Eagles cut Brian Westbrook

A day after the Chargers cut LaDainian Tomlinson, the Eagles and running back Brian Westbrook have parted ways as the Eagles released the veteran running back.

"This is the absolutely worst part of the job, but if you're fortunate enough to stick around long enough, you're going to see these things happen," [coach Andy] Reid said, via Bob Ford of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Westbrook, who will turn 31 in September, was slated to earn $7.25 million in 2010 despite missing half of last season due to two concussions. This move was not a surprise considering Westbrook's triple threat of advancing age, exorbitant salary and health concerns.

"Brian is one of the greatest Eagles of all time and he is an even a better person and leader," Reid said. "In my mind, there has not been a more versatile running back that the NFL has seen."

The release of Westbrook boosts the fantasy value of rookie LeSean McCoy, who was the team's second-round draft pick. However, expectations for McCoy should be tempered considering the Eagles' pass-first-and-ask-questions-later philosophy.

In 2009, McCoy finished the season with 637 rushing yards and caught 40 passes for 308 yards. A season with 800-1000 rushing yards and 400-500 receiving yards is likely in 2010.

Westbrook: "trying to get ready for ... upcoming season"

Last year was a season that Eagles running back Brian Westbrook would like to forget.

Westbrook, who missed eight games in 2009 due to suffering multiple concussions, admitted on WGFX radio in Nashville yesterday that he wasn't fully healed from his first concussion despite missing all of the medical tests.

"I don't think a lot of people are taking [concussions] as serious as they should be because really it is a life or death thing," Westbrook said (via the Philadelphia Daily News). "The one thing that people have to know about concussions is that if you continue to play with a concussion and you continue to play without being completely healed then you run the risk of not being able to walk and talk and communicate and remember and of course early onset of Alzheimer's . . . as well as dementia."

Despite the concussions, Westbrook said in the interview that he is "trying to get ready for this next upcoming season."

That said, he is owed $7.25 million next season and rookie LeSean McCoy, the team's second-round pick in 2009, is Philadelphia's running back of the future.

So, even if Westbrook decides not to retire, do the Eagles want to pay that much money to a thirty-something running back coming off multiple concussions? I highly doubt it.

Whether or not Westbrook is back in Philadelphia in 2010, one thing is certain. His days as an elite running back (in real life or fantasy football) are over.

NFC playoff seeding set

While the NFC playoff seedings are now set, the final AFC playoff teams and seeding will be decided by the Jets-Bengals game tonight.

Here are the NFC seeds:

1. New Orleans: Although the Saints entered the weekend with the top seed already clinched, they enter the playoffs with a three-game losing streak after today's loss to the Panthers.

2. Minnesota: The Vikings bounced back in a big way with an old-fashioned beatdown of the New Jersey Giants by the score of 44-7.

3. Dallas: After back-to-back shutouts of the Redskins last week and the Eagles today, the Cowboys clinched the NFC East title and the #3 seed. They will host the Eagles again next week.

4. Arizona: The Cardinals won the NFC West and will face the Packers again next week. This week, the Packers crushed the Cardinals 33-7.

5. Green Bay: Tough to beat a playoff two weeks in a row. But that's what the Packers will try to do.

6. Philadelphia: If Minnesota had lost and Philadelphia had won today, the Eagles would have been the #2 seed. Instead it's two rematches of today's games in the wildcard round.

Fantasy Football: Week 17 QB rankings

While most fantasy football leagues conduct their championship game in week 16, some leagues still hold their title game in week 17. That creates the extra challenge of trying to forecast playing time in addition to evaluating matchups.

That said, here are our top five fantasy quarterbacks for week 17:

1. Matt Schaub, Texans (vs Patriots): While they don't control their own destiny like the Jets and Ravens, the Texans need to win to make the playoffs. That means, Schaub will play the entire game. On the season, Schaub has been remarkably consistent with only two single-digit fantasy games and only three games with less than 250 passing yards. Over the past five weeks, the Patriots have allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.

2. Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers (at Dolphins): Big Ben is two games off his franchise-record passing performance (503 yards). Over the past five weeks, the Dolphins have allowed the third-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. As the Steelers face a similar scenario as the Texans, you should expect Roethlisberger to play the entire game and light up an inexperienced Dolphins' secondary.

3. Brett Favre, Vikings (vs Giants): The Giants secondary has been banged up all season and over the past five weeks, they have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. The Vikings have lost three of their past four games and Favre has posted single-digit fantasy points in two of his past three games. Although the Vikings lost to the Bears last week, Favre played well -- 321 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs. With the potential of losing their first-round bye with another defeat, expect Favre and the Vikings to come out swinging -- and gun-slinging.

4. Tony Romo, Cowboys (vs Eagles): In his past five games, Romo has finished with 13+ fantasy points every week. During that span, he has thrown nine touchdowns and only one interception. The mood surrounding the Cowboys is different than last year when they faced the Eagles in a do-or-die game in week 17 last year. The Cowboys didn't respond well last year. Now Romo and the Cowboys have a chance for redemption (and possibly even a first-round bye).

5. Donovan McNabb, Eagles (at Cowboys): With the exception of the two games McNabb missed due to injury, McNabb has posted double-digit fantasy points every week except one. Who held him to under 10 points? This week's opponent. That said, it will be difficult to hold McNabb and their pass-first-and-ask-questions-later offense to less than 10 fantasy points for a second time in a row. McNabb has thrown for 300+ yards in each of the past two weeks and a win Sunday could potentially mean a first-round bye for the Eagles.

Fantasy Football: Week 17 WR rankings

While most fantasy football leagues conduct their championship game in week 16, some leagues still hold their title game in week 17. That creates the extra challenge of trying to forecast playing time in addition to evaluating matchups.

That said, here are our top five fantasy wide receivers for week 17:

1. Andre Johnson, Texans (vs Patriots): For a second year in a row, Johnson is going to lead the NFL in receiving yards. Entering week 17, Johnson and Wes Welker are one of two receivers to average 100 receiving yards per game this season. In the past four games, Johnson has dominated with 32 receptions, 559 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Johnson's offensive explosion has coincided with the Patriots' fantasy friendliness to receivers as the Pats have allowed the second-most fantasy points to wide receivers over the past five weeks.

2. Brandon Marshall, Broncos (vs Chiefs): Marshall only had 39 receiving yards on eight receptions last week, but he has caught 43 passes for 406 yards and four touchdowns over his past four games. Marshall is questionable with a hamstring injury, but he has said that he will play. That said, make sure to check his status prior to kickoff.

3. DeSean Jackson, Eagles (at Cowboys): Jackson doesn't lack for big-play potential nor confidence. He has scored in five consecutive games minus the game he missed due to a concussion and he is tied with Pittsburgh's Mike Wallace for the NFL lead in yards per reception (18.7). During that five-game span, Jackson has 499 receiving yards.

4. Roddy White, Falcons (at Buccaneers): On the season, only five teams have allowed more fantasy points to wide receivers than Tampa Bay. White is coming off his second-most productive game (8-139-2) of the season from a fantasy perspective. With Matt Ryan back and the Falcons looking to post back-to-back winning seasons, White should have another big week.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (vs Giants): Rice is currently sixth in the NFL in receiving yards ahead of guys like Randy Moss, Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall and Steve Smith (both of 'em). Not bad for what was likely a waiver-wire pickup this year. The Vikings offense is sputtering and I expect them to get back on track against a Giants secondary that has been banged-up all year.

Fantasy Football - RB Sit'em Week 16

Merry Christmas to everyone and if you're reading this, there's a good chance you've made it to your fantasy football league's Championship Game. Congratulations and good luck.

Here are some running backs who will likely put fantasy coal into your stockings:

Matt Forte, Bears (vs Vikings): This week concludes a brutal (fantasy) playoff run for Forte, who faced the Packers and Ravens in the two playoff matchups before the Vikings this week. And, in fact, it's been a hugely disappointing season for anyone who drafted Forte as he was arguably the biggest bust of fantasy drafts. In the past five weeks, Forte had one double-digit performance and that was against the Rams. The first time he played the Vikings (week 12), Forte finished with five fantasy points. Don't expect much more in week 16.

Quinton Ganther, Redskins (vs Cowboys): The majority of Ganther's fantasy production over the past two weeks has come from his three rushing touchdowns. But those TDs were scored against teams -- Oakland and NY Giants -- that have allowed the most and third-most rushing TDs, respectively. After last week's pathetic performance collectively as an offense against the Giants, it would be difficult to garner any kind of confidence in Ganther or any Redskins' player. Considering the Cowboys are allowing only 97.7 rushing yards per game (sixth-fewest in NFL), it would be wiser to sit Ganther on your bench.

LeSean McCoy/Brian Westbrook/Leonard Weaver, Eagles (vs Broncos): After missing five weeks, Westbrook will return and play against the Broncos although it's uncertain how many looks he'll eventually get. Nonetheless that will lower McCoy's value as if it weren't low enough due to sharing work with Leonard Weaver, who had a career high in rushing attempts (17) last week. In a pass-first offense like Philly's and with three backs to get touches, none of them should be within 10 feet of your starting lineup this week.

Justin Forsett, Seahawks (vs Packers): After Julius Jones suffered a bruised lung in week 10, Forsett picked up the slack. In weeks 10-12, Forsett averaged nearly 20 fantasy points per game, had two 100-yard rushing games and scored four touchdowns. But since Jones returned in week 13, Jones (42) has received nearly twice as many carries as Forsett (23). That said, it doesn't help that the Seahawks are facing the Packers, who allow the second-fewest rushing yards per game (83.6) in the NFL.

Click here for RB Start'em for Week 16 and/or my Week 16 RB rankings.

Brian Westbrook will play Sunday

After missing the previous five games, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will return on Sunday against the Broncos. That said, his playing time will be limited.

