,” [Giants GM Jerry] Reese said. “He gives us a lot of flexibility in that respect. Our defensive line did a very good job last year, but without Osi and Stray, we seemed to get worn down late in the season and we weren’t able to generate the kind of pass rush that we’re accustomed to. Hopefully with the addition of Rocky and Chris, and with Osi coming back, that won’t happen again.”
The Giants are stacked at D-Line including Canty, Bernard, Osi Umyeniora, Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, Jay Alford, Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka and Dave Tollefson. Robbins, who will be 32 this month, could be the odd-man out.

Several teams were interested in Canty including the Seahawks, Packers, 49ers and Titans. The 4th-round draft pick out of Virginia has 10 career sacks in his 4-year career.

Derrick Ward to visit with Broncos today

Since free agency began, free-agent RB Derrick Ward has visited with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals (both on Saturday). Today Ward is going to visit with the Denver Broncos.

However, there is still the chance that Ward could end up back with the Giants.
"They left the door open for me and I know they would love to have me back, but it's a business," Ward said on Sirius NFL Radio on Friday, "and the business aspect of it right now is I feel I'm a starter and I proved I can help a team win some games and reach a Super Bowl level."
It is a business. And as Michael Lombardi of National Football Post and NFL Network said regarding free-agent RBs in general is that many teams have seen what mid-round draft picks a la Steve Slaton in Houston can do and would prefer to spend minimum rookie money on adding a back than spending in free agency.

Ward finished 2008 with 1,025 rushing yards as a backup to Brandon Jacobs. Ward averaged 5.6 yards per carry and had 215 rushing yards in the Giants' win over the Carolina Panthers in week 16. That win clinched home-field advantage for the Giants in the NFC playoffs.

Giants sign Rocky Bernard

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with DT Rocky Bernard although the terms weren't not immediately available.

Bernard, who was drafted by the Seahawks in the 5th round of the 2002 NFL draft, had the 2nd best year of his career in 2008. He finished with 55 tackles and 4 sacks. In 2005, he had 8.5 sacks.
“He’s a veteran defensive tackle with skins on the wall,” GM Jerry Reese said. “He plays hard, he’s stout against the run and he has to be accounted for as a pass rusher. We’re happy to have Rocky on board in our defensive tackle rotation.”
He will join Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield in the DT rotation.

Free-agent DE Chris Canty is visiting with the Giants and is expected to be in town until Sunday around dinner time. According to Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News, Canty's asking price is around $8 million per season.

Giants sign Boley to 5-year deal

The New York Giants signed LB Michael Boley to a 5-year contract worth $25 million.

After getting benched in favor of Coy Wire last year, Boley will have the opportunity to compete and likely earn the starting job in New York.

He played on the strong side in Atlanta, but is only 223 pounds and very athletic. His skills are more suited to the weak side where Chase Blackburn started for the Giants in 2008.

Michael Boley to visit with Giants

The New York Giants are going to visit with LB Michael Boley, who has played the past 4 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

Boley played on the strong side in Atlanta, but only weighs 223 pounds. It's possible that if the Giants sign him, he could move to the weak side.

Danny Clark and Chase Blackburn are currently the starters on the strong side and weak side, respectively.

Peter King of SI reports that Boley could land a contract in the $5-million-per-year range.

Last year, Boley was benched last season in favor of Coy Wire, but Boley has started 52 games in his 4-year career. As a 5th-round pick by the Falcons in 2005, Boley had his best season in 2007 when he finished with 110 tackles and 3 interceptions.

Giants Butler to visit Rams

According to Fox Sports, free-agent strong safety James Butler is visiting with the St. Louis Rams Friday.

Butler started 26 games in the past 2 seasons with Steve Spagnuolo as Giants defensive coordinator. Spagnuolo, who is now head coach in St. Louis, is looking to upgrade the Rams at strong safety.

The team franchised free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe this off-season.

Last year, Todd Johnson and Corey Chavous, who was benched mid-season, started at SS for the Rams.

Butler earned $1,420,840 in 2008.

Giants, Jacobs agree on 4-year deal

The New York Giants have reached a 4-year deal with RB Brandon Jacobs, who was franchised by the Giants on February 13th. The contract is valued at $25 million including $13 million in guarantees.

If the Giants and Jacobs didn't work out a deal, he would have received a guaranteed $6.621 million for 2009. Instead he will earn $5.5 this year and $15 million over the first 2 years of his contract.
"I was confident all along that this was going to get done," Jacobs said in a statement released through the team. "I didn't panic one bit. I know the reason we did it the way we did. I knew I was going to be here. I was super confident, and I am here. I'm happy about it."
Although Jacobs has only played 11 and 13 games in the past 2 seasons, respectively, he has rushed for 1000+ yards both seasons. The 6'4", 264-pound Jacobs also rushed for 15 TDs in 2008.

Giants will prepare as if Plax won't be back

In a NY Daily News poll asking fans if the Giants should "keep" or "dump" Plaxico, results were split down the middle. Actually, 51% voted that the Giants "dump him."

