2021 NFL Power Rankings: New York Jets

Throughout the 2021 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Here is where the New York Jets rank in terms of average, best and worst:

Below you will find a Week 5 roundup for the Jets in our consensus 2021 NFL Power Rankings.

ESPN -- Rank: 29

Biggest surprise: Defense has overachieved

Why it's a surprise: The defense ranks in the top half of the league in points and yards allowed despite some tough circumstances. Top pass-rusher Carl Lawson was lost to a season-ending injury in the preseason, linebacker Jarrad Davis (ankle) still hasn't played, free safety Lamarcus Joyner suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1 and three rookies are starting. Talk about adversity. Thanks to good coaching, plus terrific starts by LB C.J. Mosley and DT Quinnen Williams, the Jets' defense has managed to hold it together. -- Rich Cimini

NFL.com -- Rank: 28

Zach Wilson made several throws to excite the Jets and their fanbase in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win over the Titans at MetLife Stadium, but one stood out above the rest: With the game tied at 17 in the fourth quarter, Wilson rolled to his right on a naked bootleg and spotted Corey Davis downfield. Wilson, seeing that the Titans' deep safety had drifted out of position, motioned to his wide receiver to go deep, then delivered a perfect strike for a 53-yard touchdown. The play showed off Wilson's improvisational skill and next-level arm talent, and instantly refilled the well of Jets fan optimism that had dried up over three losses to start the season. Said Robert Saleh of his young QB: "I think he was awesome."

CBS Sports -- Rank: 30

It looks like Zack Wilson seemed to find some things against the Titans in the second half. That could be the start of him gaining confidence in a big way.

USA Today -- Rank: 29

New York hadn't won a game in nine months prior to Sunday's breakthrough. Now it's off to London in search of a streak.

The Athletic -- Rank: 29

Zach Wilson uncorked some eye-popping throws, including two completions over 50 yards, in the Jets' first win under Robert Saleh. The pass rush, meanwhile, combined for seven sacks of Ryan Tannehill. With the lowly Falcons on tap in London before an early-season bye, there might be more hope coming to North Jersey than we thought.