"There are certain things we're going to do with him in the run game, the pass game and we'll see how he does," [coach Andy] Reid said, per the Associated Press. "We're not expecting him to play every play, the whole game."

Westbrook, who has only played six games this year, has little to no fantasy value for Sunday. However, his return further reduces the fantasy value of LeSean McCoy, who has been sharing the workload with fullback Leonard Weaver.

Although McCoy had a rushing touchdown last week, Weaver's career-high 17 rushing attempts on Sunday was nearly double McCoy's (9).

If you have any Eagles running back on your roster, none of them are worth starting in week 16.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 14

Each week I pick three NFL games against the spread (ATS). Here are my week 14 picks:

Chargers +3.5 (over Cowboys): With the obvious exception of the two unbeaten teams (Indianapolis and New Orleans), San Diego has the NFL's longest winning streak (7 games) in the NFL. The Chargers' offense is firing on all cylinders and is averaging 28.5 points per game (third-best in the NFL). During their seven-game winning streak, they have scored 30+ points five times and 20+ points in all seven games. And if you have to bet in a December game involving the Cowboys, which side would you want?

Falcons +10 (over Saints): I don't expect the Falcons to beat the Saints. However, as the Patriots did in their perfect regular-season two years ago, they played a lot of close games down the stretch. We are seeing that with the Saints lately. They needed overtime to beat the Redskins last week as four of their past six games have been decided by 10 points or less. Anything can happen in divisional matchups and giving double-digit points on the road is a little rich for my blood.

Eagles -1 (over Giants): The Giants got a much-needed victory over the Cowboys last week. With a 2-5 record in their past seven games, it would be premature to say that the Giants have turned things around. The Giants have allowed over 20 points in seven consecutive games and the Eagles get playmaker DeSean Jackson back this week. This season, the Giants are 1-6 ATS against opponents with a winning record.

Fantasy Football: Top 50 WRs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 wide receivers for week 13:

1. Randy Moss, Patriots (at Dolphins): In his first matchup against the Dolphins, who rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed (233 ypg), Moss had six receptions for 147 yards and one TD. On the season, Moss leads the NFL in receiving yards (992) and is only one behind the leaders in TD receptions (eight). After getting their ass whooped on prime-time TV, expect the Patriots, Tom Brady, Moss & Co. to come out swinging.

2. Andre Johnson, Texans (at Jaguars): Johnson is one of the league's most complete receivers and perhaps the most underrated. This week, Johnson gets a favorable matchup against the Jaguars, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to receivers this season. On the season, Johnson ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (945).

3. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals (vs Vikings): The Vikings have been without Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, for the past five games. On the season, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. My expectation is for QB Kurt Warner to return from his concussion as Fitzgerald had his worst game of the season with Matt Leinart as QB last week. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (nine) including four TDs in the last three games in which Warner has played.

4. Reggie Wayne, Colts (vs Titans): Wayne is second in receptions (79), second in receiving yards (987) and tied for first in touchdowns (nine) in the league. In addition to their improvements with Vince Young under center, the Titans have improved on the defensive side of the ball as they are healthier now. Only the Lions (27) have allowed more receiving touchdowns than the Titans (25) on the season. During their five-game winning streak, however, the Titans have allowed only the 18th-most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (at Cardinals): In three of his past six games, Rice has 136 receiving yards or more including a game with 201yards. With the exception of his game at Green Bay, Rice has had 89 yards or more in five of his past six. Favre and Rice have built chemistry quickly and they have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to receivers this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 40 RBs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 running backs for week 13:

1. Thomas Jones, Jets (at Bills): The first time that Jones faced the Bills this season, he rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and only the Raiders have allowed more rushing TDs than the Bills (16). Since the Jets want QB Mark Sanchez to air it out less and less (his attempts have gone from 35 to 30 to 21 to 17), Jones better bring his lunch-pail tonight.

2. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Colts): As well as Johnson has played in the past six weeks (125+ rushing yards every week), you can consider Johnson 1(a) -- not #2 -- in this week's rankings. During their five-game winning streak, Johnson has rushed for seven touchdowns. Although the Colts have a middle-of-the-pack run defense on the season, they've given up the 11th-most fantasy points to opposing RBs in the past three weeks.

3. DeAngelo Williams, Panthers (vs Buccaneers): DeAngelo has cooled off a bit with no touchdowns in the past three weeks and only one 100-yard game during that span. The first time that Williams faced the Buccaneers this season, he carried the ball 30 times for 152 yards and two scores. Expect more of the same against the league's third-worst rush defense.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (at Cardinals): The Cardinals were the league's top-ranked run defense earlier in the season, but they have dropped to 14th in the NFL against the run (108.6 ypg allowed). In four of the past five weeks, they have allowed an opposing running back to eclipse the century mark. Surprisingly, Peterson has only three 100-yard games on the season, but he is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (vs Texans): MJD has rushed for more rushing touchdowns (13) than any other running back. (Of course, none of those are as famous as the TD that he didn't score.) That said, Jones-Drew faces a Texans run defense that turned itself around after the first three weeks. In week 3, however, MJD rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Football: Top 25 QBs for Week 13

It's time to put up or shut up. If you haven't yet clinched a playoff berth in your fantasy league, it likely comes down to week 13 for you as most fantasy leagues start their playoffs in week 14.

And to paraphrase Bill Parcells, this is why you buy those cheat sheets, do those mock drafts, etc. -- to get into (and win in) the playoffs.

Here are my top 5 quarterbacks for week 13:

1. Peyton Manning, Colts (vs Titans): Manning is the only QB to average over 300 passing yards per game (310.5) and is second in passing touchdowns (24). While the Titans and their defense have been playing better lately, they have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns (25) this season.

2. Brett Favre, Vikings (at Cardinals): In his past four games, Favre has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, Arizona allows the fourth-most passing yards (258.3 ypg).

3. Drew Brees, Saints (at Redskins): Brees is coming off a five-TD performance against the Patriots in what was arguably the most important regular-season game in team history. Although this week's opponent (Washington) allows the fewest passing yards in the NFL (170.4 ypg), Brees and the Saints offense are firing on all cylinders right now.

4. Tom Brady, Patriots (at Dolphins): Brady failed to connect on a TD pass last week, but he had 332 passing yards against the Dolphins in their first match-up. With targets like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it's not likely that Brady goes TD-less in back-to-back games.

5. Philip Rivers, Chargers (at Chiefs): Rivers has posted three consecutive 100+ QB ratings and this week he faces the Browns, who have allowed the ninth-most passing yards (233.4 ypg) this season. In the past four games, Rivers has thrown eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.

DeSean Jackson has a concussion

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson suffered a concussion against the Washington Redskins yesterday.

That leaves his status for week 13 against the Falcons in doubt although I would expect Jackson to miss the game considering the increased awareness and risk of coming back to soon from concussions.

In the game, Jackson caught his sixth touchdown pass of the season.

On the season, he has caught 44 passes for 769 yards and his average of 17.5 yards per catch ranks fifth in the NFL.

Not only is Jackson a playmaker on offense, but he's the leading punt returner in the NFL with an average of 15.5 yards per return.

DeAngelo Hall won't play vs Eagles

Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who has a sprained knee, will miss Sunday's game against the Eagles, per David Elfin of the Washington Times.

With Hall out, Carlos Rogers will step into the starting lineup opposite of Fred Smoot.

"I'll be ready to play," Rogers said. "It ain't nothing new. I'm not going into the game with the attitude of showing [them]. I know I can play. Obviously, they know it, too. That's just how things shaked out. I just gotta take advantage of the opportunity I get, put something good on the field right now."

The first time the Redskins faced the Eagles, Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson beat Rogers on double-move for a 57-yard touchdown.

However, Redskins coach Jim Zorn says that Rogers has "had a good week of practice."

On the season, the Redskins have allowed the fewest passing yards (161.6 ypg) in the league.

Westbrook out for tonight's game, per Adam Schefter

According to sources of ESPN's Adam Schefter, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook won't play in tonight's game against the Cowboys.

Westbrook sat out last week after suffering a concussion during the game against the Redskins on October 26th.

Both the Cowboys and Eagles are tied for first in the NFC East with 5-2 records. The Giants, who are a half-game behind the leaders at 5-3, are playing the San Diego Chargers this afternoon.

Rookie LeSean McCoy, who was the Eagles' second-round draft pick, will get another start and he leads the Eagles in rushing with 294 yards.

But in the past four games, McCoy has yard-per-carry averages of 2.3, 2.6, 2.6 and 7.5. However, if you remove the 66-yard run he had last week against the Giants, he had 10 carries for 16 yards (or a 1.6 YPC).

Fantasy Football: RB Duds for Week 9

With six teams on a bye in week 9, you won't have the services of Adrian Peterson (Minnesota), Steven Jackson (St. Louis) and Thomas Jones (NY Jets) for your fantasy team this week.

Here are some players who are scheduled to play that I think will under-perform relative to their fantasy rankings for week 9:

Matt Forte, Bears (consensus rank 14): Last year, Forte was one of the biggest surprises in fantasy football. This year, he's one of the biggest disappointments. Through seven games, he has 408 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He's had two good games: 121 yards and a score vs Detroit and 90 yards and two scores vs Cleveland. But anyone can run on Cleveland and Detroit, who have given up the third most and sixth most fantasy points to running backs, respectively. In fact, Forte followed up his first good performance (vs Detroit) with a 23-yard game (15 carries) against a Falcons run defense that currently ranks 23rd in the NFL. This week, Forte faces the team that had led the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed heading into last week. Although the Cardinals allowed the Panthers to run the ball against them last week, they still rank eighth in the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed (96.4 ypg). And if you're looking for Forte to compensate as a receiver, only the Buccaneers have allowed fewer receptions to RBs than the Cardinals have.

