2023 NFL Power Rankings: Chicago Bears

Throughout the 2023 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Below you will find a post-draft roundup for the Chicago Bears in our consensus 2023 NFL Power Rankings.

ESPN -- Rank: 27

Most improved: Wide receiver

Bears wide receivers recorded the fewest catches (121) of any NFL wideout group last season. Upgrading the group of pass-catchers around QB Justin Fields was Chicago's priority and led to trading the top overall pick to Carolina in a package that included WR DJ Moore. The addition of a true No. 1 receiver to a room whose leader in 2022, Darnell Mooney, topped out at 493 receiving yards, is what the Bears believe will help Fields take the next step as a passer. Between Moore, Mooney, Chase Claypool, Equanimeous St. Brown and rookie Tyler Scott, the Bears have a more established group of pass-catchers.

"We kind of know what these guys are," wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert said. "We don't have to try to search to see who can do what now."

The Bears set up their franchise well with the blockbuster trade that sent the No. 1 overall pick to the Panthers in exchange for a bushel of high draft picks and stud wide receiver D.J. Moore. Third-year quarterback Justin Fields received more help on Thursday night with the selection of Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright at No. 10 overall. Wright profiles as a significant upgrade over former right tackle Riley Reiff, who signed with the Patriots in March. Chicago filled another need on the roster with the second-round selection of Florida defensive lineman Gervon Dexter Sr. The Bears remain a work in progress, but a jump from Fields could make them players in the mysterious NFC North.

CBS Sports -- Rank: 23

This is another team moving in the right direction. Justin Fields needs to improve as a passer, but they made moves this offseason to help that become a reality. They are a year away.

USA Today -- Rank: 24

TBD how well they can throw the ball or defend the pass, but this ought to be a gritty team that will come out swinging every week.

The Athletic -- Rank: 26

Draft takeaway: The Bears beefed up the line of scrimmage with three of their first four picks (tackle Darnell Wright and defensive tackles Gervon Dexter and Zacch Pickens) while adding future picks and wide receiver DJ Moore. But it's also fair to be a little disappointed the best player to come from a draft in which they held the No. 1 overall selection was No. 24 on Brugler's big board.

Hype man: With an improved offensive line and better weapons on the outside, Justin Fields finally has a fighting chance. Can't wait to see what kind of fireworks he has in store.

Darnell Downer: With the Panthers' 2024 first-round pick, I used to think we might have a chance for two top-five picks. Then the Cardinals came along and got the Texans' pick and now even if we stink we're playing for second place.

PFF -- Rank: 19

The Bears, even after making solid moves in free agency, still have the most salary cap available of any team. Their defense ranked last in the league in 2022 with a 52.4 grade, so adding two solid linebackers in Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards should help fix that. Further, defensive linemen Andrew Billings and DeMarcus Walker are huge upgrades to the front seven. Chicago also shored up its offensive line by signing guard Nate Davis and drafting tackle Darnell Wright. Wright allowed only eight pressures in 2022, and his 1.7% pressure rate allowed in 2022 ranked fourth among FBS tackles.

The Bears added to their defensive line by drafting Gervon Dexter Sr., Zacch Pickens and Travis Bell. Pickens recorded an 11.5% pass-rush win rate in 2022. Finally, Chicago traded up for Miami cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, whose 88.5 press coverage grade ranked second among FBS cornerbacks in this year's draft.

PFT -- Rank: 29

Bears have fixed a lot of things in one offseason, without question, and could be anywhere on this list from 31 to 13 by December. But today, I need to see more of Justin Fields the passer to fall in like with this team.
