2022 NFL Power Rankings: San Francisco 49ers

Throughout the 2021 NFL season, we will compile a consensus NFL Power Rankings that averages the rankings of all 32 NFL teams.

Here is where the San Francisco 49ers rank in terms of average, best and worst:

Below you will find a post-Super Bowl 56 roundup for the 49ers in our consensus 2022 NFL Power Rankings.

ESPN -- Rank: 6

Offseason in three or fewer words: Get Lance ready

All signs point to Trey Lance taking over as starting quarterback in the offseason, which means every move the Niners make should be about setting him up for success. That means maximizing the return in a likely Jimmy Garoppolo trade, keeping key players like guard Laken Tomlinson and giving Lance a definitive plan on what to work on when away from the facility. Although he made two starts last season, there are no guarantees on how he'll fare as the full-time starter. This is the time for the Niners to do what they can to ease his transition. -- Nick Wagoner

NFL.com -- Rank: 6

We see every year how the teams with special quarterbacks end up hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in the end. Jimmy Garoppolo does not fall under that QB umbrella, but perhaps Trey Lance eventually will. It makes the biggest decision of the offseason an easy one for Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. Try to maximize return in a Jimmy G trade and clear the runway for Lance, the 2021 No. 3 overall pick who played only sparingly in San Francisco's roller-coaster ride to the NFC title game. Lance is well set up for success: The Niners have impact players across the offense and a play-caller in Shanahan who will know how to maximize Lance's varied skill set. This offseason will be about getting the kid ready for the challenge of his life.

CBS Sports -- Rank: 7

It looks like Trey Lance will be the quarterback next year, although that's not definitive yet. Jimmy Garoppolo could be traded.

USA Today -- Rank: 7

For the second time in three seasons, they came up just short with veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo. The question for 2022 will be how much better inexperienced-but-talented expected successor Trey Lance can do?

The Athletic -- Rank: 6

The 49ers certainly received a postseason bump in our Power Rankings after winning two road games against the Cowboys and Packers to advance to the NFC Championship Game. There were some nice moments from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but his falter in a critical late-game moment against the Rams was a reminder of why the 49ers are expected to move on to Trey Lance in 2022.