Joseph Addai, Colts (consensus rank 12): The positives for Addai? Two consecutive 20-carry games and he's scored five touchdowns in seven games. But Addai is averaging only 3.3 yards per carry on the season and he's never had more than 64 rushing yards in any game this season. Donald Brown, who was injured two weeks ago and didn't play last week, is questionable for Sunday's game and will be a game-time decision. If Brown returns, that will reduce several of Addai's carries. And in the past five weeks, the Texans have allowed the fewest fantasy points to running backs in the NFL.

Brian Westbrook, Eagles (consensus rank 13): Westbrook has been one of the best and most dangerous running backs in the NFL for several years. After sitting last week due to a concussion, Westbrook will be back in the starting lineup against the Cowboys. But let's take a look at Westbrook's numbers pre-concussion. He's averaging only 39.4 rushing yards per game (lowest since his rookie season) and 26 receiving yards per game (lowest since his second season). Westbrook has never received more than 13 carries in one game this season and there is only one game in which he has more than 20 receiving yards. While Westbrook has the potential to make a big play at any time, he's no longer a sure thing (when healthy) in fantasy football.

The Weekly Blitz - Week 9

Every week, I pick three games against the spread (ATS) and I am coming off my second 3-0 week in the past three weeks.

My record on the season is now 14-10, which is solid, but still worse than last season's record of 63.3% correct ATS, which I use as my personal benchmark.

That said, here are my week 9 picks:

Panthers +13 (over Saints): Call me crazy -- after all, I've certainly been called worse -- for picking the Panthers here. But we are seeing a re-emergence of the Panthers' rushing attack and Delhomme, well, hasn't screwed that up allowing the Panthers to win three of their past four. In the past four games, DeAngelo Williams (439 rushing yards) and Jonathan Stewart (261) have combined for 700 rushing yards for an average of 5.0 yards per carry and seven touchdowns. In this series, the road team is not only 13-1 against the spread (ATS) since 2001, but they are 11-4 straight up. While I don't expect the Panthers, who were the # 2 seed in the NFC last year, to pull off a huge upset, I expect them to keep it close -- or, at least, within 13 points.

Eagles -3 (over Cowboys): First, I am rooting to be wrong here (as a Cowboys' fan). But I am realistic. At the beginning of the season, I predicted the Eagles to win the NFC East and for the Cowboys to finish third. But the point spread indicates that these two teams are "even" as the home team generally receives three points for playing at home. Meanwhile, the Eagles pummeled the New York Football Giants last week and are firing on all cylinders. The Cowboys, specifically Tony Romo, have limited the mistakes, which has been key to their three-game winning streak. For the first time in his career, Romo has gone interception-less for three consecutive games. Of all the teams Romo has faced at least twice, the Eagles are the only team to force Romo into more interceptions (eight) than touchdowns thrown (seven). But the Eagles are 16-9 straight up and 16-7 ATS versus the Cowboys since 1996.

Chargers +4.5 (over Giants): Philip Rivers is a better quarterback than Eli Manning. Period. And the difference couldn't be any more apparent in the past four weeks. Although Rivers has faced defenses like Pittsburgh's, Denver's and Oakland's (who has Nnamdi Asomugha, arguably the league's top corner), Rivers hasn't had a passer rating lower than 93.6 in any of his past four games. During that span, Rivers has thrown for 261.3 yards per game, completed 60.5 percent of passes and thrown eight touchdowns and only one interception. Eli, on the other hand, has thrown for 204 ypg, completed 52.1% of passes and has thrown more INTs (6) than TDs (5). I expect the Chargers to take advantage of the Giants' depleted secondary. The Giants may end their three-game skid, but the Chargers will, at a minimum, keep this game close.

Westbrook will play against the Cowboys

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, who suffered a concussion two games ago, has been cleared to play -- and will (barring any setbacks) -- against the Dallas Cowboys in their Sunday Night Football matchup this week.

This will be the first time they face each other this season. Their second matchup, in Dallas, will be played on January 3rd in week 17. (Eagles schedule | Cowboys schedule)

The Eagles and Cowboys are tied for first in the NFC East at 5-2 and hold a half-game lead over the Giants, who are 5-3 and on a three-game losing streak.

Westbrook, who sat out last week, says he's ready to "play with reckless abandon" on Sunday.

"I just look at it as a fluke thing," said Westbrook, per Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. "It was weird, because going into that game, I felt pretty good . . . It's frustrating, but at the same time, I guess the bright side of it, if anything is, it wasn't my knee, wasn't my ankle. I'm concerned about the long-term effects of it, but when you go out there and play football, you have to . . . play worry-free football. You have to go out there and try to play with reckless abandon."

On the season, Westbrook, who has played five games, is second on the team in rushing with 197 yards to rookie LeSean McCoy, who has 294 yards. Although Westbrook is averaging nearly five yards per carry, he's only getting, on average, eight carries per game.

"Veteran players want to keep their jobs, especially when they get a little older, and some of them can be very sensitive about that," [coach Andy] Reid said. "Brian has enough confidence in himself and knows that LeSean is willing to work and willing to listen and be coachable, so Brian shares with him some of his experiences and helps him out. That, from a coaching standpoint, that's invaluable."

The Cowboys rank 13th in the league in rushing yards allowed (105.0 per game) and have allowed only three rushing touchdowns. Only three teams (Vikings, Steelers and Patriots) have allowed fewer rushing TDs.

In fantasy points allowed to running backs, the Cowboys have allowed the 18th most at 18.0 per game.

Westbrook out, McCoy to start

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook won't play today against the Kansas City Chiefs, per ESPN's Sal Paolantonio. Instead, rookie LeSean McCoy will start in his place.

Westbrook, who was listed as questionable with an ankle injury on the team's injury report, will have two weeks for his injury to heal. The Eagles have a bye in week 4.

On the season, Westbrook has 116 rushing yards (on 26 carries) and McCoy, the Eagles' second-round draft pick, has 64 rushing yards (on 14 carries).

The Chiefs have allowed 132.5 rushing yards per game and three rushing touchdowns this season.

Matt Cassel to start Sunday in Philadelphia

The Kansas City Chiefs will start Matt Cassel at quarterback on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, per the Associated Press.

In last week's game against the Raiders, Cassel finished with a passer rating of only 66.3 and threw two interceptions and one touchdown. In the season opener against the Ravens, Brodie Croyle finished with a passer rating of 116.1, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

General manager Scott Pioli traded for and subsequently signed Cassel to a six-year contract extension, but Chiefs coach Todd Haley is more than willing to switch to Croyle (or another QB) if Cassel struggles against the Eagles' defense as well.

“You’ve got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win,” Haley said. “If that means another quarterback being in there other than Matt Cassel, then sign me up.”

Haley points out how well the Warner-for-Leinart switch worked out.

“When we made that change, there was a lot of negative feedback— 'What about the future?' There weren’t too many people saying much when we were in the Super Bowl last year,” Haley said.

In his first season as a starter since high school, Cassel threw for 3,693 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with the Patriots last year.

Eagles to start Kolb over Garcia?

It would make sense to allow Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who fractured a rib in the Carolina game, to recover and not allow him to play on Sunday against the Saints. However, McNabb wrote on his blog yesterday that he will "do my best to be ready" for Sunday.

That being said, it doesn't look likely that McNabb will start on Sunday as the Eagles signed veteran -- and former Eagles' -- quarterback Jeff Garcia yesterday.

"I am excited to come back to the organization, not excited to come back due to Donovan's injury," Garcia said in a conference call, per Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. "But I am looking forward to contributing any way I can, whether it's for a week or 2 weeks or the entire season."

As both McNabb and coach Andy Reid point out, the Eagles are fortunate to find a back-up that has been successful in this offense already.

"Adding Jeff Garcia to the roster is a great idea," McNabb wrote on his blog. "He knows our offense and how we do things around here. He's a great teammate and I look forward to working with him again."

"Jeff's going to come on board with us for 'who knows how long?' here," Reid said. "We're lucky that Jeff was available. Someone who knows the offense, has been very, very successful in the offense, and can come in and also be a positive influence for Kevin Kolb and everyone else in the locker room."

As Phil Sheriden of the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, Kevin Kolb's window of opportunity with the Eagles may be a game. Just one game.

"I'm in my third year now," Kolb said (via Sheriden) yesterday. "It's time to roll. No time better than now if I do have to step out there."

The Eagles drafted Kolb in the second round in 2006, but after this week the Eagles get Michael Vick back from league suspension and possibly McNabb back from his rib injury. That means, the Eagles could have four QBs on the roster and able to play for week 3 -- McNabb, Vick, Kolb and Garcia.

With the addition of Garcia, it would make more sense to allow McNabb the ability to recover in weeks 2 and 3 since the Eagles have their bye week in week 4. And then let a fully healthy McNabb take over in week 5.

McNabb has broken rib; out against Saints?

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb has a broken rib and coach Andy Reid wouldn't rule out the possibility that McNabb could play next week against the Saints.

"He's sore right now. He's got a broken rib," Reid said, per the Associated Press. "We'll just see how he does over the next little bit."

That being said, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports tweeted (via Pro Football Talk) that McNabb won't play next week.

As ineffective as Kevin Kolb may be, it doesn't make sense to risk additional (worse) injury to McNabb. The Eagles play the Saints next week, the Chiefs the following week and then they have a bye in week 4.

If I were Reid, I'd sit McNabb through week 4 and bring him back after the bye.

2009 NFC East Prediction

Here are my predictions for the NFC East in 2009:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Prediction: 10-6 (Eagles Schedule | Eagles Forum)

The NFC East is the strongest division from top to bottom. Although the signing of Michael Vick may have dominated the headlines, the team made other off-season moves. They traded for left tackle Jason Peters and signed him to a long-term contract. They also drafted LeSean McCoy as Brian Westbrook's future replacement and receiver Jeremy Maclin, who will give Donovan McNabb another playmaker. However, the team still lacks a true No. 1 receiver, but minus the T.O. days, the Eagles may have their best receiving corps in the McNabb era. Then again, that isn't saying much. In such a physical and talented division, the question will be how their defense reacts to the losses of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson (who passed away), LB Stewart Bradley (season-ending injury) and safety Brian Dawkins (who was released).

