Chris Johnson goes over 2,000 yards

Heading into today's game, Titans running back Chris Johnson needed 128 rushing yards to become the sixth player in NFL history to reach the 2,000-yard milestone and 233 yards to tie Eric Dickerson's single-season record.

And for an 11th consecutive game, Johnson rushed for over 100 yards to go over 2,000 yards. He finished with 134 yards in today's win over Seattle and with 2,006 for the season.

It means a lot,’’ said Johnson, per The Tennessean. “I’m not really tired. I’m just happy about getting to 2,000 yards and the victory.’’

While he fell short of the single-season rushing record, Johnson broke Marshall Faulk's yards-from-scrimmage record and Earl Campbell's franchise rushing record.

In 2010, "Every Coach's Dream" is likely to be the top overall pick in fantasy football drafts in the majority of leagues.

Fantasy Football: Week 17 RB rankings

While most fantasy football leagues conduct their championship game in week 16, some leagues still hold their title game in week 17. That creates the extra challenge of trying to forecast playing time in addition to evaluating matchups.

That said, here are our top five fantasy running backs for week 17:

1. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Seahawks): No player will be more watched in week 17 than "Every Coach's Dream." Johnson is 128 yards shy of 2,000 and 233 yards shy of Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105. With a streak of ten straight games of 100+ yards, 128 seems like a sure thing. With a season-high performance of 228, the single-season record seems like a possible stretch goal. In the past 10 games, Johnson has also scored 11 touchdowns.

2. Ray Rice, Ravens (at Raiders): Rice was one of the guys that I expected to have a breakout year and I suggested you target him in your fantasy football draft in the pre-season. Now in a meaningful win-and-you're-in game against the run-friendly Raiders should allow Rice to cap his breakout season. No team has allowed more rushing touchdowns than the Raiders, who have allowed 21 rushing scores.

3. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (at Browns): Pocket Hercules has a nose for the endzone reaching pay dirt 16 times this season. Of course, his most famous TD was the one that he didn't score. But only Adrian Peterson has more rushing TDs (17) than Jones-Drew (15) has. Although the Browns have finished strong with their three-game winning streak, they have allowed the second-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. Despite the Jaguars chances of making the playoffs being remote due to the need of help/tie-breakers, there is plenty of incentive to give MJD a healthy dose of touches in week 17.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (vs Giants): The Vikings have stumbled to the regular-season finish line losing three of their final four games. With another loss, there's a good chance that the Vikings could enter the playoffs without a bye. In other words, they have incentive to play AD and the rest of the Vikings offensive (and defensive) starters. Peterson leads the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns and only two teams have allowed more rushing touchdowns than the Giants, who gave up a 206-yard game against Carolina's Jonathan Stewart last week.

5. Frank Gore, 49ers (at Rams): Along with the Raiders, no team has allowed more rushing touchdowns than the Rams (21). And the Rams have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. In the past three weeks, Gore has 345 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also has nine receptions for 110 yards during that span. If the one-win Rams fall behind early, Gore should be the recipient of plenty of carries and generate a ton of fantasy points.

Chargers clinch bye, Johnson needs 128 for 2000

In their Christmas night win over the Titans, the Chargers clinched a first-round bye and the second seed in the AFC. In the process, they eliminated the Titans, who were one of seven teams tied at 7-7, from playoff contention.

Both LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles rushed for two touchdowns each.

Although he still hasn't rushed for 100 yards in any game this season, LT now has 11 rushing touchdowns in his past nine games.

Meanwhile, Chris Johnson turned in his tenth straight 100+ yard performance as he rushed for 142 yards and is only 128 yards shy of 2,000. He trails Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record by 233 yards.

While it seems unlikely that he'll break the record, Johnson's season high is 228 yards (11/1 vs Jacksonville).

Next week, the Titans face the Seahawks, who rank 13th in the NFL in rushing yards per game allowed (106.4 ypg).

The Weekly Blitz - Week 13

Every week, I pick three NFL games against the spread (ATS) and here are my week 13 picks:

Patriots -4.5 (over Dolphins): The Patriots are coming off a tough loss on a short week. And they are on the road against a division rival. The Saints held Tom Brady and the Patriots to no passing scores. But the Dolphins are coming off a disappointing loss as well against the Bills. Brady should bounce back against the league's 23rd-ranked pass defense. Meanwhile Laurence Maroney has scored a rushing TD (or two) in six consecutive games. The last time the Patriots lost two consecutive games was in November 2006.

Titans +6.5 (over Colts): I'm not necessarily calling for an outright upset here (although I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen). With the exception of a meaningless week 17 game last year, here are the point differentials in games Vince Young has started against the Colts: -1, +3, -2, +6. There's nothing wrong with winning close games, especially when you're 11-0, but the Colts have engineered come-from-behind victories in the fourth quarter in their past five games. With Chris Johnson running all over opponents (six straight games with 125+ yards), the Colts playing close games recently and the historical trend of close games in this series, give me the points.

Vikings -3.0 (over Cardinals): The Vikings are as complete as any team in football. With five weeks to go, they rank fifth in total offense and eighth in total defense. And despite all the will-he-or-won't-he-return drama, Brett Favre is a legitmate MVP contender. He's tied with Peyton Manning for second in TD passes (24) behind Drew Brees (27), but Favre has thrown only three interceptions. I expect Kurt Warner to return this week, but the Cardinals' pass offense is considerably less explosive with Matt Leinart under center.

Fantasy Football: Top 50 WRs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 wide receivers for week 13:

1. Randy Moss, Patriots (at Dolphins): In his first matchup against the Dolphins, who rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed (233 ypg), Moss had six receptions for 147 yards and one TD. On the season, Moss leads the NFL in receiving yards (992) and is only one behind the leaders in TD receptions (eight). After getting their ass whooped on prime-time TV, expect the Patriots, Tom Brady, Moss & Co. to come out swinging.

2. Andre Johnson, Texans (at Jaguars): Johnson is one of the league's most complete receivers and perhaps the most underrated. This week, Johnson gets a favorable matchup against the Jaguars, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to receivers this season. On the season, Johnson ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (945).

3. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals (vs Vikings): The Vikings have been without Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, for the past five games. On the season, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. My expectation is for QB Kurt Warner to return from his concussion as Fitzgerald had his worst game of the season with Matt Leinart as QB last week. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (nine) including four TDs in the last three games in which Warner has played.

4. Reggie Wayne, Colts (vs Titans): Wayne is second in receptions (79), second in receiving yards (987) and tied for first in touchdowns (nine) in the league. In addition to their improvements with Vince Young under center, the Titans have improved on the defensive side of the ball as they are healthier now. Only the Lions (27) have allowed more receiving touchdowns than the Titans (25) on the season. During their five-game winning streak, however, the Titans have allowed only the 18th-most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (at Cardinals): In three of his past six games, Rice has 136 receiving yards or more including a game with 201yards. With the exception of his game at Green Bay, Rice has had 89 yards or more in five of his past six. Favre and Rice have built chemistry quickly and they have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to receivers this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 40 RBs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 running backs for week 13:

1. Thomas Jones, Jets (at Bills): The first time that Jones faced the Bills this season, he rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and only the Raiders have allowed more rushing TDs than the Bills (16). Since the Jets want QB Mark Sanchez to air it out less and less (his attempts have gone from 35 to 30 to 21 to 17), Jones better bring his lunch-pail tonight.

2. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Colts): As well as Johnson has played in the past six weeks (125+ rushing yards every week), you can consider Johnson 1(a) -- not #2 -- in this week's rankings. During their five-game winning streak, Johnson has rushed for seven touchdowns. Although the Colts have a middle-of-the-pack run defense on the season, they've given up the 11th-most fantasy points to opposing RBs in the past three weeks.

