Week 3 NFL Picks Against the Spread (Trifone)

Here are my Week 3 NFL picks against the spread:

Baltimore Ravens +2.5 (over Houston Texans)

The Texans have been fortunate to come out of their first two weeks 2-0. Both games required big comebacks against teams that were largely considered inferior.

I don't particularly love the Ravens this year, but I do think that the reigning Super Bowl Champions will defend home field here and hold off Houston. This would be a 3-unit bet on a 5-point scale.

New York Giants -2 (over Carolina Panthers)

The Giants have turned the ball over excessively in the first two games of the year, and it's no surprise that as a result, they are 0-2. I don't think many people expected them to beat Denver, even in New York, anyway, and the Cowboys game was pretty much a coin flip. The Giants, however, are one of the better, if not the best 0-2 team in the leauge, and I expect the skid to stop at Carolina.

I was high on the Panthers going into the season, but they just continue to lose close games. You have to be able to adjust your opinion to the output on the field, and although the Panthers have been able to play many teams close going back to last year, they don't yet seem like they're ready to get over the hump.

I like the Giants in a pretty close one, something akin to 24-20. This would be a 4-unit bet.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers +7 (over New England Patriots)

Tampa Bay has lost two early games on last-second field goals. They probably should have beat the Jets Week 1, but beating New Orleans Week 2 would have definitely been considered an upset. The Patriots, on the other hand, are 2-0, but have not been playing good football.

It's hard to look at a Tom Brady and Bill Belichick-led team, and call them overrated, but that's exactly what they are. The offense is lacking their usual weapons, and they have not showed that they're on the same page yet. The Patriots have the potential to be one of the best teams in the AFC, but right now, they're just not.

I'm not bold enough to call for the outright upset, but it wouldn't surprise me. I'd take the points here, and this would be a 4-unit bet.