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .535 winning percentage in 2008 (9th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Carolina, vs NY Giants, at San Diego, at Atlanta, at NY Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 27 (9.0 per season)

Links to all 32 NFL team final roster cuts

At 6 p.m. ET tonight, NFL teams were required to make their final cuts to reduce their roster from 75 players to 53 players.

Here are links to lists of cuts (or to the final 53-man roster) for all 32 NFL teams:

AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
AFC South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
AFC West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers

NFC East: Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins
NFC North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
NFC South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
NFC West: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams

I will add links to the Colts' and Jaguars' cuts and/or 53-man rosters once I find links to them. [Links updated above]

Kevin Kolb is #2 on depth chart (for now)

Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb will begin the season as the team's second quarterback behind starter Donovan McNabb, per Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News.

However, coach Andy Reid said that "it depends on how we work the roster on game day."

Earlier in the week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reduced the length of Michael Vick's suspension to two regular-season games.

As Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, it would make sense to make Vick the team's second quarterback and Kolb the team's third quarterback after Vick serves out his suspension.

The NFL allows teams to dress a third/emergency quarterback as a 46th player. However, if the third quarterback enters the game, the first two quarterbacks are no longer allowed to play (at any position).

So, if the week three QB depth chart read McNabb, Kolb and Vick, the Eagles wouldn't be allowed to play McNabb or Kolb if Vick took a snap from center.

"I haven't talked to Andy at all about it. I would hope that their plan was to have me as the No. 2 guy, if something was to happen to 'five.' But again, whatever's best for the team . . . I want to be out there, and I want to have a chance to play if something was to happen," Kolb said.

There is a good chance that last year's emergency quarterback A.J. Feeley will be cut today. As teams reduce their rosters to 53 (from 75), the deadline to make those cuts is this afternoon.

For now, Eagles' depth chart at QB - McNabb, Kolb, Vick?

Despite being out of the NFL for more than two years, new Eagles quarterback Michael Vick practiced well in his first with the team.

"He throws the ball as hard as anybody I've ever seen," said second-year wide receiver Danny Amendola.

However, that doesn't mean that he automatically will be number two on the team's depth chart. Coach Andy Reid told Kevin Kolb, the team's first draft choice in 2007, that he is still the team's number two quarterback, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"It's just a different situation," Kolb said. "I think different situations will call for either one of us. He's a great talent. I don't think we know exactly what we're going to do with him yet."

Aside from McNabb, Kolb and Vick, there are two other quarterbacks currently on the roster -- A.J. Feeley and Adam DiMichele.

When Reid was asked if Feeley's time in Philadelphia was about to end, Reid responded, "We've just got to see as time goes on, but I wouldn't say that."

In six games last year, Kolb finished with a QB rating 21.8 while throwing no touchdowns and four interceptions. Kolb shouldn't get too comfortable with his back-up role and neither should Feeley with his roster spot.

ESPN reports Vick to Eagles

Michael Vick has found a home.

Per Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed Vick to a two-year contract.

The last time Vick played was on December 31, 2006 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia when the Eagles beat the Falcons 24-17.

Vick, who is a three-time Pro Bowler, was conditionally reinstated by the NFL and he can practice and play in the final two pre-season games. He could play as early as week six unless NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decides to fully reinstate him earlier.

The Eagles play the Jaguars in week three of the pre-season and the Jets in week four. In the regular season, the Eagles play in Oakland in week six and in Washington week seven. Their first home game after week six would be against the Giants on November 1st.

Eagles sign first-rounder Maclin

ALAMO BOWL

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Jeremy Maclin, their first-round pick, to a five-year contract. The contract is worth $15.5 million, of which $9.5 million is guaranteed.

Maclin was the third receiver drafted behind Darrius Heyward-Bey (Oakland) and Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech). However, most rated Maclin as the second-best receiver in the draft behind Crabtree.

The Eagles are hoping that Maclin will work out better than the last receiver they drafted in the first round -- Freddie "The People's Champ" Mitchell, who was drafted in 2001.

But Eagles QB Donovan McNabb suggests caution with expectations for Maclin.

"He's a rookie. You all act like he's been in the league for five or six years," McNabb said. "You don't know what he's going to do anyway. All we ask of him is to catch the ball and get up field and score. That's all we ask. He's a receiver."

At Missouri, Maclin caught 182 passes for 2,315 yards in two seasons while rushing for an additional 668 yards. He returned five kicks (three punts - two kickoffs) for scores there.

R.I.P. Jim Johnson

NFL: DEC 21 Eagles at Redskins

After recently stepping down as Eagles defensive coordinator, Jim Johnson has lost his fight with cancer today.

He has passed away at 68 years old and he spent the past 22 years as an NFL assistant coach.

Johnson, who was known for his agressive style of defense, was one of the best defensive coordinators in the game.

Since 2000, the Eagles' defense under Johnson ranked fourth in fewest points allowed (17.7 per game) and second in sacks (390). Under Johnson, the Eagles have sent 26 defensive players to the Pro Bowl.

Rest in peace.

Brian Westbrook is "ahead of schedule"

NFC Championship: Philadelphia Eagles v Arizona Cardinals

Eagles president Joe Banner expects running back Brian Westbrook to be ready for the season opener against the Carolina Panthers, according to Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"We're very optimistic about Westbrook," Banner said. "He's doing great. He's ahead of schedule, but we're still going to be very conservative with him."

Therefore, the Eagles are very unlikely to add a running back before camp or the start of the season.

"We're a little inexperienced, but at this point at running back we think we have some real quality people there," Banner said. "We expect that we're going to go into camp and the guys we have are going to put us in a good position to be successful. Running back is one of those positions where younger players can step in and have success."

The Eagles drafted LeSean McCoy in the second round this year. McCoy was the fourth running back drafted behind Denver's Knowshon Moreno, Indianapolis' Donald Brown and Arizona's Chris "Beanie" Wells.

Other backs on the roster include Lorenzo Booker, Kyle Eckel and Leonard Weaver.

Donovan McNabb's contract re-worked

The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Donovan McNabb re-worked his contract although extra years were not included, per Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Before the contract was re-worked, McNabb was due a salary of $9.2 million this season and $10 million in 2010, but the money wasn't guaranteed.

The details of the restructuring wasn't known and there is a press conference scheduled at 10 a.m. and McNabb and coach Andy Reid will be present.

"We are thrilled that this all worked out," [team president Joe] Banner said in a statement released by the team. "He is a great football player, a great person, and someone who gives back to the community. We are lucky to have him in Philadelphia."

"The Philadelphia Eagles organization and the entire city of Philadelphia are fortunate to have a quarterback the caliber of Donovan McNabb," Reid said. "He has proven himself to be a talented player on the field, a caring member of the Philadelphia community, and a winner."

McNabb holds Eagles' all-time records in passing yards (29,320), touchdown passes (194), attempts (4,303), and completions (2,534) and is the winningest QB in franchise history (82 regular-season wins and seven playoff appearances).

Brian Westbrook to have ankle surgery Friday

Philadelphia Eagels running back Brian Westbrook will have ankle surgery tomorrow to remove bone spurs, per Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Although this is viewed as a "minor" surgery, this will be the Westbrook's second surgery of the off-season. Westbrook had surgery in February to clean out his knee.

"I would say running would be difficult for 6 weeks, minimum. Conservatively, 8 weeks. Could he run sooner? Sure. But he's got a lot of time right now to work," [former Eagles Dr. Art] Bartolozzi said.

The surgery will be performed by Mark Myerson in Baltimore - not Bartolozzi.

In Week 3 of the last season, Westbrook suffered a high ankle sprain. Westbrook missed Weeks 4 and 6 of the season.

The ankle surgery that Westbrook will have tomorrow "has nothing to do with the high ankle sprain," Westbrook's agent Todd France told ESPN.com.

In 2007, Westbrook had career highs in rushing yards (1333), receptions (90) and receiving yards (771). However, he had only 936 rushing yards, 54 receptions and 402 receiving yards in 2008 with the health limitations.

Westbrook turns 30 on September 2nd. Although he's one of the most versatile running backs in the league, backs typically decline quickly when they reach 30. Add in two off-season surgeries and a return to 2007 form is very unlikely.

Asante Samuel tweets his Super Bowl prediction

Per the Philadelphia Daily News, Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel is on Twitter. And he's making predictions.

We'll find out about his predictive abilities today when the Lakers play the Rockets in game seven. Samuel says "I see houston beating the lakers on sunday."

More importantly, a few days ago Samuel decided to raise Kevin Smith's playoff guarantee with a Super Bowl prediction. Samuel tweeted "this is about to be a superbowl winning season fareal."

I guess predicting a Super Bowl win is better than a pro athlete saying "damn, we're gonna suck this year." But isn't it better to let your play (and not your mouth) to do the talking?

Bo Scaife's Wikipedia page had him dealt to Philly

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the wikipedia page for Tennessee Titans tight end Bo Scaife had been changed during draft weekend.

Although his wikipedia page has since been fixed, it was reported that he was traded to Philadelphia for Reggie Brown and a third-round pick.

As those close to Scaife called to inquire, Scaife knew the rumors weren't true since he hadn't signed his franchise tender, which would have been required for the team to deal him. He has since signed his tender offer that guarantees him a 2009 salary of $4.46 million.

Who knew that not everything on the Internet was true?

Cole, Mikell and Patterson not concerned about their contracts

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown is unhappy with his contract although he says he's "going to be a pro, and play hard."

