Willie Parker will visit with Redskins

Free-agent running back Willie Parker will visit with the Washington Redskins, per Rick Maese of the Washington Post.

Although he is technically older (born November 11, 1980) than the incumbent running back (born September 1, 1981), Clinton Portis, there is much less wear on Parker's wheels. Portis has 2,176 career rushing attempts while Parker has 1,253.

Parker, who rushed for nearly 1,500 yards in 2006, was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of second-year back Rashard Mendenhall.

Meanwhile, Portis is one of the few running backs from last year's Redskins' squad that remains on the roster. Other running backs that won't be back include Rock Cartwright, Ladell Betts and Quinton Ganther, among others.

Last season, Portis missed the final eight games of the season after suffering a concussion and ended the year with only 494 yards and one touchdown on 124 carries.

Speaking of (or, more precisely, not speaking) of Portis' future, new Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said, “Let’s not talk about Clinton. Let’s talk about everybody on the Washington Redskins. Let’s not focus on one guy ... I want all the guys on our football team to make a commitment in the offseason to work, and work extremely hard … It’s very important to show your teammates exactly how hard you work and how dedicated you are to the program.”

If Parker ends up in Washington, I could easily see a situation where he becomes the featured back in a split with Portis, in which case he could become a viable flex option in fantasy football in 2010.

Fantasy Football - RB Sit'em Week 16

Merry Christmas to everyone and if you're reading this, there's a good chance you've made it to your fantasy football league's Championship Game. Congratulations and good luck.

Here are some running backs who will likely put fantasy coal into your stockings:

Matt Forte, Bears (vs Vikings): This week concludes a brutal (fantasy) playoff run for Forte, who faced the Packers and Ravens in the two playoff matchups before the Vikings this week. And, in fact, it's been a hugely disappointing season for anyone who drafted Forte as he was arguably the biggest bust of fantasy drafts. In the past five weeks, Forte had one double-digit performance and that was against the Rams. The first time he played the Vikings (week 12), Forte finished with five fantasy points. Don't expect much more in week 16.

Quinton Ganther, Redskins (vs Cowboys): The majority of Ganther's fantasy production over the past two weeks has come from his three rushing touchdowns. But those TDs were scored against teams -- Oakland and NY Giants -- that have allowed the most and third-most rushing TDs, respectively. After last week's pathetic performance collectively as an offense against the Giants, it would be difficult to garner any kind of confidence in Ganther or any Redskins' player. Considering the Cowboys are allowing only 97.7 rushing yards per game (sixth-fewest in NFL), it would be wiser to sit Ganther on your bench.

LeSean McCoy/Brian Westbrook/Leonard Weaver, Eagles (vs Broncos): After missing five weeks, Westbrook will return and play against the Broncos although it's uncertain how many looks he'll eventually get. Nonetheless that will lower McCoy's value as if it weren't low enough due to sharing work with Leonard Weaver, who had a career high in rushing attempts (17) last week. In a pass-first offense like Philly's and with three backs to get touches, none of them should be within 10 feet of your starting lineup this week.

Justin Forsett, Seahawks (vs Packers): After Julius Jones suffered a bruised lung in week 10, Forsett picked up the slack. In weeks 10-12, Forsett averaged nearly 20 fantasy points per game, had two 100-yard rushing games and scored four touchdowns. But since Jones returned in week 13, Jones (42) has received nearly twice as many carries as Forsett (23). That said, it doesn't help that the Seahawks are facing the Packers, who allow the second-fewest rushing yards per game (83.6) in the NFL.

Fantasy Football: Week 14 RB Start'em

It's week 14 and it's time for fantasy football playoffs. Here are four running backs that I'd be comfortable starting this week:

Jamaal Charles, Chiefs (vs Bills): Charles has received 14-18 carries in each of the past four weeks and he has scored three rushing touchdowns during that span. On the season, no team has allowed more points to opposing running backs than the Bills. Plus, they have allowed 200+ rushing yards in one-third of their games this season.

Fred Jackson, Bills (vs Chiefs): Jamaal Charles isn't the only RB in this game that has a highly favorable matchup. The Chiefs have allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to opposing running backs and last week they allowed a season-worst 246 rushing yards. In the past five games, they've given up seven rushing TDs. Despite Jackson's weak performance in week 13, Bills coach Perry Fewell will still be the featured back in the offense.

Quinton Ganther, Redskins (vs Raiders): Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts are on IR. And Ganther will get the start in week 14. Ganther, who was born in Oakland, has had 13 carries in the past two games for 78 yards. Considering that the Redskins face the Raiders, who have allowed the most rushing touchdowns in the NFL (18), Ganther should be in for a productive day as a flex play.

Knowshon Moreno, Broncos (vs Colts): Moreno has rushed for 80+ yards in four consecutive weeks and he's scored three rushing touchdowns in the past two weeks. In the past three weeks, the Colts have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to opposing running backs. Provided the Colts don't jump out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead forcing the Broncos into passing mode, Moreno should have a big day. But, in either case, he should be productive and is a good start as a RB2 or flex play.

Check back later for our position-by-position rankings for week 14.

Ganther -- not Cartwright -- to start against Raiders

Instead of Rock Cartwright, Redskins running back Quinton Ganther will get the start when the Redskins play the Raiders on Sunday, according to the Washington Post.

In the past two games, Ganther had 13 carries for 78 yards, which is an average of 6.0 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Cartwright has rushed for only 77 yards on 28 carries in those two games.

Ganther should be a solid flex play this week as the Raiders have given up the most rushing touchdowns (18) in the NFL this year.

Clinton Portis placed on IR

Redskins running back Clinton Portis is done for the year.

According to the Washington Post, the Redskins placed Portis on injured reserve (IR), which ends his season, and it's possible that he will call it quits completely.

"If it's my time and I look back today, I think I have had a great career," Portis said on ESPN 980 radio (via the Washington Post).

However, Portis' agent Drew Rosenhaus tweeted, "The decision to place Clinton on IR is purely a precaution, and he will be ready for 2010 and beyond. We are very optimistic about his Redskins future."

Portis suffered a concussion in week 8 and hasn't played since. Ladell Betts, who was his back-up, was injured in week 11 and is also on IR.

Rock Cartwright has 41 carries in the past three games for 144 yards and he has caught 13 passes for 130 yards. Meanwhile, Quinton Ganther had eight carries for 46 yards last week.

This week, the Redskins face the Oakland Raiders, who have allowed the third-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. No team has allowed more rushing touchdowns than the Raiders have this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 50 WRs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 wide receivers for week 13:

1. Randy Moss, Patriots (at Dolphins): In his first matchup against the Dolphins, who rank in the bottom 10 in passing yards allowed (233 ypg), Moss had six receptions for 147 yards and one TD. On the season, Moss leads the NFL in receiving yards (992) and is only one behind the leaders in TD receptions (eight). After getting their ass whooped on prime-time TV, expect the Patriots, Tom Brady, Moss & Co. to come out swinging.

2. Andre Johnson, Texans (at Jaguars): Johnson is one of the league's most complete receivers and perhaps the most underrated. This week, Johnson gets a favorable matchup against the Jaguars, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to receivers this season. On the season, Johnson ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (945).

3. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals (vs Vikings): The Vikings have been without Antoine Winfield, the team's best cornerback, for the past five games. On the season, the Vikings have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. My expectation is for QB Kurt Warner to return from his concussion as Fitzgerald had his worst game of the season with Matt Leinart as QB last week. Fitzgerald is tied for the league lead in touchdowns (nine) including four TDs in the last three games in which Warner has played.