3. DeAngelo Williams, Panthers (vs Buccaneers): DeAngelo has cooled off a bit with no touchdowns in the past three weeks and only one 100-yard game during that span. The first time that Williams faced the Buccaneers this season, he carried the ball 30 times for 152 yards and two scores. Expect more of the same against the league's third-worst rush defense.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (at Cardinals): The Cardinals were the league's top-ranked run defense earlier in the season, but they have dropped to 14th in the NFL against the run (108.6 ypg allowed). In four of the past five weeks, they have allowed an opposing running back to eclipse the century mark. Surprisingly, Peterson has only three 100-yard games on the season, but he is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (vs Texans): MJD has rushed for more rushing touchdowns (13) than any other running back. (Of course, none of those are as famous as the TD that he didn't score.) That said, Jones-Drew faces a Texans run defense that turned itself around after the first three weeks. In week 3, however, MJD rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Football: Top 25 QBs for Week 13

It's time to put up or shut up. If you haven't yet clinched a playoff berth in your fantasy league, it likely comes down to week 13 for you as most fantasy leagues start their playoffs in week 14.

And to paraphrase Bill Parcells, this is why you buy those cheat sheets, do those mock drafts, etc. -- to get into (and win in) the playoffs.

Here are my top 5 quarterbacks for week 13:

1. Peyton Manning, Colts (vs Titans): Manning is the only QB to average over 300 passing yards per game (310.5) and is second in passing touchdowns (24). While the Titans and their defense have been playing better lately, they have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns (25) this season.

2. Brett Favre, Vikings (at Cardinals): In his past four games, Favre has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, Arizona allows the fourth-most passing yards (258.3 ypg).

3. Drew Brees, Saints (at Redskins): Brees is coming off a five-TD performance against the Patriots in what was arguably the most important regular-season game in team history. Although this week's opponent (Washington) allows the fewest passing yards in the NFL (170.4 ypg), Brees and the Saints offense are firing on all cylinders right now.

4. Tom Brady, Patriots (at Dolphins): Brady failed to connect on a TD pass last week, but he had 332 passing yards against the Dolphins in their first match-up. With targets like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it's not likely that Brady goes TD-less in back-to-back games.

5. Philip Rivers, Chargers (at Chiefs): Rivers has posted three consecutive 100+ QB ratings and this week he faces the Browns, who have allowed the ninth-most passing yards (233.4 ypg) this season. In the past four games, Rivers has thrown eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Young leads Titans on 99-yard drive and into the playoff hunt

Very few people (if any) expected last year's top seed in the AFC to begin the season with an 0-6 record.

As many (i.e., few) expected the Titans to rattle off five consecutive wins after benching Kerry Collins in favor of Vince Young, who owner Bud Adams wanted to see inserted as the team's starter.

Five weeks later, however, it was Young's 99-yard drive to win the game against Arizona yesterday that has them only one game out of the wildcard with five games to go.

Young hit rookie receiver Kenny Britt, who was the Titans' first-round pick, on a 10-yard touchdown pass with time expiring for the game-winner.

"Once you see Vince scramble around, you never know if he's going to run it or throw it," Britt said. "You just have to stay alive, and that's what I did."

If you missed it, here's the drive:

As it stands, the Broncos (7-4) and Jaguars (6-5) currently hold the AFC wildcard spots. Tied with the Jags are the Steelers and Ravens.

But then it's the 5-6 Titans tied with the Texans, the Dolphins (their week 15 opponent) and the Jets.

With five games to go, the Titans play two tough teams -- Indianapolis (this week) and San Diego -- and two bad teams -- St. Louis and Seattle -- in addition to Miami.

Not to be forgotten, Titans RB Chris Johnson has been the league's best running back as he has seven rushing touchdowns during the team's winning streak. And he's rushed for 125+ yards in six consecutive games.

That said, VY passed for a career-high 387 yards and it was his arm that led this run-first team to victory. It's a QB not named Manning that's making coach Jeff Fisher "feel like a winner."

If the Titans, who are as hot as any team lately, can knock off the unbeaten Colts, who clinched the division yesterday, this team just may become the first 0-6 team to make the playoffs.

Whether the Titans make the playoffs or not, who would have expected that "playoffs" and "Titans" would be used in the same sentence this late in the season?

Brady throws five TDs in quarter, sets NFL record

Apparently, the Titans can give up points faster than I can type.

I just finished typing up a post about Brady's four passing touchdowns in one quarter. Well, I should have waited.

Brady has thrown a fifth touchdown in the quarter and a second to Wes Welker. Randy Moss has also caught two touchdowns and Kevin Faulk caught one touchdown as well.

For the half, Brady has completed 24 of 28 passes for 345 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. By comparison, Titans QB Kerry Collins has completed one of 10 passes for 15 yards and an interception.

It must be a huge shock for Collins each week to practice against the Titans secondary during the week and then face one that, um, doesn't suck in real games.

Brady has thrown 4 TDs in second quarter and driving

Boy, oh boy, are the Tennessee Titans efficient.

They've managed to give more points in one half than they normally give up in a full game and they normally give up a lot in a full game. Technically, "a lot" is defined as 27.8 points per game, which ranks 29th in the NFL through week 5.

There is still some time left in the second half, but the Titans are trailing 38-0. Patriots QB Tom Brady is 19 of 20 for 310 yards in the game. And he has thrown all four of his touchdowns in the second quarter.

As remarkable as the turnaround of the Miami Dolphins in 2008 (winning an extra ten games from the previous season's record), the Titans plummet is equally remarkable.

Last year, the Titans finished 13-3 and were the top playoff seed in the AFC and now there on the verge of an 0-6 start. And one thing is for sure. The Titans are getting better and better at losing.

Slow finishes for Collins a change from 2008

Titans QB Kerry Collins, who had a 90.9 QB rating in the 4th quarter in 2008, has struggled down the stretch so far in 2009. As pointed out by Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Collins' fourth-quarter passer rating in 2009 is only 25.9, which is second to last in the NFL.

The team, which scored 123 points in the 4th quarter in 2008, has only scored three points so far this year.

"The more intense the situation, the more Kerry lights up,'' tight end Alge Crumpler said. "He gets more lively in the huddle. He's like 'Let's shut these guys up. C'mon.' ''

"It is very important. A lot of games come down to the fourth quarter and making plays in the fourth quarter and we haven't done that — I haven't done that,'' said Collins. "It is something I am not concerned about, but I would definitely like to get better in the fourth quarter.''

Midway through the second quarter of the Jaguars game today, the Titans trail 17-3.

If the Titans don't let this one slip away, they're likely to need the 2008 version of Collins in the fourth quarter to avoid an 0-4 start.

2009 AFC South Prediction

Before tomorrow night's season opener between the Steelers and Titans, we will project the final standings and team records for all eight divisions as well as our post-season picks. Let's continue with the AFC South.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Prediction: 10-6 (Colts Schedule | Colts Forum)

The Colts enter the post-Tony Dungy era with a six-season streak of 12+ wins. However, new coach Jim Caldwell has been Peyton Manning's quarterbacks coach under Dungy since 2002. The Colts also lost the team's all-time receiver Marvin Harrison, who was released after not agreeing to a restructured contract. But they drafted RB Donald Brown (first round) and WR Austin Collie (fourth round) in this year's draft. With durability concerns for Joseph Addai, the incumbent starter at RB, the addition of Brown will either keep Addai fresh by reducing his workload or provide the Colts with protection should he miss a lot of time. Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark form one of the league's top WR-WR-TE trios. Two big concerns for the upcoming season are the offensive line's ability to protect Manning and the health of safety Bob Sanders, who has played more than six games in only two of his five seasons. Sanders' status for week one is still unclear.

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .512 winning percentage in 2008 (13th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Miami, at Arizona, at Tennessee, at Baltimore, vs Tennessee

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 37 (12.3 per season)

Nate Washington has right hamstring injury

Titans number one receiver Nate Washington, who was acquired via free agency this off-season, suffered an injury to his right hamstring during practice today, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.

He is scheduled for an MRI Monday night and therefore the extent of his injury is unknown.

I’ll say it is not season-ending,’’ coach Jeff Fisher said. “With the information I have right now I haven’t ruled him out for the opener. I don’t know. I don’t think Nate is going to practice tomorrow, so tomorrow is going to give the younger guys an opportunity to practice. I am not going to comment beyond that because I don’t know the nature of his injury.’’

“You don’t want anyone to go down, but especially a guy you brought in here to be basically your No.1 receiver,” [QB Kerry] Collins said. “Kenny is going to get an opportunity to get a lot of reps now and I think he’ll respond to it — he’s having a good camp. And guys like Paul Williams and Lavelle Hawkins, draft picks here, they need to step in and show us they can fill that role.’’