However, he previously mentioned that other Eagles' players were in the same boat as Brown was (unhappy with their contract situations). Specifically, two names that came up were linebacker Trent Cole and defensive tackle Mike Patterson.

Both Coles and Patterson as well as safety Quintin Mikell, who will replace Brian Dawkins as the Eagles' starting free safety, all say they are happy with their contracts according to Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
"I love the Eagles," Cole said after one of yesterday's minicamp practices. "I like playing for the Eagles. I'm going to keep playing and let the process take its course. I signed a contract with them, and I'm happy with my contract. People don't make decisions for you. You make your own decision. When I signed my contract, I signed my contract."

"It is a tough decision, but this league, it doesn't last forever," [Patterson] said. "You're not in the game for a long time, and it depends on how you look at it. I got hurt that year, so a lot of things went through my mind. I felt real thankful and I still feel real thankful about it."

"Obviously, everybody wants to feel important, but that's not for right now," Mikell said. "Right now, I have other stuff to worry about. I have a lot to worry about. We've got to get this defense together. We have a lot of new faces, and right now I'm focusing on jelling everybody together."
Considering the Eagles, who are notoriously cheap, said that they won't trade and/or negotiate a new contract for Brown, the other Eagles' players would gain nothing by publicly complaining about their pay.

Jim Johnson taking it "one (day and) camp at a time"

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, who had a recurrence of cancer in his spine, has been participating in the Eagles' three-day rookie mini-camp this weekend.
I’m feeling good,” Johnson said Saturday. “I’m still going through treatment. The biggest thing I’m trying to get now is the pain out of my back. I have some broken bones in the lower part. So that doesn’t allow me to be on my feet quite as much. But everything else, I feel fine.”
Johnson is not sure whether he'll coach from the sidelines or the coaching booth when the Eagles open the season.
“It’s too early to tell,” Johnson said. “I’m taking this one day at a time or one camp at a time. I’ll just keep working at it and as long as I can hold my work schedule, I’ll feel fine and we’ll just see how it goes.”
The Eagles open the season in Carolina on September 13th.

Sheldon Brown to show for mandatory camp Friday

Disgruntled Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown says that he'll attend the team's mandatory post-draft camp that begins on Friday. However, he still hopes that the Eagles will trade him.
"You never know," Brown said. "If somebody offers something they like, they might listen."

"I didn't become a villain all of a sudden," he said. "I'm a professional, and I've been in contact with Troy [Vincent]."
The Eagles have two voluntary sessions in June and it's not known whether Brown will show for either of those.

Brown is under contract until 2012 and the Eagles have stated that they have no intention of re-working his deal.

April 26, 2009

Patriots trade Ellis Hobbs to Eagles

The New England Patriots have traded cornerback Ellis Hobbs to the Philadelphia Eagles for two fifth-round picks. In turn, the Patriots have traded away those picks (the 137th and 141st picks overall).

In free agency, the Patriots signed cornerbacks Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden, who played for the Redskins and Lions, respectively, last season.

In the second round, the Patriots drafted UConn cornerback Darius Butler.

The Eagles have been dealing (or, technically, not dealing) with disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown, who has requested to be traded. The Eagles say they won't trade Brown, who is under contract until 2012.

Brown and Asante Samuel are the starting corners and Joselio Hanson is the nickelback. Hobbs provides the Eagles with some flexibility.

Hobbs is in the final year of his rookie contract and started all 16 games for the Patriots last season.

April 25, 2009

And with the 19th-overall pick...

The Philadelphia Eagles have selected WR Jeremy Maclin, WR from Missouri.

The Cleveland Browns have traded their first-round pick for a third time. The traded out of five to the Jets and out of 17th to the Bucs.

I'm surprised the Eagles didn't go after a bigger target at receiver or package their first-round pick in a bid for Anquan Boldin. However, I think Maclin is a good value from the perspective that he was selected 19th overall.

Detroit is on the clock. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

April 20, 2009

Eagles may pursue Anquan Boldin

The Philadelphia Eagles have used the draft to address their need for a starting left tackle by trading away one of their first-round picks (28th overall) to the Buffalo Bills. In addition, the Eagles sent a fourth-round pick and a pick next year for Jason Peters.

Unhappy with his contract situation in Buffalo, Peters was given a contract extension that makes his next six seasons worth $60 million.

With one first-rounder remaining for Saturday's draft, Eagles president Joe Banner hasn't ruled out using that pick to acquire a receiver such as Arizona Cardinal Anquan Boldin.

The Cards have indicated they will entertain trade offers for Boldin, but it is believed they are looking for at least a first- and third-round pick.
"There are teams that start the year with only one first-round draft pick and they've traded them," Banner said. "If we made another trade with a first-round draft pick, we'd just be in the same position as them. I think we'll do whatever we evaluate to be the best move with any of the available players. . . . Some of the evaluation is about the quality of what we have at certain positions."
If the Eagles don't pursue Boldin or another big-time receiver in the trade market, they'll likely draft a top running back with the 21st pick.

Sheldon Brown feels disrespected by Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown is pulling a Lito Sheppard, who was traded to the New York Jets this off-season.

Unhappy with his contract, which has four years remaining, Brown has asked the Eagles for a trade. However, the Eagles aren't going to renegotiate his contract, which Brown calls "a total lack of respect," nor trade him.
"Sheldon's comments under the circumstances actually serve to devalue him in a trade if we were willing to consider it; which we are not."
Brown, drafted in the second-round by the Eagles in 2002, has 380 career tackles, seven sacks and 14 interceptions.

At 30 years old and under contract until 2012, the Eagles have no reason to re-work his deal.

Philly judge hates the Cowboys

Per John Gonzalez of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Judge Patrick Dugan used his passion for football and hatred of the Dallas Cowboys in his campaign.

On fliers for his campaign, one of his accomplishments listed includes "HATES the Dallas Cowboys."
"I've hated the Dallas Cowboys my entire life. When the Eagles beat the Cowboys in 1981 for the NFC championship, I was there. I was there with 15 buddies at the top of the Vet. It was like we won the Super Bowl."
As a reminder to Dugan, the Philadelphia Eagles have never won a Super Bowl. However, his hated Cowboys have five rings. (Complete Super Bowl results history)

Jason Peters to Eagles for draft picks

Yesterday offensive tackle prospect Jason Smith of Baylor, who transitioned from TE to OT in 2006, visited with the Philadelphia Eagles.

And the Eagles starting left tackle for 2009 (and beyond) will be a player named Jason that was a converted TE...however, his last name isn't Smith.

The Buffalo Bills have traded Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters to the Eagles for three draft picks. The Bills will receive one of the Eagles' two first-round picks (28th overall) and their fourth-round pick in 2009 as well as an undisclosed pick in 2010.
Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “He is a powerful and athletic tackle and I have admired his play over the last few years on film. I have always believed that success in the National Football League is derived from the strong play of the offensive and defensive lines. This offseason we have added two young, top-flight offensive linemen in Jason and Stacy Andrews.”
The Eagles had been identified as the most logical trading partner for Peters since the Eagles lost Tra Thomas via free agency and they had the most overall draft picks (12) this year as well as two first-rounders.

Per the Buffalo News, right tackle Langston Walker will transition to left tackle and the Bills will try to use the 28th pick (acquired from Philly) to draft a right tackle such as Phil Loadholt of Oklahoma.

Per ESPN, Peters gets a four-year extension that will pay him $60 million over the next six seasons. Last year, Peters, who was unhappy with his existing contract, held out until two days before the season started and was fined a total of $600,000.

While Peters certainly won't be a holdout in 2009, will he live up to the size of his contract?

Baylor's Jason Smith visits with Eagles

Per Chris Steuber of Scout.com, Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith visited today with the Philadelphia Eagles, who hold the 21st and 28th overall picks in this year's draft.

General manager Tom Heckert expects the Eagles to know who will replace Tra Thomas at left tackle by this year's draft.

Thomas signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent this off-season.

If the Eagles want to draft Smith, who is a consensus top-five pick, they will need to move up in the draft. I expect Smith to go to the St. Louis Rams with the second overall pick in my mock draft.

Not only do the Eagles have two first-rounders, but they have the most picks (12) in this year's draft. The teams at the top of the draft (Detroit, St. Louis and Kansas City) are interested in trading down in the draft.

If the Eagles don't trade up to select a tackle (or trade for Bills disgruntled tackle Jason Peters), they will move either Todd Herremans or Shawn Andrews from guard to tackle

Eagles may try to trade up for a tackle

Per Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Eagles general manager Tom Heckert expects that the Eagles to know who their starting left tackle will be after the NFL draft (April 25-26).

The Eagles, who have two first-round picks (21st and 28th overall), might trade up in the draft to select a left tackle.

While they likely won't be able to trade into the top 5 to select Jason Smith of Baylor or Eugene Monroe of Virginia, they may be able to trade into the top 10 if they target Alabama's Andre Smith.

Heckert says that the controversy surrounding Andre Smith's situation at the NFL combine, where he decided at the last minute to not work out and then disappeared, has been overblown.
"You just have to look into [the problems]," Heckert said. "We've kind of made the combine such a media spectacle, which is fine, but what happened [in Indianapolis] really wasn't that big of a deal. The kid is a good kid. It was just something that happened and it snowballed. If the guy is a good player, he's still going to be a good player."
Speculation has linked the Eagles as a trade partner for Bills' tackle Jason Peters. However, Heckert says the Eagles haven't had any talks with Peters' agent.

If the Eagles don't trade up in the draft or trade for Peters, they would likely move either Todd Herremans or Shawn Andrews from guard to left tackle.

Is an Eagles' seat worth six felony charges?

Five teenagers broke into Lincoln Financial Field, where the Philadelphia Eagles play, and tried to steal a seat. Security cameras spotted them at 3 a.m. this morning.

They are being charged with six felony crimes including burglary and criminal trespass as well as one misdemeanor.

