Pittsburgh Steelers Mock Draft Roundup 6.0

Throughout the year and leading up to the 2022 NFL Draft, we will update our Pittsburgh Steelers Mock Draft Roundup showing picks for the Pittsburgh Steelers from several prominent sites and draft analysts.

The following are picks in recent mock drafts for the Steelers:

SI - Kevin Hanson (4/1)

20. Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh

Even though the Steelers signed Mitchell Trubisky in free agency, the two-year, $14.285 million contract "will not preempt" the Steelers from drafting a quarterback. A four-year starter who has already played his home games at Heinz Field, Pickett broke Deshaun Watson's ACC record for most passing touchdowns in a season (42) while cutting down on interceptions (seven) in 2021. Pickett has good arm strength and mobility, throws well on the move and moves quickly through his progressions.

CBS Sports - Kyle Stackpole (4/1)

20. Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa

Mitch Trubisky needs time to throw and Najee Harris needs bigger holes to run through. Penning, with his nasty demeanor and physical, aggressive playing style, will help ensure that happens in Pittsburgh's first year without Ben Roethlisberger.

Yahoo! Sports - Eric Edholm (3/31)

20. Devonte Wyatt, IDL, Georgia

Their eyes might be set on either Willis or Pickett. But in this scenario, the Steelers are able to address a sneaky-big need. Expecting much from Stephon Tuitt or Tyson Alualu feels a smidge risky, and Wyatt has a similar profile to previous higher-round Steelers DTs such as Ziggy Hood and Javon Hargrave.

ESPN - Mike Tannenbaum (3/30)

20. Malik Willis, QB, Liberty

With Mitch Trubisky serving as a bridge starter, the Steelers can take advantage of Willis still being available, draft the big-armed Liberty quarterback and let him develop before taking over in the QB-heavy AFC North. I love his mobility in and out of the pocket, and I think he has a chance to be a very good starting QB in the NFL. Pittsburgh has to find its guy under center following Ben Roethlisberger's retirement, and this is a great scenario for the Steelers.

NFL.com - Bucky Brooks (3/29)

20. Jahan Dotson, WR, Penn State

The spectacular catch-and-run specialist is a big-play weapon with polished route-running skills and strong hands.

The Draft Network - Brentley Weissman (3/28)

20. Malik Willis, QB, Liberty

Pittsburgh signed Mitch Trubisky to come in and compete for their starting quarterback job but that's hardly a reason why they shouldn't add one in the draft. It's no secret that head coach Mike Tomlin is enamored with Malik Willis and there are rumors that the Steelers are targeting him with their first-round pick. While I do acknowledge that Willis had a tantalizing upside, he does come with a fair amount of risk. That being said, having the opportunity to sit behind Trubisky for a year and develop could make a lot of sense for both parties.

The Athletic - Beat Writer Mock (3/28)

20. Devonte Wyatt, IDL, Georgia

Mark Kaboly: The Steelers don't draft for need, they draft for want. But those two have typically intersected for GM Kevin Colbert over the past 22 years. Incidentally, where need and want intersect in this draft led them to the defensive line and Wyatt. Safety and cornerback are also in that category, but Wyatt is too good and has too high of a ceiling to pass up.

The Steelers were one of the worst run defenses a year ago with Stephon Tuitt and Tyson Alualu missing the majority of the season. Cam Heyward is still playing at an All-Pro level despite turning 33 in May, but the uncertainty surrounding Tuitt's return, the ages of Heyward and Alualu and not much in the way of talent behind them make the Wyatt pick a must. Wyatt is big, powerful and quick. His 1.66 10-yard split at the combine was Joey Bosa-like, something the Steelers insist upon with their defensive linemen, and he's a high-motor guy.

Brugler: With Pickett still available, this pick surprised me. But Mark's reasoning is on point with the need on the Steelers' defensive line and Wyatt's fit. He is an athletic big man with the relentless hustle and versatility to play multiple positions up front. However, I would still be surprised if they pass on Pickett or another quarterback here. Mike Tomlin has been wining and dining each of these quarterback prospects before their pro days for a reason. Maybe the "right" quarterback won't be available at this pick, which is why Wyatt is an interesting alternative.

PFF - Austin Gayle (3/28)

20. Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina

Pickett is a more likely candidate for the Steelers than Sam Howell, considering his Pittsburgh ties and where the consensus leans in terms of evaluation between the two signal-callers, but I like Howell for Mike Tomlin and company.

He has a rocket arm and good athletic ability for the position. He also gets ahead of a lot of the Baker Mayfield comparisons with his exceedingly better pocket presence. Accuracy is definitely a concern with Howell, especially when isolating his non-vertical lead throws, but it's not too far off of Willis' and far from a death knell for his NFL prospects. He also ranked first among Power Five quarterbacks in forced missed tackles (65) and second in total rushing yards (647) in 2021.