Last year, Washington had 40 receptions for 631 yards and three touchdowns with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the team's No. 3 receiver.

Vince Young - future Hall of Famer?

NFL: DEC 14 Titans at Texans

Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young made news long ago with his level of intelligence as evidenced by his Wonderlic score. And not in a good way.

Out of a possible score of 50, Young allegedly scored a six.

As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, Young is now using his intelligence (in other words, lack of it) to make a bold prediction about his future.

In an interview with Mark Warren of Esquire Magazine, Young says, "I don't know when I'll start again. But I will be the next black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. And I will be in the Hall of Fame."

Young, the third overall pick in 2006, has had a bumpy road since winning the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

He admitted after his rookie season that he considered calling it quits. Last September, he went missing and Titans coach Jeff Fisher used the word "suicidal" to describe Young's state of mind.

Earlier this off-season, Young issued an ultimatum saying that if he doesn't start that he wants out. He later tried to change his tune.

Now, he's predicting a Hall of Fame career? Are you serious? To me, it seems more likely that Young will be out of the league in three years.

Titans sign Kenny Britt to five-year deal

KENNY BRITT

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with Kenny Britt, their first-round pick, on a five-year contract believed to be worth a little more than $12 million, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.

Although he left Rutgers as a junior, Britt finished his career as the Big East leader in receiving yards (3,043) and as Rutgers' leader in receiving touchdowns (17).

Britt is expected to participate in the team's Sunday practice, which begins at 3:30 p.m.

"We're getting closer and closer to the ball game and still don't have a sense of his conditioning level," coach Jeff Fisher said. "When he does come in, we'll evaluate him."

The Titans kick off the pre-season with the Hall of Fame next weekend.

Steve McNair was shot and killed in double homicide

Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair was shot and killed in a double homicide in downtown Nashville, per News Channel 5 in Nashville.

The incident happened at 2nd South & Lea Ave.

McNair, who was selected third overall by the Houston Oilers in 1995, spent 13 years in the NFL and was one of the toughest players in the league. He spent his first 11 seasons with the Oilers/Titans franchise and his last two with the Ravens.

He was named co-MVP with Peyton Manning in 2003.

Vince Young can learn something from Kerry Collins

Despite all of his God-given abilities and hype entering the NFL, Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young has earned his way down the Titans' depth chart.

Meanwhile, starting QB Kerry Collins understands what it means to be a team leader.

“In the past, I’ve gone home for a week or so and not been around for a week or two at a time, but it’s more important for me to be here day in and day out,” Collins tells Terry McCormick of the Nashville City Paper. “The young guys, I think I’m more aware of how guys see me and how they view me as a leader of this team. I try to show them that I’m willing to do what it takes in the off-season to get ready for a season.”

“Usually this time of year, I go home and I wait till the very last minute to come back to camp, but I’m going to come back at least 10 days early and make sure that I’m here and doing all the things necessary to make sure I’m ready once camp starts,” Collins said.

Instead of whining, complaining, pouting or whatever, Young, who was named the 2006 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, should be observing and taking notes.

Chris Johnson, "Every Coach's Dream?"

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson has dumped his "Dash" nickname. He and fellow running back LenDale White were referred to as "Smash and Dash" last season.

Johnson gave himself the new nickname of "Every Coaches Dream," to which Jeff Fisher, his coach, responded, “Maybe with a few exceptions — playing the bongos … and getting hurt in the playoff game."

Fisher went on to say that, "I’m sure they’ll come up with something else,” Fisher said. “Dumb and Dumber or something.’’

White and Johnson are fighting like a married couple and Johnson tweeted, White doesn't "know how to accept that we are split up."

“You know how when you have a little brother and he gets beat up his whole life and then you grow up and are bigger than him and he can’t beat you up any more? I think that is what he is going through right now,’’ Johnson said. “LenDale is having a hard time handling it all.’’

"If there's no Smash, there's no Dash. If he's the coach's dream, I'm the opposing coach's nightmare,'' White said.

Vince Young wants to start...or else

Vince Young doesn’t know his role. Or, more precisely, he doesn’t want to accept it.

The Tennessee Titans QB that won the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 has given the Titans an ultimatum – start me or trade me.

“I definitely want to get back out there playing ball and picking up where I left off, winning games and having a good time with my teammates and with the fans,” Young told WMAR-TV, an ABC affiliate.

“At the same time, if them guys don’t want me to be in there, it’s time for me to make a career change for myself. Because the fact is I’m ready to play ball. If they’re not ready for me to play ball, then somebody is.”

Are you kidding me?

He demands a trade as though it’s his choice.

Young, drafted third overall by the Titans in 2006, has thrown 10 more interceptions (32) than touchdowns (22) in his career.

After his rookie season, he admitted that he had considered walking away from the game. After being booed by the hometown fans, he went missing, coach Jeff Fisher called the police and the word “suicidal” was used to describe Young’s state of mind.

With the amount of money remaining on his contract, his lack of emotional stability, intelligence (remember his Wonderlic score?) and lack of on-field production, his trade value is minimal. Throw in his or-else attitude and the other 31 teams (or, at least, the ones that need help at QB) would likely stay away even if the Titans tried to oblige him and trade him.

Young has two real choices - to know (and accept) his role as a back-up or to walk away like he contemplated before his sophomore season.

Ryan Fowler wants starting spot back

Tennessee Titans linebacker Ryan Fowler, who started at MLB in 2007, lost his starting spot last year to Stephen Tulloch.

Per Gary Estwick of The Tennessean, Fowler's lack of intensity and passion in off-season workouts opened the door for Tulloch. However, Fowler was refocused this past off-season and is "getting stronger...faster...more mobile," according to the team's strength and conditioning coach.

"More than anything, I got a little too complacent," Fowler told The Tennessean. "I thought that I could sort of coast through the offseason. Not to say I didn't train, but I probably didn't train with the same kind of passion that I had in the past."

Three months of the 2007 off-season, Fowler spent rehabbing two shoulder surgeries. However, it's refreshing to see an athlete be accountable and not place blame elsewhere.

And, unlike teammate Vince Young, Fowler handled his demotion well.

"He still maintained a completely professional attitude," [linebackers coach Dave] McGinnis said. "Worked extremely hard, anything he could do to help — he was on special teams, on extra linebacker packages, was very deep into the meetings. That to me is the sign of a consummate professional."

In 2007, Fowler, as a starter, had 53 tackles in 14 games. Last year, he had 28 tackles.

Cortland Finnegan collecting small-school shirts

Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl cornerback Cortland Finnegan is helping himself and his teammates to not forget their pasts.

According to Paul Kuharsky of ESPN, Finnegan, who played his college ball at Samford, is buying up t-shirts of the small schools for whom his teammates played.

Most recently, Finnegan purchased Tiffin University t-shirts that he planned to wear as well as one he gave to new teammate Nate Washington, who signed with the Titans this off-season and played for Tiffin.
"I was looking online at all the small-school guys and I decided to order every shirt I could possibly find from a smaller-school guy," Finnegan said. "I've got Tiffin University, Nate Washington. I've got Josh Stamer, South Dakota. Michael Roos, Eastern Washington. Kenny Amato, Montana State. Tuff Harris, Montana. William Hayes, Winston-Salem State. Jacob Ford, Central Arkansas. Fordham and Washburn for Cary Williams."
Finnegan, who was drafted by the Titans in the seventh round in 2006, had 70 tackles, five interceptions and one sack last year.

Heimerdinger: "you can tell they're all rookies"

After last week's mini-camp, the Tennessee Titans' offensive rookies get a mixed review, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.

With the exception of first-round pick Kenny Britt, who strained his hamstring in Tuesday's practice, the others (TE Jared Cook, RB Javon Ringer and WR Dominique Edison) worked with the veterans.
"Right now," offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said, "you can tell they're all rookies. But that's about it."
Both Britt and Ringer mentioned how their heads were "spinning" due to the complexity of the NFL playbook.
"My head is spinning as we speak," said Britt, whose work might have been limited on the field, but not in the playbook. "I feel like I am getting dizzy right now. But I am getting there, slowly but surely. And things are only going to get better."