Perhaps they are just hoping to follow in the footsteps of their NFL heroes, who get arrested at a rate alarming enough that Pro Football Talk set up an NFL police blotter.

Quintin Demps won't try to be Brian Dawkins

When the Philadelphia Eagles allowed safety Brian Dawkins to leave via free agency, the move angered many Eagles' fans. Even one Eagles' employee lost his job after demonstrating his frustration through a Facebook post.

As you can imagine, Dawkins' replacement Quintin Demps expects the fans and locals to take some of their frustrations out on him. However, he intends to not take it personally and instead focus on what is within his control.
"I know I'm going to hear it," Quintin Demps said after a recent workout at the NovaCare Complex. "I'm already hearing it. Everybody wants to know how I'm going to handle replacing Dawk. But I don't look at it that way. Dawk was Dawk, and he was a great player. I'm me, and I'm just going to go out there and play the way I'm capable of. I can't worry about the rest of it."
While Demps isn't shooting to be Dawkins, coach Andy Reid says that's something that Demps should "shoot for."
"Quintin Demps is not Brian Dawkins, but he was able to see what Brian Dawkins did and how he went about his business," Reid said. "I think it's a great goal for Quintin Demps to shoot for. He should try to be as good as Brian was. To say he's there now, that's not fair because you're talking about one of the all-time greats."
Despite the pressure to succeed one of the most beloved players in Eagles' history, Demps is confident in his abilities.
"People are going to see a different player than they've ever seen before," he said. "They're going to see somebody with a lot of swagger, with a lot of intensity.

"This is what I've prepared all my life for. There's no pressure on me. I'm a football player, and I have a lot of confidence in my ability."
Demps, the Eagles' fourth-round pick last year, became more involved the Eagles defense on Thanksgiving, which was the first time the Eagles played the Cardinals.

In the last five games of the year, he had 12 of his 16 tackles and he had nine tackles in the Eagles' two playoff games.

Dawkins to give Leone Eagles-Broncos tickets

Fired Philadelphia Eagles part-time employee (and passionate fan) Dan Leone will be at Lincoln Field when the Denver Broncos come to Philadelphia to play the Eagles. However, Leone won't be working the game.

Instead, Broncos newly-signed safety Brian Dawkins will provide Leone with tickets to the game.

When the Eagles didn't re-sign Dawkins, Leone showed his frustration through his status on his Facebook page. He wrote: "Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver ... Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"

That Facebook post, which he deleted and admitted was a mistake, cost Leone his job.
"I thought it'd be a good gesture,'' Dawkins said, according to the Daily News. "Had I not ... signed with Denver, that guy would still have his job."
In a league where so many players don't seem to get it, Dawkins consistently shows he does. Classy move.

Nick Cole signs tender by Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles guard Nick Cole, who was undrafted in 2006, signed his one-year tender as a restricted free agent and will earn $1.545 million in 2009.

Due to injuries on the Eagles' offensive line, Cole started the last five regular-season games and all three post-season games for the Eagles in 2008.

He's expected to either enter as a starter in 2009 or be the top reserve on the Eagles' O-line.

The undrafted Hank Baskett, who joined the Eagles in 2006 as well, was also offered a one-year tender with the Eagles. Although he hasn't signed the tender yet, he is expected to do so.

March 20, 2009

Eagles sign Leonard Weaver

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms with fullback Leonard Weaver on a one-year contract.
"When I looked at Philly, I looked at the type of offense they run," Weaver said via conference call. "In free agency, a lot of the guys look at the money. For me, that wasn't really the case. I looked at more of the opportunity. I hope I get a chance to catch passes, but they called me to do some blocking and that's exactly what I'm expected to do. I looked at the offense and it's basically the same offense Mike Holmgren ran in Seattle. I liked the opportunities there, so I took a chance."
Dan Klecko, who started at fullback for the Eagles last year, will make the transition back to the defensive line.

Last year, Weaver carried the ball 30 times for 130 yards and caught 20 passes for 222 yards.

Correll Buckhalter named in drug case

Styles N. Beckles is on trial in Pennsylvania for drug charges. [Can't you just picture a drug dealer named "Styles"? I picture something like this.]

In any event, the prosecutor in the case said that Styles had sold drugs to pro athletes including RB Correll Buckhalter, who signed with the Denver Broncos this off-season. Buckhalter is expected to start for the Broncos, who have also signed J.J. Arrington and Lamont Jordan this off-season.

Through his agent, Buckhalter has denied that he is a customer of Styles.
"I spoke to Correll about it and there's no validity to it as far as he's concerned," Buchhalter's agent J.R. Rickert said. "I don't know the circumstances as to how or why he dropped his name. All I know is I asked Correll, 'Are you involved in this at all?' And he said, 'Nope, there's no validity to it.' "
I don't know whether Buckhalter bought or didn't buy drugs from Styles. But considering the amount of players that have been busted for drugs in the NFL, I'm not sure that the phrase "nope, there's no validity to it" means so matter-of-factly that "nope, there's no validity to it."

March 09, 2009

Jags sign LT Tra Thomas

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed free-agent LT Tra Thomas, who spent the past 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Does the 34-year-old have another 9 years to play?
"I have several years left in the tank," Thomas said. "I take good care of myself. I'm always in the weight room training. ... I put in a goal to play 20 years, so I want to come in and play as long as I possibly can. I feel like if I continue to take care of myself it can definitely happen."
Thomas, who was selected by the Eagles with the 11th overall pick in 1996, has missed only 8 games in his 11 seasons.

The Jaguars GM Gene Smith expects Thomas to start at LT to replace Khalif Barnes, who is now a free agent. However, Smith didn't rule out the possibility of the Jags signing a tackle in the draft with the 8th overall pick.

Eagles' Employee Fired for Facebook Post

A lot of Philadelphia Eagles fans were upset devastated to see the Eagles allow Brian Dawkins to walk via free agency. Dawkins, who was the "heart and soul" of the team, signed a five-year contract with the Denver Broncos.

One of the devastated die-hard fans, who also happened to be an Eagles employee, showed his frustration with his favorite team (and employer) through his account on Facebook, the social-networking site. Per John Gonzalez of the Philadelphia Inquirer, this is what Dan Leone, who was the Eagles' "west gate chief," wrote:
"Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver. . .Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"
Should Leone, who suffers from transverse myelitis (neurological disorder), have posted these comments about his employer? Even Leone says no.
"I shouldn't have put it up there," Leone said. "I was ticked off, and I let my emotions go, but I didn't offend any one person or target a specific individual. I was just upset that we lost such a great guy. Dawkins was one of my favorite players. I made a mistake."
Per the Philadelphia Inquirer, Leone was contacted by Leonard Bonacci, director of event operations, who said that he and Leone needed to talk about his Facebook post.

According to Leone, a face-to-face meeting never took place. Instead, he was fired two days later over the phone by Rachel Vitagliano, guest services manager.
"I tried putting in my case to Rachel," Leone said. "I told her I worked there for six years. I did whatever they asked. I only missed one Eagles game the entire time I worked there, and that was because I'm a Mummer. I told her it was my dream to work for the Eagles and that I'd never do anything like that again."

"I apologized for it," Leone said. "I apologized 20 million times. I never bad-mouthed the organization before. I made one mistake and they terminate me? And they couldn't even bring me into the office to talk to me? They had to do it over the phone? At least look me in the eye. To get done dirty like this, I can't believe it. I'm devastated."
Leone is "not holding any grudges" and says he would return if the Eagles were to ask. But should the Eagles have fired Leone in the first place? No. While he made a mistake, he should've been given a second chance.

But his story should be a lesson to us all. When you think your comments posted online are "private," think twice.

And I think Texas Tech coach Mike Leach might be on to something when said he would say he "loves Lubbock every single press conference." (Leach had some sticky negotiations regarding his contract extension with Texas Tech last month.)

So, as an employee of a Dutch-based company (day job), I'd like to go on the record and say that "I love Amsterdam."

Eagles sign Stacy Andrews

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Stacy Andrews to a 6-year contract.

Andrews suffered a torn ACL against the Browns on December 21st and had surgery on January 7th. Initially he was expected to be out until training camp, but he is ahead of schedule and expects to be ready for mini-camp in June.

Stacy joins his brother Shawn, who was a no-show at training camp last year as he battled depression. Before last season, Shawn Andrews made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2007.
“I am very excited," Stacy Andrews said. "We always talked about possibly playing together. Now we have the chance. It’s unreal; I’m looking forward to it."
Stacy Andrews was a 4th-round draft pick out of Mississippi, where he started playing football in his junior year. He's played for the Bengals for the past 5 years.

Brian Dawkins - Eagles' loss is Broncos' gain

The Denver Broncos have been active in free agency so far.

They have signed Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington to bolster a backfield that was riddled with injuries in 2008. Coach Josh McDaniels, who was OC in New England last year, signed WR Jabar Gaffney and long-snapper Lonie Paxon, who were also in New England last year.

Perhaps the biggest move is signing safety Brian Dawkins, who spent the past 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dawkins has had a great career and as Eagles coach Andy Reid says, he is "one of all-time greats to play his position." While he definitely isn't playing at the same level as he did during the peak of his career, he can still play at a high level. Dawkins made the NFC Pro Bowl squad and was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Month in December.

More importantly, Dawkins brings heart to a defense that struggled last year.

The Broncos' defense ranked 29th in the league in total defense (374.6 ypg allowed) and 30th in scoring defense (28.0 ppg).

Lito Sheppard to Jets for draft picks

The Philadelphia Eagles have finally traded disgruntled CB Lito Sheppard, who had been seeking to be traded since last year.

The Eagles will send Sheppard to the NY Jets in return for a pair of draft picks. The Eagles will get a 5th-round pick this year as well as a conditional pick in 2010. The conditional pick will be a 2nd-, 3rd- or 4th-rounder.