4. Reggie Wayne, Colts (vs Titans): Wayne is second in receptions (79), second in receiving yards (987) and tied for first in touchdowns (nine) in the league. In addition to their improvements with Vince Young under center, the Titans have improved on the defensive side of the ball as they are healthier now. Only the Lions (27) have allowed more receiving touchdowns than the Titans (25) on the season. During their five-game winning streak, however, the Titans have allowed only the 18th-most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

5. Sidney Rice, Vikings (at Cardinals): In three of his past six games, Rice has 136 receiving yards or more including a game with 201yards. With the exception of his game at Green Bay, Rice has had 89 yards or more in five of his past six. Favre and Rice have built chemistry quickly and they have a favorable matchup against the Cardinals, who have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to receivers this season.

Fantasy Football: Top 40 RBs for Week 13

With the fantasy football playoffs on the horizon, here are my top 5 running backs for week 13:

1. Thomas Jones, Jets (at Bills): The first time that Jones faced the Bills this season, he rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown. The Bills have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season and only the Raiders have allowed more rushing TDs than the Bills (16). Since the Jets want QB Mark Sanchez to air it out less and less (his attempts have gone from 35 to 30 to 21 to 17), Jones better bring his lunch-pail tonight.

2. Chris Johnson, Titans (at Colts): As well as Johnson has played in the past six weeks (125+ rushing yards every week), you can consider Johnson 1(a) -- not #2 -- in this week's rankings. During their five-game winning streak, Johnson has rushed for seven touchdowns. Although the Colts have a middle-of-the-pack run defense on the season, they've given up the 11th-most fantasy points to opposing RBs in the past three weeks.

3. DeAngelo Williams, Panthers (vs Buccaneers): DeAngelo has cooled off a bit with no touchdowns in the past three weeks and only one 100-yard game during that span. The first time that Williams faced the Buccaneers this season, he carried the ball 30 times for 152 yards and two scores. Expect more of the same against the league's third-worst rush defense.

4. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (at Cardinals): The Cardinals were the league's top-ranked run defense earlier in the season, but they have dropped to 14th in the NFL against the run (108.6 ypg allowed). In four of the past five weeks, they have allowed an opposing running back to eclipse the century mark. Surprisingly, Peterson has only three 100-yard games on the season, but he is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars (vs Texans): MJD has rushed for more rushing touchdowns (13) than any other running back. (Of course, none of those are as famous as the TD that he didn't score.) That said, Jones-Drew faces a Texans run defense that turned itself around after the first three weeks. In week 3, however, MJD rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Football: Top 25 QBs for Week 13

It's time to put up or shut up. If you haven't yet clinched a playoff berth in your fantasy league, it likely comes down to week 13 for you as most fantasy leagues start their playoffs in week 14.

And to paraphrase Bill Parcells, this is why you buy those cheat sheets, do those mock drafts, etc. -- to get into (and win in) the playoffs.

Here are my top 5 quarterbacks for week 13:

1. Peyton Manning, Colts (vs Titans): Manning is the only QB to average over 300 passing yards per game (310.5) and is second in passing touchdowns (24). While the Titans and their defense have been playing better lately, they have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns (25) this season.

2. Brett Favre, Vikings (at Cardinals): In his past four games, Favre has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season, Arizona allows the fourth-most passing yards (258.3 ypg).

3. Drew Brees, Saints (at Redskins): Brees is coming off a five-TD performance against the Patriots in what was arguably the most important regular-season game in team history. Although this week's opponent (Washington) allows the fewest passing yards in the NFL (170.4 ypg), Brees and the Saints offense are firing on all cylinders right now.

4. Tom Brady, Patriots (at Dolphins): Brady failed to connect on a TD pass last week, but he had 332 passing yards against the Dolphins in their first match-up. With targets like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it's not likely that Brady goes TD-less in back-to-back games.

5. Philip Rivers, Chargers (at Chiefs): Rivers has posted three consecutive 100+ QB ratings and this week he faces the Browns, who have allowed the ninth-most passing yards (233.4 ypg) this season. In the past four games, Rivers has thrown eight touchdowns and only two interceptions.

DeAngelo Hall won't play vs Eagles

Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who has a sprained knee, will miss Sunday's game against the Eagles, per David Elfin of the Washington Times.

With Hall out, Carlos Rogers will step into the starting lineup opposite of Fred Smoot.

"I'll be ready to play," Rogers said. "It ain't nothing new. I'm not going into the game with the attitude of showing [them]. I know I can play. Obviously, they know it, too. That's just how things shaked out. I just gotta take advantage of the opportunity I get, put something good on the field right now."

The first time the Redskins faced the Eagles, Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson beat Rogers on double-move for a 57-yard touchdown.

However, Redskins coach Jim Zorn says that Rogers has "had a good week of practice."

On the season, the Redskins have allowed the fewest passing yards (161.6 ypg) in the league.

November 22, 2009

Ladell Betts has knee injury

The Redskins were already without starting running back Clinton Portis, who has missed the past two games with a concussion.

Now they have lost back-up Ladell Betts to a knee injury for at least the rest of this game. There is no word on the extent of his injury.

Betts had four carries for five yards before being injured.

Rock Cartwright has 129 combined yards (63 rushing and 66 receiving) as the Redskins lead 6-0 after three quarters against the Cowboys.

Cerrato endorses Zorn -- No, really...

Redskins general manager Vinny Cerrato stated on ESPN's 980 AM (via The Washington Post) that coach Jim Zorn is, get this, "the head coach of the Washington Redskins and will be for the rest of the year and hopefully for the future."

Apparently, it's a love fest in Washington as Zorn, who was unaware of Cerrato's comments, said, "...I'm the head football coach. I want to be here for the next 10 years. ..."

And receiver Santana Moss said, "The world outside is always so curious and they have so many answers and so many resolutions over what to do. So I'm glad we solved that and make everyone hush up. It's going to be one of those situations where now he can coach freely and not worry about that other crap[stuff]."

But it was Cerrato who stripped Zorn of his offensive play-calling duties on Monday. And the person who will handle those duties is Sherm Lewis, who was calling bingo balls for the past five years.

While the idea was presented as a joint decision by Cerrato and Zorn, it was really all Cerrato's idea as pointed out by Ryan O'Halloran of The Washington Times.

So, how much does a GM really endorse a coach when he transitions some of his responsibilities to a man who has been out of football for five years?

Enough for the franchise to make an offer to a possible replacement.

Mike Shanahan reportedly turned down an offer to coach the Redskins and he said, "there was little he could do in the middle of the season for them and that changing coaches during the season in the NFL rarely works,'' per a source of Fanhouse's Thomas George.

I suppose there is a chance that the team, with their collective backs against the wall, come out swinging and play an inspired and emotionally-charged game Monday night against the Eagles on the national stage.

More likely than not, however, the Redskins will look worse than ever against a division rival, who also has something to prove after their embarrassing loss to the Raiders.

We'll see if Cerrato is singing the same tune if when the Eagles hand the Redskins a beatdown on national TV.

Zorn benches Campbell, one week 'til unemployment line?

All it took for the Chiefs to get their first win of the season was a shot to play the Redskins.

After trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Redskins benched starting QB Jason Campbell in favor of Todd Collins.

