Week 13 NFL Picks Against the Spread (Trifone)

Here are my Week 13 NFL picks against the spread:

Green Bay Packers +6.5 (over Detroit Lions)

Matt Flynn is back in Green Bay, and his relative success in the short time we saw him this past weekend is a true testament to how terrible it is for a quarterback in Oakland, where Flynn looked just awful. Flynn had two starts in Green Bay the last two years. The first he played terrific against a Patriots team that was among the best in the league. The second, he threw for six TDs against the Lions.

I'm not expecting even close to the same performance, but the NFC North has done everything they can to keep the Packers in it while Aaron Rodgers is out. Although they've lost three straight, they're just a half-game out of the division lead. The Lions are one of the most inconsistent teams in the league.

Even at home, I don't like them laying almost a touchdown to a division rival.

Oakland Raiders +9.5 (over Dallas Cowboys)

I can't believe I'm picking a team who's starting quarterback is Matt McGloin, but I am. The Cowboys are coming off a huge win over the Giants to remain in a tie atop the division. I like them to keep winning on Thursday, but Dallas tends to keep games close.

They might just have to come from behind to win this one, which doesn't bode well for a cover. The Raiders, on the other hand, have been scrappy and competitive in most of their games this year. I think this spread should be closer to 6.5, so I'll take the 9.5 and run with it.

Pittsburgh Steelers +3 (over Baltimore Ravens)

These games almost always end with a field goal, so I think there's a reasonable chance for a tie. That said, the Steelers could certainly lose here and still cover, in a 16-14 type of game.

Pittsburgh started off the season as poorly as they could have, but regardless, they find themselves in the mix for the last playoff spot. I don't know that you can give them that many chances before they finally take advantage.

The Ravens got an easy win this past weekend, but the Jets putrid offense was mostly to blame for that. Baltimore has not impressed me this year, and I think the Steelers are the better team right now.