Sheppard, drafted in the 1st-round by the Eagles in 2002, had 18 career interceptions. He had 1 interception last year, but had his career high in 2006 with 6 INTs in 13 games.

The Jets visited with CB Corey Ivy yesterday and will visit with safety Jim Leonhard today. Both Ivy and Leonhard played for coach Rex Ryan last year in Baltimore as did Bart Scott, whom the Jets signed to a 6-year deal yesterday.

Donovan McNabb waiting for more pieces

According to ESPN, Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb and his agent (Fletcher Smith) met with coach Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner before the start of the NFL scouting combine. In that meeting, they "cleared the air" about McNabb's benching against the Baltimore Ravens and held preliminary talks on a contract extension.

With the exception of Terrell Owens, McNabb hasn't had any big-time WRs during his Eagles' tenure. And per the ESPN report, McNabb is going to take a wait-and-see approach to contract negotiations dependent upon the team's upgrades in the off-season.

McNabb currently has 2 more years on his contract and will turn 33 in November.

In his 10 seasons with the Eagles, McNabb has led the Eagles to 5 NFC Championship games including this year's loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He is 1-4 in championship games.

In his career, he has thrown for 29,320 yards, 194 TDs and 90 INTs. In 2008, he broke his own single-season passing yards (3,916) team record.

Eagles, Hanson agree to 5-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles have reached agreement on a 5-year deal with CB Joselio Hanson that is worth $21 million, $6.4 million of which is guaranteed.

While Hanson could have been a starter on some other teams, the nickel CB decided to stay in the City of Brotherly Love.
"We are happy to keep Joselio in Philadelphia with a long-term contract," said head coach Andy Reid. "He's become a productive and valuable player on defense for us over the last few years, especially in nickel situations. Good cornerbacks are certainly a valuable commodity in this league and Joselio definitely fits that category."
Since last year, Lito Sheppard has wanted to be traded. Re-signing Hanson, who was due to become a free agent on Feb. 27th, provides the team more flexibility to work out a deal.

February 18, 2009

L.J. Smith done in Philly?

Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles placed their franchise tag on TE L.J. Smith. This year, they say they won't use their franchise tag.

Smith, who earned the average salary of the top 5 TEs in the game (because he was franchised), did not play like one of the 5 TEs in 2008.

Smith finished the season with 37 receptions for 298 yards and 3 TDs.

With Brent Celek's post-season performance (19 catches, 151 yards and 3 TDs in 3 games), Smith is expendable and unlikely to be back with the Eagles in 2009.

"FredEx" gets pot delivered by FedEx

Earlier in the week, former Philadelphia Eagles WR Freddie Mitchell, the "bust" that called himself the People's Champ and FredEx among others, was busted for allegedly signing for 7 pounds of marijuana that was shipped via FedEx.

Technically, Mitchell was handcuffed but not arrested.
"If Freddie's name were on it," [Mitchell's lawyer John] Liguori said, "he'd be sitting in jail."
The FedEx guy first attempted to deliver the package to Mitchell's grandmother, but she thought the package was for her grandson.

Mitchell, who supposedly thought the package might contain "supplies" for his restaurant, signed for the package. Mitchell is calling it a "case of mistaken identity."

Drafted in the 1st-round of the 2001 NFL draft by the Eagles, Mitchell finished his career with 90 receptions and 1263 yards and 5 TDs.

Eagles need bigger WR than TJ?

Rich Hoffman of the Philadelphia Daily News believes the Philadelphia Eagles need a WR that is a big target more than it needs a big-name WR such as T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Recently Houshmandzadeh said that the Eagles-Bengals game last November was just him ..."giving Andy Reid...an interview in person."

Hoffman argues that the Eagles the Eagles scored plenty of points (26 ppg - 6th in the NFL), but struggled in situations.

So with smallish WRs like Kevin Curtis and DeSean Jackson, they would benefit more with a compliment like Reggie Williams (6'4"), Bryant Johnson (6'3"), Demetrius Williams (6'2") or Malcolm Floyd (6'5") to catch fades in the corner of the endzone. Those 4 WRs are either restricted or unrestricted free agents this off-season.

Eagles Runyan out 4-6 months

Philadelphia Eagles RT Jon Runyan, who had microfracture surgery, will be on crutches for 8 weeks and miss from 4-6 months. We are 5 1/2 months away from the start of training camp.
"I think there's enough of a track record out there that it's not going to totally kill me," said Runyan. "The doctor says I should be as good as new. But I'm not going to be able to prove it until time to play."
Runyan has played in 192 consecutive games. The question is where will he play his 193rd.

Donovan McNabb throws defense under bus

Did anyone see that bus? Donovan McNabb did. Because he threw his teammates under it.

When he was on WIP-AM 610, the Philadelphia Eagles QB blamed the defense for the Eagles' loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship game.
"We were up, 25-24," McNabb said. Then, in case people missed it the first time, he repeated it for good measure. "We were up, 25-24. [The Cardinals] drove down 72 yards by running the ball - probably, what, eight times? And it reminded me so much of [the NFC championship game in] St. Louis where, coming back in that second half, they ran the ball nine times with Marshall Faulk to keep our offense off the field. Because they were terrified of us going back out and scoring more points."
Former Eagles DE Hugh Douglas says that McNabb's comments are a big deal.
"Some people will say it's not a big deal, but it is," Douglas said.

"When you break that team code, it hits home. When you call someone your teammate, you're calling them your brother. Be loyal to your teammates. It's easy to point fingers. Brian Dawkins is a team player. He would never do that."
And as Jeremiah Trotter points out, McNabb hasn't exactly shone in big games.
[McNabb] hasn't done anything in big games. When you look at championship games, the Super Bowl - he hasn't produced in big games. [snip] He had plenty of time to go down the field and score and tie that thing up but he didn't get it done.
Granted McNabb led the team from a 24-6 halftime deficit to take the lead with nearly 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. But the QB, as team leader, should never throw his teammates under the bus.

Brian Westbrook might need surgery

Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook might need to have surgery on his knee.
"I think they're running medical tests to determine the source of the irritation," the source said. "If he does need surgery, it's only going to be minor and he may not need it at all. We know he will rest and work hard in the off-season and we're optimistic he'll come back healthy."
Westbrook will turn 30 before the start of the season, but Westbrook has had a total of 1809 career touches over 7 seasons. That is an average of only 258 per season.

But as Marshall Faulk points out, "you can't show me a 30-year-old man who was the same as he was at 20."

Westbrook had his least productive year since being more featured in the Eagles' offense in 2006.
2006: 240 rushes, 1217 yards, 7 TDs - 77 receptions, 699 yards, 4 TDs
2007: 278 rushes, 1333 yards, 7 TDs - 90 receptions, 771 yards, 5 TDs
2008: 233 rushes, 936 yards, 9 TDs - 54 receptions, 402 yards, 5 TDs
The Eagles have the 21st and 28th pick in the first round. (See first-round draft order.)

There are 3 RBs expected to be selected in the first round: Knowshon Moreno of Georgia, Chris "Beanie" Wells of Ohio State and LeSean McCoy of Pittsburgh. Moreno and Wells will likely be off the board when the Eagles pick first. More likely, the Eagles will look to add RB depth in a later round.

Eagles Brian Dawkins wants to be back in Philly

The Philadelphia Eagles hard-hitting free safety Brian Dawkins expects to be back in an Eagles uniform in 2009. According to Dawkins, coach Andy Reid told him there would be contract negotiations at some point.
"I think both sides want to get something done, and that's a positive thing going into any negotiations," Dawkins said.
Dawkins went on to say that he expects any contract to be the last for the 35-year old.
"I think I'm going to take it year to year," Dawkins said. "I think once you put a number on something, you mentally shut yourself down. Maybe you start to think you don't have to work out as hard because you only have one more year. I don't want to put myself mentally in that position."
Can the Eagles defense, which ranked 3rd in the NFL, be better in 2009? Dawkins believes so.
"Those young guys will learn, and they will take this, and they will be anxious to get back into training," Dawkins said. "...I do believe if we do what we're supposed to do this off-season, we will have a chance to get back in this position again. There are no guarantees, but that's just my feeling."
In 2008, Dawkins had 75 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 interception. The 2nd-round pick out of Clemson in 1996 (see complete Eagles draft history) has spent his entire 13-year career with the Eagles.

Eagles Jim Johnson has cancer recurrence

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has melanoma skin cancer in his spine and has begun radiation treatments.
“The original site was a skin cancer in 2001,” team trainer Rick Burkholder said. “Who knows where it tracked to from there, but his symptoms came from the spine. ...He’s got a bone tumor down in his low back and that’s what we have to attack right now.”
Johnson is the only Eagles coach not heading to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl so that he can get treatment.

Johnson isn't scheduled for surgery and is expected to continue coaching.

Hurricanes to make Whipple offensive coordinator?

According to a report in ESPN, the Miami Hurricanes are close to making Mark Whipple, an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, their next offensive coordinator.

In fact, the report makes it sound as though it's merely a formality as "human resource procedures" are the "only thing" keeping it from being official.

When Whipple becomes OC, he run will run an offense that is without QB Robert Marve, who was allowed to transfer out of the school last month.

Miami finished 7-5, 4-4 in the ACC. They were third in the conference in scoring (27.1 ppg) and 6th in total offense (326.0 ypg).

Eagles Pres. Joe Banner: McNabb, Reid to be back

In the past 8 seasons, the Philadelphia Eagles have reached the NFC Championship Game 5 times and the Super Bowl once.

Despite falling short this weekend, Eagles president Joe Banner says that coach Andy Reid and QB Donovan McNabb will be back for the 2009 season.

But, earlier this season, McNabb was benched at halftime against the Baltimore Ravens when the game was close. Kevin Kolb, the Eagles 2nd-round pick from last year, played as (or even more) poorly in the second half as did McNabb in the first half.