Campbell was 9 of 16 for 89 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Todd Collins wasn't much better as he completed only six of 14 passes for 75 yards.

The Redskins have lost to Lions and Chiefs, who are both 1-5, and nearly lost to the Rams and Buccaneers, who are both 0-6.

Although many expected the Redskins to finish last in the NFC East, most expected them to be more competitive than they've been.

Coach Jim Zorn's tenure in Washington could be nearing the end as the Redskins have only one more game before their bye and that game is against a much better division rival (Philadelphia).

Carlos Rogers calls out owner

Redskins cornerback Carlos Rogers is pointing fingers and, surprisingly, it's at the guy who signs his paychecks.

"It not only starts with the players, coaches," Rogers said, per the Associated Press (via Pro Football Talk). "It starts with the ownership."

While I agree with Rogers, it is gutsy to publicly call out the head honcho -- even if he makes poor decisions.

Rogers, the first of the Redskins' two first-round picks in 2005, may have punched his ticket out of DC. Then again, that may be his plan.

The Redskins are 2-3 and in last place in the NFC East. They squeaked out their two wins against two of the league's worst teams (the Rams and Bucs, who have combined for an 0-10 record) by a combined margin of five points. And head coach Jim Zorn sits on the hottest seat in the league.

So, who will have a longer tenure with the Redskins from this point forward: Rogers or Zorn?

Fantasy Duds - Week 5 Running Backs

Heading into week five, here are three running backs that I expect to have a down week:

Cedric Benson, Bengals: Benson is tied for fourth in the league in rushing (367 yards) through four games. However, this week he faces a stingy Ravens defense that leads the NFL in rushing defense (59.5 yards per game) and hasn't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 39 consecutive games. On average, opposing rushers are averaging only 2.6 yards per carry against the Ravens. In 12 career rushing attempts against the Ravens, Benson has 23 yards and no touchdowns.

Steven Jackson, Rams: Jackson, who is tied with Benson in rushing, has accumulated a lot of yards. However, he has yet to reach the endzone through a quarter of the season. Coincidentally, Jackson's week five opponent (Vikings) hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown this season. If you have Jackson on your roster, he was likely selected as your team's number one back meaning you may not have enough viable options to bench him. But I would expect Jackson to post a pedestrian 50-70 yards and no scores against the stout Vikings run defense.

Clinton Portis, Redskins: Portis has yet to rush for 100 yards in a game this year and the last three games were against the Rams, Lions and Buccaneers, who are a combined 1-11. Although the Panthers are last in rushing defense (182.7 ypg), the Panthers have faced three teams with elite backs and/or rushing offenses(Eagles, Falcons and Cowboys). During the week, there was reports of a disagreement between Portis and fullback Mike Sellers (about Sellers' missed blocking assignments). Portis is averaging under four yards per carry and hasn't scored a touchdown yet this season.

Clinton Portis will play vs Bucs

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis, who was a game-time decision against the Buccaneers, will play today. Portis has a calf strain and bone spurs in both ankles.

In two of his three games, Portis faced weak rushing defenses in St. Louis and Detroit.

The Bucs are the second-worst rushing defense in the NFL through three games allowing 187.3 yards per game and 5.2 yards per carry.

Even though he'll play this week, fantasy football owners should be cautious with Portis, who is only averaging 3.9 yards per carry this season.

Portis hasn't had more than 19 carries in any of his three games this year and has only 183 rushing yards and no touchdowns.

The Lions have a winning streak of 1

Before finishing with the NFL's first-ever 0-16 season in 2008, the Detroit Lions beat the Kansas City Chiefs on December 23, 2007. That win against the Chiefs ended a six-game losing streak.

So, in other words, the Lions had a 19-game losing streak entering today's game against the Washington Redskins. And they had only won one game in their previous 26 attempts.

But today the Lions gave the fans in the Motor City reason to celebrate as they have started a one-game winning streak by beating the Redskins 19-14.

And new head coach Jim Schwartz, who was the Titans defensive coordinator last year, got his first career win.

Rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford, who had thrown five interceptions in his first two games, did not throw any interceptions and second-year running back Kevin Smith rushed for over 100 yards.

However, Smith left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.

The Bears, Steelers and Packers are up next on the Lions' schedule before their week 7 bye.

Even if their winning streak is short-lived, the Lions currently have a better record than their coach's previous team (the Titans are 0-3).

2009 NFC East Prediction

Here are my predictions for the NFC East in 2009:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Prediction: 10-6 (Eagles Schedule | Eagles Forum)

The NFC East is the strongest division from top to bottom. Although the signing of Michael Vick may have dominated the headlines, the team made other off-season moves. They traded for left tackle Jason Peters and signed him to a long-term contract. They also drafted LeSean McCoy as Brian Westbrook's future replacement and receiver Jeremy Maclin, who will give Donovan McNabb another playmaker. However, the team still lacks a true No. 1 receiver, but minus the T.O. days, the Eagles may have their best receiving corps in the McNabb era. Then again, that isn't saying much. In such a physical and talented division, the question will be how their defense reacts to the losses of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson (who passed away), LB Stewart Bradley (season-ending injury) and safety Brian Dawkins (who was released).

Strength of Schedule: 2009 opponents had a .535 winning percentage in 2008 (9th)

2008 Playoff Teams on Schedule (5): at Carolina, vs NY Giants, at San Diego, at Atlanta, at NY Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 27 (9.0 per season)

Colt Brennan to IR, Chase Daniel cut

The Washington Redskins have placed Colt Brennan on injured reserve (IR), which will end his season, with an assortment of injuries (hamstring, hip and knee), per Jason Reid of the Washington Post.

With Brennan on IR, it appeared that rookie quarterback Chase Daniel would be the team's third quarterback behind starter Jason Campbell and Todd Collins.

Instead the Redskins cut Chase Daniel, who threw for 12,515 during his four-year college career at Missouri.

Brennan, the team's third of three sixth-round picks last year, struggled in the pre-season's first three games throwing three interceptions in those games. He was 10 of 14 with no picks in the fourth pre-season game.

Will Mike Shanahan coach the Redskins in 2010?

Denver Broncos fire head coach Shanahan

In his first year as Washington Redskins head coach, Jim Zorn finished 8-8.

For a first-year head coach that made the transition straight from QB coach in Seattle, that's a solid performance. However, 8-8 means the Redskins finished dead last in the highly-competitive NFC East.

In addition to finishing last in his division, Zorn also finished last among the four rookie head coaches in 2008. The other three - Baltimore's John Harbaugh, Miami's Tony Sparano and Atlanta's Mike Smith - all made the playoffs. Smith won the NFL Coach of the Year award.

In his Sunday at the Post column this week, Michael Lombardi of National Football Post writes, "There was a positive reaction from my NFL friends to my pick of Mike Shanahan potentially being the next coach of the Redskins if things don’t go well this year in Washington."

Lombardi points out that Shanahan will be visiting as many camps as possible to "keep up with the game" and that Washington is likely to be on his list of destinations.

However, there is likely to be another opening within the division at the end of the year as Wade Phillips is in the final year of his contract in Dallas.

So, if Zorn is out and the Redskins want Shanahan, will the feelings be mutual?

Brian Mitchell fired for being critical of 'Skins?

Ex-Redskin Brian Mitchell lost his job with ESPN-980, which is a radio station in the Red Zebra radio network. Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder owns Red Zebra.

While Red Zebra CEO Bruce Gilbert says that Mitchell was let go due to the economy, Mitchell claims it was due to critical remarks directed towards the Redskins.

