2020 NFL Power Rankings: Detroit Lions

Throughout the 2020 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Here is where the Detroit Lions rank in terms of average, best and worst:

Below you will find a Week 2 roundup for the Lions in our consensus 2020 NFL Power Rankings.

The Athletic -- Rank: 24

What we learned: Their fans could use some socially-distanced hugs this week. They managed to blow a 23-6 fourth-quarter lead to Trubisky, and after the game, Matt Patricia felt the need to remind everyone about his glory days with the Patriots. From The Athletics Nick Baumgardner: "Asked if his coaching style has anything to do with this troubling trend, Patricia fired back -- citing the call he made at the goal line in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLIX, standing next to Bill Belichick, that resulted in Malcolm Butlers championship-sealing interception for the Patriots."

"I dont think so," a stern-faced Patricia said after a crushing 27-23 loss to the Chicago Bears that sent him to 0-5 against the Lions divisional rival. "I think Ive got probably one of the biggest plays in the fourth quarter in the history of the NFL, where I think I did a pretty good job.

"I dont think its that."

I dont want to crush a guy for one bad quote, but cmon man. That nonsense isnt going to make anyone feel better. You have to feel for rookie DAndre Swift, who dropped the potential game-winning touchdown with seven seconds left. Hopefully that will prove to be a bad moment in a successful career. But overall, that was just about as gut-wrenching a loss as you can have in Week 1.

CBS Sports -- Rank: 26

Much like last season, they blew a good lead in the opener. The defense made Mitch Trubisky look good. That's not a good look.

USA Today -- Rank: 23

RB Adrian Peterson tends to make a good first impression, averaging 88.8 rushing yards when debuting for the five NFL teams he's played for.

ESPN -- Rank: 25

Best rookie debut: RG Jonah Jackson
This is largely due to usage. First-rounder Jeff Okudah didn't play. Second-rounder D'Andre Swift dropped a game-winning touchdown pass. Fifth-rounder Quintez Cephus caught only three of 10 targets. Third-rounder Julian Okwara and sixth-rounder John Penisini didn't record a stat. But Jackson played the entire game for the Lions, who ran the ball well -- gaining 138 rushing yards. Matthew Stafford was sacked only once (although Jackson might have been the culprit on allowing the sack) and largely had time to throw. It's something to build on for Jackson for sure. -- Michael Rothstein

NFL.com -- Rank: 28

Just a horrendous setback for the Lions, who melted down in the fourth quarter and allowed a Bears team led by Mitchell Trubisky to steal a win in the opener at Ford Field. According to Next Gen Stats, Detroit's win probability was at 98.3 percent late in the final stanza, but the Lions -- man, the Lions -- they're just one of those teams that always finds a way. Allowing Trubisky to throw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter was bad; D'Andre Swift's egregious drop as he backpedaled into the end zone in the final seconds was supernatural in its ghoulishness. These are the rare types of stomach-punch losses that can submarine an entire season.