"Ability-wise, I feel like I am good with competing. Strength, speed and quickness, I feel like I am OK," Ringer said. "It's just the plays are a lot more complicated than college and I am trying to get used to it. I just need some more time. We all just need time. But the veterans have been helpful."
Coach Jeff Fisher and starting QB Kerry Collins talk about the learning curve.
"I kind of sensed that maybe they were trying a little bit too hard," he said. "So many things get thrown at you and you have to process it all. No rookie is immune to having some mistakes, especially early on. But we believe in them. … We really believe they can help us."

"The idea is to introduce them to everything and then over the next couple of weeks get them caught up," Fisher said. "By June they will be caught up to compete with the vets in camp."
They will be caught up "by June" unless, of course, they have the intelligence of Vince Young.

Kerry Collins excited about new receivers

Tennessee Titans QB Kerry Collins did a solid job managing the Titans' offense in 2008. Last year, Collins threw only seven interceptions in 415 pass attempts.

With the additons of Nate Washington from Pittsburgh via free agency and Rutgers' Kenny Britt in the first round of this year's draft, the Titans hope to improve upon an offense that ranked 27th in the league in passing (276.2 yards per game).
"I am excited about the additions that we have made to our receiving corps,'' Collins told Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. "Obviously, Nate is a veteran guy just coming into his own and has a chance to make a real big impact right away.

"We get Kenny Britt with the first (round) pick in the draft and it shows that we are willing to do what it takes and bring the guys in here to improve the passing game, which I think we need to do. I think it's great and I'm obviously excited.''
The Titans lost Brandon Jones to San Francisco via free agency, but Justin Gage, last year's leading receiver, returns as does second-year player Lavell Hawkins.

Bo Scaife's Wikipedia page had him dealt to Philly

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the wikipedia page for Tennessee Titans tight end Bo Scaife had been changed during draft weekend.

Although his wikipedia page has since been fixed, it was reported that he was traded to Philadelphia for Reggie Brown and a third-round pick.

As those close to Scaife called to inquire, Scaife knew the rumors weren't true since he hadn't signed his franchise tender, which would have been required for the team to deal him. He has since signed his tender offer that guarantees him a 2009 salary of $4.46 million.

Who knew that not everything on the Internet was true?

And with the 30th-overall pick...

The Tennessee Titans have selected Kenny Britt, WR from Rutgers.

Britt is a big, physical receiver who runs good routes.

He is the fifth receiver off the board. The first four were Darrius Heyward-Bey (Oakland 7th), Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 10th), Jeremy Maclin (Philadelphia 19th) and Hakeem Nicks (New York Giants 29th).

Arizona is on the clock. Chris "Beanie" Wells from Ohio State would make a lot of sense. See all 2009 NFL Draft Picks.

Titans talk to Cards about Boldin

With the receivers currently on their roster, the Tennessee Titans would likely start Justin Gage and Nate Washington, who was signed in the off-season, at WR.

However, per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, the Titans have talked to the Arizona Cardinals about wide receiver Anquan Boldin. That being said, no offer is imminent and, if the Cardinals are seeking a first- and third-round pick as speculated, time is running out for the Titans (and other teams).
"It's safe to say we're always trying to get the team better, so we'll continue to monitor various situations,'' Reinfeldt said, declining to discuss Boldin specifically. "But there's a numbers of players that are discussed at this point and time. That's kind of the way it works.''

"I would hope you would not operate in a desperation mode or a panic mode, that you had to have this one player,'' Reinfeldt said. "Consistency is the key and I guess we would always operate that way. I think in the long run that is the safest way to do it, the best way to do it.''
The Titans have the 30th pick in the first round and will likely select a CB or WR in the first round. Some of the receivers that should/could be available when the Titans pick include Florida's Percy Harvin, whose physical ability is equally matched by his character concerns, UNC's Hakeem Nicks, Rutgers' Kenny Britt and Ohio State's Brian Robiskie.

A new and improved Vince Young in 2009?

Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young, who won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 and lost the starting job last year, says that 2009 will be different.

Young participated in the third annual Celebrity Basketball Game at Tennessee State yesterday. Afterwards, he told Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean that he's going to avoid the "hoopla" (no pun intended) in 2009.
I am just going to keep my mouth closed, man. All I am doing this year is shutting up, just shutting up and working,” Young said. “I am going to smile and shut up and continue being Vince Young, a happy smiling guy. I am not going to get into the hoopla any more because of the fact I can’t win any more, I see.

“I am just going to shut my mouth and play my role and if they need me then I will be available as a weapon.”
Titans coach Jeff Fisher still refers to Young as the team's "franchise QB." However, after re-signing QB Kerry Collins for another two years, Young won't be doing much other than holding a clipboard for the franchise.

USC WR Patrick Turner to visit Titans, Cowboys

Per Ed Thompson of Scout.com, USC wide receiver Patrick Turner will visit with a pair of NFL teams next week. He is scheduled to visit with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday and with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday and Friday.

Turner is a big receiver (6'5" and 223 pounds) that has good hands. However, he is not very fast (4.70 40 time).

In his three seasons with SoCal, Turner recorded 138 receptions for 1752 yards and 17 touchdowns. Last season, Turner had a career-high 10 touchdowns.

Scout.com ranks Turner as the 20th best WR in this year's class and he won't be drafted until the later rounds.

Should Chris Johnson choose Nashville over Orlando?

Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson is not participating in the team's voluntary off-season workout program. Instead, Johnson has decided to stay in Orlando and work out on his own.

David Climer of The Tennessean argues that Johnson "dropped the ball" since he "should be" in Tennessee.

Climer says that even though Titans coach Jeff Fisher says he's o.k. with Johnson working out separately, Climer doesn't buy it.

Of course, most coaches want their players to participate in the "voluntary" workouts. And there isn't much they can do about players' attendance with the exception of putting incentives in player contracts for participation in off-season workouts.

Johnson, who called the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting "bogus," had 1488 combined rushing and receiving yards and scored 10 touchdowns in his rookie campaign.

Titans to add QB Ramsey

Per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, the Titans have agreed to terms with QB Patrick Ramsey today.

According to Wyatt, Ramsey, a first-round pick by the Redskins in 2002, is expected to compete with Vince Young, a first-round pick by the Titans in 2006, to back up Kerry Collins.

Chris Simms, who was a back-up for the Titans last year, left via free agency and signed with the Broncos. With Jay Cutler being traded to the Bears for Kyle Orton and draft picks, Simms will compete with Orton for an opportunity to start in Denver.

For the past two seasons, Ramsey was a back-up in Denver and appeared in only three games. Over his career, however, Ramsey has started 24 games for the Redskins and Jets.

Young's expected "competition" with Ramsey for back-up is just another reminder of how far Young has fallen since winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in his rookie season.

Titans ask NFL to look into tampering by 'Skins

By submitting newspaper and radio audio files to the NFL, the Tennessee Titans are asking that the NFL look into tampering by the Washington Redskins, who signed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth about 5 hours into free agency.

However, the $100 million man says he doesn't think that the Redskins tampered.
"All I know is the Redskins called my agent at 11:04 p.m. Nashville time and they started negotiating then,'' Haynesworth said last month. "They weren't anywhere close in the first couple of hours and then they got serious. Chad worked the deal then and it worked out.''
The NFL doesn't have any official comment on the matter.
"There are issues of tampering that come up from time to time and if we need to take some action then of course we announce that," [NFL Senior VP Greg] Aiello said. "Until then we don't comment on it.''
Whether the Redskins tampered or not, there was no way that the Titans were going to be able to come close to the money that was being thrown at Haynesworth, who was the Titans first-round pick in 2002.

But considering how much the Redskins gave up to get Haynesworth, the real question is was he worth the cost.

April 01, 2009

Titans sign DeMarcus Faggins

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with cornerback DeMarcus Faggins, who has spent his seven-year career in Houston. Faggins was also considering the Miami Dolphins.
"We think it's a good fit for him to come in as the third corner and challenge for significant playing time there,'' agent Robb Nelson said. "It was a tough decision ... Tennessee was the better fit.''
Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper are the starting corners for the Titans.

However, they lost two corners this off-season. Eric King left for the Lions and Chris Carr signed with the Ravens.