"If you never discuss any money, or any changes in my money with me, then you already have your minds made up. This didn't have a damn thing to do with the economy," Mitchell told [Michael] McCarthy [of USA Today].

"When people turn on the radio, they want to hear what they truly see. Not what the company line is."

While we'll likely never know the "real" reason - economy or criticism - for Mitchell's dismissal, it's likely that his criticism didn't help his causes.

In either event, Mitchell guest hosted with Howard Eskin on WIP in Philadelphia.

According to Sheil Kapadia of Philly.com, Marc Rayfield, who is the station manager, said via e-mail: "When he became available, we decided to take a look. Where we might potentially use him is yet to be determined but the feedback from our listeners has been tremendous."

Stay tuned (pun intended) ...

Jansen released by 'Skins, agrees to deal with Lions

The Washington Redskins have released tackle Jon Jansen, who was the Redskins' second-round pick in 1999.

"It hurts," Jansen said. "If I had been here three, four, five years, it might not have been so emotional, but I've been here for a decade and made so many friends. I thought I would have the opportunity to compete during training camp, but I wasn't in their plans."

It didn't take long for Jansen to find a new home, which also happens to be his old home.

Per Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions and Jansen have agreed to a one-year deal for the league veteran minimum salary ($845,000).

Jansen played high school football in Clawson (MI) and college football at the University of Michigan.

“It’s going to be hard not being a Redskin anymore, because I’ve done that longer than I’ve done anything in my life,” said Jansen. “But on the other hand, I’m excited for a new beginning.”

Since 2004 when he missed the season with a torn Achilles, Jansen has struggled to stay healthy battling various injuries. Last year, he was benched in favor of Stephen Heyer, but he finished the season as the starting right tackle.

Jansen will likely compete with Gosder Cherilus to start at right tackle, according to Cotsonika. If he doesn't start, he is an improvement to the team's depth on the offensive line.

“I want to come in and compete as hard as I can,” Jansen said. “If I end up getting some playing time, that’s great. If I can support the offensive line in whatever role, that’s great. But again, I’m a competitor. I want to come in and compete as hard as I can.”

Redskins close to signing Jeremy Bridges

According to the Washington Redskins' website, the team is close to signing offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges.
We’re trying to get things done with Bridges,” Zorn said. “He was one of the bright spots in these tryouts. We have to get him a physical.”
Bridges has played six years in the NFL including the past three with the Carolina Panthers, for whom he started 28 games.

The Redskins are also considering signing wide receivers Kelly Washington and D.J. Hackett.
“We’re going to talk about them,” Zorn said. “We’re already assured about Bridges. It’s different [with Washington and Hackett] because there are enough [wide receivers] to choose from. We’re not just choosing one guy."
Washington, the Bengals' third-round pick in 2003, has 73 career receptions for 896 yards and nine touchdowns. Hackett, the Seahawks' fifth-round pick in 2005, has 118 career receptions for 1575 yards and nine touchdowns.

Smoot about to treat Barnes like a rookie?

In the fifth round of this year's NFL draft, the Washington Redskins drafted cornerback Kevin Barnes.

Who?

Or, at least, that's what fellow Redskins' cornerback Fred Smoot said in response to Barnes' comments.

Per David Elfin of the Washington Times, Barnes said that 30-year-old Smoot is "getting a little bit older."
"They come in like that until they go to three days of [minicamp] and [then] they humble," Smoot said. "It don't bother me. I'm going to take him through some things. I haven't seen the guy. I don't even know his name and I love football so that tells you [something]. I know who's going to get drafted where. I didn't know the kid."
The Redskins' three-day mini-camp opens tomorrow.

Redskins' pick lies about why he was suspended

Washington Redskins fifth-round draft pick Cody Glenn came clean. Or, at least, half clean.

Nebraska suspended Glenn for three games last season. He told teams that he was suspended for selling tickets, but he has admitted he was suspended for something else.
"It's me being dumb, just trying to have people leave me alone," Glenn told the AP when asked today about why he gave the Washington media the story about the tickets. "It's something I said that I probably shouldn't have, looking at it now."
What is that something else? He didn't say, but that's likely to be the first question the Redskins (or other teams, if he gets released) will ask. The second question will be "why did you lie?"

An NFL source tells Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, "good luck whenever he gets waived."

Chase Daniel signs with Redskins

Undrafted Missouri QB Chase Daniel has signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins.
"Chris Meidt was the guy that worked me out at the combine, and he really liked me," Daniel said of the Redskins assistant coach. "I talked to [head] coach [Jim] Zorn a couple of times. I'm excited about the opportunity they presented."

"They have three quarterbacks, and any three can make the team," Daniel said, according to The Star. "I'm excited about what's going to happen."
The other Redskins' starting QB is (I guess until the next rumor - Cutler first, Sanchez second, who's next?) Jason Campbell. Todd Collins and Colt Brennan are backups.

In 2008, Daniel threw for 4335 yards (fourth in NCAA), 39 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. In his career, Daniel threw for 12515 yards, 101 touchdowns and 41 interceptions.

And with the 13th-overall pick...

The Washington Redskins have selected Brian Orakpo, DE from Texas.

The Redskins got a bargain at 13 to go along with their huge free-agent acquisition, Albert Haynesworth. Orakpo fills the need created by Jason Taylor's release.

Kedric Golston signs tender

Washington Redskins restricted free agent Kedric Golston has signed his tender offer and will earn a guaranteed salary of $1.54 million in 2009.

Golston, the Redskins sixth-round pick in 2006, started all 13 games he played last year and a total of 25 games in his three-year career.

In 2008, Golston had 28 tackles and two sacks.

Byron Leftwich talking to Redskins about contract

Free-agent QB Byron Leftwich, who was the back-up in Pittsburgh last year, met with the Washington Redskins on Friday.

Per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the two sides are in contract talks.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin would like to re-sign both free-agent back-up QBs from 2008 - Leftwich and Charlie Batch.

Leftwich threw passes in five separate games and finished with a QB rating of 104.3 in 2008. He threw for 303 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Redskins were actively pursuing Jay Cutler, who Denver traded to the Chicago Bears.

It's no secret that Leftwich wants the opportunity to become a starting QB again. If the 'Skins sign him, he may get his opportunity via an open QB competition this summer.

Titans ask NFL to look into tampering by 'Skins

By submitting newspaper and radio audio files to the NFL, the Tennessee Titans are asking that the NFL look into tampering by the Washington Redskins, who signed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth about 5 hours into free agency.

However, the $100 million man says he doesn't think that the Redskins tampered.
"All I know is the Redskins called my agent at 11:04 p.m. Nashville time and they started negotiating then,'' Haynesworth said last month. "They weren't anywhere close in the first couple of hours and then they got serious. Chad worked the deal then and it worked out.''
The NFL doesn't have any official comment on the matter.
"There are issues of tampering that come up from time to time and if we need to take some action then of course we announce that," [NFL Senior VP Greg] Aiello said. "Until then we don't comment on it.''
Whether the Redskins tampered or not, there was no way that the Titans were going to be able to come close to the money that was being thrown at Haynesworth, who was the Titans first-round pick in 2002.

But considering how much the Redskins gave up to get Haynesworth, the real question is was he worth the cost.

Chargers' Jeromey Clary receives most performance-based pay

The top earner in the NFL's performance-based pay system in 2008 was Jeromey Clary, who received $405,859 in additional compensation.