But Plaxico wants to come back and be an elite receiver again.
"If I only can get back on the field, I want to be the kind of player that I can be," the Giants' coach (Tom Coughlin) said at the scouting combine, quoting what Burress told [WR coach Mike] Sullivan.
That's a big "if."

Plaxico has legal proceedings surrounding the accidental shooting at the nightclub incident at the end of March. If he doesn't land in jail, it's possible that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell could suspend Plaxico.
"I hope he's motivated, but the legal process is what's important right now and his health is what's important right now," Reese said Saturday at the NFL scouting combine. "But we'll prepare as if he's not going to be here, and if he is, it's a bonus."
If the Giants go the free agent route, the top unrestricted free agent WR is T.J. Houshmandzadeh of the Bengals.

The Giants have the 29th overall pick in the first round and this is one of the deepest drafts for WRs in years. As an example, Scout.com has 13 different WRs with 4- or 5-star rankings. The only other position that Scouts has ranked with more 4- or 5-star prospects is CB, which has 15.

Ahmad Bradshaw serving 2nd half of sentence

NY Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw spent 30 days in jail last year and will complete his 60-day sentence from now until March 17th.
Said Charles Stacy (Bradshaw's attorney): "Upon completion of this sentence Mr. Bradshaw will have satisfied all of his obligations to the Juvenile Court of Tazewell County as it relates to his prior misdemeanor conviction as a juvenile."
The sentence came from a violation of his probation agreement from a misdemeanor he committed when he was 15 years old. But Bradshaw has never disclosed what that misdemeanor was.

Bradshaw will compete with Danny Ware to back up Brandon Jacobs, who received the franchise tag from the Giants, as Derrick Ward will likely leave via free agency.

Giants franchise Brandon Jacobs

The New York Giants placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on RB Brandon Jacobs yesterday.

While Jacobs can negotiate with other teams, it would be costly (loss of 2 first-round draft picks) if another team signed him. In the history of the NFL, no team has ever paid that price to sign a player that has been franchised.

The benefit for the Giants is that it provides them with plenty of time to work out a long-term deal with Jacobs. If they can't work out a long-term deal, Jacobs would earn $6.621 million (the average of the top 5 RB salaries) in 2009.
"With the deadline approaching, it was the right business thing to do at this point, although we are hopeful to get a longer-term deal hammered out in the near future," general manager Jerry Reese said in a team statement. "I did speak to Brandon and we had a very good conversation."
The Giants had until February 19th to decide to use the franchise tag, otherwise Jacobs would have become a free agent on February 27th.

Jacobs, who said last month that he would be "angry and it probably would cause some problems" if he were tagged, had a much more positive outlook on the situation after it has really happened.
"If [the Giants] didn't want me here, they would say, 'Let him hit the market and see what he gets out there and then offer him toward the end of the whole thing,'" he said. "I feel good about the situation that I will be here at least for one more year if nothing gets done, but I am very confident that something is going to be done soon."
The Giants can't afford to not work out a long-term deal with Jacobs, who rushed for 1089 yards and 15 TDs on 219 carries in 13 games. He has had some knee injuries, but at 6'4" and 264 pounds, there is not a more intimidating runner in the NFL.

Jacobs (Earth) is part of RB trio nicknamed "Earth, Wind and Fire." Fire (Admad Bradshaw) will be back in 2009, but Wind (Derrick Ward) is due to become a free agent on February 27th unless the Giants can work out a deal.

Lawrence Taylor to compete on Dancing with the Stars

Pro Football Hall of Famer and fierce pass rusher Lawrence Taylor will be a contestant on ABC's Dancing with the Stars season 8, which airs beginning March 9th.

Taylor, who turned 50 years old February 4th, becomes the 5th current or former NFL player to appear on the show. The others were Jerry Rice (season 2 runner-up), Emmitt Smith (season 3 winner), Jason Taylor (season 6 runner-up) and Warren Sapp (season 7 runner-up).

Considering all 4 NFL predecessors have finished 1st or 2nd, the pressure is on for LT. However, if Taylor plays his cards right, he should be able to parlay his appearance into some endorsement deals.

Here is Taylor's competition: Lil' Kim, Steve-O, Nancy O'Dell, Shawn Johnson, Chuck Wicks, Gilles Marini, Denise Richards, Steve Wozniak, Belinda Carlisle, David Alan Grier, Ty Warren and Jewel.

Giants re-sign Carr and release 3 others

NY Giants back-up QB David Carr, the former #1 overall draft pick in the 2002 NFL draft, was re-signed by the Giants for a 1-year, $1 million deal.
"Honestly, there are spots out there and starting positions and there could have been some things where it would have just been my Houston situation all over again and it wasn't really something I was looking forward to, to tell you the truth,'' Carr said. "Maybe next year there would be some better situations out there for me and we will look at that when that comes up, but I am happy that the Giants and I could come to an agreement where I am coming back for one more."
Who can blame him for wanting to forget the Houston days?