While Reid said that Kolb was never intended to be a permanent replacement (at least, this season), the only way to know for sure would have been if McNabb started the following week after a solid performance by Kolb.

McNabb, who played solidly from Cardinals game (1st after benching) to Cardinals game (NFC Championship Game), has expressed his desire to continue to air things out with management since the first game against the Cardinals.
"We just kind of aired some things out,'' said McNabb, whose contract that runs through 2010, but none of the remaining money is guaranteed. "I didn't get to what I wanted to talk about, but we will have that conversation with Andy as well as some other people in the organization. I think it is very important. I've been here 10 years and a conversation is needed.''
McNabb, who is signed through 2010, threw 14 TDs and 5 INTs in his final 8 games (5 regular-season and 3 playoffs). In those 8 games, he had a QB rating under 90 only twice.

Cardinals heading to Tampa

The Arizona Cardinals, who were the biggest longshot of the 12 playoff teams to win Super Bowl, have earned a berth to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. (See past Super Bowl winners.)

The Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 in today's NFC Championship Game. The Cardinals created 3 turnovers today and are +9 through the post-season.

Kurt Warner threw 4 TDs, 3 of which were to Larry Fitzgerald, who had 9 receptions for 152 yards.

The Cards will face the winner of the Steelers and Ravens game. The Super Bowl will be played in 2 weeks on February 1st in Tampa, FL.

The 3 finalists for the NFL's Man of the Year award were announced. They are Kurt Warner of the Cardinals, Brian Dawkins of the Eagles and Matt Birk of the Vikings.

Warner has created a partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Birk established the HIKE foundation to provide at-risk youth with educational opportunities.

The winner will be announced on Super Bowl Sunday (2/1).

NFL's Final Four set

The Pittsburgh Steelers ended the San Diego Chargers run (literally). The Chargers were limited to only 15 yards rushing on 12 carries and the Steelers won 35-24.

The Steelers will host the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game in what should be a defensive battle.

The Steelers swept the season series in 2 close contests: 23-20 in week 4 and 13-9 in week 15.

In the NFC Championship Game, the Arizona Cardinals will host the Philadelphia Eagles.

Eagles to face Cards in NFC Championship Game

Suffering the fate of the other 2 teams coming off a playoff bye, the New York Football Giants were beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles will travel to Arizona to play the Cardinals in the NFC Championship on Sunday.

The Giants beat the Eagles in yardage and time of possession, but the Eagles were more efficient on 3rd down and in the red zone.

The winner of the Steelers/Chargers game will host the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. The Steelers will surely end the home losing streak this weekend. Won't they?

Philadelphia Eagles continue hot streak

Perhaps Andy Reid knew what he was doing when he benched QB Donovan McNabb in the Baltimore Ravens game.

Since being benched, the Eagles are 5-1 counting today's playoff road victory over the Vikings. And McNabb has thrown 10 TDs and 2 INTs in those 6 games.

Next week, the Eagles will head up the NJ Turnpike to the Meadowlands to face the New York Football Giants. And the Arizona Cardinals will travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers.

The Eagles beat the Giants 20-14 in week 14 and the Giants will head into next week's game as losers of 3 of their last 4.

As the Eagles are peaking at the right time like the Giants did last year, are the Eagles this year's Giants?

Asante Samuel to start vs Vikings

Philadelphia Eagles CB Asante Samuel was listed as questionable on the injury report, but will start today against the Vikings.

The Eagles have the 3rd-ranked passing defense in the league allowing only 182.1 ypg. Their rush defense is 4th in the league allowing 92.3 ypg.

Since replacing Gus Frerotte in week 14, Tarvaris Jackson's lowest QB rating in a game was 88.5 and he has thrown 8 TDs and only 1 INT in the last 4 regular-season games. But having Samuel in the lineup with their other talented CBs allows Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson to really dial up the pressure on Jackson today.

Week 17 playoff scenarios

I can't recall an NFL season in recent memory with so many important matchups to decide entry into the post-season party like we have had last week and this week. Then again, I can't remember what I did 2 hours ago.

In any event, let's take a look at the current playoff picture. For simplicity sake, we ignore the possibility of a second tie this season.

Teams fall into 4 categories - playoff bound/seed locked, playoff bound/seed TBD, on playoff bubble and eliminated.

AFC Teams:

Playoff bound/seed locked:
Tennessee Titans (1), Pittsburgh Steelers (2), Indianapolis Colts (5)

Playoff bound/seed TBD:
none

On playoff bubble:
Miami Dolphins: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Jets. A Dolphins' loss eliminates them from the playoffs.

New England Patriots: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Bills and Jets win over Dolphins. Bill Belichick stopped short of saying he'd root for the Jets, but that's what he will be doing. If the Dolphins and Pats win, the Pats will get the 6 seed with a Ravens' loss.

New York Jets: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Dolphins and Pats' loss to Buffalo. Loss to Dolphins eliminates Jets' hopes. If the Jets and Pats win, the Jets will get the 6 seed if the Ravens lose.

Baltimore Ravens: Clinch 6 seed with a win over Jaguars or a Patriots loss to Buffalo and a Jets loss to Dolphins.

Denver Broncos: Win AFC West and clinch 4 seed with win over Chargers. Loss eliminates Broncos.

San Diego Chargers: same as Denver Broncos.

Eliminated:
Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders

Donovan McNabb doesn't control his own fate

Donovan McNabb has passed for 3,741 yards this season. The franchise record, set by McNabb in 2004, is 3,875 yards. 2004 was the first season that T.O. played in Philly.

Asked about his performance, McNabb responded "I think I've played great." As Ray Parrillo of the Inquirer points out, McNabb's view of himself may frustrate Eagles' fans.

He points out that McNabb has lit up NFC West defenses (as has every other QB), but struggled vs NFC East defenses. McNabb averaged 312 passing yards/game against NFC West opponents and 218 passing ypg.

And if McNabb breaks his franchise record, my guess is most people will still remember 2008 as the year he didn't know about the possibility of a tie rather than the passing yardage record. And perhaps his benching against the Ravens would be the next thing most remember about McNabb this season.

After Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Redskins, the Eagles no longer control their own destiny. They need to beat the Cowboys and then hope the Bucs lose to the Raiders. (Or, I should say the other way around - they need to hope the Raiders beat the Bucs at 1 p.m. and then take care of business at 4 p.m.) But can the Bucs lose 4 straight with the 4th being to the Raiders? Plus the Eagles need the Vikings or Bears to lose.

McNabb also said he hopes to be back in Philly next season.
"I expect to be here, and I will play this game not like it's my last," he said.

"Everybody wants a new deal. Don't you? But that's not why we're playing this game. We're playing this game to win. and things happen. I've been answering this question the last couple of years, so I guess to eliminate that part of it, hopefully that will happen, but we'll see."
McNabb's fate is similar to his team's. Both need to perform well, but that neither control their own fate. McNabb's status will be one of the biggest off-season stories in 2009.

NFC Playoff Picture

Earlier in the week, we took a look at the AFC playoff picture. Since then, the Colts have beaten the Jaguars to clinch the 5 seed in the AFC. That means that the Ravens and the non-division winners out of the Jets, Patriots and Dolphins will battle it out for the 6th seed in the AFC.

Let's shift our focus to the NFC. With 2 weeks to play, here are the current seedings in the NFC:
1. New York Giants (11-3)
2. Carolina Panthers (11-3)
3. Minnesota Vikings (9-5)
4. Arizona Cardinals (8-6)
5. Dallas Cowboys (9-5)
6. Atlanta Falcons (9-5)
NFC East:

New York Giants (11-3): With a win tomorrow night against the Panthers, the Giants lock up home-field advantage. If the Giants lose and the Vikings lose to the Falcons, the Giants will clinch the #2 seed and first-round bye. If the Giants lose and the Vikings win, the teams face off in Minnesota next week for the #2 seed.

Dallas Cowboys (9-5): The Cowboys are in as the 5 seed if they win out against the Ravens and Eagles. The Falcons and Bucs have identical records to the Cowboys and the Eagles trail by a half-game. The Bears trail the Cowboys by one game.

Philadelphia Eagles (8-5-1): The Eagles trail the Cowboys, Falcons and Bucs by a half-game. They face the Cowboys next week. If they win out, they are in provided that the Falcons and/or Bucs lose (or tie) at least one of their remaining 2 games.

Washington Redskins (7-7): While the Redskins are not mathematically-eliminated, they need much help with 2 weeks remaining. They need the Eagles, Bucs and Falcons to all lose their remaining games and the Bears to lose at least 1 game and win their 2 remaining games.

Reggie Brown - upset about playing status

Eagles WR Reggie Brown isn't happy that he hasn't dressed in the past couple of weeks. Asked why other WRs are ahead of him and what he needs to do to get on coach Andy Reid's good graces, here's what Brown said:
"I don't know. That's a question you need to ask Reid, then you can come back down here and tell me, because I don't know. I don't get answers. I'm in the dark right now. I've tried to. I don't get answers."

"Show them what? To get on the field? Before I got hurt, I came back out as the leading receiver in two games. If that's not enough to show them, then I can't do more than I'm already doing. It's their decision whether or not to play me. It's just my decision whether or not to go out there and do my best to help this team make it to the playoffs, and that's what I'm going to do."
Brown had 61 receptions for 780 yards in 2007. This year, he has 13 receptions for 192 yards in the 8 games he has played. 10 of those receptions came in weeks 4 and 5.

Brown is 10th on team in receptions and 6th among WRs. Rookie DeSean Jackson leads the team in receptions with 58.

Hank Baskett will miss Sunday's game against the Redskins so Baskett will dress. How much he plays (and how happy/unhappy he is about it) is another story.

A look at the NFC playoff picture