The performance-based pay system, which was negotiated into the collective bargaining agreement, determines additional compensation based on comparison of salary and playing time. In total, $105 million was awarded to NFL players in additional performance-based pay.

Clary, the Chargers' sixth-round pick in 2006, started all 16 games in 2008 for the Chargers.

After Clary, the next four highest recipients of performance-based pay were Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein ($348,134), Washington Redskins safety Chris Horton ($342,197), New Orleans Saints guard Carl Nicks ($335,033) and Cleveland Browns cornerback Brandon McDonald ($329,803).

In 2009, the performance-based pay is expected to increase by 5% to $3.5 million per team. In 2007, the league paid out $99 million and Willie Colon was the highest earner with $309,534 received.

Renaldo Wynn heading back to Washington

Defensive End Renaldo Wynn played for the Washington Redskins from 2002 to 2006. After spending the past two seasons with the Saints (2007) and the Giants (2008), Wynn will be back with the Redskins in 2009.

Wynn and the Redskins agreed to a one-year deal. In addition to Wynn, the Redskins are also interested in re-signing DE Phillip Daniels.

Selected in the first round of the 1997 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Wynn has 348 career tackles and 27 career sacks.

March 02, 2009

Redskins release Jason Taylor

Redskins DE Jason Taylor, who was due $8.5 million in 2009, was released by the Redskins after not accepting a workout provision. The team wanted Taylor to participate in 75% of the team's off-season workout program, but Taylor declined as his family lives in Miami. And he didn't want to be away from them for 8 weeks of the 13-week off-season program.

Last year, Taylor was acquired from the Dolphins when Phillip Daniels suffered a season-ending injury on the first day of training camp. The 'Fins received a 2nd-round pick in this year's draft and 6th-round pick in next year's draft as compensation.

Taylor, who was the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year, had a down year with 3.5 sacks. He battled injuries, but struggled, which was partly due to the scheme.

Last week, I wrote a post about Taylor's agent saying Taylor would be back this year. While Taylor struggled in 2008, the Redskins were planning on utilizing him better in the system. So the last sentence in that post read:
"The Redskins are expected to give him more freedom in 2009."
Yep. That pretty much sums it up.

The spending continues in nation's capital

The Washington Redskins kicked off the free agency period by re-signing DeAngelo Hall to a 6-year, $54 million contract. That didn't merit a press conference because of what they did 5 hours later when they signed Albert Haynesworth to the richest contract for a defensive player in the history of the NFL. Haynesworth became the first non-QB to receive a $100 million contract, which spans 7 seasons.

Last night, the Redskins added another free agent, but this time on offense. Guard Derrick Dockery, who played for the Redskins from 2003-06, agreed to a 5-year contract worth roughly $27 million. The guaranteed portion of the contract is $8.5 million.

The past 2 seasons, Dockery played for the Buffalo Bills, who released him before the free-agency period began.

Yesterday, Dockery visited with the Detroit Lions, who made him offer, however decided to come back to Washington.

Redskins to release Shawn Springs

The Washington Redskins spent a lot of money in the first day of free agency. They signed DeAngelo Hall to a 6-year deal worth $54 million and Albert Haynesworth to a 7-year deal worth $100 million.

The Redskins have informed CB Shawn Springs that they will release him.
"They did what's best for the team, and I'm happy for them," Springs said in a telephone conversation. "I'm going to miss my friends there, but as long as it makes the team better, I understand. I'm a true fan of the sport."
Some teams that might be interested in Springs are the Pats, Cowboys and Ravens.

For the 2nd time in 3 seasons, Springs played only 9 games last year. He finished with 36 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception.

Fat Albert's pockets are over-flowing; the $100-million man

Free-agent DT Albert Haynesworth has become the first-ever defensive player to sign a $100-million contract. It was reported soon into free agency that his phone was "blowing up" with offers. The best was from the Washington Redskins for the 7-year deal.

Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the contract includes $41 million guaranteed in the first 3 years of the deal. And the deal could reach $115 million.

Per John Clayton of ESPN, the final decision came down to the Redskins offer and an offer from the Buccaneers.

One of the biggest question marks surrounding Haynesworth was how will be play when he's not playing for a contract. He was designated with the franchise tag by the Titans the past 2 seasons so both years, in which he absolutely dominated, were contract years.

Haynesworth led DTs in sacks last season (8.5) and his absence over the past 2 seasons - 5 games (1-4) - showed his value to the Titans.

With the exception of his rookie season (2002), Haynesworth hasn't played a full season. The Titans selected Haynesworth with the 15th overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft.

We'll see if Haynesworth remains the dominant DT that he has been recently or if he can put together 16-game seasons for the 'Skins. However, it's hard to believe that he will live up to the size of this contract.

Chris Canty to visit with Redskins Friday

If they are not the favorite, the Washington Redskins are one of the favorites to sign the biggest defensive free agent in football. According to ESPN's John Clayton, it will "be no problem for him to get $15-16 million a year" for Albert Haynesworth.

In case the Redskins don't land the biggest free agent fish, they will visit with DE Chris Canty on Friday.

But Matt Mosley of ESPN doesn't think Canty would be a good fit for the Redskins since Canty has been playing in a 3-4 scheme. He thinks he would fit better with the 'Fins.

The 'Skins ranked 28th in the league in sacks in 2008. In his 4 seasons with the Cowboys, Canty, who was selected by the Cowboys in the 4th round of the 2005 NFL draft, has 10 career sacks including 3 sacks in 2008.

'Skins to pursue Derrick Dockery

The Washington Redskins have already made a big deal by signing CB DeAngelo Hall to a 6-year contract.

According to Matt Mosley of ESPN, the Redskins will pursue a deal with guard Derrick Dockery, who was released by the Buffalo Bills Thursday.

Dockery began his NFL career with the Redskins and was drafted by the team in the third round of the 2003 NFL draft.

DeAngelo Hall gets 6-year, $54 million deal

The Washington Redskins were the first to make a splash in free agency by re-signing CB DeAngelo Hall.

The 6-year contract is worth $54 million including $22.5 million of guaranteed money.

Hall, who was released by the Oakland Raiders mid-season, had 5 interceptions in 2008 including 2 picks in the 7 games he spent with the Redskins. He has 22 interceptions in his 5-year career.

Agent says Jason Taylor will be back with 'Skins

Washington Redskins DE Jason Taylor will return to the Redskins this season for the last year of his contract. Taylor, who is due a salary of $8.5 million, was acquired from Miami for a 2nd-round draft pick this year and a 6th-round pick in 2010.

The Redskins traded for Taylor on the day DE Phillip Daniels suffered a season-ending injury. However, Taylor was slowed by injuries himself.
"It's tough to play when you're injured, when you can't do the things you always have, and Jason was just dealing with a lot last year," said Taylor's agent, Gary Wichard. "But it is what it is. That's just part of this game, and Jason never made excuses. He's working to be the same Pro Bowler he always was, and he's ready to go."
Last season, Taylor had only 3.5 sacks, which was the 2nd-lowest of his career. He had 2.5 sacks in 1999.

Taylor has 120.5 career sacks in his 12-year career and won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award in 2006.

It wasn't only injuries that slowed Taylor though. Switching to a 4-3 scheme that emphasizes stopping the run and that did not give Taylor much flexibility hurt as well.

The Redskins are expected to give him more freedom in 2009.