Faggins started five games in 2008 for the Texans. He had 28 tackles and no interceptions in 2008.

March 29, 2009

Is Vince Young still Titans QB of the future?

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher says that Vince Young, taken with the 3rd overall pick in 2006, is still the team's "franchise QB."
"Vince is in a situation now where he will have to do everything he possibly can to earn his job back," Fisher said at the NFL owners' meetings in California. "That starts with the offseason commitment."
Young, who has three years remaining on his contract, is due to earn $4.6 million in 2009, which is reasonable. However, his pay jumps to $7.5 million in 2010 and $8.5 million in 2011.

Fisher says that 2009 isn't a make-or-break season. However, with Kerry Collins coming back as the starter for two more seasons, Young will be an expensive back-up in 2010. If he doesn't make much progress this year, it may not make fiscal sense to keep Young at that price.
"I don't think you could put that type of pressure on a player. He's still a young quarterback with a lot of years left," Fisher said.
The reason to not put that "type of pressure" on Young is because he doesn't appear to have the mental toughness to handle it. He has considered given up football and was described as "suicidal" early last season after being "missing" for a while. Fisher and the Titans said the report was "overblown."

Fisher also says that the team will add a third veteran QB.

Steelers to begin title defense vs Titans

In week 16 of the regular season, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tennessee Titans met at LP Field in Nashville. The Titans won that game 31-14 and locked up home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

In that game, some Titans' players stomped on the "terrible towel." While the Steelers never got their rematch (since the Titans lost to the Ravens in the divisional round), they did get the last laugh by winning Super Bowl XLIII.

Per the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Steelers will host the Titans in the NFL season opener on Thursday, September 10th at Heinz Field.

The full 2009 schedule should be released in April.

March 19, 2009

Lendale White - 20 pounds lighter

The Tennessean's Gary Estwick interviewed Steve Watterson, the Titans strength and conditioning coach.

One of the things discussed was Titans RB Lendale White, who promised to come back in 2009 as a better player with better work habits. According to Watterson, he's sticking to his word.
"He came in this offseason over 20 pounds lighter than he was last year at this time. He showed up today, what is considered the voluntary day, the extra day of training, to make up for Monday because he was not here. He came in yesterday and today and both days have been excellent workouts."
White, the Titans second-round pick in 2006, is certainly going to lose his "starting" spot to the speedy Chris Johnson, who finished eighth in the NFL in rushing with 1228 yards. Last year, Johnson had 251 carries to 200 carries for White. Johnson should see a higher percentage of the carries in 2009.

But if White keeps losing weight, he just might have to concede the "copyright and trademark" to the "Smash and Dash" nicknames to the Panthers' DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, to whom he referred as "Identity and Theft."

March 18, 2009

Titans sign Mark Jones to multi-year contract

The Tennessee Titans have agreed on a multi-year contract with return specialist Mark Jones. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Last year, Jones averaged 24.0 yards per return on kickoffs (tied for 21st in NFL) and 11.4 yards per return on punts (7th in NFL).

Cornerback Chris Carr returned punts and kickoffs for the Titans in 2008. As a free agent, Carr departed for the Baltimore Ravens earlier in the week.

March 02, 2009

Titans sign WR Washington and DT Haye

The Tennessee Titans have signed WR Nate Washington and DT Jovan Haye.

Washington's contract is for 6 years and worth $27 million with $9 million guaranteed. Haye's contract is for 4 years and is worth $16 million.
“Albert was a great player, and he did great things here in Tennessee,” Haye said. “I’m not coming here to try and fill his shoes. I’m just going to be me. Whatever I have to offer, I’m going to give. I don’t see it as replacing Albert. You can never replace Albert. He’s a big massive guy and a great football player."
Haye finished with 6 sacks in 2007, but battled injuries last year and was sackless.

Unless the Titans add another WR, Washington and Justin Gage will be the starters.
“I’m ready for that opportunity and I’m ready for that responsibility to step in and be a No. 1-type receiver,” Washington said.
The operative word here is "type," because in no way, shape or form is Washington a #1 receiver. However, he is probably the best receiver on a team with bad receivers.

Titans agree to deal with QB Kerry Collins

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to a deal with their free-agent QB Kerry Collins. It is a 2-year contract worth $15 million with $8.5 in guaranteed money.
“Kerry did a great job for us last year stepping back into the starting role,” said Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt. “He has veteran leadership, tons of game experience and we expect him to continue to play at a high level for us.”
Collins, who replaced the injured Vince Young and remained the starter when Young was healthy, earned a Pro Bowl appearance in 2008. He finished the season with 2676 yards and a QB rating of 80.2.

Collins will be the starter and Vince Young will be the back-up. The team is hopeful that it can re-sign Chris Simms as well.

Titans increase offer to Haynesworth

With only a few days to go before the free agency period begins on Friday, the Tennessee Titans have increased their offer to free-agent-to-be Albert Haynesworth.

Before increasing their offer, the Titans reportedly offered Haynesworth a deal that would pay him $9 million per year (4 years, $36 million). However, Haynesworth is seeking a deal that would make him the highest paid defensive player in football.

So, by how much did the Titans increase their offer to Haynesworth? That is unknown, but it's not expected that the Titans will give him the type of money he wants and would likely get from another suitor.

Nonetheless coach Jeff Fisher says that the team will continue to try to retain his services even if/after he enters unrestricted free agency.

February 19, 2009

Titans only offered Haynesworth 4 years, $36 million

Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl DT Albert Haynesworth has said that he will test the free-agent waters beginning February 27th at 12:01 a.m.

Haynesworth is seeking a deal that would make him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Jared Allen, who is currently the highest-paid defensive player, signed a 6-year contract for nearly $75 million last off-season.

One could argue that Haynesworth has been the most valuable defensive player in the league the past couple of seasons. However, James Harrison of the Steelers and Bob Sanders of the Colts have won the NFL AP Defensive Player of the Year award the past 2 seasons.

The Titans offered Haynesworth roughly half ($36 million over 4 years) of what he was seeking.

Haynesworth led the Titans and all defensive tackles in sacks (8.5) in 2008.

February 18, 2009

Titans, Bironas agree to 4-year deal

The Tennessee Titans signed kicker Rob Bironas to a 4-year deal worth $12 million, which includes $5 million of guaranteed money.
“I am very excited to get this deal done,’’ Bironas said Wednesday night. “LP Field and Nashville is a place I’m proud to call home and I’m glad to get the opportunity to play here for the next four years. This is where I always wanted to be.’’
The Titans were expected to franchise Bironas if they didn't agree to a long-term deal.

Now they are likely to franchise TE Bo Scaife. The deadline to franchise players is 4 p.m. Thursday.

Albert Haynesworth to test free agency

Tennessee Titans DT Albert Haynesworth will become an unrestricted free agent on February 27th.

While he may re-sign with the Titans, who say they have the money to re-sign him, Haynesworth will test the free agent market before choosing where he will play in 2009 and beyond.

Haynesworth would like to be the highest-paid defensive player in the league. That honor currently belongs to the Vikings Jared Allen, who signed a 6-year, $74 million deal last off-season.

A Pro Bowler the last 2 seasons, Haynesworth had his career-high in sacks (8.5), which also led the league for defensive tackles, in 2008.

Whether it's in Tennessee or elsewhere, Haynesworth is going to get a monster deal. And if he continues to play the way he has played the past 2 seasons, he will earn every penny. The question is will he remain as motivated once he signs on the dotted line.

February 14, 2009

Titans likely to franchise Bironas?

According to The Tennessean, the Tennessee Titans negotiations with kicker Rob Bironas haven't progressed, which increases the chances the team franchises the kicker.

If the Titans don't tag Bironas or agree on a contract, Bironas will become a free agent on February 27th. The Titans have 13 other players scheduled to become a free agent including Albert Haynesworth, who will be one of the most sought-after free agents this off-season.

Bironas would earn $2.48 million, which is the average of the top 5 kickers' salaries, in 2009 if the Titans franchise him. He earned $1,423,600 in 2008.

Bironas made 29 of 33 field goal attempts last year and was tied for 7th in the NFL in scoring (127).

February 09, 2009

Detroit possible destination for Albert Haynesworth?