David Carr holds the NFL record for times being sacked (76 times in 2002). In addition, he was sacked the 3rd-most times (68) in 2005.

The Giants also cut RB Reuben Droughns, CB Sam Madison and S Sammy Knight. All three players finished the season on IR.

David Tyree says his catch is best ever

NY Giants WR David Tyree says his catch in Super Bowl XLII against the New England Patriots was the greatest ever.
"You're talking about an 18-0 Patriots team, 12-point underdogs, and me. Santonio Holmes is a starter, and you have me who had four catches [in the 2007 regular season]."
Santonio Holmes, Super Bowl XLIII MVP, made a great catch to give the Steelers the lead (and eventual win) with less than a minute to go against the Arizona Cardinals.

However, Tyree's catch against his helmet with Rodney Harrison trying to pry the ball free is the greatest catch I've ever seen. And Eli Manning's elusiveness in the pocket was no small feat either.

Here's the Tyree/Manning play:

Goodell to wait for legal system on Plaxico decision

NY Giants WR Plaxico Burress, who shot himself in the leg and was suspended by the Giants for four games, could face disciplinary action from the NFL.

But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will be patient and allow the process to work itself out before coming to a decision on Burress' status.
"First, you've got to let the legal process go," Goodell said. "Once you know where it is, we will make that determination. I'm not going to deal with the hypothetical right now. Let's see where it is. We're going to cooperate with law enforcement and let that process go through and then we'll deal with it."
Burress will be back in court on March 31st and faces between 3 1/2 and 15 years in prison.

Jacobs says Giants would've repeated with Plax

Would the New York Giants have repeated as Super Bowl Champions had Plaxico not shot himself? Giants RB Brandon Jacobs says "yes."
"If we have Plax on our team, we go 15-1 and we win the Super Bowl," Jacobs said yesterday. "I'm not afraid to say that and I'll say it to anybody on any team."
Regardless of what anyone says, there is a reason why they play the game. A month ago, nobody expected the Cardinals to be in the Super Bowl.

As far as Burress is concerned, he didn't perform well when he was on the field (35 catches for 454 yards and 4 TDs in 10 games). In fact, his numbers are much worse if you exclude the season opener (10 catches for 133 yards). In the other 9 games, Burress averaged 2.8 receptions and 35.7 yards per game.

But his lack of presence allowed other teams to focus on stopping or slowing down the Giants rushing attack, which led the NFL at 157.4 ypg.

So, if the Giants would have won it all with Plaxico (according to Jacobs), and only Plaxico is responsible for not being out there, you would expect Jacobs to be pissed off at Burress. But he's not.
"You can't judge him for what happened because no one really knows what goes on out in those streets," Jacobs said. "A lot of people don't know anything about what happens or how targeted we are. The guy's not a criminal. He shot himself, he didn't shoot no one else and I think they should get off of his case and [he should] be able to continue his career."
Jacobs is an idiot. If Burress was so concerned with his safety that he needs to tote a gun, then he shouldn't have gone. It's that simple. He's lucky he only shot himself, but it could have been much worse.

WR is Giants biggest off-season priority

On November 30th, New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress was expected to miss the game due to a sore hamstring. However, he ended up shooting himself in the leg at Latin Quarter nightclub a couple of nights before the game.

Eli Manning threw 3 TDs in the 6 games (last 5 regular-season games and 1 playoff game) that Plaxico missed. Of those 3 TDs, one was thrown to a WR (Amani Toomer) and two were thrown to TEs (Darcy Johnson and Kevin Boss).

So, in other words, the last time that Eli Manning has thrown a TD to a WR was in the 1st quarter of the Redskins game on November 30th.

Giants GM Jerry Reese said he would be open to the idea of Plaxico returning if "everything goes right." However, Giants head coach Tom Couglin wasn't as open to the idea.

As Gary Myers of the Daily News points out, WR is the biggest off-season priority.

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin wants out of Arizona although management officially says they won't trade the unhappy WR with 2 years left of his contract.

But Myers says Boldin should be their "top target" if the Cards are willing to trade him. The Giants aren't the only team interested in Boldin so the bidding war could get intense and the Cardinals would be wise to entertain offers (at a minimum).

The free agent wide receivers this year include the Bengals' T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the Bucs' Antonio Bryant, the Saints' Devery Henderson and the Steelers' Nate Washington.

There is a talented group of WRs in this year's draft led by Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech and Jeremy Macklin of Missouri, but both of those players will be gone before the Giants pick at 29. The WRs expected to go late-first or second round include Florida's Percy Harvin, Maryland's Darrius Heyward-Bey and Rutgers' Kenny Britt.

Giants WR shot in leg, hand

A New York Giants WR was shot in the leg and hand. And this time it wasn't Plaxico Burress.

Taye Biddle was shot while visiting family in Decatur, Alabama.
"There is no evidence to indicate that Biddle did anything to contribute, cause or provoke the shooting," a statement from the Decatur Police Department said.
Ironically, Biddle was promoted from the practice squad when Burress was suspended after shooting himself in the leg.