Redskins cut Marcus Washington

The Washington Redskins released LB Marcus Washington yesterday. Washington was due a base salary of $4.5 million this season.

LB H.B. Blades, who started 4 games when Washington was hurt last year, will likely be the starter.
"It's going to be different without Marcus - not just in the linebacker room, but for the whole defense," said Blades. "He was always upbeat, no matter what was happening. None of the rest of us are that boisterous."

"Marcus gave me a lot of tips that have helped me get more comfortable at the [strong side]," he said. "This is my opportunity, and I'm going to work as hard as I can to show the Redskins that I should be the starter."
With various injuries over the past 2 seasons, Washington had 48 tackles and 5 sacks in 2007 and 44 tackles and no sacks in 2008.

Blades, selected in the 6th round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Redskins, had 60 tackles in 2008.

2009 Hall of Fame inductees

The 2009 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame were announced today. They are Bob Hayes, Randall McDaniel, Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas, Ralph Wilson, and Rod Woodson.

This was the first ballot for Rod Woodson and Bruce Smith.

Here are some quotes from today's announcement ceremony:
"Just thinking about my father and all the sacrifices he and my mother made when I was a child growing up to be a man," Smith added, tearfully. "How he wanted me to have a life better than he had. I just wish he was here. He would be extremely proud of this day."

"It's a great honor, a great feat," said Woodson. "I'm still pinching myself a little bit, thinking it's surreal."

"Derrick Thomas was the cornerstone of the modern era of the Kansas City Chiefs and one of the most feared performers of his era," Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said. "Every head coach and offensive coordinator who faced the Chiefs during the 1990s knew when they came to Arrowhead Stadium they had to account for Derrick Thomas."

"Randall was a beast," Smith said. "Once he locked on to you, you couldn't go anywhere."

In a statement, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, "This is a deserving honor for one of the Cowboys' most and truly gifted stars. We all know he changed the game on the field, but he also brought a unique star quality to the NFL that helped make professional football the most popular sport in the world."
The finalists that weren't inducted are: Cris Carter, Dermontti Dawson, Richard Dent, Russ Grimm, Claude Humphrey, Cortez Kennedy, Bob Kuechenberg, John Randle, Andre Reed, Shannon Sharpe and Paul Tagliabue.

The 2009 class will be enshrined in Canton, OH on August 8th. See past Hall of Fame classes.

Week 17 playoff scenarios

I can't recall an NFL season in recent memory with so many important matchups to decide entry into the post-season party like we have had last week and this week. Then again, I can't remember what I did 2 hours ago.

In any event, let's take a look at the current playoff picture. For simplicity sake, we ignore the possibility of a second tie this season.

Teams fall into 4 categories - playoff bound/seed locked, playoff bound/seed TBD, on playoff bubble and eliminated.

AFC Teams:

Playoff bound/seed locked:
Tennessee Titans (1), Pittsburgh Steelers (2), Indianapolis Colts (5)

Playoff bound/seed TBD:
none

On playoff bubble:
Miami Dolphins: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Jets. A Dolphins' loss eliminates them from the playoffs.

New England Patriots: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Bills and Jets win over Dolphins. Bill Belichick stopped short of saying he'd root for the Jets, but that's what he will be doing. If the Dolphins and Pats win, the Pats will get the 6 seed with a Ravens' loss.

New York Jets: Win AFC East and clinch 3 seed with win over Dolphins and Pats' loss to Buffalo. Loss to Dolphins eliminates Jets' hopes. If the Jets and Pats win, the Jets will get the 6 seed if the Ravens lose.

Baltimore Ravens: Clinch 6 seed with a win over Jaguars or a Patriots loss to Buffalo and a Jets loss to Dolphins.

Denver Broncos: Win AFC West and clinch 4 seed with win over Chargers. Loss eliminates Broncos.

San Diego Chargers: same as Denver Broncos.

Eliminated:
Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders

NFC Playoff Picture

Earlier in the week, we took a look at the AFC playoff picture. Since then, the Colts have beaten the Jaguars to clinch the 5 seed in the AFC. That means that the Ravens and the non-division winners out of the Jets, Patriots and Dolphins will battle it out for the 6th seed in the AFC.

Let's shift our focus to the NFC. With 2 weeks to play, here are the current seedings in the NFC:
1. New York Giants (11-3)
2. Carolina Panthers (11-3)
3. Minnesota Vikings (9-5)
4. Arizona Cardinals (8-6)
5. Dallas Cowboys (9-5)
6. Atlanta Falcons (9-5)
NFC East:

New York Giants (11-3): With a win tomorrow night against the Panthers, the Giants lock up home-field advantage. If the Giants lose and the Vikings lose to the Falcons, the Giants will clinch the #2 seed and first-round bye. If the Giants lose and the Vikings win, the teams face off in Minnesota next week for the #2 seed.

Dallas Cowboys (9-5): The Cowboys are in as the 5 seed if they win out against the Ravens and Eagles. The Falcons and Bucs have identical records to the Cowboys and the Eagles trail by a half-game. The Bears trail the Cowboys by one game.

Philadelphia Eagles (8-5-1): The Eagles trail the Cowboys, Falcons and Bucs by a half-game. They face the Cowboys next week. If they win out, they are in provided that the Falcons and/or Bucs lose (or tie) at least one of their remaining 2 games.

Washington Redskins (7-7): While the Redskins are not mathematically-eliminated, they need much help with 2 weeks remaining. They need the Eagles, Bucs and Falcons to all lose their remaining games and the Bears to lose at least 1 game and win their 2 remaining games.

Jim Zorn should be back in 2009 unless...

...Bill Cowher is willing to take over.

Althoug the Washington Redskins got off to a great start (6-2), most (including me) expected them to finish last in the NFC East.

Vinny Cerrato was on ESPN Radio and mentioned that Zorn's future hasn't been discussed (which I doubt), but here's what he said:
"In this building, that question has never even been brought up," Cerrato, the executive vice president of football operations, said on his radio show on ESPN 980 in Washington. "It's never even been discussed."

"It's business as usual in this building," Cerrato said.
Earlier this week, Zorn pointed his finger at himself. While I respect his candor and accountability, perhaps it's not the wisest move considering the owner's history of changing head coaches (Joe Gibbs excluded) like underwear.
"Where do I need to improve?" Zorn said. "Not only on Sunday, but on Wednesday, on Monday, all the days, all the game-planning, all the paying attention to detail. I need to make good use of this time and I will -- because it hurts. I just feel like the worst coach in America, to have to lose the way we're losing. ... I feel sick to my stomach even thinking about having to go and do this kind of evaluation."
At 7-7, the 'Skins host the Eagles this week and then head to San Francisco to play the 49ers next week. They will likely finish 8-8.

Instead of replacing Zorn or Zorn blaming himself, I think Zorn should lighten his workload. Despite being head coach, he is also calling the plays and working closely with QB Jason Campbell.

Sammy Baugh: greatest ever?

Sammy Baugh is a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class. He was the sole living member of that class, but Baugh passed away Wednesday at 94 years old.

The NFL Network named Sammy Baugh the Most Versatile Player of all time.
"There's nobody any better than Sam Baugh was in pro football," Don Maynard, a fellow West Texas Hall of Famer who played for Baugh, said in a 2002 interview. "When I see somebody picking the greatest player around, to me, if they didn't go both ways, they don't really deserve to be nominated. I always ask, 'Well, how'd he do on defense? How was his punting?'"
In 1943, Baugh led the NFL in passing, interceptions (as a DB) and punting. In fact, his single season mark for punting average (51.4 yards) still stands today. He had one game where he threw for 4 touchdowns and intercepted 4 passes on defense.

