Washington Commanders Mock Draft Roundup 4.0
Throughout the year and leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft, we will update our Washington Commanders Mock Draft Roundup showing picks for the Washington Commanders from several prominent sites and draft analysts.
The following are picks in recent mock drafts for the Commanders:
CBS Sports - Kyle Stackpole (3/29)
2. J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan
NFL Media reported earlier this week that in talking to executives of other teams who know new
Commanders GM Adam Peters well, the popular answer to whom they'll select at No. 2 overall is J.J. McCarthy. Let me make this clear: I'm fully aware it's smokescreen season and that the rumors will be flying all the way until draft night. But for the sake of this mock, let's explore this possibility. McCarthy to Washington.
NFL.com - Eric Edholm (3/29)
2. J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan
A week ago, I went on DC radio and relayed how people around the league (not affiliated with the Commanders) thought
Jayden Daniels might have a better shot of being the second pick than
Drake Maye. Now I am pivoting again. The groundswell of McCarthy-to-Washington rumors has only grown in recent days. It won't surprise me if J.J. ends up being the culture changer GM Adam Peters is seeking.
The Ringer - Danny Kelly (3/28)
2. Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
The
Commanders have taken a similar tack to the
Bears in free agency, bolstering their skill position groups with experienced veterans who can ease the transition for an incoming rookie signal caller. Washington added running back
Austin Ekeler and tight end Zach Ertz and signed a couple of offensive linemen, including center Tyler Biadasz, bolstering an offense that already included receivers
Terry McLaurin and
Jahan Dotson. That should help Daniels hit the ground running.
NFL.com - Charles Davis (3/28)
2. Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina
There are plenty of reasons for the Commanders to choose LSU QB Jayden Daniels here, but Maye's ability to throw downfield will appeal to new GM Adam Peters.
CBS Sports - Pete Prisco (3/28)
2. Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
They are definitely taking a quarterback and Jayden Daniels should be the pick. He's the most-improved player I've ever seen in the draft process. That matters.
ESPN - Matt Miller (3/27)
2. Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
Everything is new in Washington -- ownership, general manager and coach. And there will be a new quarterback, too. Daniels' dual-threat ability is an ideal fit for new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's version of the Air Raid offense. With back-to-back seasons of over 1,000 rushing yards and a nearly perfect QBR of 99.5 on passes over 20 yards, Daniels would thrive with wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson opening things up down the field. The Commanders will have a tough decision to make between Daniels and North Carolina's Drake Maye, but I see Daniels as the clear-cut QB2. He is also ready to play immediately after starting 55 games in college; Maye might have more upside, but Daniels is ready to excel right now.
ESPN - Mike Tannenbaum (3/26)
2. Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina
Maye has ideal size at 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds and shows really good pocket movement. He can make all the throws and has a good release, executing with accuracy and anticipation. I was impressed with what he was able to accomplish last season after losing receiver
Josh Downs to the NFL, throwing for 3,608 yards. His traits remind me of
Justin Herbert. And giving Maye an offense that has Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Austin Ekeler and
Brian Robinson Jr. should help him be productive in Year 1.