Unless the Tennessee Titans sign Albert Haynesworth to a long-term deal by February 27th, he will become an unrestricted free agent. The 6'6", 320-pound DT could be the most sought-after prize in the free agent market this off-season.

Last year, the Detroit Lions were the first NFL franchise to finish 0-16. While their offense wasn't good, it wasn't the worst in the NFL. Their defense couldn't say the same.

The Lions finished last in the NFL in scoring defense (32.3 ppg), total defense (404.4 ypg allowed), rushing defense (172.1 ypg allowed) and interceptions (4). But they have vowed to become better at stopping the run.

Jim Schwartz, the new Lions head coach that had spent the previous 8 years in Tennessee, knows Haynesworth as well as anyone.

Tom Kowalski of MLive.com asks whether Haynesworth has matured after the incidents that had marred the beginning of his career such as the Andre Gurode head-stomping in 2006 that led to a 5-game NFL suspension. Or have the past couple of years been simply Haynesworth on good behavior until the big payday comes?
"Has Haynesworth matured and understands what it takes to be a productive and consistent performer in the NFL or was he simply doing what he had to do to get his big contract and guaranteed money? Will Haynesworth still have the fire and motivation once his wallet is fat and happy?"
Like Kowalski points out, it could serve as a "red flag" if Haynesworth makes it to free agency and the Lions aren't targeting him.

February 05, 2009

Titans Bo Scaife to become free agent

Tennessee Titans TE Bo Scaife, who was the Titans' 6th-round pick in 2005, will test free agency this off-season. Free agency begins on February 27th.
"We've had some discussions with the Titans regarding a contract for Bo and nothing is imminent at this point,'' agent Kevin Robinson said. "At this point he is three weeks away from unrestricted free agency so I think it is wise for him to see what unrestricted free agency has out there for him."
Scaife led the Titans in receptions (58) and was 2nd on the team in receiving yards (561). Scaife earned $1.4 million in 2008.

Bills vs Titans in Hall of Fame game

As much as I love the sport of football and dislike the Pro Bowl (which will be played next week in Honolulu), the Super Bowl will mark the end of football for the 2008 NFL season. It's a sad day.

Although the off-season will start in a few hours, the pre-season and the resumption of football in 2009 seemed a little closer with the announcement of participants for the first pre-season game in 2009.

The Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans will face off in the 2009 Hall of Fame game on August 9th.

The enshrinement for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2009 (announced yesterday | see previous classes) will take place on August 8th.

Albert Haynesworth: "I'm not Terrell Suggs"

Earlier in the week, Baltimore Ravens LB Terrell Suggs suggested that he and fellow LBs Bart Scott and Ray Lewis give the Ravens a "hometown discount" to stay with the Ravens.

Tennessee Titans DT Albert Haynesworth, who was franchised by the Titans in 2008, says "I'm not Terrell Suggs." He has no interest in providing a "hometown discount" unless the Titans give him a "100 percent guaranteed contract."
"You want to try and make as much as you can because if you have a career-ending injury you are out … and the team sure as heck is not going to pay you. It's not like baseball or basketball. You want to get as much as possible.''
Haynesworth is looking for a 6-year deal that makes him the highest-paid defensive lineman.

In a sport where a player can so easily suffer a career-ending injury, it makes sense to go for the money grab since they are not dealing with guaranteed money.

Haynesworth, the team's first-round pick in 2002, will become a free agent on Feb. 27th if the Titans and Haynesworth don't work out a deal before then.

Fisher tells Collins he'll start

Nobody watches the Pro Bowl any more.

Earlier in the week, it was announced that nobody would watch Titans QB Kerry Collins, who will join Colts QB Peyton Manning and Broncos QB Jay Cutler as the AFC quarterbacks that won't be watched at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu on February 8th.

This season, Collins replaced Vince Young, who was injured in the first game, and led the Titans to a 13-3 record and the #1 seed in the AFC. However, they were upset by the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round of the playoffs.

After that loss, Collins expressed his interest in being the Titans starter next season.

Otherwise, he would retire. Fisher had publicly stated that he would like Collins to start "for us." However, according to ESPN, Fisher told Collins privately that he would start for the Titans when he notified him about his addition to the Pro Bowl roster.

Collins currently does not have a contract for the 2009 season (or beyond).

The team also hopes to re-sign Chris Simms, who showed progress as a third-stringer last season.

Most money for free agency

Looking at teams with the most money to spend in the off-season, the top 4 teams are either (a) in the Super Bowl or (b) have a new coach and/or new GM.

3 of the bottom 5 teams will have new coaches as well provided Al Davis doesn't remove the "interim" from Tom Cable's title.

Here are the top 5:
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($42 million)
2. Arizona Cardinals ($41 million)
3. Denver Broncos ($34 million)
4. Kansas City Chiefs ($33 million)
5. Tennessee Titans ($31 million)
Here are the bottom 5:
28. Oakland Raiders ($4 million)
29. Indianapolis Colts (-$2 million)
30. Washington Redskins (-$3 million)
31. New Orleans Saints (-$5 million)
32. New York Jets (-$7 million)

Jim Schwartz has 2nd interview with Lions

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz had a second interview the Detroit Lions. This time, he faced questions from reporters.

Asked about who he would draft with the #1 overall pick, Schwartz responded “it’s probably time to find a replacement for Bobby Layne.”
“You’ve got to have the right kind of guys who know how to translate it off the computer to the field and play,” Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse has said. “He pretty much has what it takes if you ask me.”
Schwartz has been DC for the Titans for the past 8 seasons. In 2008, the Titans ranked 2nd in scoring defense (14.6 ppg) and 7th in overall defense (293.6 ypg).

The Lions are also interested in several other defensive coordinators - Giants Steve Spanuolo, Vikings Leslie Frazier and Chargers Ron Rivera.

Kerry Collins wants to be Titans 2009 starting QB

Tennessee Titans QB Kerry Collins, who ranks 14th all-time in passing yards, wants to return to the Titans as the starting QB in 2009.

Collins replaced Vince Young, the team's 1st-round pick in 2006, when Young sprained his knee in week 1 against the Jaguars.
"I think I made my case known, that I'd like to be here and feel that I can be a part of several more good seasons and give them several more good years," he said as the Titans finished up their final meetings and left team headquarters. "… I will pack up and go somewhere else. I don't want to, but that's the reality of this business.

"I really like it here, my family really likes it in Nashville, and I think that there is something special here that I'd like to be a part of. But there is a business side to it too and if it comes down to it I've got to be able to pack up and move on," he said.
In 2008, Collins had a QB rating of 80.2 and threw 12 TDs and only 7 INTs. In his young career, Young has thrown 22 TDs and 32 INTs and some consider him a bust.

Perhaps it's too early to call Young a bust, but he lacks maturity and hasn't made the progress that the Titans should expect from a #3 overall pick.

In the off-season, Young admitted that he thought about quitting playing football.

Early this season, there was the incident where Young disappeared and was rumored to be suicidal. Young admitted to being hurt about being booed, but claims he wasn't suicidal.
"Kerry has one or two options in my opinion," Fisher said. "He starts, and hopefully that's for us, or he's on his tractor at his farm."
Unless Collins is asking for an unreasonable amount, the Titans should bring him back as the starter. While Young may some day reach his potential, the veteran leadership that Collins provides is exactly what this run-first offense needs.

From first-round bye to season-long bye

Today the Tennessee Titans lost to the Baltimore Ravens and the Carolina Panthers lost to the Arizona Cardinals. So much for a first-round bye being a benefit...

Depending on the outcome of Sunday's divisional-round games, the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers could host the NFC and AFC Championship Games, respectively.

The Chargers need to beat the Steelers and the Eagles need to beat the Giants for that to happen. While I can see the Eagles beating the Giants, I can't see the Chargers beating the Steelers. But then again, who expected the Cardinals to man handle the Panthers tonight?

The Cardinals were 9-7 and played in NFL's weakest division. They went 6-0 in the division, which means they were 3-7 in non-division games during the regular season. And the Chargers were 4-8 heading into week 14 of the NFL season.

With the amazing turnarounds in Atlanta and Miami to the quantity of significant games in weeks 16 and 17, this has been the most interesting NFL season I can remember.

But a Chargers vs Cardinals Super Bowl?