Baugh threw in an era were the forward pass was rare yet still holds the Redskins franchise record for most passing TDs (187).

It's highly subjective and there are many great players in the history of the NFL. Iin my opinion, Baugh's versatility and greatness at all the positions he played makes him the greatest player ever.

Clinton Portis calls out Jim Zorn

In the first 8 games of the season, Clinton Portis had 20+ carries in every game. During that span, the Redskins were 6-2. Since then, Portis has 20+ carries in 1 game, which was their only win in the past 5 games.
"Either you feel like you need to sever ties with me -- split ties with me -- but don't sit here and throw me out like I don't pay attention, like I don't know what's going on, like I'm making mistakes, like I'm the problem," Portis said. "It is what it is, bro."

"Outside of Jim Zorn and the coaches on that team and maybe the quarterbacks, I guarantee you I know our system better than anybody else," Portis said. "I guarantee you when we go into blitz pickup, I don't miss my man. So I don't know what it is. If anybody's got a problem with me, they need to talk to me. I don't know what's going on."
Portis has heart and is a tough player. He wants to play and I can respect that. But I remember John Madden talking about Portis during the game and how Portis told Madden that his hands were the only part of his body that didn't hurt.

Although Portis called out Zorn but Zorn exercised some discretion in his response.
"He's a big part of our offense, and he's sitting on the bench," Zorn said. "He's going to feel like he's benched. I don't blame him for that. ... He's an every-down back, that's the way he sees himself and that's the way we see him. He needs to be on the field. I felt the same way when I played."
The Redskins are currently trail the Cowboys and Falcons for the last wildcard spot by 1 game and half a game behind the Eagles. The Saints and the Bears both have identical records as the Redskins.

The Redskins face the Bengals, Eagles and 49ers to close out the season.

Redskins LT Chris Samuels out for season

Q: How do you know your offense is struggling?
A: The only 3 teams that have scored fewer points than you are the Raiders, Rams and Bengals. And the Lions' offense has put up as many points than you (16.8 ppg).

Q: Who are you?
A: You are the Washington Redskins.

Now life is going to get even more difficult for the Redskins, who are 7-6 and losers of 4 out of their last 5. Perennial Pro Bowl Left Tackle Chris Samuels suffered a season-ending injury last night. Plus, starting Right Tackle Jon Jansen suffered a sprained MCL although he hasn't been ruled out against the Bengals Sunday.

Stephon Heyer will fill in for Chris Samuels at LT and, if Jansen can't go Sunday, Jason Fabini will play RT.

The Redskins are now in last place in the NFC East, but are only 1 game out of the wildcard with 3 weeks to go. Their remaining games are against the Bengals and 49ers on the road and the Eagles at home.

A look at the NFC playoff picture

As I did with every AFC team, we will take a look at all teams playoff aspirations for the NFC.

Here are the current NFC standings:
1. New York Giants (11-1)
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3)
3. Minnesota Vikings (7-5)
4. Arizona Cardinals (7-5)
5. Carolina Panthers (9-3)
6. Atlanta Falcons (8-4)
NFC East:

New York Giants (11-1): The Super Bowl champs are clearly (and unfortunately as a Cowboys fan) the team to beat in the NFC/NFL even without Plax. The Giants schedule is tough (PHI, at DAL, CAR, at MIN), but I can't see the Bucs/Panthers making up a 2-game deficit.

Dallas Cowboys (8-4): Entering the season, the Cowboys were the consensus pick in the NFC to reach the Super Bowl. Now with a month to go and perhaps the league's most challenging schedule (at PIT, NYG, BAL, at PHI), they would be on the outside looking in as the 7th team even though they share the same record with the Falcons.

Washington Redskins (7-5): The Redskins have stumbled lately losing 4 of their last 5. With the NFC South likely to have (at least) 1 team make playoffs, the 'Skins are fighting an uphill battle. If the 'Skins can beat the Ravens this week, they finish with a relatively easy final 3 games (at CIN, PHI, at SF).

Philadelphia Eagles (6-5-1): After bouncing back against the Cardinals on Thanksgiving, the Eagles need to bounce back against division rivals. They are 0-3 vs NFC East on season, but get 3 more shots in remaining 4 weeks.

Both Jacobs and Portis to play

Both Brandon Jacobs and Clinton Portis will play in today's game.

Jacobs, who missed last week's game, will play today against the Redskins. He has 879 yards / 11 TDs on the season despite getting over 20 carries only twice. He had 21 carries for 116 yards against the Redskins in week 1.

Clinton Portis, who was questionable, had 143 yards on 29 carries last week against the Seahawks. On the season, Portis has 1206 rushing yards and 7 TDs. He has had 20+ carries every week except 2 weeks (both losses). In fact, he has 100+ yards every week in the past 8 weeks with the exception of those 2 games in which he had fewer than 20 carries.

Shaun Alexander cut by Redskins

After playing just 5 games with the Washington Redskins, Shaun Alexander was cut by the 'Skins.

In his limited action, he had 24 yards on 11 carries. Half of those carries (6) came against the Detroit Lions and he only gained 11 yards (1.8 ypc). A 1.8 ypc against the winless Lions, who have the worst rushing defense in the NFL, is the true test of whether a RB is washed up.

It's amazing to think that Alexander had 1,880 rushing yards and 27 rushing TDs and led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl in 2005. He won the NFL MVP Award in 2005 as well.

In his career, Alexander has 9453 rushing yards and 100 rushing TDs. He also has 215 receptions for 1520 yards and 12 receiving TDs.

Clinton Portis "50-50" for Cowboys game

Both the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys had a bye in week 10. Although I can't see Clinton Portis missing a game as important as their matchup with Dallas, there is a chance that he'll need another week of rest.
"He's questionable," Zorn said. "I'd say there's a 50-50 chance. I'm hoping that he'll be even better than that. Another day of rest, and then we'll see how he comes in on Wednesday. ... We've got to get the pain out of the knee and see how he progresses along."
On the season, Clinton Portis has 995 yards rushing. In the Redskins' week 4 win over the Cowboys, Clinton Portis began a 5-game, 100-yard rushing per game streak. Portis had 121 yards on 21 carries in that game.

Deangelo Hall signs 1-yr deal w/Redskins

The Oakland Raiders waived Deangelo Hall to rid themselves of his $72 million contract. Or, at least, all but the $8 million he stole earned. Since he cleared waivers, he was able to negotiate with any team and at least 15 teams were interested.

The Washington Redskins and Hall agreed to a $472,000 contract for the remainder of the season.

As teams seemed to pick on Hall, Warren Sapp's description of Hall seemed to fit while Hall was in Oakland.
DeAngelo Hall is the flashiest, burnt-up corner in the history of the game. He gets burnt more than anyone else, and he all of a sudden is this great Pro Bowl cover corner. I never saw that in DeAngelo Hall.
The Redskins are on a bye this week, but face the Cowboys, who are also on a bye, in week 11. The last time Hall and T.O. faced each other, there was the infamous spitting incident. Add the importance of the game and the hostility and hatred on this rivalry, arguably the best in the NFL, and I think you better "getcha popcorn ready."