Ravens advance to AFC Championship Game

With a 13-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans, the Baltimore Ravens advance the AFC Championship Game to face the winner of Steelers vs Chargers Steelers next Sunday.

Joe Flacco became the first rookie QB to win 2 playoff games. Last week, the Ravens beat the Dolphins in Miami.

While a questionable (lack of a) call on the delay of the game in the final drive hurt the Titans, the loss of Chris Johnson (12 carries for 71 yards) to the ankle injury and their 3 turnovers hurt worse.

All of their turnovers were committed in Ravens territory and after drives of 67 yards, 55 yards and 58 yards. The final turnover, a fumble lost in the 4th quarter, was recovered by the Ravens on their 1-yard line.

Titans Kevin Mawae to miss Ravens game

Tennessee Titans All-Pro center Kevin Mawae won't play against the Baltimore Ravens in tomorrow's divisional round playoff game.

Leroy Harris will start in Mawae's place. His only other start was against the Colts in the season finale, which was an insignificant game from the prospective of playoff seeding. So this will be Harris' first start in a game that means something.
"Our job is to teach everybody on the offensive line to communicate where everybody understands," Mawae said. "Leroy is at that stage right now.

"Maybe there's going to be a delay of recognition, some things that a 14- or 15-year vet would see, but ... this is a team thing. This is not Leroy Harris trying to win a football game against the Baltimore Ravens."
The Ravens' defense is 3rd against the run (81.4 ypg), 2nd against the pass (179.7 ypg) and 1st in INTs (27).

The Titans' offense, on the other hand, have been successful by running the ball (137.4 ypg - 7th in NFL) and by not turning the ball over (9 INTs are 3rd fewest in NFL and Vince Young had 2 of those).

Losers of 3 of 4, Giants are team to beat says Vegas

Despite losing 3 of their last 4 games, the New York Giants are favorites to win the Super Bowl. The Giants' odds are 2-1.

The Tennessee Titans, the other top playoff seed, have the second-lowest odds at 4-1.

Interestingly, all 4 road teams and lower seeds are favorite over the home teams and higher seeds in this weekend's slate of games.

(6) Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins (3)
(5) Indianapolis Colts at winner of San Diego Chargers/Denver Broncos (4)

Week 17 playoff scenarios

I can't recall an NFL season in recent memory with so many important matchups to decide entry into the post-season party like we have had last week and this week. Then again, I can't remember what I did 2 hours ago.

In any event, let's take a look at the current playoff picture. For simplicity sake, we ignore the possibility of a second tie this season.

Teams fall into 4 categories - playoff bound/seed locked, playoff bound/seed TBD, on playoff bubble and eliminated.

AFC Teams:

Playoff bound/seed locked:
Tennessee Titans (1), Pittsburgh Steelers (2), Indianapolis Colts (5)

Playoff bound/seed TBD:
none

On playoff bubble:
Miami Dolphins: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Jets. A Dolphins' loss eliminates them from the playoffs.

New England Patriots: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Bills and Jets win over Dolphins. Bill Belichick stopped short of saying he'd root for the Jets, but that's what he will be doing. If the Dolphins and Pats win, the Pats will get the 6 seed with a Ravens' loss.

New York Jets: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Dolphins and Pats' loss to Buffalo. Loss to Dolphins eliminates Jets' hopes. If the Jets and Pats win, the Jets will get the 6 seed if the Ravens lose.

Baltimore Ravens: Clinch 6 seed with a win over Jaguars or a Patriots loss to Buffalo and a Jets loss to Dolphins.

Denver Broncos: Win AFC West and clinch 4 seed with win over Chargers. Loss eliminates Broncos.

San Diego Chargers: same as Denver Broncos.

Eliminated:
Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders

Terrible Towel Incident

The Titans beat the Steelers 31-14 to earn the top playoff seed and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

During the game, some Titans players stomped on the Steelers' "Terrible Towel" and Jevon Kearse even pretended to blow his nose in it. Titans head coach Jeff Fisher downplayed what the incident meant.
"They don't understand the significance or the meaning of the towel itself to the organization, the Steelers history or the Steelers fans," [Fisher] said. "On one hand, I think they were having fun and just playing with a towel. It was certainly not a shot at the organization or the players or the staff or the fans."
Both teams have earned byes and will each have to win only one home game to meet again for the AFC Championship Game in Nashville.
"When players do things as a result of celebrations, they have to be careful as to not hurt the team," Fisher said.
T.J. "Who's your Momma" Houshmandzadeh wiped his foot with the terrible towel back in 2005 during one of their regular-season matchups. The Steelers beat the Bengals 31-17 in their playoff matchup and won the Super Bowl that season.

Will history repeat itself? Will the Steelers get their revenge? We may soon find out...

Pro Bowl allows Albert Haynesworth to become UFA

Albert Haynesworth is perhaps the most valuable defensive player in the NFL. Last year, he didn't win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, which was won by Bob Sanders. However, it's arguable that his value to the Titans is greater than any other defensive player's value to his team.

Haynesworth, who will miss the final two regular-season games with a sprained MCL, made it back to the Pro Bowl. That distinction is one of four "triggers" to allow him to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
"I am just excited for Albert that he made the Pro Bowl and he is certainly deserving of it,'' Speck said, according to the report. "Right now I know he is clearly focused on trying to get healthy and making it back for the playoff run. I think the contract stuff will take care of itself at the end of the season.''
Fellow Titans DL Kyle Vanden Bosch had surgery this week and expects to be back for the Titans first playoff game. If the Titans win Sunday when they host the Steelers, they will have the top seed in the AFC. In either case, they have clinched a first-round bye.

Haynesworth has 75 tackles and 8.5 sacks this season. He will certainly be one of the most sought-after free agents in the off-season.

AFC Playoff Picture

With 2 weeks to go, the AFC and NFC playoff races are interesting. We will take a team-by-team look at both conferences starting with the AFC. Here are current playoff seedings:
1. Tennessee Titans (12-2)
2. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3)
3. New York Jets (9-5)
4. Denver Broncos (8-6)
5. Indianapolis Colts (10-4)
6. Baltimore Ravens (9-5)
AFC East:

New York Jets (9-5): The Jets win the division if they win out (at Seattle and vs Miami). Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

Miami Dolphins (9-5): The Dolphins win the division if they win out (at Kansas City and at NY Jets). Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

New England Patriots (9-5): The Patriots win the division if they win out (vs Arizona and at Buffalo) and the Dolphins and Jets both lose at least 1 game. Otherwise, they are 1 of 4 teams fighting for the 6th spot as the Colts are 10-4.

Buffalo Bills (6-8): Eliminated.

Albert Haynesworth could miss rest of regular season

In the loss to the Texans, Albert Haynesworth likely suffered a sprained MCL and will have an MRI Monday. Also, he could miss the remaining regular season games.
“He is a dominant player for us,’’ linebacker David Thornton said. “We definitely need that guy.’’
The Titans (12-2) are 1 game ahead of the Steelers (11-3) for the top seed in the playoffs. If the Steelers beat the Titans, the Steelers would hold the tie-breaker however. And the week 17 schedule favors the Steelers, who face the 4-9 Browns. The Titans play the Colts, who have won 7 straight, in the season finale.

Worst-case scenario for Tennessee is a first-round bye. But Jeff Fisher and the Titans would much rather face the Steelers in the AFC Championship game in Nashville instead of the hostile Heinz Field.

3 Division Titles Clinched Today

Today 3 teams clinched division titles. The other 5 divisions are up for grabs regardless what happens with the remaining 2 night games.

The Tennessee Titans clinched the AFC South with a victory over the Cleveland Browns even though 2nd-place Indianapolis Colts beat the Cincinnati Bengals.

The New York Giants clinched the NFC East with a Dallas Cowboys loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers even though the Giants lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys still moved into the 6th seed since they lost to an AFC team while the Atlanta Falcons, who have the same 8-5 record as the Cowboys, lost to an NFC team (New Orleans Saints).

The Arizona Cardinals clinched the NFC West with a blowout win over the St. Louis Rams 34-10.

A look at the AFC playoff picture

With a month remaining on the NFL schedule, it's do-or-die time for several AFC teams. For others, this month will be an opportunity to jockey for playoff positioning.

Here are the current AFC standings:
1. Tennessee Titans (11-1)
2. Pittsbugh Steelers (9-3)
3. New York Jets (8-4)
4. Denver Broncos (7-5)
5. Indianapolis Colts (8-4)
6. Baltimore Ravens (8-4)
Let's take a look at every AFC team by division. Team records are in parenthesis.

AFC East:

New York Jets (8-4): The Jets would have the 3 seed if the season ended today, but play in the tightest division and just lost to the team that would be the 4 seed. The Jets have an easy (relative to Steelers, Dolphins and Pats) remaining schedule with road games in San Francisco and Seattle and home games against Buffalo and Miami.

New England Patriots (7-5): The Patriots have suffered season-ending injuries to Adalius Thomas, Rodney Harrison, Laurence Maroney and, of course, Tom Brady. Matt Cassel has filled in admirably and has essentially written himself a huge lottery ticket as he enters free agency in the off-season. The Pats play 3 of their remaining 4 on the road. If they make the playoffs, it's most likely as the #6 seed.

Miami Dolphins (7-5): The 'Fins trail the Colts and Ravens by 1 game and are tied with the Patriots in the playoff race. What a turnaround for a team that finished 1-15, has a first-year coach (Tony Sparano) and lost their best player (Jason Taylor). Like the Pats, they finish up with 3 of 4 road games.

Buffalo Bills (6-6): Despite their strong 5-1 start, the Bills will need a miracle to make Donte Whitner's playoff guarantee come true. However, history hasn't been kind to this franchise when it comes to miracles.

Kyle Orton doesn't rule out Sunday vs Titans

It was expected that Kyle Orton would miss up to one month after injuring his ankle in the Detroit Lions game. Now, Orton says he won't rule out playing Sunday (yet).
"I'm certainly not ruling out anything," Orton said Wednesday. "I don't know exactly what the timetable's going to be, but I just feel if I keep on making improvement, I certainly can't rule out this week."
Many expected the Bears (and Kyle Orton) to be bad in 2008. Instead, they are tied for first place in the NFC North. Their next four games are home vs the undefeated Tennessee Titans and then 3 games on the road vs Green Bay, St. Louis and Minnesota. Having Orton back for the key matchups against the Packers and Vikings would be huge for the Bears.

Has Vince Young played his last game?

In college, Vince Young impressed me as a laid-back yet confident football player and young man. In his rookie NFL season, he was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. His future seemed bright.

Earlier in the year, however, he surprised many when news surfaced that he had thought about retirement.
“I really thought long and hard about it,” Young told the Web site. “There was so much going on with my family. It was crazy being an NFL quarterback. It wasn’t fun anymore. All of the fun was out of it. All of the excitement was gone. All I was doing was worrying about things.
Then earlier this week reports show that Vince Young was “suicidal” even though Young and Jeff Fisher said reports of the incident were “overblown”.
“I asked [Fisher], ‘What made her worry about him?’” Lt. Andrea Swisher wrote. “He stated, ‘His mood, his emotions, he wants to quit, and he mentioned suicide several times.’ He went on to state that [Young] left the house with a gun.”
Nobody likes to be booed, but Young is extremely thin-skinned. He says that he is “committed” to football, but Pro Football Talk says he has lost the Titans’ locker room and may never play again.
The recent post from MDS regarding Peter King’s report that Titans quarterback Vince Young has lost the locker room (by the way, Eddie George says the same thing on FSN’s PFP . . . check your local listing for the next showing) convinces us that, barring a dramatic turn of events, Young will never play football again for the Tennessee Titans, and possibly never play again for any team.
I’m not sure whether or not Young will play football again. But he’s fun to watch so I hope he does.

AFC South Preview

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Prediction: 12-4 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: The Colts have had to deal (are dealing) with injuries to several key players: Peyton Manning, Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney, Jeff Saturday, etc. Peyton Manning is like a coach on the field and helps orchestrate perhaps the greatest offense of this decade. The Greatest Show on Turf was better at its peak, but their success hasn't lasted as long. But the most important player on this team is Bob Sanders. The under-sized, playmaking safety is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and without a healthy Sanders, I would expect the Jags to pass the Colts. If it weren't for the difference Sanders made to this defense after returning in 2006, Peyton and the Colts would have never won the Super Bowl that year.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Colts have the longest current streak of 10-win seasons in the NFL at 6 years.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 152-104 (.594)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (8): vs Jacksonville, at Green Bay, at Tennessee, vs New England, at Pittsburgh, at San Diego, at Jacksonville, vs Tennessee

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 38 wins (12.7 per season)

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Prediction: 11-5 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: As good as the Jaguars have been recently, they unfortunately play in arguably the toughest division in football. Every year, I think this could be the year that the Jags overtake the perennial AFC South winner Indianapolis Colts. The Jaguars play a smash-mouth style of football and can grind it out with the best of them. They may not be exciting unless, of course, you find winning football games exciting. My biggest concern for the Jaguars are the issues they have had off the field from Fred Taylor getting arrested in Miami and Matt Jones getting arrested for cocaine possession amongst many other issues. Some have referred to the Jags as the "Bengals of the South" because of the number of arrests they have had over the past couple of years. My other big concern is the production out of their wideouts. Reggie Williams and Jerry Porter have been hurt while Troy Williamson still couldn't catch a cold. Matt Jones, their best WR in the pre-season, faces an October court date. The Jags are a 1a to the Colts, but I think it's going to be more of the same for the Jags and a wildcard berth.

Interesting Stat/Fact: Of the Top 10 teams in victories over the last 3 years, the Jaguars are the only team to not win their division at least once in the past 3 years.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 143-113 (.559)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): at Tennessee, at Indianapolis, vs Pittsburgh, vs Tennessee, vs Green Bay, vs Indianapolis

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 31 wins (10.3 per season)

TENNESSEE TITANS
Prediction: 9-7 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: The Colts have the current Defensive Player of the Year (Bob Sanders). However, the Titans may have the league's defensive MVP, if such an award existed. Whether or not Albert Haynesworth is the best defensive player in the league is questionable, but I believe he's the most valuable to his team. And if you think the Jaguars are boring, you're not going to find the Titans much more exciting. Vince Young can make plays with his legs and rookie RB Chris Johnson is electric, but the Titans will win games by winning it in the trenches. I think this is a make-or-break season for Young, who threw nearly twice as many INTs than TDs in his sophomore season. Young will need to protect the ball better if the Titans are going to make it back to the post-season with their style of football. There's a saying about that the 3 most important things in business are "location, location, location." That applies to football too. The Titans are disadavantaged by playing in the same division as the Colts and the Jags (2 of the NFL's top 5 teams in my opinion). The Titans have a shot at the 6th wildcard spot, but I think they lose out on the tie-breaker.

Interesting Stat/Fact: In 2007, 5 of the 6 AFC playoff teams scored 100+ points more than their opponents. The Titans scored 4 more (301 PF, 297 PA). Very efficient.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 139-117 (.543)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): vs Jacksonville, vs Indianapolis, vs Green Bay, at Jacksvonille, vs Pittsburgh, at Indianapolis

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 22 wins (7.3 per season)

HOUSTON TEXANS
Prediction: 7-9 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: The Houston Texans drafted Mario Williams with the 1st overall pick in 2006. Everyone scoffed. How could you not take the electric Reggie Bush or Houston-native Vince Young? After 2 seasons, the Texans are the ones who are laughing last. Plus they hit the jackpot with their 2nd round pick that year, DeMeco Ryans, who won Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Texans had their first non-losing season last year and are heading in the right direction. However, they're in the AFC South (see Tennessee Titans). If Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson stay healthy, the passing game will be solid (see stat about Andre Johnson below). Their front seven on defense is solid, but the question marks for the Texans are will they be able run the ball consistently and how will their secondary play. The Texans are still at least a year away, but they are building their team around a solid core of young talent.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Texans were 6-3 last year in the 9 games Andre Johnson played. They were 2-5 in games he did not.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 140-116 (.547)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (8): at Pittsburgh, at Tennessee, at Jacksonville, vs Indianapolis, at Indianapolis, vs Jacksonville, at Green Bay, vs Tennessee

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 16 (5.3 per season)