Straight A's on mid-year review for rookie head coaches

Both the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins have first-year head coaches in John Harbaugh and Jim Zorn. While they are doing better than I expected, I expected the other two first-year head coaches to really struggle and need a lot of time to turnaround their organizations.

I was wrong. Tony Sparano, head coach of the Miami Dolphins, is 4-4 and Mike Smith, head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, is 5-3 heading into week 10.

Tony Sparano was brought to Miami from the Dallas Cowboys by Bill Parcells. And you can argue that the Tuna is the "coach," but Sparano has the respect of the Dolphins players. The Dolphins are 4-4 and a game out of first in the ultra-tight AFC East race. If they didn't give up a touchdown with 3 seconds to go in the Texans game, they would be in a 4-way tie for first.

In this copycat league, other teams are copying the Dolphins and employing some form of the "Wildcat" offense that the Dolphins successfully used to shock the Pats. The way that Sparano's presence is felt is where it is not. The Dallas Cowboys offensive line, led by several Pro-Bowlers and Sparano last year, look awful in 2008 without Sparano to keep them focused.

Mike Smith inherited a mess. Last year's coach, Bobby Petrino quit 13 games into the season like a coward. Mike Vick was sent to prison for his involvement in the dog-fighting scandal. Although the Falcons had more wins (4) than the Dolphins (1) did in 2007, you could argue that the Falcons were a worse team.

Fast forward a season and Smith has a rookie QB (Matt Ryan) playing like a poised veteran and Michael "The Burner" Turner, a first-time, every-week starter at RB. Ryan has only thrown 5 INTs in 8 games. Turner is averaging almost 100 yards rushing per game. Roddy White has picked up where he left off last year. In the past 6 games, he's had at least 5 receptions every week and 4 100-yard receiving games.

Here are the current standings through week 10:

-- Jim Zorn, Washington Redskins (6-3, 2nd place in the NFC East)
-- John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens (5-3, 2nd place in the AFC North)
-- Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons (5-3, 3rd place in the NFC South)
-- Tony Sparano, Miami Dolphins (4-4, 4th place in the AFC East)

Santonio Holmes to start MNF vs Redskins

Santonio Holmes, who wasn't suspended but instead inactive for last week's game vs the Giants after getting caught with marijuana, will start for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they face the Redskins. Holmes has a November 24th court date.
"As a football team and an organization, in terms of our view of the situation, we've laid it to bed," Tomlin said Tuesday. "Satisfactory action has been taken from our standpoint. ... For us, we're moving forward."
On the season, Holmes has 22 receptions for 360 yards and 1 TD.

NFC East Preview

DALLAS COWBOYS
Prediction: 11-5 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: Last year, the Cowboys tied a franchise record 13 regular season victories, led the NFL with most players named to Pro Bowl (13) and extended their playoff victory drought (longest in team history - 1996). While the NFC East is clearly the most competitive division in the NFC and arguably in the NFL, the Cowboys are generally regarded as the best team in the NFC. No arguments here. With the addition of Adam (don't call me "Pacman") Jones and 1st-round rookie Mike Jenkins to the secondary, the Cowboys have one of the Top 5 secondaries in the NFL. Anthony Spencer, once declared the toughest opponent Joe Thomas had to block when both were playing Big Ten Football, is poised to have a breakout year. The Cowboys lack depth at WR and that weakness is glaring heading into Cleveland week 1 with Miles Austin and Sam Hurd out and Isaiah Stanback to play with a harness to protect his separated shoulder. The 'Boys will win the NFC East again in 2008 and might even win a playoff game (or more) to boot.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Cowboys had no 1,000-yard receivers from 2000-2004 yet have had 2 1,000-yard receivers in both of the past 2 seasons.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 134-122 (.523)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (8): at Green Bay, vs Washington, vs Tampa Bay, at Giants, at Washington, vs Seattle, at Pittsburgh, vs Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 31 wins (10.3 per season)

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Prediction: 10-6 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: Donovan McNabb finished 2007 strongly when he was finally healthy (816 passing yards in his final 3 games of season). With Asante Samuel added to the group of CBs, the Eagles have arguably the best trio of CBs in football with Sheldon Brown and Lito Shepard. They should easily exceed their league-worst (tied with Houston and Pittsburgh) 11 INTs in 2007. The offensive line is a little bit of a question mark with Shaun Andrews battling depression and Tackles Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan battling Father Time. Many are predicting the Eagles as a sleeper team to win the East, but I think that's going a little too far. A 10-win season with a playoff berth isn't unreasonable though.

Interesting Stat/Fact: The Eagles were the only team in the NFL to not score a defensive TD in 2007.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 133-123 (.520)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (8): at Dallas, vs Pittsburgh, vs Washington, at Seattle, vs Giants, at Giants, at Washington, vs Dallas

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 24 wins (8.0 per season)

NEW YORK GIANTS
Prediction: 8-8 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey had the potential to be big problems for the defending Super Bowl champs. However, Burress just got a contract extension tonight and Shockey was traded to the Saints. The 2 question marks for this team is Eli Manning's ability to continue to progress from his post-season run and the effectiveness ofl the Giants pass rush. The Giants lost Osi Umenyiora for the season due to injury and tried (unsuccessfully) to talk Michael Strahan, now Fox Sports analyst, out of retirement. Justin Tuck was expected to take on a bigger role in 2008, but now he's going to be asked to carry the DL. The Giants lost 22 of their league-leading 53 sacks with Strahan's retirement and Osi's injury. With defenses having to contend with those two, how many of Tuck's 10 sacks would he have had if he faced consistent double teams? I guess we'll find out in 2008.

Interesting Stat/Fact: Eli Manning has thrown 42 TDs to 23 INTs in 25 games played during weeks 1-8, but has thrown 35 TDs to 41 INTs in 31 games during weeks 9-16.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 133-123 (.520)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): vs Washington, vs Seattle, at Pittsburgh, at Dallas, at Washington, at Dallas

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 29 wins (9.7 per season)

WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Prediction: 8-8 | Team Home | Team Forum | Team Schedule

Overview: Jim Zorn was hired as the Redskins Offensive Coordinator early in the pre-season. In fact, he was named OC before the 'Skins selected their Head Coach. Then, in a surprising move, Zorn was promoted to HC in the shortest tenure of an OC promoted to HC in NFL history. In another surprising move, the Redskins signed Jason Taylor, when they lost Phillip Daniels to injury. The Taylor move will give the Redskins a much-improved ability to put pressure on the QB. However, their WR corps is average and the rookies they drafted have been banged up. In a division as talented as the NFC East, I can't see the Redskins making the post-season in 2008.

Interesting Stat/Fact: Ladell Betts finished 2006 with 666 rushing yards on 132 carries in December only. Last season, he was only given 93 carries and finished with 335 yards.

Strength of Schedule: 2007 opponents were 134-122 (.523)

2007 Playoff Teams on Schedule (6): at Giants, at Dallas, vs Pittsburgh, vs Dallas, at Seattle, at Giants

# of Wins Past 3 Years: 24 wins (8.0 per season)

Kobe Bryant, Ronaldinho and Jason Campbell

What do they all have in common? (And it's not that they are three men who haven't been in Cliff Clavern's kitchen.) They are featured in very cool commercials found on You Tube.

Here is Jason Campbell's very cool NFL.com commercial:

If that doesn't make you want to play fantasy football and draft Jason Campbell, I don't know what will.

Check out this one of Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho hitting the the crossbar multiple times:

And who can forget Kobe Bryant jumping the car:
